Description / Table of Contents:
The systematology of the corrosion of metals in soil (II).-LeadThe second part of the investigation on the systematology of the corrosion of metals in soil is devoted to the behaviour of lead and lead cables. Again, the corrosion phenomena taking place on the surface of the metal are of an electrochemical nature. The distribution of the anodic and cathodic zones on the lead surface depends on the size of the soil particles, on the water saturation condition of the soil, on the pH value of the soil, and on the duration of the test. With the field tests, the dissolution rate of lead with 1 pC Sb and commercial lead has been clearly found dependent on the average annual rainfalls and on the pH value of the soil. The corrosion-chemical behaviour of the lead cable sheathing in soil is governed by stress corrosion. An initial localisation of the corrosion phenomena is accompanied by plastic deformations which then cause electro-chemical reactions.
Notes:
