    Description: This open access book provokes critical thinking regarding the most ambitious Chinese project since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The book presents extensive quality research and original insights in assessing the status of China’s outbound investment and construction projects under the BRI umbrella. Referring to case studies and projects of selected countries from Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, the author sheds new light on the issues and problems associated with the BRI's implementation and discusses both the readjustments and prospects for the BRI. Finally, this book demarcates the limits and potential of the world’s second largest economy in pushing for the BRI, which is challenged by enormous domestic tensions and external pressures.     Description: This open access book offers a critical analysis of the history of the International Bureau of Education (IBE) from its founding in 1925 to its integration into UNESCO in January 1969. Based on the conceptual and methodological tools of the transnational turn and on archives, fully exploited for the first time by the research team, this book enriches knowledge of the phenomena of globalization. It does so in a field, education, which is currently one of those most invested in globalization, but whose sociogenesis in the era of its first period of institutionalization remains to be explored more profoundly. The authors do this by analyzing how the actors of the IBE tried to realize their aspiration towards universal aims in education, the contradictions they were confronted with, the causes they invested in, their operating mode and the governments and international organizations with which they cooperated.

    Description: This open access book examines the facilitation of pre-service and in-service educators’ research thinking that equips them to be responsive to the unfolding uncertainties of the 21st century, and to likewise prepare their own students. It addresses several key areas, including: articulating the contemporary need for research thinking across teacher education; showcasing diverse yet conceptually connected strategies that all use the Research Skill Development (RSD) framework; providing an explicit scaffolded approach; and extending knowledge of the 'Models of Engaged Learning and Teaching' (MELT) conceptual framework. This book also addresses the contemporary topics of social media for learning, digital literacy, education research as cultural work and formations of communities of practice, with cross-cutting themes of scaffolded development and formative assessment of research skills. It highlights how research thinking is not only vital for PST (Preservice Teachers), I-ST (In-Serivce Teachers) and university educators, but also models for them how to scaffold the research thinking of their own students. This book's use of the RSD, as a shared conceptual framework across the chapters, emphasises the overlaps between ways of thinking in the different learning areas in which education occurs, without masking the differences. Likewise, the interdisciplinary work that comprises Education is informed by the RSD conceptual framework as used in a variety of disciplines. Together, this use of RSD brings a strong sense of connectedness between PST, I-ST and university educators. This is an open access book.

    Description: This open access book explores knowledge practices by five women from different European contexts. Contributors document, analyze, and discuss how women employed practices of privacy to pursue knowledge that did not necessarily conform with the curriculum prescribed for them. The practices of Jane Lumley in England, Camila Herculiana in Padua, Victorine de Chastenay in Paris, as well as Elisabeth Sophie Marie and Philippine Charlotte in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, will help us to exemplify the delicate balance between audacity and obedience that women had to employ to be able to explore science, literature, philosophy, theology, and other types of learned activities. Cases range from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, presenting continuities and discontinuities across temporal and geographical lines of the strategies that women used to protect their knowledge production and retain intact their reputations as good Christian daughters, wives, and mothers. Taken together, the essays show how having access to privacy—the ability to regulate access to themselves while studying and learning—was a crucial condition for the success of the knowledge activities these women pursued. This is an open access book.

    Description: This open access book takes the biographical case of German feminist Käthe Schirmacher (1865–1930), a multilingual translator, widely travelled writer of fiction and non-fiction, and a disputatious activist to examine the travel and translation of ideas between the women’s movements that emerged in many countries in the late 19th and early 20th century. It discusses practices such as translating, interpreting, and excerpting from journals and books that spawned and supported transnational civic spaces and develops a theoretical framework to analyse these practices.     Description: This open access book investigates how representation of Native Americans and Mexican-origin im/migrants takes place in high school history textbooks. Manually analyzing text and images in United States textbooks from the 1950s to 2022, the book documents stories of White victory and domination over Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) groups that disproportionately fill educational curricula. While representation and accurate information of non-White perspectives improves over time, the same limited tropes tend to be recycled from one textbook to the next. Textual analysis is augmented by focus groups and interviews with BIPOC students in California high schools. Together, the data show how misrepresentation and absence of BIPOC perspectives in textbooks impact youth identity. This book argues for an innovative rethinking of US history curricula to consider which stories are told, and which perspectives are represented.

    Description: This open access book is the first of a two-volume series focusing on how people are being enabled or constrained to live well in today’s world, and how to bring into reality a world worth living in for all. The chapters offer unique narratives drawing on the perspectives of diverse groups such as: asylum-seeking and refugee youth in Australia, Finland, Norway and Scotland; young climate activists in Finland; Australian Aboriginal students, parents and community members; families of children who tube feed in Australia; and international research students in Sweden. The chapters reveal not just that different groups have different ideas about a world worth living in, but also show that, through their collaborative research initiative, the authors and their research participants were bringing worlds like these into being. The volume extends an invitation to readers and researchers in education and the social sciences to consider ways to foster education that realises transformed selves and transformed worlds: the good for each person, the good for humankind, and the good for the community of life on the planet. The book also includes theoretical chapters providing the background and rationale behind the notion of education as initiating people into ‘living well in a world worth living in'.     Description: Das vorliegende Open-Access-Buch folgt der übergreifenden Fragestellung, ob ein Kritiklernen im institutionell gebundenen politischen Unterricht möglich ist. Diese Fragestellung wird nicht aus einer institutionen- und schulsoziologischen, sondern aus einer lerntheoretischen und politikdidaktischen Perspektive entwickelt. Der Analysefokus richtet sich damit auf die Frage, wie subjektorientierte Lernprozesse in einer Gesellschaft strukturiert werden können, die durch spezifische soziale Verhältnisse geprägt ist. Das Kernanliegen der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht in der Erschließung der Gedankenwelt Antonio Gramscis für die aktuelle lerntheoretische und politikdidaktische Debatte. Dabei soll der Nachweis der analytischen Ergiebigkeit zentraler Kategorien aus den Schriften Antonio Gramscis, insbesondere der Hegemonie und des Alltagsverstandes, über den Weg einer systematischen Reflexion einschlägiger Sinnbildkonstruktionen geführt werden, denen in der aktuellen Fachdebatte eine zentrale Bedeutung zukommt. Aus einer hegemonietheoretisch gestützten konstruktiven Kritik der Sinnbildkonstruktionen werden Schlussfolgerungen für eine Theorie von Bildungs- und Lernprozessen gezogen, die sich in den Kontext der kritischen politischen Bildung einordnen lassen.

    Description: The reading experience and the self-referential stories of children between five and six years of age presented in this booklet are the result of the work elaborated by the transition students of the Franciscan School of Pius XII, within the framework of the activities of the psychology professional practice project, whose purpose was to approach narratives and stories as an excuse to navigate through the subjective productions elaborated from the reading experience. The elaboration of the stories allowed the construction of a space to relate personal events considered significant for the children. Therefore, each story that the reader will encounter speaks of a small world that found a way to be transmitted to others through narrative. Beyond building a story, the idea was to allow a moment to think about those experiences that give meaning to existence, as they are loaded with imagination, emotions and sensations, which is an opportunity to develop the process of conceiving themselves as subjects with a story.

    Description: This open access book evaluates research quality, quality of teaching and the relationship between the two through sound statistical methods, and in a comparative perspective with other European countries. In so doing, it covers an increasingly important topic for universities that affects university funding. It discusses whether university evaluation should be limited to a single factor or consider multiple dimensions of research, since academic careers, teaching and awarding degrees are intertwined. The chapters included in the book evaluate teaching and research, also taking the gender dimension into account, in order to understand where and when gender discrimination occurs in assessment. Divided into five sections, the book analyses the administrative data on the determinants of career completion of university students; increasing precariousness of academic careers, especially of young researchers; methods designed to assess research productivity when co-authorship and team production are becoming the standard practice; and interrelations between students’ achievements and teachers’ careers driven by research assessment. It brings together contributions from a large group of economists, statisticians and social scientists working under a project sponsored by ANVUR, the Italian agency for the evaluation of teaching and research of academic institutions. From an international perspective, the findings in this book are particularly interesting because despite low tuition costs, tertiary education in Italy has relatively low enrolment rates and even lower completion rates compared to those in other European and American countries. This book is of interest to researchers of the sociology of education, education policy, public administration, economics and statistics of education, and to administrators and policy makers working in the area of higher education.

It is a commitment to work with, in and from the communities, which is related to one of the objectives sought, which is to understand interculturality from the grassroots.     Description: Dieses Buch setzt sich mit alltäglicher Lebenssituation als Gegenstand pädagogischer Sprachdiagnostik auseinander und ist im Diskurs über Diagnostik und Förderung sprachlich-kommunikativer Kompetenzen zu verorten. Es wurde untersucht, welche Faktoren zur Konstruktion der alltäglichen Lebenssituation beitragen. Außerdem wurde ein Analyseverfahren für die pädagogische Sprachdiagnostik entwickelt, erprobt und evaluiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auf, dass Faktoren wie eigenaktives Handeln des Subjekts oder zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen zur Konstruktion alltäglicher Lebenssituation beitragen. Außerdem weisen die Befunde darauf hin, dass mit Anwendung eines in einer Alltagssituation durchgeführten problemzentrierten Interviews Informationen zur alltäglichen Lebenssituation eines sprachbeeinträchtigten Kindes erfasst werden können. Diese Informationen werden anhand des entwickelten Auswertungsleitfadens handlungstheoretisch analysiert. Daraus lassen sich Bedingungen der alltäglichen Lebenssituation rekonstruieren, um pädagogische Sprachfördersituationen zu gestalten, die auf die Erweiterung der sprachlichen Handlungsfähigkeit in der alltäglichen Lebenssituation gerichtet sind. Each suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities, and countries and has lasting effects for those close to the suicidal person." Suicidal behavior ranges from ideation in its different expressions, through threats, gestures and attempts, to the suicide itself. The presence of any of these indicators (ideation, threats, gestures and attempts) should be considered as a sign of high risk in the individual presenting them. The relationship between suicide and mental disorders is quite close, however, it does not mean that those who do not suffer from a mental disorder are exempt from this suicidal behavior, since there have been cases that occur impulsively as a response to a crisis that affects the ability to cope with the difficulties of life, such as economic problems, the breakup of sentimental or family relationships, or chronic pain and illness.

    Description: The first components of developmental psychology can perhaps be traced back to the social recognition of infancy and childhood. Many historians agree that this recognition came late. The French historian Philippe Ariès argues that in medieval society there was no room for childhood or the child as theoretical constructs. They would emerge in the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thus, although a certain sensitivity towards childhood appeared between the 16th and 17th centuries, it would seem that it was only in the 18th century that the child became the object of concern for some thinkers, mostly philosophers and pedagogues. There are several authors who are referents and it is worthwhile to review them, even if only briefly. At the time, Rousseau (1712-1778), in his Emilium, proposes an education centered on the natural evolution of the child, in which he highlights his particularities and differences and places childhood as a necessary and fundamental stage for man. The pedagogue Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827), sympathizes with some of Rousseau's ideas on the education of children and keeps a diary of his son's first two years, which becomes one of the first systematic observations that is assumed to be a precursor of observational methodology in early development. In line with the above, this text can only be understood as a first attempt, unfinished and open, to be continued. It is what the Anglos call a "text in progress", and that the ebook edition will allow us to reopen it without major difficulties. It is also, of course, an incitement to readers to complement it, discuss it or even controvert it. This is intended to be a living text and discussed within the community. It is possible that certain hypotheses about the facts found will give rise to controversy. A colleague warned that lightning will surely strike it as it is a provocative text. Let's hope so: as long as they are illuminating, it will have partially fulfilled its purpose.     Description: Los primeros componentes de la psicología del desarrollo tal vez puedan situarse a partir del reconocimiento social de la infancia y de la niñez. Muchos historiadores coinciden en afirmar que ese reconocimiento fue tardío. El historiador francés Philippe Ariès sostiene que en la sociedad medieval no había espacio para la infancia ni para el niño como constructos teóricos. Ellos emergerían en el transcurrir de los siglos XVII y XVIII. En su momento, Rousseau (1712-1778), en el Emilio propone una educación centrada en la evolución natural del niño, en la que destaca sus particularidades y sus diferencias y sitúa la infancia como una etapa necesaria y fundamental para el hombre. El pedagogo Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827), simpatiza con algunas de las ideas de Rousseau sobre la educación de los niños y lleva un diario sobre los dos primeros años de su hijo que se convierte en una de las primeras observaciones sistemáticas que se asume como precursora de la metodología observacional en el desarrollo temprano. Al hilo de lo anterior, este texto solo puede entenderse como un primer intento, inacabado y abierto, que deberá continuarse. Es lo que los anglos llaman un “texto en progreso”, y que la edición en ebook permitirá reabrir sin mayores dificultades. También es, desde luego, una incitación a los lectores para que lo complementen, lo discutan o incluso lo controviertan. Este quiere ser un texto vivo y discutido dentro de la comunidad. Posiblemente ciertas hipótesis sobre los hechos encontrados vayan a suscitar polémicas. Una colega advirtió que seguramente le caerán rayos y centellas en la medida que es un texto provocador. Ojalá así sea: mientras sean iluminantes habrá cumplido en parte su propósito. Queda de todas maneras, un gusto por escudriñar más minuciosamente nuestro pasado de cara al futuro y no solo a lo que no pudo ser.

    Description: This book has a series of characteristics that are worth highlighting. It begins its construction with a team of researchers from the Cognition and Representational Development Group of the Research Center of the Universidad del Valle, which articulates several groups such as the Research Group on Evaluation and Quality of Education (Giece); the Education Group, the Cognitive Development, Learning and Teaching Group, and the Cognition and Education Group. Likewise, the three doctoral programs in psychology in the region participate in its elaboration: Universidad del Valle, Universidad de San Buenaventura Cali and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Cali. In the first one, the authors were trained and learned that nonlinear dynamical systems can be a conceptual and methodological way to approach the study of cognitive development. The different works that make up the chapters of the book are ascribed to nonlinear dynamical systems, which offer an innovative conceptualization for thinking about developmental psychology in general and cognitive development in particular. This pioneering and committed task of the group materializes in significant advances in the use of methodologies more in line with the conceptual principles assumed.

Inicia su construcción con un equipo de investigadores del Grupo Cognición y Desarrollo Representacional, del Centro de Investigaciones de la Universidad del Valle, que articula diversos grupos tales como el Grupo de Investigación en Evaluación y Calidad de la Educación (Giece); el Grupo Educación, el Grupo Desarrollo Cognitivo, Aprendizaje y Enseñanza, y el Grupo Cognición y Educación. Así mismo, en su preparación involucra los tres programas de doctorado en psicología de la región: el de la Universidad del Valle, el de la Universidad de San Buenaventura Cali y el de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Cali. En el primero de ellos se formaron los autores y aprendieron que los sistemas dinámicos no lineales pueden ser un camino conceptual y metodológico para abordar el estudio del desarrollo cognitivo. Los distintos trabajos que conforman los capítulos del libro se adscriben a los sistemas dinámicos no lineales, que ofrecen una conceptualización innovadora para pensar la psicología del desarrollo en general y el desarrollo cognitivo en particular. Esta tarea pionera y comprometida del grupo, se concreta en avances significativos en el uso de metodologías más acordes con los principios conceptuales asumidos.

    Description: In diesem Open-Access-Buch untersucht Claudia Marusic anhand der Dokumentarischen Methode Handlungsorientierungen von Lehrpersonen aus Schulen mit und ohne personalisierte Lernkonzepte im Umgang mit Unterrichtsstörungen. Treten Störungen im Unterricht auf, sind Lehrpersonen oft gefordert, unter Affekt und Zeitdruck zu handeln. Im Umgang mit Unterrichtsstörungen werden ihre Wahrnehmung und ihr Handeln durch implizite, versteckte Orientierungen beeinflusst. Weiter nehmen unterschiedliche Unterrichtskontexte bzw. didaktische Arrangements eine zentrale Rolle bei der Produktion und Rezeption von Unterrichtsstörungen ein. Rekonstruiert wurden unter anderem drei Typen des Umgangs von Lehrpersonen mit Unterrichtsstörungen. Die Ergebnisse der Studie tragen zur gezielten Reflexion des Umgangs mit Unterrichtsstörungen bei und richten sich sowohl an interessierte Personen aus Forschung und Wissenschaft als auch an Lehrpersonen und Dozierende.

    Description: This open access publication outlines the underlying framework for gathering data on civic knowledge, attitudes, and engagement as well as contextual information, and it describes the assessment design for the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement’s (IEA) International Civic and Citizenship Education Study 2022. The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) investigates how young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries in the second decade of the 21st century. ICCS 2022 is a continuation of two earlier IEA studies, ICCS 2009 and ICCS 2016, and, for the first time, this survey includes the option of a computer-based assessment. Responding to enduring and emerging challenges of educating young people in a world where contexts of democracy and civic participation continue to change, the study addresses issues related to young people’s engagement through digital technologies, migration and diversity, perceptions of the political system, global citizenship, and education for sustainable development. Over the past 50 years, IEA has conducted comparative research studies in a range of domains focusing on educational policies, practices, and outcomes in many countries around the world. Prior to ICCS 2022, IEA conducted four international comparative studies of civic and citizenship education, with a first survey implemented in 1971, a second one in 1999, third in 2009 and fourth in 2016. ICCS 2022 data will allow education systems to evaluate the strengths of educational policies, both internationally, and in a regional context, and to measure progress in achieving critical components of their educational policy agendas.

    Description: Die Teilung Schleswigs nach Volksabstimmungen im Jahre 1920 hatte langfristige Folgen nördlich und südlich der neuen Grenze. Viele wurden durch Agitation und Abstimmung tief beeindruckt, sogar die Archive des Gebiets mussten geteilt werden. Nordschleswig wurde als ein Teil des Königreichs Dänemarks einverleibt. Diese wurde von einem nordschleswigschen Ministerium vorbereitet und kam bei der Konstruktion der Grenze sowie in Schule und Kirche zum Ausdruck. Die deutsche Minderheit widersetzte sich der Integration und während der Krisenjahre entstanden extreme politische Bewegungen. Diese Folgen werden in diesem Buch thematisiert, das ein Ergebnis einer deutsch-dänischen Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein und dem Rigsarkivet Aabenraa mit dem Studienzentrum für die Geschichte Schleswigs ist.

The chapters explore how faculty engage students in learning about sustainability and the ways in which working at the edge of what we know about sustainability can be a significant source of engagement, motivation, and challenge.     Description: This open access book presents a condensed history of Sociology in Mexico from its origins, through to the middle of the 19th century and up to the present day. The book analyses the interaction between sociology and the main economic, political and social change in the country, including the 1910 Mexican Revolution, the main social movements, the role of the intellectual exiles from Spain and Latin America, and the participation of women, who have often remained invisible in the history of sociology. The book explores how sociological discourse played a fundamental role in the separation of secular and public education and the search for a ‘national project’ from 1868 onwards, despite the lack of an institute of social research until 1930; how sociology became an autonomous social science, led by a few intellectuals and public figures, as it became institutionalized in universities, and the effect this had on the development of the discipline; the influence of Marxism during the 1970s; and the progression from a process of specialization after the fall of the Berlin Wall to a new trend of working in collective projects with an increasing interdisciplinary perspective in the first decades of the 21st century.

    Description: The writing of this text is based on the interest in elucidating the place of the subject in the field of science. The first challenge it assumes consists in situating the way in which science and medicine are linked, progressively giving rise to a particular mode of the physician's clinical work. This task requires identifying the type of science alluded to, as well as the type of medicine referred to; namely, that science arising from positivism and that medicine related to its principles. Having said this, what about the medical clinic? From there, the reflection on observation as a technique found within scientific medical practice comes to the surface and configures a particular relationship between medical knowledge, the physician as agent of this discourse and the patient. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the elucidation of the place of the subject in this structure of relationships, to show the relevance and validity of a clinical practice refounded by Freud on principles decentered from positivism. It is a different framework of thought, the psychoanalytic one, which proposes a clinical practice guided by listening to this subjective discomfort not (yet) conquered by nosological language and which entails psychic suffering.

    Description: La escritura del presente texto se sostiene en el interés de dilucidar el lugar del sujeto en el campo de la ciencia. El primer desafío que asume es situar el modo en que ciencia y medicina se enlazan, dando lugar de manera progresiva a un modo particular del quehacer clínico del médico. Esta tarea requiere significar el tipo de ciencia a la cual se alude así como también el tipo de medicina a la cual se hace referencia; a saber, aquella ciencia que surge del positivismo y aquella medicina emparentada con sus principios. Dicho esto ¿qué ocurre con la clínica médica? A partir de allí, se pone sobre la superficie la reflexión sobre la observación en tanto técnica que se halla en el seno de la práctica médica científica y configura una particular relación entre el saber médico, el médico en tanto que agente de ese discurso y el paciente. Aportar a la dilucidación del lugar del sujeto en esa estructura de relaciones, es la apuesta del presente trabajo que tiene como fin mostrar la pertinencia y vigencia de una práctica clínica refundada por Freud sobre principios descentrados del positivismo. Se trata de un marco de pensamiento distinto, el psicoanalítico, que propone una práctica clínica guiada por la escucha de aquel malestar subjetivo no conquistado (aún) por el lenguaje nosológico y que trae consigo un sufrimiento psíquico.

    Description: This open access book includes forty-one chapters about foreign observers’ discourses on Japan. These include a wide range of perspectives from the travelogues of curious visitors to academic theses by scholars, which offer us a broad spectrum of contents, reflecting a variety of attitudes toward Japan. The works were written during the period from the 1850s to the 1980s, a timespan during which Japan became, in stages, more open to the outside world after a long isolation under the Tokugawa shogunate. From the perspective of “Japanology,” one can discern three distinct periods of rising interest in the country from abroad. The first tide of such interest came shortly after the opening of Japan, when various foreign travelers, including those who could not be included in this book, came over and wrote down their impressions of the country—which was, for them, a land of mystery and mystique, which had just opened its doors to them. The second wave arose at the beginning of the twentieth century, just after the Russo-Japanese War, when Japan again generated a remarkable surge of interest as a “miracle” in Asia that had pulled off the wondrous feat of defeating a white superpower. The third wave was more recent, which took place from the late 1960s to the 1980s, a period of high economic growth when the “miracle” of Japan’s remarkable economic recovery from the defeat of World War II attracted enthusiastic and curious attention from the outside world once again. It is not the intention of this book to directly highlight such historical transitions, but these forty-two brilliant mirrors (forty-one chapters, including forty-two discourses), even when looked in casually, provide us with unexpected insights and various perspectives. Shōichi Saeki (1922–2016) was Professor Emeritus, the University of Tokyo. Tōru Haga (1931–2020) was Professor Emeritus, International Research Center for Japanese Studies.

    Description: The book is based on the experience of the implementation of the proposal for the exercise of citizenship of people with hearing disabilities as a form of social inclusion, selected at national level in the framework of the second call of the Social Service Program in Higher Education, carried out by the Ministry of National Education and the Colombian Association of Universities (Ascun). This work, carried out jointly by the Faculty of Psychology of the Universidad de San Buenaventura, Cali, and the Asociación de Sordos del Valle (Asorval), between August and December 2010, had the participation of fifteen sixth semester students, three seventh semester students, four ninth semester students and one tenth semester psychology student; and twenty-six young people from Asorval. The purpose of this text is to sensitize listeners about the implications of living in a city when one is deaf, which implies the problems of those who face this situation in their daily lives, but also the strengths and actions they develop to change it. For this purpose, the voices of the young participants of this project are rescued, taking as a reference what they wanted to show to the hearing community.

Este trabajo, realizado conjuntamente por la Facultad de Psicología de la Universidad de San Buenaventura, sede Cali, y la Asociación de Sordos del Valle (Asorval), entre agosto y diciembre de 2010, contó con la participación de quince estudiantes de sexto semestre, tres de séptimo, cuatro de noveno y uno de décimo semestre de psicología; y veintiséis jóvenes de Asorval. El propósito de este texto es sensibilizar a los oyentes sobre las implicaciones de vivir en una ciudad cuando se es sordo, lo que implica los problemas de quienes enfrentan esta situación en su vida cotidiana, pero también las fortalezas y acciones que desarrollan para cambiarla. Para ello, se rescatan las voces de los jóvenes participantes de este proyecto, tomando como referencia lo que ellos quisieron mostrar a la comunidad oyente.

    Description: This open access edited volume investigates children and youth's deep entanglement in today's major global, national, and local transformations and processes: wherein they are not mere spectators and objects of transformations but instead actively shape them through various social, economic, and political representations. International contributions illuminate the problems that arise when children's rights and participation become a site of contestation and power over who represents whom, what, when, and where. The authors do not provide simple solutions, instead offering an understanding of the fundamental nature of these problems as founded in the application of rights and the nature of representation in modern society. Washington’s autobiographies, and Charles W. Chesnutt’s short fiction.     Description: Clinical understandings. An approach from psychodynamics and post-rationalism aims to address different typical themes such as bonding relationships, guilt, identity and narrative through a permanent dialogue between theory and casuistry. The book is composed of two parts: in the first part, psychodynamic theories are the frame of reference for the thematic and clinical approach; on the other hand, in the second part, understanding and discussion are constructed from a post-rationalist perspective. In turn, attachment theory is interwoven between the different chapters as a guideline for clinical understanding. Today, the clinician is in need of constant updating and of including a panoramic view in his or her gaze, since diagnostic accuracy not only requires uncovering what underlies, but also needs to see what clouds the obvious. This text seeks to broaden the understanding and reasoning of the different human manifestations in order to favor the diagnostic and integral process in the psychotherapeutic context, which, in addition, we hope will have an impact on the patient-therapist relationship and thus become study and consultation material for professional psychotherapists and psychotherapists in training.

Un acercamiento desde la psicodinámica y el posracionalismo tiene como objetivo realizar un acercamiento a diferentes típicos como las relaciones vinculares, el sentimiento de culpa, la identidad y la narrativa a través de un diálogo permanente entre la teoría y la casuística. El libro se compone de dos partes: en la primera, las teorías psicodinámicas son el marco de referencia para el abordaje temático y clínico; por su parte, en la segunda, la comprensión y el debate se construyen desde una perspectiva posracionalista. A su vez, la teoría del apego se entreteje entre diferentes capítulos como un orientador de la comprensión clínica. En el presente, el clínico se ve instado a la actualización constante y a incluir en su mirada una visión panorámica, pues la precisión diagnóstica no solo demanda el develamiento de lo que subyace, también precisa ver aquello que nubla por lo flagrante. Este texto busca ampliar la comprensión y razonamiento de diferentes manifestaciones humanas con el fin de favorecer el proceso diagnóstico y comprensivo en el contexto psicoterapéutico, el cual, además, esperamos tenga impacto en la relación paciente terapeuta y se convierta así en material de estudio y consulta para psicoterapeutas profesionales y en formación.

    Description: This open access book brings together theoretical, empirical, methodological, and practical insights from various countries on effective teaching. It particularly focuses on discussing issues pertaining to effective teaching behaviour including definitions and conceptualizations, measurement, differences, and importance to student outcomes from international perspectives. The book will draw upon the rich cultures with diverse contexts involving Asia, Australia, Africa, America, and Europe which serve as the background setting to better understand teaching quality from a wide spectrum of educational systems and performances. It shows that effective teaching behaviour can be conceptualized and operationalized uniformly using specific frameworks and measures, but also addresses some limitations that should be tackled. The book discusses promising ways to measure and compare effective teaching behaviour from classical test theory (CTT) as well as item response theory (IRT) perspectives. It indicates that effective teaching behaviour in diverse countries follows a systematic level of complexity, which provides an avenue for ongoing teacher education and teacher professional development. It discusses the interrelated domains of effective teaching behaviour including contemporary trends of differentiation. The book continues with examining similarities and differences in effective teaching behaviour across countries. It builds on the understanding of cultural traditions across countries as profoundly reflected in the classroom processes.

    Description: This open access book challenges international policy ‘groupthink’ about lifelong learning. Adult learning – too long a servant of business competitiveness – should be reimagined as central to democratic society. Young adults, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, engage more in education and training, and learn more day-to-day at work, if provision is democratically organised and based on enduring and inclusive institutional networks, and when jobs encourage and reward the acquisition of skills. Using innovative qualitative and quantitative methods, the contributors develop a critical perspective on dominant policies, investigating – across the European Union and Australia – how ‘vulnerable’ young adults experience programmes designed to improve their ‘employability’, and how ‘skills for jobs’ policies squeeze out wider – and wiser – ideas of what education and training should do. Chapters show why some provision works for those with poor educational backgrounds, why labour market and educational institutions matter so much, how adult education can empower and expand people’s agency, and the challenges of using artificial intelligence in lifelong learning policy-making. Several investigate the pivotal role of workplace learning in organisational life, and in learning during ‘emerging adulthood’. Important comparative studies of workplace learning in the metals, retail and adult education sectors show the role of management, trade unions and social movements in young adults’ learning.

    Description: Here in this book are formulated the central questions of our homecoming: How to found an active solidarity, and how to conjure Circe's charm that held Ulysses for so long, not without his consent? In short, how to get out of the labyrinth that imprisons Theseus, how to melt the thanatic aporia. Today a new jus-gentium based on the inalienable rights of the dignity of the person is being vigorously born under all the banners of the world. This global right of protection of the fundamental rights protected, the conventions and norms of the United Nations and of all the national and international courts, together with a new International Humanitarian Law, point the way back home, and from there all the prisoners of Circe are freed, from there they return home, which are none other than the bloody despotisms for which the last century and the beginning of this one will be known and repudiated, together with the genocide of entire populations, as attested by the cases of our International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda and other international and regional human rights forums. This new language exists. This task is also incumbent upon legal language, since the norm in its logical context of normative imputation refers to intersubjective conduct, as Giorgio Del Vecchio, the great Italian philosopher, had expressed decades ago. The inscription of the norm, the discrimination between what is permitted and what is forbidden, and its consequent legal metaphor, -in the author's expression following Legendre-, constructs human subjectivity, which can only be thought of as intersubjectivity Amelia has already started vigorously in that direction!

    Description: Aquí en este libro están formuladas las preguntas centrales de nuestra vuelta al hogar ¿Cómo fundar una solidaridad activa?, y, ¿cómo conjurar el encanto de Circe que retuvo a Ulíses por tanto tiempo, no sin su consentimiento? En suma, cómo salir del laberinto que aprisiona a Teseo, cómo fundir la aporía tanática. Hoy está naciendo vigorosamente un nuevo jus-gentium fundado en los derechos inalienables de la dignidad de la persona bajo todas las banderas del orbe. Ese derecho global de protección de los derechos fundamentales amparados, las convenciones y normas de las Naciones Unidas y de todos los tribunales nacionales e internacionales, junto a un nuevo Derecho Internacional Humanitario, señalan el camino de retorno al hogar, y desde allí se liberan, desde allí retornan a su hogar todos los prisioneros de Circe, que no son otra cosa que los despotismos sangrientos por los que la centuria pasada y los comienzos de esta, serán conocidos y repudiados, junto al genocidio de poblaciones enteras, como lo atestiguan los casos de nuestro Tribunal Penal Internacional para la ex-Yugoslavia y de Ruanda y demás foros internacionales y regionales de derechos humanos. Ese nuevo leguaje existe. Esta tarea también compete al lenguaje jurídico ya que la norma en su contexto lógico de imputación normativa refiere a la conducta intersubjetiva, como Giorgio Del Vecchio, el gran filósofo italiano, lo había expresado desde hace décadas. La inscripción de la norma, la discriminación entre lo permitido y lo prohibido, y su consecuente metáfora jurídica, –en expresión de la autora siguiendo a Legendre–, construye la subjetividad humana, que sólo se puede pensar como intersubjetividad ¡Amelia ya ha comenzado vigorosamente en esa dirección!

    Description: In diesem Open.Access-Buch wird gezeigt, dass eine verminderte Fähigkeit zur Simultanerfassung eine Ursache von Rechenschwäche sein kann. Mathematische Lernschwierigkeiten offenbaren sich häufig schon im frühen Grundschulunterricht. Die gängigen Lernmaterialien im mathematischen Anfangsunterricht verwenden zur Mengendarstellung die Kraft der Fünf, die für betroffene Schüler*innen eine besondere Hürde darstellt. In einem Educational Design Research-Projekt wurde gemeinsam mit Personen mit Trisomie 21, dem Down-Syndrom, das mathildr-System entwickelt. Das System eignet sich in der Binnendifferenzierung als Alternative zur Kraft der Fünf und kann zur Entwicklung einer Mengenvorstellung und zum Erlernen des Kopfrechnens verwendet werden. In einer formativen Evaluation wurden die Lernfortschritte von 30 Schüler*innen mit Trisomie 21 im Alter von vier bis 17 Jahren im Zusammenhang mit dem mathildr-System dokumentiert. Ein abschließendes Quasi-Experiment mit 36 Schüler*innen mit Trisomie 21 zeigt zudem, dass sich mathildr zur quasi-simultanen Mengenerfassung eignet. Im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes wurden Lernmaterialien entwickelt, die Einzug an Schulen gehalten haben.

    Description: This open access book explores the gendered reality of learning philosophy at the university level, investigating the ways in which women and minority students become alienated from the social practices of a male-dominated field, and examining pedagogical solutions to this problem. It covers the roles and the interactions of the professor and student in the following ways: (1) the historical situation, (2) the affective, social and bodily situation, and (3) the moral situation. This text analyzes women’s passion for philosophy as a quest for truth, as well as their partial alienation from the social practices of philosophy. It demonstrates that recognition, generosity, and care are central ingredients of good learning and teaching experiences. Providing case studies of experimental courses in philosophy, the book discusses a variety of pedagogical approaches that might increase the inclusiveness of a philosophical education: novel and more gender-balanced ways of interpreting the history of philosophy, problem-based learning as a means of emancipating the student from the traditional master–disciple relationship, body awareness practices as a way of challenging the “disembodying” tendencies of philosophy, and a pluralism of methods to address the needs of different kinds of learners. Thanks to these features, the book is particularly useful for philosophy professors at the university level, but it also provides insights for all readers who feel puzzled about the persistent underrepresentation of women in philosophy.

    Description: In Colombia, as in other Latin American countries, educational reforms are being carried out with the aim of promoting quality education. Thus, current psychology programs undergo from time to time an evaluation and rethinking of their curricula, content, methods, assessment practices and other aspects in order to improve, redefine and contextualize psychology education. Thus, this book invites us to reflect on how, why and for what purpose to train psychologists today in Colombia and how research training provides spaces for reflection to think about new perspectives and approaches to the social challenges of our country. Moreover, the curriculum, as a reiterative school practice, ends up producing and reproducing unsuspected subjective forms according to the demands of a society, thus producing particular ways of acting and thinking that, among other aspects, are alienating. The proposal, then, is to identify this situation in order to transcend a merely technical curriculum and reproducer of social practices and bet on an emancipating curriculum, autonomizing the subjects and transforming the practices of a social group. Hence, questioning and debating the training in psychology is central both for the discipline and for the context.

Así, los programas en psicología actuales cada tanto tiempo someten a evaluación y replanteamiento su currículo, contenidos, métodos, prácticas evaluativas y demás aspectos con el fin de mejorar, redefinir y contextualizar la formación en psicología. Así, el presente libro invita a reflexionar acerca de cómo, por qué y para qué formar psicólogos hoy en Colombia y de qué manera la formación en investigación propicia espacios de reflexión para pensar nuevas miradas y apuestas ante los desafíos sociales de nuestro país. Además, el currículo en cuanto práctica escolar reiterativa, termina produciendo y reproduciendo insospechadamente formas subjetivas acordes con las demandas de una sociedad, produciendo así formas particulares de actuar y de pensar que, entre otros aspectos, son alienantes. La propuesta estribaría, entonces, en identificar dicha situación para trascender un currículo meramente técnico y reproductor de prácticas sociales y apostar por un currículo emancipador, autonomizador de los sujetos y transformador de las prácticas de un grupo social. De ahí que preguntarse y debatir la formación en psicología resulta central tanto para la disciplina como para el contexto.

    Description: This open access book aimes to close a critical research gap in understanding how frequently German-speaking adolescents come into contact with the English language through various media channels, such as television, books, or the internet, and how this contact influences learners’ English competences. In addition, this research project explores the effect of family background and gender on this contact. The analysis shows frequent contact with English-language media content by young learners in Germany and Switzerland. More frequent contact was associated with higher language competences. Differences could be found in the preferences of media content and type of media channels due to socio-economic family background and gender.

The authors adopt a pluralistic conceptual framework which uncovers three analytical elements – contexts, mediations, and type of effects – for unpacking empirical manifestations. The publicly funded higher education systems in Nordic countries provide solid empirical insights into how digital transformations have gained ground before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and chapter contributions demonstrate how international digitalisation trends (such as in the global EdTech industry) impact on the core activities of higher education institutions (HEIs). The findings underscore the importance of assessments that consider multiple sub-systems within HEIs, as well as the complex relationships between them. It was one of the most exciting things he experienced, so at first he decided to become a gunner. Then he was transferred to Astorga where, already as a professional soldier, he began to be assigned missions. He didn't like the place very much, but it was there that he started his first combat without direct fire. He was in several bases during the next three years, and was sent to secret missions in Kosovo and Lebanon, where he came to know what it was like to cross fires and risk his life for the conviction of defending a country he already felt as his own.

    Description: Marek Thee was a Jewish Polish journalist, scholar, and activist. This book tells his life from narrowly escaping death in the Holocaust to exile in Palestine, where he became attached to the Polish consular service. On his return to Poland in 1950, he worked for the Foreign Ministry and later for the Polish Institute for International Affairs. He served as Head of the Polish delegation to the International Control Commission in Indochina in the late 1950s. In 1968 he lost his job and his Polish citizenship in a nationalistic and antisemitic campaign. He was able to move to Norway where he worked for twenty years at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), editing an international quarterly journal, Bulletin of Peace Proposals and doing research on the arms race. In retirement, he continued his research and writing at the Norwegian Human Rights Institute. The book vividly relates the drama of his life in Poland, Palestine, Indochina, and Norway. This is an open access book.

    Description: The family has been recognized in most societies as an important organizational form, due to the fact that it is attributed functions such as procreation, the socialization process, survival, physical and mental well-being, education, satisfaction of affective needs, initial configuration of personal identity, among others, all functions that influence individuals, Satir (2002) states that in the family elements are generated that will determine in the individual states of health and strength or states of psychic or emotional illness. The family has been transformed from the nuclear model to the emergence of various family forms which, according to Beck and Beck-Gernsheim (2003) "continue to play an important role, but at the same time, and this is what is new, autonomy, independence and personal space are valued much more than before" (p. 191). When the family creates, based on its structure and resources, a family business for productive and lucrative purposes, an alternative dynamic is generated that can lead to ambivalent and conflictive situations for its members, affecting both the family and the business structure.

Wie müssen sie ausgestaltet sein, um beim Lernen und Problemlösen unterstützend zu wirken und die Lernenden zum kritischen Denken (Critical Thinking) anzuregen? Der vorliegende zweite Band ist Teil eines zweibändigen Sammelwerks; die beiden Bände sind weitgehend unabhängig voneinander lesbar und unterscheiden sich in ihrem inhaltlichen Fokus: Während Band 1 grundsätzliche Perspektiven beleuchtet, fokussiert Band 2 eher auf konkrete digitale Tools und Methoden für die Unterrichtspraxis. Die Beiträge wurden im Rahmen des Projekts „Die Zukunft des MINT-Lernens – Denkfabrik für Unterricht mit digitalen Technologien“, gefördert durch die Deutsche Telekom Stiftung, entwickelt. Sie decken verschiedene (assoziierte) Projekte des Entwicklungskonsortiums der beteiligten Hochschulstandorte ab und bieten zukunftsweisendes Wissen zum Thema.

Formen der Bewältigung und Kriterien des Studienerfolgs sind im Vergleich zu den Herausforderungen und Barrieren, mit denen First-in-Family Studierende konfrontiert sein können, bisher kaum untersucht worden. Mit diesem Buch werden erstmals umfassend jene Lebensbereiche beleuchtet, in die Studierende außerhalb der Universität eingebettet sind und die eine maßgebliche Rolle in Bezug auf deren Studienerfolg spielen. Den theoretischen Rahmen bilden drei Ansätze: (1) die Relationale Theorie Pierre Bourdieus, (2) weiterführende strukturtheoretische Überlegungen sowie (3) das Konzept der Alltäglichen Lebensführung.     Description: This open access book explores a wide-ranging discussion about the sociopolitical, cultural, and scientific ramifications of speciesism and world views that derive from it. In this light, it integrates subjects across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The 21st-century western world is anthropocentric to an extreme; we adopt unreasonably self-centered and self-serving ideas and lifestyles. Americans consume more energy resources per person than most other nations on Earth and have little concept of how human ecology and population biology interface with global sustainability. We draw upon religion, popular culture, politics, and technology to justify our views and actions, yet remain self-centered because our considerations rarely extend beyond our immediate interests. Stepping upward on the hierarchy from “racism,” “speciesism” likewise refers to the view that unique natural kinds (species) exist and are an important structural element of biodiversity. This ideology manifests in the cultural idea that humans are distinct from and intrinsically superior to other forms of life. It further carries a plurality of implications for how we perceive ourselves in relation to nature, how we view Judeo-Christian religions and their tenets, how we respond to scientific data about social problems such as climate change, and how willing we are to change our actions in the face of evidence.

    Description: This open access book provides a current view on education, equity and inclusion within the lens of education for a sustainable North. The first book published by the University of the Arctic Thematic Network for Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity (Including the North: A comparative study of the policies on inclusion and equity in the circumpolar North, 2019) highlighted policies of inclusion and equity in education in national and regional contexts. This new book explores in more depth the provision of education across the north, focusing on challenges and innovations in meeting the needs of diverse learners in remote and rapidly changing contexts. While many texts address issues of equity, inclusion and diversity, they are almost all focused on the global South, and miss the lessons that can be learned from Northern regions. This book offers an extended essay on teaching and learning through various perspectives and experiences with the aim of creating a more sustainable North. It is structured around two main themes: 1) Supporting Teachers for Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom including consideration of language and identity issues, 2) Engendering community solutions to structural and geographical challenges in education in the circumpolar north.

Es ist ein seit Jahren robuster Befund, dass sich der Transfer von Ergebnissen der Schulinspektion in die Schulentwicklungspraxis nicht im erwarteten Maße erfüllt. In der Hoffnung auf nachhaltigere Effekte an Schulen gerät bei der Diskussion um Schulinspektion in Deutschland die Zusammenarbeit beteiligter Akteure zunehmend in den Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit. Christina Luig arbeitet anhand von Experteninterviews aus verschiedenen Akteursperspektiven Modi der Handlungskoordination heraus und identifiziert vorherrschende Handlungslogiken, die auf Steuerungsproblematiken und Rollenkonflikte im Akteurskonglomerat hinweisen. So lassen sich die Transferbedingungen von Inspektionsdaten in die Schulentwicklungspraxis besser verstehen und Überlegungen skizzieren, in welche Richtung sich Schulinspektion weiterdenken lassen sollte.

    Description: The most significant results of this research allowed us to understand that there are interesting transformations in the way young people assume religion, sex, the future and university life, which shows the important role played by globalization in the formation of identities that are now more flexible, liquid and far from the moralistic logic of modernist times. It also showed that although these young people are obliged to comply with the mandate to be university students in the eyes of their family and friends, this does not mean that they know how to achieve it, nor that they have a university institution that facilitates this process. For this reason, the university, in many cases, is assumed as a "temporary escape route" that extends the social moratorium of the subjects, thus creating an illusory halo of expectation of social mobility that will probably never occur through professionalization.

    Description: Los resultados más significativos de esta investigación permitieron comprender que hay interesantes transformaciones en la forma como los jóvenes asumen la religión, el sexo, el futuro y la vida universitaria, lo que muestra el papel importante que juega la globalización en la formación de identidades que son ahora más flexibles, líquidas y lejanas a la lógica moralista de los tiempos modernistas. Igualmente, permitió constatar que si bien estos jóvenes se encuentran obligados a cumplir con el mandato de ser universitarios ante sus familiares y amigos, esto no significa que sepan cómo lograrlo ni que cuenten con una institución universitaria que facilite este proceso. Por esto, la universidad, en muchos casos, es asumida como un “escampadero provisional” que amplía la moratoria social de los sujetos, creando así un halo ilusorio de expectativa de movilidad social que probablemente jamás ocurrirá por la vía de la profesionalización.
