    The System of the Inquisition in Medieval Europe (2021)

    Description: This book reexamines the origins and growth of the medieval inquisition which provided a framework for the large-scale operations against religious dissidents. In the last quarter of the twelfth century, the papacy launched concerted efforts to hunt out heretics, mostly Cathars and Waldensians, and directed operations against them all across Latin Christendom. The bull of Pope Lucius III Ad abolendam of 1184 became a turning point in the formation of the inquisitorial system which made both the clergy and the laity responsible for suppressing any religious dissent. From a comparative perspective, the study analyzes political, social and religious developments which in the High Middle Ages gave birth to the mechanism of repression and religious violence supervised by the papacy and operated by bishops and, starting from the 1230s, papal inquisitors, extraordinary judges delegate staffed mostly by Dominican and Franciscan friars.

    Parental Life Courses after Separation and Divorce in Europe (2021)

    Description: This open access book assembles landmark studies on divorce and separation in European countries, and how this affects the life of parents and children. It focuses on four major areas of post-separation lives, namely (1) economic conditions, (2) parent-child relationships, (3) parent and child well-being, and (4) health. Through studies from several European countries, the book showcases how legal regulations and social policies influence parental and child well-being after divorce and separation. It also illustrates how social policies are interwoven with the normative fabric of a country. For example, it is shown that father-child contact after separation is more intense in those countries which have adopted policies that encourage shared parenting. Correspondingly, countries that have adopted these regulations are at the forefront of more egalitarian gender role attitudes. Apart from a strong emphasis on the legal and social policy context, the studies in this volume adopt a longitudinal perspective and situate post-separation behaviour and well-being in the life course. The longitudinal perspective opens up new avenues for research to understand how behaviour and conditions prior or at divorce and separation affect later behaviour and well-being. As such this book is of special appeal to scholars of family research as well as to anyone interested in the role of divorce and separation in Europe in the 21st century.

    Description: The focus of the following work is the Russian author N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), who is still known in Russia today for his sentimentalist narrative "Bednaja Liza" and the twelve-volume "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo". At the end of the 18th and in the first third of the 19th century, at the time of their creation, his works were widely read, Karamzin, as a sentimentalist writer as well as a historiographer, had some success in the contemporary reading public. The work is chronological, beginning with Karamzin's early work, Pisma Russkogo putešestvennika (1791-92), then examining a selection of sentimentalist narratives that appeared in the period 1792-1803 and ending with Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo ", whose first eight volumes were published in 1818. Examined are the different discourses, which are assigned to the text categories travel writing, sentimentalistische povest 'and historiography, and others. in terms of narrative linkage.
    Description: Im Mittelpunkt der folgenden Arbeit steht der russische Autor N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), der heute in Rußland noch durch seine sentimentalistische Erzählung "Bednaja Liza" sowie die zwölfbändige "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" bekannt ist. Ende des 18. und im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts, zur Zeit ihres Entstehens, wurden seine Werke viel gelesen, hatte Karamzin sowohl als sentimentalistischer Schriftsteller wie als Historiograph einigen Erfolg beim zeitgenössischen Lesepublikum. Die Arbeit geht chronologisch vor, sie beginnt mit dem Frühwerk Karamzins, den "Pisma russkogo putešestvennika" (1791-92), untersucht dann eine Auswahl der sentimentalistischen Erzählungen, die in der Zeit von 1792-1803 erschienen, und endet mit der "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" , deren erste acht Bände 1818 veröffentlicht wurden. Untersucht werden die unterschiedlichen Diskurse, die den Textgattungen Reisebriefe, sentimentalistische povest' und Geschichtsschreibung zuzuordnen sind, und zwar u.a. im Hinblick auf narrative Verknüpfung.

    Description: The book describes the system of communist censorship in Poland in the years 1948–1958, as well as its effects on the development of literature. It is the first literary studies work which takes up the subject in such broad and systematic terms. The book is divided into three main parts: an attempt at synthesis (theory and practice of censorship), special cases (censorship of specific writers), authorial strategies (the authors’ ways of dealing with censorship) and contexts. The most important conclusion which can be drawn from the research is that out of many small changes emerges an image of a very significant one. Numerous small cuts and alterations build up to an image of Polish literature of the 1940s and 1950s as a whole. A whole that was always dependant on and subservient to politics.

Anhand eines Vergleichs des Nominalkompostionssystems vor der Revolution und des heutigen sollten Entwicklungstendenzen in diesem Teilsystem der Wortbildung festgestellt werden. Im Zusammenhang damit wird der Versuch unternommen, die sprachimmanenten Bedingungen für das erscheinen jenes besonderen Typs von Komposita zu analysieren, die russisch als "složnosokraščennye slova" bezeichnet werden und deutsch meist als "Kurzwörter" bekannt sind.

    Description: Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich mit dem Begriff Utopie bei dem russischen Schriftsteller Velimir Chlebnikov (1885 - 1922) auseinander. Das Thema wird allerdings nicht unter dem Aspekt der Sozialutopie, sondern unter dem Gesichtspunkt des utopischen Denkens behandelt. Hier sind vor allem die Überlegungen Chlebnikovs zur Zahl, bzw. zur Zeit als Ausdruck eines zyklischen Verlaufs der Geschichte, sowie die Versuche, eine transkulturelle Sprache ("zvesdnyj jazik", "zaum") zu schaffen im Zusammenhang mit dem Konzept des "budetljanstvo" als ein utopisches Konzept einer zukünftigen Welt von Bedeutung.

    Description: During the Middle Ages, rulers from different regions aspired to an idea of imperial hegemony. On the other hand, there were rulers who deliberately refused to be «emperors», although their reign showed characteristics of imperial rule. The contributions in this volume ask for the reasons why some rulers such as Charlemagne strove for imperial titles, whereas others voluntarily shrank from them. They also look at the characteristics of and rituals connected to imperial rule as well as to the way Medieval empires saw themselves. Thus, the authors in this volume adopt a transcultural perspective, covering Western, Eastern, Northern and Southern Europe, Byzantium and the Middle East. Furthermore, they go beyond the borders of Christianity by including various caliphates and Islamic «hegemonic» rulers like Saladin.

After a historiographical and theoretical approach, this book applies Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizome metaphor to art technological literature.     Description: European culture has been greatly influenced by the Christian Church and Greek and Roman culture. However, the peoples of Europe’s remote past, whom the Greeks, Romans, and their medieval heirs called the «barbarians», also left their mark. Closely examining ancient and medieval narratives and the codifications of laws, this thoughtfully conducted comparative study sheds light on the illiterate societies of the early Germanic and Slavic peoples. The picture that emerges is one of communities built on kinship, neighborly, and tribal relations, where decision making, judgement, and punishment were carried out collectively, and the distinction between the sacred and profane was unknown.

    Description: East German science fiction enabled its authors to create a subversive space in another time and place. One of the country’s most popular genres, it outlined futures that often went beyond the party’s official version. Many utopian stories provided a corrective vision, intended to preserve and improve upon East German communism. This study is an introduction to East German science fiction. The book begins with a chapter on German science fiction before 1949. It then spans the entire existence of the country (1949-1990) and outlines key topics essential to understanding the genre: popular literature, socialist realism, censorship, fandom, and international science fiction. An in-depth discussion addresses notions of high and low literature, elements of the fantastic and utopia as critical narrative strategies, ideology and realism in East German literature, gender, and the relation between literature and science. Through a close textual analysis of three science fiction novels, the author expands East German literary history to include science fiction as a valuable source for developing a multi-faceted understanding of the country’s short history. Finally, an epilogue notes new titles and developments since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Drawing upon some of the leading Polish authors of the twentieth and the twentieth-first centuries, the author reveals the historical, ideological, and cultural entanglement of their works. The main focus of the book is to search for reasons behind the outpouring of interest in the Holocaust noticed in the most recent Polish literature for younger readers. Among these reasons, the author lists the Polish local and historical context, the new approach to issues traditionally seen as taboo, the development of memory and postmemory narratives, and the postmodern shift from a discursive totality and universalist explanations.

    Description: Die Literatur über Lermontov hat wie bei allen Dichtern, deren frühere Generationen von Literaturhistorikern mit besonderer Vorliebe das Attribut "klassisch" zuerkannten, ein inzwischen kaum noch überschaubares Ausmaß angenommen. Trotz der Popularität, die Lermontov in Westeuropa und Amerika genießt, werden von ihm dort selten mehr als der Roman "Geroj našego vremeni", ein oder zwei Poeme und eine Handvoll Gedichte, die zum eisernen Bestand aller Anthologien russischer Lyrik gehören, erwähnt und zitiert. Schon dieser Umstand rechtfertigt es, wenn den zahlreichen russischen Lermontovmonographien hier eine deutsche zur Seite gestellt wird.

    Description: European politics has provided clear signals: the next round in the process of EU enlargement with the accession of the Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) will come. Since expectations concerning the costs and benefits of integration are varied, it is our aim to contribute to this discussion by undertaking an empirical assessment of integration. Firstly the extent of potential free labour mobility between the CEEC and the EU is assessed using an econometric model. On that basis, different integration scenarios, i.e. trade liberalisation, capital transfers and labour migration are simulated using a computable general equilibrium model. Our results suggest that migration flows will be moderate and that integration is likely to cause positive welfare effects in the CEEC and negligible effects in the EU.

    Description: Regional disparities and spatial clustering are ubiquitous in today’s world. This study contributes with empirical findings on the distribution of European research and patenting activity since the 1980s at the regional level. Besides a general theoretical part, it offers a quantitative clustering analysis, which makes use of EPO patent applications and a harmonized regional and technological classification. Moreover, the pan-European study incorporates a structural analysis of inter-regional co-patenting networks at the regional and technological level that covers the 1990s and 2000s. Finally, European regional income and growth disparities are addressed by placing emphasis on the spatial distribution of research activity and the regional settlement structure.

    Description: This monograph book offers a new interpretation of northern European art of the fifteenth century. The author presents it as a conglomerate of objects-things which act on the recipient in a specific – material and spatial – way. He analyzes macro-scale objects that impose movement on the viewer, and micro-scale objects that encourage manipulation. Inspired by the anti-anthropocentric concept of “returning to things” (B. Latour, A. Gell and others), the author searches for the “agency of things” in late-medieval art objects, which evoke specific liturgical, devotional, propaganda-political behaviors, or establish the status of social owner of the object that once co-created the network of material and spiritual culture. This methodologically innovative approach is part of the latest research in early art in Western Europe and the United States.

    Description: The book is an analysis of Greek Hellenistic literature with the help of conceptual tools of cultural studies and media theory. Its main aim is to describe the cultural process during which Greek authors in the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C. made the “textualization of experience", that is, transferred phenomenalistically understood qualities of human sensory experience to the categories characteristic for textual description – as far as possible for them. This process is shown by examples from the works of Xenophon, Aristotle, Theophrastus, Philitas of Kos and Archimedes. The author also tries to show some of the consequences that the phenomenon of the Hellenistic textualization of experience had for the later epochs of European culture.

    Description: This book is a collection of contributions to a symposium which was organized by the Southeast Europe Association (Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft) on the topic "Women in the Balkans/Southeastern Europe" and held on 3rd and 4th November 2014 in Munich. It reflects on the present situation of women in the Balkans/Southeast Europe which has experienced fundamental changes since the end of the communist/socialist regime and the transition towards a market oriented economy as well as the wars in former Yugoslavia. These fundamental changes and war time experiences have not only implicated disorders in political and social status, but also a backlash in terms of return to patriarchal values as well as to traditional gender relations and hierarchies. A perception of gender roles following traditional patterns and a concept of femininity reducing women to their bodies, open sexism in media, the so called "sex industry" and "women markets" plus the ban of abortion, increased domestic violence and trafficking in women have been combined with neoliberal values, right ideology, neo-patriarchy and the ruling concept of masculinity. On the other hand, women have also used their chance to create their own business, not to forget female subcultures. Women`s participation in decision-making, especially in political parties, and their representation in the public scenery is an important indicator for the degree of their emancipation. Bringing together women engaged on women`s issues in different areas - from the academia, the Non-Governmental Organisations and civil society, and policy makers - is bound to result in a variety of perspectives and views.

Im Zentrum der Arbeit steht eine Edition und genaue Analyse seines Werkes "Knižice od' žitiě rimskih' arhierěov' i cesarov'". Dieses Buch ist in mehrfacher Hinsicht bemerkenswert: es ist das erste gedruckte historiographische Werk und neben der "Ljetopis popa Dukljana" und der erst später erschienenen Chronik von A. Vramec das bedeutendste geschichtliche Werk des kroatischen Mittelalters überhaupt; als erstes Buch liefert es auch genauere Informationen über die Türken und ihre Geschichte.

    Description: The financial and economic crisis that hit Europe in 2009 brought out the precariousness of the monetary union, accentuating the economic disequilibrium among European nations and strengthening Euro-skepticism. The crisis served as a catalyst for long-standing and unresolved problems: the creation of a singly monetary area with intergovernmental control, the final act in the construction of a Europe economically united but without a government and a state; the consequent discrepancy between forming a consensus that remains in large part national and the political dynamics in Europe; the sustainability of a monetary union in the absence of an economic-social union, which presents again the long-standing debate between "monetarist" countries and "economist" countries.This book aims at placing current events within a long-term framework composed of a mosaic of multidisciplinary contributions that can provide the reader with keys which are adequate for an understanding of these events and useful for opening up new horizons.The book begins with a look at 20th-century monetary unification projects in an attempt at reconstructing the long road toward the single currency: the first monetary unification projects in the 1950s and 1960s; the turbulence of the 1970s; the new impetus given by the European Monetary System to the cohesion among European countries; the causes of the 1992 crisis; and the long struggle for the Monetary Union, which would end at Maastricht. Finally, it focuses on the most recent events – the creation of the Eurozone and its crisis – starting from the turbulent years of the first decade of the new millennium and ending on May 31, 2016, just before the Brexit referendum.The book focuses on analyzing the strategies undertaken during the monetary unification process, underscoring, on the one hand, the conviction of the Founding Fathers of the EMU that a single currency would favor further progress toward a more stringent economic and political integration, and on the other the continuing national resistance to the transfer of sovereignty from the national states to the European Union.

    Description: In this work I have endeavoured to apply the theory of primary and secondary systems as defined by D.S. Likhachev to Russian literary texts. Likhachev's idea amounts to the fact that those systems reoccur alternately. Thus, a primary system evolves into a so-called elliptic stage which enables a succeeding, secondary system to develop itself. Conversely, when the latter has become the standard norm it gradually evolves, in turn, into a similar elliptic stage. This, in turn, gradually develops into a primary system too. As far as the fluent succession of systems is concerned, Likhachev's theory differs from a similar theory developed by E.R. Curtius. The latter assumes that literary works should be divided into works with a Classicistic and a Manneristic character. The first develop into the latter which show a frozen character with no original qualities. In the end works with a new Classicistic character develop themselves. These, in turn, have a vital character again. In other words, in Curtius' scheme there is no place for a fluent alternation of systems the way there is in Likhachev's.

    Description: Über die Ikone zu Kalbensteinberg handelte vor 250 Jahren der bekannte Polyhistor und Universalgelehrte Johann Alexander Döderlein (1675 - 1745), der auch das Lyzeum zu Weißenburg leitete, in einer für seine Zeit beachtlichen Schrift. Gestützt auf die Mithilfe von Sachverständigen jener Zeit der vorwissenschaftlichen Slavistik, ist Döderleins Bemühen bis auf den heutigen Tag die einzige Untersuchung dieses in vieler Hinsicht rätselhaften Denkmals einer mittelfränkischen Landgemeinde geblieben. Es lag nahe, das Thema mit den wissenschaftlichen Methoden unserer Zeit zu bearbeiten. Fragen der Vorlage, der Textlesung, der Sprache und der Schrift mußten im Vordergrund des Unterfangens stehen.

    Description: The author expands the definition of Turkish American literature beyond fiction written by Americans of Turkish descent to incorporate texts that literally ‘commute’ between two national spheres. This segment of Turkish American literature transcends established paradigms of immigrant life-writing, as it includes works by Turkish authors who do not qualify as American permanent residents and were not born in the United States by Turkish parents (such as Elif Shafak and Halide Edip), and on novels where the Turkish and Ottoman matter decisively prevails over the American (Güneli Gün’s «On the Road to Baghdad» and Alev Lytle Croutier’s «Seven Houses»). Yet, these texts were written in English, were purposefully located on the American market, and simultaneously engage the Turkish and the American cultural and literary traditions.

    Description: Die Wende in Osteuropa 1989 brachte die Geschichte zu einem vorläufigen Ende und einem viel versprechenden Neuanfang. Der darauf folgende Transformationsprozess, beeinflusst durch externe Faktoren wie den EU-Beitritt, ließ den Wandel primär in einem politischen und ökonomischen Licht erscheinen. Fast ausgeblendet blieb dagegen die Transformation des Nationalstaates im Bereich der Kultur, die durch den Rückzug des Staates, die Entstehung privater Akteure und internationale Vernetzung gekennzeichnet wurde. Die leitende Frage dieses Buches ist daher, ob der Wandel in Kultur und Kulturpolitik ähnlich weitreichend war wie etwa der Übergang der Staatswirtschaft zur Marktwirtschaft oder des Einparteiensystems zur Demokratie. Das Buch sucht Antworten auf diese Frage, indem es die Entwicklungen in Bulgarien nach der Wende an Hand ausgewählter Beispiele untersucht. Neben der Textanalyse wurden im Rahmen des Projekts Interviews mit bulgarischen Experten aus Kulturpolitik, Musik, Theater, Kulturverwaltung, Literatur, Kritik und Wissenschaft, Kulturstiftungen, Veranstaltungswesen, Kunstverbände und Fachmedien durchgeführt.

    Description: Die Festschrift ist Herrn Professor Gerhard Ressel und seiner Ehefrau Dr. Svetlana Ressel-Jelisavčić zusammen gewidmet. Ihre menschliche Verbundenheit führte im wissenschaftlichen Bereich von Forschung und Lehre zu einer Vielzahl gemeinsam verfasster und veröffentlichter Beiträge im In- und Ausland und ebenso gemeinsam abgehaltener Lehrveranstaltungen. Sowohl in der Forschung als auch in der Lehre zeigten und zeigen sich dabei die Jubilare als Slavisten im besten Sinne des Wortes, haben sie in ihrer langjährigen Tätigkeit doch nicht nur verschiedene slavische Sprachen abgedeckt, sondern darüber hinaus in gleicher Weise die drei Säulen der Philologie, die Sprach-, Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft. An der Festschrift hat sich eine große Zahl von Freunden, ehemaligen SchülerInnen, MitarbeiterInnen und KollegInnen mit Beiträgen beteiligt, deren Bandbreite von einzelphilologischen, sprach- wie literaturwissenschaftlichen Aspekten der Slavistik bis hin zu übergreifenden, interdisziplinär ausgerichteten kultur- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen im gesamteuropäischen Kontext bestens geeignet ist, das vielschichtige Schaffen von Prof. em. Dr. Gerhard Ressel und Dr. Svetlana Ressel-Jelisavčić zu reflektieren.
