Weiterhin untersuchen wir Beziehungen zwischen der Menge der Näherungslösungen eines Vektoroptimierungsproblems und den Näherungslösungen eines entsprechenden parametrischen Ersatzproblems. Schließlich beweisen wir Stabilitätseigenschaften des skalaren Ersatzproblems.
    Notes: Abstract We introduce a concept for approximately efficient solutions in vector optimization and compare it with another recent concept given in [8]. Further, we study relations between the set of approximately efficient solutions of a vector optimization problem and the approximate solutions of a corresponding parametric surrogate optimization problem. Finally, we prove stability properties for the scalar surrogate problem.

    Notes: Abstract The structure of solutions to the nonlinear parametric programming problem with a one dimensional parameter is analyzed in terms of the bifurcation behavior of the curves of critical points and the persistence of minima along these curves. Changes in the structure of the solution occur at singularities of a nonlinear system of equations motivated by the Fritz John first-order necessary conditions. It has been shown that these singularities may be completely partitioned into seven distinct classes based upon the violation of one or more of the following: a complementarity condition, a constraint qualification, and the nonsingularity of the Hessian of the Lagrangian on a tangent space. To apply classical bifurcation techniques to these singularities, a further subdivision of each case is necessary. The structure of curves of critical points near singularities of lowest (zero) codimension within each case is analyzed, as well as the persistence of minima along curves emanating from these singularities. Bifurcation behavior is also investigated or discussed for many of the subcases giving rise to a codimension one singularity.

    Notes: The distribution of assembly workstations enables assembly operations to be done in parallel, while the multiple routing of parts in flexible assembly systems allows the opportunistic scheduling of assembly operations. This paper presents an assembly planning system, called the Assembly Coplanner, which automatically constructs an assembly partial order and generates a set of assembly instructions from a liaison graph representation of an assembly based on the extraction of preferred subassemblies. Assembly planning in Coplanner is carried out by the co-operation of multiple planning agents, such as the geometric reasoner, the physical reasoner, the resource manager and the plan coordinator, under the constraints of finding a cost-effective assembly plan in a flexible assembly system. The Coplanner identifies spatial parallelism in assembly as a means of constructing temporal parallelism among assembly operations. This is achieved in the following way: (1) the selection of a set of tentative subassemblies by decomposing a liaison graph into a set of subgraphs based on feasibility and difficulty of disassembly; (2) the evaluation of each of the tentative subassemblies in terms of assembly cost represented by subassembly selection indices; and (3) the construction of a hierarchical partial order graph (HPOG) as an assembly plan. A case study applying the Coplanner to a mechanical assembly is illustrated in this paper.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal oxidative stability of various ABS/PC compounds was studied by means of the chemiluminescence technique. Similarly to pure ABS, Irganox 1076 and Irganox MD 1024 perform as moderate antioxidants in ABS/PC and (ABS/PC + lubricant) blends. Neither Tinuvin 144, Irgaphos 168, nor their mixture affects the durability of the ABS/PC blend. At the same time, (Irgaphos 168 + Tinuvin 144) in combination with Irganoxes was found to provide a noticeable enhancement in durability to the (ABS/PC + lubricant) system. Titanium dioxide pigments by themselves have only a slight influence on the oxidative stability of the ABS/PC blend. Durability of the (ABS/PC + pigment) and (ABS/PC + lubricant) systems was found to be the same and the overall protective effect of Irganox 1076 was similar in both the (ABS/PC + lubricant) and the (ABS/PC + lubricant + pigment) systems. Certain modifiers significantly improve the durability of the ABS/PC compounds, although their function may differ in the systems with and without pigments.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of lubricants, UV stabilizers, antioxidants, and metal deactivators on the resistance of ABS to thermal oxidation was studied by means of the chemiluminescence technique. Neither of the additives seems to affect significantly the induction period of oxidation. At the same time, the influence of various additives on the oxidation rate constant is remarkably different: the introduction of lubricants and UV stabilizers increases its value, while antioxidants and metal deactivators have the opposite effect. For the particular systems studied durability is decreased in samples containing the lubricant and UV stabilizers and increased in samples stabilized with the antioxidant and metal deactivator.

    Notes: Abstract Symmetry properties of positive solutions of a Dirichlet problem for a strongly nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation in a symmetric domainD ⊂ R n are considered. It is assumed that the domainD and the equation are invariant with respect to a group {Q} of transformations ofD. In examples {Q} consists of reflections or rotations. The main result of the paper is the theorem which states that any compact inC(D) negatively invariant set which consists of positive functions consists ofQ-symmetric functions. Examples of negatively invariant sets are (in autonomous case) equilibrium points, omega-limit sets, alpha-limit sets, unstable sets of invariant sets, and global attractors. Application of the main theorem to equilibrium points gives the Gidas-Ni-Nirenberg theorem. Applying the theorem to omega-limit sets, we obtain the asymptotical symmetrization property. That means that a bounded solutionu(t) asr→∞ approaches subspace of symmetric functions. One more result concerns properties of eigenfunctions of linearizations of the equations at positive equilibrium points. It is proved that all unstable eigenfunctions are symmetric.

    Notes: Abstract Bifurcation and continuation techniques are introduced as a class of methods for investigating the parametric nonlinear programming problem. Motivated by the Fritz John first-order necessary conditions, the parametric programming problem is first reformulated as a closed system of nonlinear equations which contains all Karush-Kuhn-Tucker and Fritz John points, both feasible and infeasible solutions, and relative minima, maxima, and saddle points. Since changes in the structure of the solution set and critical point type can occur only at singularities, necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a singularity are developed in terms of the loss of a complementarity condition, the linear dependence constraint qualification, and the singularity of the Hessian of the Lagrangian on a tangent space. After a brief introduction to elementary bifurcation theory, some simple singularities in this parametric problem are analyzed for both branching and persistence of local minima. Finally, a brief introduction to numerical continuation and bifurcation procedures is given to indicate how these facts can be used in a numerical investigation of the problem.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we analyze a simple free boundary model associated with solid combustion and some phase transition processes. There is strong evidence that this “one-phase” model captures all major features of dynamical behavior of more realistic (and complicated) combustion and phase transition models. The principal results concern the dynamical behavior of the model as a bifurcation parameter (which is related to the activation energy in the case of combustion) varies. We prove that the basic uniform front propagation is asymptotically stable against perturbations for the bifurcation parameter above the instability threshold and that a Hopf bifurcation takes place at the threshold value. Results of numerical simulations are presented which confirm that both supercritical and subcritical Hofp bifurcation may occur for physically reasonable nonlinear kinetic functions.

    Notes: Abstract The stability and convergence of the solutions of perturbed and regularized variational inequality to the solutions of the primary (unstable a priori) variational inequality with proper monotone operator are investigated. All the objects of inequality: the operatorA, the right-hand partf and the set of constrains Ω are to be perturbed. At the same time no assumptions of boundedness and smoothness of the operatorA are used. The connection between the parameters of perturbations, which guarantees strong convergence of approximate solutions, is established. It is proved that the existence of the solution to the unperturbed variational inequality is necessary and sufficient condition for convergence of the regularized perturbed inequality solutions.

    Notes: Abstract A new approach to the study of delay systems, applicable to physiological control systems and other systems where little information about the time delays is available, is examined. The method is based on the fact that stability information can be deduced from the statistical properties of the probability distribution that encodes the structure of the time delay. The main statistical variables used are the usual expectation parameter,E, and a modified variance, calledrelative variance and denotedR, that is invariant under time scale changes. Recent work of the author has shown that stability often improves asR increases whileE remains fixed. A four-parameter family of delay models is analysed in this paper, and the (E, R) pair is found to be a reliable indicator of stability over the global parameter domain of the family.

    Notes: Abstract The Newton form is a convenient representation for interpolation polynomials. Its sensitivity to perturbations depends on the distribution and ordering of the interpolation points. The present paper bounds the growth of the condition number of the Newton form when the interpolation points are Leja points for fairly general compact sets K in the complex plane. Because the Leja points are defined recursively, they are attractive to use with the Newton form. If K is an interval, then the Leja points are distributed roughly like Chebyshev points. Our investigation of the Newton form defined by interpolation at Leja points suggests an ordering scheme for arbitrary interpolation points.

    Notes: Abstract This paper deals with adapting Runge-Kutta methods to differential equations with a lagging argument. A new interpolation procedure is introduced which leads to numerical processes that satisfy an important asymptotic stability condition related to the class of testproblemsU′(t)=λU(t)+μU(t−τ) with λ, μ ε C, Re(λ)〈−|μ|, and τ〉0. Ifc i denotes theith abscissa of a given Runge-Kutta method, then in thenth stept n−1→t n :=t n−1+h of the numerical process our interpolation procedure computes an approximation toU(t n−1+c i h−τ) from approximations that have already been generated by the process at pointst j−1+c i h(j=1,2,3,...). For two of these new processes and a standard process we shall consider the convergence behaviour in an actual application to a given, stiff problem.

    Notes: Abstract It is argued that even for a linear system of ODEs with constant coefficients, stiffness cannot properly be characterized in terms of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian, because stiffness is a transient phenomenon whereas the significance of eigenvalues is asymptotic. Recent theory from the numerical solution of PDEs is adapted to show that a more appropriate characterization can be based upon pseudospectra instead of spectra. Numerical experiments with an adaptive ODE solver illustrate these findings.

    Notes: Abstract A new approach to the integration of vertex singularities is described. This approach is based on a non-uniform subdivision of the region of integration and the technique fits well to the subdivision strategy used in many adaptive algorithms. A nice feature with this approach is that it can be used in any dimension and on any region of integration which can be subdivided into subregions of the same form. The strategy can be applied both to vertex singularities and internal point singularities. In the latter case this can be done without an initial subdivision of the region in order to put the singular point in a vertex. It turns out that the technique has excellent numerical stability properties.

Es ist zu erwarten, daß die Stabilitätsregionen mit wachsendem Zeithorizont schrumpfen und daß sie in diesem Sinne monoton sind. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden verschiedene hinreichende Bedingungen für diese Monotonie untersucht. Die Bedingungen setzen unter anderem die Existenz von Planungs- und Vorhersage-Horizonten voraus und verallgemeinern so Ergebnisse einer früheren Arbeit, in der Aussagen für gewöhnliche Planungs-Horizonte vorgestellt wurden.
    Notes: Abstract The set of cost inputs for which an optimal solution of the dynamic lot size model remains valid is called stability region. The size of this region may be viewed as a measure of robustness of a solution. It is an expectation that the stability regions shrink with growing time horizons and that they are monotonous in this sense. In the present paper several sufficient conditions implying monotonicity will be studied. The conditions cover the existence of planning and forecast horizons and generalize the results of a previous paper in wich monotonicity results were presented for the case of ordinary planning horizons.

    Notes: Abstract This paper explores two practical issues related to the force control of manipulators. The first issue examined is how system stability is effected by commonly occurring manipulator nonlinearities, such as sampled-data, control signal saturation and slip-stick friction. It is shown that discretely implemented force control algorithms can drive the feedback force controlled manipulator into a limit cycle, even for a very small sampling period that by far satisfies Shannon's sampling theorem. The bounds of stability are enhanced by the presence of control signal saturation and slip stick friction. The second issue investigated is the inclusion of a high gain inner position loop as a means to minimize the unpredictability in the steady state error due to slip-stick friction. In order to support the theoretical conclusions, experiments were performed with the PUMP 560 industrial robot testbed facility developed at Colorado State University.

    Notes: Summary After a review of the existing state of affairs, an improvement is made in the stability theory for solitary-wave solutions of evolution equations of Korteweg-de Vries-type modelling the propagation of small-amplitude long waves. It is shown that the bulk of the solution emerging from initial data that is a small perturbation of an exact solitary wave travels at a speed close to that of the unperturbed solitary wave. This not unexpected result lends credibility to the presumption that the solution emanating from a perturbed solitary wave consists mainly of a nearby solitary wave. The result makes use of the existing stability theory together with certain small refinements, coupled with a new expression for the speed of propagation of the disturbance. The idea behind our result is also shown to be effective in the context of one-dimensional regularized long-wave equations and multidimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

    Notes: Summary In this paper we rigorously show the existence and smoothness inε of traveling wave solutions to a periodic Korteweg-deVries equation with a Kuramoto-Sivashinsky-type perturbation for sufficiently small values of the perturbation parameterε. The shape and the spectral transforms of these traveling waves are calculated perturbatively to first order. A linear stability theory using squared eigenfunction bases related to the spectral theory of the KdV equation is proposed and carried out numerically. Finally, the inverse spectral transform is used to study the transient and asymptotic stages of the dynamics of the solutions.

    Notes: Summary Contractile actomyosin systems play a central role in the generation of intracellular patterns. Models for pattern formation have benefited greatly from the application of mechanochemical theory. However, investigations of the patterns have been primarily qualitative in nature; the two-dimensional nature of the evolving patterns has not yet been addressed mathematically, nor has the evolution of stable heterogeneous steady-state solutions. We consider these issues, supporting our analytical predictions with numerical simulations in one and two spatial dimensions. We show how, for certain gels, the two and three-dimensional tensor equation which describes a balance of forces can be reduced to a reaction-diffusion equation.

    Notes: Summary Engineering and physical systems are often modeled as nonlinear differential equations with a vector λ of parameters and operated at a stable equilibrium. However, as the parameters λ vary from some nominal value λ0, the stability of the equilibrium can be lost in a saddle-node or Hopf bifurcation. The spatial relation in parameter space of λ0 to the critical set of parameters at which the stable equilibrium bifurcates determines the robustness of the system stability to parameter variations and is important in applications. We propose computing a parameter vector λ* at which the stable equilibrium bifurcates which is locally closest in parameter space to the nominal parameters λ0. Iterative and direct methods for computing these locally closest bifurcations are described. The methods are extensions of standard, one-parameter methods of computing bifurcations and are based on formulas for the normal vector to hypersurfaces of the bifurcation set. Conditions on the hypersurface curvature are given to ensure the local convergence of the iterative method and the regularity of solutions of the direct method. Formulas are derived for the curvature of the saddle node bifurcation set. The methods are extended to transcritical and pitchfork bifurcations and parametrized maps, and the sensitivity to λ0 of the distance to a closest bifurcation is derived. The application of the methods is illustrated by computing the proximity to the closest voltage collapse instability of a simple electric power system.

    Notes: Abstract A survey is presented of estimates for a norm of matrix-valued and operator-valued functions obtained by the author. These estimates improve the Gel'fand-Shilov estimate for regular functions of matrices and Carleman's estimates for resolvents of matrices and compact operators. From the estimates for resolvents, the well-known result for spectrum perturbations of self-adjoint operators is extended to quasi-Hermitian operators. In addition, the classical Schur and Brown's inequalities for eigenvalues of matrices are improved. From estimates for the exponential function (semigroups), bounds for solution norms of nonlinear differential equations are derived. These bounds give the stability criteria which make it possible to avoid the construction of Lyapunov functions in appropriate situations.

    Notes: Abstract The deterministic dynamics of the classical single-locus multiple-allele model of gametophytic incompatibility is analyzed with the intention to prove the conjecture that the symmetric state (uniform distribution of genotypes) is the only polymorphic equilibrium and that this equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable in the interior of the frequency simplex. It is shown that the minimum allelic frequency increases strictly over the generations as long as a uniform allelic distribution is not realized. Hence, the minimum allelic frequency is a Ljapunov function for the invariant set of genotypic frequencies characterized by a uniform allelic distribution. Within this set, the uniform genotypic distribution is approached in an exponential fashion, which proves the assertion. An evolutionary optimization rule associated with the global convergence to the symmetric state is implied by the fact that at this state the overall amount of pollen elimination resulting from incompatible crosses is minimized.

    Notes: Abstract By the modified three-field Hu-Washizu principle, this paper establishes a theoretical foundation and general convenient formulations to generate convergent stable generalized hybrid/mixed element (GH/ME) model which is invariant with respect to coordinate, insensitive to geometric distortion and suitable for improved stress computation. In the two proposed formulations, the stress equilibrium and orthogonality constraints are imposed through incompatible displacement and internal strain modes respectively. The proposed model by the general formulations in this paper is characterized by including assumed stress/strain, assumed stress, variable-node, singular, compatible and incompatible GH/ME models. When using regular meshes or the constant values of the isoparametric Jacobian Det in the assumed strain interpolation, the incompatible GH/ME model degenerates to the hybrid/mixed element model. Both general and concrete guidelines for the optimal selection of element shape functions are suggested. By means of the GH/ME theory in this paper, a family of new GH/ME can be and have been easily constructed. The software can also be developed conveniently because all the standard subroutines for the corresponding isoparametric displacement elements can be utilized directly.

    Notes: Abstract The post yield behavior of rigid-perfectly plastic solids at the collapse load is studied based on the finite deformation theory. By using the general duality theory developed by Gao-Strang (1989), a global stability criteria is proposed and a pair of dual extremum principles, expressed in terms of displacements, displacement rates and the Kirchhoff stresses are established for plastic collapse analysis. It is proved that under large deformations, the existence of the plastic limit state at the collapse load depends on the directional derivative of a so-called complementary gap function. The application to the nonlinear plastic collapse theory yields a pair of dual bounding theorems for limit loading factor associated with any transient displacement of the deformed body when the global extremum criteria are satisfied.

    Notes: Abstract W/O gel-emulsions (high-internal-phase-volume-ratio emulsions) form in water (or brine) /tetraethyleneglycol dodecyl ether/heptane system above the HLB (hydrophile-lipophile balance) temperature of the system. A salt, which largely decreases cloud temperature in a water-nonionic surfactant system, makes the surfactant film rigid and the gel-emulsions hence become very stable. The effect of aded salt on the apparent order parameter “S”, and the isotropic hyperfine splitting constant “a N” in gel-emulsions was determined by the ESR spin probe method using 5-doxyl stearic acid as the spin probe. The apparent order parameter “S”, and the isotropic hyperfine splitting constant “a N” increase with increasing salinity in Na2SO4, CaCl2, and NaCl systems. It is considered that the surfactant molecules are tightly packed in these systems and this tendency is highly related to the stability of gel-emulsions. The salt dehydrates the hydrophilic moiety of surfactant and hence the lateral interactions of surfactant molecular layer at the water-oil interface increases. The observed difference in the apparent order parameter between the ordinary emulsions and the gel-emulsions suggests that most of the surfactant molecules are adsorbed at the oil-water interface (the surface of the water droplet) in gel-emulsions.

    Notes: Abstract Cholesterol colloids stabilised by Tween 20 (Colloid I), SDS-Et4 NBr (Colloid II), and CTAB-Nac (Colloid III) were prepared. Moving boundary electrophoresis established Colloid III to be positively charged with a zeta potential of 12.2 mV. Addition of 5 mmol dm−3 Na2SO4 and 0.1 mmol dm−3 bilirubin dye (Na-salt) decreased the zeta potential to 9.7 mV and 9.5 mV, respectively, by screening the surface charge of the colloidal particles. Higher concentrations of Na2SO4 and bilirubin (Na-salt) made making electrophoretic measurements difficult, and such a situation was also faced in the case of Colloid II even without external addition of an electrolyte. Addition of several electrolytes revealed that Colloids II and II were coagulated by the neutralisation of their positive charge, but Colloid I was destabilised by salting-out effect. Measured intrinsic viscosity values and electron microscopic measurements supported overall spherical shape of the colloid particles. Colloid II exibited structural viscosity; higher concentration of NaSO4 decreased the viscosities of Colloid II and II by electroviscous effect which helped indirect determination of the electrokinetic potential (23.7 mV) of Colloid II.

    Notes: Abstract The stability of thermoreversible microgel particles of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) having carboxylate surface charge groups has been studied in the presence of electrolyte and non-adsorbing polymer. Methylation of the surface charge groups leads to a decrease in the electrophoretic mobility of the particles and also the interparticle electrostatic repulsive potential, resulting in the material becoming more susceptible to flocculation. The Hamaker constant of the microgel particles increases with the decrease in the hydrodynamic size of the particles following heating. This brings about an increase in the van der Waals attractive energy which results in the particles aggregating in the presence of sufficient electrolyte. Under conditions of flow through membranes, where shearing forces are operative, the flocculation observed following the heating of the dispersions results in the blockage of pores.

    Notes: Abstract A one-dimensional, nonlinear problem of reproductive toxic mass spreading is studied in this paper. The nonlinearity is due to the difference of the reproduction rates in the toxic region and the nontoxic region. Multiple steady state solutions are found and their stability and instability are proved. Due to the instability, there may exist turning points (also called saddle-node bifurcation points), at which an infinitesimal perturbation of some parameters may cause a catastrophic change in the location of the steady state toxic front (the interface of the toxic region and the nontoxic region). For the time dependent case, the propagation of the toxic front is considered. An integral equation is derived to determine the propagation of the toxic front. Some numerical results are found for a specific example.

    Notes: Abstract An important (some say, the major) reason for using feedback control is the presence of uncertain parameters which are a natural part of any real dynamical model. In this paper, we consider uncertain constant parameters in a time-invariant linear plant and announce some new results concerning robust compensator synthesis. Using the min-max principle, we derive necessary conditions for fixed-order linear robust controllers assuring asymptotic stability or relative stability. These necessary conditions are an extension of the Lagrange multiplier method. This is achieved using a cost function based on the inverse of the so-called critical constraint. We present both matrix and polynomial versions; the latter allows controllers of fixed structure. We suggest a probability-one homotopy algorithm and solve some examples from the literature.

The formulas for critical external pressure are obtained by using the potential energy variation principle. Very good agreement is shown between the theoretical prediction of critical external pressure and the experimental data. Finally, the influence of some parameters on critical external pressure is discussed numerically. This stability property encourages the development of approximation techniques for solving such equations. One such technique, involving the backward solution of an approximate functional equation as a prediction step, followed by a forward reconstruction using true equations as a correction step, is then discussed. Bounds for the errors arising from such an approximation procedure are derived. Successive approximations is suggested, in conclusion, as a means for obtaining improved solutions.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with a class of noncooperative games ofn players that are defined byn reward functions which depend continuously on the action variables of the players. This framework provides a realistic model of many interactive situations, including many common models in economics, sociology, engineering, and political science. The concept of Nash equilibrium is a suitable companion to such models. A variety of different sufficient conditions for existence, uniqueness, and stability of a Nash equilibrium point have been previously proposed. By sharpening the noncooperative aspect of the framework (which is really only implicit in the original framework), this paper attempts to isolate one set of “natural” conditions that are sufficient for existence, uniqueness, and stability. It is argued thatl ∞ quasicontraction is such a natural condition. The concept of complete stability is introduced to reflect the full character of noncooperation. It is then shown that, in the linear case, the condition ofl ∞ quasicontraction is both necessary and sufficient for complete stability.

    Notes: Abstract The optimization problem of a nonlinear real function over the weakly-efficient set associated to a nonlinear multi-objective program is examined. Necessary first-order conditions for a suboptimal solution are proposed, assuming the convexity of the multi-objective program. Estimations of the optimal value are established and an algorithm for finding suboptimal solutions is proposed. The optimal value is approximated to any prescribed degree of accuracy using a weakly-efficient suboptimal solution.

    Notes: Abstract This paper investigates the closedness and convexity of the range sets of the variational inequality (VI) problem defined by an affine mappingM and a nonempty closed convex setK. It is proved that the range set is closed ifK is the union of a polyhedron and a compact convex set. Counterexamples are given such that the range set is not closed even ifK is a simple geometrical figure such as a circular cone or a circular cylinder in a three-dimensional space. Several sufficient conditions for closedness and convexity of the range set are presented. Characterization for the convex hull of the range set is established in the case whereK is a cone, while characterization for the closure of the convex hull of the range set is established in general. Finally, some applications to stability of VI problems are derived.

    Notes: Abstract Relations between different notions of well-posedness of constrained optimization problems are studied. A characterization of the class of metric spaces in which Hadamard, strong, and Levitin-Polyak well-posedness of continuous minimization problems coincide is given. It is shown that the equivalence between the original Tikhonov well-posedness and the ones above provides a new characterization of the so-called Atsuji spaces. Generalized notions of well-posedness, not requiring uniqueness of the solution, are introduced and investigated in the above spirit.

We do not assume that the unique solution of the original problem satisfies any qualification hypothesis. We suppose instead that the direction of perturbation satisfies the hypothesis of Gollan.     Notes: Abstract A methodology is first presented for analyzing long time response of periodically exited nonlinear oscillators. Namely, a systematic procedure is employed for determining periodic steady state response, including harmonic and superharmonic components. The stability analysis of the located periodic motions is also performed, utilizing results of Froquet theory. This methodology is then applied to a special class of two degree of freedom nonlinear oscillators, subjected to harmonic excitation. The numberical results presented in the second part of this study illustrate effects caused by the interaction of the modes as well as effects of the nonlinearities on the steady state response of these oscillators. In addition, sequences of bifurcations are analyzed for softening systems, leading to unbounded response of the model examined. Finally, the importance of higher harmonics on the response of systems with strongly nonlinear characteristics is investigated.

    Notes: Abstract The stability and control characteristics of two twin-lift helicopter configurations are analyzed in this paper. In order to address the issue of configuration selection from a handling qualities viewpoint, their open-and closed-loop characteristics are compared. The two twin-lift configurations considered are the twin-lift with spreader bar and twin-lift without spreader bar. The nonlinear models describing the dynamics of these two configurations in the lateral/vertical plane are derived. The open-loop characteristics of the two systems are compared by linearizing the nonlinear models about a symmetric hovering equilibrium condition. The closed-loop characteristics of the two systems are compared using nonlinear controllers based on feedback linearization schemes. The performance of the resulting closed-loop systems in carrying out a typical twin-lift mission is evaluated through nonlinear simulation.     Notes: Abstract The dynamic stability and self-excited posteritical whirling of rotating transversally loaded shaft made of a standard material with elastic and viscous nonlinearities are analyzed in this paper using the theory of bifurcations as a mathematical tool. Partial differential equations of motion are derived under assumption that von Karman's nonlinearity is absent but geometric curvature nonlinearity is included. Galerkin's first-mode discretization procedure is then applied and the equations of motion are transformed to two third-order nonlinear equations that are analyzed using the theory of bifurcation. Condition for nontrivial equilibrium stability is determined and a bifurcating periodic solution of the second-order approximation is derived. The effects of dimensionless stress relaxation time and cubic elastic and viscous nonlinearities as well as the role of the transverse load are studied in the exemplary numerical calculations. A strongly stabilizing influence of the relaxation time is found that may eliminate self-excited vibration at all. Transition from super- to subcritical bifurcation is observed as a result of interaction between system nonlinearities and the transverse load.

    Notes: Abstract Nonlinear rotors are often considered as potential sources of chaotic vibrations. The aim of the present paper is that of studying in detail the behaviour of a nonlinear isotropic Jeffcott rotor, representing the simplest nonlinear rotor. The restoring and damping forces have been expanded in Taylor series obtaining a ‘Duffing-type’ equation. The isotropic nature of the system allows circular whirling to be a solution at all rotational speeds. However there are ranges of rotational speed in which this solution is unstable and other, more complicated, solutions exist. The conditions for stability of circular whirling are first studied from closed form solutions of the mathematical model and then the conditions for the existence of solutions of other type are studied by numerical experimentation. Although attractors of the limit cycle type are often found, chaotic attractors were identified only in few very particular cases. An attractor supposedly of the last type reported in the literature was found, after a detailed analysis, to be related to a nonchaotic polyharmonic solution.     Notes: Abstract In the analysis of multibody dynamics, we are often required to deal with singularity problems where the constraint Jacobian matrix may become less than full rank at some instantancous configurations. This creates numerical instability which will affect the performance of the mechanical system. A modification procedure of the constraints when they vanish or become linearly dependent is proposed to regularize the dynamics of the system. A distinction between the asymptotic stability due to the representation of the constraints (at the velocity and acceleration level), and the one due to the singularity is discussed in full in this paper. It is shown that Baumgarte technique could be extended to accommodate the representation of the constraints in the neighborhood of singularity. A two link planar manipulator undergoing large motion and passing through a singular configuration is used to illustrate the proposed stability technique.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, the planar dynamics of a nonlinearly constrained pipe conveying fluid is examined numerically, by considering the full nonlinear equation of motions and a refined trilinear-spring model for the impact constraints—completing the circle of several studies on the subject. The effect of varying system parameters is investigated for the two-degree-of-freedom (N=2) model of the system, followed by less extensive similar investigations forN=3 and 4. Phase portraits, bifurcation diagrams, power spectra and Lyapunov exponents are presented for a selected set of system parameters, showing some rather interesting, and sometimes unexpected, results. The numerical results are compared with experimental ones obtained previously. It is found that in the parameter space that includesN, there exists a subspace wherein excellent qualitative, and reasonably good (N=2) to excellent (N=4) quantitative agreement with experiment. In the latter case, excellent agreement is not only obtained in the threshold flow velocities (u) for the key bifurcations, but the inclusion of the nonlinear terms improves agreement with experiment in terms of amplitudes of motion and by capturing features of behaviour not hitherto predicted by theory.

    Notes: Abstract The linear stability of the Poiseuille flow of multi-layered different fluids, described mathematically by a system of Orr-Somerfeld differential equations, is investigated. A spectral method is used to rewrite this system into a generalized eigenvalue problem, which can be solved with the QZ-algorithm. Special attention is paid to the tractibility of the interfacial conditions of the stability problem. Since we will limit ourselves to a linear stability analysis, the analytical treatment of the interfacial conditions is simplified. Some results related to simple flow configurations are presented. The origin of certain regions of interfacial instability is explained by simple analytical reasoning.
