Abstract: Nothing new from the Ice Age? Far from it! Barely ten years have passed since the first edition of this book was published, but in that time researchers around the world have developed new methods and published their findings in scientific journals. Consequently, ideas about the course of the Ice Age have changed dramatically. The sequence of the individual ice advances, the direction of ice movement and the direction of meltwater drainage are only partially known, but they can be reconstructed. This book offers in-depth information about the state of the investigations. Ice ages are the periods of the earth's history in which at least one polar region is glaciated or covered by sea ice. Thus, we are currently living in an Ice Age. The present Ice Age is also the period in which humans started to intervene in the shaping of the earth. The results are obvious. Aerial and satellite images can be used to trace the melting of glaciers, but also the decay of the Arctic permafrost, and the clearing of the Brazilian rainforest. This book is a translation of the original German 2nd edition Das Eiszeitalter by Jürgen Ehlers, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature, in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and promotes technologies to support the authors. The Author Dr. Jürgen Ehlers is a German geoscientist. Together with Prof. Philip L. Gibbard, Cambridge, he has led the project 'Extent and Chronology of Quaternary Glaciations' for the International Union for Quaternary Research, involving 170 scientists from 50 countries. Gibbard and Ehlers are among the best experts on glacial geology and were awarded the Medal of Merit of the German Quaternary Association (DEUQUA). Ehlers is the author of several books on the Quaternary (Enke and Wiley) and on the North Sea (WBG) and is also known as an author of historical crime fiction. .

Abstract: This book describes and comprehensively illustrates the soils of the world in accordance with the worldwide WRB classification. The structure of the book follows the ecozone concept. For every ecozone, location, climate and vegetation as well as soil formation and distribution are presented. All soils representative of the corresponding ecozone are then described in detail: definition, properties, distribution, use, classification, genesis. Over 260 photographs illustrate soil profiles, soil details and landscapes. Instructive maps and graphs help understand soil properties and soil-forming processes and make the publication an excellent reference book about the world's soils. About the Authors Wolfgang Zech is professor emeritus for Soil Science and Soil Geography at the University of Bayreuth (Germany) and the lead author of the German edition of this book. He is honorary member of the German Soil Science Society. Peter Schad is a lecturer for Soil Science at the Technical University of Munich (Germany) and the lead author of the present English edition of this book. He is the Chair of the Working Group World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB) of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) and the lead author of the current edition of the WRB. Gerd Hintermaier-Erhard is a geologist and soil scientist. Together with Wolfgang Zech he published in 1997 a 'Soil Science Dictionary' and in 2002 the first edition of 'Soils of the World' (both in German).

Description / Table of Contents: 1. introduction -- 2- The Amazon - largest river on earth -- 3. cities on the Amazon -- 4. people on the Amazon -- 5. the rainforest -- 6. flowering plants on and in the water -- 7. flowering plants in the rainforest -- 8. animal observation on and in the water -- 9. animal observation in the rainforest -- 10. conclusion: how will development continue in the Amazon lowlands?
Abstract: In this volume, the Amazon and its adjacent rainforest are presented in all their important facets: First, there is the vast river system itself, with its network of white, black, and clear water rivers. The different water qualities have an enormous impact on people, animals and plants. On the other hand, the people who live along this "Rio Mar," the ocean river, are described. They are the Caboclos, the descendants of the European immigrants and the indigenous people, and it is the different indigenous peoples who have mostly settled along the riverbanks, since the rivers here replace the roads and make contact with other people possible in the first place. Although these ethnic groups have been in contact with Western civilization for generations, they have surprisingly preserved a number of remarkable traditions that are described here. The treasure of the Amazon is its plants and animals. Therefore, the most fascinating flowering plants, including numerous medicinal plants, tropical fruits, trees, epiphytes and lianas from different habitats are described in detail and illustrated with excellent photographs. Finally, it is the animals, especially in and around the river, that have always fascinated the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt in 1801. Not only is the lifestyle of the legendary pink dolphins, piranhas and tarantulas explained here, but the impressive amphibians, reptiles and mammals of the jungle are also discussed. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Faszination Amazonas by Lothar Staeck, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2019. In a first step the translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence . In a second step a human revision was done by the author. Dr. Lothar Staeck is professor for didactics of biology (biological education) at the Technical University Berlin. His main focus is the education of students with a focus on "biology teachers teaching in highschools". He his actually a biology lecturer on cruise ships for over 20 years and is an expert on the Amazon in particular. .

Abstract: Why can rigid ice move? How do you measure glacier recession? When was the Little Ice Age? This textbook covers all important aspects of mountain glaciers, from their formation and their importance as water reservoirs to the threat posed by current global warming. Glaciers themselves can also pose a threat to humans and represent a natural hazard in populated mountain areas in the form of ice avalanches and glacial lake outbursts. In addition, however, they are also important landscape formers and have helped to shape large parts of the present-day relief of the Earth, which is one of the classic fields of work of geomorphology and geology. In the individual chapters, the current state of research is presented in a comprehensible manner and illustrated with concise examples, photos and graphics. The book offers a compact introduction for all students of geosciences, curious mountaineers and laymen interested in nature. About the author Wilfried Hagg holds a degree in geography and did his doctorate on the hydrological consequences of glacier retreat in Central Asia. As part of his habilitation and as a Heisenberg Fellow of the German Research Foundation, he has also worked on the nearby mountain glaciers of the Alps and participated in expeditions to mountains in the former Soviet Union, China and New Zealand, as well as to the ice-covered volcanoes of Iceland. Through his university teaching, Wilfried Hagg has experience in imparting geographical knowledge, particularly in the areas of high mountains, glaciology and natural hazards. He currently teaches geography and geology at the Department of Geoinformatics at Munich University of Applied Sciences. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract: The densely populated Campi Flegrei resurgent caldera is one of the widest known, best studied and highly dangerous volcanoes of the world. This monograph synthesises the current knowledge of this volcano, through different review chapters. Each chapter of this book is dedicated to a specific volcanological aspect, authored by well-recognised experts. The volume attempts to cross the barriers between the volcanological, geological, geochemical and geophysical perspectives, and offers a comprehensive and up-to-date reference to earth-science scholars, as well as land planners and civil defence officers.

Description / Table of Contents: Searching for traces on our doorstep -- All around the glacier -- Distribution of ice and cold regions -- Glaciations during the geological past -- Glaciers shape landscapes -- The influence of glacial meltwater -- Shaping shapes away from glaciated areas -- Glaciers and sea level -- The next cold period is sure to come.
Abstract: This book combines facts and interesting questions about the "Ice Age" with the topic of "Global Warming", Both these topics are the current topics which the media addresses on an almost daily basis. The author emphasizes that we are currently living in an ice age- a geological epoch in which there are glaciated areas on a larger scale. The traces of these cold periods can be seen and traced very well in the landscape in large parts of Europe, including northen and southern Germany. The book is aimed at university students of geosciences, but it is equally suitable reading for interested people and high school students. Upon reading this book, the targeted group will be enabled to see the traces of the ice age and better understand them in the surrounding landscapes by themselves. The author Wolfgang Fraedrich teaches geology and geography education at a Hamburg secondary school and accompanies students at the "Schülerforschungszentrum Hamburg" in geoscientific research projects. He is the author of numerous textbooks and non-fiction books and is since 40 years co-editor of the journal "geographie heute", with well over 300 publications. Through numerous excursions with adults and various research trips with school groups as part of the supervision of the program “Jugend forscht”, he has become acquainted with the most diverse corners of the earth. In addition to volcanism and the formation of mountain landscapes, glacial regions play a particularly important role. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.
