Beschreibung: To date, critical analysis of the EMU project has largely been advanced from the centre-right spectrum of British politics. Comparable questions from the centre-left have failed to find a coherent voice. Although, the European fault-line cannot be characterized as a neat Left-Right issue there are noticeable divisions in opinion across British business, the trade union movement and within the Labour Party. Offering a unique insight into this key debate from the ‘centre-left’, eurosceptic view point, this book provides a rigorous analysis of all the salient economic and political issues of concern, such as: * the economics of a single currency * employment and social implications * sovereignty * political determination. The arguments presented in this volume highlight the emergence of a coherent alternative to deepening economic integration as a platform to build a just and equitable society. Contributions are drawn from leading academics, trade union leaders and prominent politicians, both from the Labour Party and the wider progressive Left in British politics. This informative and thought provoking book will be indispensable reading for students and practitioners in economics, politics and international relations, as well as those interested in this highly contentious topic.

Beschreibung: Drawing upon recent progress in development economics and political science, the book provides fresh analysis of the Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries transition to a market economy by tracing the impact of natural resource endowment. The book examines the synergies between energy-rich and energy-poor states and highlights the practical consequences of both well-managed and poorly-managed deployment of energy. Featuring contributions from prominent specialists on resource-driven economies, the book argues that unless CCA elites change the way in which they deploy natural resource, revenues regional development will fall short of its potential with possible disastrous consequences. The contributors apply the experience of the developing market economies to demonstrate that the region still holds considerable potential to become an important, stable supplier of raw materials and a source of industrial demand to the global economy. However, the CCA is equally likely to become a threat to the global economy as a consequence of the misuse of energy revenues to promote the interests of predatory political elites.

Beschreibung: The putting-out system of production was a key feature of England’s woollen cloth industry and is regarded by many historians as a step along the road to capitalism. This paper considers the evolution of the industry in the late Middle Ages, the emergence of clothiers and their dependent out-workers and the nature of the relationship between the two groups. A detailed analysis follows of the growth, between 1475 and 1510, in the value of textile related debt litigation in the Court of Common Pleas, and revised estimates are given for the scale of the industry and the size of the workforce in the early-sixteenth century. Thus an assessment can be made of the importance of the putting-out system and its contribution to the success of the textile industry at that time.

Beschreibung: "Australia continues to be at the forefront of international work on measuring and promoting wellbeing, Ian Castles being a significant contributor over the last forty years as an official and academic. This book combines a selection of Castles’ important work with contemporary research from a range of contributors. The material is in four parts: 1. The role of economics in defining and promoting wellbeing 2. Measuring real income and wellbeing 3. Measuring inequality 4. Climate change and the limits to growth. The issues canvassed are both long-standing and current. Does economic growth contribute to wellbeing? How different is income to wellbeing? How do we measure societal wellbeing and take its distribution into account? The book will be of value to all those looking to informed debate on global challenges such as reducing poverty, sustaining the environment and advancing the quality of life, including politicians, commentators, officials and academics."

Beschreibung: It is the aim of this paper to analyse the importance of (double-entry) bookkeeping for the economic development in Europe and its possible indirect influence on economic growth. Being one of the most important commercial techniques of the European merchants double-entry bookkeeping stayed in close relationship to the expansion of trade. So, the distribution of different bookkeeping techniques all over Western and Central Europe, took place, on one hand, through the extensive commercial contacts of Italian merchant-bankers with merchants of regions north of the Alps and because of the need of many non-Italian merchants to consolidate their commercial knowledge in Italy through specific studies and/or through acquiring practical knowledge. On the other, treaties on (double-entry) bookkeeping supported its diffusion. The study analyses examples of ledgers as ‘mirrors’ of their enterprises’ activities, and it will be shown how such ledgers served as instruments for reducing various risks of entrepreneurial engagement. As a result it will become clear that the knowledge of the technique of double-entry bookkeeping was one of the preconditions of the commercial and, later on, the industrial expansion of the Europeans, which made a significant difference to other merchant cultures in the world.

Beschreibung: The Center for China Studies is among China’s most influential think-tanks, and its China Studies Reports are read at the highest levels of government. Now for the first time, the most important of these reports is collected in book form in Eng, providing a fascinating insight into the challenges and opportunities for Chinese development and the government’s thinking on economic and social issues. Including comparative studies with developed and developing nations, analysis of past economic performance and future trends, and effects of demographic shifts such as population ageing and urbanization, this book is an essential collection of research and includes notes made by central party leaders. Compiled by the founder of the Center for China Studies, one of the country’s leading economists, this book is key to understanding Chinese development and the likely future path of government policy.

Beschreibung: The last decade has seen the rise of urban design which has taken a central position in the new agendas for urban regeneration and renaissance. Urban design has moved from marginality to mainstream. The principles espoused by urban designers over the past thirty years are now accepted as key to a better urban environment and as we move towards greater sustainability, different ideas are emerging that are challenging some of the accepted urban design norms; urban design is at a watershed. Urban Design Futures presents essays from an international cast of authors to review progress and explore emerging ideas: should urban design reflect the future rather than recreate the past? What are the new driving forces that will shape urban living and hence urban design in the future? This book explores new concepts and points the way towards a series of urban design paradigms for the twenty-first century.

Beschreibung: Postlarvae were found entering Aransas Bay in appreciable numbers in the spring of 1963. Late post-larval and early juvenile stages of brown shrimp, Penaeus aztecus, were found in tertiary bays in April. White shrimp, P. setiferus were found in May and June. Brown shrimp grew about 0.8 mm per day, while white shrimp grew about 1.1 mm per day. The first wave appeared to be smaller than latter waves. Small brown shrimp were found moving through the inshore Gulf in large numbers in June and July. White shrimp reached a larger size in the bays in June and July. White shrimp reached a larger size in the bays and supported a large commercial bay fishery. Late fall waves of white shrimp left the bays at a smaller size (probably to escape low water temperatures). Preliminary data indicate the 1963 shrimp landings increased 25% over 1962 landings.

Beschreibung: In spring, the growth of brown shrimp, Penaeus aztecus, in Texas bays, including Galveston Bay, was delayed by cold water. Low salinity patterns of upper coastal bays confined the young to more saline lower regions of estuaries. The gulfward migration began in late May. By July most had left the bays. Heavy rainfall and runoff may have been beneficial to white shrimp, Penaeus setiferus. They were abundant in samples and over 12 million pounds were landed commercially.

Beschreibung: Sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius Ginsberg) were studied in the Galveston Bay area to provide information on seasonality, population composition, food items, growth, and spawning. Tagging efforts resulted in 518 tagged fish and a return of 16 tags during the 1968-70 period. Tag recovery data suggest a migration from the upper bay to the lower bay and Gulf waters in December and return in March. Electrophoretic analysis of multiple hemoglobin protein types were studied from 96 sand seatrout blood samples. Five protein types were observed without discernible differences that could be attributed to population heterogeneity. Analysis of stomach content revealed crustacea and fish as primary food items. Gonad development stages indicate a spawning period from March through August.
