    Description: Die Sicherung einer nachhaltigen Energieversorgung ist eine zentrale Voraussetzung für eine stabile wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Entwicklung. Erneuerbaren Energien fällt dabei eine entscheidende Rolle zu, da sie neben der ökonomischen und sozialen Entwicklung einen Beitrag zum Klima- und Umweltschutz leisten können. Indien hat in den vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnten einen Ruf als kommende Weltmacht erlangt, die derzeit noch in der Position ist, wichtige Entscheidungen für ein nachhaltiges Energiesystem zu treffen. Zudem verfügt das Land aufgrund seiner geographischen Lage über gute natürliche Rahmenbedingungen für erneuerbare Energien. Deutsche Unternehmen wiederum sind innerhalb derselben Zeitspanne zu Weltmarktführern auf dem Gebiet der erneuerbaren Energietechnologie aufgestiegen. Auf den ersten Blick scheint also die Kombination aus dem indischen Marktpotential und dem Know-how deutscher Unternehmen im Bereich der erneuerbaren Energien eine Win-win-Situation zu ergeben. Aus diesem Grund beschäftigt sich Marie-Christine Gröne in ihrer vorliegenden Studie mit den derzeitigen und zukünftigen Chancen und Hemmnissen für den Ausbau der erneuerbaren Energien in Indien unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Interessen deutscher Unternehmen. Dabei stehen neben politischen und (energie)wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen besonders die Einschätzungen deutscher und indischer Experten und die Erfahrungen der Pionierunternehmen aus Deutschland im Vordergrund. Da sowohl Indien als auch deutsche Firmen der Branche vor Ort erst am Anfang ihres Engagements im Bereich der erneuerbaren Energien stehen, legt Gröne einen Schwerpunkt auf die Evaluierung der Zukunftsperspektiven.

    Description: An efficient procedure is proposed in order to define realistic lower limits of velocity errors of a non-permanent GPS station (NPS), i.e. a station where the antenna is installed and operates for short time periods, typically 10-20 days per year. Moreover, the proposed method is aimed at being independent from the standard GPS data processing. The key is to appropriately subsample the coordinate time series of several continuous GPS stations (CGPSs) situated nearby or inside the considered NPS network, in order to simulate the NPS behavior and to estimate the velocity errors associated with the subsampling procedure. The obtained data are therefore used as lower limits to accept or correct the error estimates provided by standard data processing. The proposed approach is applied to data from the dense non-permanent network in the Central Apennine of Italy based on a sequence of solutions for the overlapping time spans 1999-2003, 1999-2004, 1999-2005 and 1999-2007. Both the original and error-corrected velocity patterns are used to compute the strain rate fields. The comparison between the corresponding results reveals large differences that could lead to divergent interpretations about the kinematics of the study area.

    Description: Anecdotes of concurrent eruptions at Etna, Stromboli, and Vulcano (Southern Italy) have persisted for more than 2000 years and volcanologists in recent and past times have hypothesized a causal link among these volcanoes. Here this hypothesis is tested. To introduce the problem and provide examples of the type of expected volcanic phenomena, narratives of the most notable examples of concurrent eruptions are provided. Then the frequency of eruptions at each individual volcano is analysed for about the last 300 years and the expected probability of concurrent eruptions is calculated to compare it to the observed probability. Results show that the occurrence of concurrent eruptions is often more frequent than a random probability, particularly for the Stromboli-Vulcano pair. These results are integrated with a statistical analysis of the earthquake catalogue to find evidence of linked seismicity in the Etnean and Aeolian areas. Results suggest a moderate incidence of non-random concurrent eruptions, but available data are temporally limited and do not allow an unequivocal identification of plausible triggers; our results, however, are the first attempt to quantify a more-than-2000-years-old curious observation and constitute a starting point for more sophisticated analyses of new data in the future. We look forward to our prediction of a moderate incidence of concurrent eruptions being confirmed or refuted with the passage of time and occurrence of new events.

    Description: Earthquakes may be traumatic events and as many other environmental emergencies, like storm or floods, may cause more damages than expected when who experiences the phenomena does not know how to behave in the fall. Provided that it is always not feasible to rely on prediction when dealing with earthquakes or extreme meteorological events, preparedness proves to be an efficient (and certainly the most recommendable and cheap) way to face emergencies. Education and training are thus two ingredients to help citizens to perceive the scientific information formerly confined in the laboratories, in particular in the domain of the environmental risk. The “O3E” innovative program (European Observatory for Education and Environment) is established after 10 years (1997-2007) of regional and national original programs (“Sismos of the Schools”), and from Italian and Swiss experiences concerning environment tools for education. The project, that is a cooperation between France, Italy and Switzerland, is born to promote a responsible behaviour of citizens in front of the evolution of a society where scientific information is promptly available. ARGAL (Agency for Geological Risk in the Latin Arc) operates the administrative and technical coordination. The objective of this program is to create a school network in the Alpine and Mediterranean areas equipped with environmental sensors of an educational vocation. The data on the movement of the ground (seismometers), the temperatures and precipitations (weather stations), the flows of rivers (hydrogeology) recorded in the schools and processed by the students are collected on dedicated servers and then made available through internet to the entire educational community. This network “O3E”, once installed, is the starting point of activities. Indeed, various general objectives are pursued: - To promote the applied sciences and new technologies. - To put in network the actors of Education and formation. - To develop the sense of the autonomy and the responsibility in the young people. - To reinforce and develop relationships with regional partners of the educational and university fields. - To support a rational awakening for the prevention of the natural risks that can make the difference during the event in terms of safety. With these premises, the “O3E” experience sets up a permanent educational network of citizens in the Alpine and Mediterranean areas, building an exchange of knowledge on natural risks prevention.

The growth rate values calculated by this model are in turn used to estimate how the amplitudes of actual gradient drift waves vary over time as the plasma drifts and the growth rates change with time. Ionospheric imaging is again used in order to determine plasma drift velocities. The final output from the model is in turn used to assess the linear correlation between the scintillation indices S4 and σØ recorded by several GPS L1 band scintillation receivers stationed in the north polar cap and mean gradient drift wave amplitudes. Four separate magnetic storm periods, totaling 13 days, are analyzed in this way. The results show weak but significant linear correlations between the mean wave amplitudes calculated and the observed scintillation indices at F layer altitudes.

    Description: In July 1998, an Mw = 6.2 earthquake struck the islands of Faial, Pico and San Jorge (in the Azores Archipelago), registering VIII on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale and causing major destruction in the northeastern part of Faial. The main shock was located offshore, 8 km North East of the island, and it triggered a seismic sequence that lasted for several weeks. The existing data for this earthquake include both the general tectonic environment of the region and the teleseismic information. This is accompanied by one strong-motion record obtained 15 km from the epicentre, the epicentre location of aftershocks, and a large collection of the damage inflicted to the building stock (as poor rubble masonry, of 2-3 storeys). The present study was carried out in two steps: first, with a finite-fault stochastic simulation method of ground motion at sites throughout the affected islands, for two possible locations of the rupturing fault and for a large number of combinations of rupture mechanisms (as a parametric analysis); secondly, the damage to buildings was modelled using a well-known macroseismic method that considers the building typologies and their associated vulnerabilities. The main intent was to integrate different data (geological, seismological and building features) to produce a scenario model to reproduce and justify the level of damage generated during the Faial earthquake. Finally, through validation of the results provided by these different approaches, we obtained a complete procedure for the parameters of a first model for the production of seismic damage scenarios for the Azores Islands region.

    Description: This contribution presents a semiempirical model describing the effective relative viscosity of crystalbearing magmas as function of crystal fraction and strain rate. The model was applied to an extensive data set of magmatic suspensions and partially molten rocks providing a range of values for the fitting parameters that control the behavior of the relative viscosity curves as a function of the crystal fraction in an intermediate range of crystallinity (30–80 vol % crystals). The analysis of the results and of the materials used in the experiments allows for evaluating the physical meaning of the parameters of the proposed model. We show that the model, by varying the parameters within the ranges obtained during the fitting procedure, is able to describe satisfactory the effective relative viscosity as a function of crystal fraction and strain rate for suspensions having different geometrical characteristics of the suspended solid fraction.

    Description: This paper presents a review of the ionospheric scintillation monitoring and modelling by the European groups involved in COST 296. Several of these groups have organized scintillation measurement campaigns at low and high latitudes. Some characteristic results obtained from the measured data are presented. The paper also addresses the modeling activities: four models, based on phase screen techniques, with different options and application domains are detailed. Finally some new trends for research topics are given. This includes the wavelet analysis, the high latitudes analysis, the construction of scintillation maps and the mitigation techniques.

    Description: At least two transient events of extreme global warming occurred superimposed on the long-term latest Paleocene and early Eocene warming trend in the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) (or ETM1 ~55.5 Ma) and the Elmo (or ETM2 ~53.6 Ma). Other than warmth, the best known PETM is characterized by (1) significant injection of 13C-depleted carbon into the ocean-atmosphere system, (2) deep-sea carbonate dissolution, (3) strong biotic responses, and (4) perturbations of the hydrological cycle. Documentation of the other documented and suspected "hyperthermals" is, as yet, insufficient to assess whether they are similar in nature to the PETM. Here we present and discuss biomagnetostratigraphic data and geochemical records across two lower Eocene successions deposited on a continental margin of the western Tethys: the Farra and Possagno sections in the Venetian pre-Alps. We recognize four negative carbon isotope excursions within chron C24. Three of these shifts correlate to known or suspected hyperthermals: the PETM, the Eocene thermal maximum 2 (~53.6 Ma), and the informally named "X event" (~52.5 Ma). The fourth excursion lies within a reverse subchron and occurred between the latter two. In the Farra section, the X event is marked by a ~0.6% negative carbon isotope excursion and carbonate dissolution. Furthermore, the event exhibits responses among calcareous nannofossils, planktic foraminifera, and dinoflagellates that are similar to, though less intense than, those observed across the PETM. Sedimentological and quantitative micropaleontological data from the Farra section also suggest increased weathering and runoff as well as sea surface eutrophication during this event.

    Description: Public works in progress in the Campanian plain north of Somma-Vesuvius recently encountered the remains of a prehistoric settlement close to the town of Afragola. Rescue excavations brought to light a Bronze Age village partially destroyed and buried by pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) of the Vesuvian Pomici di Avellino eruption (3.8 14C ka BP) and subsequently sealed by alluvial deposits. Volcanological and rockmagnetic investigations supplemented the excavations. Careful comparison between volcanological and archaeological stratigraphies led to an understanding of the timing of the damage the buildings suffered when they were struck by a series of PDCs. The first engulfed the village, located some 14 km to the north of the inferred vent, and penetrated into the dwellings without causing major damage. The buildings were able to withstand the weak dynamic pressure of the currents and deviate their path, as shown by the magnetic fabric analyses. Some later collapsed under the load of the deposits piled up by successive currents. Stepwise demagnetization of the thermal remanent magnetization (TRM) carried by potsherds embedded in the deposits yields deposition temperatures in the order of 260– 320 °C, fully consistent with those derived from pottery and lithic fragments from other distal and proximal sites. The fairly uniform temperature of the deposits is here ascribed to the lack of pervasive air entrainment into the currents. This, in turn, resulted from the lack of major topographical obstacles along the flat plain. The coupling of structural damage and sedimentological analyses indicates that the currents were not destructive in the Afragola area, but TRM data indicate they were still hot enough to cause death or severe injury to humans and animals. The successful escape of the entire population is apparent from the lack of human remains and from thousands of human footprints on the surface of the deposits left by the first PDCs. People were thus able to walk barefoot across the already emplaced deposits and escape the subsequent PDCs. The rapid cooling of the deposits was probably due to both their thinness and heat dissipation due to condensation of water vapour released in the mixture by magma–water interaction.

    Description: Stratospheric balloons are powerful and affordable tools for a wide spectrum of scientific investigations that are carried out at the stratosphere level. They are less expensive compared to satellite projects and have the capability to lift payloads from a few kilograms to a couple of tons or more, well above the troposphere, for more than a month. Another interesting feature of these balloons, which is not viable in satellites, is the short turnaround time, which enables frequent flights. We introduce the PEGASO (Polar Explorer for Geomagnetism And other Scientific Observations) project, a stratospheric payload designed and developed by the INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia), Rome and La Sapienza University, Rome. The project was sponsored by the PNRA (Progetto Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide), Italy (Peterzen et al., 2003). This light payload (10 kg) was used by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and Andoya Rocket Range (ARR) for five different scientific missions. PEGASO carries a 3-component flux-gate magnetometer, uses a solar cell array as the power source and has a GPS location system. The bi-directional telemetry system for data transfer and the remote control system were IRIDIUM based.

    Description: A database of magnetic susceptibility measurements of stony achondrites (acapulcoitelodranite clan, winonaites, ureilites, angrites, aubrites, brachinites, howardite-eucrite-diogenite (HED) clan, and Martian meteorites, except lunar meteorites) is presented and compared to our previous work on chondrites. This database provides an exhaustive study of the amount of iron-nickel magnetic phases (essentially metal and more rarely pyrrhotite and titanomagnetite) in these meteorites. Except for ureilites, achondrites appear much more heterogeneous than chondrites in metal content, both at the meteorite scale and at the parent body scale. We propose a model to explain the lack of or inefficient metal segregation in a low gravity context. The relationship between grain density and magnetic susceptibility is discussed. Saturation remanence appears quite weak in most metal-bearing achondrites(HED and aubrites)compared to Martian meteorites. Ureilites are a notable exception and can carry a strong remanence, similar to most chondrites.

    Description: Envisat MERIS and AATSR data have been acquired in the framework of the Eurorisk-Preview project. The project addresses European civil protections and proposes to develop, at the European scale, new information services to support the risk management. In Italy one of the most important natural risks is due to the presence of volcanoes. Mt. Etna in Sicily, displays persistent activity, periodically interrupted by eruptions, which emit volcanic aerosol and ash to different altitudes in troposphere affecting the central Mediterranean area. In order to test the use of MERIS and AATSR data to derive emitted particles parameters as optical depth, effective radius and the ash mass of particles, the already developed remote sensing techniques has been adapted. MERIS and AATSR data acquired during the Mt. Etna 2002-2003 volcanic eruption has been chosen. The use of VIS and TIR bands of the two sensor demonstrates the potential to derive useful information on plume particles and to monitor the volcanic plume during eruption if frequent and high resolution data is available in near real time.

    Description: The Antarctic Geological Drilling (ANDRILL) program — a collaboration between Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and the United States that is one of the larger programs endorsed by the International Polar Year (IPY; http:// www .ipy .org) — successfully completed the drilling phase of the Southern McMurdo Sound (SMS) Project in December 2007. This second drill core of the program’s campaign in the western Ross Sea, Antarctica, complements the results of the first drilling season [Naish et al., 2007] by penetrating deeper into the stratigraphic section in the Victoria Land Basin and extending the recovered time interval back to approximately 20 million years ago.

    Description: The aim of this study was to investigate the microbial community thriving at two shallow hydrothermal vents off Panarea Island (Italy). Physico-chemical characteristics of thermal waters were examined in order to establish the effect of the vents on biodiversity of both Bacteria and Archaea. Water and adjacent sediment samples were collected at different times from two vents, characterised by different depth and temperature, and analysed to evaluate total microbial abundances, sulphuroxidising and thermophilic aerobic bacteria. Total microbial abundances were on average of the order of 105 cells ml-1, expressed as picoplanktonic size fraction. Picophytoplanktonic cells accounted for 0.77–3.83% of the total picoplanktonic cells. The contribution of bacterial and archaeal taxa to prokaryotic community diversity was investigated by PCR–DGGE fingerprinting method. The number of bands derived from bacterial DNA was highest in the DGGE profiles of water sample from the warmest and deepest site (site 2). In contrast, archaeal richness was highest in the water of the coldest and shallowest site (site 1). Sulphur-oxidising bacteria were detected by both culture- dependent and -independent methods. The primary production at the shallow hydrothermal system of Panarea is supported by a complex microbial community composed by phototrophs and chemolithotrophs.

    Description: This article presents the results of a detailed study of the effects of the 1883 earthquake, which occurred at the island of Ischia (Gulf of Naples) and produced the total destruction of buildings in the epicentral area (Casamicciola town). Despite the moderate magnitude, this event was characterised by very high intensities (Imax = XI degree MCS) mainly due to the shallow depth of the source. The study of the earthquake shows that the intensities, which decreased rapidly with distance, were affected by source directivity, according to the causative fault geometry and tectonic structures, while local amplification of damage was observed where soft soils outcrop. The attenuation of seismic intensity with distance was evaluated using the well-known relation of intensity versus epicentral distance (Blake’s method). The diverse gradients of attenuation, observed in different directions, were ascribed to the various geological features of the shallow crust of the island. In order to evaluate the role of geology in the damage level, we computed different attenuation models for stiff and soft soils outcropping on the island. A systematic local amplification of about 1 MCS degree associated to the presence of reworked tuffs was obtained. This study also shows the influence of geological conditions on the evaluation of macroseismic data and supplies useful elements to derive a predictive map of potential site effects.

    Description: Detailed investigations carried out in support of the new Italian geological map at the scale 1:50 000 (CARG Project) resulted in the definition of new formal lithostratigraphic units (Brenno Fm, Tabiago Fm, Cibrone Fm) within the previously undifferentiated Scaglia and in the first integrated studies on calcareous plankton, including calcareous nannofossils. The Tabiago Formation consists of marls and pelagic limestones with some intercalations of turbidites containing large shallow-water displaced foraminifera in the upper part. Its age ranges from the Early Paleocene (foraminiferal Zone P1b, nannofossil Zone NP2) to the Middle Eocene (foraminiferal Zone P12, nannofossil Zone NP15). The lowermost biozones of the Paleocene (P0, Pα=P. eugubina, and P1a) are missing. The Cibrone Formation is represented by scattered outcrops and consists of marls and silty marls with minor arenites. Its age is Middle Eocene (Zone P12, Zone NP15-NP16). The Paleocene portion of the well-exposed Tabiago section is characterized by alternating couplets of soft marls and hard limestones. A multidisciplinary investigation was undertaken in order to understand the environmental significance of these repetitive cycles. Abundance and composition of the planktonic foraminiferal populations, degree of bioturbation, and calcium carbonate content were measured. In the marly semicouplet the fauna is relatively poor; it is enriched in specimens of the genus Subbotina, an indicator of nutrient-rich, colder waters. In the calcareous semicouplet the fauna is enriched in taxa of the genus Morozovella, an indicator of warm, nutrient-poor tropical waters. A possible interpretation of the sedimentary rhythms is that the marly interbeds were deposited in periods of high seasonality, when enhanced circulation brings nutrient enrichment at the surface and good ventilation at the bottom. On the contrary, the calcareous interbeds were deposited at times of low seasonality with sluggish circulation and nutrient-poor surface waters. In order to evaluate the possible extra-terrestrial forcing of the observed cyclicity, a spectral analysis was carried out on hundreds of quantitative data concerning foraminiferal composition and carbonate content. The Milankovitch frequency for precession (21 ky), obliquity (41 ky) and short excentricity (100 ky) cycles were recorded with the strongest signal related to obliquity.

    Description: The 5th April 2003 paroxysmal event was the strongest explosion that has occurred at Stromboli in the last 50 years. This event lasted only few minutes and was characterised by two violent explosions, followed by gas and pyroclast emission. In order to constrain models of the dynamics of the paroxystic event the viscosity of anhydrous and hydrous Stromboli high potassium (HK)-basaltic melts have been measured. Viscosity has been investigated in the low viscosity range with the falling sphere method at superliquidus temperatures (1423 to 1673 K) and 0.5 GPa and in the high viscosity range with micropenetration near the glass transition temperature (723 to 1035 K) at atmospheric pressure. Falling sphere experiments were performed in a piston cylinder apparatus with melts whose water content varies from nominally anhydrous (0.02 wt.% H2O) to 4.16 wt.% H2O. The combination of high- and low-viscosity data permits a general description of the viscosity as a function of temperature and water contentusing a modified Tamman–Vogel–Fulcher equation. Using these new viscosity data, an estimation of the flow regime and magma velocity is performed. Our data suggest that the ascent of magma from the 7–8 km deep reservoir to a shallower reservoir located at about 3 km of depth, may occur within minutes. Moreover, we infer a turbulent flow regime. Finally, our estimates of the ascent velocity agree qualitatively with results from petrological studies (e.g. [Bertagnini, A., Métrich, N., Landi, P., Rosi, M., 2003. Stromboli volcano (Aeolian Archipelago, Italy): an openwindowon the deep-feeding system of a steady state basaltic volcano. Journal of Geophysical Research 108, 2336–2350.]), which indicate a turbulent flow regime and rapid ascent velocities such to inhibit volatile-loss-induced crystallization.We conclude that hazard evaluation at Stromboli Island should incorporate the likelihood of very rapid ascent of less-evolved melts from depth.

    Description: The Chianatelle-Felice-Olivella drainage galleries complex in the Vesuvius National Park (Naples) The Chianatelle-Felice-Olivella complex, located close to the village of Sant’Anastasia on Mt. Vesuvius, is constituted of 4 drainage galleries, each several tens of meters long, with a total drainage of about 0,1 l/s. Their present structure is due to the hydraulic works made, at the end of the 19th century by the king Ferdinando II of Bourbon, whereas the presence of an underground aquifer in this area had been noticed before the 79 a.C. eruption. The underground complex is not only an important archaeological site, but it is nowadays a part of the monitoring network for the Vesuvius volcanic risk assessment managed by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. Some important variation of the geochemical characteristics of the Olivella 1 gallery were recorded in coincidence with the October 11, 1999, earthquake.

    Description: In this work, we analyse continuous measurements of microseisms to assess the reliability of the fundamental resonance frequency estimated by means of the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratio within the 0.1–1 Hz frequency range, using short-period sensors (natural period of 1 s). We apply the H/V technique to recordings of stations installed in two alluvial basins with different sedimentary cover thicknesses—the Lower Rhine Embayment (Germany) and the Gubbio Plain (Central Italy). The spectral ratios are estimated over the time–frequency domain, and we discuss the reliability of the results considering both the variability of the microseism activity and the amplitude of the instrumental noise. We show that microseisms measured by short period sensors allow the retrieval of fundamental resonance frequencies greater than about 0.1–0.2 Hz, with this lower frequency bound depending on the relative amplitude of themicroseism signal and the self-noise of the instruments. In particular,we show an examplewhere the considered short-period sensor is connected to instruments characterized by an instrumental noise level which allows detecting only fundamental frequencies greater than about 0.4 Hz. Since the frequency at which the peak of the H/V spectral ratio is biased depends upon the seismic signal-to-instrument noise ratio, the power spectral amplitude of instrumental self-noise should be always considered when interpreting the frequency of the peak as the fundamental resonance frequency of the investigated site.

    Description: We present the first helium isotope data for thermal waters and gas emissions on the islands of Terceira, Graciosa, Faial, Pico and Flores, as well as new data for Sao Miguel. The results allow us to track current mantle degassing associated with the Azores hot spot, to delineate its spatial distribution and to discuss its possible origin. As a general rule, we find that free gases tend to display somewhat higher 3He/4He ratio than groundwaters.We argue that this difference is likely due to radiogenic helium inputs to aquifers duringwater– rock interactions and, therefore, that gas phases are the fluid carriers with the most representative of mantle source signature. The measured 3He/4He ratios (normalized to the air ratio, Ra) range from lower-than-MORB values (5.23–6.07 Ra) on central Sao Miguel, to MORB values on Faial (8.53 Ra) and Flores (8.04 Ra) – located on either side of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge – and to plume-type values on Graciosa (11.2 Ra) and Terceira (13.5 Ra) where free gases also display ten times higher-than-MORB CO2/3He ratios (1.8–2.6×1010). Such a wide He isotopic range and its spatial distribution corroborate with available data for volcanic rocks, indicating that plume's head presently underlies the central part of the archipelago. The plume-type 3He/4He ratios on Terceira and Graciosa agree with geochemical and seismic evidence of a deep-rooted mantle plume feeding the Azores hot spot. Our finding that high 3He/4He ratios correspond to low 3He concentrations and high (arctype) CO2/3He values exclude a simple plume supply of 3He-rich primitive mantle. Instead, the simultaneity of both elevated CO2/3He and 3He/4He ratios is best explained by a 3He-rich contribution from the lower mantle diluted in a CO2-rich feeding plume that contains a recycled altered oceanic plate component. The alternative possibility of an enhanced time-integrated 3He/(U+Th) ratio in the Azores plume due to a greater compatibility of helium relative to U and Th during melting events is difficult to reconcile with the enriched pattern of volcanic rocks from the central islands. In any case, the Azores plume should derive from a mantle reservoir that could escape convective homogenization for a very long period of time, in agreement with subchondritic osmium isotopic ratios in volcanic rocks from the central islands of the archipelago.

    Description: Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is currently the soundest basis for the rational evaluation of ground-motion hazard for site-specific engineering design and assessment purposes. An increasing number of building codes worldwide acknowledge the uniform hazard spectra as the reference to determine design actions on structures and to select input ground motions for seismic structural analysis. This is the case, for example, in Italy where the new seismic code also requires the seismic input for nonlinear dynamic analysis to be selected on the basis of dominating events, for example, identified via disaggregation of seismic hazard. In the present study, the design earthquakes expressed in terms of representative magnitude (M), distance (R), and ε were investigated for a wide region in the southern Apennines, Italy. To this aim, the hazards corresponding to peak ground acceleration and spectral acceleration at 1 sec with a return period of 475 yr were disaggregated. For each of the disaggregation variables the shape of the joint and marginal probability density functions were studied. The first two modes expressed by M, R, and ε were extracted and mapped for the study area. The results shown provide additional information, in terms of source and ground-motion parameters, to be used along with the standard hazard maps to better select the design earthquakes. The analyses also allow us to assess how various frequency ranges of the design spectrum are differently contributed by seismic sources in the study area.

    Description: A quantitative analysis of planktonic foraminifera, coupled with petrophysical and paleomagnetic measurements and 14C AMS calibrations, was carried out on a deep core recovered in the Sardinia Channel (Western Mediterranean Sea), during the CIESM Sub2 survey, providing an integrated stratigraphic time-framework over the last 80 kyr. Significant changes in the quantitative distribution of planktonic foraminifera allowed the identification of several eco-bioevents useful to accurately mark the boundaries of the eco-biozones widely recognised in the Western Mediterranean records and used for large scale correlations. Namely, 10 eco-biozones were identified based on the relative abundance of selected climate sensitive planktonic foraminiferal species. Sixteen codified eco-bioevents were correlated with the Alboran Sea planktonic foraminiferal data and four climatic global events (Sapropel S1, Younger Dryas, Greenland Isotope Interstadial 1, Greenland Isotope Stadial 2, Heinrich event H1-H6) were recognized. The eco-bioevents together with the 14C AMS calibrations allowed us to define an accurate age model, spanning between 2 and 83 kyr. The reliability of the age model was confirmed by comparing the colour reflectance (550 nm%) data of the studied record with the astronomically tuned record from the Ionian sea (ODP-Site 964). A mean sedimentation rate of about 7 cm/kyr included three turbidite event beds that were chronologically constrained within the relative low stand and lowering sea level phases of the MIS 4 and 3. The deep-sea sedimentary record includes a distinct tephra occurring at the base of the core which dates 78 ka cal. BP. The paleomagnetic data provide a well-defined record of the characteristic remanent magnetization that may be used to reconstruct the geomagnetic paleosecular variation for the Mediterranean back to 83 kyr.

    Description: On April 6th 2009 a Mw=6.3, Imax=9-10 earthquake struck the Abruzzi region of Central Italy (http://portale.ingv.it/highlights/view?set_language=en). We find similarities in some peculiar characteristics of the 2009 sequence and of some historical events occurred in the area, in particular in 1461 and 1762. We observe strong analogies in the distribution of the intensities and in the areas of the strongest effects produced by these shocks, as well as in the temporal evolution.

    Description: The importance of detecting possible electromagnetic signatures due to big earthquakes is self-evident, signatures which can be either anticipating, simultaneous or subsequent with respect to the main shock. Taking advantage of the present low Earth orbiting CHAMP satellite, we apply two “ad hoc” techniques both based on the Information Theory (after the seminal monograph by Shannon [1]) to the satellite magnetic data with the aim at extracting eventual time anomalies. These techniques have different time-space resolutions: the first technique requires a preliminary spherical harmonic analysis of daily magnetic data and, potentially, detects long-wavelength variations, while the second uses a preliminary wavelet analysis and can detect shorter-wavelength anomalies. Some examples are given for magnetic satellite data taken in correspondence with the two big earthquakes occurred in the Sumatra region on 26 December 2004 (M = 9.1) and 28 March 2005 (M = 8.6).

    Description: Facies analysis applied to several up to 220-m-deep cores, taken by Regione Lombardia in the central-northern Po Plain, allowed to recognize an overall regressive sequence consisting of cyclotemic shallow marine and fluvial-deltaic deposits overlain by distal to proximal braidplain sediments. Magnetostratigraphy, coupled with calcareous nannoplankton biostratigraphy, was used to date marine and fluvial-deltaic sediments to the early Pleistocene and continental sediments to the middle–late Pleistocene. Sediment accumulation rates were of ~0.3-0.4 mm/yr in the early Pleistocene, whereas an overall reduction in sediment accumulation rates to ~0.06-0.08 mm/yr, associated to relevant unconformities, characterized the middle-late Pleistocene. Stratigraphic evidences from petrographic, sedimentologic and palynologic analyses highlight in the Regione Lombardia cores a drastic reorganization of vegetational, fluvial, and Alpine drainage patterns, associated to a sequence boundary termed the “R surface”. The “R surface”, seismically traceable across the Po Plain subsurface, was constrained magnetostratigraphically to the first prominent Pleistocene glacio-eustatic lowstand of marine isotope stage (MIS) 22 at 0.87 Ma at the end of the Mid-Pleistocene Revolution, when climate worsened globally and locally caused the onset of the first major Pleistocene glaciation in the Alps. Most marine deposits in the cores lie above sea level highstands of corresponding age, suggesting that they have been uplifted. In order to estimate the observed rock uplift, sediments were back-stripped to elevations at times of deposition (expressed in meters above current sea level) by applying a simple Airy compensation model. The correlation of the isostatically corrected sedimentary facies to a glacio-eustatic reference curve obtained from classic oxygen isotope studies highlights a positive elevation mismatch (rock uplift) in the range of 70-120 m, which occurred after the onset of the major Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles at rates of at least 0.15-0.09 mm/yr. Although the driving forces of the observed rock uplift cannot be unambiguously identified, but its timing of onset after the beginning of the major Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles and the low seismicity observed in the most of the Regione Lombardia area seem to point to an isostatic readjustment of the chain probably due to the long-term erosional removal of sediments during major Pleistocene glacial advances.

    Description: Using a Monte Carlo method based on a random walk in ad hoc N-dimensional phase space, we construct N random time series having prescribed coherence spatial decay. We apply the method in seismology by designing a numerical experiment to investigate how the coherence of the bedrock motion relates to the coherence of the surface ground motion in a sedimentary valley. The main features of the coherence behavior in the valley are found to tie in with data analysis and field observations.

    Description: The site of the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO) located in the countryside near Pisa (Tuscany, Italy) was investigated by a microgravity vertical gradient (MVG) survey. The EGO site houses the VIRGO interferometric antenna for gravitational waves detection. The microgravity survey aims to highlight the gravity anomalies of high-frequency related to more superficial geological sources in order to obtain a detailed model of the lithologic setting of the VIRGO site, that will allow an estimate of the noise induced by seismic waves and by Newtonian interference. This paper presents the results of the gradiometric survey of 2006 in the area of the interferometric antenna. MVG measurements allow us to enhance the high frequency signal strongly associated with the shallow structures. The gradient gravity map shows a main negative pattern that seems related to the trending of the high density layer of gravel that was evidenced in geotechnical drillings executed along the orthogonal arms during the construction of the VIRGO complex. Calibrating the relationship between the vertical gradient and the depth of the gravel interface we have computed a model of gravity gradient for the whole VIRGO site, defining the 3D distribution of the top surface of this layer. This latter shows a NE-SW negative pattern that may represent a palaeo-bed alluvial of the Serchio from the Bientina River system.

    Description: This paper reviews the main observations on slow earthquakes and low frequency tremor made along the Apennines, the main seismic active zone of Italy. These observations have been made using a geodetic interferometer system operating since 1994 in the underground tunnel of Gran Sasso, central Italy, and an underground seismic array (UNDERSEIS) operating since 2002 in the same environment. The observations made in recent years indicate that both phenomena are quite rare and apparently uncorrelated. Slow earthquakes, mainly recorded in 1997 and occasionally later, have probably been caused by the activity of a shallow fault system located near the interferometers. Until now only one tremor episode characterized by low frequency content and duration of several hours has been detected in January 2004, without any correlations with the occurrence of slow or regular earthquakes. The signal to noise ratio of this event is very low, but the results of our detailed analysis show that its frequency contents and wave field characteristics are compatible with a low frequency non volcanic tremor.

    Description: The aim of this paper is to characterize the spatio-temporal distribution of Central-Europe seismicity. Specifically, by using a non-parametric statistical approach, the proportional hazard model, leading to an empirical estimation of the hazard function, we provide some constrains on the time behavior of earthquake generation mechanisms. The results indicate that the most conspic- uous characteristics of MW 4.0+ earthquakes is a temporal clustering lasting a couple of years. This suggests that the probability of occurrence increases immediately after a previous event. After a few years, the process becomes almost time independent. Furthermore, we investigate the cluster properties of the seismicity of Central-Europe, by comparing the obtained result with the one of synthetic catalogs generated by the epidemic type aftershock sequences (ETAS) model, which previously have been successfully applied for short term clustering. Our results indicate that the ETAS is not well suited to describe the seismicity as a whole, while it is able to capture the features of the short- term behaviour. Remarkably, similar results have been previously found for Italy using a higher magnitude threshold.

    Description: There is no information on previous geophysical prospections carried out in the Archaeological Park of Pontecagnano- Faiano, in order to reconstruct the ancient settlement of Picentia, an Etrusco-Campanian and Roman settlement near Salerno (Southern Italy). Therefore, an integrated geophysical survey based on magnetic, geoelectric and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) prospections was executed in the Park. The methods provided a basic map of buried ancient structures at depth from 0.1-0.2 to about 1.5 meters. Magnetic data were processed analyzing the analytical signal of the vertical derivative of the measured gradient and this substantially reduced a strong fence effect. The results of the geophysical prospections showed archaeological structures located close to those discovered in the excavated areas. The shape of the anomalies are usually elongated with well-defined geometrical characteristics. Many anomalies are arranged along orthogonal directions and they are very coherent with the excavated structures, namely the quarters structures of the ancient Picentia.

    Description: A major step in the "Wilson Cycle" is the splitting of a continent and the birth of a new ocean, with the consequent formation of passive plate margins. The transition from a continental to an oceanic rift can be observed today nowhere better than in the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden system. We have carried out during several years a number of expeditions in the axial portion of the Northern Red Sea, in the region where the northernmost nuclei of axial emplacement of oceanic crust can be observed. High resolution multibeam, magnetics, gravity and multichannel seismic reflection surveys from the Thetis Deep revealed rates and modes of initial pulses of sea floor spreading, velocity of S to N axial propagation of the oceanic rift, evolution of initial MORB-type crust and nature of the mantle thermal anomaly that caused the transition from a continental to an oceanic rift. The Thetis deep is made of three en echelon fault-bounded axial basins that are joined together with axial volcanic ridges and a large number of scattered small central volcanoes. The southern basin shows a strong linear magnetic anomaly corresponding to the axial neo-volcanic zone. Two negative symmetric anomalies identified as Matuyama are present in the southernmost part of this basin, suggesting that the emplacement of oceanic crust at this site started roughly 2.5 Ma, with an average half spreading rate of 6 mm/yr. The central sub-basin is also characterized by a strongly magnetic linear neo- volcanic zone that, however, is flanked only by a small, "vanishing" symmetrical negative anomaly suggesting emplacement of oceanic crust not earlier than about 1 Ma. The northern sub-basin does not show a clearly defined linear neo-volcanic zone although it displays a strong central magnetization suggesting initial emplacement of oceanic crust 〈 0.7 Ma. This pattern implies a south to north time progression of the initial emplacement of oceanic crust within the Thetis system, with a propagation rate of about 20 mm/yr. Gravity data inversions constrained by seismic data reveal that the oceanic crust extends from the axial neo-volcanic ridges toward the master faults of the axial depression with crustal thickness ranging from 4 to 6 km. The increasing thickness of basaltic crust toward the edges of the basin together with higher degree of melting, inferred by the geochemistry of the basaltic glasses, and higher central magnetization of the northernmost and youngest basin suggest a pulse of faster spreading rate at the onset of sea-floor spreading.

    Description: The present-day tectonic setting of the Italian peninsula is very complex and involves competing geodynamic processes. In this context, southern peninsular Italy is characterised by extension along the Apenninic belt and in the Tyrrhenian margin and by transpression in the Apulia-Gargano region. The extension is well defined by means of geological, seismological, and contemporary stress data. For the latter only few data are available in the Apulia-Gargano region, leaving the state of stress in that area unresolved. Here we develop a finite-element model of the southern Italian region in order to predict the contemporary stress field. Our model predictions are constrained by model-independent observations of the orientation of maximum horizontal stress (SHmax), the tectonic regime, and the horizontal velocities derived from GPS observations. We performed a blind test with 31 newly acquired SHmax orientations in the Southern Apennines. These new data come from the analysis of borehole breakouts performed in 46 deep oil exploration wells ranging in depth from 1300 to 5500 m. The model results agree with the stress data that define a prevailing NW-SE SHmax orientation along the Apenninic belt and foredeep and thus are capable to predict the stress field where no stress information is available. We first analyse how much model predictions, based on older data, deviate from present-day stress data and then recalibrate the models based on our new stress data, giving insight into the resolution of both models and data. In the studied region, which is affected by low deformation rates, we find that geodetic data alone cannot resolve such low levels of deformation due to the high relative measurement errors. We conclude that both GPS and stress data are required to constrain model results.

    Description: A gradiometric microgravity survey was performed in the site of the EGO (European Gravitational Observatory) located in the countryside near Pisa (Tuscany, Italy). The main purpose of the current study is to delineate high-frequency gravity anomalies and to correlate them with the shallow geological sources in order to obtain a detailed model of the lithological setting. The survey network is compose by 59 gradiometric stations located in the 4X4 Km2 target area. The highly detailed positioning of the station points can be carried out by means of a GPS (Global Positioning System). The measurements were made using a portable tower frame and the LaCoste&Romberg D-model gravity meter with Aliod 100 linear electronic feedback system, with a 1 µgal sensitivity. The study area is located in the Neogene-Quaternary basin of the lower Arno River Valley. The density values calculated from the 2.5D gravity model relative to the gravel (2.1 g/cm3) and the clay (1.5 -1.6 g/cm3). An anomaly negative pattern are shown in the gradient gravity map: the negative gravity anomaly seem related to the increase in depth of the layer of gravel - high layer density. The NE-SW negative pattern should be to represent a palaeo-bed alluvial of the Lower Arno and Serchio of Bientina River system, related to the Late Pleistocene extensional tectonics in the Pisa Plain.

    Description: In the last few years, Robust Satellite data analysis Techniques (RST) have been proposed which significantly improved present capabilities to investigate possible relations between TIR signal fluctuations and earthquake occurrence. This paper, starting from a critical survey of results achieved by applying different RST-based algorithms to different satellite sensors to approximately ten earthquakes (two of them are discussed here for the first time) which occurred in three different continents, tries to offer a first assessment of main achievements, residual limits and perspectives of such studies. Even if it is still not possible to relate (or to exclude) observed anomalous TIR transients definitely to impending earthquakes, such studies demonstrate at least: a) the strong improvement of S/N ratio achievable moving from polar to geostationary satellites; b) the further S/N improvement achievable by using TIR sensors which also offer split-window possibilities; c) the crucial role played by a space-time persistence test to select TIR anomalies candidate to be associated to impending earthquakes; d) the possibility of identifying and correctly discarding TIR anomalies related to clouds and to image navigation errors; e) the scarce importance of spatial resolution of observations which encourages the use of passive MW sensors which are less affected by atmospheric conditions.

    Description: The polar ice sheets are unique paleoclimatic archives and play an important role in recent and future climate. The melting of the big freshwater reservoirs will not only increase the global sea level, but will also influence the ocean currents. Therefore, it will be of particular interest to improve the currently available numeric climate models to achieve more accurate statements about climatic change and its consequences. In this work, the evaluation and the different applications of GPS and altimetry data will be described in respect to enhance models. The antarctic area of investigation, Dronning Maud Land (DML), is of particular interest for German polar research, because both the overwintering station Neumayer and the summer station Kohnen are located within it. In the surroundings of these two stations, highly accurate kinematic GPS measurement were made, which will be the basis for the digital elevation model presented here. Because these data are spatially limited, they are supplemened with remotely sensed data. For this purpose, two airborne altimetry data sets and spaceborne laser altimetry data of the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) are used. The basic tool for the combination of these data sets is the crossover-point analysis. In this process, the elevation differences at equal positions (crossover points) of two different data sets are determined. On the basis of this process, the vertical accuracy of the different data sets and the elevation differences to the ground-based kinematic GPS data are determined. These differences are used to shift the remotely sensed data to the highly accurate ground-based GPS data. With the aid of the geostatistical interpolation method ”Ordinary Kriging” an improved digital elevation model with a resolution of 2.5 km x 2.5 km of the region within 20°W to 20°E and 69° S up to 86°S was generated. A comparison with commonly used digital elevation models, covering the whole continent, shows high elevation differences up to several 100m in the coastal region. Due to the use of ground-based highly accurate GPS data, the elevation model could be significantly improved above all for the coastal region of DML. An application of this elevation model is the re-locating of the ice divides in the area of investigation. Ice divides are the lines between two neighboring catchment areas. Their location is determined by the aspect of the topography. Additionally, static GPS measurements are processed to determine the surface flow velocity of the ice, which is further used for the calculation of the strain rate in the vicinity of Kohnen station. These results will improve the interpretation of climate proxies of the deep ice core (EDML), which was drilled between 2001 and 2006 at Kohnen station within the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA). On the basis of ICESat ice sheet altimetry data from different measurement periods between 2003 and 2007, the mean annual elevation change trend was calculated. From crossover-point analyses mean annual elevation change was determined for the coastal region and the plateau. The mean annual elevation change trend shows decreasing elevations in the coastal region (0.06 m) as well as at the plateau (-0.02 m). The data sets presented here give an explanation about the natural facts in the area of investigation and may be used as input parameter, to improve numeric modeling.

    Description: Diel cycles of dissolved cationic metal concentrations commonly occur in freshwater streams in apparent response to coincident cycles in water quality parameters (pH, O2, temperature). Hourly sampling of the Cd-contaminated Riou Mort (France) revealed large diel cycles in “total” dissolved Cd (232−357 nM; 〈0.45 μm) and “truly” dissolved Cd (56−297 nM; 〈0.02 μm) which were strongly correlated with changes in water pH. Using measured fluxes, a dissolved O2 model was constructed that indicated that benthic metabolic activities, respiration and photosynthesis, were responsible for the diel O2 (and thus, CO2 and pH) variation in the stream. However, microsensor measurements also showed that the pH changes occurred at the biofilm interface earlier than in the bulk water column. This difference in timing was reflected in the Cd dynamics, where pH-controlled sorption effects caused Cd partitioning from the truly dissolved pool onto the biofilm in the morning, and from the truly dissolved pool onto large colloids (0.02−0.45 μm) later in the day. Because this process causes large changes in the bioavailable Cd fraction, it has significant implications for Cd toxicity in freshwater streams. This study demonstrates the profound control of benthic microbiological processes on the cycling of heavy metals in aquatic systems.

    Description: We present a five-year (1997-2001) numerical simulation of daily mean chlorophyll a concentrations at station Geesthacht Weir on the lower Elbe River (Germany) using an extremely simple Lagrangian model driven by (a) water discharge, global radiation, water temperature, and (b) silica observations at station Schmilka in the upper reach of the Elbe River. Notwithstanding the lack of many mechanistic details, the model is able to reproduce observed chlorophyll a variability surprisingly well, including a number of sharp valleys and ascents/descents in the observed time series. The model's success is based on the assumption of three key effects: prevailing light conditions, sporadic limitation of algal growth due to lack of silica and algae loss rates that increase above an empirically specified temperature threshold of 20 degrees C. Trimmed-down model versions are studied to analyse the model's success in terms of these mechanisms. In each of the five years the model consistently fails, however, to properly simulate characteristic steep increases of chlorophyll a concentrations after pronounced spring minima. Curing this model deficiency by global model re-calibration was found to be impossible. However, suspension of silica consumption by algae for up to 10 days in spring is shown to serve as a successful placeholder for processes that are disregarded in the model but apparently play an important role in the distinctly marked period of model failure. For the remainder of the year the very simple model was found to be adequate

    Description: Cosmogenic radionuclides in the one-million-year half-life range offer unique possibilities for age determinations in geophysics. In measurements where the radioactive decay is being utilized as a clock, uncertainties in age determinations may be reduced if the ratio of two radioisotopes with different half-lives can be used as a chronometer. In this work we investigate the atomic ratio of atmospheric 26Al (t1/2= 0.717 Ma) to 10Be (t1/2=1.386 Ma) measured with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), and its potential as a chronometer for dating old ice. The 26Al/10Be ratio decreases with an effective half-life of t1/2(26Al/10Be)= 1.49 Ma. For its application as a chronometer, the atmospheric 26Al/10Be ratio has to be well characterized. However, the properties of atmospheric 26Al have been understood only poorly so far. At the VERA AMS facility of the University of Vienna, a first systematic study of the global variations of the 26Al/10Be ratio in the atmosphere and in surface firn has been carried out, and pilot measurements of the 26Al/10Be ratio in deep Antarctic ice have been performed. Our results indicate that this ratio is globally constant to within 5% in the atmosphere and in surface firn with a mean value of 1.89×10−3. The data also suggest that non-atmospheric sources of 26Al, such as extraterrestrial, in situ produced or re-suspended 26Al, do not contribute significantly to the observed 26Al/10Beratio. In addition, atmospheric mixing seems to exert only aminor influence. In a first application of the method,26Al/10Be ratios were measured in chips collected in connection with the drilling of the lowest part of an ice core (2250 to 2760 m) in Dronning Maud Land,Antarctica. Surprisingly, variable 26Al/10Be ratios ranging between0.5 and up to 2 times the atmospheric ratio were found at different locations in this deep ice core. While the cause for the ratios higher than atmospheric remains unexplained so far, the ratios lower than atmospheric may be caused by radioactive decay, allowing a first dating attempt using the 26Al/10Be ratio. Thus, at an ice depthof 2760 m an approximate date of (6.7±2.6)×105years was established.

    Description: Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) and Convective Inhibition (CIN) play a dominant role in convective precipitation, its genesis and intensity. A global climatology of CAPE and CIN is presented in terms of seasonal means, variances, and trends based on 44 years (1958–2001) of six-hourly ERA-40 reanalysis (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast ECMWF, T106 resolution). CAPE shows large values and high variability in the tropics with maxima over the continents; the seasonal changes are dominated by specific humidity. CIN shows large means and variability in the subtropics. Significant trends in CAPE and CIN give the following results: (i) In general, a CAPE increase is noted during all seasons while, in particular, in autumn CIN shows a decrease over continents. (ii) Splitting of the time series reveals a sign change in trend commencing at the end of the 70s; this is observed in parts of the tropical continents and North America. CAPE and CIN show trends of opposite sign with CAPE increasing in the first half and a decrease during the second half (and vice versa for CIN).

    Description: During the ice breaker expeditions YMER-80, ARCTIC-96 and LOMROG-07 to the Arctic Ocean several piston and gravity cores were collected. In some of the cores from the Central part of the Lomonosov Ridge a conspicuous, thick, gray homogeneous layer was observed. The color, position and physical properties of this layer make this segment to a significant break in the otherwise yellowish and brown stratigraphy. The formation of this gray feature is here hypothesized to have been caused by an early-middle Weichselian outburst from one of the huge ice-dammed lakes that formed in West Siberia when the Barents-Kara ice-sheet expanded onto mainland Russia. Using the new X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanner at Stockholm University, the gray layer could be shown to be characterized by a significant chemical-signature including distinct peaks or minima in Ti, Fe, Ca, as well as a minimum in the redox sensitive element Mn. Out of 38 investigated cores from these tree expeditions, 24 contain a gray unit in the upper 2 m. These 24 cores were taken from the Siberian-, the Central- and the Greenland side of the Lomonosov Ridge as well as from the Gakkel Ridge, the Morris Jesup and the Fram Strait. The presence of the gray layer in these areas thereby gives a prediction of a gray layer in the whole Eurasian Basin. Radiographic images produced on two cores containing the gray layer show a homogeneous, IRD-rich layer with no bioturbation and with a very sharp base boundary. Just below the gray layer in one of the cores an escape trace was observed, indicating a very rapid onset of the deposition of the gray layer. The extension of this layer together with redox conditions, the escape trace, a sharp base boundary and the grain size of this layer suggest an abrupt deposition resulting in oxygen free condition in the pore waters. Most likely this event was caused by an outburst of an ice-dammed lake.

    Description: The Vallo di Diano is the largest intermountain basin in the Southern Apennines (Italy). The basin evolution was controlled by the Quaternary activity of a range-bounding, SW-dipping normal fault system located to the east (Vallo di Diano Fault System, VDFS). Geological and oil industry data define the sin-sedimentary activity of the VDFS up to the Middle Pleistocene. However, commercial profiles do not resolve the shallower, eastern portion of the basin, due to strong lateral heterogeneities and unfavourable surface conditions. Therefore, Late Pleistocene-Holocene activity of the VDFS and its seismogenic potential are still uncertain. To better constrain the shallow structure of the basin, we performed four high-resolution seismic surveys, along its eastern side, where slope breccias and fans cover the Mesozoic carbonate bedrock and bury the VDFS. We also investigated some NW-trending flexures affecting Late Pleistocene fans, that we had previously detected and dubitatively ascribed to recent faulting. Seismic data were acquired with a dense wide-aperture geometry. Two high-resolution (HR) NE-trending profiles, about 1.5 km long, were collected using respectively 5 m and 10 m spaced receivers and sources. Two very high-resolution (VHR) NE-trending profiles, 400 and 350 m long, with densely spaced sources (4 m) and receivers (2 m) were also collected. HR profiling was aimed at imaging alluvial fan thickness and morphology of the underlying carbonate bedrock. VHR surveys targeted the flexures and their possible origin. All lines were acquired with a HR vibroseis source, except for the shortest profile, where we used a buffalo-gun, better suited for very near-surface imaging (z 〈 50 m depth). Seismic imaging consists of reflectivity images obtained by CDP-processing of reflection data complemented by Vp images obtained by multi-scale seismic tomography. The stack sections illuminated the basin down to 0.4-0.5 s TWT and reveal an array of high-angle, generally SW-dipping faults dissecting the bedrock and the alluvial fans. Faulting created accommodation space in the hanging-wall and displaced the different fan generations. Clear reflection truncations in the stack-sections correspond to significant Vp lateral changes in the tomographic images. VHR tomography is well defined along the shortest line down to 40 m depth, where two steps within slope breccias are visible. Moreover, two low-velocity wedges (colluvial packages) are imaged in the near surface (5-20 m depth). These data support recent faulting consistently with surface geomorphic features. We interpret these fault structures as splays of the range bounding master fault. Comparison with commercial reflection profiles nearby reveals a great improvement in seismic imaging achieved by HR surveys, which allow a detailed seismostratigraphic analysis of the basin.

    Description: Il monitoraggio in continuo di parametri geochimici in aree di vulcanismo attivo è di primaria importanza per due ragioni principali: 1) prevedere l’evoluzione temporale dei sistemi vulcanici, in particolare l’inizio dell’attività eruttiva; 2) migliorare le conoscenze sui processi profondi che governano il degassamento. Ai fini della previsione di un evento eruttivo, il controllo in continuo del degassamento dal suolo si è mostrato notevolmente utile in diverse zone vulcaniche attive; anomalie nel degassamento della CO2 o di gas in tracce, per i quali la CO2 agisce come carrier (i.e. Rn and He), sono stati osservati prima e/o durante episodi di “unrest” in diversi vulcani (i.e. Etna, Stromboli, Vulcano, Campi Flegrei, Allard et al.,1991; Badalamenti et al., 1988, 1991a, 1991b; Baubron et al.,1990; Carapezza et al.,1990; Chiodini 1996; Lombardi et al.,1984; Lombardi and Nappi, 1986). E’ stato inoltre accertato che la quantità di CO2 rilasciata come emanazione diffusa da un suolo vulcanico è più elevata di quella emessa dalle manifestazioni fumaroliche. In alcuni casi questa quantità è confrontabile con i gas emessi da plumes di vulcani in eruzione (Allard et al.,1991; Baubron,1990; Baubron et al.,1991; Chiodini, 1996; Chiodini et al., 2000). Il principale scopo del monitoraggio, indipendentemente da fini scientifici o di sorveglianza, è di misurare ed interpretare il segnale che arriva dal profondo. Sfortunatamente, la maggior parte delle misure registrate può essere influenzata da fattori esterni. E’ stato empiricamente osservato, infatti, che la concentrazione di gas nel suolo, è legata ai fattori ambientali quali pioggia, pressione barometrica, temperatura e umidità del suolo e dell’aria, intensità e direzione del vento (Alm et al.,1999; Hinkle 1986,1994; Reimer 1980). Un recente lavoro di J.D. Rogie et al., ha messo in evidenza che anche il flusso di CO2 dal suolo dipende dai fattori atmosferici, in particolare, per 4 l’area di Mammoth Mountain, dalla pressione atmosferica e dall’intensità del vento (Rogie J.D. et al., 2001). Di conseguenza, per poter usare proficuamente l’informazione contenuta nei dati registrati, è necessario trovare la relazione tra i fattori esterni ed il flusso, quantificare e quindi rimuovere il “disturbo”. Oggetto del presente rapporto è l’esposizione dei risultati registrati negli ultimi due anni dalle Stazioni per l’Acquisizione di Parametri Geochimici (SAPG) che sono installate ai Campi Flegrei ed al Vesuvio. Le SAPG misurano il flusso di CO2 (jCO2 ) dal suolo e, contemporaneamente, alcuni parametri ambientali che possono avere influenza sul processo di degassamento. Sarà quindi esposta la trattazione matematico-statistica dei dati che ha lo scopo di quantificare ed eliminare l’aliquota di segnale imputabile a tali fattori esterni.

    Description: A global database of gas composition and methane stable isotopes of 143 terrestrial mud volcanoes from 12 countries and 60 seeps independent from mud volcanism from eight countries, was compiled and examined in order to provide the first worldwide statistics on the origin of methane seeping at the earth’s surface. Sixteen seep data were coupled with their associated subsurface reservoirs. The surface seepage data indicate that at least 76% of the mud volcanoes release thermogenic gas, with only 4% biogenic and 20% with mixed character. The average (201 data) of methane concentration and methane carbon isotope ratios (δ to the power of 13 C1) of mud volcanoes are 90% v/v and -46.4‰, respectively. The other types of seeps, which are independent from mud volcanism, have an average δ to the power of 13 C1 value that is slightly higher (-42.9‰). Gases from mud volcanoes are generally lighter (more methane, less ethane and propane) than their associated reservoir gases, suggesting a molecular fractionation during advective fluid migration. Other types of seeps, especially "dry" seeps, maintain the reservoir C1/(C2 + C3) "Bernard" ratio. Mud volcanoes behave like a "natural refinery" and the origin of gas more isotopically enriched than -50% and with C1/(C2 + C3) 〉500 should be attributed to a thermogenic source, rather than partial oxidation of biogenic gas. Some data that appear biogenic in the "Bernard diagram" can be explained by molecular fractionation of mixed gas. Consequently, the "Bernard" parameter may be misleading when applied to mud volcanoes since it does not always reflect the original gas composition. The mechanisms of the molecular advective segregation should be studied quantitatively by specific models and experiments.

    Description: Current emission inventories require an additional "unknown" source to balance the global atmospheric budgets of ethane (C2H6). Here, we provide evidence that a substantial part of the missing source can be attributed to natural gas seepage from petroliferous, geothermal, and volcanic areas. Such geologic sources also inject propane (C3H8) into the atmosphere. The analysis of a large data set of methane (CH4), ethane, and propane concentrations in surface gas emissions of 238 sites from different geographic and geologic areas, coupled with published estimates of geomethane emissions, suggests that Earth's degassing accounts for at least 17% and 10% of total ethane and propane emissions, respectively.

    Description: The oil- and gas-rich West Siberian Basin is underlain by a layer of flood basalts of late Permian-Triassic age that are coeval with the Siberian traps. The extent and thickness of the basalts is unknown, but knowing their thickness is important for discussions on the end- Permian mass extinction because basalt volume constrains estimates of emitted volatiles. We have used GRACE satellite and terrestrial gravity data to study the structure of the crust and basalt distribution. Published seismic sections are used to constrain the sediment isopachs and to estimate a depth-density function. We use published models of crustal thickness and basement depth to reduce the observed gravity field to the basement level. The resulting 3D density model gives information on density anomalies in the lower crust and upper mantle and on the basalt thickness. We identify several rift-graben structures which are presumably filled with basalt. The lower crust below the West Siberian Basin shows considerable density variations and these variations allow the region to be divided into four major blocks. The eastern part of the basin, towards the Siberian platform, shows an arch-shaped density increase in the lower crust that is accompanied by a linear high-density anomaly at shallower depths. Our work demonstrates the way in which the GRACE-gravity field can be applied to map geological structures like buried rifts and large basins. The same techniques can be used for other large, remote basins such as those in cratonic South America.

    Description: Continuous data acquisition, now frequent in many seismic networks, comes with the problem of accumulating huge data masses. In the context of the needs of CTBTO reliability and quality of data acquisition is a crucial issue. Severe malfunctions of the system (such as power failure, system hang-up, etc) can be easily detected, as these show up in absent data or zeroes in the transmitted data packages. Other problems, not so evident but nonetheless seriously affecting data availability, arise when data transmission is disturbed to some degree, causing disruptions which may easily escape the attention of the operators. For the station VAE we have set up a number of diagnostic tools for the identification of such problems. One of them is the analysis of the arrival times of data packages, which are expected to be ordered to a high degree. Others exploit concepts of continuous representation of the frequency content of the signals, such as short time FFT or wavelet transforms. With the latter it is possible to effectively visualize large time windows and to identify critical frames which may need further inspection. The concepts of the diagnostics outlined here has proven to be useful both for trouble shooting purposes as well as the configuration of parameters governing the data acquisition.

    Description: A remote sensing approach permits for the first time the derivation of a map of the carbon dioxide concentration in a volcanic plume. The airborne imaging remote sensing overcomes the typical difficulties associated with the ground measurements and permits rapid and large views of the volcanic processes together with the measurements of volatile components exolving from craters. Hyperspectral images in the infrared range (1900–2100 nm), where carbon dioxide absorption lines are present, have been used. These images were acquired during an airborne campaign by the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) over the Pu`u` O`o Vent situated at the Kilauea East Rift zone, Hawaii. Using a radiative transfer model to simulate the measured up-welling spectral radiance and by applying the newly developed mapping technique, the carbon dioxide concentration map of the Pu`u` O`o Vent plume were obtained. The carbon dioxide integrated flux rate were calculated and a mean value of 396±138 t d−1 was obtained. This result is in agreement, within the measurements errors, with those of the ground measurements taken during the airborne campaign.

    Description: Since the early 90s it was shown that Probability Distribution Functions (PDFs) of small scale differences (fluctuations) of several quantities in space plasmas display significant departures from Gaussianity. The non-Gaussian shape of PDFs was ascribed to intermittency and discussed in the framework of intermittent MHD turbulence. Here, we put the attention to the PDF of magnetic field intensity instead of its differences showing how the PDF of such quantity in a quiet solar wind can be related with the occurrence of heterogeneity. In detail, we derive the shape of the PDFs by simple statistical considerations based on the concept of subordination in probability theory. An interpretation and a discussion in terms of existing coherent magnetic structures in a mechanical near-equilibrium state are also presented.

    Description: Starting from 2004, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) set up a dense GPS network, called RING (Rete Integrata Nazionale GPS) in Italy in order to improve the knowledge of the geodynamics and tectonic processes. Due to the complexity of the tectonic behaviour in the area, the INGV also arranged the data analysis of all the permanent sites available in the Italian region. We will present time series and velocity fields obtained with two different processing software (GAMIT and BERNESE), analyzing the complete data set from 1998 to 2008 of over 300 sites. The processing is performed adopting a distributed session approach, with more than 10 clusters, sharing common stations, each of them consisting of about 40 stations. Daily loosely constrained solutions are routinely produced for each cluster and the velocity fields are obtained by stacking the daily normal equations rigorously. Residuals and differences between the two solutions will be presented and discussed. The comparison of the two geodetic solutions is an important tool to validate the results and to isolate systematic errors induced by the analysts and it is the first step to obtain a consensus solution of the Italian region.

    Description: The Anagni intra-appennine basin is specially rich in palaeontological and archaeological sites, spanning between middle Villafranchian and upper Pleistocene. The Italian Insitute of Human Palaeontology has carried out researches in this region in the last thirty years. At Costa San Giacomo middle Villafranchian yellow sands contain Mastodon arvernensis and Elephas meridionalis. At Colle Marino, a travertine layer and lime-clay contains mode 1 lithic industry, below any volcanic layers whose lower limit is 700 Ky old. Excavations have been restarted at Fontana Ranuccio, a 458 Ky Acheulean site with rich mammalian fauna (Elephas antiquus, Ursus deningeri, Bos primigenius, Dama clactoniana, Equus mosbachensis), a remarkable bone industry and 4 human teeth. Drillings, for about 40 m, have identified Matuyama-Brunhes limit 23 m under the main volcanic pyroclastite, in a thick limnic clay layer.
