Notes: Abstract The quasistatic magnetic field responses (typically 0.8 Hz) of fluxoids in ac-axis oriented Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ (Y123) film have been studied using a computerized mechanical pendulum at 77 K. The resonance frequence of the pendulum is significantly shifted to higher values due to the interaction between the Y123 film and a magnet mounted on the pendulum. The contribution of the magnet-superconductor interaction to the shift of the squared resonance frequency shows, in a certain range, a logarithmic dependence on the driving force (proportional to the amplitude). The present results are consistent with the previous studies on the bulk Y123 materials for different configuration.

Notes: Abstract Using a computerized mechanical pendulum, we have studied the lateral magnetic flux motion of the Bi-based high-T c superconductors in the quasi-static magnetic field (0.1 Hz) for the range 1 μm to 0.35 mm. The effect of d.c. and a.c. transport currents on the flux motion has also been investigated. We argue that the lateral magnetic stiffness is a measure of the pinning potential of the fluxoids in the superconductors. The pinning energy barrierε is estimated to be about 0.3 eV based on the stiffness measurements, which is comparable with the data from the YBa2Cu3O7−χ superconductors.

Notes: Abstract Based on the London model, we have calculated the lifting forces acting on permanent (cylinder, ring, sphere, cone, etc.) magnets placed above an infinite superconducting plane. The theory has also been applied to obtain theoretical estimates of the forces acting on the semispherical and conical-shaped tips of a magnetic force microscope (MFM) over a high-T c superconductor.

Notes: Abstract From structural analysis we have shown in a previous investigation that the series TlBa2Ca n Cu n+1O2n+5 and Tl2Ba2Ca n Cu n+1O2n+6 are composed of superconductor-semiconductor arrays. In this paper, we demonstrate that the unit cell of the Tl2Ba2Ca n Cu n+1O2n+6 series can further be viewed as composed of a composite block of superconductor-metal-semiconductor, where TlBa2CuO5 is the fundamental superconductor, TlO the metallic unit, and CaCuO2 the semiconductor block. It is indicated that theT c of Tl(2201) can be deduced from that of Tl(1201) based on Kresin's model of composite systems.

Notes: Abstract We measure the relative permittivityε r and dielectric loss tangent tanδ of substrate materials for high-T c superconducting films at 18–300 K and at 5–10 GHz using the cavity-resonator method. The materials measured are single crystals of MgO, LaAlO3, YAlO3, LaSrGaO4, NdGaO3, sapphire, and ZrO2 ceramic. Theε r values are 10–30 and become almost constant below about 50 K. The tanδ values decrease with decreasing temperature and are below 1×10−5 at 77 K except for those of NdGaO3 and ZrO2 ceramic. This suggests that the tanδ values of MgO, LaAlO3, YAlO3, LaSrGaO4, and sapphire do not limit the quality factors of microwave passive components fabricated using high-T c superconducting films. It is also demonstrated that the tanδ of the substrate material is strongly affected by impurities.

Notes: Abstract Equilibrium and small oscillations in the system of high-T c superconductor (SC) and permanent magnet (PM) are considered. A phenomenological theory based on the observed magnetization curves for SC is given. The measured forces and oscillation frequencies in the system of YBa2Cu3O7 superconductor and SmCo5 permanent magnet are compared with the theoretical predictions. Conclusions are made as to the possible applications for studying the SC properties of materials.

Notes: Abstract We have shown in this paper that members of the Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O and Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconducting families fabricated so far are built up of superconductor-semiconductor arrays. Four general homologous series are written down for these two families. The basic fundamental block in each series is itself a superconductor. We suggest that the Y-Ba-Cu-O family has a similar characteristic if YBaCu2O5-d is a superconductor.

Notes: Abstract The critical currents and normal resistances of the small bridges from yttrium-based high-T c superconducting ceramics have been measured. The characteristic voltage of these bridges was found to be approximately 20 μV. This effect can be explained if, between the ceramic grains, there are contacts of an order of one crystalline cell in size.

Notes: Abstract Based on the London theory of superconductivity and using the quasistatic approximation, we have calculated the interaction energy between a superconducting plane and a dipole which is moving toward or away from the plane. Using the decoupling approximation, we have investigated the displacement and the angle flipping of a neutron, when the neutron moves toward or away from the superconducting plane. The theoretical model can, in principle, be applied to construct an apparatus to polarize the beam from a thermal neutron reactor.

Notes: Abstract Multifilament Ag-sheathed BiPbSrCaCuO (2223) superconducting tapes containing 49 filaments were fabricated by the powder-in-tube route and the roll-anneal process. The transport critical current densityJ c was 1.3×104 A cm−2 at 77 K and 7×104 A cm−2 at 4.2 K in self-field. A 12-m-long tape was used to construct superconducting solenoids (50, 28, and 14 mm internal diameters) generating dc fields 380–1070 G at 4.2 K. Measurements of the variation ofJ c with field (0–1.6 T) and bend strain (0–5%) are used to explain the performance of the solenoids. The critical bend strain of tapes was about 1.5%.
