Description: Organized through the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the symposium “Lascaux and Preservation Issues in Subterranean Environments” was held in Paris on February 26 and 27, 2009 under the chairmanship of Jean Clottes. It brought together nearly three hundred participants from seventeen countries with the goal of confronting research and interventions conducted in Lascaux Cave since 2001 with the experiences gained in other countries in the domain of preservation in subterranean environments. Twelve presentations addressed questions related to disciplines such as hydrogeology, climatology and microbiology in relation to the protection and valorization of decorated caves. The talks were followed by debates allowing the experts and all other participants to freely express themselves. This volume, which constitutes the proceedings of this symposium, is composed of the studies presented during the sessions and full transcriptions of the debates. It provides both a synthesis of the conservation activities realized at Lascaux between 2001 and 2009 and the state of research and the conditions of the cave as of 2009.

Description: This work presents the findings of research conducted from 1988 to 1993 near the étang de Berre. On the basis of systematic surveying, soundings and the excavation of a Gallo - Roman establishment,F Trément situates the major sites of Saint-Blaise and the Fossæ Marianæ in a globally and dynamically perceived space. Using earth and life sciences (geomorphology, sedimentology, palynology…). and with recourse to texts and iconography, the archaeologist broadens his focus, to encompass the landscape in its entirety. This microregion is characterised by numerous closed depressions, which explain the high population density during the Neolithic, the Iron Age and in Antiquity, and constitute sedimentary records of the evolution of the surroundings. The author seeks to understand how the successive waterside communities adapted to this shifting and harsh environment, how they appropriated the space and set about exploiting it, more or less consciously, leaving their mark, more or less enduring.

Description: The results of the excavation, undertaken in Nîmes from 1966 to 1992, of the sites of the Marseillaise, the Villégiales des Bénédictins, the Hesperides and the Fontaine des Bénédictins, make it possible to follow the evolution of the Bénédictins district from the neolithic to the present day. Near a pre-roman oppidum, on the slopes of mount Cavalier, this area was occupied from the end of the sixth century BC, later finding itself at the heart of the old town after construction of the atywall during Augustus reign. No longer an urban area from the second century AD onwards, it remained rural until the eighteenth century.Organised according to a framework which respected the relief, with both water supply system and drainage, this district contained a group of houses whose plans, construction details, decoration and domestic finds are studied both individually and from a socio-economic point of view.

Description: Three Upper Palaeolithic sites have been discovered during the construction of the A5 motorway between Melun and Troyes.Marolles-sur-Seine, in the Seine-et-Mame area, is related to the other Magdaleman sites discovered in the Paris basin. The excellent preservation of the finds (silex, animal bones, heated stones) has made possible a palaeoethnological study of this horse hunting site, a type of research rarely possible in a rescue excavation Technological analysis of the lithic from Lailly (Aungnacian), in the Yonne area, and Fontvannes (Perigordian ?), in the Aube area, has revealed the production techniques for three kinds of artefacts blades, flakes and bladelets. These two sites increase the importance of the Vanne valley in the understanding of occupation of the south east of the Paris basin.Following the publication about the Middle Palaeolithic sites of the Sens area (dAf number 47), this volume renews the study of early Prehistory in this region

Description: Archaeological research carried out in Lyon since 1971 at three major sites, the cathedral complex and the churches and graveyards of Saint-Just and Saint-Laurent-de-Choulans, has changed our understanding of the topography of the town during the early Christian period. Lyon, federal capital of the Cauls and later capital of the Burgundian kings. was from the IVth to VIIIth centuries an ecclesiastical centre of prime importance. The remains oftwo churches and of a baptistery forming an épiscopal group (one of the first to be completely excavated). the basilicas built on the tombs of saints and the graveyards, are evidence of the creation of a new Christian architecture, respecting antique traditions, and of the Christianisation of funerary practices. Thorough analysis of the archaeological evidence, confronted with archivai sources and documents, confirms the vitality and prestige of Lugdunum christianum.

Description: From 1995 to 1997, four early medieval sites were excavated in the Fougères region as part of archaeological research work carried out prior to the construction of the A84 motarway. As the sites all date from the same period, a comprehensive research plan was implemented from the outset, with special emphasis on paleo-environmental analysis and examination of pottery finds. Examination of the three Carolingian settlement sites, as well as a ford from the same period, reveals an organised, interactive approach to environmental management of the surrounding lands (land division, ditch Systems. tracks, development of a peatcovered valley floor), which were developed and systematically exploited from the 7th to 10th century. The present volume provides a significant contribution to our understanding of early medieval rural settlements in Brittany, an area of study which has hitherto received little attention from archaeologists The research is enhanced by an analysis of bio-archaeological data from the sites, showing the impact of agro-pastoral activities on the landscape and vegetation in nearby areas.

Description: Vestiges of Gallo-Roman workshops that were in activity between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD in the city of Augustodunum were found in the course of work carried out at the Lycée militaire in Autun. The workshop buildings are described in detail and situated in their urban setting. The different crafts activities are studied closely: metalworking with copper and iron alloys, ceramics, crafts of bone. This work has enhanced our knowledge of the chain of production in metallurgical crafts in particular. Fresh data on the manufacture of common objects such as brass fibulae and bells of bronze coated iron sheet is obtained from the analysis of mould fragments, of furnace remains and of forge slag and waste. Crafts emerge as a major feature of the economy in the city of the Aedui, according to processes already identified at Bibracte. The rich documentation of this work constitutes a significant contribution to research on crafts in ancient times.

Description: This study gives an account of the results of the archaeological excavations of the Gallo-Roman village at Roanne (Rodumna). The research is based mainly on 22 assemblages of material dating from the 1st century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D., including glassware, iron and bronze objects, and above all an exceptional corpus of pottery. Detailed analysis of the pottery and its relationship with the rest of the material enabled a chronology to be established. Using criteria such as frequency, use, variety of pottery production, datation, origins, etc., this chronology was found to be in continuity with previously studied Gaulish horizons. A series of illustrations places the material within the context of its discovery. The results of this study lead to an outline of the economic development of Rodumna - a small, rural town, built of clay and wood, very much in keeping with Gaulish tradition. This new volume in the dAf collection continues the study of the Gaulish occupations of Roanne begun in the recently published dAf 62. These two volumes, along with the publication on Feurs (dAf 14), constitute an exceptional documentation about the antique Segusiavi region.

Description: Between 1987 and 1995, rescue excavations were carried out on three Late Bronze Age / Early Iron Age cremation burial cemeteries in the Castres area of the Tarn region (Gourjade and Le Martinet near Castres, Le Causse at Labruguière). These vast funerary complexes, containing more than 1,200 burials, were considered to form an indivisible whole and as such were listed as sites of national importance in 1995. Study of archaeological finds from the sites, comprised of almost 5,300 vessels and some 1,300 metal objects, has led to developing a simple common typology similar to those defined for cemeteries in the western lower Languedoc region. Typological characteristics are examined in detail and presented in conjunction with distribution maps. A detailed study of funerary architecture and deposit distribution, using the same approach as the spatial analysis, is presented in the following chapter. These observations provide the basis for suggestions concerning the chronological sequencing of the burials. The resulting seriation conclusively demonstrates the presence of five groups, thus shedding light on the evolution of material culture and funerary assemblages in the Castres cemeteries over more than three centuries (from the 9th to the first half of the 6th c BCE) and indicating that significant changes took place during the Bronze Age / Iron Age transition period. The study of topographical evolution points to logical patterns of development which were concentric at Causse and Goujade and linear at Martinet. Anthropological analysis, which is based on a remarkable sample comprised of more than 1,200 bone assemblages, unique in France for this period, has provided information on selection within the cemeteries and on changes in deposits and their constituents. A chapter is also given over to animal remains which are both numerous and varied, particularly at Causse. The study demonstrates changes in both the quantity and the qua lit y of meat offerings over time and provides a pertinent view of this practice. The paleosociological analysis which follows adopts a classical approach in which ail parameters are taken into consideration. The results indicate that deposits are relatively uniform and point to a degree of social levelling within the communities. The final chapter considers the cemeteries cultural identity and their regional connections. Study of available documentation over a wide area, extending from Provence to Aquitaine, demonstrates strong links with Mediterranean groups, primarily those from the western lower Languedoc area. The studies and syntheses are based upon abundant documentary evidence which is presented in its entirety in the second and third volumes.

Description: An OverView is presented here of the studies conducted at this prestigious site, where as a rural, then an urban space developed. the traces left by humankind from prehistoric times to the 19th century have accumulated. The trenches and material of farmers of Neolithic and protohistoric times gave way to a silt quarry, then to the plots of land in a suburbium outside of Lutetia, still present in the 9th century. A 14th century manor house, decorated with mural paintings, preceded the city’s encroachment on this area, seen in the Charles V city wall and the neighbouring faubourg, while the tile Works continued to be active for three centuries. In the 16th century the site was drastically altered by the construction of the Tuileries castle and the Jardin Neuf. Interpretation of the numerous vestiges, supported by palaeoenvironmental studies and archival documents, provides new and sometimes unexpected data on land use before urbanisation, on the social status of the inhabitants, on the fate of renowned edifices. This book tells a story. "the story of a small piece of Paris", one of the great seats of the history of France. In the heart of Paris, the Grand Louvre project led to urban excavation on an exceptional scale. This archaeofogical operation was a model of its kind, both by the nature of its findings and its state-of-the-art exploration strategies.

Description: This work introduces the initial results of research at sites occupied by Native Americans in the Sinnamary basin (1660-220 BP), carried ont at the time of the construction of the Petit Saut dam by Electricité de France in French Guyana. A methodological approach pertaining to the tropical sylvan and riparian milieu is followed by a study of the open-air sites, and a commentary focusing on the phenomenon of terra preta and palaeolithic fires. For the first time a typological tramework and a vocabulary are proposed for reference to lithic senes and polishing-tool sites. This work also includes a study of ceramics using two complementary approaches: determination of place of manufacture based on the Chemical make-up of the pestes employed, and codification of the forms and motifs of the 22,000 objects registered. Following up on the publication devoted to the colonial period in this region (dAf 60), this volume makes a signifiant contribution to the renewal of histonographical work on the Guyana plateau.

Description: The Château de Gréoux-les-Bains was built in the heart of Provence on a site which had been used from early Roman times for its hot springs. The castle’s powerful outline dominates the village whose organisation and architecture has preserved evidence of its development from the Middle Ages to the modern period. In the present work, Sandrine Claude combines analysis of archival sources, selected excavation data and standing remains - making particular use of building archeology - to determine the origins and ambitions that presided over the building of a castle whose size is disproportionate to its geographical and human context. The castle’s little known history and its architectural development are thus retraced and the monument placed in its human environment, that of its commissioners and successive owners.

Description: This richly illustrated monograph the result of exhaustive documentary research, offers a detailed and standardised critical inventory of Late Bronze Age to fifth century BC funerary assemblages discovered in the Grands Gausses region of France. The work brings together data from excavations carried out since the nineteenth century, presenting a corpus of 240 funerary deposits whose surviving anthropological, faunal and archaeological finds have been completely re-examined. Particular attention is given to the human remains. Seen in relation to hypotheses suggested by historical and ethnological comparisons, this study of funerary practices in the pre-literate world provides insights into organisational structures and social hierarchies, shedding new light on collective notions of death and the after-life.

Description: Under the direction of H. Kértbel, excavation on the site of Fanum Martis. present-day Corseul, has gradually revealed a vast trading and crafts centre within the archaeological protection area of Monterfil II. Uncovering a surface area of over 5000 m2 along the major axis of the former Coriosolati capital has enabled archaeologists to discern architectural and topographical changes which took place in this quarter from 15/10 BCE to the 4th century CE. The finds, which include a high proportion of Italian potters’ marks and Lipari amphorae, attest to the significance ot the town as a marketplace for items produced throughout the Mediterranean Basin. A metrological analysis of the remains, earned out by an archaeologist trained in architecture, has served as the basis for a reconstruction of elevations governed by the Tuscan order. Although there is still much work to be done in Corseul. the excavation carried out thus far at Monterfil II has shown how the urban layout and public and private domains were established during the reign of Augustus.

Description: Discovered in 1973, the Port Berteau wreck lies at a depth of 7 metres in the Charente river below Samtes. Excavations (1992-1997) were carried out with the dual objective of studying both the hull’s remains and its natural environment.Using the traditional techniques of ship archaeology to examine the wreck from the stem to the stern-post has enabled archaeologists to draw an ‘architectural portrait" of an early 7th century coaster. The 14.30 metre carvel built "frame-first" boat was intended for river navigation and built to carry a cargo of up to ten tonnes. Using what could be called a naval archaeology approach, researchers have analysed the nver environment to reconstruct the natural landscape of the period. The Port Berteau II coaster thus provides a reference for carvel construction history in the Ponant, reviously attested only in 15th century texts.

Description: The construction of the dam at Petit Saut by Électricité de France in the French Guyane gave place to an important archaeological rescue operation. Carried out from 1990 to 1995, this was the largest ever programme for an overseas French department of which the history was scarcely known. This volume represents the results of these researches in the Sinnamary river basin for the last four centuries of our millenium. Based on archives, travellers tales, old maps and archaeological work, this study brings new elements to the history of this part of South America : the formation of the colony during the 17th and 18th centuries, its settlement, its economy and material culture. With the development of gold production from the 19th century, the Guyane appears to be another California. The jail at Saut Tigre was created in 1933 for Indochinese prisoners who worked on development projects in the Inini territory up until 1944. This work contains an important dictionary of place-names which constitutes a documentary source without precedent. A second volume will soon be consecrated to the Amerindian sites discovered during the same operation.

Description: Construction work on the TGV Nord railway discovered the exceptional gaulish site of Montmartin/La Fosse Muette. A rich aristocratic dwelling was uncovered and the abundance of small finds shows the diversity of the craft activities (metal working, pottery production...). In addition, a public and religious space was observed, composed of a small temple, similar to the famous site of Gournay-sur-Aronde, along with an attached public square or meeting place. This represents a first-rate document for the religious practices (notably for the treatment of corpses) and the gaulish warrior society, that of the equites described by Caesar.

Description: Archaeological prospection by test trenches covering about fort Y hectares of a future gravel pit and archaeological excavations of about 15 hectares, conducted between 1989 and 1994, allowed a study of human occupation, settlement history and landscape change from the Neolithic to the Roman times. The study area covers an exceptionally large surface situated in the Holocene river plain of the Moselle valley near Crévéchamps, Meurthe-et-Moselle. With about 7000 recorded archaeological features, Marie-Pierre Koenig and her team followed a rigorous methodology to determine how, overt wo millennia, humans settled and lived in a landscape and settlement micro-region impacted by the shifting course of the Moselle river. The scientific approach comprises the grouping of the archaeological features according to their function, a typological analysis of them and the study of their setting in the former landscape, reconstructed by means of different environmental analyses. Due to a remarkable study of the Bronze and Iron pottery, supported by comparisons with numerous sites of Northwestern Europe, the authors suggest an evolutionary scheme of the settlement and its history. This approach is already considered to be a major reference for settlement archaeology. The first land clearing began during Neolithic times. During the following Bronze and Iron Age, settlement density increased. Palisades, roads and trenches followed the natural delimitations formed by the ancient river channels, while agricultural activities on the gravel domes in the alluvial river plain were moved cyclically. Later, the Gallo-Roman population drained and parcelized the land. Farms continued to exist, with Gallic traditions persisted, but human activities became more diverse with the opening of a large clay-pit -until a flood in the 2nd century AD led the occupants to abandon this excessively humid zone. The scientific results are enriched by a meticulous iconography and ample documentation: pottery catalogue, building descriptions, results of 14C datings, an index of the features, general maps and an index locorum. Chapter summaries given in English and German provide international readers with quick access to the main results.

Description: Established where the Île-de-France region meets Normandy, the rural sanctuary in Bennecourt was occupied from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD. Excavations camed out from 1982 to 1988 have revealed the gradual progression from a Gallic enclosure housing a small building on pillars, to a vast peribolus surrounding three stone temples A set of secondary features and an abundant collection of artefacts (close to 25,000 objects and fragments) have been preserved, making this a reference site for northern Gaul. After a detailed study of the structures and the artefacts, the author Luc Bourgeois presents an overview that suggests some directions tor research on Celtic cult structures and their evolution in Gallo-Roman era : a nuanced approach to architectural filiation, aspects of sacrificial cooking and the place occupled by this type of site in a regional framework

Description: The studies compiled here all pertain to the same area, located between the Charente river valley and the Saintonge marshlands, a perpetually shifting and inhospitable setting that constitutes a privileged held of study for grasping the numerous and complex interactions between the human populations and their natural environment A seaside site and a plains site were excavated at the time of a motorway construction protect (the A 837 between Saintes and Rochefort), and the vestiges found illustrate the diversity of settlement and uses of these lands. In La Challonnière a saltworks (4th-3rd century BC) was uncovered and its activities retraced m detail, as well as an early Middle Ages settlement and its ceramic artefacts typical of Saintonge workshops. In Mortantambe a small rural homestead (2nd-7st century BO was examined along with the evidence of its economy (farming, hunting fishing metal working. J. and structures and graves attesting occupation from the 8th to the 9th century In parallel, the progression of the filling-in of the estuary was retraced by means of multidisciplinary analysis of deep sondages These studies make a fundamental contribution to the history of the settlement and the countryside in the Rochefort hinterland.

Description: This book provides a synthesis of the archeological research carried out in the town of Roanne (Loire) It was the site of a small Roman town whose name on the Peutinger Table and in Ptolomey is recorded as Rodumna and whose Gallic origin has been recognised since the 1950s. The small agglomeration of the late Iron Age became a maior centre of population in the Gallo roman civitas ot the SegusiaviThe work includes a detailed catalogue of the finds which can act as a basis for comparisons with other sites in central Gaul. The evolution of the settlement area from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC is described in detail. The study of the linds shows an important analysis of then evolution and the different stages of development in what was a crucial period for the history of Gaul culminating in the « romanization ». The discoveries also allow an interpretation of several aspects of daily life : the domestic architecture, diet industries, trade… Based on the material culture, these studies allow us to deal with certain aspects of the economy and to describe the material culture of theSegusiavi within the regional context. This volume is followed by another monograph in the Daf series on the Gallo-Raman occupation.

Description: This volume is one of the first scientific publications devoted to the archaeological research covering Bronze Age occupation (20th-14th centuries BC) carried out during the construction of the northern ring road around the city of Lyon. It has been possible interpret the vestiges discovered as belonging to rural centresorclusters of dwellings established at a site on the Bank of the valley. The sets of objects studied, primarily ceramics, have come to constitute a valuable reference resource for the Lyon region. They testify to a composite cultural profile for the early Bronze Age. combining northern and southern characteristics, while the Bell Beaker cultural background subsists. During the late Bronze I period, however. the southern features give way to influences of the Jura and Burgundian regions and those derived from the north-western façade of the Alps. Palaeo-environmental studies conducted in conjunction with the archaeological work provide the basis for an investigation of the landscape during the Bronze Age and the foundation of the populations’ subsistence economy, in keeping with the basic outlines established for the temperate regions of Western Europe.

Description: Souterrains have in the past been the object of both varied and fanciful interpretations. Considered at different times to be places of refuge or worship, they have been attribued to periods ranging from pre-history to the French Revolution. The present study, first written as a doctoral thesis, examines94 souterrains in the Limousin region and analyses their geographical and historical significance. Research has included excavation of the Bois-du-Mont souterrain at Bessines-sur-Gartempe in the Haute-Vienne department. The result of the study proves that these underground chambers are related to rural settlement during IXth to XIIIth centuries. Archaeology provides firm evidence for when these structures were tunnelled, occupied and abandoned. The disciplined methodological approach of this work is exemplary in a field where scientific analysis has so far been virtually non-existent.

Five successive phases of occupation have been excavated, covering a period of 40.000 years Study of the site has revealed fondamental data lot our understanding of human occupation, as well as important informations on environmental changes to the site during the final glacial period (from the Eemian Interglacial to the lower Weichselian Pleniglacial). Distribution of finds at Bettencourt, coupled with the technology and typology of the site’s lithic industries, point to a continuity in systems of production and cultural traditions from 112,000 to 68,000 BP.

Description: Relay-point on a roman road, the oppidum of Ambrussum is a major site concerning conditions and aspects of the romanisation in the region of Nîmes. Two houses with internal courtyards were already known and dated from the first century AD and form an insula of secteur I. Research conducted from 1976 to 1980 in secteur IV revealed a house of the same type with its dependancies. Following an analysis based on the conditions of implantation, occupation and abandonment, their architecture and distribution of the finds, these constructions appear to be an original expression of gallo-roman habitations. Situated in their local and regional contexts, they reflect the process of urbanisation and social differenciation, and of the village type exploitation existence.

In 1987 re-excavation took place and comprised the reexamination of conserved standing stratification. This re-examination permitted the identification of two human occupation levels, both of short periods, situated in a cool environment at the end of the Middle Pleistocene. With the identification of a new lithic industry. the discovery of the largest quantity of Tahr Rissien remains in Europe belonging to a new species, and the determination of new sub-species of Rodents and Rabbit, this site is now to be placed amongst those of major importance for the Mediterranean Europe, which is further increased by the presence of a human remain.

Description: In the 1980s and early 1990s, the municipalities of Mondeville, Grentheville, Cormelles-le-Royal and Giberville in the Calvados area of Normandy were the focus for a vast campaign of "préventive" (rescue) archeology. A few years after the close of the excavations, a considerable body of findings has amassed. By allowing us to consider areas several hundred hectares in extent, the research presented in the present volume paves the way for a full-scale approach to territorial archeology, from the emergence of the first farming communities to the metalworkers of the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age — a period of almost 5,000 years. We can observe the inhabitants settling, evolving slowly and progressively shaping the occupation of the plateau. By highlighting the relationships between Normandy and Brittany, the Paris Basin and the British Isles, the study enhances our understanding of the development and diffusion of the various regional cultures and sheds light on the pre- and protohistory of this part of the Caen Plain.

Description: Construction of the northern TGV line resulted in the rescue excavation of Riencourt-lès-Bapaume. For the first time, it was possible in excavate a Middle Palaeolithic open air site on an area of 10,000 m2. The preliminary contributions brought together in this volume represent analysis completed on short notice using samples drawn from abundant lithic material (approximately 86,000 pieces). The archaeological levels dispersed in the lœssic sequence of the first part of the last glacial, have yielded lithic artifacts which can be assigned to many industries which illustrate the complexity of the Middle Paleolithic. The lithic assemblage of level CA demonstrates the presence of the production of Levallois flakes and another for the production of blades. The functional analysis have shown that both flake and blade reduction technologies are associated with the specific tool functions.

Description: The Seine-Yonne sector occupies a special place in our knowledge of Neolithic societies. Although an interface between the southern and north-eastem branches, it is also the exclusive preserve of chalk flint. Applying the "technological system" concept, the author seeks to identify the skills levels of the flint knappers, asks whether expert knappers existed, and explores the spatial breakdown of the operational chain and the methods of acquiring and distributing raw materials in order to address the question of the socio-economic organization of flint tool production. Her exploration is based on the study of twelve reference series comprising over 100.000 flint artifacts in a multivariate analysis making use, among other approaches, of cladistics, the first time this technique has ever been applied to this field. By systematically referring to anthropological and historical questions, this book constitutes an important contribution to the study of the development of Neolithic communities across Europe.

Description: In this work, Dominique Sordoillet accomplishes the difficult task of rendering a previously obscure discipline accessible to everyone. This work originates from her doctoral dissertation thesis, which received unanimous praise for its methodological and scientific rigor. Drawing on elements from the earth sciences, she studied the stratigraphy of three exemplary archaeological sites. The prehistoric sites of Gardon, Montou and Saint-Alban were thus subject to a precise micromorphological analysis, which considers a stratigraphy as a sedimentary record of time. Through a classification of the deposits into two large families based on their formation processes, she distinguishes the occupation facies, created by human activities, from the abandonment facies, which are characteristic of natural sedimentary and post-sedimentary processes. Based on these sedimentological data, replaced in their chronological and cultural contexts, she proposes different occupation scenarios and interpretations of the evolution of human activities, rituals and construction. This short, well illustrated presentation is written with a simple vocabulary and includes a glossary, all of which make it an effective tool for understanding the methods and objectives of micromorphology in the direct interest of field interpretations and methods.

The study includes an examination of the finds, most of which are of 6th century date, and an analysis of the faunal remains. The latter shows not only that domesticated species differed from those of the Iron-Age but also that eating habits had changed. The resulting picture is one of significant and long-lasting Romanisation of innerCorsica, and of ongoing trade relations with the rest of the Mediterranean region, even after the Vandal invasion. The publication marks a major step towards a new understanding of this period of Corsican history.

Description: The plan to extend the TGV high-speed rail link from Lyon to Marseille was a major scientific challenge, comprising 300 km of transect through archeologically highly-sensitive areas and notably the Rhone corridor — a key western European trunk route since prehistoric times. A rescue operation unprecedented in terms of its size and complexity was initiated to take up the challenge and in this volume, Odile Maufras presents the results of the campaign covering the medieval period. No less than 14 separate digs focused on sites of non-village rural occupation from the seventh to the fifteenth centuries. The sites are first described in a series of concise monographs whose standardized layout will help readers easily find their way. The second part studies key environmental aspects, material culture and cultural practices in a series of well-documented and presented overviews and analytical articles. The work throws new light on the sort of isolated habitats which are generally so difficult to pinpoint and updates the geographical and environmental picture of the central Rhone valley. It returns to the question of a break between late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, while at the same time refining our knowledge of organizational development in the countryside.

Description: One of the large international and interdisciplinary research projects on the Palaeolithic of France during the middle of the 20th century was the excavation of the abri Pataud (Les Eyzies, Dordogne). From this project, directed by Hallam L. Movius, Jr., came innovations in excavation technique and artifact analysis that have contributed to the methodological synthesis underlying current research. The abri Pataud is one of the key sequences of the earlier Upper Palaeolithic in the Southwest. The publication began in 1975 but was left unfinished because of the death of Pr Movius in 1987. His closest collaborators have summarized here the results of the project, including unpublished studies of the Protomagdalenian, Middle Perigordian, and Aurignacian occupations, new radiocarbon dates, a reappraisal of the geochronology, and an extensively annotated catalogue of Aurignacian and Perigordian sites in Dordogne which allows the abri Pataud to be seen in its regional context.

Description: Zum ersten Mal ist in diesem Buch Gustave Flauberts Légende de saint Julien l’hospitalier mit den Illustrationen Franz Marcs zusammengebracht.

Description: In advance of the construction of an underground parking lot on the edge of the Saint-Georges quarter in the city of Lyon, on the right bank of the Saône, a team of Inrap archaeologists conducted an excavation between 2002 and 2004 with the goal of reconstructing the nature of the human installation from the beginning of Antiquity. Strongly supported by previous research and enriched by several complementary disciplines, the long and complex preventive excavation of the Parc Saint-Georges provided an opportunity to reconstruct the history of a riverbank with a difficult natural topography, which was gradually liberated from the river course, while not completely breaking from its influence. At this site, we find key evidence for the genesis of the formation of the alluvial plain of Lyon. At the end of the Protohistoric period, this was the location of the confluence of the original Rhone and Saône rivers, and then that of the new course of the Saône. The vitality of the fluvial network and port activities at Lugdunum are clearly illustrated by the discovery of a pier in association with a ferry dated to the end of the 1st century ad, and five heavy-tonnage barges dated to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. After a period of decreased occupation during the Early Middle Ages, the sector was progressively urbanized starting in the 12th century. At the center of the excavation, a zone with no construction was to be the future site of the port of Sablet. In the 16th century, this fluvial port was well established within the urban framework of the quarter. Seven fishwell boats provide evidence of commercial fishing activities. Significant changes were made in the second half of the 17th century in order to create a monumental port. A boat, which perhaps served for the transport of heavy merchandise, is dated to the middle of the 18th century. Until the end of the 19th century, the construction of the Fulchiron quay deprived the sector of direct access to the river, the bank was modified to accommodate the fluvial port of the quarter, and the environment was composed of "waterfront" houses. The significant historical data presented in this publication, obtained through a thorough exploitation of the information contributed by this excavation, represents a decisive advance in archaeological research, allowing a reconstruction of the early evolution of a major fluvial zone of the city of Lyon.

Description: Fine Middle Palaeolithic sites between Montereau (Seine-et-Marne) and Troyes (Aube) were excavated over large areas during the construction of the A5 motorway : these researches have allowed a renewed approach to this type of open-air deposit. the detailed analysis of the stratified lithic material and the pedo-seditnentary phases have supported the chronostratigraphical attributions : the successions of archaeological levels lie between 200 000 and 40 000 years B.C. The Micoquian industry is recognised at Vinneufl/Les Hauts Massous (Yonne) whilst the Mousterian industries carry on on the sites of the Vanne valley (Aube). This volume constitutes the first survey of the Middle Palaeolithic occupation of this part of the Paris basin, placed in its geological context.

Description: The Aubrac plateau and its foothills have been studied by a multi-disciplinary team of archaeologists, historians, ethnologists and environmentalists. This research has shown that the region, despite its reputation as a hostile environment for humans, has a surprisingly rich archaeological potential. Numerous written documents and an exceptionally well preserved environment allowed the spatiotemporal framework of this research to be defined. This work shows how the Domerie (hospital) of Aubrac, which amassed numerous pasturelands, fossilized the habitat since the High Middle Ages. It presents the forms of agropastoral habitats that existed during the 11th to 13th centuries, which is one of the major themes of this study. Through the study of permanent (was) and temporary (buron) agricultural exploitation sites, located between 1100 and 1300 m altitude, it contributes to our knowledge of a rural mountain society during the Middle Ages.

Description: The paintings discovered during excavation of this villa in the Limousin constitue a unicum in the context of the residential architecture of Roman Gaul. The most interesting of them commemorate a performance in the amphitheatre (figures of gladiators and venatores, scenes showing the spectators and the pompa witch opens the minus) and give the name of the benefactor, Romulus, owner of the villa, whose munificence has provided the performance. The study is completed by a history of the main dwelling-house through the successive transformations of this ground-plan and décor. This publication provides an exceptionally valuable illustration of the life and behavior of local Gallo-Roman notables during the IInd century AD

Description: This volume presents important results not only for archaeology in Provence but also increases our knowledge of the Mediterranean world at the very begining of the Middle Ages. The recent excavations of Saint-Blaise oppidum, near the Rhône delta, have brought to light the different stages of the reoccupation, from the 5th to the 7th century, of this protohistoric site. The ceramic assemblage testifies the importance of trade: red slip wares, amphorae, grey coarse wares from North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and Liguria, regional slip wares (DS.P.), etc. The discovery of glass-ware with christian motifs and of vitrified crucibles indicates the existence of glass-working; stone, bone and metal objects, the coins, the fauna, especially the abundant remains of shellfish consumed, enrich the image of the life on this oppidum, one of the most important in Provence during this period of crisis and of change.

Description: The excavations carried out on the lines of the A28 an A29 motorways have brought to light two sites from the Middle Palacolithic (-300 000 - -30 000). The desposits at Pucheuil and at Etoutteville (Haute-Normandie) yielded important lithic series with numerous reassemblies of waste flakes. At Pucheuil, two human occupations were observed in the context of a doline. They ear individualized by their particular technological traditions which both stem from the santé chain of production : the Levallois technique. This, in association with a volumetric conception of the nucleus which resembles those of the Upper Palaeolithic, characterises the laminar production of Etoutteville. The spatial analysis of the reassembled groups of material identify the site as a knapping workshop. These results, complemented by a presentation of the geomorphological and stratigraphical frameworks, represent a solid contribution to our knowledge of the Prehistory of north-west Europe.

Description: Im Juni 1937 eröffnete Jacob Zeitlin in seiner Buchladen-Galerie in Los Angeles eine Ausstellung mit Grafiken von Käthe Kollwitz.

Description: For about ten years numerous studies have been carried out in France about roman lamps. This one, for the first time and for a masters’ degree research, is oriented toward the systematic study of productions from several potters’ workshops in Montans (Tarn), ail from welldated archaeological context. More than a simple descriptive inventory, the author gives us a chronology of the Ist and IInd centuries. Her analysis of three associated criteria (decoration/type/sig nature, mark), based upon the study of 900 pieces, reveals some original aspects of the potters’ practice and leads to interesting interpretations about the technique used most of the time in Montans which consists in making moulds from lamps already in use.

Description: The management of archaeological artefacts calls upon knowledge and practices originating in diverse disciplines, which Silvia Païn, a respected conservation-restoration specialist, presents here to professionals. The different situations faced while performing this work are addressed in methodological terms and in these pages professionals will find the tools necessary to develop their procedure and management system in a global manner. They will also find all of the practical advice necessary to ensure the long term conservation of remains and to guarantee their accessibility to researchers. A thorough knowledge of the material and its alteration is the foundation of the conservation procedure: Païn argues that it is essential to take into account the transformations undergone by the material while it is buried and when it is uncovered since the definition of indispensable preventive measures must be based on an informed evaluation of the risks. In effect, throughout the course of an object’s existence —from its discovery to its study— its conservation consists of interventions that are integrated within a coherent and continual process. Managing the material also implies ensuring its physical and intellectual accessibility: the reader will find useful advice on how to create an inventory and preserve the associated records, broadly understood as the link between the object, its data, the documentation generated by it and its field records. The reader will learn to how to develop material and computer-based infrastructures based on a detailed consideration of the activities of their users, while integrating the issues surrounding the optimal use of storage spaces. At the end of this work, Païn reviews the regulatory and legal obligations of rescue archaeologists, depositary personnel, owners and legal representatives. The current regulations are also presented, along with recommendations for developing or modifying those of the structure in which the artefact manager is working. In this complete and up-to-date manual, the conservation-restoration professional, artefact manager, and more broadly, archaeologists and their administrators, will find an indispensable tool for their daily practices.

Description: This volume is the first of the series “Archéologie et grands travaux”, created within the DAF series to welcome the publication of large scale rescue excavations, and in part financed by developers of projects in rural or urban situations. Discovered during excavations carried out before construction work on the northern TGV line, the site of jablines uncovered a neolithic flint mine which became the object, for the first time in France, of large scale excavation. More than 1 000 features had been located and 58 shafts completly explored. The results of these studies conducted by a pluridisplinary team are presented here in detail. Finally, the site is placed within its regional environment and compared to sites of the same type in France and the rest of Europe.

Description: Discovered during the construction of the A5 motorway, the early metalworking site of the Clérimois (Yonne) delivered the remains of some ten workshops which produced iron between the 4th century B.C. and the 5th century A. D. The published results are many: descriptions and typologies of the structures (18 furnaces studied), anthracology and analyses of the ores and slags. The study of the forges has allowed an estimation of the overall production: 5 000 tonnes of iron from 15 500 tonnes of smelted ore. Four fifths of this iron was produced between the end of the La Tène period and the 2nd century A.D. by large furnaces equipped with systems for removing the slag. These data can already be considered as a reference in the study of ancient metallurgy.

Amongst others the question, still controversial, concerning the Rubané and Cardial influences on the French Neolithic is largely discussed here. Finally several articles concerning later stages of the Neolithic, notably the Michelsberg, are presented here.

The first part analyzes the different types of construction techniques observed in military camps, placing the development of this architecture within its historical context, from the conquest of Gaul to the middle of the fifth century AD. The second part is a catalogue which, while making no claim to be exhaustive, presents all the key sites alongside other lesser-known ones, especially in France. Each well- documented and systematically well-illustrated notice is augmented by a bibliography.

Laboratory studies add to classical field data informations allowing to replace the megaliths in their environment and to demonstrate the existence of an economic system based upon exchange, ending the myth of autarky inside “the large forest”. This work also analyses modem acculturations of these monuments settled in an area where celtic and arthurian legend is still very much alive.

Description: Bereits das 19.

Description: Based on the author’s Master’s dissertation, this study deals with Gallo-Roman building materials made from fired clay : particular attention is paid to the firing stage in the production of these materials. The author’s inventory of 142 identified tile factories in France has enabled her to provide new information on kiln technology, to establish a typology and to propose a possible chronological sequence. Although work of this kind has been carried out in Great Britain, a similar study had not been done for France. F. Le Ny’s timely remedy to this problem casts light upon an industry which has seldom been studied. The author is currently working on a doctoral thesis in archaeological science at the University of Rennes I.

Description: Settled at the end of the XIIIth century on an unexploited land of the seignory of Mont-Saint-Jean, in Auxois, the “grange du Mont” was abandoned a hundred years later ; it did not resist to the demographic and economie recession at the end of the XIVth century, although it had been built to farm a large territory in a permanent way, as shown by the size and the quality of the structures. The archaeological excavation, the study of the archives and the ethnographic research, associated in an exemplary way, have led to the reconstitution of the structure and aims of such an agro-pastoral settiement in the Middle Age conception. This study brings new informations about a type of farming settiement poorly known until now, the “grange”, as well as about the artefacts and architecture of the rural settlements in mediaeval Burgundy.

Description: A large campaign of excavations has saved the gaulish tumulus of Courtesoult (Haute-Saône) from destruction. These researches have put into evidence two main phases of construction and use of the monument which includes 45 tombs. These have been the subject of detailed anthropological and palaeodentographical studies. The typological analysis of the small finds, mainly composed of dress items (brooches, bracelets, belt hooks, coral beads), gives a date ranging from the Hallstatt D1 to the La Tène A period. The data From Courtesoult can be put up against that of other burial sites, such as Gy, Mantoche or Savoyeux. It gives further details concerning the evolution of funeral practices from the first Iron Age in the region between the Jura and Burgundy. This area had hitherto given rise to no recent research far this period.

Description: Considered as the result of the barbarian invasions in 275 AD, four late roman town defences have been examinated here, Bordeaux, Dax, Périgueux and Bazas. The caracterstics of each one depend one depend on its past, on its role during the late roman period, on the various solutions adopted by the constructors and the date to which one can attribute the defances. However, in their general conception, the construction methods of the rampart, the details of organisation of defensive structures (positioning of towers, small number of gates, absence of ditches, abundance or rarety of reused building materials), these fortified towns do not represent individual cases but take their place within a system of defence created at different dates between the gallic empire and the end of roman domination in south-west Gaul

Description: Shirting front a systematic study of Roman amphora discovered at approximately one hundred sites in the north-east of Gaul, this research treats certain aspects of provincial economic history, regarding impart and consumption of foods under the Roman Empire in the region, which, in Antiquity, was strategically situated on an important crossroad, the joining of the Rhône corridor with the "Germanic limes". The original aspects are tested through the analysis of the morphology, epigraphy and macroscopic description of the clay material of these recipients. The observation of the differences in distribution helps us to understand the directions of economic currents over lime and specific consumer habits whether in urban or rural areas.

Description: This work, which summarises the author’s doctoral dissertation, presents an original approach to the study of lamps from the Early Roman Empire. Using a method more often applied to the study of samian pottery, the author has carried out a systematic analysis of the associations of signature, form and decoration. The purpose of the study was to verify a hypothesis, that characteristic types could be associated with a spécifie potter’s signature, and, at the same time, to identify actual workshops. The research is successful not only in demonstrating the existence of significant connections between several potters, but also in questioning the uncritical use, still frequently made, of chronoiogical typologies. The author argues for setting up reference corpora of makers stamps and decorative marks and for cataloguing characteristic forms, thus enabling the lamp to play a significant rôle in the archaeological evidence, as well as bringing to light a new craft.

Description: What is known about the settlement sites of non-Mediterranean Gaul at the end of the Iron Age? Relatively little compared to our knowledge of contemporary sites near the Mediterranean littoral. This study, based on a regional inventory of the settlement sites of Limousin, is a contribution to filling that gap. The author considers archaeological, numismatic and historical data from Corrèze, Creuse and Haute-Vienne in relation to information from other regions of France, and proposes an analysis of Gaulish society and political structures in the immediately pre-Conquest period. The study is avowedly regionalist in perspective and offers a critique of earlier, brooder- scale models of change during this period.

Description: For the first time since the publications of A. Blanchet at the beginning of the century, about fifty french and foreigners archaeologists have reviewed research on gallo-roman pipe-day figurines, produced in moulds and commercialised from the 1st to IIIrd centuries AD. Are studied here successively: the workshops, production techniques, coroplathes, iconographical inventories, chronology, the origins and use of the figurines, their distribution in and outside France. The results of physico-chemical analysis of clays which should in the future help in the identification of the principal workshops and an expert system applied to the identification of figurine fragments are finally presented. This considerable mass of informations will for many years be a reference base.

Description: In this book Patrice Brun critically examines the "Urnfield Culture” concept and the migration model that it implies. After reexamining the Paris Basin evidence, he presents a comparative study of closed finds from outside the region As a result, the traditional interpretation is rejected. Two clear breaks are evident in the development of material culture between the 13th and 7th centuries B.C. These breaks coincide with major socio-economic changes which. Far from being restricted to the Paris Basin, affect a large part of Europe. They also coincide with the transformations that led to the emergence of urban civilisations in Greece and Italy.

Description: Two exceptionally well preserved sites were discovered in 2000 on the backshore of Baie Orientale on the island of Saint Martin, Lesser Antilles: Mesoindian camps (800 BC — 100 AD), where subsistence activities were associated with stone, shell and coral tool manufacturing, which was previously unknown for the Preceramic period, and a Early Neoindian site (740-960 AD) interpreted as a specialized satellite camp of the village of Pointe du Canonnier, thus corresponding to a territorial settlement pattern that is characteristic of this period. The innovative and original study proposed by Dominique Bonnissent sheds light on the complex lifestyle of the nomadic Preceramic populations that moved about the Caribbean Ocean. This work henceforth provides an indispensible resource for Caribbean Pre-Columbian archaeology. At the beginning of each chapter, a substantial summary with bibliographic references and figure citations allow English and Spanish speaking readers to consult the essential data and arguments.

Description: This work is the result of rescue archaeology carried out at Feurs (Loire) from 1978 to 1981. A series of excavations on the site of the Roman town revealed an earlier Gaulish settlement at its height during the late La Tène period. The discovery of evidence of pre-Roman occupation was completely unexpected since the cantonal capital of the Segusiavi, Forum Segusiavorum, was founded by Augustus and its origins were assumed to date from this period. Based upon the systematic analysis of a large number of finds series, the author’s study outlines how the different aspects of the Gaulish settlement of the site developed during the century preceding Caesar’s conquest. Seen within the context of inner Gaul, Feurs is of fundamental importance to our understanding of Gaulish civilisation at the end of the Iron Age.

Description: This work, with a preface by the Minister of Cultural Affairs, is the first volume in a series devoted to the research currently being carried out on Mont-Beuvray, a site of major historical importance which was declared a "national heritage" by the President of France in 1985. Fanette Laubenheimer, a Research Director with the French government research council the CNRS, here makes a detailed study of the extraordinary mass of amphorae discovered at the turn of the century by two pioneers of archaeological investigation within France itself. The author first analyses how the collections were made up, the method used by the two archaeologists in dealing with a vast and difficult mass of material about which virtually nothing was known at the time. Until now only brief and summary publications of this material have been available: nonetheless, they have been widely used. They are now superseded by a rigorously organized and welldocumented catalogue presenting the whole of the collections for the first time, and giving an entirely new interpretation of the data. These 195 stamped amphorae, mostly italic, are exceptional in Gaul for their quantity, which demonstrates the extent of imports of Etruscan and Campanian wine into one of the largest oppida of independent Gaul during the 1st century BC, and the subsequent emergence of a new current of wine, oil and fisch sauce imports from the Iberian Peninsula. This work of reference, the first important publication since the recent reopening of excavations in the Aedui capital, bridges the gap between the diggers of the last century and the archaeologists of today.

Description: Before 1988 and the road construction that led to the archaeological operation presented in this book, the site of Paule was considered as just one earthen enclosure among others in Brittany. Then, from the first excavations, its unique nature was revealed: sculptures, monumental enclosures, and numerous potsherds quickly enabled its identification as an aristocratic residence. Twenty years of research have since uncovered six centuries of continuous occupation across nearly 10 hectares. From the farm’s original founding, circa 550 BC, until the site was abandoned circa 15 BC (soon after the Conquest), the reader is invited to follow—in a simple and lively and manner at the scale of human lives—the adaptations of a landed aristocratic family to their environment. Agricultural, defensive and storage needs, along with budding artisanal activities, modeled the buildings and spatial distribution of the site through time. The central family unit gradually detached from its dependents, who were relegated to a peripheral enclosure, as it attracted a population from surrounding areas that it would encompass within a vast fortification. The research methods employed in this work are those of Classical Archaeology, whose quality here lies in their coherence. Yves Menez, whose research at Paul was corroborated by a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne University, chose to venture beyond an interrogation based on complete and objective documentation of the site. Drawing from his double education in archaeology and engineering, he chose to embark on a broader historical and anthropological endeavor, integrating the phenomena involved in the transformations of a broader region. At each stage, he asked “why,” thus delving into the social structure, significance of the family and lineage, and the development of institutions. Abundant color illustrations enhance the written presentation of the archaeological remains, including reconstructions based on a digital field model. Finally, the English translation of the figure legends and detailed summaries of each chapter enable international readers clear access to the descriptions, arguments, and interpretations.

Description: Stéphanie Thiébault is a Research Fellow with the CNRS. In this work, based upon her doctoral thesis, the author considers the relationship between Man and the plant world during the Holocene period and examines this era of significant cultural change along a south-north axis from the Mediterranean to the Savoy. This comprehensive study is the first of its kind to be carried out in the area for this period: over 10,000 charcoal samples, taken from six highly-stratified deposits in the south-western Pre-Alps are analysed and the wood species identified. As a result, this book is also an excellent introduction to the methods of anthracology (the identifying of wood species from charcoal remains). The author assesses the method’s potential for ecological reconstructions of ancient landscapes and climates, as well as its implications for palaeethnology. Conceived as the first stage of a larger project, this study lays the ground-work for future discussion of palaeobotany in the regions examined.

The advantages of exchanges between archaeologists and restorers are here made obvious, with reports from both professions on the same, often unpublished, paintings. The second theme concerns the iconography, as a reconstitution calls on a knowledge of the various decorative and figurative themes employed and which vary in accordance with the possible interpretations. Both archaeologists and restorers will find this publication offers food for thought in the daily details of their work.

Description: In this publication, Jacques Thiriot, a research worker with the CNRS, presents the results of the fieldwork carried out between 1972 and 1979 on the mediaeval grey pottery workshops of the Uzege and the Lower Rhone, in particular at Saint-Victor-des-Oules in the Gard (XIIth and XIIIth cent.) and Bollene in the Vaucluse (XIIIth cent.). During this work, a methodology adapted to the excavation and interpretation of the remains (ovens and buildings) was perfected, thanks to a rigorous technical analysis. It provided an exceptional insight into production methods in one of the largest mediaeval potter’s workshops in south-east France. It has also completed typological data based on pottery found during excavations in user centres, not only in Provence but also in Languedoc. Apart from the subject, rarely dealt with for the mediaeval period, the originality of the work lies in the systematic use of geophysical prospection and scientific methods of dating and in the application of an ethno-archaeological approach which gives a better understanding of mediaeval pottery activities in the region.

Description: This book is intended to fill a senous gap which bas become wider and wider with every year that passes : the absence of an easily accessible source of information about one of the most successful and flourishing enterprises of Roman Gaul. the terra siglata industry. The volume is a collective work by over forty different archaeologists Defined by a research team pi me CNRS, the work include two complementary sets of contribution: a series of 45 notices, each on dedicated to a particular workshop (some of the workshops have been extensively dug, others have only been prospected); a series of 15 reports, some address problems of general methodology and regional history, others are concerned with the relations with the workshops in Switzerland and the Rhine Valley. The major interest of this collection of papers is that it brings to us an up to date inventory of production sites (its predecessor dates from 1968). Its originality is to have established, for the first time, a uniform series of descriptions, one per workshop, covering a wide range of headings The same information is thus available for all the workshops in a form that allows valid comparisons to be made.

Description: From the moment the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc Cave was discovered, in 1994 in Ardèche (France), the art of its walls –attributed to an early phase of the late Paleolithic, around 36,000 years ago- inspired international curiosity and attention. Conscious of the multiple and significant implications of this discovery, the French Ministry of Culture immediately devoted exceptional ressources to the conservation and study of the cave. The Monography de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc is the official publication of all multidisciplinary and multi-institutional research supported by the Ministry of Culture and conducted in the cave since 1997. The aim of this first volume, the Atlas de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc is to enable readers to circulate in the cave via the intermediary of a rich iconography, and to observe and understand the underground landscapes in which the cave art and archaeological remains are located. The four parts of the Atlas (methodology, context, floor maps, conservation) are constructed around maps that represent the various data collections, analyses and representations made during the last twenty years of research. An exceptional publication devoted to exceptional multidisciplinary research, the Atlas de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc offers, in the form of a classic atlas, numerous innovative spatial approaches and concepts: spatial approach to a place of human activity and creativity, spatial approach to an archaeological site, spatial division of a geographic entity of the natural world, which is also a place of collective symbolic espression. » Abundant color illustrations enhance the written presentation of the archaeological remains, including reconstructions based on a digital field model. Description: This study in paleo-ethnology constantes a decisive contribution to knowledge of lifestyles during the Middle Paleolithic and the relationships of Man with his animal and mineral environments. The La Borde aven is one of the first, if not indeed the first French deposit front this period, for which it has been possible to demonstrate more or less systematic exploitation of a single large herbivore, the Aurochs. In spite of the difficult conditions of an urgent rescue excavation, a multidisciplinary team associating researchers from the Ministère de la Culture, from the CNRS and the Universities carried out a study based on stratigraphic analysis and lithic and faunal remains; these lead the authors from a discussion of the type of site (natural trop, waste site or dwelling-site) to an examination of Paleolithic subsistence strategies (scavenging, hunting or mixed economy) and a definition of territories occupied and tool management concepts.

Description: The Seine-Yonne sector occupies a special place in our knowledge of Neolithic societies. Although an interface between the southern and north-eastern branches, it is also the exclusive preserve of chalk flint.

Description: This third D.A.F. volume publishes papers presented at the symposium on landscape archaeology, organised in 1982 by A. Ferdière and E. Zadora-Rio. Fieldwork and landscape studies have today entered more than ever into present archaeological thinking. Such studies are not now limited just to evidence from excavated sites, but to the surrounding natural and human environment, permitting the reconstruction of earlier landscapes. Fieldwork, now established as a discipline in its own right, enables the relationship between actual sites and exploitation sequences of their associated landscape to be better understood. Taking into account the theoretical and practical impossibilities of total fieldwork, speakers at this symposium, in both their communications and during discussions, presented different choices of objectives and methods, and analysed the strengths and weaknesses of each technique adopted.

Description: The publication, more than ten years ago, of a rural settlement occupied from the 6th century BC to the 3rd century AD. the farm of The Boisanne in Plouër-sur-Rance, in the Côtes d’Armor Department (Daf 58), permitted Yves Menez to address the notion of indigenous farms. Today, Ivan Jahier revises this question based on the Protohistoric site of Courseulles-sur-Mer, in this case located inland from the Normandy coast. This site possesses all the classic elements of an indigenous farm: houses, fences, outbuildings, storage facilities, an agricultural and pasture area, domestic remains, traces of craft activities, and even a few graves, but distributed inside and around an enclosure wall three to four times larger than most such walls of the Iron Age of this region What was the purpose of this grouping of a number of storage facilities within an enclosure wall whose function was clearly more ostentatious than defensive and which included no more than two or three houses? Ivan Jahier attempts to answer this question through a solid analytical approach. The conclusions he draws and interpretations he proposes shed new light on the organization of society during the 5th century BC and enable the formulation of new hypotheses concerning the origins of the cultural transition of the beginning of the second Iron Age in Normandy.

Without claiming to give final results in this book, set end teams are particular about presenting an unpublished information which states precisely the nature of the habitat identified through survey and excavation, the date of its establishment and duration of its occupation, and also different data about its relation with environment. It was organised to expose recent results of research on daily life, in particular settlements, food production, the environment, techniques concerning ceramic production and the working of bone and lithic material. If specialists can find in these important publications precisions such as the caracterisation of the Blicquy group, the non-specialist can discover the impact of man on the mediterranean forest and the environment of western Armonica; and amongst others, a panorama of the bone industry up to the Bronze age. This diversified approach is a witness to the dynamism ans the quality of recent research on the Neolithic.

Since 1992, a maritime museum, a research centre and a seabird reserve have been established. It is against this background that preventive archaeology was undertaken from 1996 until 1998, and the highly exciting results are contained within this volume. Tatihou is now considered to be one of the major reference sites for the early and middle Bronze Age in the west of France, particularly because of the field organisation underscored by a network of ditches which criss-cross at right-angles.

Description: Norbert Aujoulat is head of the cave art section at the National Prehistory Centre in Perigueux (Ministry of Culture and Communication/Department of Archaeology). The descriptive analysis of a prehistoric painting or engraving depends, to a great extent, on its reproduction, which, in its turn, depends on a specific methodology and appropriate material. This book is a synthesis of earlier work dealing with reproduction techniques and is also the result of several years of personal research into the photographic recording of data and their Processing by computer in the laboratory. Highly didactic, it is intended as a practical manual, indispensable for any research in the field of cave art.

Description: This book is the first volume of the exhaustive publication of the excavations carried out in Boussargues, located near Montpellier and a majorsite of the Fontbouisse Chalcolithic culture (2500 BC). It includes the study of the natural and cultural surrounding of the site, and the study of the achieved excavation of the West area and its three habitations. The architecture of the buildings, the organization of the domestic space and the settlement in its natural and economical context are the three major orientations. Thanks to a versatile research team, the conclusions drawn are a fundamental contribution to the understanding of the Neolithic cultures from Southern France.

Description: Two decades of research on Motte-and-Bailey castles in Provence have contributed new elements to our knowledge of the castle phenomenon that developed at the end of the 10th century. More than sixty sites have been recorded and our prospection continues to reveal new ones. The excavation of several of them allowed us to identify the evolution of construction methods and the organization of these small castles. In the beginning, they were very modest edifices consisting of simple perched houses that required relatively few resources and employed techniques that were easy to put into operation. In the second phase, beginning around 1000 AD, we observe the construction of true fortresses. The study of these first fortifications focuses on the occupation of terroirs organized around a castrum, often noted in texts. The construction of these fortifications seems to have been most intensive around 1000 AD and during the 11th century, but some were erected at the beginning of the 13th century. This ongoing research shows that the early stages of private fortification was integrated in a vast trend of the occupation of terroirs surrounding complex fortifications.

Description: This monograph describes archaeological excavation carried out at a silver mine known to have been worked during the second half of the sixteenth century. The mine, named “The St-Louis Vein”, is situated in the district of Ste-Marie-aux-Mines in the Haut-Rhin department of France. The study of the site introduces new methods to the archaeology of mining : the interdisciplinary approach adopted is a model of collaboration between archaeologist, speleologist and geologist. The project involves archival research, a survey of surface and belowground remains and the use of archaeological evidence to analyse how the mine was constructed and worked. The mineralogical, structural and climatological aspects of the site are also discussed. The study succeeds in reconstructing the life-history of an ancient mine located in one of the most historically interesting mining areas of Europe.

Description: Carpalogical research combined with careful field methodology provides an exemplary illustration of the potential for an approach only recently applied to historical periods In France. The stocks from the Durfort granary, destroyed by tire in the 14th century, have provided an opportunity to study almost 400,000 seeds from the same occupation layer. The corpus of 157 taxa, composed of 26 cultivated and 131 wild plants, has provided a large number of research opportunities. Carpological analysis, earned out in conjunction with archival research, has produced remarkable information in areas ranging from spatial distribution of grain species in the storage structure to hypotheses on farming practices on medieval community lands in a medium mountain context. The results demonstrate the importance of this contribution to our knowledge at agrarian history and material culture.

Description: The site at Canneville (Oise) has been known since the XIXth century, mainly through surface finds until the rescue excavation in 1974-75. It supplied the material which is studied here by D. Hamard. The few badly damaged sherds allow nevertheless Canneville to be placed between Phase II and III of the Chasseen of northern France. On the other hand more than 3 000 lithic artefacts make up an homogeneous flint assemblage. Statistical studies lead toa suitable descriptive method and throw light on the raw material management System. This book opens up the way to a definition of the lithic assemblage of the Chasseen of northern France and fits into a field of research which is presently proceeding towards a periodisation of this culture.

Description: The study of the burials and cemeteries of the Roman world still suffers from an almost complete lack of regional surveys which, alone, would allow archaeologists to develop wide-ranging synthèses and a better approach of relationships between the world of the living and that of the dead. In the following work, written as a Ph. D. thesis, the author, basing his argumentation on a detailed analysis of the Roman graves discovered in the Armorican peninsula, has attempted to explore their nature and structure, and to show how, in their variety, they closely relate to the cultural diversity of the western Gaulish Civitates.

Description: This study by Joel Vital makes accessible for the first time a whole range of remains from the mid-Rhone Valley in the Final Bronze Age It bus not proved possible to examine dwelling-site organization nor stratigraphy for the Baume des Anges site, which originally spanned a period ranging from the Chalcolithic the Final Bronze Age 3b nevertheless, systematic analysts of the archaeological artefacts, mainly ceramic and metallic, has established both their dates and their geographical origins Statistical treatment of data indicates persistent geographic links with northern Italy during the Early and Late Bronze Ages and with the northern Alpine regions in the Final Bronze Age The new and definitive chronological framework established by this study ret eats on one band a synchronization with the different stages of development of the Bronze Age in continental Europe, and on the other hand the lengthening of that period. This last point has Unifications concerning the dynamics of spatial occupation which will have to be taken into account from now onwards.

Description: The author’s work constitutes the first synthesis, since Father Glory’s work published in 1948, about an unknown aspect of Prehistoric art : postglacial symbolic paintings. This is an inventory ot the Provence painted sites made after systematic surveys which led to rectify interpretation and location mistakes and to put the sites in their archaeological context. This is also an approach to the delicate questions of datation, typology and interpretation. This work appears as a critical study and a documentary corpus necessary to keep in memory these Neolithic art witnesses which disappear more and more every year because of natural agents and vandalism.

Description: Discovered during the construction of a four- lane trunk road (N 176) near Dinan, the Iron Age farm at Le Boisanne is but a modest rural settlement ; it constituted however an ideal subject of study. One can follow without interruption its evolution during a very long period, from the 4th century BC up to the 3rd century AD. The stratigraphy, the structures and the artefacts are presented in detail. The farm is placed in its context, both geographical (the Rance estuary) and historic (Armorican Iron Age). This study is concluded by a broad reflection, extending outside the purely regional framework: on the function and evolution of “native farms” or aedificia (archaeological myth or reality ?) of the Iron Age and gallo-roman periods.

Description: Tout tableau est un fragment.
