    Notes: Electronic size distributions of erythroid cells from fetal C57BL-6J mice during the eleventh through twentieth days of gestation indicate that the erythropoietic cell populations are constantly changing. The mean volume of the liver derived non-nucleated erythroid population decreases from four times the mean adult erythrocyte volume on the thirteenth gestation day to twice the adult erythrocyte volume at birth. The mean volume of the nucleated erythroid cell is about ten times the mean adult erythrocyte volume. The gestation age of an embryo can be determined from blood cell size distributions. The mode of the non-nucleated population and the percentage of each population indicates the gestation age.Size distribution of cells in density gradient fractions apparently indicate two size populations of non-nucleated cells between the thirteenth and fifteenth days. The density of the non-nucleated cells increases during gestation. It is suggested that the decrease in size and increase in density of non-nucleated cells is due to the release of successively smaller reticulocytes from the liver.

    Description: An in-flight visibility test conducted on the Apollo 14 mission is discussed. The need for obtaining experimental data on lunar feature visibility arose from visibility problems associated with various aspects of the Apollo missions; and especially from anticipated difficulties of recognizing lunar surface features at the time of descent and landing under certain illumination conditions. Although visibility problems have influenced many other aspects of the Apollo mission, they have been particularly important for descent operations, due to the criticality of this mission phase and the crew's guidance and control role for landing site recognition and touchdown point selection. A series of analytical and photographic studies were conducted during the Apollo program (prior to as well as after the initial manned lunar operations) to delineate constraints imposed on landing operations by visibility limitations. The purpose of the visibility test conducted on Apollo 14 was to obtain data to reduce uncertainties and to extend the analytical models of visibility in the lunar environment.

    Description: New photoelectric observations yield V(1, alpha) equals 12.95 + 0.036 alpha + or - 0.05, B-V equals 0.65 + or - 0.03, and U-B equals 0.18 + or - 0.03 for Deimos and V(1, 0) equals 11.9 + or - 0.2 for Phobos. The derived geometric albedos of both satellites are near 0.065. Combined photometric and polarimetric results lead to the conclusion that the satellites have dusty surfaces and are possibly basaltic but more likely carbonaceous in composition.

    Notes: The electrophoretic mobilities (E.P.M.) and pH-mobility relationships of chick blastoderm cells at successive developmental stages were determined. Mobilities in 0.145 M NaCl, pH 7.2, showed a wide spread and decreased from a mean value of 1.63 μ/sec/V/cm in the prestreak blastoderm, to 1.49 in the intermediate streak and 1.34 in the head process stages. Cell surface charge density changes as detected by E.P.M. were observed in all regions of the embryo.pH-mobility relationship studies showed that two cell populations differing in their approximate isoelectric point appeared at the intermediate streak and head process stages. Neuraminidase treatment indicated that the contribution of sialic acid residues to the negatively charged groups at the cell surfaces is very small at the stages studied.

    Description: The content and isotopic composition were studied of inert gases -- He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe -- in samples of lunar regolith returned by the Luna 16 automatic station. The samples were taken from depths of about 12 and 30 cm. The high concentrations of inert gases exceed by several orders their concentrations observed in ordinary stony meteorites. The gases in lunar regolith were a complex mixture of gases of different origins: Solar, cosmogenic, radiogenic, and so on. Solar wind gases predominated, distributed in the thin surficial layer of the regolith grains. The concentrations of these gases in the surficial layer is several cubic centimeters per gram. The isotopic composition of the inert gases of solar origin approaches their composition measured in gas-rich meteorites.

    Notes: The antenna of fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti has one peg organ of a basiconic type innervated by four neurons. The dendrites are ensheathed to near their terminations at the peg tip by an electron-dense dendritic sheath and by a cuticular sheath. They have easy communication by diffusion with the external environment only at the tip through a peripheral ensheathing membrane and six slit-channels. One of the dendrites resembles a tubular body proximally and may be mechanoreceptive. The peg generally appears to be a contact chemoreceptor. There are three antennal hairs of a typical sensillum trichodeum type innervated at the base by one neuron each. An intricate terminal mechanism at the insertion of the dendrite in the hair is described. These are believed to be tactile hairs. There are also three antennal hairs each innervated by two neurons. The dendrite from one terminates at the base similar to that of a tactile hair, and is believed to function in a similar mechanoreceptive manner. The dendrite from the second neuron extends naked along the length of the hair lumen. It is believed to be primarily chemoreceptive, in a slow-acting general sensory function. In all the sensilla there appear to be secretions produced in the junction body regions of the dendrites, and there is evidence for accumulation of secretory materials in the dendritic tips in some of the sensilla.

    Notes: The fine structure of the antenna and of the antennal sensory cone, the largest of the eight antennal sensilla, of fourth instar larvae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti are described and discussed. The antennal integument supports and encloses only sensillar elements. The antennal sensory cone seems to be a chemoreceptor of a modified composite basiconic type. It is innervated by about 12 neurons grouped into six units. Each neuronal unit has a trichogen and tormogen cell, but no neurilemma or other accessory cells, associated with it. Stimulating molecules may diffuse directly through the non-perforate conical cuticular covering to the dendritic branches, and through six vacuoles between the dendrites and the epicuticle at the base of the cone. Peripheral vesicles in the cone, their probable formation from secretions produced in the junction body region, and their possible function in the stimulating mechanism of the sense organ are described and discussed. Dendritic neurotubules originate from ciliary tubules in the junction body region, in the dendritic plasma, or by branching. Tight junctions provide possible electrotonic coupling between all the dendritic branches of the sensillum, and between dendrites in each unit. The neuronal perikaryons and portions of the axons and proximal dendrites are not ensheathed, but extend naked in close proximity through the antennal hemo-sinus into an ensheathed nerve at the base of the antenna.

    Notes: Pyroantimonate precipitate indicates that the epithelium of the proximal tubule is the only segment of the tubular nephron of the fresh water lamprey where large accumlations of cations are distributed. Unusually large amounts of reaction product are located within the lateral intercellular spaces and within vesicles closely associated with the plasma membrane at the lateral and basal surfaces. This technique suggests the continuity of these vesicles with the plasma membrane and alludes to the possibility of an endomembranous system of vesicles and the intercellular spaces as vehicles for ion transport. Lateral intercellular spaces of proximal tubules of lower vertebrates may play a different role in kidney function that their counterparts in higher vertebrates.Osmium-zinc iodide has a specificity for certain cells within the proximal, intermediate, and distal segments, but no structural differences are noted when these cells are compared to unstained cells. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum remains unstained in the distal segment but the stain has a strong affinity for elements of the Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and the nuclear envelope of all cell types. This technique does not suggest a structural or functional similarity between cells of the distal segment and the chloride cells of the gills of teleosts.

    Description: A historical account of observations of Venus and their interpretation is given. The major constituent of the atmosphere on Venus (CO2) was detected spectroscopically forty years ago, and minor constituents (CO, HF, HCl) have been found more recently. The infrared spectra also provide a means of studying the motions of her cloudly atmosphere. The composition of the clouds has been sought in the reflection spectrum of Venus, and some of the evidence for their nature is discussed.

    Description: A critical analysis of selected high-quality photometric observations of Mars indicates that: (1) the phase function is concave upward out to at least 40-deg phase. No sudden brightening occurs at opposition, but the curvature increases at small phase; (2) large systematic differences (0.1-0.2 mag.) exist between different observers' data. However, the small random scatter attributable to Mars (0.01-0.02 mag.) in the better series suggests that these differences represent systematic errors in data reduction, not variations in the planet's brightness; (3) the disentangling of seasonal, diurnal, and phase effects leaves considerable ambiguity; more observations are needed, over a long time, with a stable instrumental system. However, even the present data are sufficient to expose substantial errors in published phase curves of Mars (and consequently, in interpretations based on them).
