    Notes: Summary TheDusmoecetes species complex on sub-Antarctic Marion Island comprises two species. The larger species,D. similis (C.O. Waterhouse), feeds on angiosperms as adults and detritus as larvae, whereas the smaller species,D. marioni Jeannel feeds on bryophytes in all stages.D. similis has seven larval instars and a generation time of one year or longer.D. marioni has between five and seven larval instars, depending on the plant community it inhabits, and a generation time of one year or less. Immatures ofD. similis have a theoretical null point of development of -0.62°C and aQ 10 of 3.57. In both species there are overlapping generations in the field, although in the case ofD. similis there is a distinct seasonal emergence of adults starting in September. Mean standing crop of larvae on the coastal plain is approximately 5.5 kg (dry mass)·ha-1, but can be as high as 11.85 kg (dry mass)·ha-1 inAzorella selago dominated communities. This study indicates that both species are important herbivores and/or detritivores on Marion Island.

    Notes: Abstract The life cycle ofCryptochlora perforans is described under culture conditions, including the following stages: Naked and walled amoebae, cysts, coccoid, palmelloid and flagellate stages. Phagotrophy of living diatoms, movement and reproduction are documented. Amoebae ofCryptochlora are chemotactically attracted by damaged algal filaments, perforate and penetrate such filaments, and subsequently engulf part of their contents. A comparison is made with a culture ofChlorarachnion reptans Geitler, according to earlier and own observations. Chloroplast structure as well as zoospore morphology confirm close affinities betweenCryptochlora andChlorarachnion. Generic characters as well as possible phylogenetic affinities with amoeboidXanthophyta andProtozoa are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Public suspicion of science stems from science's challenging of perceptions and myths about reality, and a public fear of new technology. The result is a susceptibility to pseudoscience. In claiming that creation ‘science’ is as valid as evolution the creationists misquote scientists and seek to spread their own ‘scientific’ myths concerning a young age for the earth, an act of creation based on a particular literalist interpretation of the Christian Bible and a single worldwide flood. They use methods of debate and politics, rather than scientific research. A selection of their arguments is examined and the nature of the evidence for evolution is discussed. Problems with the creation ‘science’ model are noted. In the myth of the hundredth monkey phenomenon, original research is misquoted to denigrate scientific research and support sentimental ideas of paranormal events. The misuse of science is seen as damaging to society because it reduces the effective gathering and application of scientific information. However, pseudoscience provides a valuable guide to gaps in public scientific education.

    Notes: This paper gives an introduction to X-ray microanalysis for biologists. The physical principles of X-ray microanalysis and the instrumentation used in wavelength-dispersive and energy-dispersive analysis are reviewed. A special problem in biological microanalysis is the adequate preparation of the specimen: The preparative method must retain the localization of the element(s) of interest and allow identification of morphological features at the level of analytical resolution. Conventional preparation methods for electron microscopy have only a limited applicability in biological X-ray microanalysis, and often cryomethods have to be used. Methods for qualitative analysis and some common pitfalls and artefacts are discussed. The possibilities and limitations of electron-probe X-ray microanalysis with regard to biological specimens are compared to those of other microanalytical techniques.

    Notes: A quantification program for obtaining three-dimensional image information from high voltage electron microscope stereo pair pictures was developed for a Luzex 5000 image analyzer. A zero tilt image was used as a reference. A real-time image processor system was introduced to improve the image quality and to reduce the beam damage of the specimens. Some modifications of the optical system and the specimen stage were made to improve the accuracy and efficiency of stereoscopy. The accuracy of the measurement was considerably improved by these modifications. Some basic problems and limitations of the method are discussed.

(T.) uriticae respectively. The daily reproduction was as low as 0.6–0.3 eggs/♂/day when females were maintained on royal jelly, molasses, honey or their combinations.
