Notizen: Abstract A superlinear procedure for finding a multiple root is presented. In it the secant method is applied to the given function divided by a divided difference whose increment shrinks toward zero as the root is approached. Two function evaluations per step are required, but no derivatives need be calculated.

Notizen: Abstract Various factors that can effect thermal blooming in stagnation zone situations are examined, including stagnation-zone motion, longitudinal air motion in the neighborhood of the stagnation zone, and the effects of scenario noncoplanarity. Of these effects, only the last offers reasonable hope of reducing the strong thermal blooming that normally accompanies stagnation zones; in particular, noncoplanarity should benefit multipulse more than cw beams. The methods of treating nonhorizontal winds hydrodynamically for cw and multipulse steady-state sources are discussed. Aspects of pulse “self-blooming” are also considered.

Notizen: Abstract General formulas for the average contrast and probability density function of the sum ofN partially-developed, correlated speckle patterns have been theoretically derived. These two parameters characterizing the statistical properties of added speckle patterns have been actually evaluated for the sum of two partially-developed, correlated speckle patterns and shown in figures as a function of the surface roughness of illuminated objects, the wavelength difference of two illuminating lights, and the number of scattering cells within the illuminated area of objects.

Notizen: Abstract A new rigorous differential formulation to compute the scattering matrix of an obliquely oriented cylinder of finite conductivity and arbitrary shape is given. The analytic continuation of the scattering operator is examined in the frequency domain as well as in the propagation constant domain. The corresponding computer program is able to compute the singularity expansion for such a cylinder, as well as the propagating mode along it. Numerical examples are given.

Notizen: Abstract We investigate the conditions under which an optical system (or device) may transform polarization states at its input into orthogonal states at its output. We find that such polarization orthogonalization is possible if the Jones matrix of the optical system satisfies a specific inequality. One, two, or an infinite number of input polarization states may be orthogonalized. In the latter case, the locus of input states is a circle in the complex plane (and on the Poincaré sphere) of polarization. Several examples are given for illustration.

Notizen: Abstract This paper analyses effects related to the real part of the gaseous electric susceptibility in microwave-microwave and infrared-microwave double resonance experiments on two transitions with a common level. The most interesting features are obtained when the gaseous refractive index is probed far off resonance, i.e. in the tail of the dispersion characteristic and when the pump frequency is scanned around the resonance: a resonant change of the refractive index for the probe field is observed, the shape of which is that of the saturated pump line. A calculation using a model of strong collisions gives results in good agreement with the experimental ones. Applications of these phenomena to the determination of frequencies and transition matrix elements of infrared lines are discussed in the general case of lack of overlapping of the laser gain profile and of the infrared line. It is proposed to use these dispersion effects to detect Doppler-free infrared two-photon molecular absorption.

Notizen: Abstract The solution of the inverse problem of electromagnetic scattering by smooth, convex shaped, perfectly conducting, 3-dimensional scatterers is analysed. Certain geometrical as well as physical-optics approximations were used to incorporate the concepts of the “Minkowski problem” of differential geometry into the space-time integral solution of electromagnetic scattering to yield the formal solution for the recovery of the surface profile of the scatterer from the scattered field data. Although various efficient solutions for target identification are available, still information contained in polarization-depolarization characteristics of the scatterer is not yet exploited to its full extent. Therefore the underlying assumption in this investigation was based on the fact that the “depolarization characteristics” of the scattered field do necessarily contain information regarding the surface profile of the scatterer.

As is done in spectroscopy, selection rules for the propagation directions of the diffracted field are deduced. Some remarks about the case of propagating modes along a dielectric rod are also made.

Notizen: Abstract The coherent interaction of short optical pulses with a nonlinear active resonant medium is calculated. The rigorous and self-consistent solution of the coupled nonlinear Maxwell-Bloch equations including transverse and time-dependent phase variations predicts the onset on an on-resonance self-focusing that agrees very well with a previous perturbation treatment and with recent experiments in sodium and neon. The formation of this dynamic self-action effect is elucidated as being due to the combined effects of diffraction and the inertial response of the active media. Accuracy and computational economy are achieved simultaneously by redistributing the computational grid points according to the physical requirements of the problem. Evenly spaced computational grids are related to variable grids in physical space by a range of stretching and rezoning techniques including adaptive rezoning where the coordinate transformation is determined by the actual physical solution.

Notizen: Abstract We consider the 4×4 scattering matrixS for a plane wave incident on a plane-stratified gyrotropic multilayer slab, which is assumed to have a single symmetry axis (the magnetisation vector in a ferrite sheet, or the external magnetic field direction in a plane-stratified magnetoplasma). In the given (original) problem the plane of incidence is at an azimuthal angle ϕ with respect to the magnetic meridian plane (the plane containing the normal to the stratification, and the gyrotropic symmetry axis), and there is a corresponding “conjugate” set of wave fields, in which the plane of incidence is at an azimuthal angle (π−ϕ), with a corresponding conjugate scattering matrixS′. Adjoint wave fields, obtained by reversing the magnetic symmetry vector, are used to yield the eigenmode amplitudes required in the definition of the scattering matrices. At an interface between two adjacent layers the scattering matrices are shown to be uniquely determined by the characteristic wave polarisations, and this is used to prove that the given and conjugate scattering matrices,S andS′, for the overall multilayer system are mutually transposed, i.e. $$S = \tilde S'$$ .

Notizen: Abstract The characteristics of slab waveguide tapers with finite-thickness cladding are investigated by approximating the tapered section as a series of uniform five-layer waveguides with successive changes in the core and cladding thickness. The behaviour of multimode coupling and transmission characteristics for typical tapers are studied in detail by computer simulation, employing parameter values appropriate for practical systems. Strong coupling and efficient conversion between core and cladding modes are demonstrated. In addition, it is shown that for tapers of moderate slopes, the nearest-neighbour coupling approximation is quite adequate for the calculation of the individual mode amplitudes. For steeper tapers, however, additional neighbouring modes have to be taken into account, and the modal energy tends to spread further towards the higher-order modes. It is also demonstrated that relatively large step-size can be used in the iterative numerical calculations. This, in conjunction with the choice of an appropriate coupling scheme (e.g., the nearest-neighbour approximation for mild tapers), makes it possible to reduce the cost of computer simulation. The relevance of the present analysis to fiber tapers is also discussed.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we consider the propagation of a low-power laser beam in an inhomogeneous plasma with a dielectric-constant variation which linearly decreases away from the interfacez=0. It has been shown that the inhomogeneity of the plasma may cause the laser beam to focus into a line, a situation which could be of importance in x-ray laser studies and also in the ablation halo of laser fusion pellets.

Notizen: Abstract The major objective of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of imposing local resonance conditions while simultaneously controlling phase front properties upon transmission through slowly-varying Fabry-Perot type interferometers. The interaction of arbitrarily distorted incident phase fronts with double and triple-screened resonators is formulated, and appropriate design procedures are outlined. Special attention is paid to the significant effects of dielectric loading on the effective frequency band and to the cross polarization problem which arises, unavoidably, in conjunction with two-dimensional phase front distortions. The suggested design procedures are demonstrated via concrete numerical examples which are subsequently analyzed throughout a finite (20%) bandwidth.

Notizen: Abstract Wave front of a light pulse is shown to be unstable as it propagates through a resonant saturable absorber, if its frequency is higher than the resonance frequency of the absorber. When ΔωT 2∼1, a small-scale transverse instability with the dimension of (λl abs)1/2 grows rapidly. Its growth-rate is of the order of the small-signal-absorption length of the medium.

Notizen: Abstract The electromagnetic scattering from axisymmetric conducting or nonconducting (dielectric) obstacles, embedded in an axisymmetric dielectric body is treated. A surface integral equation formulation, consisting of coupled Fredholm equations of the first kind for the electric and magnetic fields, is solved by the method of moments. The outer surfaces of the internal obstacles and the embedding dielectrics can be nonconcentric, depart significantly from a spherical shape, but must be rotationally symmetric about a common axis. The embedding dielectric can be multilayered. Computer implementable expressions are given for the scattering cross sections for any desired polarization and for both backscatter (monostatic) and bistatic illumination. Comparisons are made with the extended boundary condition method for homogeneous dielectric bodies and the Mie theory extended for dielectrically clad conducting spheres. The generality of the present formulation is demonstrated for several other cladded scatterer configurations.

Notizen: Abstract A previously derived eigenmode scattering theorem for plane-stratified gyrotropic media established that the scattering matricesS andS′, defined, respectively, in terms of a given and a conjugate set of eigenmode amplitudes, are mutually transposed, i.e. $$S = \tilde S'$$ , the theorem being valid specifically for the incoming and outgoing eigenmodes ofgyrotropic bounding media. In this paper the theorem is extended to include linearly and circularly polarized base-modes in theisotropic media which may bound the multilayered, gyrotropic structure. Transformation of the eigenmode scattering matrix leads to a generalization of the scattering theorem to include base modes which are not necessarily eigenmodes of the medium. In the important special case in which the ambient magnetic field is parallel to the plane of the stratification, the scattering matrix is shown to have a special symmetry whose form depends on the base modes chosen (eigenmodes, linear modes or circular modes).

Notizen: Abstract The computation of time-dependent three-space-dimensional laser beam propagation is described. The methods are applicable to the propagation of high energy laser beams through the atmosphere in the presence of a horizontal wind and turbulence for most situations of interest. Possible cases are propagation of cw beams through stagnation zones, multi-pulse propagation, including the self-consistent treatment of pulse self-blooming, and propagation involving transonic slewing. The solution of the Maxwell wave equation in Fresnel approximation is obtained by means of a discrete Fourier transform method, which, surprisingly, gives excellent results for diffraction problems. The latter provide a stringent test for the accuracy of any solution method. Considerable use is also made of discrete Fourier transform methods in solving the hydrodynamic equations. The treatment of turbulence is based on the generation of random phase screens at each calculation step along the propagation path. In a time-dependent calculation the random phase screens can be either made to move with the wind at a given propagation position or generated anew for each successive time.

Notizen: Abstract This paper reports the observation of a well defined radiation mode emitted from a superradiant dye laser pumped by a pulsed nitrogen laser. Beam geometry and spatial coherence of the dye laser are studied in connection with the pumping geometry. It is shown that under favorable pumping conditions most of the excited molecules radiate into the same spatial mode by stimulated emission. The associated mode structure is also calculated based on a model of a properly phased dipole distribution. The calculated emission pattern reproduces the observed far field pattern closely.

Notizen: Abstract Basic properties are given of the prism anamorphic expander of a Gaussian beam composed of a couple of prisms in tandem. Its shorter overall length for a given expansion, relative ease of optical adjustment, a sharp selection of polarization component, and rather small inclusive dispersion make it an excellent beam expander in a specific laser cavity. The design principle is presented of the prism system with a grating for an anastigmatic optical resonator for a dye laser of narrow linewidth and of short pulse duration.

Notizen: Abstract A method to compute the propagating modes of graded index waveguides with an arbitrary refractive index distribution is proposed, based on the variational method applied to the integral wave equation. The method is applied to two refractive index distributions: a Gaussian index distribution and a complementary error-function index distribution. The results are compared with the predictions of perturbation analysis and are experimentally verified by measuring the mode spectrum of a Ti-diffused LiNbO3 waveguide.

Notizen: Abstract An integral expression is derived for the fields in parabolic-index waveguides with distorted optical axis. It is based on well-known ray matrix techniques and generalized Huygens integrals. The distortions give rise to beam oscillations which in turn are identified as the excitation mechanism for radiation modes. The model gives some better understanding of the transition regions between waveguides.

Notizen: Abstract A short description of a rigorous electromagnetic theory based on the numerical integration of a differential system is given. It allows the study of the stop-bands of a corrugated waveguide. Dispersion curves in the first and the second-order stop-bands are computed for various periodic waveguides. A selection rule due to the symmetry of the corrugation is found. The reflection of a plane wave by the guide is examined. It is demonstrated that under peculiar circumstances, the reflection coefficient has a modulus equal to unity.

Notizen: Abstract It is proven here that a bounded perturbation of the discrete dynamic programming functional equation arising from the Bolza problem yields a bounded change in its solution. This stability property encourages the development of approximation techniques for solving such equations. One such technique, involving the backward solution of an approximate functional equation as a prediction step, followed by a forward reconstruction using true equations as a correction step, is then discussed. Bounds for the errors arising from such an approximation procedure are derived. Successive approximations is suggested, in conclusion, as a means for obtaining improved solutions.

Notizen: Abstract Saddlepoint strategies are deduced for a class of linear, single-input differential games. Conditions necessary for a saddle-point, as well as sufficient conditions, are discussed. The results are illustrated with a simple example. For the case of one control subject to a norm bound and the other to a quadratic penalty, the results are extended to the vector case and applied to the stabilization of a system subject to norm-bounded input disturbance.

Notizen: Abstract In formulating solutions forn-person cooperative games, the concept of stability has played a dominant role. Although the core concept has the strongest stability, the core of a game is often empty. In this paper, the taxation system is incorporated into our framework, so that a modified solution concept, which enjoys the stability of core, can be developed. Various formulations based on principles such astaxation proportional to income andequity after tax are given.

Notizen: Abstract This paper is concerned with a class of noncooperative games ofn players that are defined byn reward functions which depend continuously on the action variables of the players. This framework provides a realistic model of many interactive situations, including many common models in economics, sociology, engineering, and political science. The concept of Nash equilibrium is a suitable companion to such models. A variety of different sufficient conditions for existence, uniqueness, and stability of a Nash equilibrium point have been previously proposed. By sharpening the noncooperative aspect of the framework (which is really only implicit in the original framework), this paper attempts to isolate one set of “natural” conditions that are sufficient for existence, uniqueness, and stability. It is argued thatl ∞ quasicontraction is such a natural condition. The concept of complete stability is introduced to reflect the full character of noncooperation. It is then shown that, in the linear case, the condition ofl ∞ quasicontraction is both necessary and sufficient for complete stability.
