Notizen: Abstract A recently developed algebraic approach to the feedback system design problem is reviewed via the derivation of the theory in the single-variate case. This allows the simple algebraic nature of the theory to be brought to the fore while simultaneously minimizing the complexities of the presentation. Rather than simply giving a single solution to the prescribed design problem we endeavor to give a complete parameterization of the set of compensators which meet specifications. Although this might at first seem to complicate our theory it, in fact, opens the way for a sequential approach to the design problem in which one parameterizes the subset of those compensators which meet the second specification...etc. Specific problems investigated include feedback system stabilization, the tracking and disturbance rejection problem, robust design, transfer function design, pole placement, simultaneous stabilization, and stable stabilization.

Notizen: Abstract We describe a recently developed framework for exploring the structure of linear time-invariant models of large systems, and for constructing interpretable or physically-based, reduced-order models that reproduce selected modes of the original systems to a desired accuracy. Application of this framework to constructing lumped approximations for interconnections of lumped and distributed systems is briefly explored.

Notizen: Abstract Pipeline techniques have been successfully applied to speeding up processing in both general- and special-purpose digital computers. Application of these techniques to nonrecursive (FIR) filters has been suggested and is quite straightforward. Application to recursive (IIR) filters has not previously been shown. In this paper, the technique for applying pipeline techniques to recursive filters is shown and the advantages and disadvantages of the technique are discussed. Using these techniques, recursive digital filters operating at hitherto impossibly high rates can be designed.

Notizen: Abstract The long-standing problem of reconstructing a function from its samples is considered again. Assuming a sequence of oversampled values, a set of appropriate idealized reconstruction filters can be defined, which do not suffer from instability or slow convergence. The realization — a cascade of a nonrecursive digital filter, D/A-converter, and a fixed/analog smoothing filter — demands the design of the digital filter for the increase of the sampling rate. The design of this nonrecursive filter is the purpose of this paper. Approximations in the frequency as well as in the time domain are presented.

Notizen: Abstract Algorithms are derived for representation of double power series by branched continued fractions. Some properties of the branched continued fractions are given. Two new alternative structures for realization of a two-dimensional, zero memory nonlinear transfer characteristic are proposed. These structures permit the design of 2-D systems with relatively low sensitivity of the transfer function to coefficient errors. Generalized equivalence transformations of branched continued fractions are also presented. Illustrative examples are included.

Notizen: Abstract Time-invariantn-port networks are considered which are constructed from linear resistors and transformers, and nonlinear inductors and capacitors. A port property is sought which is analogous to the symmetry of the impedance matrix obtained in the linear case. Such a property is found using a stochastic characterization: with all resistors assumed to be at the one temperature and modelled to include the usual thermal noise, a fluctuating noise voltage will be observed at the ports of the networks. With some reasonable restrictions on the nature of the nonlinearities in the reactive elements, the vector of such noise voltages is shown to constitute what is known as a reversible stochastic process; in the linear case, reversibility holds if and only if the impedance matrix is symmetric.

Notizen: Abstract Three algorithms for the solution of the eigenvalue problem for a continuously parameterized family of sparse matrices are presented; a continuousLU (orLR) algorithm, a continuousQR algorithm, and a continuous Hessenberg algorithm. Each of the three algorithms may be implemented recursively and the sparsity of the given matrices is preserved throughout the numerical process.

Notizen: Abstract We present two new algorithms to estimate the domain of attraction of the equilibriumx=0 of a nonlinear systemx=f(x). One of these algorithms utilizes quadratic Lyapunov functions while the second algorithm makes use of norm Lyapunov functions. Both of these procedures yield estimates for the domain of attraction which are comparable to those obtained by existing methods; however, the present algorithms appear to be significantly more efficient than existing algorithms. We also show how sometimes the applicability of the above results can be extended to high order systems by invoking the comparison principle. In doing so, we establish some results for the comparison principle which are of interest in their own right. Specifically, we relate the domain of attraction of a low order comparison system to the domain of attraction of a higher order system and we give an interpretation of the comparison principle in terms of stability preserving maps. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the present results, and in order to compare the present results with existing results, several specific examples are presented.

Notizen: Abstract This work provides a mathematical framework for topologically-independent analysis of permutation networks. First, a structure-dependent representation is provided using matrices whose entries are switching expressions. Then, a transformation is presented which maps these matrices into structure-independent representations which are matrices whose entries are 0/1 matrices. Algebraic tools for manipulating the second type of matrices are also provided. Notions such as permutations realizable by a network, the rearrangeability property, and series and parallel connections of networks are defined and discussed with regard to the proposed representations.

Notizen: Abstract TheKdV andMkdV multisoliton solutions are found to be generated by rational Stieltjes functions of the non-linearity parameter, each pole of which can be associated with a soliton. The well-known asymptotic emergence of the separate solitons follows at once from the motion of the poles. Successive (n-1/n) Padé approximants to theN-soliton series are considered to show how the solitons are reconstructed from an increasing number of perturbation terms (n ≤N). Their asymptotic behaviour is particularly striking: as time increases the behaviour of then th approximation becomes that of an actualn-soliton solution, constituted by then leading solitons. Furthermore, it turns out that each such Padé approximation satisfies a conservation law: the mass of the approximated solution, equal to that of then solitons included, is conserved.

Notizen: Abstract In this note we review the technique for rational Chebyshev approximation as given by the generalization of the Remes algorithm and point out its connection to the generalized eigenvalue problem for symmetric Hankel matrices. By a classical example and some recent work it can be shown that interpolation with rational functions (even) on equidistant knots may lead to results that are superior to Chebyshev approximation by means of polynomials for comparable numerical work.

Notizen: Abstract A problem on optimal approximation of continuous-time linear systems is studied. The performance measure (error) is chosen to be the spectral norm of the difference between the Hankel operators associated with the original system and the approximant. It is shown that the Hankel operators associated with continuous-time systems and the Hankel matrices associated with discrete-time systems are related by an interesting correspondence property via bilinear transforms. This fact is then used to derive the continuous-time results (theory and algorithms) from the established discrete-time ones. Some simple examples are presented.

Notizen: Abstract The techniques of scattering and inverse scattering theory are used to investigate the properties of matrix orthogonal polynomials. The discrete matrix analog of the Jost function is introduced and its properties investigated. The matrix distribution function with respect to which the polynomials are orthonormal is constructed. The discrete matrix analog of the Marchenko equation is derived and used to obtain further results on the matrix Jost function and the distribution function.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents our unified approach to the solution of large system analysis problems. The macromodular behavioral technique combines multiple-logic function macromodeling, functional latency and nested macromodel. We take advantage of the dynamic behavior and the repetitive modular structure of a system to improve the computational efficiency during system analysis. Several Bipolar and MOSFET electronic networks are used to demonstrate the merits of the macromodular behavioral method for large system analysis.

Notizen: Abstract This paper considers the design of an FIR digital filter by interconnecting a number of identical FIR subfilters with the aid of a few additional multipliers and adders. The overall structure is in the form of a tapped cascaded FIR subfilters. A composite method to determine the tapping coefficients along with the coefficients of the subfilter to approximate overall frequency response characteristic is proposed. Several numerical examples illustrating the proposed method are included.

Notizen: Abstract Given a passive frequency-dependent source impedance and an active or passive load and a preassigned transducer power-gain characteristic, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of a lossless reciprocal equalizer which, when operating between the given source and the given load, yields the desired transducer power-gain characteristic. The significance of the present approach is that the realization of the equalizer involves only driving-point synthesis by the Darlington theory.

Notizen: Abstract The development of a block-state structure with minimum round-off noise subject to ℓ2-norm dynamic range constraint is outlined. The pertinent equations for scaling and for round-off noise analysis of block-state structures implemented using fixed-point arithmetic are first derived. Next, a lower bound and the global minimum of the output noise due to the round-off of the block-state-variables are derived. A method of deriving the minimum round-off noise block state-structure is outlined. A numerical example is included. With regard to computational complexity and overall noise performance, the block-state realization of recursive digital filters is shown to be superior.

Notizen: Abstract Although an operational amplifier is a nonlinear device, the existing methods of analysis of circuits with operational amplifiers view it as a linear element which possibly has an infinite gain. As a result, it is not clear to what extent the results thus obtained hold. In this paper we construct a general model of a (nonlinear) circuit containing operational amplifiers. Viewing such a network as an interconnection of a multiport withn operational amplifiers, we give conditions for solvability (i.e., for the existence of an input-output operator), and establish estimates for the error incurred by replacing such a system by an idealized system whose operational amplifiers have infinite gain. In this way we determine ranges for variables within which the traditional linear analysis gives results that fulfill given accuracy requirements.

Notizen: Abstract A brief account is given of a number of generalisations of Padé approximants defined and studied over the past twenty years. These generalisations include multi-point approximants, approximants based upon differential equations, multivalued approximants, multivariate approximants, and approximants defined from series of orthogonal functions. The general class of Hermite-Padé approximants is discussed, and various applications are noted.

Notizen: Abstract Recent signal processing research suggests that a theory of moments for finite Toeplitz matrices and forms would help in understanding and solving certain model approximation problems. Such a theory is developed in this paper and it is shown how these moment parameterizations can make approximating by low rank Toeplitz matrices tractable. In the case of Toeplitz forms, this moment representation gives a simple solution to the extendibility problem for finite sections of a Toeplitz form.

Notizen: Abstract Singular value analysis, balancing, and approximation of a class of deformable systems are investigated. The deformable systems considered herein include several important cases of flexible aerospace vehicles and are characterized by countably infinitely many poles and zeros on the imaginary axis. The analysis relies completely on the so-called asymptotic singular value decompositon of the Hankel operator associated with the impulse response of the system. A parametric study of a six-dimensional single-input single-output case is performed.

Notizen: Abstract Via fractional representation methods, this paper tries to clarify the role of various conditions used in the feedback system design and stability with respect to the well-posedness of the system, the existence of a solution for stability and design, and the parameterization of the set of complete solutions. The design criterion for stable feedback system design can be used for filters design, as shown in Section 5. Systems to be considered in this paper include the linear time-varying case and results can easily be extended to the case where systems do not have the same number of inputs and outputs.

Notizen: Conclusion A necessary condition for consistent initial conditions for singular nonlinear systems has been discussed. It is shown that for linear systems or systems of index less than three these conditions are equivlaent to previously reported results. However, for nonlinear systems of index greater than two these new conditions correct those previously reported. One consequence is that Euler's method may fail to estimate solutions for some semi-state equations. R. W. Newcomb's provision of an earlier version of [14] and subsequent correspondence is gratefully acknowledged.

Notizen: Abstract A set of eight linear spectral transformations which can be used in the design of two-dimensional digital filters is studied from a group-theoretic point of view. Several properties of the transformations, some of them known and some of them new, are deduced and are then applied in the implementation of 2-D digital filters. It is shown that trade-offs exist which can be used to reduce either the amount of memory required for the programming or the amount of data manipulation.

Notizen: Abstract A physically justifiable mathematical model is proposed for a class of current-controlled, negative resistance oscillators having terminal characteristics which are poorly represented by the van der Pol, Scott, and Ceschia-Zecchin equations. Such resonators are typified by the monolithic emitter-coupled astable multivibrator (ECAM). A unique, three-parameter equation, based on the inverse hyperbolic tangent, is matched to the ECAM voltage-current curve. Using the method of Kryloff and Bogoliuboff, the transient and steady-state behavior of the ECAM is derived for oscillation with single-mode and double-mode LCR networks under quasi-linear conditions. An expression for the time of amplitude build-up and decay is derived. A phase plane is constructed for the double-mode case, yielding a system apparently free of simultaneous modes. The validity of the model is experimentally verified for quartz-controlled ECAM devices. The analysis results are extendable ton resonant modes and may be generalized to voltage-controlled devices.

Notizen: Abstract The problem of adaptively detecting two sinusoids corrupted by noise is considered, with emphasis on resolution properties. The approach is to form a spectral estimate from the coefficients of a Δ-step-ahead adaptive predictor. A theoretical analysis reveals that attention to the choice of the prediction horizon Δ gives a distinct improvement in the spectral estimate and in the resolution of the signals. The theoretical results are illustrated with numerical examples. Comparisons with previously suggested techniques are also made.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we formulate power systems as nonlinear nearly Hamiltonian systems. Using the invariance principle for ordinary differential equations, necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability are established and a new method of estimating the domain of attraction of the stable equilibrium point is developed. The present results constitute a novel approach to stability analysis and involve the following three steps: a. Given a system with dissipation, the stability of its equilibrium is ascertained by determining the stability of the associated conservative system. b. Attractivity of the stable equilibrium of the entire system (with dissipation) is determined from the system topology. c. An estimate of the domain of attraction of the asymptotically stable equilibrium is obtained by making use of results obtained in (a) and (b). The stability criterion developed in this paper sheds new light on the mechanism of instability in power systems and it provides analytical verification to the concept of the potential-energy boundary surface (PEBS). The PEBS is a hypersurface which makes up a part of the boundary of the domain of attraction of the stable equilibrium in a power system. The existence and properties of the PEBS have thus far been deduced primarily via simulations and heuristic methods.

Notizen: Abstract In conventional television systems, picture scanning in vertical and temporal directions is usually very defective with regard to the sampling theorem. In this paper some deficiencies such as aliasing, line-structure distortion, line flickering, and large-area flickering are investigated with regard to their dependence on the inter-lacedpicture-scanning process. The three-dimensional reconstruction filtering of the sampled picture is especially analyzed with respect of the viewer's perception. Furthermore, it will be shown that in connection with a new concept of picture scanning published earlier [1], [2], a flat-field reproduction without any 25/30-Hz flicker can be achieved by vertical filtering only. This is true even though the final reproduction by the monitor is performed with interlace. The vertical filtering can then be optimized in the sense of maximum picture sharpness and resolution with negligible ringing as well. Practical results are given in this paper.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper a new type of “velocity-selecting/rejecting filter” which passes or stops a particular event in a seismic signal is proposed. The velocity-selecting filter is based on a time-space band-pass filter with sharp passband for a particular direction, and similarly, the velocity-rejecting filter is based on a time-space band-stop filter. A technique for designing such filters, in terms of an infinite-impulse-response (IIR) filter, is presented, in which a rotated version of separable filter is used. Finally, numerical examples are included to illustrate the design theory.

Notizen: Abstract In a recent paper on nonlocal expansions necessary and sufficient conditions are given under whichf −1 has a generalized power series expansion, whenf is an invertible locally Lipschitz map between certain general subsets of a complex Banach space. Here we establish the validity of a conceptually interesting algorithm for obtaining the expansion. Basically, we show that a certain contraction mapping iteration generates iteratesℐ 1,ℐ 2,... such that eachℐ k yields all of the terms of the generalized power series expansion off −1 up to order (k + 1), assuming merely that the expansion off −1 exists. An earlier different result along related lines is mentioned.

Notizen: Abstract The representation of functions in a basis function expansionz(t)= ∑k=1/∞=,a k〉 x k (t) is straightforward when the basis functionsx k (t) are orthogonal. There has been very little work up to this time in determining how to use nonorthogonal bases in signal representation. On the other hand, applications in data compression and signal synthesis often require using specific tailor-made bases. Presented here is a method for constructing very general nonorthogonal bases. Orthogonality has often been used to show that a basis spans the set of functions of interest and to calculate the coefficients of the representation. In this paper, both of these fundamental aspects are addressed for nonorthogonal bases. A new basis {y k (t)} is obtained by performing a linear transformation on a known existing basis {x k (t)}. This transformation is constructed such that the coefficients of signal representation on the new basis are readily found. Then, a useful and sufficient condition is placed upon the new basis such that representations converge. The fundamental methods are applied to the standard examples of signal representation. The complex sinusoids, the Rademacher functions, the orthogonal polynomials, and the decaying exponentials are used as the original basis {x k (t)} from which a new basis {y k (t)} is generated. Two examples are given to illustrate general applications: one in signal synthesis and one in signal analysis.

The interrelationships between these concepts are examined. An open question concerning these ideals is settled, namely that the strongly strictly causal operators form the largest of the classes commonly considered.

Notizen: Abstract Many problems in adaptive filtering can be approached from the point of view of system identification. The close interconnection between these two disciplines is explored in some detail. This approach makes it possible to apply recursive parameter estimation algorithms to adaptive signal processing. Several examples are discussed including: adaptive line enhancement, generalized adaptive noise cancelling, adaptive deconvolution and adaptive TDOA estimation. It is shown how the recursive maximum likelihood algorithm can be used for both FIR and IIR filtering, and some preliminary results are presented. Several alternative algorithms are briefly discussed.

Notizen: Conclusions To conclude our discussion we can only confess to our shortcomings as organizers and editors. We have been incomplete, we have been biased, and, worst of all, we have not been able to produce the most essential connections in any firm way. Perhaps our major achievement — if we may say so — has been to point the way to many possible new results and to new research. The field discussed here seemed at first very conventional. May we have convinced the reader that it is not. That the major problems have not been solved. That here lies an open field for system engineers, numerical analysts, and mathematicians.

These facts are used to describe the general solution of the Carathéodory-Fejér extrapolation problem. This turns out to be useful for some numerical problems such as: computation of the norm of an analytic Toeplitz matrix, an algorithm for detecting reflection coefficients in seismic exploration, and a model for controlling the errors in Wiener prediction.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents a new method for estimating the coefficients of autoregressive moving-average parameters of stationary time series. The method is based on computing the sample autocorrelations of the given time series and fitting an ARMA model so as to approximate the partial autocorrelations in a least-squares sense. When the given time series are characterized by spectral zeroes near the unit circle, they tend to have relatively long sequences of nonzero partial autocorrelations; hence the new method is especially effective in such cases. This paper contains a derivation of all necessary mathematical details, as well as several numerical examples illustrating the performance.

Notizen: Summary of Part I The present article represents a survey of a new frequency domain approach to the feedback system design problem. Although the theory applies to the general multivariate case and, in fact, much of the theory can be extended to a general ring theoretic setting for the purpose of the present exposition we will restrict ourselves to the single-variate case wherein the simple algebraic nature of the new theory is most readily apparent. In Part I1 we introduced the concept of a stable rational fractional representation for a feedback system and derived an asymptotic design theory therefrom. This included a complete parameterization for the set of compensators which stabilize the system under appropriate tracking and/or disturbance rejection constraints. Moreover, expressions for the feedback system gains of the resulting system which are linear (actually affine) in the underlying design parameter are obtained. As such, the process of choosing a specific design within this set to meet additional specifications is greatly simplified. In Part II we investigate a number of these constraints. These include the robust design problem, transfer function design, the pole placement problem, the simultaneous design problem, and the problem of designing a stable stabilizing compensator.

Notizen: Abstract The anti-sidetone telephone circuit is a frequency-independent passive reciprocal 3-port whose scattering matrix between three prescribed resistive terminations (transmitter, receiver, line) meets a certain specification. In their 1920 paper, Campbell and Foster (CF) showed that the prescribed 3-port can be realized as a lossless 4-port consisting in two 3-winding transformers closed on one resistance (the balancing network). If one (two) relations are imposed between the terminating resistances of the 4-port, realizations involving a single 3-winding (2-winding) transformer are available, and the resulting 136 (38) distinct realizations have been listed by CF. In this paper, we reestablish the CF-results (which were stated almost without proof in their paper and have never been rediscussed in the literature) and present a genetic classification of their 136 + 38 circuits. Recently, a realization of the anti-sidetone 3-port containing more than one internal resistance (in addition to the balancing network, a light-emitting diode serves to illuminate the dial) has been described by D. R. Means; in this paper, we present a complete characterization of that wider class of circuits.

Notizen: Abstract A differential operational amplifier with reverse switched and fixed capacitors produces a semi-nonsingular sampled data system which leads to a delayed sample and hold signal. Such a device can be suitably applied to a compensating resonant low-pass filter which is derived within theclass of Rader-Gold transforms. The resonant low-pass filter application demonstrates that analog transfer functions with bounded spectrums can be converted to accurate digital spectrum counterparts without pole-zero decompositions.

It is shown that the input impedances of certain cascaded multivariable networks belong to this class. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a multivariable positive real function with unity degree in each variable to be the input impedance of a resistively-terminated cascade of two lossless two-ports in mutually exclusive variables and separated by a series inductor or a shunt capacitor in another variable are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract This paper describes a new design method of inductance simulation for switched-capacitor (SC) filters based on the VIS-SC concept. The resulting circuits have not only the excellent sensitivity behavior of VIS-SC filters, but also the low sensitivity to the main parasitics occuring in the MOS integrated circuit, i.e., the parasitic capacitances between the bottom plates of the implemented capacitors and substrate. As examples, a sixth-order band-pass and a sixth-order band-stop elliptic filter transformed from a third-order low-pass are given. Experimental results agree very well with theory. A brief analysis is given of certain parasitic effects in band-stop filters at the Nyquist frequency.

Notizen: Abstract A class of efficient filter structures is proposed which uses a recursive realization of an FIR filter. The structures are in some sense a generalization of the frequency sampling structure, but they are more versatile and arise from a time-domain rather than frequency-domain argument. The new structure has a tap out of every block delay, and the length of the block delay is the length of each piecewise section of the time-domain approximation. The number of taps, filter coefficients, and the amount of arithmetic are proportional to the number of piecewise sections, not to the actual filter length or order. This filter is particularly efficient when a long-length filter can be approximated by a few piecewise sections, which is the case for many practical filters.

Notizen: Abstract This paper introduces a new iterative image restoration method which is capable of restoring noisy blurred images by incorporatinga priori knowledge about the image and noise statistics into the iterative procedure. The iteration equation consists of a prediction part which is based on a noncausal image model description and an innovation part which is weighted by a gain factor. The gain is computed using a linear MSE optimization procedure and is updated at each step of the iteration. The convergence of the algorithm, the resolution of some convergence difficulties by using “reblurring,” and methods for the introduction of physical constraints will be discussed. This image restoration scheme can be interpreted as an iterative procedure with a statistical constraint on the image data. Results of several experiments with noisy blurred data are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach.

Notizen: Abstract We consider the discrete-time detection of a known time-varying deterministic signal in white noise, where the univariate noise density is known perfectly only on an interval about the origin. We present a method to enhance the asymptotic performance of the detector by exploiting this knowledge, and at the same time preserve robustness properties of the detector to the remaining inexact knowledge of the univariate noise density. We then provide examples to show that improved performance is indeed obtained.

Notizen: Abstract In an envelope-constrained filtering problem with uncertain input the set of possible input waveforms and the set of permissible output waveforms are each defined by envelope constraints (time domain inequalities). The object is to find the optimal (minimal norm) inpulse response for which every waveform in the input envelope evokes a response in the output envelope. The problem is solved by extending earlier results for a single specified input. The solution is further extended to allow for unknown-but-bounded errors in the filter realization.

Notizen: Abstract After selecting the most suitable model for the class of two-dimensional quarter-plane-causal, recursive, and separable in denominator (CRSD) filters, a procedure for realizing a cascade system of such filters is developed. The realization utilizes the individual CRSD models constituting the cascade system. An example is given to further illustrate the technique.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we present an approach for improving the output signal-to-noise power ratio of a discrete-time matched filter by employing a continuous-time filter, even though the continuous-time signal input is imperfectly known. It is shown that is it possible to design a continuous-time filter which is robust to inexact knowledge of the signal input; moreover, the robustness property does not severely compromise performance. In fact, it is shown that the resulting filter possesses an output signal-to-noise power ratio which upper bounds that of the discrete-time filter.

Notizen: Abstract The practical issue addressed in this paper is the automated design of FIR multiband digital filters. The specific theoretical filter-design problem addressed is what to do over the transition regions if a min-max design criterion is adopted. The technique suggested consists of formulating the design over the entire band [0,π]. Advantages and disadvantages of this approach versus the use of “don't care” bands are examined. Specific comparisons pertaining to FIR multiband design are presented. The specific contribution of the paper is twofold: (i) A suggestion for the type of functions to use as an objective over the transition regions if a full band [0,π] min-max formulation is to be used. (ii) A design technique for multiband FIR which appears useful in a CAD context. This technique gives results comparable to those obtained with the “don't care” band approach. However, the new procedure requires less user interaction and is thus much easier to automate.

Notizen: Abstract A theorem is introduced which is useful in deriving equivalent multirate filter structures. Frequency responses of multistage multirate filters are derived and defined by deriving their equivalent one-stage filters. A design principle is proposed to reduce filtering requirements at each stage and move the filter operations to low-sampling-rate stages and thus result in a lower arithmetic rate. Optimum FIR and IIR multistage multirate filter designs are developed based on this principle. The new design has a one-point passband specification for each decimator and/or interpolator stage resulting in a wider transition region and lower filter order. Examples are given to explain the design procedure, and comparisons are made to show the superiority of the new filters.

Notizen: Abstract A system concept expected to improve sonar multiple target detection and classification performance in severe directional interference environments is presented. Adaptive nulling of undesired strong interference sources and detection of desired weak sources are achieved by utilizing constrained adaptive processing techniquestogether with conventional processing techniques. The adaptive processing functions are incorporated in the overall system architecture in a manner which maintains the computational complexity and storage requirementslinearly proportional to the product of the number of interference sources and the number of adaptive weights per interference source. In addition, a detailed discussion is provided concerning the importance of certaina priori assumptions on constrained adaptive algorithm performance.

Notizen: Abstract Recursive filter structures have been found for FIR filters with piecewisepolynomial or piecewise-(polynomial · sinusoid) impulse responses. The amount of arithmetic required for these filters is proportional to the number of piecewise sections in their impulse responses rather than the actual filter lengths. In this paper, it is shown that these impulse response expressions are quite good approximations to many practical filters. Low-pass filters, high-pass filters, narrowband, band-pass, and band-stop filters, Hilbert transformers, and differentiators all have impulse responses which can be approximated by these forms, and a long filter impulse response consists of only a few piecewise sections with greatly reduced arithmetic requirements. Though this technique is based on time-domain approximation, a frequency-domain optimization to select filter parameters is presented with excellent results.

Notizen: Abstract The factorization of two-dimensional spectral functions is a problem of interest in the digital processing of signals because of the nonexistence of a fundamental theorem of algebra for bivariate polynomials. In this paper we consider the special case of rational spectral functions, which are quotients of polynomials or pseudo-polynomials of finite order. We first characterize the general use of asymmetric halfplane factors, and then propose recursive procedures to obtain the factors. In the case of strictly positive spectral functions, we use the homomorphic transform to characterize the causal factor by its first-order data and then apply the modified leastsquares approximation to obtain the rational factors. For those cases of partially characterized spectral functions, we propose extensions of one-dimensional procedures. These alternative procedures are based on the modified least-squares approximation as well as on the two-dimensional Levinson algorithm. All the procedures presented are recursive, thus computationally efficient, and guarantee the stability of the factors in most cases.

Notizen: Abstract This paper investigates the properties of the two-variable polynomialu (λ, z) built on the first column of the adjoint matrix ofλI -C, whereC is a given Hermitian Toeplitz matrix. In particular, the stability properties ofu (λ,z) are discussed and are shown to depend essentially on the location of X with respect to the eigenvalues ofC. The eigenvectors ofC, which have recently found some applications in signal processing and estimation theory, are obtained from the polynomialu(λ,z) whenλ tends to the eigenvalues ofC. This allows one to derive several results concerning the eigenpolynomials, including those for the case of multiple eigenvalues.

Notizen: Abstract A general-purpose interactive computer program for the design of linear causal shift-invariant two-dimensional recursive filters is presented in terms of its organization and operation. Narrow-band fan filters and circularly symmetric low-pass and high-pass filters for many useful image-processing applications can be designed using this program. The design is by numerical optimization of a guaranteedstable analog transfer function which is derived from a general two-dimensional passive prototype network. Corresponding discrete transfer functions are obtained by the double bilinear transformation. In using the program, selection of one code from a menu of predefined design codes provides the designer with various design features; these include the use of a doubly-terminated network to eliminate erroneous gain spikes, the use of a network particularly suited to circularly symmetric functions, and a facility for designing filters potentially useful for high-speed parallel processing. Design examples of a low-order highly selective fan filter and a circularly symmetric low-pass filter are included.

Notizen: Abstract The implementation of the Lin model for the non pinchoff depletion mode MOSFETs directly into the source code of the SPICE 2G.5 circuit simulation program is described. The computational advantages of our implementation over Lin's subcircuit approach are pointed out, and, more significantly, certain previously undiscovered limitations of both methods are discussed. The encoding of the model into SPICE is described in sufficient detail so as to be duplicable by other interested researchers. Our results compare favorably to experiment and to the more comprehensive El-Mansy model. Finally, a new method of parameter extraction is described for the El-Mansy model, which makes it possible to derive the parameters of the Lin and El-Mansy models simultaneously.

Notizen: Abstract The roundoff noise problem for multirate digital filters is difficult because rate changing inside the filter makes both scaling and roundoff noise calculation complicated. With a new multirate filter analysis technique, the transfer function between any two points inside a multirate filter can be easily found, thus, simplifies the scaling and noise calculation. This paper finds theL P scaling and derives the roundoff noise expressions for fixed point implementations of the multistage decimator, interpolator, and multirate narrow-band low-pass filter. It is shown that the noise source at a low sampling rate stage is more important than that at a higher sampling rate stage. Methods to reduce output roundoff noise are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract A relation between the types of symmetries that exist in signal and Fourier transform domain representations is derived for continuous as well as discrete domain signals. The symmetry is expressed by a set of parameters, and the relations derived in this paper will help to find the parameters of a symmetry in the signal or transform domain resulting from a given symmetry in the transform or signal domain respectively. A duality among the relations governing the conversion of the parameters of symmetry in the two domains is also brought to light. The application of the relations is illustrated by a number of two-dimensional examples.

Notizen: Abstract Explicit conditions required to be satisfied by the numerator and denominator polynomial coefficients of a magnitude-squared rational response function, ¦S21(jωi, jω2) ¦2, so that it might approximate an ideal low-pass characteristic along any straight line in the plane through (0,0) in a maximally flat manner, are obtained. The condition for attenuation along all radial directions through (0,0) is expressed in terms of the positivity of a form in two variables. The technique is easily extended to the multidimensional case and can be used to design filters other than those of the low-pass type. The theory could be used to design lumped-distributed and variable-parameter filters.

Notizen: Abstract Results are given concerning the existence and other properties of Volterralike input-output expansions for discrete-time systems whose inputs and outputs are defined on the time set {0,1,2,}. The results, which establish the existence of (and show how to obtain) a locally convergent input-output expansion for a very large class of systems, are along the lines of those reported recently by this writer for continuous-time systems. With regard to one of the theorems given here, new ground is broken in that the theorem directly addresses the case where the nonlinear part of the system need not be assumed to be memoryless. Systems of the kind considered arise, for example, in the area of communication channel modeling for digital data transmission.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents new results for predictive compression of signal samples, based upon spectral observation. The formulation emphasizes the inherent presence of a deterministic signal model and will accommodate time-varying models and time- and signal-dependent error bounds. Transmission of predictive error residuals instead of the samples themselves is shown to be identical in structure to linear predictive coding; although additionally applicable where available stochastic signal models may be inadequate. Sample deletion, when prediction error is within a chosen bound, offers a real time compression method of particular importance to measurement and control applications.

Since such networks can be transformed into 2-D wave digital filters, these approximations provide useful magnitude responses in the 2-D digital domain, also. Two approximation methods are discussed, and these can produce near quadrantal symmetry.

Notizen: Abstract Two-dimensional recursive digital filters have the advantages of flexibility and accuracy, typical of digital processing systems, and the ability to perform the desired filtering with significantly fewer operations than nonrecursive filters. In this paper some useful symmetries are exploited in the design of filters with circularly symmetric magnitude responses. With the imposition of quadrantal symmetry, followed by further symmetry about the 45° line, a particular filter structure is derived using a cascade of causal second-order sections. Each section uses only four independent coefficients and possesses a separable denominator, with resulting simplification of stability testing and stabilization, which can now be done by using one-dimensional techniques. The Fletcher-Powell nonlinear optimization routine is used with a mean-squared error criterion, which enables the optimum value of the gain to be incorporated into the objective function to be minimized. Linear phase is approximated by designing all-pass equalizers which can be cascaded with the filters designed.

Notizen: Abstract An analysis of the role of tunnelling rays in pulse propagation in graded-index fibres is presented. Tunnelling ray attenuation is handled by using the generalized parameter technique which allows attenuation coefficients to be dispensed with and relevant families of tunnelling rays to be identified. Results are given for impulse response pulse widths and shapes. Incorporation of tunnelling ray pulse contributions into the formalism for determining optimum refractive-index profiles is presented. For most cases, tunnelling ray effects are small, but significant corrections may be necessary when measurements are made on short lengths of fibre.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper power coupling between two multimode optical fibres is investigated. A formalism (based on a geometrical approach) suitable for analysing any coupling configuration between fibres with any index profile and any radiance distribution is presented. The model is applied to obtain coupling losses both in uniformly excited parabolic- and step-index fibres, in the presence of all kinds of coupling errors. Numerical results of extensive utility are shown and useful asymptotic expressions of coupling efficiency, valid for small values of coupling error parameters, are derived together with some practical rules for error combination. Mention is also made of some experimental results we have obtained, which corroborate some previous assertions. The work can supply a useful tool in the design of joints and connectors between single fibres or optical cables.

Notizen: Abstract The photon drag and optical rectification response fromn-type gallium phosphide containing 2.4×1016 electrons cm−3 has been studied using laser sources at 10.61 and 2.83μm. By using different contact configurations, the existence of an additional electric field term in the propagation direction has been deduced. This field is shown to arise from the spatial derivatives of the photon drag and optical rectification field components caused by absorption of the radiation. The importance of this effect in detector design is considered.

Notizen: Abstract On the basis of the theory of coupled waves the amplitudes of the first-order diffracted waves and the diffraction efficiency is calculated for sequentially superposed phase gratings stored in dielectric reflection holograms. The investigations are restricted to the case of a fixed reference wave during recording and Bragg-angle incidence. By analogy to the transmission volume grating the coupling effects which appear between incident beams and diffracted waves give the possibility of building up beam-couplers and -splitters with certain coupling parameters determined by the recording process. Moreover, reflection gratings allow a favourable combination between coupling and reflecting properties and avoid the diffraction efficiency oscillations that are characteristic of transmission gratings. The performance of the reconstruction process with several waves simultaneously allows the tuning of the intensities of diffracted waves with dependence on amplitude or phase differences between incident beams.

Notizen: Abstract A simple method is suggested for calculation of reflection, radiation and transmission coefficients for the distributed feedback structure in the second diffraction order. The method is based on a slight difference between coefficients of reflectionR and radiationI of the surface wave for λ=λ∞ (where λ∞ is the light wavelength corresponding to a precise resonance for the grating length I→∞) and those for λ=λl (where λl is the light wavelength corresponding to the resonance for the finite grating length). The simplicity of the method makes it possible to use it for optimization of the distributed feedback structure by a number of parameters. The technique can be used in the case of thin-film and diffused waveguides for both TE and TM modes.

Notizen: Abstract Curvature of a single-mode optical fibre gives rise to two principal forms of additional transmission loss, namely transition loss and pure bend loss. The transition loss and the associated ray radiation, which have been observed at the beginning of a bend, can be satisfactorily explained by a modified coupled-mode theory. The radiation modes are represented by a quasi-guided mode having an average propagation constantβ e. The introduction of a gradual change of curvature reduces the transition loss much more than the pure bend loss. Analysis of the microbending loss shows that the transition component is a maximum at a given correlation length which can be simply expressed in terms ofβ e. The contributions of both transition and bend components to the total microbend loss have been derived for the case of a randomly-curved fibre for several autocorrelation and density functions.

Notizen: Abstract A theoretical assessment is presented based on a modification of Baraff's theory in order to compare the temperature dependence of several characteristics, including breakdown voltage, excess noise factor, effective ionization rate ratio and efficiency in Ge, Si and GaAs PIN avalanche photodiodes. The temperature coefficient of avalanche breakdown voltage in a high field region is studied. Finally the response time of a PIN APD in these materials is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Detection of binary images in noise is considered in the light of statistical detection theory, with particular reference to information storage systems. The different disturbances are classified into system noise and transparency noise. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) have been obtained when the scanned binary image is corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise and multiplicative speckle. It is shown that improvement in ROC with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is less pronounced in the presence of speckle.

Notizen: Abstract The sensitivities of heterodyne and direct-detection systems at CO2 laser wavelengths are compared to illuminate the design principles involved. It is shown that destruction of the temporal coherence of scattered radiation is a significant effect when heterodyne systems are used on targets with internal motion. The complete system and the results obtained are then described. The compact optics head contains a waveguide laser, an acousto-optic modulator and SAW chirp devices; it has 45 mm diameter transmit and receive apertures. Whem many returns are integrated, ranges of several kilometres are obtained off natural targets with an accuracy of 10 m. From the Doppler shift off a moving target, radial velocity can be determined simultaneously with the range when an up-chirp/down-chirp technique is used; an accuracy of better than 1 m s−1 is demonstrated.
