Notizen: Abstract 1. Myxococcus xanthus B and M. virescens V2 were compared with a view to establishing the control of their morphogenetic cycles. Both organisms are typical myxococci and on solid media with low concentrations of nutrient they form fruiting bodies, within which vegetative cells convert to myxospores. Ultrathin sections of vegetative M. virescens resembled those of M. xanthus and contained prominent heavily stained bodies, presumed to be polyphosphate granules. Shadowed preparations showed fimbriae associated with M. xanthus but not with M. virescens. 2. M. xanthus B converted to myxospores in liquid medium in response to certain alcohols. M. virescens V2 produced phase-refractile spheres, which were not viable and had an unusual ultrastructure. 3. The distributions of fruiting bodies on solid media containing 0.02% Casitone were recorded for the two species and were compared with a Poisson distribution. Cells responded to differences in cell density in a manner suggestive of a response to a chemotactic attractant. Cells growing vegetatively and also cells forming fruiting bodies produced 3′,5′-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) as measured by the incorporation of exogeneous [3H] adenosine into cAMP. 4. The significance of these findings for theories of fruiting body formation are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Many statistical pattern-recognition techniques depend for their application on the generation of one or more prototype patterns for each decision class. In turn, the determination of prototypes is dependent on the underlying probability distribution associated with a given class and that distribution's relationship to the distributions associated with the remaining classes. If these distributions are known, the problem of classification is considerably less complex than if they are unknown. The problem of recovering an unknown underlying distribution is one that has received considerable attention. The results thus far, however, are nonpractical. A practical technique that makes use of certain parameters related to sample size is presented and verified.

Notizen: Abstract A computational algorithm is presented for the extraction of an optimal single linear feature from several Gaussian pattern classes. The algorithm minimizes the increase in the probability of misclassification in the transformed (feature) space. The general approach used in this procedure was developed in a recent paper by R. J. P. de Figueiredo.(1) Numerical results on the application of this procedure to the remotely sensed data from the Purdue C1 flight line as well asLandsat data are presented. It was found that classification using the optimal single linear feature yielded a value for the probability of misclassification on the order of 30% less than that obtained by using the best single untransformed feature. The optimal single linear feature gave performance results comparable to those obtained by using the two features which maximized the average divergence. Also discussed are improvements in classification results using this method when the size of the training set is small.

Notizen: Abstract A correlation classifier and a maximum likelihood quadratic classifier are used to classify single evoked potentials from four different, visual stimuli. Forward sequential feature selection was employed with the quadratic classifier to reduce data dimensionality. The features selected by this method were the signal amplitudes at latencies at which polarity reversals were present in the averages. Examination of detected peaks from the single v.e.p.s suggested that the polarity reversals were also present in the single v.e.p.s. The quadratic classifier gave better than 90% recognition for the case of four classes and three classes.

Notizen: Abstract The paper reports some results with phonocardiogram pattern classification. Linear prediction analysis was applied to extract the spectral pattern from phonocardiogram signals, a relatively new technique. In this examination, 29 design samples are classified correctly, except for three samples; and 19 test samples correctly, except for five samples. The characteristics for each class are well extracted and the results of the classifications are good. The efficiency of the spectral features for phonocardiogram classification has been confirmed experimentally.
