Beschreibung: The radiocarbon age measurements reported on in this article were made during a period from May, 1957, through May, 1958. During this time the laboratory was operated by the Department of Anthropology, under the direction of Dr. Emil W. Haury. On July 1, 1958, the Carbon-14 laboratory, under the supervision of Dr. Paul E. Damon with Dick Shutler, Jr. as laboratory technician, was transferred to the Geochronology Laboratories.

Beschreibung: The radiocarbon laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania is sponsored jointly by the University Museum and the Physics Department. In this laboratory our primary function is to date archaeologic samples from those four regions of the world in which the University Museum studies are concentrated, namely, the Near East, South America, Central America, and the Arctic. Dates for sites in the first two regions are included in this list, and a long series of temple lintels from Tikal, Guatamala is now being processed. Dates for the Arctic were obtained intermittently from 1953 through 1955 (with solid-carbon counting); others, more recently. The materials for many of the Arctic dates, however, were not reliable; that is, they were physically contaminated before processing in the laboratory. We hope that better samples can be found for future Arctic dating. Our Arctic dates which now furnish tentative age ranges for Punuk, Birnirk, Kachemak Bay III, Okvik, Old Bering Sea, Ipiutak, Norton, Dorset, Kachemak Bay I, Choris, Firth River (Early Mountain Phase), Sarqaq, and Denbigh Flint Complex Periods have been submitted to American Antiquity (Rainey and Ralph, in press) along with detailed discussions of possible contaminations.

Beschreibung: The rate of strain tensor at a point on the surface of a glacier may be determined by setting up a number of stakes in a pattern and measuring the rate of change of the distances between them. A suitable pattern consists of four stakes at the corners of a square with one stake at the center. Five such patterns were used on Austerdalsbreen, Norway, in August 1956. The problem is to deduce the best values of the 3 independent components of the strain-rate tensor from the 8 measured quantities, and, for this purpose, a least-squares method, invented by Bond for the analogous problem in crystal physics, is used. The principal strain-rates are found to within about ±0.005 yr.−1and their directions relative to the stake system to within about ±0.5°. The directions and magnitudes of the principal stresses are then deduced from Glen’s flow law and a suitable general theory. The directions of the principal strain-rates are in good agreement with the directions of the crevasses, but the experiment is inconclusive on the question of the magnitude of the stress needed to form a crevasse.

Beschreibung: The distribution of velocity along a vertical line in Greenland is calculated. Almost all the relative shear motion is concentrated at and very near to the bottom, and this result is thought to apply generally in Greenland and Antarctica. It is due to the relatively high temperature of the lowest layers and the strong dependence of creep rate on temperature. The outward velocity being thus almost constant with depth, it is assumed proportional to the mth power of the shear stress on the bed; the results previously obtained by the approximation of perfect plasticity then correspond to m→∞. Steady-state solutions for finite m are derived, and non-steady states are discussed by use of Weertman’s perturbation method. The steady-state height of an ice sheet is found to be very insensitive to the rate of accumulation. Surface waves in Antarctica are attributed to mountains buried beneath the ice, and it is shown how the height and form of a buried mountain ridge may be calculated from the associated surface disturbance. The application of a law of sliding to glaciers leads to an expression for the longitudinal strain-rate, hitherto an undetermined parameter.

Beschreibung: A number of measurements of ice flow in the coastal regions of Antarctica are given. Observations show that the general outward movement of the continental ice, termed “sheet flow”, is locally accelerated where “ice streams” are formed. Estimates indicate that ice streams, which only occupy a small fraction of the total length of coast, are responsible for the removal of more ice from the continent than the “sheet flow” over the remaining length of coast. Further estimates suggest that the great bulk of Antarctic icebergs are produced by ice shelves, but that data on ice shelf movement are inadequate at the time of writing.

Beschreibung: The general characteristics of the coastal regions between long. 45° E. and long. 80° E. are described. The features and conditions are similar to those found along the coasts of the Australian sector further to the east. Measurements of accumulation, snow transport, ice flow and ablation are described and results are given.Accumulation, measured from stakes and pits, is 1.0 × 1014gm./yr. in a 1 km. wide strip running 850 km. inland from the coast of MacRobertson Land. The methods of gauging drifting snow and extrapolating the results are given and a meridional mass transport of 0.16 × 1014gm./km. yr. is deduced. Iceberg calving rates given in a previous paper are again quoted, although they are now felt to be too low. Net ablation is 0.053 × 1014gm./km. yr. and additional evaporation above the firn limit accounts for 0.045 x 1014gm./km. yr. The estimates are compared with old and new observations from other parts of Antarctica and the problem of bottom melting beneath ice shelves is discussed.A distinction is made between the meteorological water budget for Antarctica and the glaciological mass balance for the ice sheet. Mass budgets for the sector between long. 45° E. and long. 80° E. and for the whole of Antarctica are drawn up. In each case a surplus of accumulation over losses appears, but it is felt that the data are insufficient to claim that the ice sheet is growing at the present time. The drift snow and ablation losses are added to the net accumulation to give a figure of14cm. of water as the mean annual precipitation over Antarctica, a value lying between the estimates of Meinardus and Kosack.

Beschreibung: Glaciological studies during the Sheffield University Expeditions to Kilimanjaro in 1953 and 1957 included a survey of the glaciers and a close examination of the Penck Glacier and the stagnant remnants of the ice cap on the summit. The Penck Glacier has done little downcutting although it rests on friable rock. The glaciers and summit remnants are rapidly retreating, the Penck Glacier having retreated 3 m. in 3 months in 1957, and nearly 300 m. since 1912. The main accumulation zone appears to be at about 4,500–5,000 m. with a local “low level” firn line and an upper firn line above the top of the mountain. Maps of the glaciers, their recent fluctuations and moraines are being prepared. The glaciological and meteorological observations in 1957 form part of the I.G.Y. programme for East Africa.
