    Description: This open access book provokes critical thinking regarding the most ambitious Chinese project since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The book presents extensive quality research and original insights in assessing the status of China’s outbound investment and construction projects under the BRI umbrella. Referring to case studies and projects of selected countries from Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, the author sheds new light on the issues and problems associated with the BRI's implementation and discusses both the readjustments and prospects for the BRI.     Description: This open access book explores knowledge practices by five women from different European contexts. Contributors document, analyze, and discuss how women employed practices of privacy to pursue knowledge that did not necessarily conform with the curriculum prescribed for them. The practices of Jane Lumley in England, Camila Herculiana in Padua, Victorine de Chastenay in Paris, as well as Elisabeth Sophie Marie and Philippine Charlotte in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, will help us to exemplify the delicate balance between audacity and obedience that women had to employ to be able to explore science, literature, philosophy, theology, and other types of learned activities. Cases range from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, presenting continuities and discontinuities across temporal and geographical lines of the strategies that women used to protect their knowledge production and retain intact their reputations as good Christian daughters, wives, and mothers. Taken together, the essays show how having access to privacy—the ability to regulate access to themselves while studying and learning—was a crucial condition for the success of the knowledge activities these women pursued. This is an open access book.

    Description: This open access book takes the biographical case of German feminist Käthe Schirmacher (1865–1930), a multilingual translator, widely travelled writer of fiction and non-fiction, and a disputatious activist to examine the travel and translation of ideas between the women’s movements that emerged in many countries in the late 19th and early 20th century.     Description: This open access book includes forty-one chapters about foreign observers’ discourses on Japan. These include a wide range of perspectives from the travelogues of curious visitors to academic theses by scholars, which offer us a broad spectrum of contents, reflecting a variety of attitudes toward Japan. The works were written during the period from the 1850s to the 1980s, a timespan during which Japan became, in stages, more open to the outside world after a long isolation under the Tokugawa shogunate. From the perspective of “Japanology,” one can discern three distinct periods of rising interest in the country from abroad. The first tide of such interest came shortly after the opening of Japan, when various foreign travelers, including those who could not be included in this book, came over and wrote down their impressions of the country—which was, for them, a land of mystery and mystique, which had just opened its doors to them. The second wave arose at the beginning of the twentieth century, just after the Russo-Japanese War, when Japan again generated a remarkable surge of interest as a “miracle” in Asia that had pulled off the wondrous feat of defeating a white superpower. The third wave was more recent, which took place from the late 1960s to the 1980s, a period of high economic growth when the “miracle” of Japan’s remarkable economic recovery from the defeat of World War II attracted enthusiastic and curious attention from the outside world once again. It is not the intention of this book to directly highlight such historical transitions, but these forty-two brilliant mirrors (forty-one chapters, including forty-two discourses), even when looked in casually, provide us with unexpected insights and various perspectives. Shōichi Saeki (1922–2016) was Professor Emeritus, the University of Tokyo. Tōru Haga (1931–2020) was Professor Emeritus, International Research Center for Japanese Studies.

    Description: This open access book suggests new ways of reading nineteenth-century African American literature environmentally. Combining insights from ecocriticism, African American studies, and Foucauldian theory, Matthias Klestil examines forms of environmental knowledge in African American writing ranging from antebellum slave narratives and pamphlets to Charlotte Forten’s journals, Booker T. Washington’s autobiographies, and Charles W. Chesnutt’s short fiction. The volume highlights how literary forms of environmental knowledge in the African American tradition were shaped by the histories of slavery and race, mainstream environmental writing traditions, and African American forms of expression and intertextuality. Turning to the Underground Railroad, debates over education and home-building, and the aesthetics of the pastoral and the georgic, Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature provides an original perspective on the African American ecoliterary tradition that uncovers new facets of canonical and understudied texts and offers new directions for ecocriticism and African American studies.

    Description: Marek Thee was a Jewish Polish journalist, scholar, and activist. This book tells his life from narrowly escaping death in the Holocaust to exile in Palestine, where he became attached to the Polish consular service. On his return to Poland in 1950, he worked for the Foreign Ministry and later for the Polish Institute for International Affairs. He served as Head of the Polish delegation to the International Control Commission in Indochina in the late 1950s. In 1968 he lost his job and his Polish citizenship in a nationalistic and antisemitic campaign. He was able to move to Norway where he worked for twenty years at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), editing an international quarterly journal, Bulletin of Peace Proposals and doing research on the arms race. In retirement, he continued his research and writing at the Norwegian Human Rights Institute. The book vividly relates the drama of his life in Poland, Palestine, Indochina, and Norway. This is an open access book.

    Description: This open access book explores a wide-ranging discussion about the sociopolitical, cultural, and scientific ramifications of speciesism and world views that derive from it. In this light, it integrates subjects across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The 21st-century western world is anthropocentric to an extreme; we adopt unreasonably self-centered and self-serving ideas and lifestyles. Americans consume more energy resources per person than most other nations on Earth and have little concept of how human ecology and population biology interface with global sustainability. We draw upon religion, popular culture, politics, and technology to justify our views and actions, yet remain self-centered because our considerations rarely extend beyond our immediate interests. Stepping upward on the hierarchy from “racism,” “speciesism” likewise refers to the view that unique natural kinds (species) exist and are an important structural element of biodiversity. This ideology manifests in the cultural idea that humans are distinct from and intrinsically superior to other forms of life. It further carries a plurality of implications for how we perceive ourselves in relation to nature, how we view Judeo-Christian religions and their tenets, how we respond to scientific data about social problems such as climate change, and how willing we are to change our actions in the face of evidence.

    Description: « Ce livre devenu un classique », selon Owen Chadwick, comprend deux parties dont seule la seconde est traduite ici, la première ayant déjà fait l’objet d’une traduction en 1968. John Henry Newman, nommé recteur fondateur, en 1851, d’une université catholique à Dublin, réfléchit aux objectifs d’une telle institution. Il met au premier plan la formation de l’esprit tout autant que l’acquisition du savoir afin de parvenir à une véritable culture humaniste. Il traite des rapports entre raison et foi, science et théologie, il insiste sur les liens qui unissent langue et littérature, il aborde les problèmes d’éthique médicale ; il préconise une recherche libre de tout préjugé mais éclairée par une pensée chrétienne qui a assimilé la culture antique. Cependant il n’ignore pas les applications pratiques qu’entraîne une telle création. Un ensemble de facultés, complémentaires les unes des autres, devra se développer à partir du noyau initial qu’est la Faculté des Arts et des Lettres, élément essentiel de tout enseignement universitaire. Celui-ci sera ainsi vivifié par la recherche et maintiendra le rapport d’un savoir particulier à une connaissance plus générale. À notre époque où l’Université s’interroge sur sa raison d’être, l’idéal exigeant de Newman reste tout à fait d’actualité.

    Description: Cette étude sur le clergé mérovingien et carolingien, envisagée dans ses rapports avec le pouvoir politique et dans son activité pastorale, est saisie dans une perspective évolutive pour faire ressortir les changements et les différences selon les temps et les lieux. L’auteur, a dû embrasser une documentation énorme et pulvérisée : les listes épiscopales ou abbatiales, les canons des conciles, les capitulaires, les vies des saints lorsqu’elles existent et il a réussi de la sorte à dégager des constatations nouvelles, apportant une image vivante, diversifiée et contrastée du monde ecclésiastique à l’époque franque. On savait déjà que ce monde n’était pas statique et homogène, mais on ne le savait pas avec une telle précision. Durant cinq siècles, le clergé fut en quête de son identité : fonctionnaire public ou homme de Dieu. Ainsi se juxtaposent un Martin qui récuse les dotations fiscales de l’État et un Rémi qui les sollicite, des clercs mondains attachés à leurs privilèges et des évêques, inspirés par Lérins qui procèdent à une conversion des mœurs avant d’entrer en charge, enfin des prélats aristocrates, ayant un sens aigu du devoir et du droit pour servir de médiateur auprès de Dieu et du prince et des clercs simoniaques, devenus les serviles vassaux des clans aristocratiques. Le baptême de Clovis avait laissé espérer une docilité du pouvoir aux conseils de l’épiscopat, le concile d’Orléans de 511 plaça le clergé sous la coupe royale. Les revenus des diocèses destinés aux œuvres de paix furent affectés pour la guerre et les synodes se transformèrent en tribunaux politiques. Grégoire-le-Grand et les moines luxoviens dénoncèrent ces vices et affirmèrent une spécificité et une qualité du clergé par un costume et un mode de vie. Boniface dénonça les falsipiscopi violents et prévaricateurs puis Chrodegang fit du clergé l’organisateur de la liturgie impériale et des grandes cérémonies expiatoires pour le salut de l’empire carolingien. Le bilan dressé en 811 par Charlemagne, de fonctionnaires corrompus et de médiocres pasteurs, n’est guère flatteur. Cette vision cache l’action en profondeur des prélats gallo-romains, du Liber Pastoralis et des irlandais pour faire du clerc un vitae evangelicae imitator et non pas un simple intendant des grands susceptible de s’engager contre les unions incestueuses et prônant le repos dominical. Par ailleurs, la prolixité liturgique d’inspiration orientale s’uniformisa sur le modèle romain pour mieux répondre et encadrer une religiosité populaire exubérante envers les reliques et le culte des saints. Le clergé parvint ainsi à s’imposer dans la société au prix d’une exigence morale interne considérable inspirée par le courant monastique et d’une soumission progressive des pêcheurs à une pénitence non moins rigoureuse.

Pour autant, ressortent les spécificités sociales et culturelles de trajectoires individuelles, disjointes parfois dans les écarts de tranches d’âge, restituant pour l’historien la singularité de positionnements politiques mus par l’intransigeance de l’engagement.

    Description: Incapable de vaincre militairement la Grande-Bretagne sur les mers, Napoléon 1er recourt à la guerre économique sur le continent. Pour ce faire, il envisage une fermeture totale du marché européen aux produits britanniques. Les interdictions commerciales françaises et les mesures de représailles anglaises représentaient une grave menace pour les négociants des villes portuaires de l’Empire napoléonien. Par conséquent, ceux-ci s’efforcent de contrecarrer la législation prohibitive du Blocus continental par tous les moyens possibles. L’analyse des réactions du négoce de Bordeaux, Hambourg et Livourne démontre que le recours aux navires neutres, la déviation des routes commerciales, la corruption et la contrebande sont des armes puissantes qui rendent largement inefficaces les tentatives du régime d’interdire les relations commerciales entre la Grande-Bretagne et l’Europe. L’étude comparée des trois villes permet de constater que cette incapacité du régime napoléonien à appliquer efficacement sa politique commerciale n’est pas une défaillance locale, occasionnelle, due à une conjoncture particulière, mais plutôt une donnée structurelle qui s’explique par des faiblesses internes à toute son administration, et par l’existence de cet adversaire redoutable qu’est le négoce, avec ses intérêts souvent opposés à ceux du régime, et dont les logiques et les horizons internationaux ne pouvaient pas se plier à une optique nationale et étatique.

    Description: L’ouvrage est la version abrégée d’une thèse de doctorat d’histoire dont le projet de recherche était de contribuer à l’histoire maritime du xixe siècle à partir de l’observatoire particulier que constitue Calais, port secondaire dans l’ensemble français mais maillon essentiel sur la route de Paris à Londres. A cette fin, l’auteur analyse l’extension des infrastructures et des équipements du port ainsi que l’intensification des échanges entre 1814 et 1914, dans la perspective des rapports entre le port et la ville. Les mutations technologiques et les fluctuations dues à la concurrence dans le passage transmanche rythment l’histoire du port de Calais au xixe siècle tandis que l’activité urbaine est bouleversée très tôt par la naturalisation de l’industrie anglaise des tulles et dentelles mécaniques qui transforment Calais et Saint-Pierre en « Nottingham français » dès le milieu du siècle. Le passage des voyageurs est la fonction essentielle du port et, comme de nos jours, elle a tendance à accaparer les autres activités maritimes à moyenne et longue portée, pêche, cabotage et navigation au long-cours, qui se développent dans des proportions plus importantes dans les ports voisins de Boulogne-sur-Mer et Dunkerque. Mais Calais demeure, à la différence d’autres ports, indispensable au système des échanges européens en tant que « ville-pont » et à la défense nationale comme place de guerre de premier ordre. Ces caractères très particuliers expliquent que l’industrialisation qui transforme Saint-Pierre en grand centre textile sous le Second Empire ne soit pas parvenue à enrayer le développement des infrastructures du port avec les grands travaux du Plan Freycinet. Ils justifient en tous cas la longue résistance de « Calais Nord » à entrer dans une nouvelle agglomération. La réunion des deux communes en 1885 consacre l’équation calaisienne qui semble tenir en ces termes : une ville industrielle anglaise contiguë à un port de passage d’envergure européenne, mais sans armateurs et sans activité halieutique notable.

    Description: Le charme indiscret est une histoire éternelle, remplie de sentiments universels – amitié, amour, joie, gravité, désespoir, méfiance – … et de sexe. Le récit commence le jour même de la proclamation du Traité de Westphalie (1648), qui met un terme à la Guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans entre le Roi d’Espagne et les États de Hollande. Dans l’euphorie des festivités, Jan Schuermans, intelligent et sémillant curé d’Ename, paisible village de Flandre, faisant fi de la pruderie de son époque, se laisse aller à coucher avec une jeune femme. Les circonstances sont floues. S’agit-il de séduction ou de viol ? Quoi qu’il en soit, un enfant naît presque huit mois plus tard et meurt quelques jours après. Ce décès n’empêche pas la machine judiciaire ecclésiastique de s’acharner à l’enquête. Poursuivi, Jan Schuermans se réfugie à L’Écluse (Sluis), ville devenue hollandaise en vertu du Traité. Or, voici qu’on découvre d’autres scandales impliquant une moniale et des femmes du village. Condamné et chassé de son village, notre curé se retrouve en fâcheuse posture à Dunkerque, juste au moment de la Bataille des Dunes, repart sur les routes de l’exil et finit ses jours dans les parages de Furnes. Toute sa vie n’est qu’une longue succession d’ambitions frustrées, d’humiliations profondes et de poursuites acharnées. L’auteur excelle à brosser cette tragique « petite histoire » personnelle sur fond d’Histoire avec un grand H. Il évoque d’une part le curé et sa clique d’amis et amies, de l’autre les grands événements de ce dix-septième siècle, dont le dépeçage de la Flandre, disputée entre l’Espagne, la France et les Provinces-Unies. L’auteur exploite un éventail de documents étonnamment riche et varié pour retracer les faits certes mais avant tout pour pénétrer la psychologie des personnages. Il dénonce en même temps la mesquinerie de la Contre-Réforme avec son cortège de haines et de suspicions. Lancinantes, ces paroles de Jan Schuermans : « Je ne voulais pas de quelque chose de vivant ».

    Description: En Asie, la genèse des sociétés moderne s’effectue dans une crise permanente. Les transformations ont été introduites ou accélérées de façon plus ou moins forcée, par les états qui avaient fait des pays asiatiques leurs colonies ou les avaient placé dans leurs sphères d’influence économique, politique et culturelle. La soumission des peuples et de leur gouvernement a-t-elle jamais été réelle ? Elle n’a été toujours obtenue qu’à travers des guerres de conquête ; au-delà de celles-ci, les résistances, qu’elles aient été passives ou actives, n’ont pas cessé. La révolte est le réflexe primordial des peuples atteints dans leur indépendance mais plus encore dans l’intégrité de leur être culturel. C’est donc au plus profond de celui-ci que ces peuples puisent leurs références mobilisatrices, à la fois vigoureuses et vulnérables. Ces mythologies souffrent-elles de leur archaïsme ou davantage de ne pas avoir atteint l’universalité des doctrines et des méthodes impérialistes ? Apparemment les révoltes sont vouées à la défaite et, simultanément ou successivement, les réformes sont des tentatives d’éviter le retour des rébellions en réajustant partiellement les politiques aux revendications des groupes sociaux. Est-ce parce que les réformes n’atteignent jamais l’intégralité et la radicalité qu’elles échouent ou du moins perdent de leur efficacité? Les réformes manquées et les révoltes brisées inspirent les projets et les volontés révolutionnaires. La révolution vise au renversement d’une situation de fait mais est-ce sa seule radicalité qui lui insuffle sa force principale ? N’est-ce pas plutôt que les doctrines dont les révolutions s’inspirent : le nationalisme, le panasiatisme, l’islam, le communisme, ont en commum le dépassement des petites patries, des ethnies, des religions naturelles et des sectes. Grâce à elles, la révolution atteint la dimension universelle qui lui permet d’affronter l’impérialisme à armes égales ou presque. La réappropriation de l’indépendance nationale est accompagnée par le dessein de modernisation qui l’apparente à l’impérialisme mais lui permet de se poser en rival et en successeur légitime de ce dernier. C’est pourquoi la révolution, à son tour, engendre des structures qui ne feront pas nécessairement l’unanimité ; la révolte, la réforme et peut-être la révolution ou la contre-révolution existent, au moins virtuellement, dans la société révolutionnée. L’Asie du sud-est est une aire géographique, culturelle et politique beaucoup trop vaste pour que ce volume ait la prétention de la "couvrir". Les travaux rassemblés ici sont une première tentative d’exposer des études de cas sans prétention de théoriser. S’ils en appellent d’autres, ce livre aura prouvé son intérêt.

    Description: La démographie historique est à la mode dans les Université, françaises et il ne s’agit point d’un engouement passager Tenter de bâtir, pur plusieurs approches, une histoire sociale de la vie et de la mort dans ce Nord qui, au xixe siècle est d’une importance capitale pour l’économie européenne, n’est-ce point une lâche passionnante et scientifiquement indispensable ? Marcel Gillet, qui enseigne l’Histoire contemporaine a l’Université de Lille depuis 1954, présente ici en vue de ce grand dessein les premiers travaux de six jeunes historiens devenus depuis Agrégés de l’Université. Après une analyse par Marie-Pascale Buriez-Duez, des principales séries relatives à l’évolution démographique du Nord au xixe siècle, Monique et Charles Engrand étudient les effets meurtriers à Lille de l’épidémie de choléra de 1832 par les craintes qu’elle déchaîne, par les tensions qu’elle fait naître, l’épidémie met en lumière des données essentielles et en particulier la situation habituelle des milieux populaires , elle révèle aussi les antagonismes, les comportements et les mentalités des différents groupes qu’elle atteint ou menace. Aline l.esaégc-Dugied, par l’étude de la mortalité infantile, aborde par un autre biais cette grande caractéristique du xixe siècle, l’inégalité sociale devant la mort et donc la quantité de vie. On mesure combien l’abaissement du taux de mortalité infantile a été difficile et tardif. Pour sa part, Claude Hélène Dewaepenaere souligne que l’existence dans le Nord d’un taux de naissances illégitimes supérieur au taux moyen français peut être autant considérée comme la traduction du refus plus ou moins avoué des normes sociales ou religieuses habituellement acceptées que comme une situation imposée par des circonstances extérieures industrialisation, immigration étrangère par exemple. Enfin, Noëlle Dombrowski-Kéerle, en étudiant l’évolution du taux de divortialité dans le Nord propose une périodisation cl une interprétation de la façon dont les divorces ont progresse et ont été plus ou moins acceptés de 1884 à 1914.

L’angle choisi permet de montrer que la construction de l’Europe moderne ne fut pas forcément « technocratique », mais que, comme tout projet singulier, elle est le résultat de tâtonnements, d’hésitations, de conflits souvent aujourd’hui oubliés, et aussi d’un élan réel.

Parce qu’il était conscient du caractère exceptionnel de cet itinéraire, J.-B. Pruvot entreprit d’en retracer les étapes dans une Histoire de ma vie racontée à mes enfants. Il en évoque les moments importants, sa rencontre déterminante, à l’âge de l’adolescence, avec des prédicateurs évangélistes baptistes, dont le message le bouleverse, son ardent désir de prêcher un jour la « parole de Dieu », sa formation auprès de pasteurs américains à Douai, et enfin sa consécration comme pasteur baptiste en 1840, puis comme pasteur de l’église réformée de Verdun. Au-delà de ce témoignage personnel, qui s’étend sur toute une vie, car J.-B. Pruvot tint un journal jusqu’à sa mort en 1878, se profile toute une société en grande partie disparue, celle des petites gens des villages du Cambrésis, ouvriers-tisseurs, brodeurs, artisans-paysans, dans leur existence quotidienne, leurs combats contre la précarité, leurs affrontements, leurs solidarités ; on mesure le retentissement sur leurs destins des politiques qui se décident si loin d’eux : sous l’Empire le cauchemar du « tirage au sort » pour l’armée, les crises économiques, les guerres. De ce texte riche en notations concrètes, en anecdotes pittoresques, émane le sentiment d’une authenticité émouvante et savoureuse.

Ils abondent en informations sur une société où s’entremêlent savoir universitaire et soucis de carrière, débats politiques, intellectuels et artistiques, des années 1870 à 1914. Après Lille, Templeuve et le Pévèle, revit le Paris des années 1880, celui des petites revues et des cabarets montmartrois vus par un amateur d’art et de littérature. Socialiste et marxiste, Charles Bonnier est également wagnérien enthousiaste. Il voyage en Allemagne et rêve de s’y établir. À Londres, Oxford et Liverpool, il continue à fréquenter aussi bien les milieux artistiques et littéraires qu’à militer en faveur du Parti ouvrier français et de l’Internationale. Marx et Mallarmé, Wagner et Manet : l’effervescence intellectuelle – et les drames – d’une époque troublée sont évoqués ici avec simplicité, humour et mélancolie.

    Description: Maître d’école et clerc paroissial de Silly-en-Multien, village de l’ancien diocèse de Meaux, présentement Silly-le-long dans l’Oise, Pierre Louis Nicolas Delahaye (1745-1805) a laissé un passionnant journal couvrant la période 1771-1792. L’« état des baptêmes, mariages et sépultures de la paroisse », agrémenté d’un livre de comptes, devenu au fil des années une véritable chronique de la vie de la communauté, offre une grande richesse documentaire sur la démographie, l’économie, la société, la vie religieuse, la culture matérielle et le quotidien d’une paroisse rurale en pays de grande culture au nord de Paris. L’atonie politique de l’Ancien Régime finissant, marqué par la succession monotone des jours et des saisons, fut interrompue par l’irruption des événements révolutionnaires, dont l’auteur, observateur sagace, témoin privilégié et acteur local, nous propose un récit très vivant, témoignant de la réception de la Révolution au village. Le journal révèle aussi le cheminement d’un personnage attachant, enraciné dans son siècle d’ombres et de Lumières, l’homme privé dans son environnement familial, professionnel et social, comme l’homme public, chrétien « patriote », confronté à la plus formidable accélération du « temps court » de notre histoire.

    Description: La Faculté des Lettres de Lille participe activement à la rénovation des études supérieures entreprises par les dirigeants de la Troisième République après 1880. Bien intégrée dans un véritable quartier latin lillois, elle connaît un développement important entre 1887 et 1914. La formation d’étudiants plus nombreux et l’accentuation de la recherche originale deviennent les deux missions fondamentales de l’institution qui n’en oublie pas pour autant la formation d’un citoyen actif et responsable. La première guerre mondiale vient compromettre sérieusement l’essor engagé. Au milieu des pires difficultés, une vie universitaire minimale réussit à se maintenir dans une ville saignée à blanc par l’occupant. De 1919 à 1939, la Faculté tente de retrouver l’esprit de novation qui l’animait avant-guerre mais une partie du dynamisme semble perdu. On reproduit surtout les structures anciennes même si l’institution connaît ensuite un nouvel essor de ses effectifs étudiants et enseignants. La seconde guerre mondiale, une nouvelle fois, vient briser l’élan. La Faculté doit alors vivre à l’heure allemande mais refuse de se compromettre. Sans entrer dans la résistance active, la plupart de ses membres refusent l’idée de collaboration et affirment, par leur travail, la survie de la culture française. En 1945, après les joies de la libération, une nouvelle reconstruction s’impose cependant.

Cette histoire prend en compte la diversité des composantes de la Catho, facultés, hôpitaux, instituts, écoles, centres de recherche et aussi de ses acteurs, fondateurs, autorités rectorales, administrateurs, enseignants, étudiants… en même temps que le souci de l’unité d’une institution, considérée comme un des lieux privilégiés de la confrontation de la foi et de la raison. Modèle, symbole ou repoussoir, l’affaire Dreyfus se voit réinterprétée et reconstruite tout au long du siècle, d’abord par les hommes qui l’ont vécue puis par les générations suivantes ; objet d’histoire, certes, mais aussi enjeu de mémoire, référence morale, idéologique et opérateur politique, l’Affaire apparaît bien, ainsi que le pressentait Péguy, comme un véritable « revenant ».

À la fois subtile université auprès de la jeunesse normalienne, refuge aristocratique réservé longtemps aux proches d’André Gide et de la NRF, cellule collective de réflexions consacrées à l’avenir de la SDN ou de l’école par des publicistes et des hommes politiques, les Décades, loin de tourner le dos au monde, tentèrent de le déchiffrer, guidées le plus souvent par la boussole du riche passé humaniste européen et de ses vertus de tolérance et d’esprit critique. Au carrefour de quelques-uns des dialogues essentiels où se nouait la question des relations catholiques et non-catholiques, entre Allemands et Français, entre Occident et Orient, Pontigny fut une des rares institutions intellectuelles médiatrices dans une époque traversée de conflits. Peut-être parce qu’en France, depuis Montaigne, le culte de la littérature, si bien organisé par les Décades, eut pour fonction non négligeable d’apaiser les esprits et d’exprimer le meilleur de la civilisation.

    Description: De 1568, année de son mariage à l’âge de 24 ans, jusqu’à son décès en 1626, soit 57 années durant sans la moindre interruption, le maître-charpentier rémois Jehan Pussot tient un journalier, d’abord pour lui-même et son entourage immédiat, puis dans l’espoir avoué d’instruire les générations futures. Son écriture, simple et directe, pudique et parfois ironique, mais jamais dénuée de bon sens, se densifie au fil des ans pour refléter l’élargissement constant des centres d’intérêt de notre artisan. Ainsi à la chronique initiale des événements familiaux et des conjonctures saisonnières, Pussot ajoute très tôt l’observation du cortège sans fin des troubles politico-religieux qui frappent la France et le Pays Rémois au dernier tiers du xvie siècle. À la compassion pour ses contemporains, à l’occasion des tensions ligueuses particulièrement vives dans une cité toute acquise aux Guise, succède le soulagement apporté par la pacification générale de 1598. Dès lors, l’homme de métier et possesseur de vignes goûte les bienfaits de la gestion prospère des affaires, le fervent catholique se fait le témoin vigilant de la marche triomphale du catholicisme réformé, notamment de ses expériences liturgiques et musicales. Le fidèle sujet du royaume se réjouit de la réconciliation survenue entre les premiers Bourbons, la noblesse catholique et sa cité des sacres, redevenue l’ornement visible de la monarchie. Lorsque enfin les dernières années se présentent, emporté par une vague nostalgique de souvenirs personnels, il ouvre une fenêtre mémorielle passionnante sur ses vertes années.

This is shown in twelve case studies that focus on decisive moments in European and US history from 1800 until today. L’ouvrage retrace les difficultés extrêmes qu’elle a connues et surmontées depuis sa création en 1876, dans le climat des luttes religieuses de l’époque. Oppositions farouches, obstructions sournoises, indifférence, discriminations jalonnent le premier siècle de son parcours. Elle a pu se maintenir grâce à la générosité des catholiques de la région et à la foi et l’abnégation de ses enseignants. La reconnaissance de son autonomie pédagogique en 1972 lui a permis de prendre enfin sa place dans le paysage hospitalo-universitaire français. Elle essaie d’y maintenir son originalité d’institution d’Eglise, membre d’une Université catholique, tout en s’adaptant à l’évolution du monde actuel.

    Description: Sans prétendre au monopole de l’action sociale et familiale, des parlementaires syndicalistes chrétiens, membres du M.R.P., ont apporté leur contribution à la reconstruction de la France au lendemain de la Libération : le climat d’unanimité nationale a favorisé la réalisation des grandes réformes telles que les nationalisations, la création des comités d’entreprise, l’instauration de la Sécurité sociale. Robert Prigent, Louis Beugniez, Jules Catoire, Paul Bacon ne sont pas les seuls démocrates chrétiens à prendre en charge les questions familiales et sociales, l’œuvre du M.R.P. déborde largement ce domaine mais ces quatre militants ont pesé, chacun à leur manière, sur les orientations de la politique française : Louis Beugniez a occupé la fonction stratégique de président de la Commission du travail et de la sécurité sociale de 1946 à 1951, Jules Catoire a été le bras droit social de Robert Schuman lors de la délicate période de la troisième force, Robert Prigent a incarné le combat familial des républicains populaires après la Libération, Paul Bacon est présent durant neuf années au ministère du Travail et de la Sécurité sociale de 1950 à 1962. Des portraits croisés suivis de documents permettent de comprendre l’itinéraire hors du commun de ces hommes entrés en politique pour défendre des idées, des projets, avec l’innocence naïve des nouveaux venus dans la République.

Au-delà de la simple distinction entre revendications négociables ou non, l’auteur cherche à saisir en quoi, dans quelles circonstances précises, une revendication acquiert ou non la dimension d’un enjeu de politique économique, voire de société, et donc comment évoluent les relations de travail elles-mêmes. Elle montre comment, dans les deux champs de l’affrontement professionnel, celui du marchandage, celui des enjeux sociaux, s’instaure un équivalent général, substituable à tout autre thème revendicatif : dans le champ du marchandage, ce fut longtemps le salaire, mais son remplacement par le partage du travail semble se profiler. Dans le champ des enjeux sociaux, l’apparition d’un équivalent général politique pose des problèmes plus complexes, car ils dépassent largement l’action des seuls syndicats.

    Description: Quand, en 1894, le peintre Rémy Cooghe brosse son portrait, Jules Émile Scrive est âgé de 57 ans. Il exprime une bonhomie certaine que n’altère en rien le port altier de l’honnête homme sûr de son fait. On peine cependant à imaginer là une âme inquiète où le sentiment d’une honorabilité légitime s’accommode mal des tracas du quotidien et des interrogations sur le sens de l’existence. C’est pourtant ce que disent ses carnets, rédigés d’une écriture fine et serrée sur des pages pré-datées, finement quadrillées. Treize années durant, entre 1879 et 1891, cet industriel malgré lui, héritier d’une prestigieuse dynastie de l’histoire du textile lillois, y consigne tout ce qui, à ses yeux, mérite d’être retenu, depuis les petits riens de la vie, les couleurs et les saveurs de l’ordinaire jusqu’aux considérations sur le sens du temps qui passe, les mystères de la foi ou bien encore les soucis d’un fabricant de toiles aux prises avec une conjoncture morose. En nous faisant part des infinies facettes de son existence, ce notable se déplie ainsi sans risque, à l’abri du monde, pour produire une trace qui devient récit de vie. Si l’expérience transmise ici par l’un des « Maîtres du Nord » est par essence unique, ce n’est cependant pas au point d’interdire l’accès à l’universel par le singulier. Tout lecteur fera donc son miel d’un journal personnel qui, en relevant du for privé, constitue un observatoire privilégié quand il s’agit de restituer des manières d’être, de vivre et de penser d’un représentant de la bourgeoisie industrielle des dernières décennies du xixe siècle.

    L’entreprise du duc d’Anjou aux Pays-Bas de 1580 à 1584 (2022)

    Description: Mort le 10 juin 1584 à vingt-neuf ans, François de Valois n’est souvent connu que par sa disparition car elle fit de Henri de Navarre le nouvel héritier du trône de France. Ce prince ambitieux joua pourtant un rôle politique important au cours de la période marquée par les affrontements religieux. Son action ne se limita pas seulement à la France, et on le vit intervenir à deux reprises aux Pays-Bas alors en révolte contre le roi d’Espagne. En 1580, les Etats Généraux lui envoyèrent une ambassade chargée de négocier un traité visant à le reconnaître comme nouveau souverain après la déchéance de Philippe II. Le traité de Plessis-ès-Tours fut signé le 19 septembre 1580. Le duc entra dans ses nouveaux Etats en février 1580. Mais moins d’un an plus tard, ce fut la rupture: essayant de prendre Anvers par la force, les Français en furent aussitôt chassés. La Furie française (17 janvier 1583), comme est appelé cet évènement, ne provoqua pas cependant la fin de son intervention. Jusqu’à la mort du duc, des négociations de réconciliation se poursuivirent. L’époque de cette intervention correspond à une époque charnière dans la révolte des Pays-Bas. Si désormais, la division entre provinces catholiques et protestantes était consommée, rien n’était encore joué en 1580. Quatre ans plus tard, les choses avaient changé, Alexandre Farnèse achevait la conquête de la Flandres et Anvers sentait déjà la menace peser sur elle. Ce contexte aide à expliquer la fin funeste de l’entreprise du duc d’Anjou, il lui est lié. Les causes de l’échec de François de Valois ne sont pas à chercher uniquement dans la personnalité du prince. Le personnage était complexe et il n’est pas toujours évident de suivre les motivations de son action. Malgré ses défauts, il n’est pas seul responsable de son insuccès. Les acteurs des évènements (Etats généraux, entourage du duc, roi de France, roi d’Espagne...) sont nombreux et, sciemment ou non, ils prennent tous une part dans le déroulement des évènements. Tel est le sujet de cet ouvrage. Mais il est aussi une illustration de la politique française à l’égard de l’Espagne, toujours prête à agir contre le puissant voisin, reculant cependant aussitôt que celui-ci se montre menaçant.

À partir de septembre 1944, cette « poche », couvrant toute l’agglomération dunkerquoise, érigée en « forteresse » par les Allemands et commandée par un nazi halluciné, devint un « front oublié » où la guerre joua les prolongations jusqu’au 9 mai 1945. Soixante ans plus tard, tandis que s’effectue le passage de la mémoire à l’Histoire, des documents et témoignages inédits ressurgissent, offrant de nouveaux éclairages sur cet ultime épisode de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, permettant également une lecture croisée avec les publications existantes, en particulier les plus récentes. La parole est ainsi donnée aux témoins, dont deux prêtres atypiques, qui décrivent avec une extrême précision les conditions de l’enfermement, la vie quotidienne des populations civiles ayant refusé d’évacuer et les relations occupants-occupés. Ce corpus est complété par des documents d’origine militaire qui relatent la conduite des opérations, les forces en présence, la nature des combats et l’environnement de ce siège qui retarda la renaissance de la cité de Jean Bart et de son port.

    Description: Cette université de la Contre-Réforme, fondée en 1562, fut marquée par l’influence jésuite dès 1567. Les bénédictins y fondèrent également deux collèges. Le xviie siècle, à Douai, fut marqué par de grandes turbulences. Dès 1640, la guerre ravagea le pays, jusqu’à la conquête française en 1667. Louis xiv voulut restaurer l’université, mais très vite, il se heurta à ses résistances dans l’affaire du gallicanisme (1682). Puis, dans la querelle janséniste, la fameuse « fourberie de Douai » permit au pouvoir royal d’éloigner les maîtres proches d’Antoine Arnauld. Le xviiie s’ouvrit sur une victoire des jésuites : le roi leur confiait à perpétuité, dès 1705, la chaire royale de mathématiques fondée pour eux par le gouverneur de Douai. Les jésuites entraient ainsi dans le conseil de l’université, bientôt suivis par les bénédictins à la fin des années 20. Ainsi les réguliers partageaient le pouvoir avec les séculiers et les autorités municipales. Cependant, dès 1749, un nouveau règlement plaçait l’université sous la férule du parlement de Flandres. Puis, en 1755, le gouverneur des Pays-Bas autrichiens, Charles de Lorraine, interdisait à ses sujets d’aller étudier et même enseigner à Douai. L’université était ainsi réduite à sa dimension nationale. En 1 764, après deux ans de résistance, le Parlement de Flandres se résigna à expulser les jésuites, plaçant ainsi une large partie de l’université sous la coupe des évêques et du pouvoir séculier. Tel fut le destin de cette école importante, qui comptait plus de 1 000 étudiants, et qui fut en tous points très fidèle au Saint-siège. La tradition douaisienne fut surtout mathématique et théologique. Université pauvre en prébendes comme en pensions, Douai n’eut pas l’éclat de nombre d’universités soutenues par le pouvoir, mais elle sut rester libre, face au roi, face à l’épiscopat. Elle se voua surtout à la défense de l’orthodoxie face au jansénisme

    Description: Vrai journal, tenu par un vrai curé de campagne, ce document nous vient d’un village situé sur la frontière belge, dans l’ancien Tournésis, Rumegies (Nord, arrondissement de Valenciennes, commune de Saint-Amand-les-Eaux). Là, vécut, au tournant des xviie et xviiie siècles, le curé Alexandre Dubois, qui dirigea sa paroisse pendant 53 ans (1686-1739), partageant en tout les joies et les épreuves de son troupeau, dans une région où des guerres atroces achevaient de fixer les limites de la France. Dans le Journal qu’il tint pendant environ 25 ans, on voit revivre avec une extrême précision un de ces petits groupes humains qui échappent généralement aux prises de la science et qui pourtant constituent la substance même du passé. On lie connaissance avec un prêtre droit, rigide même et pourtant plein de passions et de préjugés. On découvre dans un cadre restreint les contrecoups parfois tragiques des malheurs et des controverses de ce temps. Le lecteur ne pourra plus oublier certains cris de douleur devant des excès de misère : « On était las d’être au monde » (1694) ou « Le Jugement dernier sera-t-il plus effroyable ? » (1709). Aux historiens d’utiliser cette riche matière. Ce document saisissant méritait une nouvelle édition, les deux premières qui datent de 1965 (Paris, Le Cerf) et 1997 aux Presses Universitaires du Septentrion étant tout à fait épuisées.

    Description: En 1430, la fille du roi de Portugal épouse, à l’âge de 32 ans, le puissant duc de Bourgogne, Philippe le Bon. Jusqu’à sa mort en 1471, elle exerça le pouvoir dans des domaines très divers, et occupe à ce titre une place singulière dans l’histoire des princesses du xve siècle. L’auteur révèle son rôle, laissé dans l’ombre par les chroniqueurs, en ayant recours à des sources d’archives étendues, principalement des lettres et des documents financiers. Ainsi apparaît une femme qui, sans rien négliger de ses devoirs d’épouse et de mère, sut gouverner en l’absence de son mari, diriger les finances, négocier des traités et soutenir la réforme des ordres religieux. Isabelle de Portugal eut un grand ascendant sur son mari et son fils, ainsi que sur les jeunes parents, bourguignons et portugais, entretenus à la cour. Ses remarquables aptitudes financières ressortent de l’étude de la composition et de la gestion de ses revenus, notamment les ressources de ses domaines situés aux Pays-Bas et en Bourgogne. L’ouvrage comprend une étude détaillée de l’hôtel, domesticité composite, réseau de protégés et de familiers qui vivent dans la dépendance de la duchesse et partagent sa vie itinérante. L’hôtel fut dissous en 1456, peu avant qu’Isabelle ne se retire au château de la Motte-au-Bois dans la forêt de Nieppe. Avant cette date, animée d’une conscience aiguë du prestige de la principauté bourguignonne, la duchesse fut associée au gouvernement par son mari. Par délégation de pouvoir, elle en assura plusieurs fois l’entière responsabilité et mena d’importantes négociations diplomatiques avec l’Angleterre et la France. En 1457, elle quitte la cour sans être veuve, démarche dont l’originalité est soulignée, et mobilise alors son énergie et son pouvoir en faveur de l’action charitable et des courants religieux nouveaux du xve siècle, tout en conservant une grande influence sur son fils Charles le Téméraire.

    Description: Le nom de Dunkerque est indissociablement lié à celui de Jean Bart, souvent baptisé roi des corsaires ; or Jean Bart a fait l’essentiel de sa carrière au service du roi. On situe généralement l’apogée de la guerre de course pendant la guerre de Succession d’Espagne, associant Saint-Pol et Forbin à cette réussite dunkerquoise. Tous deux étaient officiers du roi mais pratiquèrent une stratégie dont le succès repose sur la création par Vauban de l’arsenal de Dunkerque. Il faut donc clarifier les rapports complexes entre les « corsaires particuliers » et les vaisseaux du roi. Tous attaquaient le commerce ennemi, le plus souvent ensemble, mais le danger et la gloire du combat revenaient le plus souvent aux navires du roi. Cependant Vauban n’a pas tout fait. De nouvelles recherches et la publication de thèses récentes amènent à redécouvrir Dunkerque « l’Espagnole », place essentielle de l’Espagne dans sa lutte contre les Provinces-Unies en révolte. De Philippe II à Philippe IV, l’Espagne définit une législation et une stratégie corsaire qui seront reprises par les autres nations européennes. L’amirauté de Dunkerque et le Conseil des Prises de Bruxelles encouragèrent les Dunkerquois dont les résultats furent étonnants. La défaite de l’invincible Armada en 1588 et celle de l’amiral Oquendo aux Dunes en 1639 ont fait oublier que les galions du roi d’Espagne ou des Archiducs basés à Dunkerque, associés aux corsaires du port ont capturé jusqu’à 280 navires par an, soit des résultats largement équivalents à ceux obtenus sous Louis XIV. Les meilleurs corsaires devinrent amiraux espagnols. La clé de ce succès reposa sur l’association entre navires du roi et particuliers. Cette stratégie, codifiée en 1637 par Jacques Colaert, corsaire devenu Amiral de la flotte de Flandre, fut reprise par Vauban et les Pontchartrain. Face à cette puissance dunkerquoise, Boulogne et Calais firent leurs premières armes de cités corsaires mais l’État ne réalisa pas les infrastructures portuaires indispensables. Une course encore largement méconnue exista cependant, qui annonçait les succès de la Révolution et de l’Empire. Proposer une relecture du rôle des corsaires du Littoral en s’appuyant sur les recherches les plus récentes, tel est l’objet de ce livre.

    Description: L’abbaye bénédictine d’Anchin, née d’un groupement d’ermites, est fondée en 1079 avec le concours de l’évêque de Cambrai Gérard II. Son spectaculaire essor s’affirme avec l’abbatiat d’Alvise (1111-1131). Le xiie siècle est un véritable âge d’or. Au siècle suivant, l’abbaye vit encore sur sa splendeur mais n’échappe pas aux difficultés à partir des années 1270. Pour écrire ce livre, il a fallu interroger une documentation considérable. Le nécrologe et le coutumier inédits ont permis de faire revivre ce monastère dans ses membres comme dans sa pratique. Le cadre monumental grandiose, aujourd’hui disparu, l’important réseau de curtes et de paroisses, les trois prieurés attestent de l’indiscutable puissance de l’abbaye. Le magistère spirituel exercé auprès de nombreux monastères et le vaste réseau de confraternités manifestent le dynamisme d’Anchin, insérée dans la société de son temps par de considérables possessions foncières et des dîmes. La position de l’abbaye sur la Scarpe, à la frontière entre Flandre et Hainaut, et l’enjeu qu’elle constitue dans la progression capétienne définissent la spécificité de ses rapports avec les puissants. Pendant deux siècles et demi, malgré des vicissitudes et en dépit de la densité monastique de la région, l’omniprésence des moines d’Anchin illustre la place éminente tenue dans un espace qui dépasse de beaucoup le cadre d’origine.

    Description: En général l’agriculture stagna dans la médiocrité jusque vers 1850. Dans le Nord au contraire le Moyen Age vit naître l’agriculture flamande. Ce fut une polyculture aux assolements complexes faisant une place de plus en plus grande à l’avoine (dès l’an Mil), aux fourrages (vers 1150), et à des plantes jusque-là confinées dans les courtils, textiles, tinctoriales et oléagineuses (vers 1400). Ce fut aussi une agriculture intensive avec des chevaux de plus en plus puissants et bien harnachés, avec la suppression progressive des jachères, de nombreux labours, le bêchage parfois, beaucoup de fumiers et des rendements somptueux, tant à la surface qu’à la semence. Ce fut enfin une culture spéculative, ouverte sur le commerce, toujours à l’affût du progrès, dans un climat capitaliste et dans la plus totale liberté. Les initiateurs en furent les petits paysans, car l’agriculture flamande ne fut que l’extension aux pleins champs de la culture des courtils.

    Description: Créé en 1945 par l’armée américaine sous l’égide du général Eisenhower, cet organe de presse officiel annonçait ouvertement aux lecteurs sa mission de rééducation de la population allemande en zone d’occupation américaine. Rééduquer signifiait dénazifier. Et les Américains dotèrent en conséquence leur journal de moyens importants, mais imposèrent aussi certaines exigences, d’où certaines périodes de crise. Or, les Allemands gardent le souvenir d’un grand journal, comparable à « Die Zeit » (R.F.A.) ou au journal « Le Monde » en France. Les intellectuels allemands soulignent la qualité inégalée de ses pages culturelles grâce à la contribution des plus grands écrivains du monde entier, d’André Malraux et Paul Claudel à Hermann Hesse et Thomas ou Heinrich Mann. Mais entre information et propagande, la tâche des différents rédacteurs en chef fut souvent délicate : l’information prima toutefois. Grâce à la présence de journalistes de renom ou d’écrivains célèbres, tels H. Habe, S. Heym, E. Kästner ou H. Wallemberg,le journal connut un réel succès jusqu’en 1948 et fit ainsi date dans l’Histoire de la presse allemande, professant une éthique journalistique et respectant le code de déontologie du journalisme objectif. Les deux premiers rédacteurs en chef réussirent à préserver un équilibre entre journal américain et journal allemand : tout en faisant l’apologie de la démocratie américaine, ils permirent à l’esprit allemand de renaître en mettant en valeur la «meilleure Allemagne». Il servit de forum à K. Schumacher et L. Erhard et fit aussi office d’école de journalisme, une école dont sortirent de nombreuses personnalités de la R.F.A, E. Bahr, P. Boenisch, H. Hamm-Brücher, R. Lembke ou F. Luft.

    Description: Rarement Journal fut aussi riche que celui tenu par Wilhelm von Wolzogen pendant ses séjours à Paris entre 1788 et 1793. Le beau-frère du grand Schiller, arrivé chez nous comme modeste voyageur et « stagiaire » en architecture, plus tard chargé d’affaires du duc de Wurtemberg, montre dans ses carnets une curiosité multiple et inlassable. « Tout y sera pêle-mêle », avoue-t-il, « mais au moins rien ne se perdra ». Si pareil foisonnement imposait quelques coupures, la présente version française n’en conserve pas moins l’intégralité du Journal politique de 1793 et de la Correspondance diplomatique. Il aura fallu attendre le bicentenaire de la Révolution en 1989 pour que cette masse d’informations qui dormaient dans des archives familiales soit enfin révélée au public allemand pour la période de 1788 à 1789. Le public français, quant à lui, disposera donc d’une traduction élargie qui couvre la période allant de 1788 à 1793 (y compris la précieuse correspondance diplomatique publiée en dossier annexe). Les propos souvent gallophobes et les convictions anti-révolutionnaires du baron de Wolzogen, loin d’atténuer la portée de son témoignage, ne lui prêtent que plus de vigueur. L’ensemble constitue un document historique et humain de premier ordre, désormais incontournable pour la connaissance de cette époque.

    Description: En 1989, la chute du mur a surpris les esprits à l’Ouest, plus encore qu’à l’Est. Depuis cet événement, on essaie de comprendre comment et pourquoi un État qui fêtait son quarantième anniversaire, qui se croyait protégé par un mur auquel Erich Honecker prédisait une longue existence, s’est effondré aussi rapidement. Certes, la débâcle économique qui menaçait le pays est un facteur d’explication incontestable et déterminant. Mais, s’il peut sembler encore prématuré de vouloir dresser des bilans définitifs et donner une explication complète de l’évolution de la RDA, on peut aujourd’hui repérer d’utiles jalons quant au rôle des intellectuels dans le naufrage d’une idéologie qui avait imposé ses marques à toute une partie du monde. Cet ouvrage présente une première approche du processus d’unification allemande, vue sous l’angle de l’action des intellectuels à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur de la RDA et organisée autour de grands thèmes (concepts, théorie littéraire, acteurs, censure et répression, évolution de la contestation en RDA à partir des années 1980, intellectuels et unification). La période traitée s’étend de 1945 à 1990, avec quelques ouvertures sur les lendemains de l’unification allemande. L’un des aspects originaux de cette étude est de mettre l’accent sur le rôle des intellectuels européens de part et d’autre du Mur, leur relation au pouvoir politique, leur impact dans la lutte contre le pouvoir en RDA. L’ouvrage associe une présentation éclairante de faits connus aux résultats nouveaux d’une recherche menée dans les archives du « Congrès pour la liberté de la culture » aux États-Unis.

It argues that the changes that took place in the years around 1800 were enabled by different types of continuities across Europe and in the Americas. With historians of modernity tending to emphasise the rise of the new, scholarship has leaned towards an assumption that existing modes of action, thought and practice simply became extinct, irrelevant or at least subordinate to new modes. In contrast, this collection examines continuities between early modern and modern political cultures and organization in Europe and the Americas. Shifting the focus from political modernization, the authors examine the continued relevance of older, often local, practices in (post)revolutionary politics. By doing so, they aim to highlight the role of local political traditions and practices in forging and enabling political change. The book argues that while political change was in fact at the centre of both the old and new polities that emerged in the Age of Revolutions, it coexisted with, and was indeed enabled by, continuities at other levels.

Depuis la fin du xixe siècle, les États-Unis sont perçus par les Français comme la terre de la modernité et il est devenu presque banal d’aller y observer les scènes de la vie future. Mais de la fin de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale au milieu des années 1950, les circonstances vont donner au modèle américain une importance sans précédent. Comment arracher la France, ruinée par la guerre, à la pauvreté et au déclin menaçant sinon en s’inspirant de l’exemple des États-Unis ? Plus que jamais, il faut donc imiter l’Amérique, d’autant que la prospérité de la nouvelle Terre promise s’accompagne d’une liberté qui, pour n’être pas dépourvue de failles, n’en contraste pas moins avec le totalitarisme stalinien. Mais l’admiration pour les États-Unis n’est pas universelle et l’antiaméricanisme du puissant parti communiste va déboucher, dans le contexte de la guerre froide, sur une condamnation globale des États-Unis et de leur civilisation.

    Description: This open access book offers an unprecedented analysis of child welfare schemes, situating them in the wider context of post-war policy debates about the care of children. Between 1945 and 1970, an estimated 3,500 children were sent from Britain to Australia, unaccompanied by their parents, through child migration schemes funded by the Australian and British Governments and delivered by churches, religious orders and charities. Functioning in a wider history of the migration of unaccompanied children to overseas British colonies, the post-war schemes to Australia have become the focus of public attention through a series of public reports in Britain and Australia that have documented the harm they caused to many child migrants. Whilst addressing the wide range of organisations involved, the book focuses particularly on knowledge, assumptions and decisions within UK Government Departments and asks why these schemes continued to operate in the post-war period despite often failing to adhere to standards of child-care set out in the influential 1946 Curtis Report. Some factors – such as the tensions between British policy on child-care and assisted migration – are unique to these schemes. However, the book also examines other factors such as complex government systems, fragmented lines of departmental responsibility and civil service cultures that may contribute to the failure of vulnerable people across a much wider range of policy contexts.

This has produced new kinds of created works which can be viewed, explored, and interacted with, either as an installation or via a virtual environment such as the Internet. These processes generate new dimensions of understanding and experience for both the artist and the public’s relationships with the works that are produced. This has raised a variety of interdisciplinary opportunities and issues, and these are examined. The symbiotic relationship between artistic works and the cultural context in which they are produced is reviewed. Technology can provide continuity by making traditional methods and techniques more efficient and effective. It can also provide discontinuity by opening up new perspectives and paradigms. This can generate new ideas, and produce a greater understanding of artistic processes and how they are implemented in practice. Tools have been used from the earliest times to create and modify artistic works. For example, naturally occurring pigments have been used for cave paintings. What has been created provides insight into the cultural context and social environment at the time of creation. There is an interplay between the goal of the creator, the selection and use of appropriate tools, and the materials and representations chosen. Technology, Design and the Arts - Opportunities and Challenges is relevant for artists and technologists and those engaged in interdisciplinary research and development at the boundaries between these disciplines.

    Description: This book provides the most in-depth study of capital punishment in Scotland between the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth century to date. Based upon an extensive gathering and analysis of previously untapped resources, it takes the reader on a journey from the courtrooms of Scotland to the theatre of the gallows. It introduces them to several of the malefactors who faced the hangman’s noose and explores the traditional hallmarks of the spectacle of the scaffold. It demonstrates that the period between 1740 and 1834 was one of discussion, debate and fundamental change in the use of the death sentence and how it was staged in practice. In addition, the study provides an innovative investigation of the post-mortem punishment of the criminal corpse. It offers the reader an insight into the scene at the foot of the gibbets from which criminal bodies were displayed, and around the dissection tables of Scotland’s main universities where criminal bodies were used as cadavers for anatomical demonstration. In doing so it reveals an intermediate stage in the long-term disappearance of public bodily punishment.

    Description: This open access book provides a panoramic view of the evolution of Spanish agriculture from 1900 to the present, offering a more diverse picture to the complex and multidimensional reality of agrarian production. With a clear transdisciplinary ambition, the book applies an original and innovative theoretical and methodological tool, termed Agrarian Social Metabolism, combining Social Metabolism with an agroecological perspective. This integrative analysis is especially interesting for environmental scientists and policy makers being the best way to design sustainable agroecosystems and public policies capable of moving us towards a more sustainable food system. Spanish agricultural production has experienced impressive growth during the 20th century which has allowed it to ensure the supply of food to the population and even to transform some crops into important chapters in foreign trade. However, this growth has had its negative side since it was based on the injection of large amounts of external energy, on the destruction of employment and the loss of profitability of agricultural activity. But perhaps the most serious part is the strong impact of the current industrialised agriculture model on Spanish agroecosystems, exposed to the overexploitation of hydric resources, pollution of the water by nitrates and pesticides, high erosion rates and an alarming loss of biodiversity; damage which in the immediate future will end up reducing production capacity.

The term co-creativity is used in reference to both individual methods and overarching research approaches. Supported by a series of in-depth examples, the edited collection critically reviews the potential of co-creative research praxis to nurture just and transformative processes of change. Included amongst the individual chapters are first-hand accounts of such as: militant research strategies and guerrilla narrative, decolonial participative approaches, appreciative inquiry and care-ethics, deep-mapping, photo-voice, community-arts, digital participatory mapping, creative workshops and living labs. The collection considers how, through socially inclusive forms of action and reflection, such co-creative methods can be used to stimulate alternative understandings of why and how things are, and how they could be. It provides illustrations of (and problematizes) the use of co-creative methods as overtly disruptive interventions in their own right, and as a means of enriching the transformative potential of transdisciplinary and more traditional forms of social science research inquiry. The positionality of the researcher, together with the emotional and embodied dimensions of engaged scholarship, are threads which run throughout the book. So too does the question of how to communicate sustainability science research in a meaningful way.

    Description: Acting on stage is a mode of performing an action, in the context of which the bodily aspects implicitly at work in acting reveal their own significance and power. This event can actualize a wound incarnated in human beings, because the actor acts and does not act at the same time and hence the concept of being ‘the doer’ unmasks itself as being illusionary. One could call it a kind of ‘symbolic death’ (Mueller), an ‘anthropological mutation’ (Agamben)––an event of great interest because of its highly ethical call.The book “Actors and the Art of Performance. Under Exposure” opens with a cascade of contradictory motives for becoming an actor. But, if theatre is no longer understood as a theatre of representation, then what takes place on stage is a transformation at play with truth, in which ethics are realized by the aesthetic. Insofar the book summarizes the attempt to explore and map guidelines of acting as being under the perspective of be-coming. That may sound fairly harmless in theory, but it feels anything but harmless when you experience it on your own body. For example, for being physical under exposure actors have to learn that there exists no fundamental dualism between mind and matter. Furthermore, actors are espoused to a dynamic shifting ground in the name of creativity. They have to carry the burden that the self is no sovereign identity as we generally suppose, but rather a threshold of permanent be-coming. One could call it the outstanding gift of acting. In the German language, gift means “poison”, in German ears the word has the double meaning of poison and present, thus expressing the fact that a gift is disturbing and blessing at the same time. Loaded with fear and joy as the crucial point of acting, which attacks and attracts actors and spectators most.

    Description: In this Open Access book, film scholar Rasmus Greiner develops a theoretical model for the concept of the histosphere to refer to the “sphere” of a cinematically modelled, physically experienceable historical world. His analysis of practices of modelling and perceiving, immersion and empathy, experience and remembering, appropriation and refiguration, combine approaches from film studies, such as Vivian Sobchack’s phenomenology of film experience, with historiographic theories, such as Frank R. Ankersmit’s concept of historical experience. Building on this analysis, Greiner examines the spatial and temporal organization of historical films and presents discussions of mood and atmosphere, body and memory, and genre and historical consciousness. The analysis is based around three historical films, spanning six decades, that depict 1950s Germany: Helmut Käutner’s Sky Without Stars (1955), Jutta Brückner’s Years of Hunger (1980), and Sven Bohse’s three-part TV series Ku’damm 56 (2016).

    Description: This book is a multidisciplinary work that investigates the notion of posthumous harm over time. The question what is and when is death, affects how we understand the possibility of posthumous harm and redemption. Whilst it is impossible to hurt the dead, it is possible to harm the wishes, beliefs and memories of persons that once lived. In this way, this book highlights the vulnerability of the dead, and makes connections to a historical oeuvre, to add critical value to similar concepts in history that are overlooked by most philosophers. There is a long historical view of case studies that illustrate the conceptual character of posthumous punishment; that is, dissection and gibbetting of the criminal corpse after the Murder Act (1752), and those shot at dawn during the First World War. A long historical view is also taken of posthumous harm; that is, body-snatching in the late Georgian period, and organ-snatching at Alder Hey in the 1990s.
