Description / Table of Contents: Die Bestimmung der chemischen und physikalischen Eigenschaften von Geomaterialien bei Druck- und Temperaturbedingungen des Erdinneren ist ein wesentlicher Forschungsschwerpunkt der Geowissenschaften. Hochdruckexperimente in Kombination mit seismologischen Messungen haben in den letzten Jahrzehnten einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Modellierung des Erdaufbaus und der im Inneren ablaufenden Prozesse geleistet. Die Bewegung ganzer Kontinente, vulkanische Aktivitäten, Gebirgsbildung sowie das Abtauchen und Recycling von Gesteinen der Erdkruste werden durch dynamische Prozesse im Erdinneren angetrieben. Sichtbare Merkmale dieser plattentektonischen Prozesse sind z. B. die Konzentrationder Erdbebenan den Plattenrändern und die z. T. explosiven vulkanischen Aktivitäten. Wichtige Steuergrößen sind dabei geochemische Reaktionen sowie Transportprozesse im Erdinneren. Bei diesen Vorgängen scheinen wässrige Fluide, d. h. die Wechselwirkung zwischen den Fluiden und den Gesteinen, eine bedeutende Rolle zu spielen. Darüber hinaus sind die elastischen/plastischen Eigenschaften der Geomaterialienbei erhöhten Druck- und Tempebedingungen von entscheidender Bedeutung.

Description / Table of Contents: Global environmental change (GEC) represents an immediate and unprecedented threat to the food security of hundreds of millions of people, especially those who depend on small-scale agriculture for their livelihoods. As this book shows, at the same time, agriculture and related activities also contribute to GEC by, for example, intensifying greenhouse gas emissions and altering the land surface. Responses aimed at adapting to GEC may have negative consequences for food security, just as measures taken to increase food security may exacerbate GEC. The authors show that this complex and dynamic relationship between GEC and food security is also influenced by additional factors; food systems are heavily influenced by socioeconomic conditions, which in turn are affected by multiple processes such as macro-level economic policies, political conflicts and other important drivers. The book provides a major, accessible synthesis of the current state of knowledge and thinking on the relationships between GEC and food security.Most other books addressing the subject concentrate on the links between climate change and agricultural production, and do not extend to an analysis of the wider food system which underpins food security; this book addresses the broader issues, based on a novel food system concept and stressing the need for actions at a regional, rather than just an international or local, level. Mit ihren gewaltigen Wassermassen und Strömungen bestimmen sie maßgeblich in Wechselwirkung mit der Atmosphäre das Klima der Erde. Ohne die Meere wäre die Erdgeschichte ganz anders verlaufen. Selbst die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung Europas ist dem Wärmetransport des Nordatlantischen Strömungssystems zu verdanken. Seit Beginn der Industrialisierung verändert der Mensch durch den Verbrauch fossiler Energieträger die chemische Zusammensetzung der Atmosphäre und verstärkt damit den natürlichen Treibhauseffekt, was eine Erwärmung der unteren Atmosphäre und der Erdoberfläche einschließlich des oberen Ozeans zur Folge hat. Dies führt zur Schrumpfung der Fläche des arktischen Meereises, was die globale Erderwärmung weiter verstärkt, da sich die Erdalbedo verringert. Die Gletscher schmelzen. Das Schmelzwasser und die Ausdehnung des Meerwassers aufgrund der Erwärmung führen zum Meeresspiegelanstieg, der gefährliche Höhe erreichen wird, wenn Klimaschutz nicht konsequent betrieben wird. Description / Table of Contents: Even a cursory glance at any map of the Asia-Pacific region makes a striking impression: in addition to the large continental landmass the region encompasses a truly vast expanse of ocean, dispersed over which are thousands of islands. Many might say that it could not be a worse time to live in this region. In the past few years we have experienced not only a number of devastating tsunamis (Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Japan), but should not forget either the seemingly endless list of other natural hazards such as tropical cyclones and typhoons, volcanic eruptions, river floods and wildfires, amongst numerous others. This Special Publication represents an important collection of both conceptual and first-hand field investigations across the Asia-Pacific region. By highlighting some of the recent advances and emerging ideas in natural hazards research, the volume draws together these disparate lines of evidence into a clear regional focus.

Description / Table of Contents: The East Greenland sector of the Palaeogene-Recent North Atlantic Igneous Province is one of the Earth's largest and best exposed igneous manifestations, and it includes the Skaergaard intrusion, probably the most studied igneous body worldwide. This volume contains an introductory historical review, descriptions of the igneous activity and related mineralisation processes in the regions throughout its rifting, spreading, stabilisation and uplift history. Finally, the underlying, plate-tectonic mantle processes are discussed. The text is accompanied by an extensive reference list and an appendix with selected age data from several sources.

Description / Table of Contents: The Indian shield represents a vast repository of the Palaeoproterozoic geological record. Built over the four large amalgamated Archaean nuclei (Dharwar, Bastar, Singhbhum and Aravalli-Bundelkhand) the major and minor Palaeoproterozoic sedimentary basins and supracrustal sequences in India are comparable in scale, and perhaps also in development, to those of North America, Africa, Australia and Brazil. The deformation of these supracrustal sequences, attendant metamorphism and emplacement of plutonic bodies hold important clues to their connection with major orogenies. Research in these areas has led to investigations into global correlation, which in turn has had a direct bearing on refining models of Palaeoproterozoic supercontinent assembly and break-up. This book covers various aspects of regional geology as well as broader issues of the Indian Palaeoproterozoic geology and its global context. It is an outcome of the UNESCO-IGCP 509 Palaeoproterozoic Supercontinents and Global Evolution research project.
