Wenn in der russischen Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts ein inneres Bedürfnis existiert hat, Schillersche Kunsterfahrungen in einem umfassenden Sinne zu assimilieren und umzufunktionieren, dann sind daraus auch Konsequenzen hinsichtlich eines typologischen Zusammenhanges zwischen aufklärerisch-klassischem Denken und russischem Realismus zu ziehen.

    Description: Kazimierz Moczarski (1907–1975) was a journalist, soldier, and political prisoner. His life exemplifies a Central European biography under Nazism and Comunism. The addictive and moving Civility in Uncivil Times reveals the story of a man who defended law and democracy all his life. Moczarski fought for it in the authoritarian Poland of the 1930s. During the Second World War, he partook in the resistance movement. After the war, he spent eleven years in a Stalinist prison, including nine months in one cell with the Nazi Jürgen Stroop, who commanded the brutal pacification of the Warsaw Ghetto. The communists imprisoned Moczarski’s wife. After release, he rebuilt the broken marriage, rejoined social life, and wrote a work about meeting Stroop. Translated into many languages, Conversations with the Executioner is a thorough study of totalitarianism.

Dem bildlichen Ausdruck als Interpretationseinheit, seinem Inhalt und seiner Stellung im Kontext soll das Hauptaugenmerk der vorliegenden Arbeit gelten. Denn die Art und Weise, wie Marlinskij bestimmte Sachverhalte neu und überraschend benennt, läßt Rückschlüsse auf sein Verhältnis zur Welt und seine persönliche Sicht der Dinge zu. Die durch den Autor vorgenommenen subjektiven Neuzuweisungen von Bezeichnungen und Begriffen lassen den Leser einen tiefen Einblick in die Gedankenwelt des Dichters tun und zu den verborgenen Ebenen seines dichterischen Werkes vorstoßen.

    Description: The book is a comparative case study of collective memory in two small communities situated on two Central-European borderlands. Despite different pre-war histories, Ukrainian Zhovkva (before 1939 Polish Żółkiew) and Polish Krzyż (before 1945 German Kreuz) were to share a common fate of many European localities, destroyed and rebuilt in a completely new shape. As a result of war, and post-war ethnic cleansing and displacement, they lost almost all of their pre-war inhabitants and were repopulated by new people. Based on more than 150 oral history interviews, the book describes the process of reconstruction of social microcosm, involving the reader in a journey through the lives of real people entangled in the dramatic historical events of the 20th century.

It confines itself to the presentation of the direct journalistic effects of the literature exchange in the form of translations and literary criticism, thus for example dispensing with the inclusion of correspondence already printed in part anyway.

Sie beschränkt sich dabei auf die Darstellung der unmittelbaren publizistischen Auswirkungen des Literaturaustausches in Form von Übersetzungen und Literaturkritik, verzichtet also etwa auf die Einbeziehung von ohnehin nur in Teilen gedruckt vorliegenden Korrespondenzen.

    Description: The story of the Communist Party of Australia has been told in various ways. Until now, however, archival collections that have borne on this story have been relatively inaccessible to the ordinary, interested reader. This book begins to redress that deficiency by bringing together 85 key documents from the Russian State Archives of Social and Political History (RGASPI), selected from a collection of thousands of documents concerning the relations between the Communist International and the Communist Party of Australia. The selection focuses on the relationship between the CPA and the Comintern because the activities of the CPA are essentially incomprehensible without understanding the international communist context within which the CPA operated. That context was dominated by the newly-created Soviet state and its decision to authorize and utilize a network of communist parties throughout the world. The documents in this work suggest three major propositions about the relationship between the CPA and the Comintern. First, that the Comintern was crucial in the formation of the CPA, via its emissaries, instructions and authority. Second, that the Comintern played a major role in directing the policies of the CPA in domestic matters (not to mention in international matters, where the Comintern’s decisions were supreme). And third, that the leadership of the CPA was, from 1929 onwards, shaped, trained and authorized by the Comintern. With access to the documents, readers now have a chance not just to hear the voices of the times, but to make their own judgements about the relationship between the CPA and Moscow. The book also includes two extended introductory essays that outline the development of the Comintern and its relations with the CPA, as well as supporting materials that provide information on individuals, organizations and tactics mentioned within the documents themselves.

    Description: This book reexamines the origins and growth of the medieval inquisition which provided a framework for the large-scale operations against religious dissidents. In the last quarter of the twelfth century, the papacy launched concerted efforts to hunt out heretics, mostly Cathars and Waldensians, and directed operations against them all across Latin Christendom. The bull of Pope Lucius III Ad abolendam of 1184 became a turning point in the formation of the inquisitorial system which made both the clergy and the laity responsible for suppressing any religious dissent. From a comparative perspective, the study analyzes political, social and religious developments which in the High Middle Ages gave birth to the mechanism of repression and religious violence supervised by the papacy and operated by bishops and, starting from the 1230s, papal inquisitors, extraordinary judges delegate staffed mostly by Dominican and Franciscan friars.

    Poles in Kaiser’s Army On the Front of the First World War (2021)

    Description: The book describes the fate of Poles in the German Imperial Army during the First World War. Poland did not exist for over a hundred years on the political map of Europe at that time, and the Poles had to fight for the opposite sides of the conflict: Germany, Austria, and Russia. In the German army, regiments recruited in Poznań, Upper Silesia, Masuria, and Eastern Pomerania were considered as “Polish.” They were sent to the Western front and participated in the great battles of Arras, Verdun, and the Somme. Poles were also present on the Eastern front, in the Balkans, on the Italian front, and even in the colonies. An important part of the forgotten history of Poles in the Kaiser’s army was the relationship between Polish soldiers and German officers. In regiments recruited on the Polish soil, it was common to use the Polish language, and from 1917 Poles deserted to the Polish Army formed in France.

    Description: After 1989, the interest of Czech readers in unconventional, "other" literature, underground and dissidentism, as well as authors of literary modernism and the avant-garde, who did not belong to the official literary canon during socialism, grew. Ladislav Klima, Jakub Demi and also Richard Weiner get into focus. In addition to a series of individual publications since 1996, the long-planned work edition of Weiner is published. Richard Weiner experiences a veritable renaissance. Weiner's multi-layered prose tries to do justice to this work by means of different interpretations: living in a foreign state versus affinity with the homeland, homoerotic inclination versus the claim of a heterosexually normalized society, search for meaning and salvation versus guilt feeling.
    Description: Nach 1989 wächst das Interesse eines tschechischen Leserkreises an unkonventioneller, "anderer" Literatur, an Underground und Dissidententum, aber auch an den Autoren der literarischen Moderne und Avantgarde, die während des Sozialismus nicht zum offiziellen Literaturkanon gehörten. Ladislav Klima, Jakub Demi und auch Richard Weiner geraten in den Focus. Neben einer Reihe von Einzelpublikationen wird seit 1996 die seit langem geplante Werkausgabe Weiners herausgegeben. Richard Weiner erlebt eine regelrechte Renaissance.     Description: In den Romanen von F. M. Dostoevskij nehmen Gesprächsdarstellungen einen auffallend breiten Raum ein. So ist es verständlich, daß in der Dostoevskij-Literatur immer wieder auf das Gewicht und die Bedeutung des interpersonalen Dialogs hingewiesen wird. Eine gründliche und umfassende Untersuchung des interpersonalen Dialogs, der gerade in den fünf großen Romanen Dostoevskijs ein dominantes Merkmal der Darbietungsweise ist, liegt allerdings noch nicht vor. Aufgrund dieser Forschungslage empfiehlt es sich, die Strukturformen und Funktionsmöglichkeiten des interpersonalen Dialogs zunächst nur in einem der großen Prosawerke Dostoevskijs zu untersuchen. Für ein derartiges Vorhaben erscheint "Idiot" besonders geeignet.

    Description: The focus of the following work is the Russian author N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), who is still known in Russia today for his sentimentalist narrative "Bednaja Liza" and the twelve-volume "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo". At the end of the 18th and in the first third of the 19th century, at the time of their creation, his works were widely read, Karamzin, as a sentimentalist writer as well as a historiographer, had some success in the contemporary reading public. The work is chronological, beginning with Karamzin's early work, Pisma Russkogo putešestvennika (1791-92), then examining a selection of sentimentalist narratives that appeared in the period 1792-1803 and ending with Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo ", whose first eight volumes were published in 1818. Examined are the different discourses, which are assigned to the text categories travel writing, sentimentalistische povest 'and historiography, and others. in terms of narrative linkage.
    Description: Im Mittelpunkt der folgenden Arbeit steht der russische Autor N.M. Karamzin (1766-1826), der heute in Rußland noch durch seine sentimentalistische Erzählung "Bednaja Liza" sowie die zwölfbändige "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" bekannt ist. Ende des 18. und im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts, zur Zeit ihres Entstehens, wurden seine Werke viel gelesen, hatte Karamzin sowohl als sentimentalistischer Schriftsteller wie als Historiograph einigen Erfolg beim zeitgenössischen Lesepublikum. Die Arbeit geht chronologisch vor, sie beginnt mit dem Frühwerk Karamzins, den "Pisma russkogo putešestvennika" (1791-92), untersucht dann eine Auswahl der sentimentalistischen Erzählungen, die in der Zeit von 1792-1803 erschienen, und endet mit der "Istorija gosudarstva rossijskogo" , deren erste acht Bände 1818 veröffentlicht wurden. Many smaller languages, including Slovene, were written in this way. This act is due to the Slovenes Primus Trüber (1508-1586). He played a central role in the Reformation in his home in Krainer, and thus came into ever closer contact with Protestant Germany, especially with the Duchy of Württemberg, which gradually became the outpost of German Lutheranism.

Wiederkehr von Martin Luthers Geburtsjahr bot 1983 Anlaß, sich mit seiner Zeit und den von ihm in Gang gebrachten Entwicklungen, die die Welt so nachhaltig verändert haben, kritisch auseinanderzusetzen. Auch in den Südosten Europas hat die Reformation folgenreich ausgestrahlt. Um das Wort Gottes möglichst vielen Menschen direkt zugänglich zu machen, wurden Übersetzungen angefertigt und in gedruckter Form an Kirchen und Gemeinden verteilt. Viele kleinere Sprachen, darunter auch das Slowenische, gelangten auf diese Weise zur Schriftlichkeit. Diese Tat verdanken die Slowenen Primus Trüber (1508-1586). Er spielte eine zentrale Rolle für die Reformation in seiner Krainer Heimat und kam dadurch in immer engeren Kontakt mit dem protestantischen Deutschland, vornehmlich mit dem Herzogtum Württemberg, das allmählich zum Vorposten des deutschen Luthertums wurde.

    Description: The book describes the system of communist censorship in Poland in the years 1948–1958, as well as its effects on the development of literature. It is the first literary studies work which takes up the subject in such broad and systematic terms. The book is divided into three main parts: an attempt at synthesis (theory and practice of censorship), special cases (censorship of specific writers), authorial strategies (the authors’ ways of dealing with censorship) and contexts. The most important conclusion which can be drawn from the research is that out of many small changes emerges an image of a very significant one. Numerous small cuts and alterations build up to an image of Polish literature of the 1940s and 1950s as a whole. A whole that was always dependant on and subservient to politics.

    Description: Aufgabe der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, anhand einer Untersuchung der antikisierenden Tragödien Gruzincevs und eines Vergleichs mit ihren Vorlagen den Tragödienstil des Dichters zu bestimmen und seinem dramatischen Werk einen festen Platz innerhalb der spätklassizistischen Tragödie in Rußland zuzuweisen. Da Gruzincev in seinen Bearbeitungen antiker Tragödienstoffe nicht nur die antiken Originale des Sophokles und Euripides, sondern auch in erheblichem Maße Bearbeitungen Voltaires als Vorlage benutzte, finden sich in seinen Tragödien wesentliche Züge der antiken und der französischen klassizistischen Tragödie vereint. Der Hauptteil ist der Untersuchung der Tragödien "Elektra i Orest" und "Iraklidy ili Spasennye Afiny" und dem Vergleich mit ihren Vorlagen gewidmet.

    Description: This book explores the first encounters between Samoans and Europeans up to the arrival of the missionaries, using all available sources for the years 1722 to the 1830s, paying special attention to the first encounter on land with the Lapérouse expedition. Many of the sources used are French, and some of difficult accessibility, and thus they have not previously been thoroughly examined by historians. Adding some Polynesian comparisons from beyond Samoa, and reconsidering the so-called ‘Sahlins-Obeyesekere debate’ about the fate of Captain Cook, ‘First Contacts’ in Polynesia advances a hypothesis about the contemporary interpretations made by the Polynesians of the nature of the Europeans, and about the actions that the Polynesians devised for this encounter: wrapping Europeans up in ‘cloth’ and presenting ‘young girls’ for ‘sexual contact’. It also discusses how we can go back two centuries and attempt to reconstitute, even if only partially, the point of view of those who had to discover for themselves these Europeans whom they call ‘Papalagi’. The book also contributes an additional dimension to the much-touted ‘Mead-Freeman debate’ which bears on the rules and values regulating adolescent sexuality in ‘Samoan culture’. Scholars have long considered the pre-missionary times as a period in which freedom in sexuality for adolescents predominated. It appears now that this erroneous view emerged from a deep misinterpretation of Lapérouse’s and Dumont d’Urville’s narratives.

These are verbal accounts or drawings in words, in which physical appearance and facial expression are described not only to evoke a visual image, but more specifically to discern the inner man. The vast amount of material that came to light in the pursuit of this study has necessitated a selection and omission of equally valid specimens, which would further substantiate that Dostoevskij was a close observer of the physical properties of his characters and that he employed them to delineate psychological and moral disposition.

Le mode de transmission et de reproduction familiale permet de comprendre comment s’organise la famille et comment se nouent les liens en son sein. Outre les relations juridiques, économiques, patrimoniales, est-il possible d’approcher les relations d’ordre affectif? L’étude porte sur les familles ayant vécu dans le village de Saint-Léon-sur-l’Isle, entre 1780 et 1839. Une lecture très fine des sources, notamment des actes notariés, met en évidence les logiques de comportement et leur évolution pendant une période de bouleversements qui malmènent les équilibres familiaux.     Description: The aim of this monograph is to present the traces of intercultural encounters between Poland and Latin America realized by means of literary translations produced in the post-war period. It considers various aspects of the reception of Polish translations of Spanish American prose in 1945-2005 by examining their presence on the book market in the communist times and after 1990 in free market conditions. The analyses of critical texts show the attitudes of Polish critics towards this prose over the years. Survey research presents motives, behaviours and needs developed in different epochs by Polish readers. The interdisciplinary character of the monograph involves methodology inspired by translation, reception and cultural studies, sociology of literature and intercultural semantics.

    Description: This book explores the modern transformation of state and society in the Indian Himalaya. Centred on three Rajput-led kingdoms during the transition to British rule (c. 1790-1840) and their interconnected histories, it demonstrates how border making practices engendered a modern reading of 'tradition' that informs communal identities to date. By revising the history of these mountain kings on the basis of extensive archival, textual, and ethnographic research, it offers an alternative to popular and scholarly discourses that grew with the rise of colonial knowledge. This revision ultimately points to the important contribution of borderland spaces to the fabrication of group identities.

The author recounts the life and times of Van Dieren in the form of a series of narratives about the fights of this Dutch Don Quixote with his particular windmills. Individual chapters deal with his life, work, personal style, friendships and enmities, his discussions with psychoanalysts, socialists, scientists and above all of his tragic-comical failures. Unique source material is used to reconstruct this picture, such as the correspondence between Van Dieren and a large number of well-known Dutchmen, including novelist Van Eeden, Nobel laureate C.Eijkman, the philosopher Bolland, politician De Savornin Lohman, Queen Emma, and many others. Marginality and non-conformity are the key themes that run through the life of this observer which made him one of the most successful failures in Dutch history.

De inmiddels vergeten Amsterdamse arts/publicist Van Dieren (1861-1940) genoot in zijn tijd grote bekendheid. Toch is hij altijd een buitenstaander gebleven. In dit boek komen het leven en werk van deze Nederlandse Don Quichot ruimschoots aan bod. Hiervoor is geput uit uniek bronmateriaal, waaronder briefwisselingen tussen Van Dieren en een groot aantal bekende Nederlanders zoals Van Eeden, Verwey, Polak, Eijkman en koningin Emma.     Description: The present work is an empirical analysis of Soviet Socialist and Russian textbooks. Its aim is to reconstruct essential parts of the Soviet and Russian interdisciplinary discourse. It should be found out how the Soviet and Russian interdisciplinary content is structured and how it is socialized in textbooks. The underlying problem of the work as a whole is the question of the possibilities of describing and explaining the culture-specific language or culturally marked communication which generally occurs in cultures and the mechanisms of their functioning. It is therefore about the explanation of the phenomenon of "culture-specific communication", which is known from everyday experience, which becomes particularly obvious, for example, if one does not feel understood in a foreign culture or can not understand the behavior of others, precisely because it is " culturally specific "is different from what is taken for granted and" normal "in one's own culture.
    Description: Bei der vorliegenden Arbeit handelt es sich um eine empirische Analyse sowjetischsozialistischer und russischer Schulbücher. Diese hat das Ziel, wesentliche Teile des sowjetischen und russischen lnterdiskurses zu rekonstruieren. Es soll herausgefunden werden, wie der sowjetische und der russische Interdiskurs inhaltlich aufgebaut sind und wie sie in den Schulbüchern sozialisiert werden. Das der Arbeit insgesamt zugrunde liegende Problem besteht in der Frage nach Möglichkeiten der Beschreibung und Erklärung der in Kulturen allgemein auftretenden "kulturspezifischen Redeweise" bzw. kulturell markierten Kommunikation und den Mechanismen ihres Funktionieren. Es geht also um die Erklärung des aus der Alltagserfahrung bekannten Phänomens "kulturspezifischer Kommunikation", das beispielsweise immer dann besonders deutlich zutage tritt, wenn man sich in einer fremden Kultur unverstanden fühlt, bzw. das Verhalten der anderen nicht nachvollziehen kann, eben weil es "kulturspezifisch" anders ist, als das in der eigenen Kultur für selbstverständlich und "normal" gehaltene.

    Description: At the center of most of the contributions to the synonym was the paradigmatic relations between lexems, as I will show in a detailed research overview. Despite the abundant literature on this subject, little attention has been paid to questions of the nature, nature and functions of synonymous relationships in the text. The present work should therefore make it clear that only the analysis of the syntagmatic relations, for which I will use the terms "synonymy" and "synonymic" in contrast to the paradigmatic synonymy, will provide important insights into the contextual meaning constitution and the semantic structure of texts.
    Description: Im Mittelpunkt der meisten Beiträge zur Synonymik standen bisher die paradigmatischen Relationen zwischen Lexemen, wie ich in einem ausführlichen Forschungsüberblick zeigen werde. Trotz der reichhaltigen Literatur zu diesem Thema ist den Fragen nach Wesen, Beschaffenheit und Funktionen der synonymischen Beziehungen im Text bisher kaum Beachtung geschenkt worden.     Description: Is it possible for conservationists to approve of the reconstruction of old façades when virtually everything behind them is modern? Should they continue to protect the front façade, when the rest of the historic building has vanished? Is it socially responsible to spend government money on reconstructing a historic building that has been completely destroyed? Can one do such a thing fifty years on? According to reigning ideas in the world of conservation, the answer to all these questions is 'no'. It is felt that building a stage set is dishonest, and rebuilding something that no longer exists is labelled a lie against history. Where does this predilection for honesty originate? And why do people prefer modern architecture to the reconstruction of what has been lost? Perhaps we are witnessing the legacy of Functionalism here, a movement that denounced the building of pseudo-architecture. Functionalism originated in Romanticism, when architects turned their backs on academic formalism and strove to invent a new, rational form of building. This romantic hunger for honesty was adopted by the conservationists, giving rise to a new respect for the authentic art work and a rejection of historicist restorations. Among conservationists too, distaste arose for the cultivation of a harmonious urban image, because an urban image that is maintained artificially 'old' was seen as a form of fraud.
    Description: Mag de monumentenzorg steun verlenen aan de reconstructie van de oude geveltjes wanneer daarachter vrijwel alles modern is? Moet de monumentenzorg alleen nog de voorgevel willen beschermen, als de rest van het monument is verdwenen? Volgens de gangbare opvattingen in de wereld van de monumentenzorg past op al dit soort vragen een negatief antwoord. Men vindt decorbouw oneerlijk, en iets herbouwen wat er niet meer is, noemt men een leugen tegen de geschiedenis. De vraag is waar deze hang naar oprechtheid vandaan komt. Misschien zien we hier de erfenis van het functionalisme dat bouwen van schijnarchitectuur verbood. Het functionalisme ontstond uit de Romantiek, toen architecten zich afkeerden van het academisch formalisme en een nieuwe rationele bouwkunst wilden uitvinden. Dit romantische streven naar oprechtheid werd in de monumentenzorg overgenomen. Wim Denslagen stelt dat de huidige monumentenzorg op bovengenoemde vragen ten onrechte een ontkennend antwoord geeft.

    Description: Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit ist das sowjetrussische Autorenlied, eine Gattung, die trotz der Tatsache, daß die ihr zuzurechnenden Werke gesanglich vorgetragen werden, eindeutig der Dichtung angehört. Der erste Teil (A) stellt einführend die notwendigen biographischen Daten zu den hier im Mittelpunkt stehenden Gedichtsängern und das Textmaterial im Hinblick auf seine Gattungsspezifik in aller Kürze vor. Im Rahmen des eher literatursoziologisch orientierten zweiten Teils (B) wird die Stellung des Autorenlieds innerhalb der sowjetischen Kultur beschrieben, unter Akzentuierung der Zusammenhänge zwischen der Entstehung dieser Gattung und den sehr speziellen kulturellen Bedingungen in der Sowjetunion der späten 50er Jahre.

    Description: Das früheste Zeugnis der slavischen christlichen Literatur ist in drei Handschriften überliefert, die in der deutschen Slavistik unter dem Namen Freisinger Denkmäler (Fris) bekannt sind. Es handelt sich um zwei Beichtgebete, Freising I und Freising III, und um eine Bußpredigt, Freising II, die in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung die Bezeichnung "Adhortatio ad poenitentiam" erhalten hat. In einer systematischen Untersuchung des christlich-religiösen Wortschatzes der Freisinger Denkmäler, die man trotz erheblicher Unterschiede als eine Einheit betrachtet, soll gezeigt werden, mit welchen Mitteln und welchem Einfluß die sprachliche Aufnahme des christlichen Gedankengutes erfolgte.

    Description: Die sprachlichen und stilistischen Schwierigkeiten bei der Lektüre von "Der traurige Detektiv" offenbaren sich darin, dass sowohl die Figuren, als auch die Autorenspräche viele und mannigfaltige Nuancen zeigen, für deren Aufdeckung manchmal sogar die größeren Wörterbücher der russischen Sprache nicht ausreichend sind. Das vorliegende Buch hat zum Teil auch einen "linguistisch-landeskundlichen" Charakter, insbesondere bei Begriffen, die durch die russische und sowjetische Geschichte und gegenwärtige Gesellschaftsordnung geprägt sind, Begriffen, die in der deutschen Sprache und Realität keine direkten Entsprechungen aufweisen.

    Reconciliation and Architectures of Commitment: Sequencing peace in Bougainville (2021)

    Description: Following a bloody civil war, peace consolidated slowly and sequentially in Bougainville. That sequence was of both a top-down architecture of credible commitment in a formal peace process and layer upon layer of bottom-up reconciliation. Reconciliation was based on indigenous traditions of peacemaking. It also drew on Christian traditions of reconciliation, on training in restorative justice principles and on innovation in womens’ peacebuilding. Peacekeepers opened safe spaces for reconciliation, but it was locals who shaped and owned the peace. There is much to learn from this distinctively indigenous peace architecture. It is a far cry from the norms of a ‘liberal peace’ or a ‘realist peace’. The authors describe it as a hybrid ‘restorative peace’ in which ‘mothers of the land’ and then male combatants linked arms in creative ways. A danger to Bougainville’s peace is weakness of international commitment to honour the result of a forthcoming independence referendum that is one central plank of the peace deal.

    Description: Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen (1367-1398) behoort tot de vroege 'Moderne Devotie'. Zo noemde zich de beweging van 'vernieuwde innigheid' die rond 1375 in Deventer onder inspiratie van Geert Grote en Florens Radewijns ontstond. Zij ontwikkelden een hervormingsprogramma, waarin de geestelijke omvorming van de mens centraal stond. Als broeder van het gemene leven speelde Gerard Zerbolt hierin een prominente rol. Hij gaf leiding aan een intensieve boekproductie, ijverde voor kerkelijke erkenning van de broederschap en maakte zich haar charisma eigen. Zo schreef hij twee toonaangevende handboeken voor de geestelijke weg. Meer dan Grote en Radewijns legde Gerard Zerbolt de grondslag voor een eigen spiritualiteit van de Moderne Devotie. De spiritualibus ascensionibus was nog niet in modern Nederlands vertaald. Reeds de Middelnederlandse vertaling droeg de titel Geestelijke opklimmingen. Dit boek beschrijft de weg van de mens, die uit de ongelijkenis met zijn Schepper wil terugkeren tot de oorspronkelijke gelijkenis. Tegenover de ondeugden die mensen kunnen bezielen, plaatst Gerard Zerbolt als tegenkrachten de deugden. Zijn geschrift bevat alle elementen om ook ons als mensen van deze tijd te helpen tot een nieuw mensbeeld en een nieuwe visie op de samenleving te komen.
