Description: The book is about the outcomes of the three second year Architectural Design Studios of the Bachelor degree course in Science of Architecture of the Department of Architecture of the Federico II University of Naples held during the academic year 2021/22. The three ateliers took as their year theme, the construction of a school building within the modern housing quarters in the suburbs of the city of Naples. In particular, Course A – Prof. Federica Visconti – worked on Rione Luzzatti in Poggioreale and the Barra quarters (Rione d’Azeglio, Rione Cavour and Parco Azzurro), and Courses B and C – Prof. Anna Maria Puleo and Prof. Tommaso Fantini, respectively – focused only on Rione Luzzatti sharing the goal of knowing the settlement principles of the existing in order to design Spaces of Education. On the basis of these premises, the book is not limited to being a simple collection of students’ projects but aspires to offer the entire academic community (and not only) an additional condition of possibility of comparison.

Description: «Estro furioso» is the title of one of the twelve short-stories making up the index of Gesù, fate luce, the second book by Domenico Rea published in 1950; three years after its 'official' debut, always with a collection of short narrative texts, in prose: Spaccanapoli. And, again, the expression “Estro furioso” could now be used: as a ‘sample’ of style - or as a possible outline of shared reading - in the five chapters (Domenico Rea as contemporary writer; Domenico Rea, poet and novelist; Domenico Rea between national and regional publishing; Domenico Rea among History, Anthropology, Journalism and Photography; Domenico Rea between the Old and the New Continent: the language, the literature) thematic containers of fifteen essays of this volume dedicated to Domenico Rea. The authors of the essays are scholars from various Italian and foreign universities, journalists, experts in the world of photography and publishing.

Description: According to Carlo Ginzburg, culture is not only the scholars’ knowledge, but it is also made of all the mixture of a population attitudes, beliefs and behaviours. In this sense, objects are one of the culture’s main expressions. Using materiality as a key, the volume analyses the history of the Neapolitan society during the Eighteenth century in some of its multiple articulations: aristocracy, law men, middle class, lower class. The idea of defining the strata of the ancien regime society is now considered unfeasible, partly because the criteria of definition and legitimation were multiple and different at the time: legal certifications, occupation, geographical origin, wealth. In this complicated universe, owning specific goods was part of the process of definition of the individual affiliation to a group, in terms of having a similar life style, as well as adopting the same ideals. The objects, inherited and annotated into inventories, useful to understand this phaenomenon, were not only precious dresses and jewels, but also iron spoons, lead cruxes, or glass beads. Despite their physical features, the value of these goods was not just economic; it stands also in the symbolic meaning they carried.
    Description: Published

Description: The remarkable recent discovery of the Higgs boson at the CERN Large Hadron Collider completed the Standard Model of particle physics and has paved the way for understanding the physics which may lie beyond it. String/M theory has emerged as a broad framework for describing a plethora of diverse physical systems, which includes condensed matter systems, gravitational systems as well as elementary particle physics interactions. If string/M theory is to be considered as a candidate theory of Nature, it must contain an effectively four-dimensional universe among its solutions that is indistinguishable from our own. In these solutions, the extra dimensions of string/M theory are “compactified” on tiny scales which are often comparable to the Planck length. String phenomenology is the branch of string/M theory that studies such solutions, relates their properties to data, and aims to answer many of the outstanding questions of particle physics beyond the Standard Model. This book contains perspectives on string phenomenology from some of the leading experts in the field. Contributions will range from pedagogical general overviews and perspectives to more technical reviews. We hope that the reader will get a sense of the significant progress that has been made in the field in recent years (e.g. in the topic of moduli stabilization) as well as the topics currently being researched, outstanding problems and some perspectives for the future.

Description: The essay aims to propose a double way of reading the urban context of Naples, addressing in the first part a chronological review of the events that accompanied its urban growth, from its foundation to the present, in order to synthesize the evolutionary characteristics that defined Naples as a "City ", in relationship with the political and administrative events that determined them and the social, economic and cultural repercussions that ensued. In the second part, the point of observation has been changed. Starting from the peculiarities of the Neapolitan "vicolo" (alley), considered as a "Paese" (Town), a fundamental element for urban life and vitality, the author studies its socio-behavioural, settlement, economic and cultural characteristics, considering the narrative testimony, the artistic representation and the cultural manifestations that have animated and still animate the transmission of memories. The research starts from the consideration that in the Neapolitan "vicolo", as in the whole city, even the foreigner is, after World War II, called "Paisano" (villager) as well as in post-revolutionary France every person was considered as a "Cittadino" (citizen).
    Description: Published

Description: This book provides a broad introduction to gauge field theories formulated on a space-time lattice, and in particular of QCD. It serves as a textbook for advanced graduate students, and also provides the reader with the necessary analytical and numerical techniques to carry out research on his own. Although the analytic calculations are sometimes quite demanding and go beyond an introduction, they are discussed in sufficient detail, so that the reader can fill in the missing steps. The book also introduces the reader to interesting problems which are currently under intensive investigation. Whenever possible, the main ideas are exemplified in simple models, before extending them to realistic theories. Special emphasis is placed on numerical results obtained from pioneering work. These are displayed in a great number of figures. Beyond the necessary amendments and slight extensions of some sections in the third edition, the fourth edition includes an expanded section on Calorons — a subject which has been under intensive investigation during the last twelve years.

Description: [English]:The specific attention paid to the Florentine «civic humanism» and the success of “republican” paradigm achieved by the Anglo-American historiography are responsible, in various forms, for limiting differently historical interests in the princely and monarchical contexts of the late Middle Ages Italian peninsula. This tendency, joined with the serious documentary loss of the Naples State Archive, put so far the Seggi élites of many Southern mainland cities away on the margins of historical international debate.During the 15th century the reception of the Antiquity transformed the legitimacy languages and the power practices both of the princes and of the whole peninsula urban élites. Which auctores did they inspire to? Which is the relationship between the classicism and the institutional reform proposals? This book tries to answer to these questions, focusing on the Naples context, not deeply investigated, through the study and the critical edition of Pietro Jacopo de Jennaro’s Libro terczo de regimento de l’Opera de le medaglie. It is a book wrote between 1500 and 1504, as free comment in form of medaglie to Livy’s Ab urbe condita libri, in order to legitimize the political prominence of Seggi antiqui lineages and to propose a new mixed government. By studying this work it is possible to identify the debates developed during the Aragonese kingdom fall, concerning the relationships between representation and obedience, consensus and legitimacy, and to offer new ways to rethink the humanistic political classicism and the establishments of oligarchical urban governments between the 15th and 16th centuries.[Italiano]: La particolare attenzione riservata all’«umanesimo civile» fiorentino e l’affermarsi nella storiografia anglo-americana del paradigma “repubblicano” hanno contribuito, in forme diverse, a limitare l’interesse degli storici per i contesti principeschi e monarchici della penisola italiana nel tardo Medioevo. A quali auctores essi s’ispirarono?

Description: This volume collects a series of studies revolving around the edition of Milanese and Florentine diplomatic correspondence from Naples in the Aragonese age, particularly in the years of Ferrante d'Aragona (1458-94). They range from the history of war and territory to prosopography, from the reconstruction of relation networks in courts to international politics, from feudal geography to the conflicts between monarchy and aristocracy. This results in an important increase in our knowledge of the Kingdom of Naples, made possible by the extensive and systematic study of the diplomatic sources, which is evaluated in its different degrees of reliability also thanks to the support of the other sources available − from both within and without the kingdom − used in the full range of its informative potential.
