    Description: Town planning entails the complex task of studying the habitat in its variegated aspects, with the objective of introducing functional transformations in response to the demands of the community. Since it is an experimental discipline, however, methods of approach and elaboration can be very different. This book represents the synthesis of the degree theses produced in the Department of Town and Territorial Planning of the University of Florence between 2000 and 2004, selected with a view to achieving a significant overview of the various issues and disciplinary areas. The volume thus addresses topical questions such as the protection of the historic identity, the rethinking of the modern city, obsolete areas and urban gaps, relational processes and spaces, sustainable development and planning, and the settlements of developing countries.

    Description: Exploited for requirements of defence, navigation, transport, irrigation, and the powering of mills, water has progressively diminished in importance to the extent that the relations between the city, the territory and the water systems have now greatly deteriorated. This book proposes to retrace the nature of the relations between water and the urban landscape, interpreting the shifting of the relations through images. It also analyses the use of water in contemporary landscape design, identifying the conceptual and compositional tools proper to landscape design which can inform and guide future planning.

    Description: Over the last few years the landscape debate has taken a new turn, shifting from concerns of conservation and protection towards the search for methods of intervention and regulations that consent a development of the territory compatible with the mutation of collective requirements. This is based on a recognition of the intrinsically dynamic nature of the landscape, conceived both in its matter and in its essence as a social construct. This shift has been sanctioned by the European Landscape Convention, which includes among the objectives of landscape policy the creation of new landscapes "to satisfy the aspirations of the population involved". This book focuses on the investigation of the conditions of the context that make innovation more or less appropriate. This is assessed as a design approach (and hence no distinction will be made between design action and planning action) that addresses the "rules" dictated by what already exists. The social recognition of their value defines the "degree of freedom" of the invention. At times the rule is the very object of the project, that is the intervention is demanded precisely to conserve or valorise a landscape that is considered of exceptional value (as in the case of protected landscapes). In other cases it is a question of implementing projects with different objectives, while respecting the rules of the landscape context. Frequently the landscape does not feature a single, unequivocal and legible system of rules, but a stratification that may be incomplete, fragmentary or conflicting: the project may then attempt to knit these up, and this mechanism may trigger its added value. There are also cases in which the rule is too weak to support a revival, or is "banal", in short can be considered worth "sacrificing" to the introduction of a new system of values. Taken as a whole, the essays explore cases of landscape design, from planning to the art of the garden, identifying the appropriateness of the innovation in terms of an awareness of the rules and the intentional affirmation and expression of self. The articles contained in the book were composed specifically for the International Convention on "Innovation and Rules in Landscape Design" held in Florence on 22 and 23 November 2002, organised by the Research Doctorate in Landscape Design of the University of Florence.

La prima parte del lavoro è incentrata sugli aspetti teorici e metodologici dello studio del paesaggio agrario e sulla descrizione dei suoi elementi componenti, dei suoi processi formativi, dell'evoluzione della sua struttura. La seconda parte è un'applicazione pratica di quanto rilevato, con un'elaborazione originale delle relazioni che danno origine alle diverse tipologie di paesaggi agrari secondo le quali è oggi possibile articolare la campagna romana. In sintesi la ricerca ha voluto mettere in relazione un modello conoscitivo riferito al paesaggio agrario con un quadro territoriale specifi co ricco di situazioni paesistiche emblematiche, ponendosi l'obiettivo di saggiare la fattibilità dell'applicazione delle chiavi di lettura individuate e proposte, e di rivalutare il ruolo del paesaggio agrario all'interno dell'attuale processo di riqualifi cazione ambientale e paesistica.

    Description: L'opera affronta il tema del progetto contemporaneo di parco urbano, interpretato come spazio etico ed estetico. Etico, nel senso proprio dell'etimo, cioè conforme al luogo, ed estetico, come spazio urbano soggetto a valutazioni qualitative e ambito di produzione di esperienza estetica in un ambiente reale animato dalla presenza della natura. Tracciando un percorso critico attraverso la storia dell'arte dei giardini e dei parchi e gli orientamenti attuali dell'architettura del paesaggio in Europa, si sostiene la tesi che l'etica del fare parchi implica sempre e comunque una riflessione su principi e valori estetici. La varietas della produzione attuale viene letta attraverso alcune originali chiavi di lettura: un quadro storico dei modelli etici ed estetici, la individuazione di specie di parchi, la definizione di categorie etiche/estetiche. La parte conclusiva propone un modus operandi che assume la dimensione narrativa come indirizzo progettuale.     Description: People with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) have a particular sensory sensitivity, causing their surrounding environment to affect the quality of life significantly. It is called a “spectrum”, because there is a great variety of behaviours making it difficult to define universal and design criteria. These behaviours do however require a new dynamic and flexible approach, enabling the customization of the feedback to the project. Starting from the study of the specific needs of users, the environmental conditions and the design approaches, this research aims at providing innovative tools to support the design of “therapeutic” environments which could reduce the discomfort and stress related to the person’s enablement, in order to include them in the social community within an integrated life project, concerning “home”, applied living spaces (school, work, day centres...) and emergency conditions with respect to treatments.

    Description: The PhD thesis presented here investigates the historic landscape of the Cinque Terre through analysis of the multiform territorial iconography, descriptions of the past and the ancient cadastral records. The aim is to define a methodology (which could possibly also be extended to other contexts) for the qualitative appraisal of the landscape, where the yardstick is yielded by the abstract status conditions brought to light by parameters defined as “historic indicators”. The temporal thresholds analysed (1612, 1643, 1799, 1918-32, 1982, 1990) lead to interpretative syntheses (for example, those on Riomaggiore) aimed at the identification of rules for project initiatives shared by the local communities.
    Description: La tesi di dottorato qui presentata indaga il paesaggio storico delle Cinque Terre attraverso l'analisi della multiforme iconografi a territoriale, delle descrizioni del passato e degli antichi catasti descrittivi. Il fine è quello di mettere a punto una metodologia (estensibile eventualmente ad altri contesti) per la valutazione qualitativa del paesaggio, dove la misura è data dalle condizioni di stato astratte messe in luce da parametri detti "indicatori storici". Le soglie temporali analizzate (1612, 1643, 1799, 1918-32, 1982, 1990) conducono a sintesi interpretative (es. quelle su Riomaggiore) finalizzate all'individuazione di regole per azioni di progetto condivise dalle comunità locali.

    Description: The dissertation deals with the contemporary city soundscape and fits into the disciplinary field of sensuous urbanism, soundscape studies and emotional geography. The key term, 〈i〉soundscape〈/i〉, is to be understood as all the sounds that surround us, as a perceptual theme, that is, object of a subject's perception, in its sense of 'landscape' including the metaphorical meaning of an emotional or mnemonic emotional soundscape. The dissertation is structured in two parts: the first and second chapters define the disciplinary spheres of sensory urbanism and soundscape studies, while the third and fourth chapters explore the forms that classical sound environment analysis and planning tools take on within the aforesaid disciplinary fields. Finally, the conclusions give a methodological indication aimed at favouring the integration of soundscape studies within the town planning discipline, and propose «tender sound map» and «sound niche» operating tools to help achieve the goal of planning the contemporary city's physical and sound spaces at the same time.

    Description: A subject that is inexplicably little studied at present, or indeed not at all, is that of the quest for possible applications and feasible objectives in the energy requalification of existing buildings, existing or planned open spaces, old city centres and the monumental and diffuse cultural heritage. At the present time it is crucial that the issues, research and techniques linked to the possibilities of an aware use of energy are applied to the old city centres and the existing heritage. This must start from a knowledge and investigation of the traditional building materials and techniques, which are in themselves inherently sustainable (comprising both the ancient city and the consolidated modern city and their historic stratifications). The historic environment indeed represents an infinite cultural and environmental resource and a very high percentage of the global architectural heritage.

    Description: The aim of the research is to investigate how the set of artistic practices known as public art can create an area of co-design between landscape architecture, urban design and urban art. In recent years, art in the public space has gradually expanded from a conventional idea of monument to the idea of a sign contributing to urban regeneration: a sign building identity, a space creating relationships and relational processes. The research therefore aims to reflect and interpret the concepts that go in this direction, in the possibility of promoting their evolution that tends towards the definition of art, or rather the artistic act, not as an element of the urban scene, but as a process aimed at promoting a multidisciplinary dialogue. Art in/for/with the urban landscape can be read as a tool, as one of the possible means that can activate design processes.

The 〈i〉cityscape〈/i〉 moulded through tangible forms and values, spatialized in architectural and urban layouts, is increasingly linked to a 〈i〉mindscape〈/i〉 project which originates from intangible forms and values linked to interests, events, invention and enhancement of resources in continuous movement. The 〈i〉cityscape〈/i〉 advanced in this sense can but be planned together with a 〈i〉mindscape〈/i〉 that is heterogeneous and complex and increasingly based on the experience that the place can offer. In it event and permanency blend to construct a personalized urban tale that puts the principle of utility alongside that of the desire to become a geographical-spatial, but also existential, landscape. This book reflects on the dynamics of the transformations caused by new forms of production and exchange in order to note down topics to apply to town planning.

    Description: This text collects the revisions of some of the most significant degree theses written from 2011 to 2015 in the bachelor degree in City, territory and landscape planning and in the Master's degree in City and territory planning and design of University of Florence, Empoli campus. The theses cover the current diversified scenery of problems within the urban planning discipline, using very different methodologies, interpretations and perspectives of analysis. The territory emerging as the protagonist of the young authors' narratives is a complex and multi-layered object; it is constituted by things and relationships, set on the long times of history, aimed towards the present and projected into the future, and it continues to raise their questions, doubts, curiosities and also some fruitful answers. In summary, rather than chances for discussion on a disposable form of knowledge, this works offer chances for reflection and experimentation, and opportunities for the incremental construction of creative solutions by its authors.

These are defined as third spaces (neither public nor private) and recognized on the basis of seven characteristics.     Description: City and territory are currently experiencing a phase of development, or crisis, depending on whether they manage to form the know-how to respond to the current exponential evolution. Know-how that has to make a critical assessment of the fabric of structures, cultures and inherited layouts. Between continuity and innovation, contemporary town planning culture creates the basis for a more flexible model that can seek out new continuities by interpreting the present discontinuity, dissent, difference, decentralization and dispersion.     Description: This volume was born from a recognition of the experiences and warnings which were needed for the creation of a landscape observatory in Tuscany, and for the definition of the network and interactive methods which the observatory itself can use while aiming at its own operational effectiveness. The analysis was carried out during the formation stage of the Landscape Plan of Tuscany and during the collaboration which the Regional Authority has promoted with the Inter-University Centre of Territory Sciences. Starting from the examination of the organizational and functional models characterizing the main European and Italian experiences, in the plurality of regulatory contexts, forms of landscape planning and regulation and practices of cultural and association mobilization of the reference populations, some working hypotheses are formulated and calibrated on the Tuscan situation.

    Description: Cut-stone constructions are made of pre-hewn blocks dry assembled on top of each other. Owing to the formal complexity characteristic of these works, in order to design them it is necessary to have knowledge of the theory of lines, surfaces and their properties, as well as knowledge of the representation methods capable of rendering them on a plane surface. This knowledge set makes stereotomy the science that anticipates, in terms of theory and tools, modern descriptive geometry. These are the reasons for seeking the beginnings of descriptive geometry in stereotomy, that is, the reasons for the transformation of the mason's art of cutting stone into a bona fide science. Frézier's work fits among the last theoretical essays prior to the 〈i〉géométrie descriptive〈/i〉 of Gaspard Monge. It is a treaty on solid geometry, devoted to the shape of the bodies, their intersections and the graphical methods necessary to represent them on a plane. In it the author draws up a rigorous theory that puts in place over two centuries of knowledge and experimentation on the subject of cutting stones.

Ten years of scientific and educational work on the landscape were deserving of comment, and we have made this in the only way we know: in writing. Hence there is no celebratory intention. It is simply one of many ways of making a sort of self-analysis, of gaining a deeper insight into ourselves and expounding our experience to others, explaining what we have produced, how we did it and what the results were, with the aim of putting our experience at the disposal of those who deal with the same disciplinary areas or with analogous issues.

    Description: La ricerca a fronte della sfida ambientale, the third volume in the DOTTA series, this publication documents the third edition of the Osdotta seminar co-ordinated by the Polytechnic of Milan, held in Lecco on 12-13-14 September 2007. The acronym of the Monitoring Centre of the Doctorate in Architectural Technology (Osservatorio del Dottorato in Tecnologia dell'Architettura), Osdotta was generated by the need to create a space for cultural exchange in relation to research contents and methods pertinent to technological disciplines. An experience acknowledged as a site of scientific interconnection and networked structure, it sets itself the goal of exploring the complexity of the research on multiple scales, investigating and focusing emerging issues and studying the national training scenario so as to boost the professional level of the research. The 2007 edition of the national seminar demonstrates the consolidation of an inter-site education/training experiment of an innovative character that materialises in the rendering of the results of exchange and dialogue on a theme with a wealth of faceted values: the environment, in the form of a challenge that explores the relation with technology.

    Description: This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This book discusses urban public spaces and, more specifically, run-down, inactive micro-spaces that are barely used due to their location, dimensions, morphology or semantic characteristics. In literature, these spaces are often defined as “residual urban spaces.” A large abandoned industrial area on the outskirts of a town or a small interstitial space in a historical centre can be residual. With respect to such a broad subject matter, the book seeks to radically limit the field, concentrating on public residual spaces found in the oldest parts of cities. The book reflects on this theme and introduces a method for reading and assessment of the residuality of public spaces in historical contexts (Residuality Assessment Process) which was tested in the historical centre of Florence. It is the authors’ view that residual spaces, above all if designed according to a system logic, can go from being problems to potential activators of urban and social regeneration processes, offering a useful contribution to improve city life.

    Description: This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This research was based on the transfer of knowledge from members of the Albanian Diaspora in Italy (university students, young architects and researchers) to their home country. This unique process blazed a trail in the Albania-related studies by creating a methodology, which could be replicated not only in Albanian rural contexts, but also elsewhere. The book constitutes a structured tool for generating sustainable and socially inclusive territorial development processes in five lesser-known Albanian cultural sites. Their tangible and intangible cultural heritage was seen as a driving factor for triggering development processes aimed at improving the inhabitants’ quality of life and strengthening local identity and social networks. Through concrete proposals and strategies, the book offers scenarios and solutions capable of enhancing the potential of each village and, at the same time, counteracting the effects of land abandonment that so often characterise them.

    Description: The contribution made by Mario Ridolfi to the construction of a modern Italian identity, in its regional aspect, materialised in his Umbrian designs, starting from the watershed of 1961 which marked the voluntary exile of the architect in Marmore. Through the analysis of his architectural creations, the book reconstructs the mental itinerary pursued by Ridolfi in the elaboration of the Umbrian works, casting light on the architect's interest in the material consistency of the architectural organism, studied in the most minute detail so that the perfection of the work can render it a "living thing". In Ridolfi's work, spirit and matter, art and technology are amalgamated into a single object which always tends to the absolute. Bound up with this, in a play of continual cross-reference, is the study of the specific features of the Umbrian landscape, dominated by the figure of St. Francis of Assisi, as a fruitful and intriguing comparison to map out the contours of the research.

    Description: The protection of the environment, the protection of ecological and natural resources, the sustainable enhancement of urban and rural spaces represent unquestionable ethical paradigms and unavoidable realities which the society of the third millennium must face. Environmental protection is accompanied by wider objectives related to the fruition of territorial contexts, under a perspective of active conservation; moreover, the intervention strategies have been modified according to the enhancement of resources and contexts, as well as the development of the specific features of the territory itself. Sustainability analysis as a tool to monitor, reinterpret, develop and enhance a territory, and in particular its natural heritage: this is the main theme of this book which reports the results of a research conducted by an interdisciplinary group sharing the Life Cycle approach. The Life Cycle approach is evolving in a methodology capable of incorporating the local as well as the global dimension, the macro and meso scale together with the product scale, the social dimension as well as the environmental and economic one. So, can such an approach be appropriate and practicable in the sustainability analysis of a territory? To this question, which is specifically directed at environmental aspects, biodiversity and environmental-spatial accessibility, the book intends to give an answer both on the theoretical level and on the practical one, with the introduction of a case study dealing with the territory hosting the Regional Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli in Tuscany. The book provides an overview of the analysis phases and of the indicators supporting the analysis and documents their application at different scales in the context of the Park.
