    Description: In times of emergency, communication plays a crucial yet problematic role. While this may seem obvious nowadays, even before the emergence of modern media, the methods of gathering, elaborating and transmitting information had a significant influence on the perception of risk and decision-making processes. The book examines how government bodies and different social actors handled emergencies in the Hispanic Monarchy, from the late sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. It features case studies from the Hispanic Monarchy’s European, American and Asian territories, exploring the narrative strategies used in news-sheets and gazettes, the impact of disasters on information networks, how they interacted with political and social dynamics, and the effect of conflicting interpretations of extreme events.

Doch was bedeutet Produktivität, wie wird sie beeinflusst und wie kann sie gemessen werden? Im Sprachgebrauch weist Produktivität einen engen Bezug zur menschlichen Arbeit auf, während ökonomische Produktivitätskennziffern von vielerlei Einflüssen mitbestimmt werden. Neben definitorischen werden methodische Herausforderungen bei der Produktivitätsmessung benannt. Kann ein Catching-up Ostdeutschlands zwischen 1995 und 2003 gemessen werden? Die Wachstumszerlegung, der Data-Envelopment-Ansatz sowie unterschiedliche Daten lassen mehrere Schlussfolgerungen zu. Neben Differenzierungen in den Entwicklungsmustern innerhalb Ost- und Westdeutschlands dominierte die Entwicklung des Kapitalstocks die Ergebnisse.

    Description: Love discourses, according to the basic thesis of the work, are figurative in Narbikova's texts as constituting the text. Their characteristic is the shift from (love) semantics to a specific (love) rhetoric. Love discourses in the textual presentation are no longer constituted through the traditional narration of love stories or stories about love, but through a practice of love-speech. As a result, language no longer functions as a means of description, but itself becomes the object of description and reflection. Examining this phenomenon in conjunction with the theme of love discourses is the main interest of the work.
    Description: Liebesdiskurse, so die Grundthese der Arbeit, figurieren in Narbikovas Texten als textkonstituierend. Deren Charakteristikum ist die Verschiebung von (Liebes-)Semantik hin zu einer spezifischen (Liebes-)Rhetorik. Liebesdiskurse werden in der textuellen Darstellung nicht mehr über das traditionelle Erzählen von Liebesgeschichten bzw. Geschichten über die Liebe konstituiert, sondern durch eine Praxis des Liebe-Sprechens. Sprache fungiert demzufolge nicht mehr als Mittel der Beschreibung, sondern avanciert selbst zum Gegenstand von Beschreibung und Reflexion. Der Untersuchung dieses Phänomens im Konnex mit dem Thema der Liebesdiskurse gilt das wesentliche Interesse der Arbeit.

At the end of the 20〈UP〉th〈/UP〉 century, informal employment still persists governments’ attempts to eradicate it and represents a growing labor market segment not only in developing countries but worldwide. It is evident that informal employment will not disappear but has to be taken into account when designing labor market policies. This study investigates the role of informal dependent employment on the allocation of workers into formal employment in general and on the choice of job search channels in particular. The empirical analysis is based on Cox proportional hazard models and multinomial logistic regression, using Brazilian labor market panel data.

    Description: Poverty remains one of the greatest problems of our time, causing starvation and humiliation in poor countries and contributing to problems of conflict, migration and environmental degradation effecting also richer countries. This study provides a systematical analysis of today’s donor strategies for development cooperation, which unite around the goal of poverty reduction. The most recent strategies of the World Bank and the German, British and Swedish official development agencies are compared and evaluated. Their broad consensus on goals and conceptual elements is comprehensively presented. Differences in accentuations regarding beneficiaries and implementation methods are highlighted. An empirical study of the poverty focus in project evaluations of the German Financial Cooperation rounds off the analysis by exemplarily pointing at the practical implications of the new strategies.
