Notes: Conclusion. Summary Morphological and statistical researches on the sensory equipment of the Ant's antennæ in chapter I of this work have enabled us to interpret some biological phenomena to be enlarged upon in the next chapters. The part played by the champagne cork shaped organs in the trophallaxic behaviour has been shown by ablations ofMyrmica lævinodis Nyl. antennæ.Aphænogaster gibbosa Latr., a species which does not practise the stomodeal exchanges, possesses twice less numerous champagne cork shaped organs on its antennæ. Besides, in those mixed colonies where the two species are bred together,Aphænogaster sometimes receives food fromMyrmica. However the importance of those needful organs should hot be overvalued becauseMyrmica is partly able to practise the trophallaxic behaviour whithout its feelers. Moreover, ifAphænogaster does not exchange food in its nests, this is certainly not due to a defect of its sensory equipment but very likely to the disappearance of the innate behaviour of «agiver», an inductor of the one of a «receiver». ThusAphænogaster's sensory equipment does need to become as evolued as the one ofMyrmica. The importance (very likely of an olfactory nature) of those organs in other behaviours may have caused its persistence onAphænogaster's antennæ. The crop of that ant has grown much less extensible than the one ofMyrmica. It is further to be noticed that the behaviour ofMyrmica as agiver when its feelers have been cut-off proves easier to carry out but more difficult to acquire or to preserve on the evolutive plane, and thus seems to be more basic as regards trophallaxy. Finaly, beyard the knowledge of the sensory qualities, the interest of the myrmecological material lies in that it affords a new method of approach for the study of the determinism of the behaviour.

Notes: Summary The conditions under which Love type ofSH waves can propagate in a non-homogeneous internal stratum of finite depth lying between two semi-infinite isotropic elastic media are considered in this paper. Two types of non-homogeneity have been studied, in one case the rigidity is supposed to vary exponentially with depth while the density remains constant and in the other both rigidity and density are assumed to vary linearly with depth.

Notes: Summary The linear adjustment of the energy-frequency distribution of earthquakes is critically regarded. However, it contains some faults. Therefore, the logarithmic-normal distribution is proposed for adjusting energy-frequency observations of earthquakes. The parameters of the logarithmicnormal distribution are determined from observations by the method of least squares. For many examples from different epicentral areas and different time intervals the parameters of the logarithmicnormal distribution are calculated and compared with one another. It follows that the exact shape of the energy-frequency distribution is fixed by the total energy of all earthquakes occurring per unit of time. There must be the possibility of liberating the seismic energy of 1013 ergs in a given epicentral area of 1000 km2 during one year, so that earthquakes can really occur.

Notes: Summary The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a two-layer anisotropic earth from an oscillating vertical electric dipole placed over it has been studied. Formal expression for the vector potential in the top layer has been determined for the general case when both the layers are electrically anisotropic. The conductivity and the permittivity tensors of the layers are assumed to have simple diagonal forms. Three special cases of practical interest have been considered in detail, for which the results are given in terms of tabulated functions. It has been shown that at the surface of the earth, only the electric field components are influenced by the anisotropy.

Notes: Summary A numerical experiment was made in order to investigate whether it is possible to obtain agreement between photochemical theory and observation of ozone in a pure oxygen (i.e. a dry) atmosphere at levels where near-equilibrium can be expected. Considerable but not completely unreasonable adjustment of some of the uncertain photochemical parameters (reaction rates and their temperature dependence, solar spectral energy distribution) from their presently most probable value is found to be needed.

Notes: Summary A new absolute condensation nucleus counter was constructed to investigate the accuracy of the calibration widely used with the Pollak-Nolan photoelectric condensation nucleus counter. An attempt was made to standardize the conditions affecting calibration and, using the new counter, to recalibrate the photoelectric counter at values of extinction less than 16%. Over this extinction range, the present work indicates nucleus concentrations which are higher by about 30% than those given by the calibration ofPollak andMetnieks [8]3). In view of the great natural variability of Aitken nucleus concentrations, this discrepancy, if real, is of little meteorological importance.

Notes: Summary In the present note the author has considered the torsional vibration of a cylindrical shell of non-homogeneous material whose rigidity and density vary linearly with distance from the axis of the shell. It is assumed that one end of the shell is fixed while the other end is acted on by a periodic shearing force, both the inner and the outer curved surface being free from stress at all times.

Notes: Summary Within the geophysical literature there is shown a group of proceedings concerning analytical continuities of potential fields into the lower half-space. These proceedings are based on the Poisson's formula which gives a solution to the Dirichlet's problem applied to in a plane degenerated spheres, like this: $$\begin{gathered} \bar g(x,y) = \frac{h}{{2\pi }}\smallint \smallint \frac{{g(\xi ,\zeta )}}{{[(\xi - x)^2 + (\zeta - y)^2 + h^2 ]^{{3 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {3 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} }}d\xi d\zeta \hfill \\ R^2 \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ where (x, y) is the at the surface measured gravity-or magnetic-field; andg(ζ, ξ) is the field within a plane at ah(z=h) elevation. To discoverg(ζ, ξ) within thez=h plane, the successive approximating method is commonly used. Within the present paper two proceedings of effectuating analytical continuities by using the aleatory numbers method (the Monte Carlo method) as well as the linear programming algorithmes, are suggested.

Notes: Summary A simple transformation called pseudo-magnetic transformation is introduced in which the horizontal derivatives of the observed gravity anomalies of any body will be calculated. These horizontal derivatives, called the pseudo-magnetic anomalies, are proportional to the vertical magnetic anomalies of the same body assumed to be polarised horizontally. It is shown that the interpretation of gravity anomalies of dykes is not unique except by computing the pseudo-magnetic anomalies, which will be interpreted by the logarithmic curve fitting technique indicated earlier [5]2).

Notes: Summary The case histories of some active volcanoes in various parts of the world are analyzed from the standpoint of their being observations of point events in a time continuum. The eruptive histories of the three Japanese volcanoes included show trend in the rate of occurrence of outbreaks. The possible existence of trend in rate of occurrence of events was found for certain Lower Cretaceous bentonites of Wyoming. The data investigated for Etna derive from a period of persistent activity and here also trend in the rate of occurrence of ejections could be identified. The remaining volcanoes studied do not display significant trend in the rate of occurence of outbreaks over the time interval available. Various statistical tests indicate, that although some of the non-trend volcanoes may be fairly closely approximated as regards rate of occurrence of eruptions by the plausible Poisson model, none agree in all respects with the requirements of this process. The patterns of activity of volcanoes found to differ greatly from the Poisson model are complicated kinds of point processes, but owing to the shortness of the series available and their rather unsatisfactory accuracy, it is not possible to be explicit as to their precise nature. In order to elucidate some aspects of the analysis, a simulated series of outbreaks with exponentially distributed intervals between events was produced. The general scheme of analysis adopted has been firstly to test for trend; if trend in the rate of occurrence of events does not occur, the series have been tested for dependence. If there is no dependence between events, tests for agreement with a Poisson model have been carried out, with a negative conclusion leading to a test for agreement with some kind of renewal process. In order to provide a comparison with another type of natural phenomenon of a random nature, the earthquakes occurring in Fennoscandia over the period 1891 to 1950 were analyzed by the same methods. Perhaps surprisingly, the 322 shocks registered during this time (shocks≧3.0 on the Gutenberg-Richter scale) show an indication of trend with a tendency for a decrease in the rate of occurrence of shocks. The eruption pattern of Mauna Loa is thought to be approximately a simple Poisson process. The patterns for Semeru, Bromo and Peak of Ternate seem to be reasonably consistent with a renewal process model, but appear to differ from a Poisson process. The Indonesian volcanoes have several features in common, among these a high coefficient of variation for the times between eruptions. It is tentatively suggested that this may be of some genetic significance. It is possible, that the Indonesian volcanoes erupt in accordance with a pattern approximating to some kind of stationary point process.

Notes: Summary The distillation process by solar energy is explained by a system of equations based on heat and mass transfer laws. The efficiency of the still obtained theoretically, applying these equations, has been found in good agreement with the values obtained experimentally under actual atmospheric conditions. The validity of these equations has led to the evaluation of the different heat losses during the distillation process.

Notes: Summary The present note makes use of electromagnetic equations of Maxwell and those of mechanical motions to work out the problem of disturbances in two perfectly conductive media—an ideal liquid and a perfectly elastic solid-acted upon by a magnetic field perpendicular to their plane of contact. The displacement suffered by solid medium has been determined when a tangential force, exponentially decaying with time, acts in the plane of contact of the two media. The solution of the problem is achieved by using the method of Laplace transform.

Notes: Summary A study is made of an airborne magnetometer profile from 130 km offshore Mangalore to 60 km offshore Madras approximately along the 13th degree parallel obtained in May 1967 by the National Geophysical Research Institute. The total length of the profile is about 770 km. A Bouguer gravity anomaly profile along same traverse over the land section has been also studied along with the magnetic profile. Eight major anomalies on the magnetic profile were chosen for depth calculations. Depths of the magnetic bodies were determined by elementary approximation method ofSmellie. It is found that in most of the cases the sources of the magnetic anomalies lie between 5 to 20 km (approximately). Only one anomaly yielded a depth of 2.7 km for its source. These anomalies are accounted for in terms of possible basic intrusions, faults, zones of weakness and ridge-like structures in deeper Crustal levels.

Notes: Summary A modification ofNatanson's three-body recombination theory is used to determine empirical values of the ion-ion trapping distance. The modified theory is shown to predict accurately the altitude variation of electrical conductivity in the troposphere. The empirical trapping distance for ion-ion recombination is then used to determine the ion-aerosol trapping distance and a three-body theory for calculating the ion-aerosol attachment coefficients is developed. The theory should be valid for the small aerosols (Aitken nuclei) found naturally in the troposphere.

Notes: Summary A modified Gerdien cell was designed, evaluated, and built for measurement of the polar conductivities in clouds. This conductivity dropsonde was attached to a U.S. Weather Bureau, 1680 mHz, radiosonde for telemetry and to measure pressure, temperature, and relative humidity profiles. The combined instruments were ejected from aircraft, and others were released from balloons into the region of interest. Eight flights were made during the 1967 thunderstorm season. Three of these drops were successful in measuring conductivity inside of electrically active clouds. Two fair-weather profiles were measured for comparison purposes, and three of the drops were faulty. These very preliminary results tend to indicate considerable electrical conductivity in thunderclouds. The data are too few to support a strong statement in favor of increased conductivity, but the instruments were sufficiently reliable to prove that the conductivity was not reduced, as is normally assumed, in the clouds investigated.

Notes: Summary An attempt is made to determine the optimum representation of the geomagnetic field in terms of spherical harmonics with regard to the number of parameters required for an adequate accuracy of fit, and considering the effect of allowing for the oblateness of the earth. A representative set of geomagnetic data was subjected to a set of analyses with from 8 to 120 coefficients for both spherical and oblate models of the earth. It is concluded that a sixth order analysis (48 coefficients) with no allowance for oblateness is the most compact representation of the field compatible with tolerable accuracy.

Notes: Summary A magnetic dipole is supposed to be suddenly introduced in the earth's core (taken as an inviscid, incompressible fluid of finite electrical conductivity) to act as a source of disturbance. It is shown that although in the symmetric case of the problem the disturbed fluid is stagnant in any direction at the interface separating core from the solid insulating mantle; yet it should slip in any tangential direction at the interface, in each of the three unsymmetric cases considered here.

Notes: Summary Two formulas, using Taylor's series expansion method, have been developed by means of which the second vertical derivative of gravity field may be computed at any point in the horizontal plane of observation. A comparative study of the resolving powers of different approaches by performing numerical and filter response tests suggests that the formulas provide a definite improvement over many existing methods.

Notes: Summary The elastic response (i.e., displacement fields, strain and stress distributions) has been determined by structural matrix analysis for a homogeneous rock layer subjected to two-dimensional distributions of vertical displacement applied along a basal boundary. The results obtained compare favorably with biharmonic function solutions obtained bySanford [42]2) and the authors. The analysis was then extended: the effects of different magnitudes of superposed gravitationally-induced stresses, release of a constrained side boundary, and introduction of pronounced heterogeneity were each quantitatively evaluated. Each of these changed conditions effected important alterations in response characteristics, e.g., in configuration of stress trajectories, predicted locations and configurations of initial fracture surfaces, shear stress distributions, and displacement fields. These results are cited as an example of the utility of finite-element analysis (originally developed for evaluation of aeronautical structural components) for solutions of boundary value problems of a geological/geophysical nature. The breadth of specific physical problems succeptible to evaluation by this method is large and includes (i) behavior of rocks under static/dynamic loading, (ii) seismic response, (iii) heat and fluid flow, and (iv) distribution of potential. Most of the fundamental problems in geophysics, structural geology, geohydrology, geomorphology, glaciology, and engineering geology involve the above categories either directly or otherwise. The finite-element approach to these problems if bound to have enormous significance, for unlike classical mechanics, it can be readily adapted to solution of systems characterized by non-linear, anisotropic, heterogeneous material properties, of any exterior configuration, containing structural discontinuities, and subjected to any viable combinations of load/displacement boundary conditions.

Notes: Summary In this paper the disturbances in an inhomogeneous medium due to two types of forces (i) transient normal forces, (ii) transient twists in presence of a buried spherical source has been considered. The material of the inhomogeneous medium is assumed to be transversely isotropic. The results are in terms of modified Bessel functions. In a particular case, the equation reduces to an ordinary differential equation of second order.

Notes: Summary A two-dimensional diffusion model in the vertical plane is considered as an unsteady boundary value problem which is solved by applying Laplace transformation and finding Green's function. The effects of the surface (ground) absorption (measured by β) and the terminal velocity (w) present an alternative explanation other than considering the variable eddy diffusivities and the change of the wind with height. It is shown that the effect of the surface absorption acts opposite to the effect of the terminal velocity for the diffusion of a source placed at the surface. The former alone reduces the concentration with the distance in the downwind direction at a faster rate than the latter alone. The path of the plume is considered only for the casew=2 β. The effects of suchw and β only slightly modify the path of the plume without such effects. If the height of the source is short, say 20 m, the modification of the path of the plume is insignificant compared to that of the case with the source placed at the surface.

Notes: Summary The global distribution of the lunar barometric tideL 2 is investigated by spherical harmonic analysis, based on 104 stations for the annual mean, and on 85 stations for the three seasons. The main wave ofL 2 is the one with wave number 2, but for a detailed study of the irregularities of the global distribution ofL 2, waves with other wave numbers have also to be considered. Even the main wave ofL 2 is asymmetric to the equator with the two lunar-daily pressure maxima occurring earlier in the Southern than in the Northern Hemisphere. The amplitudes at the same distances from the equator are greater in the Southern than in the Northern Hemisphere. These hemispheric differences are most pronounced during the D season. As found in earlier investigations the phase consiant ofL 2 is always greater during the J season than during the D season. But the amplitudes are greatest during the J season only north of 30oS. Farther south the amplitude maximum occurs during the D season.

Notes: Summary After a description of the field measuring method by radioactive probes a mathematical formulation is established to grasp the field distortion by a potential gradient radiosonde. With some approximations it is possible to derive form factors which depend on the length of the upper and the lower collector rod. In order to get a form factor 1.00 one can choose certain values of lengths. — The absolute determination of the form factor was carried out by using an artificial field in a cage. We were able to show that the dimensions of the cage have to exceed certain minimum values; in our case we succeeded with the measures 5 m height, 3 m×3 m base. Some results of form factors of different sondes are given and the experiences of using other methods to determine these factors by twin ascents or by comparison with ground measurementes etc. are described.

Notes: Summary The effect of hypophysectomy and of a successive treatment with LTH and STH on growth and weight gain was investigated in pigeons, 2–6 weeks of age. LTH stimulates as well as STH the growth retarded by hypophysectomy. Either hormone not only prevents the decrease of body weight caused by hypophysectomy but even produces an evident increase. The growth: weight-ratio approximates better to the value of normally developed animals in case of LTH-treatment than in case of STH-treatment.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. “Twin feathers” described for various domestic breeds of pigeons have been found in Oriental Rollers in 12 per cent of the sides of the tails during each of the breeding periods. 2. Each studied twin feather originates in a single follicle. It shows either one sheath (“split feather”) or two sheaths (“double feather”). 72 per cent of the feathers have been found in the middles of the tails, 23 per cent in the middle of one side of the rows of rectrices. 3. Twin feathers grow either out of one papilla and one blastema having the ability for forming two shafts (split feathers) or from two separated papillae and blastemas lying in a single follicle cavity (double feathers). 4. The degree of splitting of split feathers is correlated to the position of the shaft primordia in the collars. Feathers of a degree of splitting exceeding 85 per cent have been found growing from collars with a pair of shaft primordia in an approximately diametrical and lateral position and a consequently large ramogenous zone between them, otherwise the two rhachis fuse during their development so that the follicle gives rise to a feather of a smaller degree of splitting. 5. The individual formation of a twin feather in a definite follicle will not vary in the succession of the feather generations, except for the rare non-reappearance of one twin of double feathers. Especially the degree of splitting has been observed to be invariable. 6. Generally the material of a twin feather is augmented compared to the symmetrically situated feather of the opposite side of the tail. The weight and area of a double feather is doubled, the weights of split feathers are significantly increased, the areas only of feathers with a degree of splitting exceeding 85 per cent. 7. Similar principles may be stated for twin downs of nestlings, but a great number of twin downs with mutual filaments has been observed. In the first generation of contour feathers, the twin downs are generally followed by twin feathers, only in rare cases by normal feathers. The specific formations of so-called “stunted feathers” (representing a kind of double feathers) may be followed in their turn by double or split feathers, if the malformation will not recur. 8. In cross sections of the basic region of twin downs of nestlings, a fusion of the blastemas and papillae has been found in many cases. It may be supposed that in this way the blastemas of the split feathers, studied in this paper, originate, that means by a down-growth of two primordia into one follicle (caused by an excessive number of primordia in the delimited row of definitive tail feathers) and by a subsequent fusion. In contrast to the follicles of split feathers, the collars and papillae remain separated by a basic portion of the follicle wall in follicles of double feathers.

Notes: Summary A chronologic study was made of the histopathologic changes which occur in the cardiac apex of the rat following the application of Selye's „ventricular ligature“. Organisation in the necrotic cardiac muscle begins soon after ligature. Later, the granulationtissue is gradually replaced by scar tissue which is poor in cells but rich in fibers. In the subendocardial fibrous tissue, cartilage and bone develop. It is emphasized that cartilage formation is not initiated by calcification. Instead, the fibroblasts are converted to cartilage cells and, later, calcium salts are deposited in the matrix. This is followed by endochondral bone formation. Finally, bone marrow appears in the intertrabecular spaces. Triamcinolone mildly hindered connective-tissue proliferation, thyroxine increased cartilage and bone formation, while estradiol did not influence these processes.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung l.
Notes: Summary 1. Aggregation of embryonic Amphibian cells dissociated by Trypsin or EDTA is supressed reversibly by actidion (cycloheximid 0.5–2 Μg/ml), an inhibitor of protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is inhibited more than 90% at these concentrations. The inhibition by actidion was still reversible after 48 hours, when the cells were transferred to normal medium. Actidion added to cells, cultured in Flickinger solution for 3 h, was no longer able to stop further aggregation. 2. Puromycin reversibly suppresses aggregation at a concentration of 20 (Μg/ml, when protein synthesis is inhibited to 66 %. 3. After EDTA-dissociation the formation of initial small clusters of 5–10 cells (primary aggregation) occurred even in the presence of inhibitors of protein synthesis. The primary aggregation is however suppressed if actidion or puromycin are already added during the dissociation procedure. 4. In the presence of actinomycin-D (1–2 Μg/ml) the cells continue to aggregate like the controls. After 30 h further aggregation is stopped and the aggregates loose single cells. 5. Differences in the aggregation of cells after EDTA and Trypsin treatment are discussed.

Notes: Summary Tail regeneration inXenopus larvae is substantially reduced and morphologically disturbed if the continuity of the neural tube at the base of the tail is permanently impaired. This operation is believed to block the transport of a growth factor derived from the diencephalic roof and transmitted to the regeneration site via the central canal. The following experimental data support this hypothesis: 1. Tails transplanted into host larvae and partially amputated after revascularisation but without connection between the transplant and the host neural tube regenerate in the same abnormal manner as do tails in larvae without a continuous neural tube. 2. Simple transsection of the neural tube followed by reunion of the separated parts allows of normal regeneration of the tail provided the patency of the central canal is restored. 3. Occlusion of the ventricles of the brain by injection of agar does not affect normal tail motility but causes the same atypical tail regeneration as does discontinuity of the neural tube. 4. Coagulation of the telencephalon and major parts of the mesencephalic roof leaves tail regeneration unimpaired provided the operation did not lead to an obstruction behind the third ventricle; destruction of the diencephalon has the same effect on regeneration as severance of the neural tube. This effect may still be observed if only a very small part of the diencephalic roof containing the subcommissural organ is coagulated. 5. According to literature the subcommissural organ gives rise to the Reissner's fibre which passes the whole length of the central canal and releases its secretion through the wall of the terminal vesicle into the surrounding tissues. Therefore the subcommissural organ might well be the source of the postulated factor promoting tail regeneration.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. At any axial level in the polyps the potencies to regenerate basal parts are suppressed, while apical regions can be regenerated. If regenerative formations occur at the basal end at all, they will become apical structures leading to bipolar forms with symmetrical axial pattern. 2. The probability of such heteropolar development is positively correlated to the distance between the apical pole and the basal cut. Moreover, the probability rises, at all distances, after removal of the hypostomes, which, therefore, are interpreted as being in a position of dominance. 3. The lag between amputation and the appearance of new tentacles increases from apex to base. This gradient, being less steep for heteropolar regeneration, ensures that the apical primordium normally will get a start to win the position of dominance. Accordingly the rate of heteropolarity rises after removing or destroying the apical primordium within 3–12 h after amputation of the hypostome. 4. The polar pattern of potencies changes after dissociation of tissue. Reaggregated cellassociations develop stolons, whereas the potency of stolon formation proves to be stably suppressed in all parts of intact polyps. This potency is released also after operative displacement of the polar axis by 90°. 5. Induction phenomena occur when two regions of different and distant axial level are brought into contact, either by transplantation or by parabiosis. The induced formations develop those axial regions that normally are located between the two combined regions. 6. In several experiments, including parabiosis combinations, implanting of marks and autoradiographic studies, the inductive system was shown to consist of two components: a) The apical system, the vector of which is directed from apex to base: regions above the stationary zone bring about the development of structures in more basal levels, that may occur spontaneously in regeneration and that belong to higher axial levels. b) The basal system, directed from base to apex: the hydrorhiza induces, in regions in which the tissue movement is orientated basally (regions below the stationary zone), structures the properties of which are characteristic of deeper axial levels and that can not be regenerated. The vectors of the inductive streams, therefore, are opposed to the vectors of tissue movement during steady state growth. After disconnecting the junction to the hydrorhiza, that is the source of the basal inductive stimulus, the basally directed stream of cellular material dies down. 7. Following ideas of gene physiology a model of the process regulating differentiation can be constructed, which will describe the development of polar patterns in regeneration, induction phenomena, budding and steady state growth, and which may attribute all morphogenetic processes to the same mechanisms of control. These mechanisms include activators as well as blocking factors subjected to the activating stimuli. The assumption of gradients established by diffusible substances is not implicitely necessary.

Notes: Summary The effects of the implantation of 1–4 pairs of Corpora allata on the development of the eggs and the follicular epithelium ofCarausius morosus has been studied. The degree of the effects is determined by the number of the implantated C. allata. More than 3 pairs inhibit without exception any metamorphosis. All the eggs and their follicle epithelium of the giart larvae show defects of various kinds; especially of the egg shell. The development of the operculum and capitulum is independent of the development of the other parts of the shell. All deformities are explained by the disturbed proportion of Ecdyson and the hormone of the corpora allata. Normal development of the eggs requises the prior dissolution of the ventral glands of the head (=prothoracic glands).

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. In order to evaluate the development of the xenoplastic eye chimerae, stages of differentiation of the normal eye inBombina variegata, Hyla arborea andTriturus alpestris between the second and ninth day after neurulation have been worked out, and the results are summarized in Table 1. 2. Four types of chimeric eyes developed after transplantation of the eye-cup anlagen: type I, species-specific donor eye cup with a host lens; type II, host lens with a chimeric eye cup which was made of donor and host material, and appeared morphologically as well as histologically uniform; type III, host and donor parts of the eye cup were each surrounded by their own tapetum nigrum, but formed morphologically a chimeric eye cup of harmonious proportion with a host lens; type IV, chimeric eye of type I with, however, an additional diminished host eye. 3. The histological differentiation of the eye cup of the chimeric eye is autonomous. 4. In the absence of a lens the differentiation of the eye cup is retarded. 5. In chimeric eyes of type I the differentiation of theTriturus host lens is normal, whereas that of theBombina host lens shows a slight retardation. 6. After transplantation of the lens anlage several donor and host lenses have frequently been found, possibly due to the autonomous reactivity of the epidermis in the different species. Chimeric or donor lenses were of rare occurrence. 7. The lens size of chimeric eyes is determined by the size and inducing capacity of the eye cup, the duration of the inductive contact as well as the species-specific size of the lens vesicle. The species-specific dimension of the eye cup acts as a limiting factor to the growth of the lens. Thus, the lens index of chimeric eyes with aBombina eye cup is larger, whereas that of chimeric eyes with aTriturus eye cup appears smaller than the indices of the two control species. 8. If a lens is not induced, a Wolffian lens may develop inBombina hosts with aTriturs eye cup. In complete chimeric eyes the regeneration of a Wolffian lens is suppressed by theBombina lens. 9. Owing to the primary incompatibility eye cups transplanted fromTriturus toHyla andRana as well as lens epidermis transplanted fromTriturus toRana are expelled. As a reaction of the secondary incompatibilityBombina eye cups inTriturus hosts start to degenerate on the 11th day after transplantation. The degeneration of eye cups fromHyla andRana donors begins even earlier. If the tapetum nigrum is fully differentiated, the implant may remain longer.

Notes: Summary Uncleaved eggs, eggs with 4, 32–64 blastomeres and blastulae were irradiated with different doses of UV-mixed light, only onesided-equatorial, -animal or -vegetativ. In no case did the UV-irradiation effect a statistically significant increase of whole or partial visceral inversions. These happened only after irradiation of young gastrulae, especially when the vegetative germ part with the blastopore was exposed.

Notes: Summary Experiments are described in which in early to late blastulae ofAmbystoma mexicanum (stages 7–8/9 Harrison) the animal, ectodermal “half” (zones I.II) was combined with the vegetative, endodermal yolk mass (zone IV) in various orientations, viz. in random orientation or with the dorso-ventral axes of the two components in identical, opposite or perpendicular orientation (0°, 180°, or 90° translocation respectively). The results demonstrate unequivocally that the dorso-ventral polarity of the induced mesoderm, and thus of the embryo, depends exclusively upon the inherent dorso-ventral polarity of the endoderm, whereas the grey crescent, a considerable part of which is located in the animal, ectodermal “half’, plays no causal role whatsoever. The results also show that the dorso-ventral polarity is inherent in the entire endodermal mass, but that the subsequent regional differentiation of the endoderm depends upon stimulating influences emanating from the surrounding mesoderm, the later nutritive yolk representing that part of the endoderm which normally does not come under the influence of the mesoderm, and therefore fails to receive the necessary stimulus for further differentiation. On the basis of these findings “Schultze's Umkehrexperiment” as studied byPenners andSchleip, Penners, andPasteels are reinterpreted, whileDalcq andPasteels' general developmental theory as well asCurtis' cortical grafting experiments are critically discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Discs of the foreleg ofCulex pipiens transplanted from the fourth instar of larvae into larval hosts of the same age differentiate normal adult organs. 2. Experiments in fragmentation indicate the position of the primordia of individual parts of the leg in the disc. In addition to this certain structural elements can be located within parts of the leg. 3. Among the majority of host larvae the operation results in a prolongation of the fourth larval instar. In whole discs as well as in disc fragments the sensillae often increase in number, or two groups of sensillae are formed. 4. The implanted disc fragments, after a prolonged presence in the larval host, may regenerate other regions of the disc. 5. Such new formations are the result of agenuine regeneration. The following reasons exclude the assumption of region-specific transdeterminations (Hadorn, 1966): a) Structures which are not initially included in the potencies of the cultivated disc fragments (allotypic differentiations —Hadorn, 1965a) could not be found. b) Regeneration occurs exclusively in proximo-distal direction. 6. Unlike cultures of the same kind inDrosophila, discs implanted into adult females show no extreme proliferative growth even after a stay in the host of several days. 7. In young adult hosts (0–13 h) several of the implanted discs are caused to form cuticular structures, or, in addition to this, imaginal bristles, trichomes and scales. Discs transplanted into older adult hosts (3 days) retain their larval character. 8. Only a small number of the discs implanted into adult hosts for 22 days are capable of differentiation of imaginal structures after retransplantation into host larvae. The other discs are either reduced inside the host larva or they only contain necrotic tissue.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Temporal and spatial aspects of postembryonic optic lobe development in a Lepidopteran,Danaus plexippus plexippus L., were analyzed using serial section reconstructions and H3-thymidine radioautography to display loci of cell production and progressive movements of populations of cells. 2. Optic lobe development begins early in larval life and is continuous without perceptible fluctuations corresponding to molting. The production of new cells begins during the first larval stages and is completed within a few days after pupation. 3. Development of adult optic centers appears to be independent of the larval optic center and also of adult eye development which does not get underway until pupation. At pupation the larval stemmata migrate toward the brain along the stemmatal nerve which persists and later serves as the framework by which ommatidial neurones reach the brain. 4. Ganglion cells of the adult optic lobe are produced by two coiled rod-like aggregates of neuroblasts, the inner and outer optic lobe anlagen, which lie lateral to the protocerebrum and are already present in the brain of the newly hatched larva. Neuroblasts of the anlagen divide both symetrically to produce more neuroblasts and asymmetrically to yield one neuroblast and one smaller cell, the ganglion-mother cell. Subsequent ganglion-mother cell divisions produce the new ganglion cells which are continuously displaced from the anlage by additional cells. Following pupation mitotic activity in the anlagen diminishes and neuroblasts degenerate. By the fourth day after pupation the anlagen have disappeared. 5. Fiber differentiation begins within a few days of cell formation. Fibers travel in bundles usually toward the center of the coiled anlagen where they form the neuropile masses. With contributions from a growing population of ganglion cells, fibermasses grow rapidly in size and complexity. 6. The geometric arrangement of anlagen, cortices, and neuropile is dynamic and interdependent. Progressive changes in anlagen configuration result from the combined effects of an increasing neuroblast population, growing optic cortices, and expanding fibermasses between the arms of the anlagen. In turn, the cortices and fibermasses which follow anlagen contours also change form. The complex of these parts, initially small and coiled, gradually enlarges and uncoils until at the time of anlagen degeneration the three optic fibermasses and their cortices are in approximately their final arrangement. 7. The outer anlage forms cells of the lamina cortex at its lateral rim and cells of the medulla at its medial rim. Cells of the lobula cortex are produced by strands of inner anlage neuroblasts extending laterally between the arms of the coiled outer anlage. 8. Cells of the medulla cortex are first seen during the second larval instar and several days later the medulla fibermass is discernible. Cortex and fibermass lie medial to the outer anlage which is moved progressively more laterally as more cells are produced. Cells labelled with H3-Td R at the beginning of the third instar become the tangential cells of the adult optic lobe. Those labelled at the fourth and fith stages occupy positions near the tangential cells, and those labelled at pupation ultimately lie at the lateral edge of the cortex. 9. Production of the lamina cortex begins later and procedes more slowly. Cells here are first apparent during the fourth instar and form a cellular cap covering the lateral part of the optic lobe. Labelling studies show that the earliest formed cells finally occupy the most posterior region of the lamina cortex. The lamina fibermass is first seen in the mid-fifth instar brain. 10. For most of larval life the lobula cortex forms a plug of cells just inside the lamina. While the anlage remains coiled, the first-formed cells are at the center of the plug, but ultimately they lie at the most medial part of the cortex. Production of lobula cells begins during the third instar and by the mid-fourth instar the lobula neuropile can be seen medial to them. 11. As a result of these studies with H3-Td R injection and fixation after varying intervals it has been possible to estimate the age of cells at a particular developmental stage. Because this material offers an organized arrangement of cells of a wide range of identifiable ages and levels of maturation within a single individual, it provides an excellent model for the study of progressive neurone differentiation.

Notes: Summary Homografts of gonads including fat-bodies show fusion of the fat-body with liver tissue. Thus, contact between gonad and liver is only indirect. The differentiation of the gametogonia follows the normal way of development. In case of ovary homografts auxocytes appear. Not later than 27 days after transplantation vascularization is reestablished. Homo- and autografts of gonads without fat-body show a quite different development of the gametogonia. When the gonads are broadly fused with liver tissue one notices karyolysis of the gametogonia nuclei within the gonad liver contact region already 7 days after transplantation. After 3–4 weeks the graft represents a cyst formed by connective tissue without any germ cells. Erythrocytes indicate vascularization. In the gonad partly fused with liver normal structure and mitosis in the gametogonia appear in that part of the transplant not attached to liver tissue. The present experiments suggest that the degeneration of germ cells is depending on their position to extragonadal tissue.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das Wachstum von Ratten- und Mäuseembryonen verläuft verschieden.
Notes: Summary The growth of rat and mouse embryos follows a different course. Volume and weight studies have shown that after 65% of the gestation period has elapsed, the mouse embryo is larger and heavier than the rat embryo. At birth, however, the rat is about 4 times as heavy as the mouse. The mouse has a more or less uniform growth over the entire gestation period, whereas the chief growth of the rat occurs in the last third of the gestation period. The rapid growth of the rat during this time does not result from an increment in water content; the dry matter undergoes an increase nearly proportional to that of the total body weight. The cells of the 17-day mouse embryo are somewhat smaller than those of the 19-day rat embryo, but the difference is small. On the other hand, the rate of mitosis in the 19-day rat is 20% higher than that of the comparable mouse embryo, in accordance with the faster growth which becomes established at this time in the rat. In contrast to growth, certain of the processes of differentiation occur earlier in the rat than in the mouse. This holds true, for example, for the formation of the crypts in the small intestine and the hair anlagen. The ossification of the cartilaginous skeleton begins at about the same time in the two rodents.

Notes: Summary Fine structural changes are described which occur in wing imaginal discs taken fromDrosophila prepupae at 120–128 hours of age. The first signs of cuticle formation appear at 124 hours in the tips of microvilli which extend into the peripodial cavity of the disc. A continuous epicuticular layer is evident at 126 hours, and the beginning of laminated endocuticle at 128 hours. Electron-lucid spaces appear in the apical regions of the cells at 122 and 124 hours. These are often clearly intercellular and contain membranous material, but sometime appear to be intracellular, or vacuoles. Their frequency decreases sharply after 122 hours, and begins to rise again at 126 hours. Junctional complexes between cells are present in all ages studied, consisting predominantly of long zonulae adhaerentes in the 120 h disc, of various attachment specializations, including septate desmosomes in the 128 h disc. Inclusions interpreted as lipid are found randomly scattered in the cytoplasm at 120 hours. They change in number, size, arrangement and location in later stages.Microtubules are widely distributed in discs of all ages reported; their function is thought to be cytostructural. A method of precise staging of prepupae based on ultrastructural criteria is proposed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. In homogenates of all tissues, including the hydrorhiza, thermostable factors are present capable of evoking heteropolar regeneration. Isolated heat-stable nematocyst toxins lead, in proper concentrations, to the same symptoms. A heat-labile substance with analogous effects is traceable in extracts of the nematocyst-free proboscis. 2. Extracts of gastrozooids and of blastostyles supply a substance which brings about the development of supernumerary tentacles. This substance, which was detectable only after separation of the extract by column chromatography, is digested by trypsin and seems to have a molecular weight in the range of peptide hormones. Heteropolar head-formations, which beyond that have been evoked after the first Chromatographie step on DEAE-Sephadex A-50, remained within the normal range of frequency after further purifying the substance with Sephadex G-25. 3. Basic proteins, extracted with 0.57 M NaCl at pH 6.8, and purified by Reineckeprecipitation and by chromatography, block any regeneration and evoke spasmic contractions. By means of discelektrophoresis eight (at pH 8.2) resp. twelve (at pH 4.3) electropositive proteins have been detectable. 4. Material of the hydrorhiza retains, when freeze-dried, its inductive capacity. 5. In the discussion of the results concerning the apical inducers, the gradient hypothesis is confronted with the concept of an induction sequence. Furthermore, it is explained, that the testing system chosen here and in similar works does not prove the existence of hypostomeinducing (“polarizing”) factors, since not only specific inducers but also inhibitors interfering with the dominance system will give rise to heteropolar regeneration.

Notes: Summary These experiments were carried out to determine the duration of DNA-synthesis in the cells of the developing wing discs ofEphestia kuehniella Z. For this purpose the double labeling technique was applied. Larvae of the last larval instar were injected first with3H-thymidine and than 1 1/2 or 6 hours later with14C-thymidine. During the growth phase from the 1st to the 7th day after the last larval moult, S-phase duration was found to be about 12 hours. In the prepupal stage, however, S-phase duration was measured to be 5.8 hours. These results were verified in different experimental conditions. It is suggested that the shift from “long” to “short” duration of the S-phase is controlled by Ecdyson. Cell proliferation within the wing discs is discussed using these data and the known cell counts. G2-phase was found to be variable lasting from 1 to several hours. It is suggested that the growth pattern and the differentiation of the imaginal discs can be controlled by variing G2-phases.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. In 52 experimental animals (Ambystoma mexicanum) with a body length of 7.5–8.5 cm (including tail) the right telencephalon hemisphere was extirpated and substituted by transplantation of a hemisphere which was taken from an animal of the same bodylength. The heads of all experimental animals were cut in horizontal serial-sections. The result of the transplantation was compared with control animals (resection of one hemisphere without transplantation). 2. After transplantation marked degenerative changes occur in the transplanted hemisphere, but large parts of the matrix regions of the transplant remain intact. Moreover, differentiated brain tissue could be demonstrated at every stage. From the 4th day after transplantation numerous mitoses were found in the transplanted matrix tissue, which lead to an increase in the mass of the parts of the transplant that have remained intact. 3. On the 35th day after operation the transplant is in contact with the regenerating N. olfactorius for the first time. Between the 120th and the 160th day after operation the transplant reaches approximately the size of a normal hemisphere but the shape of the transplanted hemisphere remains very irregular even on the 450th day after operation. 4. By planimetrical investigation of the hemisphere cuts in experimentation and control animals and by statistic evaluation of measurements it could be proved that inAmbystoma mexicanum the resected hemisphere can be replaced by hemisphere-homotransplantation to a great extent during the postembryonal period.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1. Hühnerkeime wurden am 3 1/2. Bruttag (Behandlungsgruppe I), am 4. Bruttag weitgehend spiegelbildlich ausgebildet.
Notes: Summary Chick embryos were treated with the cytostatic substance triethylenemelamine (TEM) on the 3 1/2th, 4th or 4 1/2th day of incubation (one injection per egg). One group of embryos was fixed in Bouin's solution on the 7th or between the 9th and 11th day of incubation for the comparative study of alterations of the external morphology. The majority of embryos was investigated for alterations in the cartilaginous skeleton after staining with methylene blue and subsequent clearing. This paper deals with the experimental technique, a general survey of the experimental material and the results obtained from the Bouin-fixed embryos. The analysis of the cartilaginous skeleton will be subject of later publications (parts II and III). The teratogenic dose of 7 μg TEM (administration into the air chamber, = „standard treatment“, fixation between 9th and 11th day) was-under the given experimental conditions — equivalent to the embryonal LD 50 when the treatment occurred on the 4th day. For the various stages of treatment (standard treatment at the 3 1/2th, 4th or 4 1/2th day, then fixation between 9th and 11th day of incubation) lethality decreases with increasing age of treatment. Injection of TEM into the yolk sac results in more marked malformations than does injection of the same dose into the air chamber. Treatment with 6–10 μg TEM (injection into the air chamber) or with 5–7 μg TEM (injection into the yolk sac) led to reduction of all dimensions of the body in all experimental embryos (including those with normal outer appearance). In general, the body dimensions were more markedly reduced, the more malformed an embryo was. After standard treatment of the three experimental stages and fixation on the 7th day of incubation the lengths of the head, of the trunk and of the hind legs respectively were more reduced, the earlier the treatment occurred. The outer malformations characteristic for the present experimental material are the following: oedema in various forms, enlarged and anteriorly transposed umbilicus, umbilical hernia, bending, torsion and reduction of extremities (in most cases combined with oligodactylism), reduction and bending downwards of the upper beak, clefts between nasal opening and border of the beak, cleft palate of various degrees, strong reduction of the lower beak, reduction of size of the eyes, suppression of scleral papillae, reduction of eyelids, retardation in the development of embryonal pterylosis, suppression of feather anlagen. Apart from metric criteria, the development of nasal clefts is treatment-phase dependent. Such a phase specifity is recognizable in the outer appearance of strongly malformed hind legs too. The alterations due to TEM treatment between the 3 1/2the and 4 1/2th day of incubation on both sides of the sagittal plane are mirrorimages of a high degree.

Notes: Summary Three different types of vesicles present before fertilization in the sea urchin egg were examined. The “a-type” corresponds to rough endoplasmic vesicles; the vesicles of “b-type” are rather smooth but may have vestigial granules within their membranes; the “c-type” belongs to the multivesicular bodies. Upon fertilization, vesicles appear in the outer cortical zone (vesicles of “d-type”). The majority of them arises by budding from the vesicles ofb-type. The budding occurs mainly at the basis of or within ridges of the cell surface; they may also be present in broader microvilli. The distance between the ridges was varied by early transfer of the eggs to calcium-free sea water. An inducing effect of the ridges on location of theb-vesicles and on the formation ofd-vesicles by budding could thus be demonstrated. Thed-vesicles appearing upon fertilization resemble in size and structure Golgi vesicles formed by budding from Golgi bodies present in the interior cortex or below it. Also theb-vesicles have their counterpart in the Golgi bodies. Theb andd-vesicles are therefore regarded as a Golgi system in which theb-vesicles represent dispersed Golgi bodies and thed- vesicles Golgi vesicles. Thed-vesicles may be designated as cortical Golgi vesicles, (c.G.v.). In thec-vesicles i.e. the multivesicular bodies (m.v.b.), a nucleid was observed which may be subdivided. A compartmentation of m.v.b. was observed which may lead to a detachment of vesicles of about the same size as thed-vesicles (c.G.v.) but probably of a different character. The differentiation of the fertilization membrane of the sea urchin egg occurs in two stages: the assembly and the solidification stage. The tentative conclusion is drawn that a secretion from the c.G.v. functions as an agent in the solidification process. The c.G.v. may also act upon the hyaline layer, both in its early formation and its maintenance during the course of embryonic development.

Notes: Summary The problem whether the blood circulation influences or determines the asymmetry of Nuclei habenulae was tested by removing the heart-anlage of the embryo ofTriturus alpestris. The resulting larvae without any blood circulation developed their normal asymmetry of habenulae. Isolates from the head region of neurulae ofTriturus alpestris, consisting of cephalic ecto and mesoderm, sometimes also of entoderm, under favorable conditions could develop brains with Nuclei habenulae. These were normal, asymmetric in spite of missing the blood circulation and other asymmetrical organs.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1. 3. Die Zusammensetzung des Pigments ist dosisabhängig. Die Daten stehen in Einklang mit der Annahme, da\ das Pigment aus 2 Teilgemischen,A undB, besteht, deren Verhältnis,B∶:A, mit der Dosis steigt. 4.
Notes: Summary 1. In order to interpret the results of experiments involving the injection of the ommochrome-precursor 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HOK) into pupae of the red eyed strain and measurement of pigment synthesis (Muth, 1967, 1968), a model is proposed, based on the following assumptions: a) The presence of cytoplasmatic granules containing RNA is a necessary condition for pigment synthesis. b) The granules originate from preformed material, if the amount of 3-HOK rises in the presence of this material or if the amount of this material rises in the presence of the precursor. The amount of the material being transformed into granules depends on the value of the stationary and on the hight of the rise of the changed variable. The dependence on the precursor is such that the originating granules are saturated by the precursor. c) After a fast synthesis the preformed material becomes inactivated, regardless of whether having been transformed into granules or not. Though the amount of 3-HOK decreases, the rate of inactivation provides a lasting saturation of the granules. 2. The model allows the derivation of a function, which describes the dependence of the rate of ommochrome synthesis on the injected amount of the precursor. 3. The composition of the pigment being synthesized depends on the injected dose. The results are consistent with the assumption that the pigment consists of 2 mixtures,A′ andB, the ratio of which,B∶:A′ rises with the injected dose. 4. The experimentally obtained values of the mixtureA′ fit the function, calculated on the basis of the proposed model.

Notes: Summary During maturation of the cricket oocyte principally r-RNA and little t-RNA are formed. Furthermore it is possible to label an RNA-fraction that can be referred to as m-RNA according to its velocity of sedimentation in a sucrose density gradient. Data are discussed showing that the r-RNA formed during oogenesis is probably stable at least up to the stage of yolk cleavage. The incorporation of labelled aminoacids into dechorionated eggs starts during very early cleavage stages, whereas an incorporation of labelled uridine is scarcely detectable. This indicates that although protein synthesis proceeds, practically no measurable RNA synthesis exists. From these data it is concluded that in the cricket egg — just as in amphibian and sea urchin eggs — the first protein synthesis proceeds mainly on preexisting m-RNA.

Notes: Summary 1. Cellular morphogenesis during postembryonic brain development inDanaus plexippus plexippus L. was examined using histological techniques including radioautography. 2. The production of new neurones is continuous throughout larval and pupal stages and shows no fluctuations corresponding to ecdysis. Glial cell production, on the other hand, occurs at the time of molting. 3. New ganglion cells are formed by the division of neuroblasts found in aggregates or isolated among larval ganglion cells. Asymmetrical neuroblast divisions yield one neuroblast and one ganglion-mother cell which then divides at least once to form the new ganglion cells. Such divisions begin earlier inDanaus than in other investigated Lepidoptera. Symmetrical divisions yielding two neuroblasts also occur, but only among aggregated neuroblasts. 4. Radioautographs of brains fixed at progressive intervals after Tritiated Thymidine (H3TdR) injection have permitted description of the basic pattern by which cells of the adult brain cortex are laid out and progressive changes in the relationship of new ganglion cells derived from a single neuroblast. Ganglion-mother cells are deposited between the neuroblast and the neuropile, thus forming a row of cells which move the neuroblast progressively farther from the neuropile. New ganglion cells produced by ganglion-mother cell mitoses, which usually are oriented at 45° angles to the neuropile, expand the cell cluster. Differentiating fibers of these cells are apparent within a few days of their production and seem to enter the neuropile in one bundle. Later with increased neuropile volume and further cell differentiation the cells are no longer clumped and thus are not recognizable as offspring of a single neuroblast. 5. Neuroblasts found scattered among the larval ganglion cells arise from cells near the neuropile. These cells, at first indistinguishable from their neighbors, gradually assume the size and ready stainability of neuroblasts and subsequently divide according to the pattern described above. 6. Scattered neuroblasts degenerate beginning shortly after pupation and have completely disappeared by the end of the fourth day. 7. Except in the developing optic lobe, glial cell numbers increase through the proliferation of already existing glial cells. All glial cells show H3TdR uptake during a 12 hour period surrounding each larval-larval molt and for a somewhat longer period after pupation. However, in the larval stages mitotic figures were seen only among glial I, II, and IV. Glial I cells divide through the entire last larval stage and for two days following pupation. Large irregular mitoses seen among glial III cells at pupation indicate that these cells are probably polyploid. 8. In the newly forming adult optic lobe glial II, III, and IV cells appear to develop from preganglion cells or cells indistinguishable from them. These cells gradually stain more and more darkly, segregate into the normal glial positions, and subsequently divide in accord with other glial cells. 9. At the end of the fifth instar the perineurium (glial I cells), which begins to thicken during the third larval instar, is multilayered and contains many vacuolar cells. Just prior to pupation the neurilemma begins to disintegrate and during the next five days all but the cells closest to the brain disappear. Hemocytes are seen to engulf portions of the disintegrating neurilemma and already degenerating perineurial cells, but do not seem to engulf live cells. The glial I cells remaining adjacent to the brain secrete a new neurilemma. 10. There is no evidence for mass destruction of larval ganglion cells by either autolysis or phagocytosis, and only in the antennal center is there evidence of degeneration of larval cells (Nordlander andEdwards, in press).

Notes: Summary Asexual, non-budding hydras were treated in the 1∶75000 solution of E 39 solubile (Bayer). They were feeding, growing and budding for six days. The interstitial cells found in the ectoderm at the moment of treatment differentiated into cnidoblasts during that period. The cells that happened to be in the gastroderm at that time, differentiated into interstitial cells which were not able to cross the mesoglea due to the E 39 activity. In the gastroderm a great number of cnids appeared. These observations support the hypothesis that in normal hydra the interstitial cells formed by the dedifferentiation of gland cells pass into the ectoderm. There they are transformed into cnidoblasts which pass into the mesoglea. Prom the gastroderm the cnidoblasts come into the ectoderm of the tentacles through endodermal cells and the coelenteric fluid.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. In contact with tissue of blastostyles buds of gasterozooids and regenerating gasterozooids will transform into blastostyles. The inductive capacity within blastostyles decreases from apex to base. Hypostomes with gasterozooid-like properties, which may frequently occur at the basal cut of isolated blastostyles, will transform into the homologous blastostyle structures in a sequence following that inductive gradient. 2. The spontaneous transformation of regenerating gasterozooids into reproductive polyps, which could be observed during wintertime, can be increased by α-ketoglutarate (5×10−4 M/L), isocitrate (5×10−3 M/L), colcemide (3×10−6 M/L) and, with only weak effect, by CO2 increased top=2–4% Atm. With increasing dosages optimum lines could be determined. The transformable state of regeneration starts when tentacle formation takes place. By applying α-ketoglutarate in stepwise decreased concentrations 75 ppc transformations have been obtainable. 3. If similarly applied in graduated dosages chromatographically separated blastostyle ectraxts also increase the rate of transformation. The causative factor is to be found in the range of fractions that also contains the tentacle-inducing substance.

Notes: Summary Metanephros of mouse embryos was explanted at the 11th day of gestation and culturedin vitro on the surface of a plasma clot for up to 7 days. Microscopic sections were cut from cultures fixed every day; the differentiation process was followed and compared with development under normal conditions. The ureter branches out and gives rise by means of dichotomous division to straight canals, lined by a light, columnar epithelium, which correspond to collecting ducts. Around the blind ends of their terminal branches, mesenchyme condenses and forms caps, in which the layer of cells in contact with the ducts acquires a palisade-like appearance. Subsequently, vesicles differentiate from the caps, representing the first rudiment of the nephron. The next stage is the change of the vesicle to an S-shaped tubule, the “lower” end of which becomes crescentic or bowl-shaped and is the first anlage of Bowman's capsule: the “upper” end connects with the collecting duct. The developmentin vitro goes on at a much slower rate than in normal conditions, and the nephron does not go beyond the stage of S-shaped tubule; however, the general pattern of development is the same in both situations, except for the absence in culture of blood vessels and therefore also of the glomerular anlage. It should be assumed that glomerular vessels are not necessary in order to shape the first anlage of Bowman's capsule. The connection of the nephron with the collecting duct, generally recognized to occur at the S-tubule stage, was sometimes already found at the vesicle stage, both in cultures and in normal development.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Vom 3.–6. III.3.d). Seine Konzentration steigt im Verlaufe des 6. Tages p.c. stark an (s.III.2.b). Sein Molekulargewicht liegt über 70000 (s. III.4). Tage p.c. an nachgewiesen (s. III.2.c).
Notes: Summary Between the 3rd and 6th day post coitum the dry substance of uterine fluid contains nearly 60% peptide chains, on the 6th day 19 h p.c. only 35%. The remaining 40 and 65% resp. consist mainly of carbohydrates (cf. III.1). By means of disc electrophoresis, thin layer chromatography following hydrolysis and molecular sieve chromatography, we were able to characterize 4 uterine specific proteins, 2 of which are carbohydrate rich glycoproteins. Their relative concentrations were determined between 0 and 8 day p.c. (of. III.2): Glycoprotein I can already be found during oestrus. Its concentration increases slightly from the 3rd to the 5th day p.c., more rapidly up to the 6th day 6 h p.c., and decreases later (of.III.2b). The molecular weight is estimated to be around 50,000 (cf.III.4). Postalbumin as well as Uteroglobin can be found shortly after ovulation. Its concentration stays nearly constant between 3rd and 6th day p.c., and decreases during the 6th day p.c. (of.III.2b). Its molecular weight is in the same range as that of Uteroglobin, nearly 30,000 (of.III.4. Uteroglobin is most probably free of carbohydrates. Its concentration increases rapidly between 16 and 40 h p.c., slightly until the 5th day p.c., and decreases later (cf.III.2b). At 6th day p.c. about 50% of the peptide chains of uterine fluid are Uteroglobin (cf.III.2.g). Glycoprotein II is not secreted before the 6th day p.c. It has a comparativly high content of galactose (cf.III.3.d). Its concentration increases rapidly during the 6th day p.c. (cf.III.2.b). The moleculare weight is higher than 70,000 (cf.III. 4). These proteins and glycoproteins have also been found inblastocoelic fluid after the 5th day p.c. (cf.III.2.c). Aftersuperovulation induced by hormones, and natural mating, the pregnancy specific protein pattern is not fully developed (cf.III.2.d). Inpseudopregnancy, triggered by mating with vasectomized males, the same proteins as in normal pregnancy were found from the 6th day 6 h to the 6th day 19 h p.c. If no blastocysts are implanted, the protein pattern of the 6th day 19 h p.c. persists nearly unchanged until the 9th day p.c. (cf.III.2.e). Duringimplantation uterus and blastocyst lumens are filled with serum proteins, which tend to cover up the secretion proteins (cf.III.2.f). 9 constituents of carbohydrates could be identified in uterine fluid. There was no evidence for freemonohexoses, particularly free glucose. Theoligomere carbohydrates were free or bound to proteins (cf.III.3.). We were able to separate Glycoprotein I, Glycoprotein II, Albumin + Uteroglobin with Sephadex G 150 and G 75 SF (cf.III.4). 21 freeamino acids were found in uterine and blastocoelic fluid by means of thin layer chromatography. The concentrations of amino acids in uterine fluid were comparable to those of serum. The dry substance of uterine fluid contains more glycine, alanine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid than that of serum (cf.III.5). The possible role of amino acids in thenutrition of the blastocyst and the possible influence of uterine specific proteins and glycoproteins onnutrition and morphogenesis of the rabbit embryo were discussed.

Notes: Summary This paper deals with the influence of environmental factors, particularly those that may be expected to change the rate of growth in the larval period, on the homoeotic wing-like outgrowths in the eyes of the strainloboid-ophthalmoptera (see Ouweneel, 1969a, b). The penetrance of the homoeotic effect increases with maternal age (Table 1); Delcour (1968) furnished evidence that there is a relation between maternal age and growth rate of tissues in the larva. Penetrance is inversely related to temperature; at low temperatures the development of the whole larva is strongly retarded, but the growth of the eye disc is probably less retarded, so that it grows relatively more than at higher temperatures. It is notable that the temperature-sensitive period (24–60 h after hatching, at 25° C; Fig. 1) precedes, and coincides with, the period of abnormal hyperplasia in the disc (Ouweneel, 1969b). Acetamide, given in the food, enhances the number of facets so that even the wild type eye size may be reached; in proportion to its concentration it moreover strongly increases the penetrance of the wing-like outgrowths. At higher concentrations, however, when eye enlargement is maximal, the penetrance of the outgrowths decreases again (Figs. 2–5). The optimal concentration (at which the penetrance is maximal) is higher at higher temperatures (Figs. 2–5; cf. Fig. 7). The sensitive period for acetamide extends from about 0–55 h after hatching (at 25° C) (Fig. 6). Uracil increases the penetrance of the homoeotic effect (Table 2). Sodium tetraborate seems to increase the penetrance of the homoeotic outgrowths, but to reduce their expressivity slightly at higher concentrations. Starvation (Tabel 3) and farnesol medium prolong the larval period, but do not show clear-cut effects on the homoeotic phenomenon, probably because they only postpone metamorphosis, and do not retard the whole of larval development (compare temperature effect, above). UV irradiation influenced penetrance, but lower dosages had a greater effect than higher ones; the former suppressed the homoeotic effect at early larval ages, but stimulated it at later ages; this points to the occurrence of two separate sensitive periods for UV (Table 4). In all experiments clear-cut sexual differences in sensitivity were observed, which may be ascribed to the sex-linked location of theophthalmoptera modifier (Ouweneel, 1969a). Evidence can be found in the literature that enhanced proliferation is a prerequisite for many homoeotic phenomena in the broad sence (cf. Fig. 8). The present study and previous data show that also homoeotic mutations often interact with agents causing changes in growth rate; it is possible that the basic action of all homoeotic mutations has to do with such changes.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. The total amount of nucleic acids as well as DNA and RNA were analysed biochemically in embryos of the troutsS. irideus andS. trutta fario from cleavage to early differentiation stages. In the same developmental stages ribonucleoprotein (RNA and basic protein) was investigated cytochemically at different embryonic regions. The phase of gastrulation was of main interest. 2. The results of both methods show that the quantity of RNA and ribonucleoprotein increases beginning with themorula stage. The maximum is reached in theblastula. 3. When during the blastoderm stage RNA and basic protein are stained histochemically a characteristic gradient of intensity can be determined. From the increase of RNA and basic protein in periblast and blastoderm and from the gradual staining effect itself one can conclude that RNA and basic protein is transported from the yolk through the periblast into the embryo. There should exist atransfer of substances possibly as ribonucleoprotein particles. The limited time of this transfer during early embryogenesis shows that this phenomenon is not the result of energetic yolk utilization but it is connected with the following differentiation processes. 4. After injection of actinomycin D into the blastocoel development is stopped at the beginning ofgastrulation. Therefore a new synthesis of messenger RNA should be necessary for further development. 5. The ribosomal RNA is constant duringgastrulation but the amount of basic protein decreases in this time. During neurulation and the beginning differentiation phase a new increase of RNA takes place but now the quantity of basic protein does not change. 6. In contrast to investigations of the Urodele development in the trout embryo no change of RNA and basic protein is found during gastrulation in the invaginating material and the covering neuroectoderm. Therefore no transfer of substances takes place between the two blastemas. There are many differences in the embryonic development of Urodela and Teleosts. Nevertheless in both classesa relation between the yolk system and the embryonic blastema results in the beginning of thedifferentiation processes. This results point to the possible morphogenetic importance of the yolk system.

Notes: Summary The teratogenic effects on chick embryos of chloroacetophenone (CAP), a specific sulfhydryl blocking agent, are known to be reversible by a subsequent treatment with cysteine. However, cysteamine, the decarboxylation product of cysteine has been found to be unable to ameliorate the syndrome caused by CAP. It is suggested that CAP may act by binding the sulfhydryl of free cysteine in the cells of the organizer, thus indicating that cysteine may act as an inducing stimulus in primary organizer action. Post-nodal pieces of chick blastoderm exposed to the action of cysteine for 6 hours show differentiation of axial embryonic structures. Cysteamine has no such stimulatory effects on post-nodal pieces. This finding seems to further support the conclusion that cysteine may act as an inducing stimulus in primary organizer action.

Notes: Summary Observations on the formation of nuclear membranes and of the changing ultrastructural appearance during mitosis in developing eggs ofLocusta migratoria are reported. 1. Nuclear membranes are formed while the mitotic chromosomes are still in a condensed state. How exactly the membranes are formed, is not yet understood. Vesicles which occur in the interchromosomal space might participate in the membrane formation but they might just as well appear simultaneously with the membranes. 2. Depending on the developmental stage of the egg, differences in the way in which the interphase nucleus is built up, are found. In early cleavage, karyomeres are formed from single chromosomes which are individually covered by a double membrane. These karyomeres expand by uncoiling their chromosomal mass and subsequently fuse to form one nucleus. In embryonic cells of the germinal rudiment the double envelope is formed only after the chromosomes have clustered and have formed the telophase figure. 3. Nuclear membranes are formed in close contact with the condensed chromosomes. Only after the membranes have been built up, the chromosomes lose their electron density. Chromosomes in early developmental stages (cleavage) uncoil in karyomeres, although the mitotic cycle may only have reached anaphase. In cells from later stages (germinal rudiment), where the chromosomes cluster before membrane formation occurs, the membrane formation as well as the uncoiling are postponed to telophase. This behavior may be related to changes in the duration of the mitotic cycle, indicating progressive differentiation. 4. During the growth of karyomeres, chromosomes lose most of their electron density. Dense cores of 0.2 Μ in diameter, however, persist in the karyomeres of cleavage energides and may prove the existence of a chromosomal axis in certain mitotic stages. 5. Nucleoli are not found in karyomeres during early cleavage stages. Prenucleoli are observed to form at telophase in the later stages of development. More prenucleoli seem to occur in telophase than do nucleoli in interphase nuclei.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary The imaginal labial gland ofFormica pratensis develops from three clearly distinguishable tissues of the larval gland: a) the common duct (UAG), including an epidermal part and the “Bulbus” region; b) the paired imaginai ring (IR); and c) the most anterior part of the paired duct (PAG), the so-called “apical cells” (AZ; see Fig. 1). Together these tissues represent the imaginal gland anlage. The larval common duct gives rise to the whole imaginal discharging system (consisting of a common and a paired duct). The imaginal reservoir is formed by the anterior cells of the imaginal ring, the size of which increases by cell multiplication. The posterior cells of the imaginal ring and the apical cells associate to form a so-called “agglomeration” which, after pupation, grows out to a system of glandular tubuli in such a manner that an apical cell is situated at the top of each tubule. — The developmental capacity of various fragments of the prepupal gland imaginal anlage was tested by implanting them into the body cavity of host prepupae of the same age. Within 1–14 days after transplantation the differentiated implants were studied histologically. — Development of transplanted complete imaginal gland anlagen corresponds to developmentin situ with two exceptions: 1. While differentiating into the imaginal discharging system, the larval UAG is lengthened only a little. 2. Instead of differentiating an imaginal salivarium, the epidermal tissue at the anterior end of the UAG closes to form a vesicle. — With the beginning of metamorphosis the imaginal anlage shows a mosaic determination and no regulation may occur: Though isolated, the three gland regions and parts of them develop according to their prospective significance. The size of the imaginal reservoir, for instance, depends on the number of available imaginai cells. — Differentiation of imaginai gland tubuli is possible only in presence of apical cells. One apical cell enables the surrounding imaginal cells to form one tubule; if the number of apical cells of an anlage is reduced, only less glandular tubuli are developed. — The apical cells show their tubuli forming effect only if they are in immediate cell contact to the imaginal cells; on the other hand it is not necessary for the tubuli forming cells to be in connection with the reservoir.

Notes: Summary Individual differences in developmental stages of mouse embryos of the two related strains C57 BL/6JHanFfm and C57BL/10JFfm during the period between day VIII and day X p.c. have been examined. The following results were obtained: 1. A remarkable variability in the number of somites could be stated in embryos of different litters but also in embryos of the same litter, especially at stages day IX and day IX +12 h. 2. There was a close relationship between the number of somites and progresses of rotation from the S- to the C-shape. Incidence of pre-rotation stages was higher in embryos of strain C57BL/6 than in embryos of strain C57BL/10. 3. Individual differences were stated in the developmental stages of neural groove and upper limb buds. The degree of differentiation and closure of the neural groove was more progressive in strain C57BL/10. 4. Individual differences were also registered in the appearance and development of the following primordia: eye, ear, heart, thyroid, lung, liver, ureter and the pronephric ducts. 5. The body length of the embryos was closely related to the number of somites.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary The experimental results ofGeyer-Duszynska (1959), speaking in favour of three ooplasmic factors localized in the pole plasm, in the basophilic oosome material contained therein, as well as in the periplasm of the posterior egg pole ofWachtliella persicariae, suggested to investigate for further factor regions with other technical means. Since ooplasmic factor regions may be indicated by initial regions of morphogenetic development, kinematics were used for in vivo analysis of early embryonic development by means of time-lapse motion pictures. Electron microscopic investigations added to the micro-morphological aspects of plasmic systems within the egg for a better understanding of nature and effectivity of ooplasmic factors. Cleavage nuclei do not move exclusively by means of their spindle activity during anaphase movement. The nuclear envelope of cleavage energides consists of either two unit membranes with pores or of many tube-like as well as membranous elements. The appearence of a complex multi-layered nuclear envelope coincides with the moving phase of energides, an observation which is discussed in relation to the possibility of active nuclear movement. During late preblastoderm the entoplasm contains horse-shoe-shaped and multilobed vitellophagues with dense karyoplasm. With the blastoderm formed, the nuclei may become pycnotic, their membranes fragmenting at the same time. These fragments probably are piled up to form annulated membranes. The pole plasm does not show specific structures apart from the oosome material, contained therein. It is free of yolk material and nearly exclusively consists of ground plasm. The basophilic oosome material within the pole plasm is not surrounded by any membranes. It consists of numerous ribosome-like units and is restricted to the plasm of the future pole cells. The micro structure of the oosome material is preserved at least till the germ band has reached its maximal length. The cell membranes develop by invagination of the oolemma which penetrates into the egg interior. While pole cells and blastoderm cells become tied off, the ground plasm possibly participates in the growing-in process of the cell membranes by developing fibrous differentiations at the terminal extensions of oolemma folds. There is no clear cut limitation between periplasm and entoplasm. The periplasm which is without yolk material, appears rich in ground plasm and does not contain specific ultra structures. During the process of cleavage external ooplasmic regions of the egg are shifted in rhythmical pulsation parallel to its longer axis by a maximum of about 6 % of the entire egg length. Topographic statements of certain areas concerning any anlage therefore are bound to suffer from an adequate lack of exactness. Since comparable shifting processes within the egg plasm probably are common in insects other thanWachtliella, they should be considered as a certain source of error. At 60+−3 % of egg length as measured from its posterior pole, there exists a cleavage centre, an initial region of intravitelline cleavage and of repeated mitotic waves. Adjacent to the middle of the egg follows an initial region of germ band formation (differentiation centre). By their electron microscopic appearance, both developmental centres are not characterized by specific ultra structures. The factor region at the posterior pole exclusively represents an initial region of cell wall formation during superficial cleavage. Other than any experimental marking procedure the technique of time-lapse motion pictures permits to evaluate quantitatively and without artificial interfering the shifting of presumptive segment material during morphogenetic movements of the germ band. The embryonic material of the blastoderm at the egg equator is used for building up the first abdominal segment. The prothoracal and mesothoracal material at about 60% of the egg length stays in site when the germ band becomes extended lengthwise. Closely behind the differentiation centre there is a region of maximal extension as well as of shortening of the germ band. No proliferous growth of segments (segment formation zone) has been found.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary In a first experiment 30 fertile eggs of Moscovy ducks were dipped in a solution of 40 mg diethylstilbestrol/100 ml ethanol (95 %) at day 13 of incubation. The treatment caused total suppression of penis development but reduced hatchability to 30%. In a second trial 46 fertile eggs were dipped at day 8 of incubation. In this case only subtotal suppression of the penis was induced; hatchability reached 89 %. In both experiments the left gonad of the males developed to an ovotestis but returned slowly to normal testis structure. The total suppression of the penis and of the bulla ossea was irreversible even after the testis had reached again their normal androgen secretion. There was no influence of the treatment on the marked difference in growth of male and female ducklings.

Notes: Summary Roundish pieces were removed from the lateral polar region of young gastrulae ofTriturus alpestris. These consisted mainly of undetermined ectoderm and partly of ventral mesoderm. The majority developed into normal embryos or embryos with minor abnormalities. After injury of the left side (101 cases) the gut situs of the larvae was normal in 85.2% median in 6.9% and inverted in 7.9%. When injured on the right side (106 cases), the larval gut situs was regular in 79,2%, median in 8.5% and inverted in 12.3%. These results support the statements of v.Kraft (1968b) who also found a higher rate of situs inversus after irridiation of the right side. In contrast, defects on the left side are more effective in other regions and different stages of the embryo. The higher sensitivity for defects of the left side in the organizer region (v.Woellwarth, 1950) could be confirmed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Pupae of the greater wax moth,Galleria mellonella L., were exposed to x-rays with different doses, to a certain wounding, or to both treatments in different combinations. The extent of damage was measured as the decrease of the frequency of ecdysis. 2. The factors of damage after the different treatments were analyzed by partial irradiation and histological methods. The results of the histological investigation were compared with normal development of important organs of theGalleria pupa, particularly of the ecdysial glands and the corpora allata. 3. The resistance to x-rays of theGalleria pupa increases about twentyfold during the seven days of the pupal instar. In a given pupal age and after a given dose the radiation damage depends on a direct effect on differentiable tissues and the radiation-induced inability of the hormonal system to repair such a damage. 4. Wounding evokes a systemic response of the pupa. First this results — as indicated by histological examination of the hormonal glands — from an increased amount of juvenile hormone in relation to ecdyson. Secondly the wound possibly causes an excessive release of neurosecretion in the sense of a stress reaction. The response to wounding becomes maximal on the third and sixth day of the pupal instar. The first maximum of sensitivity on the third pupal day is thought to be correlated-with a critical event on the fourth pupal day, namely the withdrawing of the epidermis from the pupal cuticle. The second maximum of sensitivity on the sixth pupal day coincides with the second maximum of activity of the corpora allata at the end of the fifth pupal day. 5. A combination damage is always followed by a relatively large decrease of the ecdysial frequency, independent of the effects of the single injuries. The intervals between and the sequence of the treatments have no influence. The combination damage is particularly an amplification of the effect of wounding caused by radiation. 6. The activity of the corpora allata on the first two days of the pupal instar simultaneously with the ecdysial glands leads to renewed discussion of the “classical scheme”, in which the relation of ecdyson and juvenile hormone determines the following moulting to a larval, pupal, or imaginal moult.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The dispersion of preys carried byFormica polyctena workers along their tracks is the greater they have been discovered further from the ant hill. A hypothesis is put forward according to which such dispersion would be accounted for by the difficulties of the burdened ants to orient themselves with the olfactive and visual references they use normally. The same hypothesis permits to explain the results obtained here, in detour experiments and elsewhere, in the statistical analysis of prey carrying speed.

Notes: Summary A field method of assessing the impact of ants as predators of forets insect pests, using a special apparatus, is described. A natural nest in the field is surrounded by an artificial barrier; the ants are made to enter it through a tube which permits only oneway movement. This tube passes through a sampling machine designed to collect the ants, together with prey they are carrying, at a precise fraction of each hour during the whole day. The machine can also be used in the laboratory with artificial nests.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The present study deals with a wasps' nest underground, the wasps under observation beingParavespula vulgaris L. We essentially observed a sample of 50 workers from the moment they were born to when they died. Some did not live so long as the others; consequently, in order to have homogeneous results, we only took into account the activity of the workers living 10 days at least. We were most careful to keep an even temperature of 30°C within the nest, so that the wasps' activity might be as near average as possible. We were thus able to follow the evolution of several types of activities and pauses too:- - toilet; - care of the larvae; - trophallais; - building; - outing; - resting on the brood; - resting in a cell. Those tasks take up more or less time in each worker's life according to its age. The curves show how the different tasks are distributed according to the wasps' age. Therefore we think all these activities can be observed all through a worker's life. The same worker is able to go through any activity the same day, furthermore any time in its life too. One activity seems to be an exception from what we could observe, and that is: building. We did notice this latter activity is quite precisely limited, and limited to one precise period in the wasp's life. The matter to be cleared up now is the determinism of the co-ordination of the activities of all the workers in the colony.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Schedorhinotermes derosus (Hill) is a facultative harvester, and forages in the open, at night, for dry and green grass. It also attacks dry wood in a manner similar to that of otherSchedorhinotermes. 2. Major and minor soldiers vibrate the head vertically, producing a loud rattle of approximately 40 cycles per second. This may form part of an alarm system correlated with the unsual pattern of foraging

Notes: Abstract Lists of aphids and associated ants and parasites recognized in Iraq in 1968 are given. On this base, some factors affecting the relationship are reviewed and documented. The attendance-range of ants and relation of parasites were found to be influenced by distribution, microhabitat, honeydew, shape of aphid colony and host range of parasites. Aphids, attending-ants and parasites associated withQuercus sp. are used as a demonstration.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Histochemical methods applied to the fat body ofFormica rufa queens show during the postembryonnic development, the following results: 1 Synthesis of lipids, glycogen and protein, successively occur in the cytoplasm of larval adipose cells. At the time of cocoon spinning, the energetic reserves (glycogen and mainly lipids) regress. During the nymphosis, the proteins are used for the histogenesis of the imaginal organs; yet, part of the proteins synthetised by the prenymph is transformed by the nymph into lipids, or constitutes the protein reserves of the swarming imago. 2 The nitrogenous products, which are copious for the larva, undergo transformations during the nymphosis, but reappear in microscristallin form at the hatching.

Description / Table of Contents: Conclusions and summary The study of the interation between thepygmæa queens on one hand and between thepygmæa queens and the parasitic queens on the other hand shows clearly: 1° The competition to obtain access to the food (through the trophallactic exchanges with the workers) shows in the purepygmæa colonies with many queens a diminution of the individual fecondity of the queens. 2° The presence of parastic queensxene orgrassei reduces the laying of the host by half. 3° As regard to the fecondity thegrassei queen may be compared to half apygmæa queen. Considered as a real queen by the workers she stimulates them in return: so owing to the excellent physiological state of the workers she has an abundant laying in pure rearings. In rearings mixed withpygmæa there appears the same kind of competition as amongpygmæa queens with a diminution of the fecondity as a consequence. 4° The workers don't pay much attention to thexene queens which in return don't stimulate these workers. So the queens are badly fed and lay few eggs in the pure rearings. In the mixed rearings the workers whose physiological state is improved by the presence ofpygmæa queens feed betterxene queens and the latter lay eggs in increasing numbers. These results also show the existence of evolutive serie in whichgrassei is closer to the common hostpygmæa thanxene.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. The production and elimination of supplementary (or replacement) reproductives were studied in small laboratory colonies. Most supernumerary reproductives were eliminated during the first three days after their apparition. 2. It could be shown that the supplementary (and primary) reproductives participate actively in the elimination process: in the course of many short attacks other reproductives are injured. Like all injured individuals they then become victims of the cannibalism of larvae and nymphs. 3. Elimination is carried out on the whole more vigorously by the females than by the males. This is especially apparent when reproductives of the opposed sex are eliminated. 4. Reproductives with amputated antenae do not actively take part in elimination. This leads to the conclusion that the reproductives give off odours (olfactive pheromones) which induce the elimination behaviour. Sex-specific as well as individual odours seem to be recognized and distinguished by the reproductives.

Notes: Summary Propagation of Love waves due to a point source in an axially symmetric heterogeneous layer lying between two homogeneous half-spaces is studied. The variation of Lamé's parameters and the density in the layer is assumed to be of the type $$\frac{\lambda }{{\lambda _0 }} = \frac{\mu }{{\mu _0 }} = \frac{1}{{(1 + \alpha z)}},\frac{\varrho }{{\varrho _{_0 } }} = \frac{1}{{(1 + \alpha z)^2 }}$$ where α is a constant andz is the distance measured from one of the interfaces into the layer. The vector wave equation is separable in this case and the solution is obtained in terms ofWhittaker's function. Using the asymptotic approximation forWhittaker's function, an approximate solution is obtained to the first power in α. This agrees with the solution obtained directly by neglecting the squares and higher powers of α at each stage.

Notes: Summary From the conservation of the mass of the earth including the hydrosphere it can be concluded that continental growth has been connected with subcrustal flow from the ocean toward the continents. Calculations show that the volume of ocean bottom subsidence nearly equals to the volume of the uplifted continental masses above the level of the primeval ocean bottom. The sea level has not changed appreciably since Precambrian. Change of ocean bottom topography and emergence of continents do not effect global sea level. Transgression and regression are figurative terms and really indicate subsidence resp. uplift of the continental crust blocks around the shoreline.

Notes: Summary It is in the hope of establishing a theorem contributing to the origin of the Secular Variation of the geomagnetic field that this third paper under the same heading, is written, —In this paper it is supposed that amagnetic dipole is suddenly introduced in the earth's core to act as a source of disturbance to the exciting field taken as a poloidal one. The dipole axis is placed parallel to the original field and perpendicular to the mantle. Mathematical solutions have been obtained for the resulting fluid motion in the core as well as for the generated magnetohydrodynamic perturbations in the earth's core and in the mantle. It can be seen from the mathematical results obtained that although the disturbances in the core are so complicated, yet they are much less complicated in the mantle and specially at the plane boundary separating core and mantle.

Notes: Summary Mechanically stirred actinometric solutions of uranyl oxalate, sensitive to radiation below 4300 Å, are found to respond consistently to conditions of solar radiation which are met in Italy during summer, at elevations between 0–3500 metres. The instrumentation developed permits to monitor the course of radiation-dependent chemical reactions in solution, under sunlight.

Notes: Summary The photodecomposition of ammonium nitrate at various concentrations, in ventilated, aqueous solutions, is investigated as a function of radiation intensity, both under sunlight illumination and under artificial ultraviolet light. The process of decomposition, to nitrogen and water, of ammonium nitrite formed, competes with the formation of NO 2 − which is, otherwise, proportional to the radiation absorbed.

Notes: Summary After introduction in 1. and definitions in 2.A. the separately well known or evident relations representing the fundamental problems of the interpretation in the gravity are perpicuously summarised in 2.b. by means of the group theory. From the the following conclusions can be drawn (in 2.C.): 1.) from the point of view of the quantitative interpretation all gravity-maps are totally equivalent in respect of both their ambiguity and the informations that they are able to give, 2.) the quantity of the informations obtained from the gravity maps is growing withthe increasing number of other informations and with greater accuracy of the measurements. Therefore the development of a general quantitative method is proposed (with concrete points of views), to realise the theoretical possibilities.-In 3.) some problems of the derivative maps are discused in connection with the foregoings.

Notes: Summary In Paper III (Mohandis [1]2) we considered the sudden introduction of amagnetic dipole in the earth's core to act as a source of disturbance to the exitation field taken as a poloidal one. A symmetrical case was considered where the dipole axis is placed parallel to the original field and perpendicular to the earth's mantle. In the present work, we consider an unsymmetric case where the axis of themagnetic dipole is placed perpendicular to both the mantle and the exitation field which is taken as a toroidal one. A mathematical study is made for the resulting fluid motion in the core as well as for the generated hydromagnetic perturbations in both the mantle and the earth's fluid core. A more powerful method has been adopted than those used in previous cases.

Notes: Summary The study of radiative transfer in clouds and fog requires a knowledge of basic radiation constants. For this purpose the volume extinction, scattering, and absorption coefficients, the maximum absorption coefficients for composite spectral lines, and the coefficients used to expand the phase function into a series of Legendre polynomials for analytic representation of the phase function are provided in tabular and graphical format. The analysis for cloud droplets is based upon the rigorous electromagnetic theory. All Mie computations are carried out in an exact manner avoiding any approximations. Absorption line constants as computed here are based upon the investigations ofElsasser withCulbertson [5]3) andWyatt, Stull, andPlass [18]. Tabulations are made on the basis of fifty spectral intervals covering the entire solar and infrared spectra. Polarization effects are disregarded in this study.
