    Description: This Bibliography of Aeronautics for 1932 covers the aeronautical literature published from January 1 to December 31, 1932. The first Bibliography of Aeronautics was published by the Smithsonian Institution as volume 55 of the Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections and covered the material published prior to June 30, 1909. Supplementary volumes of the Bibliography of Aeronautics for the subsequent years have been published by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The last preceding volume was for the calendar year 1931. As in the previous volumes, citations of the publications of all nations are included in the languages in which these publications originally appeared. The arrangement is in dictionary form with author and subject entry and one alphabetical arrangement. Detail in the matter of subject reference has been omitted on account of the cost of presentation, but an attempt has been made to give sufficient cross-reference for research in special lines.

    Results of Landing Tests of Kellett YG-1 Autogiro (A. C. R. 35-278) (1937)

    Description: Flight tests were made with a Kellett YG-1 autogiro to determine the relationship between the ground reaction and the vertical velocity at contact for landings of the flared and gliding three-point types. The data obtained are presented in the form of time histories of linear accelerations at the center of gravity resulting from the initial landing impact. In addition, the attitude angle and velocity of the autogiro at contact were measured. The landings were all mild as compared to those representative of airplanes tested in this manner, the maximum vertical velocity being 4.4 feet per second with a corresponding normal acceleration of 2.35 g.

    True Airspeed Measurement by Ionization-Tracer Technique (1952)

    Description: Ion bundles produced in a pulse-excited corona discharge are used as tracers with a radar-like pulse transit-time measuring instrument in order to provide a measurement of airspeed that is independent of all variables except time and distance. The resulting instrumentation need not project into the air stream and, therefore, will not cause any interference in supersonic flow. The instrument was tested at Mach numbers ranging from 0.3 to 3.8. Use of the proper instrumentation and technique results in accuracy of the order of 1 percent.

    Description: In considering the motion of the rocket, at each instant of time only the state of those material particles which a t that instant are within the control surface passing through the exterior surface of the body of the rocket and the exit section of the nozzle shall be included. In order t o obtain the equations of motion of the rocket, the following procedure is used. An arbitrary but fixed instant of time is considered. A fictitious solid body is denoted by S with mass m, which would be obtained if the rocket at the instant t solidified and ceased giving off particles. The solid body S will not be homogeneous; in some of its parts, it will have the density of a metal and in other parts the density of a gas, and so forth. It shall be assumed that the fictitious solid body S is invariably fixed to the body of the rocket and from the instant t onwards (instant of solidification) moves together with the rocket. The momentum of the body S shall be denoted by Q.

    Description: Three 1/5-scale models of the Hermes A-3A missile have been flown to determine the effect of rocket-motor operation on the drag corresponding to various altitude and Mach number combinations. The flights covered a Mach number range from 0.5 to 1.8, and ratios of jet-exit static pressure to free-stream static pressure from 0.8 to 1.8. The results indicate that the power-on drag of the missile should be the same as the power-off drag at Mach number 1.3 and slightly less than the power-off drag at Mach number 1.55.

    Description: Tests have been conducted in the N.A.C.A. full-scale wind tunnel to investigate the partial recovery of the heat energy which is apparently wasted in the cooling of aircraft engines. The results indicate that if the radiator is located in an expanded duct, a part of the energy lost in cooling is recovered; however, the energy recovery is not of practical importance up to airplane speeds of 400 miles per hour. Throttling of the duct flow occurs with heated radiators and must be considered in designing the duct outlets from data obtained with cold radiators in the ducts.

    Preliminary Tests of Blowers of Three Designs Operating in Conjunction with a Wing-Duct Cooling System for Radial Engines, Special Report (1939)

    Description: This paper is one of several dealing with methods intended to reduce the drag of present-day radial engine installations and improve the cooling at zero and low air speeds, The present paper describes model wind-tunnel tests of blowers of three designs tested in conjunction with a wing-nacelle combination. The principle of operation involved consists of drawing cooling air into ducts located in the wing root at the point of maximum slipstream velocity, passing the air through the engine baffles from rear to front, and exhausting the air through an annular slot located between the propeller and the engine with the aid of a blower mounted on the spinner. The test apparatus consisted essentially of a stub wing having a 5-foot chord and a 15-foot span, an engine nacelle of 20 inches diameter enclosing a 25-horsepower electric motor, and three blowers mounted on propeller spinners. Two of the blowers utilize centrifugal force while the other uses the lift from airfoils to force the air out radially through the exit slot. Maximum efficiencies of over 70 percent were obtained for the system as a whole. Pressures were measured over the entire flight range which were in excess of those necessary to cool present-day engines, The results indicated that blowers mounted on propeller spinners could be built sufficiently powerful and efficient to warrant their use as the only, or chief, means of forcing air through the cooling system, so that cooling would be independent of the speed of the airplane.

    Preliminary Tests of Nose- and Side- Entrance Blower Cooling Systems for Radial Engines, Special Report (1939)

    Description: Two cowling systems intended to reduce the drag and improve the low-speed cooling characteristics of conventional radial engine cowlings were tested in model form to determine the practicability of the methods. One cowling included a blower mounted on the rear face of a large propeller spinner which drew cooling air in through side entrance ducts located behind the equivalent engine orifice plate. The air was passed through the equivalent engine orifice plate from rear to front and out through a slot between the spinner and the engine plate. The blower produced substantially all the power necessary to circulate the cooling air in some cases, so the quantity of air flowing was independent of the air speed, Two types of blowers were used, a centrifugal type and one using airfoil blades which forced the air outward from the center of rotation. The other cowling was similar to the conventional N.A.C.A. cowling except for the addition of a large propeller spinner nose. The spinner was provided with a hole in the nose to admit cooling air and blower blades to increase the pressure for cooling at low speeds. The tests show that with both cowling types the basic drag of the nacelle was reduced substantially below that for the N.A.C.A. cowling by virtue of the better nose shape made possible by the spinner . The drag due to the side-entrance ducts was nearly zero when the openings were closed or when the blower was drawing in a certain quantity of air in proportion to the air speed. The drag increased, however, when air mas allowed to spill from the openings. The nose-entrance blower showed considerable promise as a cooling means although the blower tested was relatively inefficient, owing to the fact that the blower compartments evidently were expanded too rapidly under the conditions imposed. by the design.

    Full-Scale Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Wing-Cooling Ducts Effects of Propeller Slipstream, Special Report (1939)

    Description: The safety of remotely operated vehicles depends on the correctness of the distributed protocol that facilitates the communication between the vehicle and the operator. A failure in this communication can result in catastrophic loss of the vehicle. To complicate matters, the communication system may be required to satisfy several, possibly conflicting, requirements. The design of protocols is typically an informal process based on successive iterations of a prototype implementation. Yet distributed protocols are notoriously difficult to get correct using such informal techniques. We present a formal specification of the design of a distributed protocol intended for use in a remotely operated vehicle, which is built from the composition of several simpler protocols. We demonstrate proof strategies that allow us to prove properties of each component protocol individually while ensuring that the property is preserved in the composition forming the entire system. Given that designs are likely to evolve as additional requirements emerge, we show how we have automated most of the repetitive proof steps to enable verification of rapidly changing designs.

    Summary of Free-Flight Zero-Lift Drag Results from Tests of 1/5-Scale Models of the Convair YF-102 and F-102A Airplanes and Several Related Small Equivalent Bodies at Mach Numbers from 0.70 to 1.46 (1954)

    Description: One-fifth-scale rocket-propelled models of the Convair YF-102 and F-102A airplanes were tested to determine free-flight zero-lift drag coefficients through the transonic speed range at Reynolds numbers near those to be encountered by the full-scale airplane. Trim and duct characteristics were obtained along with measurements of total-, internal-, and base-drag coefficients. Additional zero-lift drag tests involved a series of small equivalent-body-of-revolution models which were launched to low supersonic speeds by means of a helium gun. The several small models tested corresponded to the following full-scale airplanes: basic, YF-102, 2-foot (full-scale) fuselage extension, F-102A, F-102A (relocated inlets), F-102A (faired nose), and F-102A (parabolic nose) . Equivalent-body models corresponding to the normal area distribution (derived for Mach number 1.0) of each of these airplane shapes were flown and, in addition, equivalent-body models designed to represent the YF-102 and F-102A airplanes at Mach number 1.2 were tested. External-drag coefficients obtained from the 115-scale tests ranged from 0.0094 to 0.0273 for the YF-102 model and from 0.0100 to 0.0255 for the F-102A model. Forebody external-pressure-drag coefficients (drag rise) at Mach number 1.05 of 0.0183 and 0.0134 were obtained from the 115-scale models of the YF-102 and F-102A, respectively, a 16-percent reduction for the F-102A model. Values of drag rise at Mach number 1.05 from the small equivalent-body tests were nearly the same for the basic, YF-102, and 2-foot-fuselage-extension airplane shapes. Equivalent-body tests of the YF-102 and F-102A shapes showed the latter to have about 25 percent less drag rise as compared with a 16-percent reduction illustrated by the 1/5-scale tests. Additional equivalent-body tests illustrating effects of modifications to the F-102A airplane shape shared that relocating the inlets on the fuselage or altering the nose shape to provide a smoother cross-sectional area progression reduced the drag rise by approximately 16 percent. Replacing a major portion of the nose of the F-102A equivalent-body model with one of parabolic shape resulted in about a 21-percent reduction in drag rise. The drag-rise data from the equivalent-body tests include base drag.

    Notes: Beim Schmelzen Cu-haltiger Stoffe mit Soda und Schwefel und Ausziehen der Schmelze mit Wasser können beträchtliche Mengen Cu mit in die Sulfosalzlösung gehen, besonders bei Gegenwart von viel Sn. Das gelöste Cu läßt sich aus der Sulfosalzlösung durch Zusätze von NaOH, Na2S und Na2SO3 oder weniger gut KCN zum größeren Teil wiederabscheiden, doch bleibt ein von Art und Menge der Begleitmetalle abhängiger Rest Cu in Lösung. Zuverlässiger ist die Trennung des gelösten Cu von As, Sb und Sn durch Wiederausfällung der Sulfide mit Säure und anschließende Behandlung mit einem Gemisch von NaOH, Na2S und Na2SO3. Aber auch diese Trennung ist nur auf ½-1 mg genau, da immer etwas Cu mit in Lösung geht.

Der Abbau von Na2B4O7·10H2O schlägt, wie durch tensimetrische Messungen und durch Entwässerungsversuche über Trockenmitteln erkannt, je nach Vorbehandlung der untersuchten Präparate zwei grundsätzlich verschiedene Wege ein: Ein zuvor auf etwa 50° angetempertes Zehnhydrat geht in scharf ausgeprägter Stufe (10 mm isobar bei 20°) reversibel in kristallines Fünfhydrat über  -  „stabiler Abbau“  - , und dessen weiteres Verhalten entspricht ganz dem des oberhalb 60° aus Lösung kristallisierenden Pentahydrates. Frisch umkristallisiertes, „ungeschmortes“ Zehnhydrat hingegen wird bei gleicher Temperatur unter Entwicklung eines sehr viel kleineren Dampfdruckes, selbst nach langen Reaktionszeiten, zu einer viel wasserärmeren Stufe abgebaut. Der Bodenkörper zeigt bei einem Restgehalt von 5Mol H2O noch deutlich, bei 3 Mol und darunter abklingend die Interferenzen des Zehnhydrates neben zunehmend amorpher Beschaffenheit, die mit 2 Mol Restwasser praktisch voll erreicht ist. Dieser „instabile Abbauvorgang“ ist nicht reversibel; vorsichtige Wiederanwässerung der Rückstände aus dem Dampfraum oder auch leichtes Antempern der zwischen 10 und 3H2O liegenden Bodenkörper, etwa auf 50°, fuhrt diese „instabilen“ Abbausysteme in die „stabilen“ Verhältnisse über, d. h. veranlaßt  -  rontgenographisch festgestellt  -  die Bildung des Fünfhydrates.

    Notes: Für den Nachweis geringer Mengen Kobalt neben Eisen mittels der Ammoniumrhodanid-Acetonreaktion wird zur Abscheidung des Ferrieisens gefälltes Calciumcarbonat verwendet. Während nach der Arbeitsweise von VOGEL (Trennung mittels Sodalösung) und nach der Methode von KOLTHOFF (Komplexmachung des Ferrieisens mittels Ammoniumfluorid) die Empfindlichkeit der Kobaltreaktion wesentlich herabgesetzt wird, wird bei der Eisenabscheidung mittels Calcium carbonat der Kobaltnachweis nicht beeinträchtigt, indem noch 1,5 mg Co/Liter neben einer mindestens 10000 fachen Menge Eisen durch die mit Rhodanid-Aceton eintretende Blaufärbung nachweisbar sind. Die bei den Methoden von VOGEL baw. KOLTHOFF für die eintretende Verminderung der Empfindlichkeit des Kobaltnachweises mit Rhodanid-Aceton in Betracht kommenden Umstände werden an Hand von Versuchen besprochen.

    Notes: Die Reaktion: NaCl + HBr ⇄ NaBr + HCl wird auf ihre Gleichgewichte bei 850 und 950° von beiden Seiten untersucht. Der Bodenkörper besteht aus einer homogenen Schmelze von NaBr und NaCl. Es gilt das Molenbruchmassenwirkungsgesetz sehr gut, so daß die Idealität der Schmelzen NaCI, NaBr nach-gewiesen ist. Die Wärmetönung ΔW der Reaktion ergibt sich zu -3400 cal.

    Notes: Wismut verbindet sich mit Perchlorsäure außer zum neutralen Salz Bi(ClO4)3 zu drei gut definierten, basischen Salzen, in denen sich Wismut und Perchlorat in den molaren Verhältnissen 1:1, 3:2 und 2:1 befinden. In wäßriger Lösung setzt sich das neutrale Salz in das Bismutylperchlorat um. Während dieses in Wasser sehr leicht löslich ist, lösen sich die beiden anderen Salze nur zu etwa 1/40 Mol/Liter. Mit HiIfe von konduktometrischen, potentiometrischen und thermometrischen Titrationen, Bestimmung des Molekulargewichtes nach der Diffusionsmethode und Aufnahme der optischen Absorptionsspektren wurde versucht, die Existenzbereiche der verschiedenen basischen Salze in Lösung bei Gegenwart von überschüssiger Perchlorsäure bzw. überschüssigem Natriumperchlorat zu bestimmen. Es ergab sich daß, daß in 0,1 m-Lösung (in bezug auf BiOOH) das neutrale Salz nur in sehr stark sauren Lösungen beständig ist und bereits beim Verhältnis 6,s Mole Perchlorsäure: 1 Mol Bismutylhydroxyd vollständig zu dem im festen Zustand noch nicht sicher bekannten BiOH(ClO4)2 hydrolysiert ist. Dieses hydrolysiert beim Verkleinern der Perchlorsäurekonzentration unter gleichzeitiger Aggregation zu der Verbindung (BiOH)2O(ClO4)2·aq. Diese Reaktion ist beim Verhältnis 2,5 Mole Perchlorsäure auf 1 Mol Bismutylhydroxyd augenscheinlich zu Ende und es setzt nun ein weiterer Kondensationsvorgang zu (BiOH)4O3(ClO4)2·aq. ein. Infolge der Schwerlöslichkeit dieses Produktes ließen sich in der Lösung keine Untersuchungen mehr anstellen. Bei Gegenwart von überschüssiger Lauge setzt sich der Bodenkörper allmählich um zu gut kristallisiertem Wismutoxyd.

Darüber hinaus gelang die genauere Festlegung der Homogenitätsgebiete dieser einzelnen Phasen wie folgt: 1Co zeigt kein oder nur ein außerordentlich geringes Lösevermögen für S.2Die β-Phase (Co4S3) ist nur bei Temperaturen oberhalb 787° beständig, ihre größte Ausdehnung umfaßt 1,3%. Der eutektoide Zerfall in Co + γ läßt sich durch Abschrecken nicht oder zum mindesten nur sehr unvollkommen unterdrücken.3Stöchiometrisch zusammengesetztes CoS erscheint nicht homogen.     Notes: Bei Versuchen über die Zusammensetzung des Kaolinmoleküls (der Tonsubstanz) ist zu berücksichtigen, daß der als Versuchsmaterial verwendete Zettlitzer Kaolin nicht zu 100% aus reiner Tonsubstanz besteht, sondern mindestens 10%, Beimengung in Form von Feldspat und Glimmerresten enthält. Aus diesem Grunde kann eine Wasserabbaukurve niemals 2 Mol H2O anzeigen. Es erscheint demnach durchaus verständlich, wenn Körner, Pukall und Salmang bei einem isobaren Abbau nur etwa 1,5 Mol gebundenes Wasser feststellen konnten. Da eine hydrothermale Synthese des Kaolins aus Feldspat, Glimmer usw. möglich ist, gelingt es auch, die in gewöhnlichem Kaolin vorliegenden Beimengungen durch eine hydrothermale Nachbehandlung in Kaolin umzuwandeln. Bei einem so behandelten Kaolin läßt sich der Gehalt an gebundenem Wasser bis auf 1,76 Mol H2O erhöhen. Hieraus ist zu schließen, daß die Zusammensetzung der Tonsubstanz, wie allgemein angenommen, der Formel Al2O3·2 SiO2·2H2O entspricht.

    Notes: Für das Zustandekommen anomaler Mischkristalle mit NH4Cl wird folgende Regel aufgestellt: Schwermetallchloride, die mit NH4Cl entweder keine Doppelsalze bilden können oder solche, die in sehr hohem Maße dazu befähigt sind bzw. solche, deren Doppelsalze schwer löslich sind, geben keine anomalen Mischkristalle mit NH4Cl. Schwermetallchloride, die nur dann Doppelsalze mit NH4Cl bilden, wenn die Lösung genügende Mengen dieser Chloride enthält, neigen in an Schwermetallchloriden armen Lösungen zur Bildung anomaler Mischkristalle.

    Notes: Aus den besprochenen Untersuchungen geht hervor, daß ein Calciumion sich mit einem Lactation zu dem einfach positiv geladenen Ion CaC3H5O3+ vereinigt. Da eine solche Komplexbildung nur in gleichzeitiger Gegenwart einer Alkoholgruppe und einer negativ geladenen Gruppe stattfindet, müssen diese Gruppen an der Komplexbildung teilnehmen. So tritt z. B. Komplexbildung ein in calcium-hydroxydhaltigen alkoholischen Zucker- und Glycerinlösungen, wogegen in Acetatlösungen oder in den Lösungen anderer Salze der Fettsäuren keine Komplexbildung eintritt. Auch in nichtionisierter Milchsäure sind Hydroxylgruppe und negativ geladene Gruppe nicht gleichzeitig vorhanden und es tritt daher auch keine Komplexbildung mit der freien Säure ein. Die Komplexbildung geht nach folgender Gleichung vor sich: C3H5O3- + Ca++ = C3H5O3Ca+.
