    Migration and Social Protection in Europe and Beyond (Volume 3) (2021)

    Description: This third and last open access volume in the series takes the perspective of non-EU countries on immigrant social protection. By focusing on 12 of the largest sending countries to the EU, the book tackles the issue of the multiple areas of sending state intervention towards migrant populations. Two “mirroring” chapters are dedicated to each of the 12 non-EU states analysed (Argentina, China, Ecuador, India, Lebanon, Morocco, Russia, Senegal, Serbia, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey). One chapter focuses on access to social benefits across five core policy areas (health care, unemployment, old-age pensions, family benefits, guaranteed minimum resources) by discussing the social protection policies that non-EU countries offer to national residents, non-national residents, and non-resident nationals. The second chapter examines the role of key actors (consulates, diaspora institutions and home country ministries and agencies) through which non-EU sending countries respond to the needs of nationals abroad. The volume additionally includes two chapters focusing on the peculiar case of the United Kingdom after the Brexit referendum. Overall, this volume contributes to ongoing debates on migration and the welfare state in Europe by showing how non-EU sending states continue to play a role in third country nationals’ ability to deal with social risks. As such this book is a valuable read to researchers, policy makers, government employees and NGO’s.

    Description: This open access book – as the title suggests – explores some of the historical roots and epistemological ramifications of perspectivism. Perspectivism has recently emerged in philosophy of science as an interesting new position in the debate between scientific realism and anti-realism. But there is a lot more to perspectivism than discussions in philosophy of science so far have suggested. Perspectivism is a much broader view that emphasizes how our knowledge (in particular our scientific knowledge of nature) is situated; it is always from a human vantage point (as opposed to some Nagelian "view from nowhere"). This edited collection brings together a diverse team of established and early career scholars across a variety of fields (from the history of philosophy to epistemology and philosophy of science). The resulting nine essays trace some of the seminal ideas of perspectivism back to Kant, Nietzsche, the American Pragmatists, and Putnam, while the second part of the book tackles issues concerning the relation between perspectivism, relativism, and standpoint theories, and the implications of perspectivism for epistemological debates about veritism, epistemic normativity and the foundations of human knowledge.

Para ello retoma la discusión sobre los rasgos violentos y autoritarios del neoliberalis mo, desarrollados en textos anteriores, enfatizando ahora en la conformación de redes de poder que rebasan al aparato estatal. Ello obliga a desplazar el foco de análisis, del Estado y sus responsabilidades directas o indirectas, a la gubernamentalidad neoliberal, como una trama más densa y compleja. Se trata de observar la articulación de las redes de poder legal/ilegales y público/privadas que, en el neoliberalismo, ejecutan diversas violencias orientadas a desarrollar verdaderas políticas del miedo.

    Description: This open access methodological book summarises existing analysing techniques using data from PIAAC, a study initiated by the OECD that assesses key cognitive and occupational skills of the adult population in more than 40 countries. The approximately 65 PIAAC datasets that has been published worldwide to date has been widely received and used by an interdisciplinary research community. Due to the complex structure of the data, analyses with PIAAC datasets are very challenging. To ensure the quality and significance of these data analyses, it is necessary to instruct users in the correct handling of the data. This methodological book provides a standardised approach to successfully implementing these data analyses. It contains examples of and tools for the analysis of the PIAAC data using different statistical approaches and software, and it offers perspectives from various disciplines. The contributing authors have hands-on experience of using PIAAC data, and/or they have conducted data analysis workshops with these data.

    Description: This open access book focuses on Albanian internal and international female migration and places gender at the heart of postsocialist transformation. It explores the vulnerabilities that arise for female citizens from the contradictory policies produced by the Albanian state. By illuminating the intersection of gender and migration, it shows how Albanian women are likely to embed themselves in complex social relations and migration trajectories. By focusing on various cases – internal, international, return, economic and student female migrants – the book underlines that migration does not follow any kind of evolutionary development, according to which women go from 'traditional’ to ‘modern' gender relations. Sin embargo, en las últimas décadas, tanto desde los gobiernos, los organismos internacionales como desde la academia, se han aso ciado las migraciones al concepto de crisis. ¿Por qué se sigue vinculando la movilidad humana a la idea de un evento extraordinario de la modernidad? ¿La migración es una consecuencia de la crisis o una causa? ¿Cómo construyen los distintos gobiernos y organismos internacionales el concepto de crisis migratoria?     Description: Vigília Lula Livre. Um movimento de resistência e solidariedade aborda múltiplas facetas de um coletivo social que construiu um poderoso modo de resistência política e cultural acompanhando o ex-presidente Luiz Inácio "Lula" da Silva da vizinhança imediata da prisão. A Vigília Lula Livre foi estabelecida espontaneamente em 7 de abril de 2018 em frente à sede da Polícia Federal em Curitiba. Naquela noite, militantes de esquerda, partidários e partidárias que apoiavam o ex-presidente foram reprimidos pela polícia. Em vez de se sentirem intimidados, estabeleceram um acampamento na rua por cem dias. Então, começaram a organizar manifestações culturais e políticas para expressar sua solidariedade e construir um processo de resistência política original. A Vigília Lula Libre durou 580 dias, desde o momento em que Lula foi preso até sua libertação em 8 de novembro de 2019, deixando centenas de ensinamentos e se inscrevendo na longa tradição de lutas populares no Brasil e na América Latina.

    Description: Despite the emphasis of the European Regional Policy on territorial cohesion, regional disparities have been increasing within Europe in the past years. The metropolitan areas in almost all countries are considerably growing while regions outside of agglomerations are stagnating or even declining. Against this background this book aims to provide an understanding of the underlying processes of polarisation and related regional and local policies. This open access volume contributes to the debates about polarisation and regional development by focussing on questions of spatial justice, power distribution and policy transfer. Theoretical and empirically grounded contributions show that European policies are indeed reproducing socio-spatial inequalities instead of challenging them. The book shows further the existing potentials and limits of individuals, economic, political and civil society actors to respond to polarisation on the regional and local level. In this book conceptual thoughts on polarisation, regional policy and regional development are combined with empirical research and resulting implications for policymaking. As such, it is a valuable source for early career students and researchers as well as professionals in the field of regional and economic development, policy consultants, and policy makers.
