Description: The growing size and complexity of spacecraft power systems coupled with limited space/ground communications necessitate increasingly automated onboard control systems. Research in computer science, particularly artificial intelligence has developed methods and techniques for constructing man-machine systems with problem-solving expertise in limited domains which may contribute to the automation of power systems. Since these systems perform tasks which are typically performed by human experts they have become known as Expert Systems. A review of the current state of the art in expert systems technology is presented, and potential applications in power systems management are considered. It is concluded that expert systems appear to have significant potential for improving the productivity of operations personnel in aerospace applications, and in automating the control of many aerospace systems.

Description: Problems encountered during the Space Shuttle's development that were due to the unique configuration of the vehicle are discussed. While conventional rocket space vehicles have been symmetric, greatly simplifying the analysis and integration of constituent elements, the Space Shuttle's combination of a winged orbiter with side-mounted solid rocket boosters and a large propellant tank presented a more complex system for the analysis and testing of ascent flight control, propulsion system, aerothermodynamics and structural dynamics. Attention is given first and second stage flight operations, return-to-launch-site, abort-once-around and abort-to-orbit mission modes, propulsion system and propulsion test development, and the aerothermodynamics of the external propellant tank and Orbiter.

Description: Systems studies and critical technology issues for the development and evaluation of Satellite Power Systems (SPS) for the photovoltaic generation of electrical energy and its transmission to earth are reviewed. Initial concept studies completed in 1976 and system definition studies initiated in the same year have indicated the technical feasibility of SPS and identified challenging issues to be addressed as part of the SPS Concept Development and Evaluation Program. Systems considered in the study include photovoltaic and solar thermal power conversion configurations employing klystron or solid state microwave generators or lasers for power transmission, and power transmission options, system constructability and in-orbit and ground operations. Technology investigations are being performed in the areas of microwave power transmission, structure/controls interactions and the behavior of key materials in the space/SPS environment. Favorable results have been obtained in the areas of microwave phase distribution and phase control, dc-RF conversion, antenna radiating element, and no insurmountable problems have been discovered in any of the investigations to date.

Description: The article examines several aspects of electric propulsion. It is shown that because the process and rate of energy transfer in electric systems are quite different from those of chemical propulsion systems, performance and orbit mechanics are intimately related. Attention is given to the several discrete subelements of an electric primary propulsion system, showing that while they have straightforward operating principles, they present challenges in implementation as working hardware. Finally, discussion covers applications which include a range of interplanetary and near-earth missions.
