    Seismic Risk Communication in Europe: Lessons Learned and Future Perspectives (2024)

    Description: Since the 1980s various international directives and frameworks have acknowledged the potential of risk communication to foster community empowerment. However, to achieve empowerment, communication has to be effective. When it comes to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, science communication requires the involvement of communities as a whole, promoting bottom-up strategies and proactive engagement. In this light, we conducted a scoping review of scientific publications on seismic risk communication in Europe published between 2000 and 2022. We focused on how seismic risk communication has changed in that time span, looking for targeted approaches, tools, recipients and channels. Here we provide an overview of the results obtained from the analysis of 109 selected publications, also highlighting the importance of scientific communication as a transnational problem, due to the mobility of modern society. Our study reveals that seismic risk communication in Europe is becoming increasingly proactive, focusing on a bottom-up strategy that relies on youth to build the resilience of future generations. The potential for the community empowerment has been primarily addressed with seismic risk communication during the pre-crisis phase of the disaster, when risk awareness can be effectively raised. Social media are increasingly used to provide timely and actionable information in times of crisis, to engage citizens within a two-way risk communication model, in the pre-crisis time, and to provide scientific data for post-disaster processing. The future agenda of seismic risk communication in Europe should focus on building trust with the public, moving towards a three-way model of seismic risk communication and, even more importantly, taking action to curb the spread of fake news and their negative impact on disaster management. Last but not least, more efforts should be made to link practice and theory and explicitly build seismic risk communication on theoretical models.

    Description: Bell ringing and bell chiming are presenting a valuable part of Slovenian cultural heritage, which is reflected in an extremely rich vocabulary that is part of our everyday reality and communication. The dictionary brings about 1035 expressions from the fields of amateur and professional engagement with bell ringing and bell chiming. It unveils the bells as a versatile musical instrument of cultural, ethnomusicological, artistic and also, in the case of older bells, of historical value. In addition to the modern terms, it contains some past terms, as well as many dialectal words, including the ones from vocabulary of Slovenians living in the neighboring countries. The monolingual design of the explanatory terminological dictionary is exceeded by the addition of English equivalents and the English-Slovene dictionary. This enables that also international scholars and bell experts gets acquainted with the special features of Slovenian bell ringing and bell chiming. The dictionary is intended for professionals from different fields of science, as well as for bell ringing experts, bell chimers, as well as everyone attracted by the sounds of our soundscapes. The authors of the dictionary would like to encourage new research of this kind, and especially would like that campanology gets appropriate position in the field of profession and science in Slovenia and abroad.
    Description: Zvonjenje in pritrkavanje sta dragoceni del slovenske kulturne dediščine, kar se kaže v izjemno bogatem izrazju, ki je odraz vpetosti pojmov v stvarnosti. Slovar prinaša 1035 izrazov s področij ljubiteljskega in strokovnega ukvarjanja z zvonjenjem in pritrkavanjem. Zvonove razkriva kot vsestransko glasbilo kulturne, etnomuzikološke, umetniške in v primerih, ko gre za zvonove starejše letnice, tudi zgodovinske vrednosti. Poleg sodobnega izrazja, med katerimi je veliko narečnih besed, delno prinaša pretekle izraze, sega pa tudi v slovenski zamejski prostor. Enojezičnost razlagalnega terminološkega slovarja je presežena z dodanimi angleškimi ustreznicami in z obrnjenim angleško-slovenskim slovarjem. S tem se ponuja možnost, da se s posebnostmi slovenskega zvonjenja in pritrkavanja seznanijo tudi poznavalci v mednarodnem prostoru. Slovar je namenjen strokovnjakom z vseh raznovrstnih področij, ki jih zvonjenje vsebuje, ljubiteljem zvonjenja in pritrkavanja, pritrkovalcem samim in drugim, ki jih privlačijo zvoki naših zvočnih krajin. Želeti je, da bi slovar spodbudil nove tovrstne raziskave in da bi zvonoslovje dobilo ustrezno mesto v okviru stroke in znanosti.

    Description: The monograph (Between Self-Fulfillment and Social Expectations: The Attitude of the University-Educated Towards Fertility) considers a wider social background of reproductive decisions in university-educated people stemming from the evidence about the lowest birth rates among the university-educated population. This is a sociological study despite the examination of two established approaches in studying the relationship between education and fertility within the economic theories of fertility behaviour. The monograph considers some major results of sociological, anthropological and other qualitative studies which have importantly upgraded conclusions of extensive demographic surveys on this relationship.
    Description: Monografija obravnava celovito družbeno ozadje sprejemanja reproduktivnih odločitev pri univerzitetno izobraženih saj vrsta statističnih evidenc kaže, da so rodnostne stopnje najnižje ravno med njimi. Delo sodi na področje sociologije, čeprav presoja dva najbolj uveljavljena pristopa preučevanja odnosa med izobrazbo in rodnostjo, ki izhajata iz ekonomskih teorij rodnosti.

    Description: The monograph deals with the musical practice of bell chiming, which is part of folk music tradition in Slovenia, as well as in some other European countries. Bell chiming is the rhythmic chiming of church bells, which is nowadays a fairly popular musical practice among the older and younger generations alike. The book is based on modern research and, where appropriate, comparatively approaches the material from a historical and geographical point of view. Apart from its musical analyses, which present structural and formational elements of bell-chiming tunes in detail, the book also discusses sociological questions, such as the role of bell chiming in the clerical and also in the secular context, the manner of musical transfer, the performativity of musical practice and the roles of the sexes in bell chiming. Bell chiming is placed within the broader context of European chiming. The detailed discussion of bell chiming in both Germany and Croatia refutes the old myth of bell chiming as a Slovenian national speciality.
    Description: Knjiga obravnava glasbeno prakso pritrkavanja, ki je del ljudske glasbene tradicije v Sloveniji in nekaterih evropskih državah. Gre za ritmično izvajanje na cerkvene zvonove, ki je danes izredno razširjena glasbena praksa tako med starejšimi kot mlajšimi generacijami. Knjiga je zasnovana na sodobnih raziskavah in je na primernih mestih komparativno obravnavana z zgodovinskega in geografskega stališča. Poleg glasbenoanalitičnega dela, v katerem so podrobno predstavljeni strukturni in oblikovni elementi pritrkovalskih viž, knjiga obravnava sociološka vprašanja kot so: vloga pritrkavanja v cerkvenem in posvetnem kontekstu, načini glasbenega prenosa, performativnost glasbene prakse in vloga spola pri pritrkavanju. Pritrkavanje je umeščeno v širši kontekst evropske igre na zvonove, s podrobnejšo obravnavo pritrkavanja v Nemčiji in na Hrvaškem pa je ovržen v Sloveniji že zelo dobro »zasidran« mit o pritrkavanju kot slovenski nacionalni posebnosti.

    Description: Knjiga je nastala v okviru evropskega projekta Natura 2000. V uvodnih poglavjih so opisana evropska prizadevanja za vzpostavitev ekološkega omrežja, razloženi so osnovni pojmi evropske naravovarstvene zakonodaje ter potek projekta v Sloveniji. Glavni del besedila je posvečen opisu 26 evropsko pomembnih rastlinskih vrst in predlogom za njihovo ohranitev. Opis vsake vrste vsebuje štiri poglavja (Morfološki opis in ekologija vrste, Razširjenost vrste, Predlogi varstvenih območij in Naravovarstvo). Za vsako rastlino je izdelana karto njene razširjenosti v Sloveniji, na kateri hkrati vidimo, kje so predlogi ohranitvenih območij.

    Description: The volume Historični seminar 14 ('Historical Seminar 14'), issued in the time of transformed reality of what we knew and took for granted, draws attention to the fact that the image we cultivate of ourselves and our history may sometimes be too simplified to be entirely real. At first, the volume both revises already known chapters of Church history and introduces hitherto unknown ones. Simon Malmenvall’s analysis of the characters of the noble martyrs Boris and Gleb, Jovan Vladimir, and Magnus Erlendsson shows how the stories of their martyrdom had a nation-building function. Celeste McNamara’s article on Giovanni Barbarigo introduces the unusual and less well-known topic of seventeenth-century missions. Monika Deželak Trojar analyzes in detail Johann Ludwig Schönleben’s German and Latin Lenten sermons. Aleš Maver’s article discusses why Latin disappeared so quickly from Slovenian churches after the Second Vatican Council. On the other hand, the pre-modern religious practices of nature worshippers in Slovenia are discussed by Cirila Toplak. Modern times and also more political issues are examined by Tomaž Ivešić who focuses on the increase in ethnic tensions in Yugoslavia in the early 1970s, while Aleksandar Takovski traces the historical representation of heroic figures in four former Yugoslav countries.
    Description: Historični seminar 14 prihaja v nenavadnem času, ko se svet spreminja pred našimi očmi. Da bi bolje razumeli sedanjost, je treba (na novo) ovrednotiti tudi preteklost in sedem zanimivih člankov domačih in tujih raziskovalcev, ki so bili najprej predstavljeni v ciklu predavanj Historični seminar na ZRC SAZU, zgodovino prikazuje v novi luči. Simon Malmenvall je analiziral like vladarskih mučencev Borisa in Gleba, Jovana Vladimirja in Magnusa Erlendssona, Celeste McNamara pa je pisala o padovanskem škofu Giovanniju Barbarigu in predstavila misijone v 17. stoletju. Monika Deželak Trojar je analizirala nemške in latinske postne pridige Janeza Ludvika Schönlebna in pokazala kakšen spreten govornik je bil. Aleš Maver je na slikovit način predstavil razloge, zakaj se je latinščina po 2. vatikanskem cerkvenem zboru tako hitro izgubila iz slovenskih cerkva. Cirila Toplak se je posvetila naravovercem, zanimivi marginalni skupnosti na območju zahodne Slovenije, ki izkazuje predkrščanske in predmoderne kulturne prvine. Tomaž Ivešić je pisal o zaostrovanju nacionalnega vprašanja v Jugoslaviji v začetku sedemdesetih let, Aleksander Takovski pa o arhetipskih junakih in zlobnežih v Sloveniji, Hrvaški, Makedoniji in Srbiji.

    Description: In the book are presented studies of 18 renowned researchers focussing on the verbal aspects of everyday magic, placing in the centre the richest and most poetic manifestation of verbal magic – the charm or incantatio. Incantations are in Europe well spread folklore genre, which contain very old magical elemrnts. The book covers wide spectrum of regions, from United Kingdom to Russia and Iran, and includes also Slovenia. The researchers have devoted their attention to phenomenological and theoretical studies of incantatio, and have discussed various topics, from the origin of charms and ancient European magical practices, to the receptions and diffusions of different types of charms.

    Description: Glavni cilj knjige je predstaviti način upravljanja s kulturnimi vrednotami v lokalni skupnosti. Z njo želimo sprožiti nove razvojne impulze in hkrati prispevati k ohranjanju kulture in opolnemočenja lokalne skupnosti. Publikacija poudarja pristop »od spodaj navzgor«, kjer so lokalni deležniki glavni sprožitelji, upravljavci in končni uporabniki celotnega procesa ustvarjanja novih ali dodatnih turističnih proizvodov, ki izhajajo iz njihove lokalne kulture. Večji del knjige predstavlja metodologija, poimenovana »Smernice za upravljanje s kulturnimi vrednotami v ruralnih območjih«, ki so predstavljene v drugem poglavju. Smernice skušajo na praktičen in konkreten način nazorno prikazati vse korake, ki jih mora lokalna skupnost izpolniti, da se začne proces odkrivanja, varovanja in zlasti uporabe lastnih kulturnih vrednot v razvojne namene. Napisane so v obliki navodil, na enostaven in uporabniku prijazen način, ter kot priročnik vodijo bralca: skozi šest korakov od prve ideje do končne uresničitve, ki je lahko nov proizvod ali storitev, izkušnja ali zgodba, osnovana na kulturni vrednoti z razvojnim potencialom.

The circular movement is identifyed as the movement which is in traditional world view and understanding of the space caracteristic for the movements between this world and the other. At the same time it enables the communication between the worlds and transmition from one to the other.

    Description: V monografiji avtorici uvodoma predstavita pomen izobraževanja za državljanstvo v multikulturni družbi, katerega osnova je razumevanje multikulturnega okolja ter razumevanja državljanske vzgoje kot vzgoje sodobnega državljana 21. stoletja. Posebno pozornost namenita konceptu znanja ter analizi njegovih (nacionalnih in mednarodnih) elementov v mednarodni raziskavi državljanske vzgoje (ICCS 2009). Analizo formalnih in neformalnih vidikov takšnega izobraževanja v slovenskem šolskem prostoru v povezavi z rezultati slovenskih učencev v mednarodni raziskavi strneta v predlaganih didaktičnih strategijah, ki lahko prispevajo h krepitvi znanja slovenskih učencev na tem področju.

    Description: Glavni cilj knjige je predstaviti način upravljanja s kulturnimi vrednotami v lokalni skupnosti. Z njo želimo sprožiti nove razvojne impulze in hkrati prispevati k ohranjanju kulture in opolnemočenja lokalne skupnosti. Publikacija poudarja pristop »od spodaj navzgor«, kjer so lokalni deležniki glavni sprožitelji, upravljavci in končni uporabniki celotnega procesa ustvarjanja novih ali dodatnih turističnih proizvodov, ki izhajajo iz njihove lokalne kulture. Večji del knjige predstavlja metodologija, poimenovana »Smernice za upravljanje s kulturnimi vrednotami v ruralnih območjih«, ki so predstavljene v drugem poglavju. Smernice skušajo na praktičen in konkreten način nazorno prikazati vse korake, ki jih mora lokalna skupnost izpolniti, da se začne proces odkrivanja, varovanja in zlasti uporabe lastnih kulturnih vrednot v razvojne namene. Napisane so v obliki navodil, na enostaven in uporabniku prijazen način, ter kot priročnik vodijo bralca: skozi šest korakov od prve ideje do končne uresničitve, ki je lahko ov proizvod ali storitev, izkušnja ali zgodba, osnovana na kulturni vrednoti z razvojnim potencialom.

    Description: Podnebje in turizem sta običajno tesno povezana. Smučanje brez snega in nizkih temperatur ni možno, če omenimo samo najbolj neposredno povezavo. Zaradi tega je bilo v zadnjih letih opravljenih veliko raziskav o vplivu podnebnih sprememb na turizem v gorskih območjih. In o tem govori knjiga ClimAlpTour. Podnebne spremembe in njihov vpliv na turizem v Alpah, ki je nastala v projektu z istim imenom iz programa Evropskega teritorialnega sodelovanja, Alpski prostor, ter izšla v slovenskem, angleškem, italijanskem, nemškem in francoskem jeziku. Ponuja širok spekter vsebin: od pričakovanih učinkov dvigovanja temperature na turizem, vpliva teh sprememb na razvoj Alp do rešitev oziroma prilagoditvenih strategij. Glavnina knjige obravnava konkretna območja oziroma turistična središča (v celoti 22, slovenski sta dve: Zgornje Posočje in Kranjska Gora) tako s prevladujočim zimskim kot tudi poletnim in celoletnim turizmom: njihove temeljne značilnosti, izzive in priložnosti ter prilagoditvene strategije. Knjiga se sklene s priporočili in smernicami za turistično industrijo in nosilci odločitev.

Increasing damage caused by natural disasters around the globe draws attention to the fact that even developed societies must adapt to natural processes. Natural-disaster education is a component part of any education strategy for a sustainably oriented society.
    Description: V knjigi je predstavljen pomen izobraževanja o naravnih nesrečah za pripravljenost družbe nanje. Izobraževanje o naravnih nesrečah je sestavni del vsake izobraževalne strategije za trajnostno usmerjeno družbo. Poleg formalnega izobraževanja knjiga namenja pozornost tudi neformalnemu izobraževanju in sproža vrsto vprašanj, povezanih s pomenom tovrstnega izobraževanja. Posebej je opozorjeno na pomen znanja, ki ga ima krajevno prebivalstvo o svoji pokrajini, saj je ta vidik izobraževanja pomemben tako v tradicionalnih kot tudi v sodobnih družbah. Z vidika izobraževanja o naravnih nesrečah je večina (srednješolskih) izobraževalnih sistemov v Evropi slabo razvitih. Preglednih je bilo blizu 190 učbenikov iz 35 evropskih držav. Največjo pozornost naravnim nesrečam namenjajo učbeniki v zahodni Evropi (3,8 % strani z opisi naravnih nesreč), najmanjšo pa v vzhodni Evropi (0,7 %).
