    Beschreibung: Sophie Day explores the houses that are imagined, built, repurposed, and dismantled among different communities in Ladakh, drawing attention to the ways in which houses are like and unlike people.A handful of in-depth ‘house portraits’ are selected for the insight they provide into major regional developments, based on the author’s extended engagement since 1981. Most of these houses are Buddhist and associated with the town of Leh. Drawing on both image and text, collaborative methods for assembling material show the intricate relationships between people and places over the life course. Innovative methods for recording and archiving such as ‘storyboards’ are developed to frame different views of the house. This approach raises analytical questions about the composition of life within and beyond storyboards, offering new ways to understand a region that intrigues specialists and non-specialists alike.

    Beschreibung: This chapter examines the emergence of two competing discursive and visual repertoires on Macedonian national identity in order to analyze and theorize contemporary political polarization as a new form of identity politics. Focusing on examples from the premiership of Nikola Gruevski and the 2018 referendum on the Prespa Agreement, the chapter describes how rival political movements developed distinct aesthetic forms to represent (North) Macedonia. On the one hand, Gruevski's nationalist political project embraced revivalist aesthetics to portray its version of the Macedonian nation and its history. On the other hand, critics of Gruevski drew from a modernist palette to represent their own version of a European and cosmopolitan Macedonia. Ultimately, in analyzing such “doubled” expressions of Macedonian identity, the chapter argues that the variety of political polarization evident in contemporary North Macedonia constitutes a new form of identity politics, one based not on multiculturalist claims to identity difference—so-called “recognition struggles”—but on competing, monopoly claims over one and the same identity category—characterized here as “representation struggles.

Designed to resolve a protracted and bitter dispute, the agreement signed by the Macedonian and Greek foreign ministers on the banks of the Prespa lake stipulated that the Republic of Macedonia change its name to the Republic of North Macedonia.The chapters examine the social, political, and economic conditions and events that led to the agreement and the implications and consequences for identity politics in the region. Consideration is given to the ways in which, and the reasons why, identity/identities, difference/differences, modes of belonging, and experiences of injustice and discrimination have been mobilized.     Beschreibung: Biomedical pharmaceuticals, and specifically hormonal contraceptives, are often framed as tools to help women gain control over their lives through planning future offspring and being granted the ability to pursue life projects free of child-rearing concerns. In reproduction, hormonal contraceptives are one such pharmaceutical that could potentially be framed as “biohacking” by “enhancing” humans and rendering them cyborgian by suppressing “unwanted” menstruation and its associated bodily troubles. This chapter is based on ethnographic research undertaken over one year in a rural Quechua community in the province of Ayacucho, in the Peruvian Andes. In the period 1996–2000, an estimated 300,000+ Indigenous women underwent enforced sterilization in Peru as part of the national family planning program; many women did not give their consent, nor understand the permanence of the procedure.

    Beschreibung: Instead of merely recapitulating the main chapter findings, the conclusion expands dynamically on the themes of curses and shamanism by focusing on wider sociocultural processes and shifts occurring in post-Soviet Kyzyl. In short, it highlights how the way people experience and describe post-Soviet life in Kyzyl is similar to the way people who have been cursed describe and experience this phenomenon, suggesting that day-to-day life in Kyzyl could be compared to living a curse. In fact, emphasising the role of turbulence, shock and uncertainty associated with cursing, the chapter concentrates on different representations of post-colonial conflicts, such as tensions between individual shamans and shamans from the societies, shifts in the religious and family landscapes, alcoholism, disease and technological development. More than this the chapter delineates how the shifts occurring in post-Soviet Kyzyl can be effectively analysed without reverting to the already exhausted ideas about cultural revivalism and ethnic rediscovery, dominant in the studies of the post-colonial sociocultural landscapes.

Using long-term ethnographic research on devotional Islam in Mauritius, Patrick Eisenlohr explores how the voice, as a site of divine manifestation, becomes refracted in media practices that have become integral parts of religious traditions. At the core of Eisenlohr’s concern is the interplay of voice, media, affect, and listeners’ religious experiences. Sounding Islam sheds new light on a key dimension of religion, the sonic incitement of sensations that are often difficult to translate into language.
