Beschreibung: Two experiments were reported. In each experiment, the subjects were shown photographs of living rooms. The seat occupied by another person was indicated. In the first experiment, the subject was asked to choose an unoccupied seat in the room; in the second, he was asked to imagine himself in a second seat and to indicate his degree of comfort with that situation. The results of Experiment 1 show that both the topic of conversation and the indicated relationship of the person in the other chair were significantly related to distance between the chosen chairs. The results of Experiment 2 show that discomfort increased with increasing distance between chairs, and that comfort was related to both the topic of conversation and to the relationship indicated between the subject and the occupant of the other chair. Findings are discussed in the context of Hall's theory of interpersonal distances.

Beschreibung: This article examines crowding in San Francisco's Chinatown and the attitudes and perceptions of its residents, using self-reported interview survey data. The objectives of the study were to test the validity of conjectures prevalent in the literature about the Chinese and crowding, to test Wirth's theory that crowding is related to psychological stress and social conflict, and to provide a fuller understanding of the nature of crowding and of density. Findings were contrary to the beliefs held about Chinese attitudes toward crowding; Chinatown residents evaluated crowding as undesirable and harmful. Personal effects of crowding included environmental health problems, social conflict, and psychological stress. Simultaneously, for a disadvantaged population, Wirth's theory was supported. Also, cultural background and environmental referent significantly predicted perceived crowding at the neighborhood level but did not affect perceptions of crowding at the dwelling level. Perceptions of dwelling crowding were instead heavily influenced by objective indices, that is, number of persons and number of rooms. Findings suggested that extended exposure to crowding breeds greater dislike for crowding at the micro level and that crowding in a primary environment is deemed more undesirable than crowding in a secondary environment.

Beschreibung: Some of the most hazardous air pollution areas of the United States are found in Texas. This study compares the socioeconomic composition of 40 neighborhoods most severely affected by air pollution to 40 randomly selected metropolitan neighborhoods in the state. While studies in other states indicate that it is poor, minority people who live in polluted areas, this analysis indicates that in Texas middle-class, working persons live there to be near their jobs. The study draws on past research in environmental hazards and argues that air pollution might most clearly be understood as part of a new class of hazards: insidious technological hazards.

Beschreibung: To supplement a substantial literature on the symptomatic consequences of disaster, this article focuses on the adaptational requirements experienced by disaster victims, operationalized as the stressful life events following a severe flood that occurred in 1984 in southeastern Kentucky. In this study of older adults, life events were analyzed at three levels of specificity: as an aggregate measure reflecting the total amount of changes without regard to content, as seven content-oriented categories (Household Disruption, Financial Disruption, Family Conflict, Social Disruption, Health Disruption, Bereavement, and Good Things For Self), and as 40 specific events. In analyses that controlled for subjects' preflood resources, mental health, and sociodemographic characteristics, differences between victims and nonvictims in the number and types of life events experienced were tested. Overall, the findings suggest that older flood victims are more likely than other older adults to experience social disruption, but not necessarily the other six categories of life events. Most specifically, victims were found to be more likely than nonvictims to have friends/neighbors move away and to have new family conflicts; victims were less likely than others to have children leave home.

Beschreibung: For Post-Modern architects and others with an interest in architecture that communicates desirable meanings to the public, empirical study of the meaning inferred from styles can be helpful. This research examined the connotative meanings laypersons infer from various home-styles, the variability of those meanings with sociodemographic characteristics and region, and whether architects share or know public meanings. Adiverse sample of 118 adults in Columbus, Ohio, and 102 adults in Los Angeles rated six styles of homes in terms of desirability, and the friendliness and status of assumed residents. In total, 65 architects in Columbus answered the same questions and tried to guess how the Columbus public responded. Laypersons in Columbus and L.A. displayed remarkably similar patterns of response. Significant effects of style revealed that both groups rated Farm and Tudor as most desirable, Mediterranean and Saltbox and least desirable, Farm as most friendly, Colonial as unfriendly, Colonial and Tudor as highest in status, and Saltbox and Mediterranean as lowest in status. Differences in meaning emerged in relation to sociodemographic characteristics, and the architects responded differently from and misgauged the public responses.

Beschreibung: The aims of this study were (1) to test theories related to neighborhood satisfaction and safety and (2) to address planning and policy questions raised by a proposal for controls on development in San Francisco's Chinatown. Findings of an interview sample survey supported the urban scale, compositional, quality of local conditions, and urban anonymity perspectives. Results revealed a relationship between high population density/commercial development and lowered levels of neighborhood satisfaction as well as a relationship between increased building density and lesser feelings of safety in one's neighborhood. Increased development would be expected to exacerbate undesirable environmental qualities of the area and potentially destroy the ethnic enclave nature of the community. The margin of "affordable error" was judged to be small given the following factors: (1) lack of alternatives for this low income, nonmobile, immigrant, and Chinese monolingual population, (2) lower level of neighborhood satisfaction among Chinatown residents than U.S. residents overall, and (3) the greater neighborhood satisfaction experienced by the older, poorer, and nonaspiring and those whose neighboring relations constitute a form of community.

Beschreibung: A three-year panel study was conducted to examine the impact of the residential environment on the mental health of the respondents and their children. This report focuses on the influence of crime in the neighborhood upon the well-being of 337 Black and Hispanic women and their children. The findings suggest some adverse effect of crime on mental health of the adults, but no reliable effects on the mental health of children. Few interactive effects of crime with other residential and social-environmental parameters were observed.

Beschreibung: Data were collected from 54 primary caregivers, their husbands, and adult children who were members of multigenerational households that included a disabled person over age 65. Household characteristics were examined in relationship to perceptions of household space, burden, and satisfaction. Household characteristics did not predict either burden or satisfaction. Household conversion decreased perceptions of household space for women and for their husbands. In addition, for husbands, the more time an elder spent in shared living space, the more negative the perceptions of household space. For teenage children in the household, sharing amenities with elders resulted in more negative perceptions of household space. Results are interpreted in terms of caregiving stress and suggestions are made for home adaptations.

Beschreibung: A range of techniques have emerged in recent years for the conduct of environmental programming. Such programming techniques are meant to facilitate the systematic application of environment-behavior research to the design process. However, despite the efforts of both researchers and practitioners, the success of environmental programming in bringing about effective research application remains quite limited. This article reviews several reasons for these difficulties in research application, and concludes that the problem is rooted in quite basic conceptions of the nature and goals of behavioral research. An alternative "action research" approach to the conduct of environment-behavior studies is then presented. Some of the benefits of viewing environmental research and programming as interrelated phases within a larger "action" framework are considered.
