    Description: Semiquantitative data of calcareous nannofossil species abundance were collected for 31 samples from 380.00 to 696.61 m below sea floor (mbsf) in the CIROS-1 core from the western McMurdo Sound (Ross Sea). This core has provided the most complete record of Paleogene glacial history of Antarctica. Only half of the samples yielded calcareous nannofossils and species diversity is generally low. However, several samples contain diverse assemblages and nannofossil zonal markers. Isthmolithus recurvus was found between 406.57 and 681.16 mbsf. This species has an age range of ~35-39 Ma in the mid to high latitudes, as calibrated previously by magnetostratigraphy at a number of DSDP/ODP sites. The interval from 406.57 to 681.16 mbsf can be assigned to the late Eocene-earliest Oligocene (~35-39 Ma), and the sample at 391.85 mbsf, which still contains Reticulofenestra hillae and Reticulofenestra umbilica but does not contain I. recurvus, is identified as early Oligocene age (~33-34 Ma). This represents an age refinement of the previous nannofossil biostratigraphy, where the interval from 385.77 to 690.40 mbsf was dated as middle Eocene-early Oligocene. Comparison of the nannofossil assemblages in the CIROS-1 core with those in a similar glaciomarine sequence recovered in Prydz Bay (East Antarctica) and those at deep-sea ODP Sites 738 and 744, where lowermost Oligocene ice-rafted debris (IRD) were found, suggests that the nannofossils in the CIROS-1 core samples examined are in situ. The semiquantitative nannofossil data also suggest that Isthmolithus recurvus and Reticulofenestra davies¸ are most tolerant of cold waters within the late Eocene-early Oligocene nannofloras.

    Description: The object of the present study is to introduce a means of comparing the Vostok and marine chronologies. Our strategy has been to use the delta18O of atmospheric O2 (denoted delta18Oatm) from the Vostok ice core as a proxy for the delta18O of seawater (denoted delta18Osw). Our underlying premise in using delta18Oatm as a proxy for delta18Osw is that past variations in delta18Osw (an indicator of continental ice volume) have been transmitted to the atmospheric O2 reservoir by photosynthesizing organisms in the surface waters of the world's oceans. We compare our record of delta18Oatm to the delta18Osw record which has been developed from studies of the isotopic composition of biogenic calcite (delta18Oforam) in deep-sea cores. We have tied our delta18Oatm record from Vostok to the SPECMAP timescale throughout the last 135 kyr by correlating delta18Oatm with a delta18Osw record from V19-30. Results of the correlation indicate that 77% of the variance is shared between these two records. We observed differences between the delta18Oatm and the delta18Osw records during the coldest periods, which indicate that there have been subtle changes in the factors which regulate delta18Oatm other than delta18Osw. Our use of delta18Oatm as a proxy for delta18Osw must therefore be considered tentative, especially during these periods. By correlating delta18Oatm with delta18Osw, we provide a common temporal framework for comparing phase relationships between atmospheric records (from ice cores) and oceanographic records constructed from deep-sea cores. Our correlated age-depth relation for the Vostok core should not be considered an absolute Vostok timescale. We consider it to be the preferred timescale for comparing Vostok climate records with marine climate records which have been placed on the SPECMAP timescale. We have examined the fidelity of this common temporal framework by comparing sea surface temperature (SST) records from sediment cores with an Antarctic temperature record from the Vostok ice core. We have demonstrated that when the southern ocean SST and Antarctic temperature records are compared on this common temporal framework, they show a high degree of similarity. We interpret this result as supporting our use of the common temporal framework for comparing other climate records from the Vostok ice core with any climate record that has been correlated into the SPECMAP chronology.

    Description: The radioactivity of bottom sediments has been but little investigated. Data published by Joly, Pettersson, Piggot and Iimori refer to determinations of radium, contained mainly in oceanic deep-water sediments in red clays, radiolarian, globigerina oozes, blue muds and manganese concretions. The determinations have shown the manganese concretions to be richest as regards content of radium (up to 10-8 per cent); red clays and radiolarian ooze also possess a rather high content of radium. Other types of sediments are less rich in radium.

    Description: Hydrogenous manganese nodules form on the ocean floor by slow authigenic precipitation (1-6 mm/Ma) of the oxyhydroxides of manganese and iron that continuously scavenge trace elements from the marine environment. Consequently, these nodules represent independent marine deposits useful for the study of the chemical signatures of the paleomarine environments. The results presented are a continuation of a study of the Zetes-3D nodule from the Pacific Ocean. It is a large (24x17x10 cm) hydrogenous nodule whose slow growth rate of 1.3 mm/Ma was detremined using 10Be techniques. A positive cerium anomaly is observed throughout the nodule and its Ir content indicates a sharp spike at 54-62 Ma in fair agreement with the K-T event.

    Description: Manganese deposits are abundant in various places in the Oshima Peninsula southwest of Hokkaido. This is particular the case of Todoroki Mine situated about 25 kilometers to the south-east of the Ginzan railway station in Siribesi Province. It consists of manganese beds intermixed with a tertiary volcanic tuff complex overlaying granite.

    Description: Seven Alvin dives (14 km total) and numerous deep-towed camera traverses using ANGUS and NOAA camera systems provide dense coverage of a 12-km2 portion of the eastern wall of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the TAG area (26°N lat.). These data, in conjunction with recent Soviet Mir submersible data, provide important constraints on the tectonic, magmatic, and hydrothermal history of this spreading center segment. Active hydrothermal venting occurs near the junction of the median valley floor and eastern median valley wall and appears to be tectonically controlled by the intersection of major fault zones. An east-west fault-line scarp interpreted as an accommodation zone intersects escarpments associated with 020°-trending (ridge-parallel) normal faults that bound the median valley floor. The accommodation zone permits differential extension and rotation between major crustal blocks to the north and south. On the basis of the distribution of tilted chalk beds and geochemical anomalies in sediments, this fault zone has been intermittently active for at least 5x104 yr. The accommodation zone has apparently provided a conduit of high permeability oriented at a high angle to the ridge axis. Observations and samples from areas surrounding active and inactive vent sites provide evidence for three distinct episodes for hydrothermal outflow driven by separate magmatic events. The geometry of this active system may have implications for the location of hydrothermal systems in active spreading regimes and for massive sulfide exploration in ophiolite terranes.

    Description: During Dive 408 of Shinkai 2000 on the flank of the Kaikata Seamount located on the volcanic front of the Izu-Ogasawara (Bonin) Arc, possibly recent hydrothermal manganese deposits were observed on sandy volcanic sediments at water depths of between 800 and 1200 m. The deposits cover almost the entire surface sediment across the manganese belt on the northwestern flank on the seamount on a scale of kilometers. The occurrence of the deposits, seafloor morphology and temperature of the sediments, together with previous shipboard results, lead to a possible model for the formation of the manganese deposits: A low-temperature hydrothermal solution ascends through fractures or faults in the volcanic substrate into permeable volcanic sands and precipitates manganate minerals which cement several centimeters of surface sand as hardpan. More intense and probably intermittent discharge of hydrothermal solution follows and forms many typical ridge-like vents and mounds on the seafloor. Subsequently, pure dense manganate layers developed beneath the semi-consolidated volcanic sandstone and act as a cap to the ascending fluids. The proposed mechanism may be the dominant type of low-temperature hydrothermal mineralization in submarine island-arc volcanoes and rifts. Similar hydrothermal manganese deopsits most probably occur in other active areas of the modern seafloors and in inactive island arcs.

    Description: Experimental substitutions of transition and alkaline earth cations into synthetic 10angstrom(Na-)-manganate show that cation uptake and the stability of the cation-substituted mineral increase with stability of the hydroxide of the cation. Hydrothermal treatment of synthetic 10angström-manganates with different metal contents as well as marine diagenetic and hydrothermal 10angstrom-manganates shows that the stabilities of their structures are enhanced with increasing temperature. The stabilization is due to reinforcement of the "tunnel" walls supporting the [Mn4+O62-] octaheral layers. The diagenetic 10angström-manganates have initially unstable buserite-like structures with each interlayer wall composed of two [Mn2+O3+x2-(OH-)3-x] octahedra (0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 3) with either a [Na+O2x2-(OH-)n-2x] unit (n = 6 and/or 8) or less frequently a [Mn2+O2x2-(OH-)6-2x] octahedron in between. Some of these cations in the walls are post-depositionally substituted by highly hydrated divalent metal cations, particularly Cu2+ and Ni2+, while some of the Mn2+ ions are slowly oxidized to Mn4+. These interlayer changes result in higher crystal field stabilization energy and shifts from interlayer Van der Waal's forces and weak coordination links to strong coordination links which stabilize the mineral structures. Low-temperature hydrothermal 10angstrom-manganates have todorokite-like structures with "tunne"' walls constructed predominantly of [Mn2+O3+x2-(OH-)3-x] and [Mn2+O2x2-(OH-)6.2x] octahedra. High-temperature hydrothermal 10angstrom-manganates have stable todorokite structures with the walls constructed of [Mn4+O62-] octahedra. The positive correlation between the formation or post-depositional alteration temperatures and the mineral stability is due to the increase in oxidation rate of interlayer Mn2+ ions with increasing temperature of the hydrothermal fluids. Marine 10angstrom-manganates can be used as genetic indicators for manganese concretions and the sediments in which they occur and as a geothermometer in the search of ancient and modern hydrothermal vents, where massive sulphide deposits are often found.

    Description: The accretion rate of manganese nodules and the sedimentation rate of the underlying sediment has been studied with 10Be and 14C on a nodule covered hill in the Madeira Abyssal Plain. The accretion rate of (3.2 +/- 0.6) mm/Ma for the nodules is considerably smaller than the average sedimentation rate of 12 mm/ka for the last 50-100 ka. The mechanism that kept the nodules at the surface in this specific environment during the last 40 ka is likely to be flotation. The discovery of a large manganese-covered concretion in a piston core points to a long period of sediment winnowing. The 14C analyses also seem to point to an increase in the sedimentation rate round 6500 yrs B.P.

    Description: This text deals with the geochemistry of iron ores. By means of spectrochemical analyses some significant minor constituents have been determined in samples mainly from the pre-Cambrian iron-ore regions of Sweden. For the sake of comparison some samples of iron ores of different age from non-Swedish regions have been analysed. On the basis of the analytical data available some significant statistical quantities have been computed in iron ores as well as in the main igneous rock series. Special regard has been paid to the relationship between the distribution principles governing some major constituents in the iron ores, on the one hand, and in the igneous rocks on the other. A method is proposed for geochemical investigations of igneous rocks by means of statistical data. With the aid of geochemical premises the endogene relationship between iron ores and their associated igneous rocks has been discussed. A theory on the principles governing the formation of iron ores has been advanced and employed with special regard to the origin of the pre-Cambrian iron ores of Sweden.

    Description: Although ferromanganese crusts from shallow depths in Lake Baykal have been described previously, the presence of nodules at depths of about 500 m are a new discovery made possible by exploration using manned submersibles. The nodules are comparable to oceanic nodules in composition, but have some significant differences, including a more rapid rate of growth. Sedimentary-diagenetic processes are mainly responsible for their formation, but there is reason to believe hydrothermal fluids play some role.

    Description: The concentration of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni, Co, Ag, Mn, Fe, Ca, Mg, K and Na in molluscs Macoma balthica, Mya arenaria, Cardium glaucum, Mytilus edulis and Astarte borealis from the southern Baltic was determined. The surface sediments and ferromanganese concretions associated with the molluscs were also analysed for concentration of these metals. Species- and region-dependent differences in the metal levels of the organisms were observed. The properties of molluscs analysed which have a tendency toward elevated biological tolerance of selected trace metals were specified. The interelement relationship between metal concentrations in the soft tissue and the shell was estimated and was discussed.

    Description: The geographical, physical and biological aspects of the submarine canyons of the continental shelf off the coast of southern California have been described in earlier parts of this volume. Isopods were collected in 10 of the 15 canyons. Many benthic species were obtained since the specimens were obtained with a Campbell grab bottom sampler operated from the Hancock Foundation research vessel Velero IV.

    Description: New surveys were completed and data from the field sheets were kindly furnished by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for use in dredging and coring operations. This field work, first reported in 1936, was continued from time to time until 1941 as new soundings became available. Rock dredging and coring has been carried out in every major canyon on the slope from Corsair Canyon at the tip of Georges Bank to Norfolk Canyon off the entrance to the Chesapeake. Numerous cores have also been taken from the areas in between; and while the whole slope from Georges to the Chesapeake has not been covered, it is believed that no significant areas have been missed. In the following report the tows and cores will be described by areas from Georges Bank southwards, as the same region was revisited in successive years. The various samples, however, will be referred to by number followed by the year in which they were taken. The material is in storage in the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and in the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University.
