    Description: Abstract
Description: This dataset accompanying the MOOC on soil applications contains an airborne hyperspectral HySpex image over the study site Demmin in Northern Germany which was recorded in October 2015. The surrounding area of Demmin is characterized by its glacial past and is largely used for agriculture. Here you can find relics of the ice age such as kettle holes - small, completely closed hollow shapes whose formation is attributed to the burial and subsequent thawing of an ice lens. Mostly overgrown nowadays by vegetation, SOC accumulates in these areas and higher contents are measured. The image dataset is fully pre-processed – all non-soil pixels are masked, the spectra were smoothed using a Savitzky-Golay Filter and transformed to first derivatives – and provided in BSQ format. In addition to the HySpex image, this dataset contains a point data shapefile with 27 sampling locations, as well as information on the soil organic carbon (SOC) contents [g/kg]. The dataset is made publicly available as part of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) "Beyond the Visible - Imaging Spectroscopy for Soil Applications ", available from Spring 2023. Guidance on how to derive quantitative soil maps (SOC content) using the EnMAP-Box (QGIS plugin) are provided as videos at the HYPERedu YouTube channel, the soil MOOC course pages and the regression workflow documentation.

    Description: Abstract
Description: Earthquake swarms occur frequently in Vogtland/West Bohemia at the German-Czech border. The link between these earthquakes and magmatic fluids that escape at the surface has been debated and investigated. The Rohrbach/Vogtland seismic array, installed by the University of Potsdam, Germany, was a small-aperture array that monitored the major earthquake swarm in 2008 and the background seismicity between October 16, 2008 and March 18, 2009. The array consisted of 11 stations equipped with MarsLite data loggers and Lennartz Le3D-5s seismometers. Data were recorded in continuous mode at 250 Hz. Sensors were buried in the ground at 0.5 m depth. High-precision station coordinates were obtained using differential GPS measurements. The array data has been used for analyses of earthquakes and seismic structures. Waveform data is fully open.

    Description: Abstract
Description: Ketzin in a small town 20km west of Berlin that hosts a research facility for underground storage. Starting in 2008 the site was used to investigate the onshore geological storage of carbon dioxide (Liebscher et al., 2013). Among a large variety of downhole monitoring measurements and repeated 3D seismics above the storage formation, a seismic network was installed to investigate the possibility of monitoring subsurface processes related to the injection of CO2 with passive seismic recordings (Gassenmeier et al., 2015). The network was operated for 12 month from early 2011 to 2012 and consisted of 10 Guralp broadband sensors of the Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam (GIPP). Five instruments were located at the drilling site and five instruments were installed at a distance up to 3.5km around the injection site. The Instruments were either installed in basements or buried at a depth of about 70cm (KTE, KTF and KTG). The installation was supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF, grant 03G0736A) by the University of Leipzig and the GIPP.

    Description: Abstract
Description: The Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone (TTZ) as part of the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ) is one of the most prominent suture zones in Europe separating the young Palaeozoic platform from the much older Precambrian East European craton. The knowledge of deep structure of the TESZ is very important for the understanding of various tectonic processes in Europe. The PASSEQ 2006-2008 seismic experiment was performed thanks to a big international effort of 17 institutions from 10 countries. A total of 139 three-component temporary short-period and 49 temporary broadband seismic stations provided continuous recordings between May 2006 and June 2008 with the main period of recordings during 2007, in an array about 1200 km long and 400 km wide running from Germany through the Czech Republic and Poland to Lithuania. The average spacing between all stations was about 60 km, attaining about 20 km in the central part. The configuration of the seismic network was a compromise among needs of different seismic methods. The dense central profile allows the use of modern passive 2-D imaging techniques, while the distribution of broadband sensors was designed for surface wave and receiver function studies of the upper mantle down to the transition zone in a wide frequency range. Waveform data is fully open, with network code 7E.

Description: Cities can be severely affected by climate change. Hence, many of them have started to develop climate adaptation strategies or implement measures to help prepare for the challenges it will present. This study aims to provide an overview of climate adaptation in 104 German cities. While existing studies on adaptation tracking rely heavily on self-reported data or the mere existence of adaptation plans, we applied the broader concept of adaptation readiness, considering five factors and a total of twelve different indicators, when making our assessments. We clustered the cities depending on the contribution of these factors to the overall adaptation readiness index and grouped them according to their total score and cluster affiliations. This resulted in us identifying four groups of cities. First, a pioneering group comprises twelve (mainly big) cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants, which showed high scores for all five factors of adaptation readiness. Second, a set of 36 active cities, which follow different strategies on how to deal with climate adaptation. Third, a group of 28 cities showed considerably less activity toward climate adaptation, while a fourth set of 28 mostly small cities (with between 50,000 and 99,999 inhabitants) scored the lowest. We consider this final group to be pursuing a ‘wait-and-see’ approach. Since the city size correlates with the adaptation readiness index, we recommend policymakers introduce funding schemes that focus on supporting small cities, to help them prepare for the impact of a changing climate.

Description: In the Variscan Schwarzwald metabasic rocks form small bodies included within anatectic plagioclase-biotite gneisses. Many metabasites first underwent an eclogite-facies metamorphism at about 2.0 GPa and 670–700 °C, resulting in the assemblage garnet + omphacite + rutile + quartz ± epidote ± amphibole ± kyanite. Since these eclogites are nearly free of an OH-bearing phase, they underwent almost complete dehydration during subduction, suggesting formation along an average to warm top-of-the-slab geotherm of 10–13 °C/km. The age of the Variscan high-P/high-T metamorphism is 〉 333 Ma. After partial exhumation from ~ 65 to ~ 15 km depth, the eclogites were overprinted under increasing activity of H〈sub〉2〈/sub〉O by a number of retrograde reactions. The degree of this overprint under amphibolite-facies conditions (0.4–0.5 GPa/675–690 °C) was very different. Up to now, only retrograde eclogites have been found, but some samples still contain omphacite. Kyanite is at least partially transformed to aggregates of plagioclase + spinel ± corundum ± sapphirine. On the other hand, there are amphibolites that are extensively recrystallized and show the assemblage amphibole + plagioclase + ilmenite/titanite ± biotite ± quartz ± sulphides. The last relic phase that can be found in such otherwise completely recrystallized amphibolites is rutile. After the amphibolite-facies metamorphism at ~ 333 Ma, the metabasites underwent a number of low-temperature transformations, such as sericitization of plagioclase, chloritization of amphibole, and formation of prehnite. The intimate association of metabasite bodies with gneisses of dominantly meta-greywacke compositions suggests derivation from an active plate margin. This view is corroborated by bulk-rock geochemical data. Excluding elements that were mobile during metamorphism (Cs, Rb, Ba, K, Pb, Sr, U), the concentrations of the remaining elements in most of the metabasites are compatible with a derivation from island-arc tholeiites, back-arc basin basalts or calc-alkaline basalts. Only some samples have MORB precursor rocks.

Description: Over the past decades, fractured and karst groundwater systems have been studied intensively due to their high vulnerability to nitrate (NO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉) contamination, yet nitrogen (N) turnover processes within the recharge area are still poorly understood. This study investigated the role of the karstified recharge area in NO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉 transfer and turnover by combining isotopic analysis of NO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉 and nitrite (NO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉) with time series data of hydraulic heads and specific electrical conductivity from groundwater monitoring wells and a karstic spring in Germany. A large spatial variability of groundwater NO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉 concentrations (0.1–0.8 mM) was observed, which cannot be explained solely by agricultural land use. Natural-abundance N and O isotope measurements of NO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉 (δ〈sup〉15〈/sup〉N and δ〈sup〉18〈/sup〉O) confirm that NO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉 derives mainly from manure or fertilizer applications. Fractional N elimination by denitrification is indicated by relatively high δ〈sup〉15〈/sup〉N- and δ〈sup〉18〈/sup〉O-NO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉 values, elevated NO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉 concentrations (0.05–0.14 mM), and δ〈sup〉15〈/sup〉N-NO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉 values that were systematically lower than the corresponding values of δ〈sup〉15〈/sup〉N-NO〈sub〉3〈/sub〉〈sup〉−〈/sup〉. Hydraulic and chemical response patterns of groundwater wells suggest that rain events result in the displacement of water from transient storage compartments such as the epikarst or the fissure network of the phreatic zone. Although O〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 levels of the investigated groundwaters were close to saturation, local denitrification might be promoted in microoxic or anoxic niches formed in the ferrous iron-bearing carbonate rock formations. The results revealed that (temporarily) saturated fissure networks in the phreatic zone and the epikarst may play an important role in N turnover during the recharge of fractured aquifers.
