Notizen: In this paper the traditional square mesh 2D-TLM algorithm is generalized for rectangular meshes of arbitrary aspect ratio. It is shown that the anisotropic rectangular TLM network can be conceived in such a way that the propagation vector remains independent of the direction of propagation in the infinitesimal approximation. A full dispersion analysis of the rectangular mesh in then performed for the general case, and results are compared to that of the traditional square mesh.

Notizen: The radiation field patterns of rectangular waveguides and horns of finite dimensions are obtained numerically. The electric field integral equation is formulated to relate their radiation patterns to the surface current distribution. These currents are determined numerically by reducing the integral equation to a matrix equation, using the moment method. The computed currents are then used to calculate the radiation patterns and cross-polar fields of the finite wavegiudes and horns. The method is numerically efficient and can be applied to the computation and optimization of the antenna feed configurations.

Notizen: Ray-besed methods have been previously developed for accurately predicting the electromagnetic scattering from cavity interiors that allowed for realistic modelling of complex cavities such as jet engine inlets. An analytic geometric model is developed for bifurcated cavities based on connecting sections of generalized super-ellipse functions. The electromagnetic scattering from such cavities using the ‘shooting and bouncing rays’ (SBR) method is discussed.

Notizen: A theoretical analysis has been developed to study the crosstalk in crossed bundles of parallel lines. The model is based on the theory of the coupled transmission lines and the resulting system of differential equations has been solved by means of the finite difference, time-domain (FDTD) method. The frequency response of the network has been achieved by the discrete fourier transform (DFT) algorithm; measurements, performed with a vectorial network analyser, show a good agreement with numerical simulation.

Notizen: The eigenmodes in electromagnetic cavities, loaded with arbitrarily shaped dielectric materials, are computed by the edge element method. The computation shows that the well known ‘spurious modes’ no longer appear. Formulae are given and verified so that the number of zero eigenvalues, which come from ∇ × H = 0, may be accurately predicted. Formulae for the order and density of the global matrices are given for a rectangular cavity regularly divided into bricks and tetrahedra, allowing an associated comparison between the contrasting edge and nodal element formulations. Comparison of the computed results with available theoretical and previously published data show the edge element approach to be a robust, accurate and effective method.

Notizen: A numerical frequence-domain modelling of two-terminal, non-linear microwave circuits is presented. It basically relies on a process allowing the solution of the frequency-domain curcuit harmonic balance equations while accounting for the semiconductor device by means of an accurate numerical macroscopic physical model. In its present state of development, the model allows the study of a single two-terminal device circuit operating in harmonic mode. Its capabilites are illustrated by means of the results of a study devoted to the optimization of the load curcuit configuration of a millimetre-wave avalanche diode frequency multiplier. The influence of the output load impedance level on the circuit output RF performance has been investigated for different input power levels in direct frequency multiplication mode and in the presence of additional circuit tunings at low harmonic rank idler frequencies.

Notizen: This paper describes a rigorous and systematic procedure to derive a non-linear distributed FET model that an easily be implemented in CAD routines of simulators based on harmonic balance techniques. The new model is derived from a knowldge of the conventional linear lumped equivalent circuit, from non-linear current sources extracted with pulsed measurements, and from the physical dimensions of the FET.For fundamental and haromonic requencies, the FET is modelled by N identical cells. Each cell is made up of a non-linear two-port section inserted between two linear four-port sections that simulate the coupling and the distributed effects along the electrodes of the FET in the width direction only. This non-linear distributed scaling approach to FET modelling has been applied to the analysis of a submicrometre-gate GaAs FET at Millimetre-wave frequencies, and the results were compared to the non-linear lumped element approach. This approach can be applied to other transistors used in non-linear regions at microwave and millimetre-wave frequencies.

Notizen: Symbolic computational systems introduce some unique features in computational engineering. There have been several papers published on the solution of differential equations under given boundary conditions by symbolic systems. The finite element formalism has received prime attention in the course of development of symbolic computation in engineering. The main idea has been to develop a symbolic FEM package to reduce the burden of manual algebra, eliminate errors introduced by numerical quadrature, and improve the efficiency of element generation. This work discusses a symbolic solution to electromagnetic linear antenna problems. The solution is a method of moments that transforms Pocklington's integral equation to a matrix equation. The symbolic system is used to produce (1) analytical integration, (2) the parametric expression for the input impedance and (3) computational code for forward and reverse problem of the input impedance.

Notizen: This paper presents a new finite element formulation in the Laplace domain for both diffusion and wave equations with applications in the field of electrical engineering. With the aid of congruence transformation of matrices, the finite element equations in the Laplace domain are solved and time-domain results can be obtained through the inverse Laplace transform. In a test problem, good agreement between the numerical results derived with the present method and the analytical solutions has been found. For applications in which only Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are involved, this new finite element approach can be applied and provide both frequency-domain and time-domain results in one run without any timestepping scheme. The limitations of using the congruence transformation in solving propagation problems are also addressed in this paper.

Notizen: A hybrid method obtained as a combination of the coupled-mode method (CMM) and the mode-matching method (MMM) is developed and applied in the analysis of multiple dielectric and magnetic discontinuities in rectangular waveguides. As both are moment methods, some kind of truncation has to be carried out in the computer implementation. It is shown that selection of a different number of modes in the two methods is not necessary, unless low-permittivity meida inside the waveguide are considered. As a consequence, the procedure for slecting the number of basis functions is only done in one of the methods. Numerical examples are presented showing the behaviour of the method and the proofs of convergence. Examples are included illustrating the power of this hybrid technique, especially in relation to non-reciprocal structures containing magnetized ferrites.

Notizen: This paper describes the application of the boundary element method to solving two-dimensional steady slow viscous flow problems (creeping flow) in thermal silicon oxidation. The proposed method used the velocity-pressure formulation. The use of the incompressibility condition as a boundary condition and the application of the second Green's identity to transform the domain integral into a boundary integral result in a system of three boundary integral equations for velocity components and pressure. Solution of this system to be an ill-posed problem because of the presence of boundary conditions of the first kind. Two methods of regularization are employed. The numerical results for trench oxidation process are presented.

Notizen: The particle-in-cell method is coupled with boundary-fitted co-ordinates in order to model the stationary Maxwell-Lorentz problem in technical devices. New numerical algorithms describing the transition between the grid model and the mesh-free model are developed and the existing techniques of finite difference schemes for equidistant grids are extended to non-equidistant, arbitrarily shaped, convex four-point meshes. The modelling process is described, and both the numerical approximation and the algorithms are discussed. Applications in different technical devices show the flexibility of the method.

Notizen: Series function expansion algorithms of the time-domain analysis of boundary value problems are discussed. Electromagnetic fields inside a structure under investigation are expanded into series of basis functions and the expansion coefficients are found by means of the Galerkin method. The numerical cost of algorithms is discussed and a cost efficient approach is proposed for formulations using sine and cosine expansion functions. Compared with conventional time-domain methods the algorithms described show the time evolution of the expansion coefficients rather than the samples of a physical continuum at discrete nodes.

Notizen: A rigorous technique for studying a thin wire circular loop antenna excited by a magnetic frill is developed. The exact kernel is derived and used to improve the accuracy. The scheme is applicable to small as well as large loops. Results obtained are nearly indistinguishable from those determined by the Fourier expansion method for non-resonant loops. A disagreement of 2 per cent is generally observed when the loop is close to reasonant for βb 〉 2. Compared with the conventional numerical method where a loop is represented by a polygon of straight wires, the present scheme is much faster and more accurate. Extension of this method to cover an antenna system of arbitrarily oriented loops intermingled with straight wires can be easily achieved.

Notizen: Simulation results for a n+-n-n+ two-valley semiconductor device obtained by use of a shock capturing numerical agorithm are presented. The one-dimensional problem is modelled by two systems of Euler equations connected by their source terms, and the Poisson equation. The resulting system of seven equations is hyperbolic and non-linear, and it is a great problem to find an adequate numerical approximation of its time-dependent discontinuities. There are additional complications due to the stiffness of the source terms. The numerical method used in this paper is first-order acurate in time but of high spatial order in regions of smoothness. Before the method is applied, the system has to be transformed to a characteristic form. The adopted shock capturing algorithm enables the choice of the order of the accuracy by the appropriate choice of the reconstruction polynomial. Reconstructions of the second and fourth order are tested and some numerical results are presented. Because of the stiffness of the source terms, the sixth-order accurate scheme breaks down. The results presented, and especially the response obtained of the structure to the step and periodic applied voltage, prove the correctness of the used schemes.

Notizen: An algorithm is developed to evaluate the responses of discontinuous coplanar strip-lines excited by external electromagnetic fields. The algorithm uses the cascade chain matrix method which employs the distributed circuit parameters to model the external field coupling to the line and it is applicable to most commonly encountered discontinuities in microwave integrated circuit interconnects on lossy substrates. A general CAD program is developed based on this model and it is applied to realistic coplanar strip-line interconnections with geometric and resistive discontinuities to illustrate the capabilities of the algorithm. These interconnect models are selected from a practical microwave integrated circuit design. Simplicity and fast speed of the algorithm enable computer-aided analysis of externally induced electromagnetic noise in integrated circuits to be carried out. The effects of dielectric losses in the integrated circuit substrates and the discontinuities in the conducting tracks on the wave coupling are investigated in isolation.

Notizen: The finite element method (FEM) with local absorbing boundary conditions has been recently applied to compute electromagnetic scattering from large 3-D geometries. In this paper, we present details pertaining to code implementation and optimization. Various types of sparse matrix storage schemes are discussed and their performance is examined in terms of vectorization and net storage requirements. The system of linear equations is solved using a preconditioned biconjugate gradient (BCG) algorithm and a fairly detailed study of existing point and block preconditioners (diagonal and incomplete LU) is carried out. A modified ILU preconditioning scheme is also introducted which works better than the traditional version for our matrix systems. The parallelization of the iterative sparse solver and the matrix generation/assembly as implemented on the KSR1 multiprocessor is described and the interprocessor communication patterns are analysed in detail. Near-linear speed-up is obtained for both the iterative solver and the matrix generation/assembly phases. Results are presented for a problem having 224,476 unknowns and validated by comparison with measured data.

The technique leads to the solution of linear systems with full matrices of dimension 1000-10,000 for medium- and large-sized three-dimensional problems, An efficient solution procedure of the linear systems is required. While the iterative solution of the large and sparse linear systems arising from the finite difference or the finite element method is well documented, the systems resulting from the boundary element method are typically solved by direct methods. However, in many cases an iterative solver needs far fewer operations to achieve a sufficient accuracy. Importantly, there are many alternative methods, each of them well suited for different types of problem. Here, we provide an overview of state-of-the-art iterative solvers. We will discuss the particular methods that have been successfully applied to systems arising from field calculations in the high-voltage engineering by the boundary element method. The selection of appropriate methods is discussed. We demonstrate that iterative solutions can be much faster than direct solvers with regards to the number of operations. Furthermore, these solvers are optimally suited for today's supercomputers because they can be efficiently vectorized and parallelized.

Notizen: This paper provides details of a widely applicable technique of hybrid modelling of thermal and particle diffusion which can help to reduce computational load in explicit formulation. The undesirable effects of artificial boundaries, which are introduced when a simulation is truncated or when an expanding mesh is used, can be eliminated by the use of discrete Green's functions. The technique can also be applied to problems involving infinite or near-infinite domains or problems where a complex thermal region is embedded within a larger, more simply described domain.

Notizen: A convex hexahedral TLM mesh of arbitrary shape is presented and the transmission-line matrix method extended to any non-orthogonal configuration. The novel mesh constitutes a natural generalization of Johns' condensed node. The associated TLM process is analysed and reconstructed as a genuine finite difference time-domain algorithm. Nodal S-parameters are derived from discretized Maxwell's equations and canonical stability criteria yield the TLM timestep. Unitarity is discussed and energy conservation confirmed in the non-conductive case.A given block-diagonal representation of the S-matrix restrains processing time per node and iteration within the range of traditional methods. The shortcomings of the rigid classical grid, as the need for inaccurate staircasing approximations, are, however, ruled out.Our analysis takes advantage of the recently developed propagator integral approach.

Notizen: The existing treatment of an instantaneous endothermic change of state is extended to deal both with exothermic effects and with first order Arrhenius changes. These extended treatments are used to model complex changes of phase occurring during the firing of ball clay and china clay, both of which are constitutents of the slip used in the production of vitreous china ware. The adequacy of the treatments is investigated for both clays by comparing a TLM simulation of a DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) experiment with measurements made during the experiment.

Notizen: To make possible the application of the three-dimensional finite element method to electrically large problems, it is combined with the analytical solutions of arbitrary large cavity with aperture. In this paper, detailed analysis for this hybrid method is presented. The element matrices necessary for coupling the finite element method to analytical solutions are given. The proposed hybrid method significantly reduces the number of unknown since only the inhomogeneity needs to be discretized. Thus computer memory and storage demands are reduced. In addition. This hybrid method employs the edge element which is not expected to produce spurious solutions. Also, the formulation presented in this paper preserves the sparsity of the finite element matrix, and does not require any matrix inversion. This new hybrid method is used to compute the field distributions in various partially filled rectangular enclosure. The results match well with the pure edgebased finite element method and analytical solutions.

Notizen: The method of effective penetration depth is used to produce a novel scalar or polarized finite difference approach for the solution of optical rib waveguide field problems. The new method is quicker than previous finite difference approaches and requires less computer memory. Propagation constant values are presented for a range of semiconductor rib waveguides and are found to be indistinguishable from benchmark results produced using earlier methods of analysis. A simple polarization correction formula recently derived is confirmed by utilizing the good accuracy of these results. This enables discussion of the relationship between quasi-TE, quasi-TM and scalar modes, and a further substantial reduction of the cpu time.

Notizen: The application of multigrid techniques to the computation of the static solutions of electromagnetic field problems governed by Laplace's equation is described. This technique is compared with the conventional successive over-relaxation (SOR) method for solving finite difference problems. In contrast to SOR, the number of iterations of multigrid needed to achieve convergence is largely independent of the grid size. It is shown that the relative performance of multigrid is excellent on large grids where the number of iterations of SOR needed to achieve convergence becomes prohibitively large. The technique is illustrated by applying a parallel implementation of multigrid to find a quasistatic solution of a boxed microstrip problem.

Notizen: A new approach to efficiently compute the low-frequency eigenmodes of a time-domain model approximating a linear physical system is proposed. The method is based on principles known from digital signal processing, in particular from parametic spectrum estimation, so it is not surprising that the achievable accuracy is much higher than the accuracy of the usual non-parametric discrete Fourier transform approach. The algorithm works in the general lossy case even for a very large number of unknowns and can easily be extended to calculate steady-state solutions under sinusoidal excitations for several different frequencies simultaneously.

Notizen: In this paper we demonstrate the use of differential equations by means of an example from network analysis and show that differential/algebraic equations (DAE), rather than explicit ordinary differential equations (ODE), are more suitable for the description of electrical systems and networks. The main ideas of numerical integration of ODEs are presented. We consider this material from the point of view of replacing the ODE by a difference equation (DE). In particular, the relationship between the ODE and the associated DE is discussed. In the last Section the application of integration methods for OEDs upon DAEs and its difficulties are discussed. The paper is intended as a review; but a few new results are also included.

Notizen: Transverse transmission concepts in the Fourier transmission domain for multilayer planar transmission medium are presented. This complete transverse transmission theory (TTT) is found to be a superset of different Fourier-transform-based numerical techniques widely used in guided wave analysis, namely the modematching method and the spectral-domain approach. The features of the theory are: the expansion of field quantities in longitudinal section (LSE/LSM) modes, the concept of rotation of the transverse field vectors, and a comprehnsive algorithm using recursive matrix standard form. It is shown that the mode-matching method and spectral-domain approach are generally equivalent except for the last step of imposing the final boundary conditions, and can therefore be summarized in a unified theory within the framework of TTT. In addition, a new parameter, the polarization coefficient, has been introduced to describe the field polarization of the guided wave in a quantitative manner. It is believed that the present theory will help us to gain more insight into hybrid mode propagation in multilayer planar circuits.

Notizen: This paper considers the adaptation of drift-diffusion device simulation methodology to study Auger-recombination-induced hot electron transport characteristics in InGaAsP/InP double heterostructure laser diodes. In order to model the transport behaviour of the Auger hot electrons, we decompose the conventional electron current continuity equation into two components, with one for the Auger hot electrons and the other for the low-energy electrons. These equations, which use the energy relaxation time parameter to model the dynamics of the Auger hot electrons, are then coupled with the hole current continuity equation and the Poisson equation to obtain self-consistent solutions. Results from the case studies of one-dimensional N-p-P InGaAsP/InP double heterojunction laser diodes with material composition corresponding to 1·3 μm and 1·55 μm wavelength emissions are presented. We have observed that hot electrons generated through Auger recombination inside the active region can spread into both the N- and the P-InP cladding layers. Within the drift-diffusion framework, it is demonstrated that the hot electron concentration in the N-InP cladding layer can be five orders of magnitude higher than that in the P-InP cladding layer. Because energy transport of the hot electrons in not modelled under the drift-diffusion approximation, the simulated results are discussed to highlight some of the possible limitations in using drift-diffusion physics to study Auger hot electron transport behaviour. The importance of taking energy transport into account is emphasized.

Notizen: We are interested in solving second-order PDEs with multigrid and unstructured meshes. The multigrid strategy we present here is adapted from the generalized finite volume agglomeration multigrid algorithm we have developed recently for the solution of the Euler equations. We now focus on Poisson's equation. A strategy is defined by introducing a correction factor for the diffusive terms, and some illustrating results are given.

Notizen: The formulation of a control-volume-based finite element method (CVFEM) for axisymmetric, two-dimensional, incompressible fluid flow and heat transfer in irregular-shaped domains is presented. The calculation domain is discretized into torus-shaped elements and control volumes. In a longitudinal cross-sectional plane, these elements are three-node triangles, and the control volumes are polygons obtained by joining the centroids of the three-node triangles to the mid-points of the sides. Two different interpolation schemes are proposed for the scalar-dependent variables in the advection terms: a flow-oriented upwind function, and a mass-weighted upwind function that guarantees that the discretized advection terms contribute positively to the coefficients in the discretized equations. In the discretization of diffusion transport terms, the dependent variables are interpolated linearly. An iterative sequential variable adjustment algorithm is used to solve the discretized equations for the velocity components, pressure and other scalar-dependent variables of interest. The capabilities of the proposed CVFEM are demonstrated by its application to four different example problems. The numerical solutions are compared with the results of independent numerical and experimental investigations. These comparisons are quite encouraging.

Notizen: A p-version least squares finite element formulation for non-linear problems is applied to the problem of steady, two-dimensional, incompressible fluid flow. The Navier-Stokes equations are cast as a set of first-order equations involving viscous stresses as auxiliary variables. Both the primary and auxiliary variables are interpolated using equal-order C0 continuity, p-version hierarchical approximation functions. The least squares functional (or error functional) is constructed using the system of coupled first-order non-linear partial differential equations without linearization, approximations or assumptions. The minimization of this least squares error functional results in finding a solution vector {δ} for which the partial derivative of the error functional (integrated sum of squares of the errors resulting from individual equations for the entire discretization) with respect to the nodal degrees of freedom {δ} becomes zero. This is accomplished by using Newton's method with a line search. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the convergence characteristics and accuracy of the method.

Notizen: We develop simulation tools for the non-stationary incompressible 2D Navier--Stokes equations. The most important components of the finite element code are: the fractional step ϑ-scheme, which is of second-order accuracy and strongly A-stable, for the time discretization; a fixed point defect correction method with adaptive step length control for the non-linear problems (stationary Navier-Stokes equations); a modified upwind discretization of higher-order accuracy for the convective terms. Finally, the resulting nonsymmetric linear subproblems are treated by a special multigrid algorithm which is adapted to the quadrilateral non-conforming discretely divergence-free finite elements. For the graphical postprocess we use a fully non-stationary and interactive particle-tracing method. With extensive test calculations we show that our method is a candidate for a ‘black box’ solver.

Notizen: A numerical scheme is presented for the solution of the Euler equations of compressible flow of a gas in a single spatial co-ordinate. This includes flow in a duct of variable cross-section as well as flow with slab, cylindrical or spherical symmetry and can prove useful when testing codes for the two-dimensional equations governing compressible flow of a gas. The resulting scheme requires an average of the flow variables across the interface between cells and for computational efficiency this average is chosen to be the arithmetic mean, which is in contrast to the usual ‘square root’ averages found in this type of scheme. The scheme is applied with success to five problems with either slab or cylindrical symmetry and a comparison is made in the cylindrical case with results from a two-dimensional problem with no sources.

Notizen: A single-point model in the vertical is used to examine the coupling between tidal currents and wind-driven flows in shallow near-coastal regions. Calculations using both a linear slip and a no-slip condition at the sea bed clearly show that coupling between tidal and wind-driven currents cannot occur in a linear model with a time-independent eddy viscosity. However with a physically more realistic time-varying viscosity related to the flow field, coupling does occur, the magnitude of this non-linear interaction depending upon the change in eddy viscosity over a tidal cycle and the intensity of shear in the vertical. A point model in the vertical with flow induced by an oscillatory pressure gradient and an additional constant wind stress is used to examine the influence of viscosity parametrization and water depth upon this coupling. The solution in the vertical is accomplished using both a functional approach and a finite difference method. Some conclusions as to the relative merits of these approaches, particularly the use of a transformed grid in the case of high-shear surface and bed boundary layers, are made in the paper.

Notizen: This paper presents a p- version least squares finite element formulation (LSFEF) for two-dimensional, incompressible, non-Newtonian fluid flow under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The dimensionless forms of the diffential equations describing the fluid motion and heat transfer are cast into a set of first-order differential equations using non-Newtonian stresses and heat fluxes as auxiliary variables. The velocities, pressure and temperature as well as the stresses and heat fluxes are interpolated using equal-order, C0-continuous, p-version hierarchical approximation functions. The application of least squares minimization to the set of coupled first-order non-linear partial differential equations results in finding a solution vector {δ} which makes the partial derivatives of the error functional with respect to {δ} a null vector. This is accomplished by using Newton's method with a line search. The paper presents the implementation of a power-law model for the non-Newtonian Viscosity. For the non-isothermal case the fluid properties are considered to be a function of temperature. Three numerical examples (fully developed flow between parallel plates, symmetric sudden expansion and lid-driven cavity) are presented for isothermal power-law fluid flow. The Couette shear flow problem and the 4:1 symmetric sudden expansion are used to present numerical results for non-isothermal power-law fluid flow. The numerical examples demonstrate the convergence characteristics and accuracy of the formulation.

Notizen: This paper deals with a critical evaluation of various finite element models for low-viscosity laminar incompressible flow in geometrically complex domains. These models use Galerkin weighted residuals UVP, continuous penalty, discrete penalty and least-squares procedures. The model evaluations are based on the use of appropriate tensor product Lagrange and simplex quadratic triangular elements and a newly developed isoparametric Hermite element. All of the described models produce very accurate results for horizontal flows. In vertical flow domains, however, two different cases can be recognized. Downward flows, i.e. when the gravitational force is in the direction of the flow, usually do not present any special problem. In contrast, laminar flow of low-viscosity Newtonian fluids where the gravitational force is acting in the direction opposite to the flow presents a difficult case. We show that only by using the least-squares method in conjunction with C1-continuous Hermite elements can this type of laminar flow be modelled accurately. The problem of smooth isoparametric mapping of C1 Hermite elements, which is necessary in dealing with geometrically complicated domains, is tackled by means of an auxiliary optimization procedure. We conclude that the least-squares method in combination with isoparmetric Hermite elements offers a new general-purpose modelling technique which can accurately simulate all types of low-viscosity incompressible laminar flow in complex domains.

Notizen: A finite element (FE) analysis of experimentally observed creeping thermal plumes in a medium whose viscosity is strongly temperature-dependent is performed. Such plumes are considered to play an important role in numerous geological processes and numerical modelling is often the only option to study their physics. Initial simulations by means of the general-purpose Galerkin finite element package NACHOS-II demonstrated serious deficiencies of the method in modelling plumes with large viscosity contrasts, in spite of several options for the solution (mixed or penalty formulation) and the elements (continuous or discontinous pressure). In agreement with observations from FE simulations of isothermal Stokes flow in other studies, we have isolated the violation of the div = 0 or incompressibility constraint as the major culprit in the failure of the FE method. It is demonstrated that the a posteriori computed discrete divergence (DDIV) can be used as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the reliability of the FE solution and to rank the solution and element options provided in the NACHOS code. On the basis of these considerations, the combination of the mixed method with a Q2-P1 (discontinuous pressure) element turns out to be the most suitable for the present plume problem but is still unable to sufficiently enforce the div = 0 condition. With a goal to remedy this detrimental behaviour, several FE modifications and new approaches have been taken. These include: (i) use of a new scaling option for the governing equations which has the effect of equilbrating the stiffness matrices and thus improving their condition; (ii) implementation of several iterative solution techniques such as the iterated penalty and the Uzawa algorithm for the augmented Langrangian to better accommodate the dual role of the pressure; (iii) use of a multistep Newton method to better handle the high non-linearity of the coupled flow/transport problem. Although each of these options (or a combination of them) is able to improve on the quality of FE solution, the most startling amelioration has been gained with option (iii). Use of the latter resulted in very satisfactory modelling of the experimentally observed plumes.

Notizen: In this study, the discretized finite volume form of the two-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is solved using both a frozen coefficient and a full Newton non-linear iteration. The optimal method is a combination of these two techniques. The linearized equations are solved using a conjugate-gradient-like method (CGSTAB). Various types of preconditioning are developed. Completely general sparse matrix methods are used. Investigations are carried out to determine the effect of finite volume cell anisotropy on the preconditioner. Numerical results are given for several test problems.

Notizen: In this paper a new, highly accurate method called PH is presented for the numerical integration of partial differential equations. The method is applied for the solution of the one-dimensional diffusion equation. Upon integrating the equation within a subdomain of space and time using the prismoidal approximation, a three-point implicit scheme is obtained with a truncation error of order O(k4, h6), where k and h represent the time and space steps respectively. The method is stable under the condition s = αk/h2 ≤ S(δ), where the function S(δ) increases as the parameter δ decreases from 1/12 to negative values. In practice the method behaves as unconditionally stable upon choosing an appropriate value for δ. A new formula is also adopted for the implementation of a Neumann boundary condition, introducing a truncation error of order O(h4). Numerical solutions are obtained incorporating Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The results prove that our method is far more accurate than any other-implicit or explicit method.

Notizen: Semi-Lagrangian methods are now perhaps the most widely researched algorithms in connection with atmospheric flow simulation codes. In order to investigate their applicability to hydraulic problems, cubic Hermite polynomials are used as the interpolant technique. The main advantage of such an approach is the use of information from only two points. The derivatives are calculated and limited so as to produce a shape-preserving solution. The lack of conservation of semi-Lagrangian methods, however, is widely regarded as a serious disadvantage for hydraulic studies, where non-linear problems in which shocks may develop are often encountered. In this work we describe how to make the scheme conservative using an FCT approach. The method proposed does not guarantee an unconditional shock-capturing ability but is able to correctly reproduce the discontinuous flows common in open channel simulation without any shock-fitting algorithm. It is a cheap way to improve existing 1D semi-Lagrangian codes and allows stable calculations beyond the usual CFL limits. A basic semi-Lagrangian method is presented that provides excellent results for a linear problem: the new techniques allow us to tackle non-linear cases without unduly degrading the accuracy for the simpler problems. Two one-dimensional hydraulic problems are used as test cases, water hammer and dam break. In the latter case, because of the non-linearity, special care is needed with the low-order solution and we show the advantages of using Leveque's large-time step version of Roe's scheme for this purpose.

Notizen: It is shown that the eddy viscosity profile in a quasi-three-dimensional numerical tidal and storm surge model can be estimated by assimilation of velocity data from one or more current meters located on the same vertical line. The computational model used is a simplified version of the so-called vertical/horizontal splitting algorithm proposed by Lardner and Cekirge. We have estimated eddy viscosity both as a constant and as a variable parameter. The numerical scheme consists of a two-level leapfrog method to solve the depth-averaged equations and a generalized Crank-Nicolson scheme to compute the vertical profile of the velocity field. The cost functional in the adjoint scheme consists of two terms. The first term is a certain norm of the difference between computed and observed velocity data and the second term measures the total variation in the eddy viscosity function. The latter term is not needed when the data are exact for the model but is necessary to smooth out the instabilities associated with ‘noisy’ data. It is shown that a satisfactory minimization can be accomplished using either the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) quasi-Newton algorithm or Nash's truncated Newton algorithm. Very effective estimation of eddy viscosity profiles is shown to be achieved even when the amount of data is quite small.

Notizen: A three-dimensional extension of the QUICK scheme adapted for the finite volume method and non-uniform grids is presented to handle convection-diffusion problems for high Peclet numbers and steep gradients. The algorithm is based on three-dimensional quadratic interpolation functions in which the transverse curvature terms are maintained and the diagonal dominance of the coefficient matrix is preserved. All formulae are explicitly given in an appendix. Results obtained with the classical upwind (UDS), the simplified QUICK (transverse terms neglected) and the present full QUICK schemes are given for two benchmark problems, one two-dimensional, steady state and the other three-dimensional, unsteady state. Both QUICK schemes are shown to give superior solutions compared with the UDS in terms of accuracy and efficiency. The full QUICK scheme performs better than the simplified QUICK, giving even for coarse grids acceptable results closer to the analytical solutions, while the computational time is not affected much.

Notizen: An implicit spatial differencing technique with fourth-order accuracy has been developed based on the Pade compact scheme. A dispersion-relation-preserving concept has been incorporated into the numerical scheme. Two-dimensional Euler computation of a spatially developing free shear flow with and without external excitation has been performed to demonstrate the capability of the numerical scheme developed. Results are in good agreement with theory and experimental observation regarding the growth rate of the fluctuating velocity, the convective velocity and the vortex-pairing process. The far-field sound pressure generated by the computed shear flow solution using Lighthill's acoustic analogy shows a strong directivity with a zone of silence at the flow angle.

Notizen: In stratified three-dimensional models the use of a boundary-fitted vertical co-ordinate is known to produce errors in the horizontal pressure gradient calculation near steep topography. The error is due to the splitting of the horizontal pressure gradient term in each of the momentum equations into two parts and the subsequent incomplete cancellation of the truncation errors of those parts. In order to minimize these pressure gradient errors, a fourth-order-accurate pressure gradient calculation has been implemented and installed in SPEM, a three-dimensional primitive equation ocean model. The stability and accuracy of the new scheme are compared with those of the original second-order-accurate model in a series of calculations of unforced flow in the vicinity of an isolated seamount. The new scheme is shown to have much smaller pressure gradient errors over a wide range of parameter space as well as a greater parametric domain of numerical stability.

Comparisons between a Riemann solver and a flux-vector-splitting method as well as between various numerical high-order extrapolation schemes with corresponding experimental results are presented.

Notizen: The axial singularity inverse method for designing bodies of revolution has been improved by using higher-order doublet elements. The performance of the method for various element orders and other solution parameters is presented in detail. The results indicate that the method is generally more robust, less sensitive to insets and has a better-conditioned coefficient matrix compared with the source method of the same order. The condition number of the matrix is shown to increase with the thickness of the body, the order of the method, the number of elements and the degree of stretching of the node distribution. In general, good performance is attained for most bodies even with ƒr as low as 2 by using 10-12 second-order doublet elements with insets greater than 0.02L from rounded ends. Increasing the insets to 0.06L appears to improve the accuracy of the method for most bodies but slows its convergence.

Notizen: A method is presented to calculate the low-speed incompressible separated flow around multi-element aerofoils. The geometries of multi-element aerofoils in the physical plane are completely arbitrary and are transformed into multiple circles in the computational plane by a conformal mapping technique. Jacob's model, which distributes sources on the separated surfaces of multi-element aerofoils to simulate the effects of separation, is adopted here. The position of the separated point and the pressure on the surfaces of multi-element aerofoils are calculated by iteratively coupling the potential flow and boundary layer. The effects of the boundary layer are simulated by modification of the boundary condition. All iterative procedures converge rapidly as a result of using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) technique.

Notizen: This paper deals with the non-stationary incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for two-dimensional flows expressed in terms of the velocity and pressure and of the vorticity and streamfunction. The equivalence of the two formulations is demonstrated, both formally and rigorously, by virtue of a condition of compatibility between the boundary and initial values of the normal component of velocity. This condition is shown to be the only compatibility condition necessary to allow for solutions of a minimal regularity, namely H1 for the velocity, as in most current numerical schemes relying on spatial discretizations of local type.

Notizen: This paper presents a numerical method for fluid flow in complex three-dimensional geometries using a body-fitted co-ordinate system. A new second-order-accurate scheme for the cross-derivative terms is proposed to describe the non-orthogonal components, allowing parts of these terms to be treated implicitly without increasing the number of computational molecules. The physical tangential velocity components resulting from the velocity expansion in the unit tangent vector basis are used as dependent variables in the momentum equations. A coupled equation solver is used in place of the complicated pressure correction equation associated with grid non-orthogonality. The co-ordinate-invariant conservation equations and the physical geometric quantities of control cells are used directly to formulate the numerical scheme, without reference to the co-ordinate derivatives of transformation. Several two- and three-dimensional laminar flows are computed and compared with other numerical, experimental and analytical results to validate the solution method. Good agreement is obtained in all cases.

Notizen: A study is reported on the possibility of improving the speed of convergence of existing numerical programmes for the simulation of flow in combustion chambers by applying the multigrid method to the pressure correction phase only. A version of the multigrid algorithm is introduced for this purpose which achieves a 1:10 residual reduction in a single V(1, 1) cycle. The overall decrease in computation time with respect to an industry-standard SIMPLE algorithm with single-grid pressure correction ranges from four to five times for SIMPLE itself and several other well-known algorithms to six times for a newly developed pressure correction strategy we call difference operator triangularization (DOT).

Notizen: Self-similar solutions to the Riemann problem for water with the modified Tait equation of state are presented. The methods of Smoller for gas dynamics are employed to reduce the problem to the solution of a single non-linear equation. The same methods are used for solving the Riemann problem at a gas-water interface. In both cases the method of interval bisections affords a solution technique free of problems with convergence.

Notizen: Transpiration is a technique in which extra non-physical normal flows are created on an aerofoil surface in order to form a new streamline pattern such that the surface streamlines no longer follow the aerofoil surface under inviscid flow. The transpiration model is an important technique adopted in aerofoil design either to avoid mesh regeneration when aerofoil profile co-ordinates are adjusted or to find shape corrections in inverse design methods. A first-order approximation (with respect to the normal streamline displacement) to the transpiration model is commonly adopted; it is shown that this can be a poor approximation especially in regions of high curvature. In this paper more accurate approximations are developed to address this problem and improve the accuracy.

Notizen: The aims of this paper are threefold: to increase the level of awareness within the shock-capturing community of the fact that many Godunov-type methods contain subtle flaws that can cause spurious solutions to be computed; to identify one mechanism that might thwart attempts to produce very-high-resolution simulations; and to proffer a simple strategy for overcoming the specific failings of individual Riemann solvers.

Notizen: A new approach to the calculation of the high pressures characterizing the flow field in front of a piston undergoing severe acceleration over the short term is presented. In contrast with previous approaches where the computational domain is altered but which stop short of transforming velocities, here the problem is solved in an accelerating non-Euclidean co-ordinate system where the piston is stationary. The method is applied to a study of the problem of premature sabot separation. Through use of Harten's second-order-accurate TVD scheme, flow simulations are performed for both 1D and 3D axisymmetric geometries. The simple 1D model gives pressure profiles surprisingly close to those of the more physical 3D model.

Notizen: A second-order radiation boundary condition (RBC) is derived for 2D shallow water problems posed in ‘wave equation’ form and is implemented within the Galerkin finite element framework. The RBC is derived by matching the dispersion relation for the interior wave equation with an approximate solution to the exterior problem for outgoing waves. The matching is correct to second order, accounting for curvature of the wave front and the geometry. Implementation is achieved by using the RBC as an evolution equation for the normal gradient on the boundary, coupled through the natural boundary integral of the Galerkin interior problem. The formulation is easily implemented on non-straight, unstructured meshes of simple elements. Test cases show fidelity to solutions obtained on extended meshes and improvement relative to simpler first-order RBCs.

Notizen: This paper introduces a vertex-centred finite volume method for compressible viscous flow incorporating a new shock detection procedure. The discretization is designed to be robust and accurate on the highly stretched and curved meshes necessary for resolving turbulent boundary layers around the leading edge of an aerofoil. Details of the method are described for two-dimensional problems and the natural extension of three-dimensional multiblock meshes is discussed. The shock detection procedure is used to limit the range of the shock-capturing dissipation specifically to regions containing shocks. For transonic turbulent flow this is shown to improve the boundary layer representation significantly.

Notizen: An implicit finite element method is presented for the solution of steady and unsteady inviscid compressible flows on triangular meshes under transonic conditions. The method involves a first-order time-stepping scheme with a finite element discretization that reduces to central differencing on a rectangular mesh. On a solid wall the slip condition is prescribed and the pressure is obtained from an approximation of the normal momentum equation. With this solver no artificial viscosity is added to ensure the success of the calculation. Numerical examples are given for steady and unsteady cases.

Notizen: A finite volume computational scheme to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for the laminar flow fields of partially enclosed axial and radial jets impinging on a flat plate has been devised and tested. This scheme is based on the SIMPLEC technique. However, because of the backflow at the ‘outflow’ boundary, the SIMPLEC pressure correction technique has to be modified. The need for this modification, necessitated by the convergence failure, showed the ‘hidden’ pressure boundary condition of SIMPLE-type techniques. Test computations with the present scheme for flows in a channel with a built-in cylinder show that the location of the exit boundary affects very slightly the separated flow behind the cylinder. Computed Squire jet flows compare quite well with the available analytical solution. Finally, impinging radial jets have been computed for different Reynolds numbers. The results show the critical Reynolds number below which a steady solution is obtained and above which periodic and eventually chaotic flows result.

Notizen: Numerical simulations have been undertaken for the benchmark problem of natural convection flow in a square cavity. The control volume method is used to solve the conservation equations for laminar and turbulent flows for a series of Rayleigh numbers (Ra) reaching values up to 1010. The k-∊ model has been used for turbulence modelling with and without logarithmic wall functions. Uniform and non-uniform (stretched) grids have been employed with increasing density to guarantee accurate solutions, especially near the walls for high Ra-values. ADI and SIP solvers are implemented to accelerate convergence. Excellent agreement is obtained with previous numerical solutions, while some discrepancies with others for high Ra-values may be due to a possibly different implementation of the wall functions. Comparisons with experimental data for heat transfer (Nusselt number) clearly demonstrates the limitations of the standard k-∊ model with logarithmic wall functions, which gives significant overpredictions.

Notizen: A new finite element procedure called the net inflow method has been developed to simulate time-dependent incompressible viscous flow including moving free surfaces and inertial effects. As a fixed mesh approach with triangular element, the net inflow method can be used to analyse the free surface flow in both regular and irregular domains. Most of the empty elements are excluded from the computational domain, which is adjusted successively to cover the entire region occupied by the liquid. The volume of liquid in a control volume is updated by integrating the net inflow of liquid during each iteration. No additional kinetic equation or material marker needs to be considered. The pressure on the free surface and in the liquid region can be solved explicitly with the continuity equation or implicitly by using the penalty function method. The radial planar free surface flow near a 2D point source and the dam-breaking problem on either a dry bed or a still liquid have been analysed and presented in this paper. The predictions agree very well with available analytical solutions, experimental measurements and/or other numerical results.

Notizen: The generalized integral transform technique is applied to the boundary layer equations for flow over a sphere in their primitive variables. Even though a diffusion-based eigenvalue problem is used, the velocity profile, shear stress and separation point have been calculated with high accuracy. Low-order approximations are shown to be accurate near the surface and the predictions of the separation point is very good. Comparison with finite difference results shows the better convergence behaviour of the integral transform method.

Notizen: A penalty function, finite volume method is described for two-dimensional laminar and turbulent flows. Turbulence is modelled using the k-∊ model. The governing equations are discretized and the resulting algebraic equations are solved using both sequential and coupled methods. The performance of these methods is gauged with reference to a tuned SIMPLE-C algorithm. Flows considered are a square cavity with a sliding top, a plane channel flow, a plane jet impingement and a plane channel with a sudden expansion. A sequential method is employed, which uses a variety of dicretization practices, but is found to be extremely slow to converge; a coupled method, evaluated using a variety of matrix solvers, converges rapidly but, relative to the sequential approach, requires larger memory.

Notizen: An efficient numerical method is presented for solving the equations of motion for viscous fluids. The equations are discretized on the basis of unstructured finite element meshes and then solved by direct iteration. Advective fluxes are temporarily fixed at each iteration to provide a linearized set of coupled equations which are then also solved by iteration using a fully implicit algebraic multigrid (AMG) scheme. A rapid convergence to machine accuracy is achieved that is almost mesh-independent. The scaling of computing time with mesh size is therefore close to the optimum.

Notizen: The work outlined below presents simple but effective adaptive meshing algorithms for boundary integral methods modelling inviscid flows (panel method) using the IGES standard for describing geometry. By using certain IGES entities in describing the boundary, CAD-derived geometry may be used such that the geometric integrity of the boundary is maintained after an adaptive redistribution of the mesh. Three types of error estimators are tested and all are shown to produce a more accurate representation of the flow phenomena for the same number of panels as compared with a uniform mesh distribution.

Notizen: The two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in primitive variables have been solved by a pseudospectral Chebyshev method using a semi-implicit fractional step scheme. The latter has been adapted to the particular features of spectral collocation methods to develop the monodomain algorithm. In particular, pressure and velocity collocated on the same nodes are sought in a polynomial space of the same order; the cascade of scalar elliptic problems arising after the spatial collocation is solved using finite difference preconditioning. With the present procedure spurious pressure modes do not pollute the pressure field. As a natural development of the present work a multidomain extent was devised and tested. The original domain is divided into a union of patching sub-rectangles. Each scalar problem obtained after spatial collocation is solved by iterating by subdomains. For steady problems a C1 solution is recovered at the interfaces upon convergence, ensuring a spectrally accurate solution.A number of test cases have been solved to validate the algorithm in both its single-block and multidomain configurations. The preliminary results achieved indicate that collocation methods in multidomain configurations might become a viable alternative to the spectral element technique for accurate flow prediction.
