    Description: Attempts of nineteenth-century writers to establish “race” as a biological concept failed after Charles Darwin opened the door to a new world of knowledge. Yet this word already had a place in the organization of everyday life and in ordinary English language usage. This book explains how the idea of race became so important in the USA, generating conceptual confusion that can now be clarified. Developing an international approach, it reviews references to “race,” “racism,” and “ethnicity” in sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and comparative politics and identifies promising lines of research that may make it possible to supersede misleading notions of race in the social sciences.

    Description: Violent Becomings conceptualizes the Mozambican state not as the bureaucratically ordered polity of the nation-state, but as a continuously emergent and violently challenged mode of ordering. In doing so, this book addresses the question of why colonial and postcolonial state formation has involved violent articulations with so-called ‘traditional’ forms of sociality. The scope and dynamic nature of such violent becomings is explored through an array of contexts that include colonial regimes of forced labor and pacification, liberation war struggles and civil war, the social engineering of the post-independence state, and the popular appropriation of sovereign violence in riots and lynchings.

    Description: "Globalisierung" ist ein Schlagwort, mit dem sowohl Ängste als auch Hoffnungen verbunden sind. Befürworter erwarten Wohlfahrtsgewinne durch verbesserte internationale Arbeitsteilung. Kritiker befürchten negative Umverteilungseffekte zu Lasten vor allem von Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern. Ausgelöst wurde die Globalisierung durch technischen Fortschritt und durch institutionellen Wandel. Sie hat zugleich aber auch zu institutionellem Wandel geführt. Vor allem dieser letzte Aspekt ist Gegenstand des vorliegenden Bandes, dessen erster Teil den Zusammenhang zwischen Globalisierung und Wandel von politischen Institutionen beispielhaft beleuchtet. Behandelt werden mögliche Gründe für eine selektive Migrationspolitik, die Auswirkungen von Schuldenerlassprogrammen auf die politischen Entscheidungsprozesse in Entwicklungsländern sowie der Zusammenhang zwischen Wechselkursregime und Wirtschaftswachstum. Im zweiten Teil des Bandes analysieren die Autoren den Zusammenhang zwischen Globalisierung und Wandel von Institutionen im Markt. Es wird gefragt, welche Bedeutung die Internationalisierung der Wirtschaft für das Herausbilden hybrider Unternehmensformen und deren Standortpolitik hat und welche Gründe zum Wandel von Unternehmensformen im Transformationsprozess der Volksrepublik China geführt haben.

It looks at young men living in a Soninke-speaking village in Gambia who, although eager to travel abroad for money and experience, settle as farmers, heads of families, businessmen, civic activists, or, alternatively, as unemployed, demoted youth.     Description: Der vorliegende Band enthält die überarbeiteten Beiträge der Sitzung des Ausschusses »Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Ethik« im Verein für Socialpolitik, die vom 10. bis 12. Februar 1994 in Osnabrück stattgefunden hat. Die Aufsätze liefern einen anschaulichen Eindruck davon, wie sehr in den letzten zehn Jahren ethische Fragen als Probleme wirtschaftlicher Praxis und ökonomischer Theoriebildung an Bedeutung und an Interesse gewonnen haben. Darüber hinaus zeigt sich, daß der anfänglich schwierige Dialog zwischen »Ökonomen« und »Philosophen« bei der Behandlung ethischer, also moralphilosophischer Fragestellungen zunehmend offener und fruchtbarer wird. Die Arbeitstagung und damit auch der vorliegende Tagungsband sind durch drei deutlich erkennbare thematische Schwerpunkte geprägt, die in gewisser Weise einen repräsentativen Querschnitt aus der Vielfalt der gegenwärtigen wirtschafts- und unternehmensethischen Diskussionen bieten. Den ersten Schwerpunkt bilden unternehmensethische Fragestellungen im weiteren Sinne. Josef Wieland erörtert ausgehend von US-amerikanischen Erfahrungen Formen der Institutionalisierung von Moral in der Unternehmung, die er sodann zum Anlaß für grundsätzliche theoretische Reflexionen über die unternehmensethische Problematik nimmt. Im Aufsatz von Margit Osterloh (Mitautoren Regine Tiemann und Simon Grand) steht der mögliche Beitrag der ökonomischen Theorie zum organisationalen Lernen im Zentrum der Betrachtung. Den zweiten Schwerpunkt bilden philosophisch begründete Beiträge zur Wirtschaftsethik. Ulrich Gähde entwickelt am Beispiel des klassischen Utilitarismus sehr grundsätzliche und für die weitere Forschung anregende Überlegungen über die Anwendung wissenschaftstheoretischer Methoden auf ethische Theorien. Hans-Peter Weikard diskutiert, ausgehend von Hobbes und Locke, drei Varianten des Gesellschaftsvertrags, die auf den Theorien von Rawls, Brennan und Buchanan sowie Nozick und Gauthier beruhen. Wilfried Hinsch beschäftigt sich mit gerechten Güterverteilungen und deren öffentlichen Rechtfertigung. Michael Schramm untersucht unterschiedliche sozialpolitische Maßnahmen, die den "unteren Bereich" des Arbeitsmarktes fördern sollen. Peter Koslowski diskutiert ein Verbot von Insider-Handel aus wirtschaftsethischer Sicht, und Werner Lachmann schließlich plädiert für objektivierbare Kriterien zur Festlegung der Abgeordnetendiäten. Die Sitzungen fanden in den Jahren 2002 und 2003 in Erfurt und Oldenburg statt. In diesem Ausschuss diskutierten Volks- und Betriebswirte, Philosophen und Theologen beider Konfessionen sowohl theoretische wie auch praxisbezogene Themen mit wirtschafts- und unternehmensethischen Bezügen. Die Beiträge des nunmehr vorliegenden siebten Bandes der "Wirtschaftsethischen Perspektiven" enthalten mit Themen zur Gentechnik und zur medizinischen Ethik einen Schwerpunkt (Steinvorth, Neumärker, Staffelbach und Pohl-Eckerstorfer, Aumann und Gaertner). Darüber hinaus wurde aber auch erneut ein weites Spektrum an Fragestellungen behandelt: Methodische Grundsatzfragen der Wirtschafts- und der Unternehmensethik (Sautter, Homann, Pies, Suchanek), Probleme der Messung von Ungleichheiten (Ebert), Verteilungsfragen (Sturn) sowie empirische Fragen der Unternehmensethik (Tebroke). Insgesamt gesehen zeugt der Band einerseits von dem Bemühen des Ausschusses, die Wirtschaftsethik in die moderne Ökonomik zurückzuholen, und andererseits Fragen anderer Disziplinen mit ökonomischem Bezug mit den Methoden der Ökonomik zu behandeln.

    Description: In der Volkswirtschaftslehre erkennt man immer mehr, dass die klassische Figur des eigennützigen und rational handelnden Homo Oeconomicus zur Erklärung individuellen Verhaltens nur begrenzt geeignet ist. Es wird deutlich, dass auch moralische Motive das menschliche Handeln bestimmen und für das Gelingen und die Aktivierung einer erfolgreichen sozialen Interaktion in Markt und Staat unentbehrlich sind. Insbesondere die Finanzkrise und das Problem des Klimawandels führen in jüngster Zeit nachdrücklich vor Augen, dass mittlerweile auch wirtschaftsethische Fragestellungen eine globale Dimension erreicht haben. Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet einige Hauptthemen der global orientierten Wirtschaftsethik und liefert dabei gleichzeitig einen Überblick über die aktuelle Ausrichtung der wirtschaftsethischen Forschung im deutschen Sprachraum. Dabei geht es unter anderem um Aspekte der Corporate Governance, um Anreizsysteme, faire Managerentlohnung in global agierenden Unternehmen und um berufsständische Ordnungen als historischen Gegenentwurf. Aufgrund der Entwicklungen neuer Methoden in der Reproduktionsmedizin und der durch sie ermöglichten stetig zunehmenden Zugriffsmöglichkeiten in das vorgeburtliche Leben ist die Suche nach einer Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Lebensbeginn wichtiger geworden, um markieren zu können, ab wann der Embryo in vitro rechtlichen Schutz genießt und, damit verbunden, um die Zulässigkeit von Eingriffen an menschlichen Embryonen bestimmen zu können. Diese Untersuchung kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass es notwendig ist, ein umfassendes und präzises Fortpflanzungsmedizingesetz zu normieren, weil das ESchG viele Lücken und Unklarheiten aufweist und durch neue medizinische Fortschritte an einigen Stellen überholt wird.»Protecting the Life of the Embryo In Vitro« This book explores the question of when exactly human life begins and benefits from protection of life. To address the issue of protection of human life, the hotly debated question of the legal status of the embryo is examined. Nach zwei stärker theoretisch orientierten Beiträgen zur kulturellen Evolution von Helmut Leipold und Horst Feldmann, die unter anderem die relevanten Arbeiten von Adam Smith, Max Weber und Friedrich August von Hayek würdigen, werden im zweiten Teil des Bandes die Einflüsse unterschiedlicher Kulturen auf die Ausgestaltung wirtschaftlicher Institutionen sowie den Erfolg wirtschaftspolitischer Reformen anhand ausgewählter Fallbeispiele etwas eingehender analysiert. Während Stephan Panther der Frage nachgeht, in welchem Maße kulturelle Unterschiede zu den unterschiedlichen Transformationserfolgen in den Ländern Mittel- und Osteuropas beitragen, untersucht Volker Nienhaus den Einfluss der Religion und der Tradition auf das Wirtschaftsleben in den islamischen Ländern der verschiedenen Teilräume des Nahen Ostens. In den ersten vier Beiträgen werden grundlegende Fragen zur theoretischen Positionierung der Wirtschaftsethik im Spannungsfeld zwischen Ethik als Teildisziplin der Philosophie und Wirtschaftswissenschaft als Sozialwissenschaft gestellt und teilweise unterschiedlich beantwortet. Drei weitere Aufsätze widmen sich speziell dem Problem der Finanzkrise, die am Anfang der »Großen Rezession« stand; auch weiterhin sind die Finanzmärkte und ihre Regulierung eine »Baustelle« für Wirtschaftspolitik und Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Im Bereich der Finanzmärkte ist die Diskrepanz zwischen manchen Annahmen und Aussagen der Wirtschaftstheorie wie etwa der Theorie effizienter Märkte einerseits und den tatsächlichen Vorgängen in dieser Branche besonders augenfällig. Die letzten drei Beiträge behandeln Probleme der Ethik auf der Ebene des Betriebs und jener der Volkswirtschaft.

    Description: Der vorliegende Band "Wirtschaftsethische Perspektiven VIII" umfasst einen großen Teil der Arbeiten, die auf den Sitzungen des Ausschusses für Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Ethik des Vereins für Socialpolitik in Kassel (2004) und in Wittenberg (2005) vorgetragen worden sind. Dieser Ausschuss ist interdisziplinär besetzt (er setzt sich zusammen aus Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern, Philosophen und Theologen) und beschäftigt sich mit Problemstellungen der Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik. Die Ergebnisse früherer Ausschusssitzungen stehen in den Wirtschaftsethischen Perspektiven I-VII zur Verfügung. Das Spektrum der Beiträge des hier vorliegenden VIII. Bandes ist weit gespannt: Die Autorinnen und Autoren beschäftigen sich sowohl mit mehr theoretischen (Schramm, Haase, Nutzinger, Jähnichen) als auch mehr praxisbezogenen (Emunds, Grosse) Themen der Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik. Darüber hinaus werden Fragen der internationalen Kooperation und Globalisierung behandelt (Pies / Voigt, Lachmann, Hielscher / Pies). Außerdem sind Beiträge zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung (Suchanek) und zur optimalen Entwicklung einer Bevölkerung (Hackmann) zu finden. Alle Beiträge haben einen ausschussinternen Referierungsprozess durchlaufen.

    Description: Employing methodological perspectives from the fields of political geography, environmental studies, anthropology, and their cognate disciplines, this volume explores alternative logics of sentient landscapes as racist, xenophobic, and right-wing. While the field of sentient landscapes has gained critical attention, the literature rarely seems to question the intentionality of sentient landscapes, which are often romanticized as pure, good, and just, and perceived as protectors of those who are powerless, indigenous, and colonized. The book takes a new stance on sentient landscapes with the intention of dispelling the denial of “coevalness” represented by their scholarly romanticization.
