Notizen: Abstract Collaborative design is currently supported through the integration of graphical representations with relational databases and the distribution of data and applications across local and wide area networks. Recent developments in computer support for synchronous collaboration have led to the development of multi-user drawing boards and video conferencing software for remote meetings. The extension of CAD for use in a collaborative design session changes the focus of collaborative design from a distribution of data to a shared workspace. Combining CAD with the concept of multi-user software introduces issues of shared visualisation and shared decision making. A model for the integration of CAD and database management in a collaborative design session is presented within a client server architecture, and an implementation of this model using AutoCAD as the shared CAD system is described.

Notizen: Abstract Complex parametric curves have been subject of a symbolic algorithm approach in recent years. In this paper we analyze the theoretical applicability of some of these algorithms to the real parametric curve case. In particular, we show how several results are valid both over the real and the complex numbers, as they hold equivalently over a real curve and its complexification. Therefore, the standard algorithms for the complex case can be applied to obtain real answers in the real case. A second issue in our paper is the study of the very different behaviour of the real parametric mapping and we characterize here the properties of being (almost) injective or surjective.

Notizen: Abstract Technical education involves programmes, disciplines, but also a level of competence to be reached by students, in reference to social practices outside of school. Technical teacher education must not only include competence in these social practices but must also develop specific, practical teaching skills. Today a rapid evolution in academic disciplines has been observed, partially linked to the circulation of models. the present study is concerned with the transformation of models within these exchanges and attempts to extract knowledge that would be useful for decisions to be made concerning teacher education.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents a new method for generating a tangent-plane continuous (GC1) multisided surface with an arbitrary number of sides. The method generates piecewise biquintic tensor product Bézier patches which join each other with G1-continuity and which interpolate the given vector-valued first order cross-derivative functions along the boundary curves. The problem of the twist-compatibility of the surface patches at the center points is solved through the construction of normal-curvature continuous starlines and by the way the twists of surface patches are generated. This avoids the inter-relationship among the starlines and the twists of surface patches at the center points. The generation of the center points and the starlines has many degrees of freedom which can be used to modify and improve the quality of the resulting surface patches. The method can be used in various geometric modeling applications such as filling n-sided holes, smoothing vertices of polyhedral solids, blending multiple surfaces, and modeling surface over irregular polyhedral line and curve meshes.

Notizen: Abstract Many engineering activities are confronted with the relation between shape and behavior. Modern ‘state-of-the-art’ CAD systems can support a dynamic design process with flexible and umambiguous geometric modeling of artifacts. The Finite Element (FE) method is a general method to model and simulate physical behavior. CAD and FE integration enables numerical prediction of the physical behavior of artifacts. To deal with the complexity of modern products and the dynamic character of the design process, the integration must be addressed from both a systems and a process point of view. The models must thus be flexible, scalable, and reusable. A modularized modeling approach based on four stages is proposed, and exemplified with behavior modeling of a turn-key grinding machine.

Notizen: Abstract This study is a critical review of General Design Theory (GDT), a mathematical theory of design. It reviews the assumptions (axioms) and predictions (theorems) of GDT with respect to design and illustrates them with simple examples. The scope of GDT with respect to design, the guidelines it provides for building computer-aided design (CAD) systems, and the possibility of implementing these guidelines are examined. GDT assumptions are too restrictive to apply directly to design, and several potential avenues for modifying the theory to attempt to broaden its scope are discussed. Nevertheless, these modifications may not lead to proving strong predictions about design. Treating GDT as a model, rather than as an accurate reflection of design, allows treating the guidelines as hypotheses to be tested empirically. The article discusses these guidelines and some experimental implementations that embody some of them.

Notizen: Abstract In the market-place of the 21st century, there is no place for traditional ‘over-the-wall’ communications between design and manufacturing. In order to ‘design it right the very first time’, designers must ensure that their products are both functional and easy to manufacture. Software tools have had some successes in reducing the barriers between design and manufacturing. Manufacturability analysis systems are emerging as one such tool — enabling identification of potential manufacturing problems during the design phase and providing suggestions to designers on how to eliminate them. In this paper, we provide a survey of current state-of-the-art automated manufacturability analysis. We present the historical context in which this area has emerged and outline characteristics to compare and classify various systems. We describe the two dominant approaches to automated manufacturability analysis and overview representative systems based on their application domain. We describe support tools that enhance the effectiveness of manufacturability analysis systems. Finally, we attempt to expose some of the existing research challenges and future directions.

Notizen: Abstract When producing technical documentation for rolling rotational connections, more time is used for drawing preparation than for actual problem-solving. The major share of element development is made using adaptive or variant design methods. Computer support can shorten the time needed. The designer must be careful not to lose the overview of the problem. Efficient CAD systems should provide the designer with: a high degree of creative work, possibility of adaptations of form, technology and regulations over wide limits, and high reliability and constant control over the design process. This paper studies the possibilities of the design process methods related to the capabilities of such an ‘intelligent’ CAD system used for the design of rotational connections and workshop documentation for the purposes of manufacture.

Notizen: Abstract An integrated system for design and analysis of multibody systems has been developed and is described in this paper. The use of the system is demonstrated through the example provided. The system consists of a commercially available CAD program and a multibody system analysis code developed at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, These tools are integrated using a relational database, the structure of which was developed at Luleå University of Technology, in order to get a complete system for design and analysis of multibody systems. The main gains from the integrated system are the possibilities of using calculated component data like mass and moment of inertia from the CAD program in the simulation models, the automatic formulation of input files for the analysis code, and finally the visualization of simulation results using the surface data of the solid models. The interactive structured query language (ISQL) of the database management system provides the possibility of examining the components of the multibody system during the design work and before any simulation is performed.

Notizen: Abstract CAD-FEA coupling has been the subject of research for a long time. Initially developed with the aim of connecting single applications, requirements due to the interfaces rose along with increasing application of computer-aided methods in product development. The introduction of the termproduct data model in combination with object-oriented technology, allowed progressive work towards the integration of product data. First results have been given in form of a standardized product data model called STEP (ISO 10303) to serve for CAE product data exchange. The authors have had the opportunity to examine the data model introduced by STEP in general and depicting the CAD-FEA connection as well as to implement a prototype STEP interface. The article first presents some fundamentals of product data modeling and related aspects of design and analysis product data, then gives a survey of the case study being done in CAD-FEA coupling with STEP and in conclusion sketches the concept of an object-oriented CAD-FEA integration model to allow for bidirectional and process conform data exchange.
