Description: Hydrogenous manganese nodules form on the ocean floor by slow authigenic precipitation (1-6 mm/Ma) of the oxyhydroxides of manganese and iron that continuously scavenge trace elements from the marine environment. Consequently, these nodules represent independent marine deposits useful for the study of the chemical signatures of the paleomarine environments. The results presented are a continuation of a study of the Zetes-3D nodule from the Pacific Ocean. It is a large (24x17x10 cm) hydrogenous nodule whose slow growth rate of 1.3 mm/Ma was detremined using 10Be techniques. A positive cerium anomaly is observed throughout the nodule and its Ir content indicates a sharp spike at 54-62 Ma in fair agreement with the K-T event.

Description: On a previous R/V Polarstern cruise ANT-VIII/5 (1989/90), a deep-sea area in the central Weddell Sea was investigated along geophysical and bathymetrical transects. As a result, a seamount-like structure, the informally named "Polarstern Seamount", was detected. This seamount was one of the sampling areas during the ANT-IX/3 leg. Attempts were made to retrieve glaciomarine and hemipelagic sediments, which in this area were expected not to be so strongly affected by bottom currents as are the sediments in the deeper surroundings seas. The seafloor on top of the Polarstern Searnount revealed to be densely covered with Mn encrusted dropstones, as observed by the underwater video-recording obtained from a camera installed at the multi box corer (MG), as well as in the retrieved sediments.

Description: The aim of the sedimentological program of Leg ANT-X/2 was to densify the existing sample network in the area of the Weddell Sea and the Lazarev Sea, or fill the gaps in previous geological investigation sections due to bad weather conditions, unfavorable ice conditions or technical failures. The planned survey of Leg ANT-X/2 from the southwestern Weddell Sea to the eastern Lazarev Sea was only slightly affected by ice conditions. In particular, two stations were successfully conducted on the Polarstern Seamount, an area which had been previously surveyed in 1991 during R/V Polarstern Leg ANT-IX/3.

Description: Seven Alvin dives (14 km total) and numerous deep-towed camera traverses using ANGUS and NOAA camera systems provide dense coverage of a 12-km2 portion of the eastern wall of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the TAG area (26°N lat.). These data, in conjunction with recent Soviet Mir submersible data, provide important constraints on the tectonic, magmatic, and hydrothermal history of this spreading center segment. Active hydrothermal venting occurs near the junction of the median valley floor and eastern median valley wall and appears to be tectonically controlled by the intersection of major fault zones. An east-west fault-line scarp interpreted as an accommodation zone intersects escarpments associated with 020°-trending (ridge-parallel) normal faults that bound the median valley floor. The accommodation zone permits differential extension and rotation between major crustal blocks to the north and south. On the basis of the distribution of tilted chalk beds and geochemical anomalies in sediments, this fault zone has been intermittently active for at least 5x104 yr. The accommodation zone has apparently provided a conduit of high permeability oriented at a high angle to the ridge axis. Observations and samples from areas surrounding active and inactive vent sites provide evidence for three distinct episodes for hydrothermal outflow driven by separate magmatic events. The geometry of this active system may have implications for the location of hydrothermal systems in active spreading regimes and for massive sulfide exploration in ophiolite terranes.

Description: During Dive 408 of Shinkai 2000 on the flank of the Kaikata Seamount located on the volcanic front of the Izu-Ogasawara (Bonin) Arc, possibly recent hydrothermal manganese deposits were observed on sandy volcanic sediments at water depths of between 800 and 1200 m. The deposits cover almost the entire surface sediment across the manganese belt on the northwestern flank on the seamount on a scale of kilometers. The occurrence of the deposits, seafloor morphology and temperature of the sediments, together with previous shipboard results, lead to a possible model for the formation of the manganese deposits: A low-temperature hydrothermal solution ascends through fractures or faults in the volcanic substrate into permeable volcanic sands and precipitates manganate minerals which cement several centimeters of surface sand as hardpan. More intense and probably intermittent discharge of hydrothermal solution follows and forms many typical ridge-like vents and mounds on the seafloor. Subsequently, pure dense manganate layers developed beneath the semi-consolidated volcanic sandstone and act as a cap to the ascending fluids. The proposed mechanism may be the dominant type of low-temperature hydrothermal mineralization in submarine island-arc volcanoes and rifts. Similar hydrothermal manganese deopsits most probably occur in other active areas of the modern seafloors and in inactive island arcs.

Description: A high-resolution study including oxygen and carbon stable isotopes as well as carbonate and total organic carbon contents, has been performed on undisturbed near-surface (0-40 cm) sediment sequences taken in the eastern Arctic Ocean during the international Arctic 91 Expedition. Based on the oxygen stable isotope records measured on Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.) and AMS 14C dating, the upper 10 to 20 cm of the sediment sequences represent isotope stage 1, and the base of Termination I (15.7 ka) can be identified very well. Stage 1 sedimentation rates vary between 0.4 and 〉2.0 cm/kyr. In general, glacial stage 2 sedimentation rates are probably lower and vary between 0.4 and 0.7 cm/kyr. The glacial-interglacial shifts in delta18O values of N. pachyderma sin. may reach values of 1.3 to 2.5 per mil indicating (1) that, in addition to the glacial-interglacial global ice-volume signal, changes in surface-water salinity have effected the isotope records and (2) that these salinity changes have varied laterally. Glacial-interglacial differences in salinity were small in the Lomonosov Ridge area (0-0.4 per mil) and relatively high in the Morris-Jesup-Rise area (up to 1.4 per mil). This implies that the supply of low-saline waters onto the Eurasian shelves and its further transport into the central Arctic Ocean via the Transpolar Drift should have continued during the last glacial and should have significantly influenced the surface water characteristics in parts of the central Arctic. On the Morris-Jesup-Rise, on the other hand, the glacial low-saline-water signal at that time was strongly reduced in comparison to the modern situation. At the glacial-interglacial stage 1/2 boundary, a strong meltwater signal is recorded in a sharp depletion in delta18O as well as delta13C. This central Arctic Ocean meltwater event can be correlated from the Makarov Basin through the Lomonosov Ridge and Amundsen Basin to the eastern Gakkel Ridge. The beginning of this event is AMS 14C dated at 15.7 ka, i.e., significantly older than the major decrease in the global ice-volume signal which occurs between 9 and 13.5 ka. Large amounts of freshwater/meltwater were probably supplied from the Eurasian continent due to the decay of the Barents-Sea-Ice-Sheet, causing this distinct early meltwater anomaly in the central Arctic Ocean. The extension of a well-oxygenated surface-near water mass in the Arctic Ocean and (at least seasonal) open-ice conditions and some increased bioproductivity were probably established at the end of Termination I, as indicated by the increase in delta13C to modern values as well as increased carbonate (i.e., foraminifers, coccoliths, ostracodes) and total organic carbon contents.

Description: Experimental substitutions of transition and alkaline earth cations into synthetic 10angstrom(Na-)-manganate show that cation uptake and the stability of the cation-substituted mineral increase with stability of the hydroxide of the cation. Hydrothermal treatment of synthetic 10angström-manganates with different metal contents as well as marine diagenetic and hydrothermal 10angstrom-manganates shows that the stabilities of their structures are enhanced with increasing temperature. The stabilization is due to reinforcement of the "tunnel" walls supporting the [Mn4+O62-] octaheral layers. The diagenetic 10angström-manganates have initially unstable buserite-like structures with each interlayer wall composed of two [Mn2+O3+x2-(OH-)3-x] octahedra (0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 3) with either a [Na+O2x2-(OH-)n-2x] unit (n = 6 and/or 8) or less frequently a [Mn2+O2x2-(OH-)6-2x] octahedron in between. Some of these cations in the walls are post-depositionally substituted by highly hydrated divalent metal cations, particularly Cu2+ and Ni2+, while some of the Mn2+ ions are slowly oxidized to Mn4+. These interlayer changes result in higher crystal field stabilization energy and shifts from interlayer Van der Waal's forces and weak coordination links to strong coordination links which stabilize the mineral structures. Low-temperature hydrothermal 10angstrom-manganates have todorokite-like structures with "tunne"' walls constructed predominantly of [Mn2+O3+x2-(OH-)3-x] and [Mn2+O2x2-(OH-)6.2x] octahedra. High-temperature hydrothermal 10angstrom-manganates have stable todorokite structures with the walls constructed of [Mn4+O62-] octahedra. The positive correlation between the formation or post-depositional alteration temperatures and the mineral stability is due to the increase in oxidation rate of interlayer Mn2+ ions with increasing temperature of the hydrothermal fluids. Marine 10angstrom-manganates can be used as genetic indicators for manganese concretions and the sediments in which they occur and as a geothermometer in the search of ancient and modern hydrothermal vents, where massive sulphide deposits are often found.

Description: The accretion rate of manganese nodules and the sedimentation rate of the underlying sediment has been studied with 10Be and 14C on a nodule covered hill in the Madeira Abyssal Plain. The accretion rate of (3.2 +/- 0.6) mm/Ma for the nodules is considerably smaller than the average sedimentation rate of 12 mm/ka for the last 50-100 ka. The mechanism that kept the nodules at the surface in this specific environment during the last 40 ka is likely to be flotation. The discovery of a large manganese-covered concretion in a piston core points to a long period of sediment winnowing. The 14C analyses also seem to point to an increase in the sedimentation rate round 6500 yrs B.P.

Description: Although ferromanganese crusts from shallow depths in Lake Baykal have been described previously, the presence of nodules at depths of about 500 m are a new discovery made possible by exploration using manned submersibles. The nodules are comparable to oceanic nodules in composition, but have some significant differences, including a more rapid rate of growth. Sedimentary-diagenetic processes are mainly responsible for their formation, but there is reason to believe hydrothermal fluids play some role.

Description: The concentration of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni, Co, Ag, Mn, Fe, Ca, Mg, K and Na in molluscs Macoma balthica, Mya arenaria, Cardium glaucum, Mytilus edulis and Astarte borealis from the southern Baltic was determined. The surface sediments and ferromanganese concretions associated with the molluscs were also analysed for concentration of these metals. Species- and region-dependent differences in the metal levels of the organisms were observed. The properties of molluscs analysed which have a tendency toward elevated biological tolerance of selected trace metals were specified. The interelement relationship between metal concentrations in the soft tissue and the shell was estimated and was discussed.

Description: The research cruise SO79 with RV SONNE (April 18 to June 09 1992) aimed to assess the impact of a potential mining activity on the sensitive deep-sea ecosystem of the Peru Basin. Up to now only results of reconnaissance surveys of the extended manganese nodule field discovered in 1978 in the Peru Basin are available. The hydroacoustic, sedimentological, and geochemical studies on data and sample material of SO79 came to the following results: a small-scaled variation in thickness respectively type of surface sediments shown by the sediment echosounder respectively the side-scan-sonar is assumably due to variations in deposition or erosion. The composition of sediments is controlled by climatic cycles of different length which were caused by the variable influence of glaciation of the northern hemisphere. We think that during the quaternary a deep-water circulation reduced in intensity and O2-content may have produced a suboxic diagenetic environment which led to a remobilization and redeposition of Mn forming manganese nodules in the oxic surface sediments. Near the distinct redox boundary at about 10 cm depth the growth conditions for nodules are extremely favourable. Due to the great variability of sediments the impact of deep-sea mining will be highly variable and the disturbance of the seafloor will change the ecosystem considerably.

Description: In 1986 participants of the Benthos Ecology Working Group of ICES conducted a synoptic mapping of the infauna of the southern and central North Sea. Together with a mapping of the infauna of the northern North Sea by Eleftheriou and Basford (1989, doi:10.1017/S0025315400049158) this provides the database for the description of the benthic infauna of the whole North Sea in this paper. Division of the infauna into assemblages by TWINSPAN analysis separated northern assemblages from southern assemblages along the 70 m depth contour. Assemblages were further separated by the 30, 50 m and 100 m depth contour as well as by the sediment type. In addition to widely distributed species, cold water species do not occur further south than the northern edge of the Dogger Bank, which corresponds to the 50 m depth contour. Warm water species were not found north of the 100 m depth contour. Some species occur on all types of sediment but most are restricted to a special sediment and therefore these species are limited in their distribution. The factors structuring species distributions and assemblages seem to be temperature, the influence of different water masses, e.g. Atlantic water, the type of sediment and the food supply to the benthos.
