    Notes: Abstract Highly purified plasma membranes were isolated by aqueous two-phase partitioning from rice (Oryza sativa) seedling roots. The effects of lanthanum chloride (LaCl3) on the activities of lipid peroxidation, the redox system and H+-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase of plasma membranes were studied. The lipid peroxidation of plasma membranes could be depressed by certain low concentrations of LaCl3 and enhanced by high concentrations of LaCl3, while the lipid peroxidation was also dependent on the plasma membrane protein and incubation time. The relative activity of O2 uptake of plasma membranes was inhibited by all tested LaCl3 concentrations. In contrast, the reduction rate of Fe(CN)6 3− by plasma membranes was stimulated below 40 μM of LaCl3, but was reduced above 60 μM of LaCl3. The relative activities of both H+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPase increased constantly from control to LaCl3 of concentration 60 μM where the activities of both enzymes were the maximum, but decreased remarkably at 80 μM LaCl3 concentrations various LaCl3 were added to culture solutions. In the other measurement case in which various LaCl3 concentrations were added directly to reaction medium and the plasma membrane vesicles only came from the control cultured rice seedling roots, the response of H+-ATPase activity to La3+ was similar to the response in culture solution. However, the La3+ concentration was only 20 μM when the activity of H+-ATPase was the maximum. In contrast to the case of LaCl3 addition to culture solution, Ca2+-ATPase activity was inhibited by all concentrations of La3+ which were added directly to the reaction medium. The above results revealed that REEs inhibited electron transfer from NADH to oxygen in plant plasma membranes, depressed the production of active oxygen radicals, and reduced the formation of lipid peroxides through plasma membrane lipid peroxidation. REEs ions also enhanced the H+ extrusion by both standard redox system and H+-ATPase in plasma membranes at certain concentrations. A possible role for the plant cell wall in REEs effects on plasma membranes was also suggested.

    Notes: Abstract This analysis is based on published measurements of nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from fertilized and unfertilized fields. Data was selected in order to evaluate the importance of factors that regulate N2O production, including soil conditions, type of crop, nitrogen (N) fertilizer type and soil and crop management. Reported N2O losses from anhydrous ammonia and organic N fertilizers or combinations of organic and synthetic N fertilizers are higher than those for other types of N fertilizer. However, the range of management and environmental conditions represented by the data set is inadequate for use in estimating emission factors for each fertilizer type. The data are appropriate for estimating the order of magnitude of emissions. The longer the period over which measurements are made, the higher the fertilizer-induced emission. Therefore, a simple equation to relate the total annual direct N2O−N emission (E) from fertilized fields to the N fertilizer applied (F), was based on the measurements covering periods of one year: E=1+1.25×F, with E and F in kg N ha-1 yr-1. This relationship is independent of the type of fertilizer. Although the above regression equation includes considerable uncertainty, it may be appropriate for global estimates.

    Notes: Abstract A model that simulates changes in mineral N in the soil and N uptake by crops has been adapted to require as little detailed information as possible so that it is useful as an aid to management. The adapted model, which was developed in the UK, was tested against data from six experiments on winter wheat in the Netherlands. It proved reasonably successful in simulating the amounts of mineral N found in the soil in early spring and the changes that resulted from applying small amounts of fertilizer N in February. It was much less successful in simulating the effects of later, larger applications of N, mainly because the mineral N measured in the soil did not seem to respond to these applications. The uptake of N by the crops and their production of dry matter were simulated very well in some cases and rather less so in others.

    Notes: Abstract Morphometric and isozymic analyses of adjacent cultivated and spontaneous populations of pearl millet in Niger revealed in the field a unique continuous distribution of phenotypes ranging from the most cultivated one to a typical cultivated × wild hybrid. The natural population was subdivided into a major wild group and a hybrid wild × cultivated group. Cultivated millet displayed an equilibrium state between recombined domesticated and wild genes. The natural population, in spite of a high rate of immigration by pollen from cultivated plants, retained its structure by apparently reproducing itself exclusively from the major wild group.

    Notes: Abstract Root growth and soil water content were measured in a field experiment with wheat subjected to two periods of water deficit. The first period was induced early in the season between the early vegetative stage (22 DAS) and late terminal spikelet (50 DAS), the second period at mid-season between terminal spikelet (42 DAS) and anthesis (74 DAS). Total root growth was reduced under water deficit by a reduction in the top 30 cm, while the root system continued to grow in the deeper soil profile between 30 and 60 cm. Shortly after rewatering, the growth pattern reverted to fastest root growth rates in the shallow soil layers. In relative terms, the total root system increased in relation to the above ground dry matter under water shortage. The early-, the mid-season water deficit treatments, and the control treatment had total root length of 27.4, 19.4 and 30.6 km m-2, respectively, about 2 wk before maturity. Evapotranspiration declined under water deficit, but water uptake in deeper layers increased. Water uptake per unit root length was reduced with water deficit and was still low shortly after rewatering. Remarkable was the increase in water uptake at 2–3 weeks after rewatering, both deficit treatments exceeded the control by almost 100%. This increase in water uptake followed the burst of new root growth in the upper regions of the soil. However, water uptake rates subsequently declined towards maturity, being between 0.15 L km-1 d-1 and 0.17 L km-1 d-1 for the early and mid-season water deficit treatments, slightly higher than the control, 0.12 L km-1 d-1. The results showed that the crop subjected to early water deficit could compensate for some of the reductions in root growth during subsequent rewatering, but the impact of the mid-season water deficit treatment was more severe and permanent.

    Notes: Abstract Phytotoxic effects of Iochroma australe extract and 4,7,20-oxowithanolides were examined in Petri dish bioassays at 10, 100, and 1000 ppm. The extract and the major constituent (17S,20R,22R)-4β,7β,20α-trihydroxy-1oxowitha-2,5,24-trienolide (2) reduced growth of the radicle of the weeds Sorghum halepense (Monoct.) and Chenopodium album (Dicot.). Neither the extract nor withanolides had significant effect on germination or radicle length of the commercial crop species Lactuca sativa. From our experimental data we conclude that the withanolides tested here are natural products with selective herbicidal activity against weed species.

    Notes: Abstract We examined numbers of plant species and individuals relative to land use in an agricultural settlement in the Brazilian Amazon. Land uses were forest, cropped after forest, fallows, cropped after fallow, and pasture. These corresponded roughly to farmers' land-use changes over time. Numbers of species and diversity indices were generally highest in forest, but we found quite similar values in older fallows as a result of both survival/re-establishment of forest species and emergence of plants not encountered in forest. The dominant species in fallows, however, were different from those in forest. Lands cropped using slash-and-burn maintained moderate numbers of species–both forest and non-forest. Trends in plant density (individuals per unit ground area) on cropped lands were mainly related to invasion of weedy species (increasing in time after slash-and-burn) and shifts in crop species (replacement of small-sized rice by larger-sized maize and cassava). Useful forest plants (e.g. for construction purposes, food and medicines) decreased with land conversion, although new species also appeared. The fewest species, tree species, and useful plants, and the greatest losses of the forest flora, were encountered in pastures. Consequently, conversion to pasture rather than slash-and-burn agriculture per se led to high biodiversity loss.
