Description: Geological observations, using "free-diving" techniques (Figure I) were made in September, 1960 and March 1961 along two continuous profiles in the outer Kiel Harbor, Germany and at several other spot locations in the Western Baltic Sea. A distinct terrace, cut in Pleistocene glacial till, was found that was covered with varying amounts and types of recent deposits. Hand samples were taken of the sea-floor sediments and grainsize distribution determined for both the sediment as a whole and for its heavy mineral fraction. From the Laboratory and Field observations it was possible to recognize two distinct types of sand; Type I, Sand resulting from transportation over a long period of time and distance and Type 11, Sand resulting from little transportation and found today near to xvhere it was formed. Several criterea related to the agent of movement could be used to classify the nature of the sediment; (1) undisturbed (the sediment Cover of the Pleistocene Terrace is essentially undisturbed), (2) mixed by organisms, (3) transported by water movements (sediment found with ripple marks, etc., and (4) "Scoured" (the movement of individual particles of sediment from around larger boulders causes a slow downward movement or "Creeping" which is due to both the force of gravity and bottom currents. These observations and laboratory studies are discussed concerning their relationship to the formation of residual sediments, the direction of sand transportation, and the intensive erosion on the outer edge of the wave-cut platform found in this part of the Baltic Sea.

Paleoceanography, 6(1), 33-52, https://doi.org/10.1029/90PA01941
    Publication Date: 2024-06-08
Description: We developed an isotope (87Sr/86Sr, delta18O) reference section for the uppermost Oligocene to lower upper Miocene (ca. 25-8 Ma) at Site 608 in the northeastern North Atlantic. This site contains the least ambiguous magnetostratigraphic record of Miocene polarity changes available, providing direct correlations to the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS). We integrate biostratigraphic, magnetostratigraphic, Sr isotope, and stable isotope data to provide a reference section for Miocene isotope fluctuations. The direct correlation of isotopes and biostratigraphy to the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) provides relatively precise age estimates. We use these age estimates to evaluate the timing of first and last occurrences of planktonic foraminifera, and conclude that many of these are synchronous within a 0.5 m.y. resolution between subtropical Site 563 (33°N) and high-latitude Site 608 (43°N). In addition, we use this chronology to estimate the ages of previously established Miocene oxygen isotope Zones Mi 1 through Mi 7 and to compare the Sr isotope record at Site 608 with previously published 87Sr/86Sr records. We approximate latest Oligocene to early late Miocene (25-8 Ma) Sr isotope changes with two linear regressions. The rate of increase of 87Sr/86Sr was high from the latest Oligocene (~25 Ma) to earliest middle Miocene (~15 Ma), with an estimated rate of 0.000059/m.y. Our ability to reproduce Sr isotope measurements is +/-0.000030 or better, yielding a stratigraphic resolution of as good as +/-0.5 m.y. for this interval. The rate of change was much lower from about 15 to 8 Ma (on average, 0.000013/m.y.), yielding Sr isotope stratigraphic resolution of worse than +/-2.3 m.y. The causes of the late Eocene to Miocene 87Sr/86Sr increases are not known. We speculate that a moderate 87Sr/86Sr increase (0.000030/m.y) which occurred during the late Eocene-latest Oligocene can be explained by intermittent glaciations and deglaciations of the Antarctic continent. These pulse-like changes in the input of glacial weathering products yield what appears to be a monotonic, linear increase. The increase in the frequency of glaciations during the latest Oligocene-early Miocene can explain the higher rate of change of 87Sr/86Sr at this time. We speculate that by the middle Miocene, the development of a permanent east Antarctica ice sheet resulted in decreased input of glacial weathering products and a lower rate of 87Sr/86Sr change.

Description: The Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) core can enhance our understanding of the relationship between parameters measured in the ice in central Greenland and variability in the ocean, atmosphere, and cryosphere of the North Atlantic Ocean and adjacent land masses. Seasonal (summer, winter) to annual responses of dD and deuterium excess isotopic signals in the GISP2 core to the seesaw in winter temperatures between West Greenland and northern Europe from A.D. 1840 to 1970 are investigated. This seesaw represents extreme modes of the North Atlantic Oscillation, which also influences sea surface temperatures (SSTs), atmospheric pressures, geostrophic wind strength, and sea ice extents beyond the winter season. Temperature excursions inferred from the dD record during seesaw/extreme NAO mode years move in the same direction as the West Greenland side of the seesaw. Symmetry with the West Greenland side of the seesaw suggests a possible mechanism for damping in the ice core record of the lowest decadal temperatures experienced in Europe from A.D. 1500 to 1700. Seasonal and annual deuterium excess excursions during seesaw years show negative correlation with dD. This suggests an isotopic response to a SST/ land temperature seesaw. The isotopic record from GISP2 may therefore give information on both ice sheet and sea surface temperature variability. Cross-plots of dD and d show a tendency for data to be grouped according to the prevailing mode of the seesaw, but do not provide unambiguous identification of individual seesaw years. A combination of ice core and tree ring data sets may allow more confident identification of GA and GB (extreme NAO mode) years prior to 1840.

    Publication Date: 2024-06-08
Description: This study tests and improves on previously published early and middle Miocene 87Sr/86Sr marine correlations, presents Sr isotopic age correlations for this interval using the new timescale of Cande and Kent [1992 doi:10.1029/92JB01202], and evaluates Sr isotopic changes against an inferred glacioeustatic proxy. We generated a latest Oligocene to early late Miocene 87Sr/86Sr isotope record from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 747A; this site provides an excellent magnetostratigraphic record during most of this interval for independent age estimates, very good foraminiferal preservation, and excellent core recovery. Comparisons of new 87Sr/86Sr data from Hole 747A with previously published data from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Sites 608 [Miller et al., 1991 doi:10.1029/90PA01941] and 588 [Hodell et al., 1991 doi:10.1130/0091-7613(1991)019〈0024:VITSIC〉2.3.CO;2] yield the following results: (1) confirmation and refinement of the early Miocene Sr isotope changes, (2) improved definition of the timing of the changes in slope of 87Sr/86Sr near 15.4 Ma and 22.8 Ma, (3) improved Sr isotopic age resolution for the middle Miocene with resolution as good as +/- 0.7 m.y., and (4) identification of an inflection in the Sr isotope record at 28.0 Ma based on the combined records from DSDP Site 522 [Miller et al., 1988 doi:10.1029/PA003i002p00223] and ODP Hole 747A. We have been unable to determine the cause of middle Miocene offset between Site 588 and Hole 747A data, although we believe it may be attributed to problems in the age assignments for Hole 588A for the interval ~14-11 Ma and Site 747 for the interval 11-8 Ma. Because Hole 747A results provide a better chronology than Site 588 for most of the Miocene and a better middle Miocene Sr isotope record than Site 608, we propose that Hole 747A serves as the best reference section for Miocene 87Sr/86Sr variations from ca. 23 to 11 Ma. Using 87Sr/86Sr data from Sites 522, 608, and 747A, we relate late Eocene to early Miocene inflections in the 87Sr/86Sr isotope record to oxygen isotope increases and decreases inferred to represent glacioeustatic events. The decreases (deglaciations) observed in the ?18O record apparently lead the 87Sr/86Sr inflections by 1 to 1.5 m.y.

Description: Vertical phytoplankton distribution, temperol fluctuations and sedimentation rates were studied in the central Baltic Sea during the "Baltic Sea Patchiness Experiment 1986" (PEX'86). Vertical particle flux was measured with free sediment traps deployed at 30 and 60m depth for ten April/May 1986 within the PEX grid (20 x 40 nautical drifting days in miles). In the vicinity of one drifting trap water samples were collected in 10-12 depths down to 70m and vertical profiles of temperature, salinity, beam attenuation and light intensity were measured at three hour intervals. Water samples were analyzed for Chl.a, POC and PON content, dry weight and nutrients. Particulate parameters including the activity of 137 Cs were measured in trap samples. Suspended and sedimented particulates were counted under an inverted microscope. Precision and accuracy of the microscopical counts are discussed and confidence limits are calculated for different spec1es and applied counting schemes. Errors in all cases were smaller than the observed in situ variability. A general description of spring blooms in the central Baltic is given and the particular situation of spring 1986 is summarized. Within the station grid of PEX'86 an anticyclonic eddy was observed in which this study was conducted. Here the phytoplankton had reached peak concentrations and mass sedimentation of diatoms was about to start. The bloom was dominated by Thalassiosira levanderi and Chaetoceros spp. (lOµm size). Achnantes taeniata, Mesodinium rubrum, Gonyaulax catenata and an autotrophic Gymnodinium species (26-30µm) were also abundant. Horizontal patchiness and advection caused greater variability in the distribution of phytoplankton biomass blooms as well as temperature and attenuation during the first days than during the latter half of the investigation period. In four different areas within the PEX grid different developed independently. On still smaller time and space scales, the phytoplankton species composition also changed. The degree of patchiness was different for different species. General concepts explaining vertical distribution patterns of phytoplankton by physical and biological mechanisms are discussed. The species-specific distribution of selected diatoms, dinoflagellates and of the funktionally autotrophic ciliate M.rubrum are described. None of the species were homogeneously distributed although no vertical density stratification was observed. Whereas the diatoms and M.rubrum were present within the whole trophogenic layer, the dinoflagellates were only found in the upper 30m. The vertical distribution was different for concentrations were encountered each at species and different maximum depths respectively. Mechanisms affecting species-specific distribution of mobile and non-mobile phytoplankters in isopycnal layers are discussed in light of the particular situation of this study. Diurnal vertical migration is shown for two dinoflagellates and the phytociliate and triggering factors are discussed. All three species migrated upwards during the day and downwards at night. In its detail, however, the migratory behaviour differed between species and also within single populations. Different strategies of adaptation of phytoplankton to changing environmental conditions are suggested: Wheras diatoms adapt to fluctuations of the light climate by physiological adaptations, mobile organisms have the possibility to stay in an isolume layer. The significance of turbulence, of chainformation and of resting stages in the life cycles of phytoplankton is also evaluated. Trap deployments reveiled that only T.levanderi and Chaetoceros spp. sedimented. Their daily relative sedimentation rates (losses as % of standing stocks) increased over time and were species-specific (for T.levanderi max. 50%). Since part of the T.levanderi population was actively dividing (20% of the standing stock was found as paired cells) their suspended concentration decreased slower than that of Chaetoceros spp., although the daily sedimentation of the latter species was only about 30% of the standing stock. T.levanderi occured in chains in the water column but only single cells were found in sedimented material and paired cells were never found in the trap samples. Chaetoceros spores were rare in the water column and only sporadically collected by the sediment traps. The relative sedimentation rate of all other species was less than 5% per day. The settling velocity of the cells was estimated in different independent ways to be about 40-60m/d. This high sinking speed was attributed to aggregate formation. The results indicate that aggregate formation is not only species-specific but also differs between life-stages within one species. Variability of sedimentation rates on a timescale of hours was high, suggesting a diurnal pattern. Sedimentation did not change the vertical distribution patterns, indicating that cells were sinking with similar rates from all depths. The advantages of a Lagrangian sampling strategy (time series measurements 1n the vicinity of a free drifting buoy) for investigating phytoplankton development in time are evaluated and compared to a sampling at a moored station (Eulerian approach). In an environment that exhibits an intense patchiness even at spatial scales of lOOm, as encountered in this study, the influence of advection and patchiness on a time-series with a resolution of hours to days can not be neglected even if the Lagrangian approach is followed. Furthermore, in this study the variability of var1ous parameters measured in an Eulerian mode was not generally higher than that following the Lagrangian one, as one would have expected.

Description: The Owen Ridge south of Oman represents oceanic crust that was uplifted by compressional tectonic forces in the early Miocene. Build-out of the Indus Fan led to deposition of a thick sequence of turbidites over the site of the Ridge during the late Oligocene and early Miocene. Early Miocene uplift of the Ridge led to a pelagic cap of nannofossil chalks. Two short sequences of turbidites from the pre- and syn-uplift phases were chosen for detailed grain size analysis. The upper Oligocene section at Site 731 is composed of thin (centimeter-decimeter scale) graded mud turbidites separated by relatively thick (decimeter-meter scale) intervals of homogeneous, non-bioturbated clayey siltstones. These finer intervals are unusually silt-rich (about 60%) for ungraded material and were probably deposited as undifferentiated muds from a series of turbidity current tails. By contrast, the lower Miocene section at Site 722 is comprised of a sequence of interbedded turbidites and hemipelagic carbonates. Sharp-based silt turbidites are overlain by burrow-mottled marly nannofossil chalks. The Oligocene sequence may have accumulated in an overbank setting on the middle fan - the local topographic position favoring frequent deposition from turbidity current tails and occasional deposition from the body of a turbidity flow. Uplift of the Ridge in the early Miocene led to pelagic carbonate deposition interrupted only by turbidity currents capable of overcoming a topographic barrier. Further uplift eventually led to entirely pelagic carbonate deposition.

Description: The book is devoted to investigations of benthic fauna and geology of the Southern Atlantic Ocean. These works have been carried out in terms of exploring biological structure of the ocean and are of great importance for development of this fundamental problem. They are based on material collected during Cruise 43 of R/V Akademik Kurchatov in 1985-1986 and Cruise 43 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev in 1989. Problems of quantitative distribution, group composition and trophic structure of benthos in the Southern Scotia Sea, along the east-west Transatlantic section along 31°30'S, and offshore Namibia in the area of the Benguela upwelling are under consideration in the book. Authors present new data on fauna of several groups of deep-sea bottom animals and their zoogeography. Much attention is paid to analysis of morphological structure of the Scotia Sea floor considered in terms of plate tectonics. Bottom sediments along the Transatlantic section and facial variation of sediments in the area of South Shetland Islands and of the continental margin of Namibia are under consideration.

Description: Recent studies of abyssal peridotites (Johnson et al., 1990, doi:10.1029/JB095iB03p02661), mid-ocean-ridge basalts (MORBs) (McKenzie, 1985, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(85)90001-9) and their entrained melt inclusions (Sobolev and Shimizu, 1993, doi:10.1038/363151a0; Humler and Whitechurch, 1988, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(88)90055-6) have shown that fractional melting of the upwelling sub-oceanic mantle produces magmas with a much wider range of compositions than erupted MORBs. In particular, it seems that strongly depleted primary magmas are routinely produced by melting beneath ridges (Johnson et al., 1990, doi:10.1029/JB095iB03p02661). The absence of strongly depleted melts as erupted lavas prompts the question of how long such magmas survive beneath ridges, before their distinctive compositions are concealed by mixing with more enriched magmas. Here we report mineral compositions from a unique suite of oceanic cumulates recovered from DSDP Site 334 (Aumento et al., doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.37.1977), which indicate that the rocks crystallized from basaltic liquids that were strongly depleted in Na, Ti, Zr, Y, Sr and rare-earth elements relative to any erupted MORB. It thus appears that the magmatic plumbing system beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge permitted strongly depleted magmas to accumulate in a magma chamber and remain sufficiently isolated to produce cumulate rocks. Even so, spatial heterogeneity in the compositions of high-calcium pyroxenes suggests that in the later stages of solidification these rocks reacted with infiltrating enriched basaltic liquids.
