Notes: Abstract Classification of sandstones, greywackes, pelites, limestones, dolomites, and acid-igneous and basicigneous rocks, using a literature sample of 183 post-1920 analyses for the 11 major oxides has achieved an 80-percent success rate. The method is based on nonparametric estimation of a probability density function for each category to be classified, using the Bayes decision rule. The method is suitable for use with small training sets and gives much improved results over a linear discriminant function. Classification following data compression using principal components also has given satisfactory recognition rates.

Notes: Abstract This paper embodies petrographical and statistical investigations of three gabbro occurrences. The Mangaon and Kunkeri gabbros are similar in petrography and petrochemistry, whereas they are completely different from the Vajrat gabbro. Application of recently developed statistical tests help in classifying these gabbros by using three oxides, CaO, FeO, and K2O.This study shows that the evolution of the Mangaon and Kunkeri gabbros probably proceeded along different lines as compared to the Vajrat gabbro.

Notes: Abstract Application of the sliding correlation technique has permitted detailed stratigraphic correlation over entire basins. The main values of the technique are to (1) demonstrate correlation statistically, (2) extend the range of visual correlation, and (3) establish precise correlation where correlation is known to exist but is difficult to establish visually. The technique is especially valuable in aiding correlation of stratigraphic sequences such as varves and turbidites, which are characterized by monotonous repetition of two or more lithologic components. The moving correlation technique is a valuable aid in examining variations in degree of correlation between correlative sections, and in analysis of component associations within a single stratigraphic sequence.

Notes: Abstract A new algorithm has been developed by J. W. Sammon for the nonlinear-point mapping of high-dimensional data in two dimensions such that the inherent structure of the data is approximately preserved. This paper describes results using several sets of geologic data including stratigraphic thickness, petrographic modal analysis, and morphological or geochemical measurements. Comparisons are made with hierarchical cluster analysis using dendrogram representation. Initial results are encouraging and suggest that the technique could have widespread geological applications.

Notes: Abstract Afortran iv computer program for grey-level mapping of spatial data using a CDC 6600 is described. The program produces maps for irregularly distributed data in as many as 10 intensity levels which are displayed in grey tones by a lineprinter. Unlimited map size and unrestricted data input provide for as many as 5000 data points per 13-in.-wide strip of map. The program is easily modified for other installations. Examples are given of geochemical analyses of stream sediments in Northern Ireland.

Notes: Abstract A piston core from the southern Blake Basin penetrated nine distinct bioclastic carbonate turbidites separated by pelagic terrigenous clay units. X-ray diffraction analysis of the carbonate mineralogy of the graded, laminated, and homogenous units of the individual turbidite units indicated a general loss of unstable carbonates in the homogenous unit beyond that contained in the lower two units. Univariate and multivariate statistical tests were employed to determine the significance of the changes and to determine if different units of a turbidite sequence could be consistently grouped by statistical methods. Principal components, discriminant function, and cluster analysis were used in the multivariate tests. The graded and laminated units were closely related in mineralogy with little significant differences. The mineralogy of the homogenous units was significantly different than that of the other two units except in one example. Cluster analysis generated five groupings of the samples with the end members consisting of graded and laminated units at one end and homogenous units at the other.

Notes: Abstract The technique of instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) has been used to analyze chip samples of geological material for 12 elements. Discriminant analysis has been used to classify the unknown chip samples to the correct stratum in a sedimentary succession.

Notes: Abstract The use of principal component analysis in studying chemical trends in volcanic rock suites is described. It is suggested that eigenvectors generated from a correlation matrix, rather than a covariance matrix, could be used in this context. In the latter situation many elements are swamped by silicon's numerical size and range. In the former situation the alkalies and titanium begin to show their true importance.

Notes: Abstract Broken straight lines on probability paper have been proposed as representing the cumulative probability distributions of SiO2, Na, and Cl in certain plutons. This corresponds to pairs of complementarily truncated normal or lognormal distributions. It is shown that alternative representations, such as pairs of overlapping complete normal or lognormal distributions, yield fits equally acceptable statistically if the sample selection is random. The method also yields a good description of distributions described as “complex.” Computer methods of optimizing the free parameters are used; significance testing is discussed in some detail. It is stressed that although significance testing is helpful, it can neither relieve the geochemist of the burden nor take from him the privilege of being independent, and forming his opinion on the total evidence.

Notes: Abstract A rigorous treatment of the least-squares estimation of the parameters in petrologic materials balance equations is developed to take into account the uncertainties inherent in the chemical analyses. The choice of the optimal estimation procedure for a particular problem is dependent upon the extent of the petrogenetic understanding of the exact nature of the materials balance involved. Some of the complications entailed in obtaining least-squares estimates are illustrated by the examples of magmatic differentiation and metamorphic reactions.
