    Notes: Abstract The electrochemical behaviour of cobalt in KOH solutions of different concentrations was studied. The effects of applied potential, temperature and the presence of aggressive Cl− ions were investigated. Different electrochemical methods such as open-circuit potential measurements, polarisation techniques and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used. The electrochemical behaviour of cobalt in naturally aerated KOH solutions is characterized by three different regions according to the alkali concentration. Corrosion behaviour was observed at high concentrations (0.3–1.0 M); passivation at lower concentrations (0.01–0.05 M), and at intermediate concentrations (0.1–0.2 M) corrosion followed by passivation was recorded. The corrosion parameters (i corr, E corr, and R corr) under various conditions were calculated. Equivalent-circuit models for the electrode–electrolyte interface under different conditions were proposed. The experimental impedance data were fitted to theoretical data according to the proposed models. The relevance of the proposed models to the corrosion–passivation phenomena occurring at the electrode–solution interface was discussed. The electrochemical experimental results and discussions were supported by surface analytical techniques.

    Notes: Abstract The corrosion inhibition behaviour of some substituted dithiobiurets, namely, -1,5-diphenyl-2,4-dithiobiuret (DPDTB), 1-tolyl-5-phenyl-2,4-dithiobiuret (TPDTB), 1-anisidyl-5-phenyl-2,4-dithiobiuret (APDTB), 1-chorophenyl-5-diphenyl-2,4-dithiobiuret (CPDTB) were studied in 1 to 5 M HCl on mild steel. The characteristics of these compounds are explained in terms of factors such as inhibitor concentration, acid concentration, temperature, immersion time and molecular structure. Potentiodynamic polarization and a.c. impedance techniques were used to investigate the inhibition mechanism. Among the compounds studied APDTB exhibited the best performance giving more than 98% inhibition efficiency (IE) in HCl solutions. DPDTB and CPDTB were found to reduce hydrogen permeation through mild steel in HCl solutions. The adsorption of APDTB was also confirmed by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES).

    Notes: Abstract The first neutral phenol subfraction of the aqueous extract of rosemary leaves was studied as corrosion inhibitor for the Al–2.5Mg alloy in a 3% NaCl solution at 25 ∘C. Experiments were carried out over a wide range of concentrations. The results show that the additive adsorbs on the alloy according to the Freundlich isotherm. The polarization curves show that the first neutral subfraction acts as a cathodic-type inhibitor. The impedance spectrum obtained was interpreted in terms of change in characteristics of the natural oxide film at the surface of the alloy. Equivalent circuits, which represent the system, are proposed and individual circuit elements are defined.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports an experimental study of the initial stage of atmospheric zinc corrosion using ex situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in methanol electrolyte. Compared with the traditional techniques for studying atmospheric corrosion, such as gravimetry, the EIS technique significantly reduced the exposure time for detectable corrosion at any relative humidity from several days to a few hours. The samples were first exposed to synthetic atmospheres with careful control of O2 and CO2 concentrations, relative humidity and temperature. EIS was then used to measure the polarization resistance (R p) of the exposed samples. The corrosion products were analysed by a combination of grazing-angle X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy. Several interesting phenomena occurring in the initial stage of corrosion were demonstrated by studying the electrochemical properties of the surface layer formed on the zinc. At high values of relative humidity (RH 95–100%), with CO2 〉 40 ppm, the R p of the surface film formed increased monotonically with time and relative humidity. At intermediate values of relative humidity (RH 50–85%) in the presence of CO2 (40–500 ppm), R p first increased with time, reached a maximum, then fell from the maximum value before again rising slowly. A brief description of the mechanism of atmospheric zinc corrosion is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract Electrochemical experiments were performed to study the inhibitive effect towards copper corrosion of three organic compounds: namely, benzotriazole, 1-hydroxybenzotriazole and 3-amino 1,2,4-triazole. Statistical analysis of pit nucleation times showed that 3-amino 1,2,4-triazole exhibited the most significant inhibitive effect towards pitting. However, impedance measurements revealed that this compound produced a thinning of the passive film. This was corroborated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results showed that copper pitting resistance could not be explained only by characterizing the protectiveness of the passive film.

    Notes: Abstract Two series of Hg-based oxides (Hg0.7Mo0.3)Sr2(Ca1−x R x )Cu2O z (R = Nd and Pr, 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.7) have been synthesized. Electrical-resistivity measurements show that these compounds are superconductors with maximum onset T c of 107 and 102 K for Nd- and Pr-containing samples, respectively. The neutron powder diffraction experiments on both as-prepared and O2-annealed samples of R = Nd revealed that the O(3) site at the HgOδ sheets are fully occupied and shifted towards the Hg/Mo site to form Mo–O bonds.

    Notes: Abstract It has been reported that, by adding equal amounts of CaO and CuO to non superconducting La3Ba3Cu6O z (La-336), a series of superconductors with nominal compositions La3Ca y Ba3Cu6+y O z were prepared with maximum Ton c ∼ 80K. Similar studies on addition of CaO and CuO in nonsuperconducting LaBaCu2O z (La-112) resulted into superconducting LaCaBaCu3O z (La-1113). To date no attempt has been made to synthesize La2CaBa2Cu5O z (La-2125) superconducting phase by addition of CaO and CuO to non superconducting La2Ba2Cu4O z (La-224) system. Also no reports are published to study the effect of replacing larger La3+-ions (1.01Å) by smaller rare earth ions viz Y3+(0.89Å), Er3+(0.91Å), Gd3+(0.91Å) on the structural and superconducting properties of (La2−x R x )Ba2(Ca y Cu4+y )O z (LRBCaC); 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5; y=2x system. In this paper, we report the method of synthesis, structural and superconducting property characterization using X-ray diffraction, oxygen content measurements using iodometry, resistivity measurements using d.c. four probe technique and a.c. susceptibility measurements in the temperature range RT to 15K. Also a comparative study, on the evolution of superconducting phase with Ca-concentration for different rare earth substitutions for LRBCaC system in the context of hole doping mechanism, is carried out.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied the role of interlayer interactions (W) in the pressure dependence of T c of layered superconductors. The expressions for dT c /dP are obtained by including the effects of layered structure within the framework of two different proposed models, namely the negative-U Hubbard model and the Hirsch model. We observe that the inclusion of interlayer interaction provides better explanation of pressure dependence of T c . Our numerical results show that the systems having one CuO2 layer per unit cell may be well described by small values of W while the larger values of W accounts for the systems having two or more superconducting layers in a unit cell. The calculated values of dT c /dP vs. W are found to be in good agreement with those of experimental results obtained for various high T c superconductors of cuprate family.

    Notes: Abstract From various theoretical approaches it seems to be rather well established that the Zhang–Rice (ZR) singlet state should play an important role in doped high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) oxides. Yet the conclusion that a one-band model is capable of describing many of the unusual physics observed in HTSC compounds has been questioned because the p z states of the oxygen atoms in the planes as well as those of the apical oxygen atoms hybridize with the Cu d3z2-r2 orbitals and induce a mixing of the in-plane states with the out-of-plane bands. It is shown that electron–lattice coupling and polarizability effects modify the electronic structure of the effective Hamiltonian considered here.

    Notes: Abstract We propose a model for a spatially modulated collective state of superconducting cuprates in which the electronic properties vary locally in space. In this model, the regions of higher hole density (called stripes) are described as Luttinger liquids and the regions of lower density (antiferromagnetic ladders) as an interacting bosonic gas of $${\text{d}}_{x^2 - y^2 } $$ hole pairs. We show that the transition to the superconducting state is topologic and driven by decay processes among these elementary excitations in the presence of vibrations.
