Description: In this work, we analyse continuous measurements of microseisms to assess the reliability of the fundamental resonance frequency estimated by means of the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratio within the 0.1–1 Hz frequency range, using short-period sensors (natural period of 1 s). We apply the H/V technique to recordings of stations installed in two alluvial basins with different sedimentary cover thicknesses—the Lower Rhine Embayment (Germany) and the Gubbio Plain (Central Italy). The spectral ratios are estimated over the time–frequency domain, and we discuss the reliability of the results considering both the variability of the microseism activity and the amplitude of the instrumental noise. We show that microseisms measured by short period sensors allow the retrieval of fundamental resonance frequencies greater than about 0.1–0.2 Hz, with this lower frequency bound depending on the relative amplitude of themicroseism signal and the self-noise of the instruments. In particular,we show an examplewhere the considered short-period sensor is connected to instruments characterized by an instrumental noise level which allows detecting only fundamental frequencies greater than about 0.4 Hz. Since the frequency at which the peak of the H/V spectral ratio is biased depends upon the seismic signal-to-instrument noise ratio, the power spectral amplitude of instrumental self-noise should be always considered when interpreting the frequency of the peak as the fundamental resonance frequency of the investigated site.

Description: Geochemical investigations have shown that there is a considerable inflow of gas into both crater lakes of Monticchio, Southern Italy. These lakes are located in two maars that formed 140 000 years ago during Mt. Vulture volcano s last eruptive activity. Isotopic analyses suggest that CO2 and helium are of magmatic origin; the latter displays 3He ⁄ 4He isotope ratios similar to those measured in olivines of the maar ejecta. In spite of the fact that the amount of dissolved gases in the water is less than that found in Lake Nyos (Cameroon), both the results obtained and the historical reports studied indicate that these crater lakes could be highly hazardous sites, even though they are located in a region currently considered inactive. This could be of special significance in very popular tourist areas such as the Monticchio lakes, which are visited by about 30 000 people throughout the summer, for the most part on Sundays.

Description: On 2009 April 6, the Central Apennines were hit by an Mw = 6.3 earthquake. The region had been shaken since 2008 October by seismic activity that culminated in two foreshocks with Mw 〉 4, 1 week and a few hours before the main shock. We computed seismic moment tensors for 26 events with Mw between 3.9 and 6.3, using the Regional Centroid Moment Tensor (RCMT) scheme. Most of these source parameters have been computed within 1 hr after the earthquake and rapidly revised successively. The focal mechanisms are all extensional, with a variable and sometimes significant strike-slip component. This geometry agrees with the NE–SW extensional deformation of the Apennines, known from previous seismic and geodetic observations. Events group into three clusters. Those located in the southern area have larger centroid depths and a wider distribution of T-axis directions. These differences suggest that towards south a different fault systemwas activated with respect to the SW-dipping normal faults beneath L’Aquila and more to the north.

Description: The strong motion data of 2009 April 6 L’Aquila (Central Italy) earthquake (Mw = 6.3) and of 12 aftershocks (4.1 ≤ Mw ≤ 5.6) recorded by 56 stations of the Italian strong motion network are spectrally analysed to estimate the source parameters, the seismic attenuation, and the site amplification effects. The obtained source spectra for S wave have stress drop values ranging from 2.4 to 16.8 MPa, being the stress drop of the main shock equal to 9.2 MPa. The spectral curves describing the attenuation with distance show the presence of shoulders and bumps, mainly around 50 and 150 km, as consequence of significant reflected and refracted arrivals from crustal interfaces. The attenuation in the first 50 km is well described by a quality factor equal to Q( f ) = 59 f 0.56 obtained by fixing the geometrical spreading exponent to 1. Finally, the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio provides unreliable estimates of local site effects for those stations showing large amplifications over the vertical component of motion.

Description: Massively parallel pyrosequencing of hypervariable regions from small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) genes can sample a microbial community two or three orders of magnitude more deeply per dollar and per hour than capillary sequencing of full-length SSU rRNA. As with full-length rRNA surveys, each sequence read is a tag surrogate for a single microbe. However, rather than assigning taxonomy by creating gene trees de novo that include all experimental sequences and certain reference taxa, we compare the hypervariable region tags to an extensive database of rRNA sequences and assign taxonomy based on the best match in a Global Alignment for Sequence Taxonomy (GAST) process. The resulting taxonomic census provides information on both composition and diversity of the microbial community. To determine the effectiveness of using only hypervariable region tags for assessing microbial community membership, we compared the taxonomy assigned to the V3 and V6 hypervariable regions with the taxonomy assigned to full-length SSU rRNA sequences isolated from both the human gut and a deep-sea hydrothermal vent. The hypervariable region tags and full-length rRNA sequences provided equivalent taxonomy and measures of relative abundance of microbial communities, even for tags up to 15% divergent from their nearest reference match. The greater sampling depth per dollar afforded by massively parallel pyrosequencing reveals many more members of the “rare biosphere” than does capillary sequencing of the full-length gene. In addition, tag sequencing eliminates cloning bias and the sequences are short enough to be completely sequenced in a single read, maximizing the number of organisms sampled in a run while minimizing chimera formation. This technique allows the cost-effective exploration of changes in microbial community structure, including the rare biosphere, over space and time and can be applied immediately to initiatives, such as the Human Microbiome Project.

Description: Since the Giardia lamblia cyst wall is necessary for survival in the environment and host infection, we tested the hypothesis that it contains proteins other than the three known cyst wall proteins. Serial analysis of gene expression during growth and encystation revealed a gene, “HCNCp” (High Cysteine Non-variant Cyst protein), that was upregulated late in encystation, and that resembled the classic Giardia variable surface proteins (VSPs) that cover the trophozoite plasmalemma. HCNCp is 13.9% cysteine, with many “CxxC” tetrapeptide motifs and a transmembrane sequence near the C-terminus. However, HCNCp has multiple “CxC” motifs rarely found in VSPs, and does not localize to the trophozoite plasmalemma. Moreover, the HCNCp C-terminus differed from the canonical VSP signature. Full-length epitope-tagged HCNCp expressed under its own promoter was upregulated during encystation with highest expression in cysts, including 42 and 21 kDa C-terminal fragments. Tagged HCNCp targeted to the nuclear envelope in trophozoites, and co-localized with cyst proteins to encystation-specific secretory vesicles during encystation. HCNCp defined a novel trafficking pathway as it localized to the wall and body of cysts, while the cyst proteins were exclusively in the wall. Unlike VSPs, HCNCp is expressed in at least five giardial strains and four WB subclones expressing different VSPs. Bioinformatics identified 60 additional large high cysteine membrane proteins (HCMp) containing ≥20 CxxC/CxC's lacking the VSP-specific C-terminal CRGKA. HCMp were absent or rare in other model or parasite genomes, except for Tetrahymena thermophila with 30. MEME analysis classified the 61 gHCMp genes into nine groups with similar internal motifs. Our data suggest that HCNCp is a novel invariant cyst protein belonging to a new HCMp family that is abundant in the Giardia genome. HCNCp and the other HCMp provide a rich source for developing parasite-specific diagnostic reagents, vaccine candidates, and subjects for further research into Giardia biology.

Description: Cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs) are fast biological motors that serve to enhance the vibration of the organ of Corti and increase the sensitivity of the inner ear to sound. Exactly how OHCs produce useful mechanical power at auditory frequencies, given their intrinsic biophysical properties, has been a subject of considerable debate. To address this we formulated a mathematical model of the OHC based on first principles and analyzed the power conversion efficiency in the frequency domain. The model includes a mixture-composite constitutive model of the active lateral wall and spatially distributed electro-mechanical fields. The analysis predicts that: 1) the peak power efficiency is likely to be tuned to a specific frequency, dependent upon OHC length, and this tuning may contribute to the place principle and frequency selectivity in the cochlea; 2) the OHC power output can be detuned and attenuated by increasing the basal conductance of the cell, a parameter likely controlled by the brain via the efferent system; and 3) power output efficiency is limited by mechanical properties of the load, thus suggesting that impedance of the organ of Corti may be matched regionally to the OHC. The high power efficiency, tuning, and efferent control of outer hair cells are the direct result of biophysical properties of the cells, thus providing the physical basis for the remarkable sensitivity and selectivity of hearing.

Description: Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most common microsporidian associated with human disease, particularly in the immunocompromised population. In the setting of HIV infection, it is associated with diarrhea and wasting syndrome. Like all microsporidia, E. bieneusi is an obligate, intracellular parasite, but unlike others, it is in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm. Studies of E. bieneusi have been greatly limited due to the absence of genomic data and lack of a robust cultivation system. Here, we present the first large-scale genomic dataset for E. bieneusi. Approximately 3.86 Mb of unique sequence was generated by paired end Sanger sequencing, representing about 64% of the estimated 6 Mb genome. A total of 3,804 genes were identified in E. bieneusi, of which 1,702 encode proteins with assigned functions. Of these, 653 are homologs of Encephalitozoon cuniculi proteins. Only one E. bieneusi protein with assigned function had no E. cuniculi homolog. The shared proteins were, in general, evenly distributed among the functional categories, with the exception of a dearth of genes encoding proteins associated with pathways for fatty acid and core carbon metabolism. Short intergenic regions, high gene density, and shortened protein-coding sequences were observed in the E. bieneusi genome, all traits consistent with genomic compaction. Our findings suggest that E. bieneusi is a likely model for extreme genome reduction and host dependence.

Description: The intestinal microbiota is essential to human health, with effects on nutrition, metabolism, pathogen resistance, and other processes. Antibiotics may disrupt these interactions and cause acute disease, as well as contribute to chronic health problems, although technical challenges have hampered research on this front. Several recent studies have characterized uncultured and complex microbial communities by applying a new, massively parallel technology to obtain hundreds of thousands of sequences of a specific variable region within the small subunit rRNA gene. These shorter sequences provide an indication of diversity. We used this technique to track changes in the intestinal microbiota of three healthy humans before and after treatment with the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, with high sensitivity and resolution, and without sacrificing breadth of coverage. Consistent with previous results, we found that the microbiota of these individuals was similar at the genus level, but interindividual differences were evident at finer scales. Ciprofloxacin reduced the diversity of the intestinal microbiota, with significant effects on about one-third of the bacterial taxa. Despite this pervasive disturbance, the membership of the communities had largely returned to the pretreatment state within 4 weeks.

Description / Table of Contents: Comparing Exposure Tests on the Corrosion Resistance of Passivated Galvanic zinc coatingsThe results of three years exposure tests on galvanic zinc coatings passivated by 15 different methods are given. The experiments were carried out under different conditions of climate: industry, urban, country and sea climate. There were big differences between the differently passivated coatings though generally a considerable increase of the corrosion resistance could be observed. The most effectfully passivating methods are named. Further result is that there is no good agreement between exposure and accelerated tests. The results show that the most intensive corrosion takes place in industrial climate and decreases in the order urban sea and country climate. It should be mentioned that fairly no dust will be deposited on some chromate coatings. Some coatings remained glittering for longer times, open, till the basic metal was corroded. A comparison of the resistances to corrosion of the differently passivated zinc coatings is given.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of Steel Pipes in Refinary Equipment by Sulfur Rich Crude OilThe crude oil of Nagylengyel contains five and six membered naphtene rings which are fused partly and heterocyclic compounds with sulfur, nitrogen resp. vanadium. The products of thermal decomposition of the crude oil and the overheated water vapor which is added to lower the partial pressure of the oil vapor attack the iron parts of the refinery severely. According to chemical and x-ray investigations the corrosion processes cause the formation of metal sulfides and sulfates as well as oxides of various degrees of oxidation. The corrosion products show differing structures according to the duration of corrosion. After some months there arc several plain covers of rust. After two years a peculiar structure of several layers appears which looks like finger prints. Under the cover the basic metal seems to be ribbed as by etching. The form of this noteworthy corrosion may be discerned by diffusion effects.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the Corrosion of Pressure Pipes and on the Protective MeasuresThe article presents a discussion of the general principles of galvanic cells as they cause many initial corrosion processes. This allows to understand easily the formation of rust on pipes in tunnels. The author gives a short summery of the behavior of different metal parts of a pipeline in a gallery under the influence of percolating water as well as of constant modifications of the conditions of temperature and airation.Furthermore some protective measures are described which were found to be suitable. Finally the properties of a protective coating which consists of several covers of paint, requested to guarrantee durable protection, are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Importance of the Physical Properties of the Soil in Regard to the Mechanisms of the Reactions of Iron in SoilsAmong various factors controlling the velocity of the corrosion of iron in soils, as there are the soil water, the soil air, the pH-value and the electric resistance of the soil, the adhesive power of the soil to water is the most important one. The active and Passive states of iron in soil can be discerned from the theories of soil physicsBy means of model tests with glass balls of different sizes all kinds of contact corrosion can be explained. In a system unsaturated with water pitting might take place. A more uniform and weaker erosion is noticed in saturated soils.Basing on these results the experimental results of the American Bureau of Standards on the velocity of the corrosion of iron in 47 soils in the USA are represented as dependant of the average annual amount of rain.

Description / Table of Contents: The Corrosion of the Tin Plate Container in Canning IndustryA large number of variables (steel, tin coating, surface treatments, can, content) play a role in the corrosion of the tin plate cans; thence its many aspects. The author treats deals special effects of corrosion on the inside and the outside of cans such as sulfide staining briefly. The usual effects of corrosion are discussed in detail: they are characterised by the tin-iron couple, in which tin is the anode (in unlacquered cans). The thickness and the porosity of the tin coating play a minor role while the type and characteristics of the steel, the presence of cathodic de-polarizers (like atmospheric oxygen), and the storage temperature, are important factors Lacquering increases corrosion by reducing the surface of the protective anode. The time dependance of the potentials of tin and steel in a couple, and of the output of the cell, seem to be the best means of studying the influences of the various factors; the most recent research is in this direction. So far, however, no laboratory test can replace practical tests.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Importance of the Hydrate of Lime in Cement Mortar an Concrete against Aggression and of its Resistant Setting by Chemical Reactions during Hydration1The evaluation and interpretation of analytic and physical long term experiments with concretes made of Portland and blast furnace cements which were stored in aggressive agents, shows that the results agree to the theory of cements of the author. On this basis the hydration and cementation processes in the mortar beds as well as the causes and the mechanism of the corrosion of concrete are discerned. As the results of several testing methods and of different evaluation principles are agreeing, theoretically, the experimental results are of general and principle importance.2By means of a chemical reation a resistant setting of the hydrate of lime in the liquid phase during hydration was made possible. The so caused inhibition of the primary aggression allowed to increase the resistance of concretes of standard cements to a level never achieved before.

Description / Table of Contents: Documentation and Protection against Corrosion by PaintsThe protection against corrosion by painsts plays an important part in the range of protective methode available.Modern paints differ considerably from those used thirty or even ten years ago.Successive developments require continuous testing. The recording and evaluation of the results of short-term tests in the laboratory, of weathering tests and practical applications are usually unsatisfactory.A significant documentation would enable a successful comparison and interpretation of results to be given. Thus, some directions on how to prepare a documentation are given.Besides the standard DIN 53210 “Determination of the Degree of Rusting” there is a draft on the determination of the quality of a paint coat. Results are collected in card index files.

Description / Table of Contents: Application of Electro-Chemical Measurements to Find the Causes of CorrosionElectro-chemical investigations of materials under operating conditions enable the causes of corrosion damage to be ascertained.Current density voltage curves plotted on half logarithmic paper give information on the kind and the amount of the corrosion currents. There cases which could be cleared up by electro-chemical investigations are discussed. In the first case, the results show that the sensitivity of a steel section depends much more on its chemical composition than on peripheral segregation. The second case demonstrates that technical phosphoric acid weakens the passivation of V4A steel and conditions potentials at which pitting might occur if the surface is not clean. Finally the influence of atmospheric oxygen upon the corrosion current is discussed in the light of electro-chemical investigations. Intakes of air at a leaky stuffing box are considered to have caused the corrosion of a centrifugal pump.

Description / Table of Contents: Glossy and Thick Rhodium CoatingsRhodium has been used for twenty years to prevent the tarnishing of silver goods and silver jewellery. Today, Rhodium finds its applications in engineering too. The 'decorative' coatings are glossy but only 1 micron thick. The 'technological' coatings of thicknesses varying between 2 and 25 microns, are always dull. However, for certain purposes it is desirable to obtain both thick and glossy Rhodium coatings. The author, therefore, examines the effects of various additives: cetain metal salts delay the disappearance of the gloss with a coating thickness of up to 2 microns, but the true gloss-producing agents appear to be active only on the surface. A number of such surfaceactive materials (anion-active, cathion-active and non-ionising) were investigated. Some of these produce glossy coatings with a thickness of far more than 10 microns. In addition, the porosity of the coat and its surface tesion is greatly reduced, the porosity of the coat and its surface tension is greatly reduced and thereby the corrosion resistance of the Rhodium is significantly improved. However, results of these experiments are not entirely consistent and work in this field continues.

Description / Table of Contents: Causes of Stress Corrosion Cracking in Non-ferrous Metals and SteelsThe basic problems of stress corrosion are, on the one hand, the extreme localisation of the attack on the grain boundaries or on areas within the crystals; on the other hand the effect to tensile strees. The assumption that the tensile stress causes the localisation of the attack is not borne out. It is shown that a localised attack on the intergranular boundaries takes place even in homogeneous solid solution, without any tensile stress. This is traced to the increased reactivity of obtuse-angled grain boundaries due to solid solution formation, which can be proved experimentally. This solid solution effect, however, with a maximum of 50 At does not cause intercrystalline i. e. stress corrosion under the action of chemically corrosive agents alone; but only if an electrochemical process takes place at the same time. It is shown that such a porcess is possible even is homogeneous solid solution. As regards the part played by tensile stress, it is shown that its effect consists only of producing plastic deformation for, in the course of such deformation, i. e: in statu deformandi, the activity of a solid solution is increased considerably; for this, too, experimental proofs are given.

Description / Table of Contents: Galvanic Corrosion of Cast Iron and Brass Ms 60 in Acids, in the Absence and Pressence of Inhibitors II.Experiments show that the galvanic corrosion process is largely independent of corrosion caused by local cells. Inhibitors suppress only the effect of the local cells. The amount of galvanic corrosion in acid solutions is usually less than 1% of the total corrosion. The proportion of galvanic corrosion is increased only by the addition in inhibitors, because the corrosion caused by local cells is then supressed much more than the galvanic corrosion. Mixtures of inhibitors give greater protection than single substances. The nature of the charge on the inhibitor ions has little influence, because inhibition occurs both at the anode and at the cathode of the galvanic couple irrespective of the charge on the inhibitor ions. The effects observed can be explained by the theory which postulates an insulating pin-cushion inhibitor film. The results again support the inhibitor theory of W. Machu.

Description / Table of Contents: Experiences with Amine Cured Epoxy Paints in industry and ShippingAmine cured epoxy paints are of rapidly growing importance for the corrosion protection of installations in refineries and chemical plants, storage tanks and sea-going tankers. Results of extensive practical trials and regular applications are shown and indicate successful use for protection against oil products, sea water, caustic solutions and various acids and acidic compounds. The influence of surface preparation is large and one of the remaining problems is to find an effective and cheap method of preparation. Further work is aimed at reducing the number of coats. In marine applications an important organizational problem has arisen when planing the coating work within the building schedule of the ship.

Description / Table of Contents: Ceramic coatings for Protection of Metals at High TemperaturesCeramic coatings are heat resisting coverings on metals to avert corrosion at high temperatures. There are high temperature-resistant enamals, refractory paints and flame sprayed, high melting oxides and cermets. In several countries high temperature enamals have gained increasing importance. They protect unalloyed steel up to 700° C and alloyed steel up to 1000° C against oxidation and intergranular corrosion. Thus, the resistance to creep stress and the durability are improved. High fireproof covers of Al2O3, ZrO2, TiO2, mullite and procelain or a Ni MgO cermet are sprayed in molten state by means of a flame spray gun. Ceramic coatings are applied for use in aviation, jet techniques, gas turbines and atomic reactors.

Description / Table of Contents: Protection against Corrosion by sprayed Zinc and Aluminium CoatingsUsed since 1922, metal spraying now has wide applications especially in the protection of steels against corrosion. Low-melting metals such as zinc and aluminium are mainly used. Both these metals may be applied by the powder as well as by the wire method. The physical properties of coatings produced by these two methods are different. Considering hitherto gained experience, the properties of the sprayed zinc and aluminium coatings are discussed in detail. The result is that sprayed coatings of aluminium and zinc afford effective protection of mild steel in water and in air. Besides giving cathodic protection, a protective effect may be obtained by blocking the pores of the metal coating by the corrosion products. In the case of aluminium the absorbing, amphothere hydroxide film on the metal surface may be involved in chemical reactions. In selecting the protective metal one must consider that sprayed aluminium is much more reactive than massive aluminium while there is no difference with zinc.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of High Alloy Steels by Nitric AcidThe corrosion diagrams and iso corrosion lines of temperable and nontemperable chrome steels, chrome-nickel steels and some others containing further alloy constituents in nitric acid solutions up to 67% are determined at all temperatures up to their boiling points, under atmospheric pressure. The resistance to corrosion of the different types of steel under definite conditions can be derived from these curves.Parts of the corrosion data obtained were used to study the influence of different alloy constituents by means of a graphic method. To achieve passivatation the minimum content of chrome increases with rising concentration of nitric acid and with rising content of carbon in the alloy. Exceeding additions of chrome exert an inhibiting influence too. Manganese is very effective especially in alloys containing up to 0.7 %. Ni and Cu and Si in particular cause increasing aggression. Mo does not influence corrosion, except in boiling acid solutions of 67% where corrosion is decreases at Mo contents up to 2%. At higher contents the corrosive attack rises.Over a wide range of concentrations corrosion tests were carried out in boiling solutions of diluted acids. With chrome steels maximum aggression occurred in the range of 0.1-1 n acid solutions if the content of chrome, with deduction of the amount of chrome necessary to form chrome iron carbides, was lower than 14.5%. The corrosion peaks are usually higher than the data of the attack of a 1.0 n nitric acid. Austenitic steels do not show behaviour like this except for 18/8 Cr/Ni automate steel which contains some sulphur. Its corrosion peak is in the range of 0.1-1.0n. In higher concentrated acids it corrodes much more than the usual 18/8 Cr/Ni steels.

Description / Table of Contents: Electro-Chemical investigations on the Mechanism of inhibition by Organic CompoundsThe modifications of stationary current density-voltage curves of the cathodic deposition of hydrogen in hydrochloric acid solutions, containing organic inhibitors, bring to light essential facts of the mechanism of cathodic inhibition, as well as of anodic if the rest potentials are considered. Three significant sections of the current density-voltage curves are examined. An anorganic inhibitor causes a displacement of the sections and an alterations of the rest potential in a characterisitc way: 1. The beginning of the curve, being straight in absence of inhibitors, is shortened. The rest potential becomes more positive. Both the effects may be deduced from the anodic activity of chemisorbed inhibitors. 2. The Tafel range falls to negative voltages with or without an increasing slope of the curve because of the higher activation polarization (partly accompanied by rising concentration polarization). 3. The apparent limiting current is decreased partly because of the coating on the metal of the cathode or because of a modification of the chemical composition of the diffusion film, (secondary reactions of inhibitors include a raise in pH value and in viscosity). The effects of inhibitors of different compositions are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Steels for Synthesis Gas and for HydrogenThe resistance of steel against corrosion by hydrogen depends above all on the stability of iron carbides. By means of theoretical conceptions on the influences of the alloy constituents on the properties of the steels, on the carbon linkage in steels and its stability at high temperatures a number of tungsten-titanium steels were investigated. A steel containing maximal 0,12 pct. of carbon, 0,4-0,6 pct. of titanium and 3-6 pct. of tungsten is recommended for use in synthesis gas and hydrogen atmospheres.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion and PassivityThe corrosion processes and the appearances of passivity of metallic materials are of electro chemical nature. Because of this relation the characteristic forms of the passivity of metals are discerned by means of potentiostatic current density-voltage curves. So, it is possible to show that the passive state is caused by very thin nonmetal layers which cover the metals all over. These layers arc characterized by certain properties of electric conductivity. The corrosion behavior of passivated metals is so governed by the chemical and electric properties of the layers and not by the basic metal. In this connection the conditions of formation and of decomposition, the semiconduktive properties, the reaction kinetic instability and the sensitivity of the layers to halogens are discussed as they are conditioning the passivity of all metals needing protection against corrosion.

Description / Table of Contents: Protection against Corrosion Seen from Another Point of ViewThe construction of modern cathodic protection installations for old supply pipe lines (water, gas) in densely populated as well as in industrial districts is meeting increasing difficulties. The number of the buried pipes makes it necessary to extend the protective installations. The plans are but impracticable because of space restrictions. Further difficulties are given by the legal interests of the landowners and the boards of roads, woods and countries. New constructions of settlements, roads and industrial plants request modification of old protective installations whose, protective effects are now decreased or even ridiculous. Considerable progress will be achieved if you succeed in preparing metal surfaces of better corrosive resistance and more effective protective covers at reasonable economic conditions. In this case the installations of cathodic protection would be of smaller dimensions and the difficulties would have been overcome.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the Inclination of passivated Chrome-Nickel-Steels to Intercrystalline Corrosion by means of a PotentiostateBy comparing current density  -  voltage curves of steels containing 5-8 pct. of chrome and of the alloy FeNi 36 in 1 n-sulfuric acid (fig. 1,2) we found that according to the degree of the decrease of chrome the passivation potential of grain boundaries is higher than that of its own, austenitic grains. Because of this, etching steel specimens at a voltage of -0,1 V against the saturated kalomel electrode, is a sensitive test to determine the inclination of steel to intercrystalline corrosion.Applying a potentiostate, it is possible to identify the presence of the α-Phase and δ-ferrit at suitable voltages as taken from table 1.
