    Description: This open access book examines the depiction of Korean history in recent South Korean historical films. Released over the Hallyu (“Korean Wave”) period starting in the mid-1990s, these films have reflected, shaped, and extended the thriving public discourse over national history. In these works, the balance between fate and freedom—the negotiation between societal constraints and individual will, as well as cyclical and linear history—functions as a central theme, subtext, or plot device for illuminating a rich variety of historical events, figures, and issues. In sum, these highly accomplished films set in Korea’s past address universal concerns about the relationship between structure and agency, whether in collective identity or in individual lives.     Description: For the first time, this book provides the global history of labor in Central Eurasia, Russia, Europe, and the Indian Ocean between the 16th and 20th centuries. It contests common views on free and unfree labor, comparing the latter to many Western countries where wage conditions resembled those of domestic servants. This gave rise to extreme forms of dependency in the colonies, not only under slavery, but also afterwards via indentured labor in the Indian Ocean and obligatory labor in Africa. Stanziani shows that unfree labor and forms of economic coercion were perfectly compatible with market development and capitalism, proven by the consistent economic growth that took place all over Eurasia between the 17th and the 19th centuries. This growth was labor intensive: commercial expansion, transformations in agriculture, and the first industrial revolution required more labor, not less.

    Description: This open access book explores the ambiguity of East Central Europe during the twentieth century, examining local contexts through a comparative and transnational reworking of theoretical models in postcolonial studies. Since the early modern period, East Central Europe has arguably been an object of imperialism. However, at the same time East Central European states have been seen to be colonial actors, with individuals from the region often associating themselves with colonial discourses in extra-European contexts. Spanning a broad time period until after the Second World War and covering the governance of Communism and its legacies, the book examines how cultural and literary narratives from East Central Europe have created and revised historical knowledge, making use of collective memory to feed into identity models.

    Description: The distinction between basic and applied research was central to twentieth-century science and policymaking, and if this framework has been contested in recent years, it nonetheless remains ubiquitous in both scientific and public discourse. Employing a transnational, diachronic perspective informed by historical semantics, this volume traces the conceptual history of the basic–applied distinction from the nineteenth century to today, taking stock of European developments alongside comparative case studies from the United States and China. It shows how an older dichotomy of pure and applied science was reconceived in response to rapid scientific progress and then further transformed by the geopolitical circumstances of the postwar era.

Dieser langwierige und überaus schwierige Prozess machte aus Brandenburg in den Jahren von 1945 bis 1952 ein „Land zwischen den Zeiten“. Der Band gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die wechselvolle Entwicklung Brandenburgs zwischen 1945 und 1952, die keineswegs geradlinig in die SED-Diktatur führte. Sieben Beiträge beleuchten die politischen Rahmenbedingungen ebenso wie die Wirtschaft, Gesellschaft und Kultur sowie das weite Feld der staatlichen Repression. Der Band führt die bisherigen Forschungen zusammen und bietet darüber hinaus neue Perspektiven.

    Description: Die Bodenreform in der SBZ löste eine nie dagewesene Siedlungsbewegung aus. Eine solche hatte es in Deutschland noch nie gegeben; es wird sie nie wieder geben. Aus Gutsländereien mussten 5-ha-Höfe geschnitten, den Neubauern Haus und Hof gebaut und alles in eine sinnvolle Ordnung des ländlichen Raumes gebracht werden. Wolfgang Blöß behandelt mit der Siedlungsplanung die Schnittstelle zwischen Landaufteilung und Neubauern-Bauprogramm und stellt diese in den historischen Kontext. Er arbeitet den Aufbau der dafür erforderlichen Verwaltungsorganisation im Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Zentrale und Gliedern der SBZ sowie zwischen deutschen und Besatzungsbehörden ebenso heraus wie Diskussion und Erlass der erforderlichen Richtlinien und Weisungen. Diese wurden vom Umgang mit den Gutsanlagen und der Konzeption des geschlossenen Dorfes bestimmt. Im Fokus steht auch die Arbeit der Planer und Architekten, die sich schwierigsten Bedingungen und einem unerbittlichen Zeitdruck zu stellen hatten. Ihr Arbeitsergebnis, den Dorfbebauungsplan, stellt Blöß vor und führt die in diesem Zusammenhang sicht- und erlebbare, von Widersprüchen geprägte soziale Lage im Dorf vor Augen. Dieses Buch enthält sind 19 s/w Tab, 12 s/w Abb. und 11 farb. Abb.

    Description: Lange Zeit blieb Arnswalde im Zweiten Weltkrieg von militärischen Auseinandersetzungen verschont. Erst Anfang Februar 1945 belagerten sowjetische Truppen die Stadt. Tausende Bewohner konnten nicht mehr rechtzeitig fliehen und wurden in Arnswalde eingeschlossen. Zwei Wochen lang bangten sie um ihr Leben; bis die deutsche Wehrmacht sie schließlich vom Feind unbemerkt aus der Stadt schleusen konnte. In dieser Quellenedition kommen neben Autoritätspersonen vor allem einfache Bürger zu Wort; die eindrucksvoll von ihrer Flucht aus der eingeschlossenen Stadt berichten; von ihrer Rückkehr in die Heimat; ihrer späteren Vertreibung und von den Schwierigkeiten beim Neuanfang westlich der Oder in einer Gesellschaft; die sie nicht wollte. „Man bleibt eben immer ‚der Flüchtling‘; etwas bemitleidet; geduldet; manchem allein schon durch seinen Anblick lästig; da er nur zu sehr an die Vergänglichkeit irdischen Besitzes erinnert“; schrieb der Arnswalder Lehrer Werner Riepe 1946 an seine Lebensgefährtin. Seine Einschätzung scheint angesichts heutiger politischer und gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen immer noch erschreckend aktuell zu sein.

    Description: Following the Treaty of Versailles, European nation-states were faced with the challenge of instilling national loyalty in their new borderlands, in which fellow citizens often differed dramatically from one another along religious, linguistic, cultural, or ethnic lines. Peripheries at the Centre compares the experiences of schooling in Upper Silesia in Poland and Eupen, Sankt Vith, and Malmedy in Belgium — border regions detached from the German Empire after the First World War. It demonstrates how newly configured countries envisioned borderland schools and language learning as tools for realizing the imagined peaceful Europe that underscored the political geography of the interwar period.

Handbuch städtischer Geschichte‘ wurde bald zu einem Standardwerk für die lokale Stadtgeschichte, die vergleichende Städteforschung oder die Lehre an Universitäten und Schulen, zumal es in den letzten Jahrzehnten wesentlich erweitert für einzelne Bundesländer neu bearbeitet wurde. Das Städtebuch strukturiert alle Artikel nach einer einheitlichen Gliederung, die in 20 übergeordneten Punkten die wichtigsten Fakten zur Stadt bietet; unter anderem wird über Namen, Ursprung, geografische Lage, Rechtswesen, Wirtschaft, Verwaltung, Herrschaftsverhältnisse, Finanzen, Religion und Bildungswesen informiert. Das ‚Städtebuch Historisches Ostbrandenburg‘ ergänzt das 2000 veröffentlichte ‚Städtebuch Brandenburg und Berlin‘ um die Städte östlich von Oder und Neiße, die 1939 zur Provinz Brandenburg gehörten. Die Artikel enthalten reiche Angaben zu allen Bereichen des städtischen Lebens und berücksichtigen auch umfassend die polnische Entwicklung von 1945 bis zur Gegenwart.
