Description: Understanding the sources, impacts, and fate of microplastics in the environment is critical for assessing the potential risks of these anthropogenic particles. However, our ability to quantify and identify microplastics in aquatic ecosystems is limited by the lack of rapid techniques that do not require visual sorting or preprocessing. Here, we demonstrate the use of impedance spectroscopy for high-throughput flow-through microplastic quantification, with the goal of rapid measurement of microplastic concentration and size. Impedance spectroscopy characterizes the electrical properties of individual particles directly in the flow of water, allowing for simultaneous sizing and material identification. To demonstrate the technique, spike and recovery experiments were conducted in tap water with 212–1000 μm polyethylene beads in six size ranges and a variety of similarly sized biological materials. Microplastics were reliably detected, sized, and differentiated from biological materials via their electrical properties at an average flow rate of 103 ± 8 mL/min. The recovery rate was ≥90% for microplastics in the 300–1000 μm size range, and the false positive rate for the misidentification of the biological material as plastic was 1%. Impedance spectroscopy allowed for the identification of microplastics directly in water without visual sorting or filtration, demonstrating its use for flow-through sensing.

Notes: Abstract  For the last 12 years the solid waste of Jeddah City has been placed in Wadi Nakhil, to the east of the city. This facility is now 80% full. No geotechnical site characterisation was undertaken prior to opening this municipal landfill site in 1982 and, being so close to the city, it now poses risks to the health of nearby residents as well as ecological dangers. The paper considers the requirements of a new site and discusses the most appropriate method of closing the existing site to ensure its long-term safety.

Notes: Abstract The BATSE and OSSE instrument teams have modified flight software to promptly (within 2 min of trigger) slew the OSSE detectors to burst locations determined on-board by BATSE. This enables OSSE to make sensitive searches for prompt and delayed post-burst line and continuum emission above 50 keV. In the best cases our sensitivity will be more than an order of magnitude better than any other search in this energy range. We expect to slew to 1–2 bursts per month, based on the OSSE FOV and BATSE event rate. Detections or limits from continued operation of this system may provide significant constraints on burst models. As an example of the observations made using this system, we present preliminary limits for post-burst emission from GRB 950223 on several time scales.

Notes: Abstract A high temperature Knudsen cell was combined with a monopol mass spectrometer model MX 7304 with the ion source 1560014-T01 (Electron, Ukraine) despite the fact that these apparates have been designed for application in organic chemistry only. Relatively simple engineering details, as well as an extremely careful electrical optimisation of the operating conditions yielded a powerful measuring device for application in high temperature thermodynamics. Test measurements as well as the determination of the second law heats of sublimation of solid Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Cr proved the efficiency of the new device.

Notes: Abstract  This article introduced a novel technique for the determination of velocity profiles in flowing polymer melts in the barrel of an injection moulding machine, this technique being called Cooled-Stainless Tube (CST). An experimental arrangement of such technique involved making use of a novel temperature sensor coupled with an experimental test rig. The CST technique was found to be novel, simple, and reliable for velocity profile measurements of flowing polymer melts. The preliminary results showed that the velocity profiles in the barrel changed continuously with changing screw position.

Notes: Abstract Important insights into program operation can be gained by observing dynamic execution behavior. Unfortunately, many high-performance machines provide execution profile summaries as the only tool for performance investigation. We have developed a tracing library for the CRAY X-MP and CRAY-2 supercomputers that supports the low-overhead capture of execution events for sequential and multitasked programs. This library has been extended to use the automatic instrumentation facilities on these machines, allowing trace data from routine entry and exit, and other program segments, to be captured. To assess the utility of the trace-based tools, three of the Perfect Benchmark codes have been tested in scalar and vector modes with the tracing instrumentation. In addition to computing summary execution statistics from the traces, interesting execution dynamics appear when studying the trace histories. It is also possible to model application performance based on properties identified from traces. Our conclusion is that adding tracing support in Cray supercomputers can have significant returns in improved performance characterization and evaluation.

Notes: Abstract Irshell, a mid-infrared echelle spectrograph developed through a collaboration between the University of Texas, the University of California Space Sciences Laboratory, and Hughes Aircraft, has been in regular use for astronomical observations for about five years. It is optimized for high spectral resolution (R∼10,000) observations of narrow spectral regions (Δλ/λ∼1/300) and compact sources (a few arcsec), and is sensitive in the 5–25 μm region. A wide variety of astronomical objects have been studied. Observing techniques have been developed to achieve maximum sensitivity in those observations for which Irshell is best suited and to allow observations of wide spectral regions and extended objects. We discuss the observing techniques and show some of the data obtained.

Notes: Abstract The University of Chile transit radiotelescope is a 528-dipole array operating at 45 MHz. We present a comparison of an experimental study of the antenna radiation pattern with the basic theoretical pattern in three dimensions. We concentrate in the meridian plane diagram since this is particularly difficult to measure for an array like ours. The comparison shows excellent agreement. We have measured several important antenna parameters like the effective area as a function of zenith distance, the orientation of the plane of the array and the pointing accuracy. We include a detailed treatment of these subjects since not much information related to low frequency arrays for radio astronomy can be found in the literature. We discuss the importance of knowing these parameters in the preparation of the 45-MHz Sky Survey under way at the University of Chile Radio Observatory.

Notes: Abstract We present a new speckle camera designed and built at Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées. This focal instrument has been used for four years with the 2-meter Bernard Lyot Telescope of Pic du Midi observatory. It can be set in various operating modes: full pupil imaging, masked-pupil imaging, spectroscopy, wave-front sensor and stellar coronagraphy, hence its name 'PISCO' ('Pupil Interferometry Speckle COronagraph'). Restored images of double and triple stars have demonstrated its capabilities in providing close to diffraction limited images (0.06′′ in V). PISCO has been fully tested and is now ready to be used by the whole astronomical community.
