    Description: The vertical seismic profile, acquired with an array of 3C receivers and either a single source or several arranged in a multi-component configuration, provides an ideal high fidelity calibration tool for seismic projects involved in the application of seismic anisotropy. This book catalogues the majority of specialized tools necessary to work with P-P, P-S and S-S data from such Vertical seismic profiling surveys at the acquisition design, processing and interpretation stages. In particular, it discusses 3C, 4C, 6C and 9C Vertical seismic profiling, marine and land surveys with near and multiple offsets (walkways), azimuths (walkarounds) or a combination of both. These are considered for TIH or TIV flavours of seismic anisotropy arising from cracks, fractures, sedimentary layering, and shales. The anisotropic adaptation of familiar seismic methods for velocity analysis and inversion, reflected amplitude interpretation, are given together with more multi-component specific algorithms based upon the principles dictated by the vector convolutional model. Thus, multi-component methods are described that provide tests and compensation for source or receiver vector fidelity, tool rotation correction, layer stripping, near-surface correction, wavefield separation, and the Alford rotation with its variants.     Description: The monograph introduces the reader to the world of inductive well logging - an established method for surveying the electrical conductivity of rocks surrounding a borehole. The emphasis is on developing a theory of inductive logging and on understanding logging tools basic physics, since this theory and understanding furnish valuable insights for inventing practical induction logging techniques. The first chapter of the book presents the basic laws of electromagnetism from a point of view that will facilitate the application of the theory to problems in electromagnetic logging.     Description: Santorini, Greece is a major explosive volcano. The Santorini volcanic complex is composed of two active volcanoes—Nea Kameni and Mt. Columbo. Holocene eruptions have generated a variety of processes and deposits and eruption mechanisms pose significant hazards of various types. It has been recognized that, for major European volcanoes, few studies have focused on the social aspects of volcanic activity and little work has been conducted on public perceptions of hazard, risk and vulnerability. Such assessments are an important element of establishing public education programmes and developing volcano disaster management plans. We investigate perceptions of volcanic hazards on Santorini. We find that most residents know that Nea Kameni is active, but only 60% know that Mt. Columbo is active. Forty percent of residents fear that negative impacts on tourism will have the greatest effect on their community. In the event of an eruption, 43% of residents would try to evacuate the island by plane/ferry. Residents aged N50 have retained a memory of the effects of the last eruption at the island, whereas younger residents have no such knowledge. We find that dignitaries and municipal officers (those responsible for planning and managing disaster response) are informed about the history, hazards and effects of the volcanoes. However, there is no bemergency planQ for the island and there is confusion between various departments (Civil Defense, Fire, Police, etc.) about the emergency decision-making process. The resident population of Santorini is at high risk from the hazards associated with a future eruption.

    Description: High concentrations of free C32 bis-homohopanoic acids (up to 433 μg/g dry wt) occur in microbial mats at methane seeps in anoxic Black Sea waters. These compounds show a strong preference for the ‘geological’ 17α(H),21β(H)- over the ‘biological’ 17β(H),21β(H)-configuration (αβ/ββ ratios up to 30.7) and indicate the potential formation of αβ-hopanoids in modern environments. Strong 13C-depletions (δ13C as low as −78.4‰ PDB) indicate an in situ generation of these hopanoids by biota involved in the anaerobic cycling of methane carbon. The inferred presence of hopanoids indigenous to a permanently anoxic marine environment is significant because these lipids are not known to occur in strictly anaerobic bacteria.

    Description: Late glacial to post glacial sea-level changes provide direct evidence of the progress of melting of large ice sheets during the last deglaciation but, although the correlation between ice and ocean volumes is incontrovertible, the causal link is commonly obscured. Local effects including tectonics, isostatic and hydroisostatic responses and equatorial ocean-syphoning impose additional signals that hide the true picture. A detailed regional study of the Western Indian Ocean based on the analysis of drill cores carried out through modern reefs, in combination with observations and sampling of reef foreslopes, and investigations of outcrops provides a comprehensive data base. Sites from a range of tectonic settings include the microcontinental margins of Madagascar, the granitic Seychelles, and the isolated volcanic islands of Réunion, Mauritius and the Comoros in which the effects of subsidence can be shown to be small. These cover a range of latitudes, and comparisons with adjacent sites on continental margins allow the construction of sea-level curves that closely reflect the eustatic response and disengage this from the effects of other mechanisms. The Mayotte foreslope in the Comoro Islands provides the first coral reef record of sea-level change during the early deglaciation in the Indian Ocean (110–115 m below present sea level between 18,000 and 17,000 yr BP). Two distinctive reef terraces, at 90 and 60 m water depth are dated at 13,600 yr BP and partly attributed to the Younger Dryas period (12,700–11,600 cal yr BP). Reef drowning at around 13,500 yr BP may correspond to Meltwater Pulse 1A, and although there were surges in the rate of sea-level rise, most notably between 11,950 and 11,350 yr BP, there is little evidence to support a well-defined Meltwater Pulse 1B. Reconstructed Holocene sea-level curves are in good agreement and reflect a rapid sea-level rise of about 6 mm yr−1 between 10,000 and 7500 yr BP, followed by a clear inflection around 7500 yr BP when the rate fell to 1.1 mm yr−1. Modern reefs started to grow 8000–9000 years ago. In the post-glacial period the rate of sea-level rise was 1–1.5 mm yr−1 before stabilization at its present level 3000–2500 years ago. Curves for the 10,000–6000 yr−1 BP interval correspond closely with those predicted by theoretical models but lie below these in the subsequent period. In particular, and with the exception of the margins of the Madagascar microcontinent influenced by hydroisostatic processes, they do not reflect predicted higher sea-level stands during the late Holocene.

    Description: The 14C-dating of microbial carbonate structures growing at methane seeps in anoxic waters of the Black Sea has shown a gradual increase with depth of the age of carbonates of these buildups. Comparing the radiocarbon age of the base and middle parts of the microbial structures gives an approximate time of origin of the deepest and shallowest microbial buildups as about 5300 and 2900 years before present, respectively. These dates correspond to the first appearance of hydrogen sulfide in the deepest Black Sea waters and to the stabilization of the upper boundary of the anoxic zone around the present-day level.

    Description: Understanding how complex, highly variable sedimentary systems interact in time and space to release, transport and concentrate diamonds is the basis for successful exploration strategies for placer diamond deposits. De Beers’ and Namdeb's West Coast operations are widely involved in a variety of applied scientific research to unravel the complex interactions of Cainozoic fluvial, marine and aeolian systems that have contributed to the formation of the most spectacular gem diamond placer in the world. Geological models produced not only provide the basis for exploration target selection but also high-resolution orebody characterisation, a prerequisite for high confidence geostatistical evaluation, mining system design and mine planning. This paper draws on some of the many applied research projects that have contributed to De Beers’ and Namdeb's placer exploration success that continues to deliver new mineral resources on the West Coast. The history of the Orange River has, and continues to be intensively studied both on- and offshore as the principal conduit for diamond introduction to the continental margin. Use of the “Jago” submersible has introduced a new dimension to offshore sedimentological studies on the continental shelf through direct seafloor observation, which helped us to identify the latest deep-water offshore development—the late Pliocene/early Pleistocene Orange River fan-delta.

    Description: Two modes of decrease in load bearing capacity of granular materials are discussed in view of experimental results. Both relate to the fact that frictional materials exhibit nonassociated plastic flow and they undergo considerable volume changes, either contraction or dilation. One mode consists of the instability that may occur in certain regions of stress space and potentially result in liquefaction of the granular material. It is the fact that loading of contracting soil (resulting in large plastic strains) can occur under decreasing stresses that may lead to unstable behavior under undrained conditions. As long as the soil remains drained, it will remain stable in the region of potential instability. The other mode is initiated by localization of plastic strains and subsequent development of shear bands, which in granular materials is followed by a decrease in load bearing capacity. These two modes are mutually exclusive and they occur for different loading and material conditions as discussed here on the basis of experimental observations.

    Description: Analysis of 12,000 electronic still camera images collected with the ARGO II vehicle near the Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) active hydrothermal mound, 26°N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has made possible the first quantitative in situ assessment of both fissure orientation and width within the median valley of a slow-spreading ridge. Fissures near the TAG mound are partially rubble-filled extensional fractures that cut lightly sedimented seafloor and in ∼1% of our observations host pillow lavas. Fissure widths range from 0.15 to 3.5 m, with a mean of 0.7 m, and do not vary systematically within the survey area. First-order estimates of crack depth, based on these width measurements and reasonable elastic moduli, indicate that fissures are restricted to depths 〈500 m, with a mean depth of ∼70 m. Fissure-associated eruptives were therefore probably fed by shallow propagating dikes. TAG fissures exhibit a wide range of orientations, with ∼40% deviating by 〉45° from the strike of the ridge axis. The formation of obliquely oriented fissures requires that the local least compressive stress direction varies (at least temporarily) from that predicted by the regional tectonic stress field associated with plate separation. This stress field reorientation may be facilitated by variations in the style of magma emplacement within the rift. The close spatial association of long-term hydrothermal activity, fissure-hosted lava flows, and faults and fissures trending oblique to the spreading axis suggests a causal relationship between the impact of dike intrusion and the maintenance of localized hydrothermal flow.

    Description: New data obtained during re-mapping of the northern part of Syros (Cyclades, Greece) allow the refinement of existing concepts about the structural evolution of this island. A metabasite belt and its metasedimentary envelope near Kampos and San Michali were mapped at a 1:5000 scale, with special emphasis on the structural inventory. The HP/LT rocks (P , 1.5 GPa; T , 500 8C at ,50 Ma) exposed are intensely deformed by at least two isoclinal folding events. Relative age relations between deformation and peak metamorphism indicate that isoclinal folding took place before or during peak metamorphism. Later deformation stages include Miocene non-penetrative upright kink folding and crenulation, transpressional strike-slip faulting, and open upright cylindrical folding, followed by the development of steep normal faults. Taking into account recent zircon U–Pb geochronological constraints, lithostratigraphic observations, and published data on the Neogene structural evolution of the Aegean, we present a history for the rocks of Syros, beginning with the formation of the oceanic crust(represented by the metabasites) to the present.

    Description: Volcanology has been in the past and in many respects remains a subject dominated by pure research grounded in the earth sciences. Over the past 30 years a paradigm shift has occurred in hazard assessment which has been aided by significant changes in the social theory of natural hazards and the first-hand experience gained in the 1990s by volcanologists working on projects conceived during the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR). Today much greater stress is placed on human vulnerability, the potential for marginalisation of disadvantaged individuals and social groups, and the requirement to make applied volcanology sensitive to the characteristics of local demography, economy, culture and politics. During the IDNDR a methodology, broadly similar to environmental impact analysis, has emerged as the preferred method for studying human vulnerability and risk assessment in volcanically active regions. The characteristics of this new methodology are discussed and the progress which has been made in innovating it on the European Union laboratory volcanoes located in western Europe is reviewed. Furnas (São Miguel, Azores) and Vesuvius in Italy are used as detailed case studies.

    Description: In order to explain biological zonation, shore height above the ordnance level is frequently used as an indicator of the abiotic gradient in intertidal ecosystems. This is based on the implicit assumption that shore height is directly correlated with inundation frequency and/or duration. Despite the importance of inundation for tidal ecosystems, measurements have rarely been taken directly by measuring inundation at the site of investigation. We measured mean high tide (MHT) and flooding frequency at three sites on the Dutch Barrier Island of Schiermonnikoog. To assess the scale dependence, we compared local measurements with the estimated inundation frequencies based on the official tide gauge (OTG) farther away. Locally measured MHT water levels differed among sites and were consistently higher than estimated MHT water levels. With this data, we subsequently estimated the inundation frequency of vegetation plots from our measurements and correlated it with species distribution. In a logistic regression inundation frequency accounted for twice the variance in explaining the dominance of three salt marsh species than shore height. The discrepancy in annual inundation frequency of the vegetation between sites was ≦300% for a given shore height. Within each site replicated estimates of inundation frequency proved to be consistent (scale 10–50 m). Estimated and measured inundation frequencies thus reliably correlated at a small-scale (tens of metres), but not at a larger scale (hundreds of metres to kilometres). If inundation frequency is used as an explanatory variable, it will therefore be advisable to consider the spatial heterogeneity of the measurements, in particular if different sites are to be compared. We give mean inundation frequencies of three dominant salt marsh species (Elymus athericus, Festuca rubra, Artemisia maritima) measured over 1 year.

The databases include data relating to natural seabed gas seeps and features such as pockmarks, cold seep communities, and methane-derived carbonates which are known to be found in association with seeps. The databases are compiled from published reports (so far restricted to those written in English), and users are able to interrogate the system for specified features from user-defined areas.

    Description: The relationship between partial melting and granite intrusion in a classic Barrovian metamorphic terrane has been assessed. Thirteen samples were dated by SHRIMP U–Pb zircon geochronology from the island of Naxos, Greece, one of the Aegean metamorphic core complexes. The effect of partial melting during peak Barrovian metamorphism on Naxos is recorded by fine (〈30 mm) zircon overgrowths surrounding older cores in seven of nine samples of migmatite analyzed. The ages of these overgrowths suggest that partial melting commenced prior to 20.7 Ma. The timing of partial melting on Naxos also constrainsthe onset of extensional tectonism in the area to pre-20.7 Ma. The preservation of zircon overgrowth rims with distinctly different concordant ages, ranging from 20.7 to 16.8 Ma, both from different samples and from within the one handspecimen, suggests that zircon precipitation, associated with the partial melting process, was episodic over this age range on both local(cm) and regional (km) scales. Zircons from four granite intrusives were also dated and range in age from 15.4 to 11.3 Ma, with the main period of magmatic activity at ca. 12 Ma, clearly post-dating metamorphism. The sequence of partial melting, Barrovian metamorphism and magmatism in the Naxos metamorphic core complex can be related to a change from overall crustal shortening to extensional tectonism in the Aegean region, caused by post-collisional roll-back of the subducting African slab along the Hellenic trench system.

    Description: The Catalina Schist (California) contains an amphibolite-grade (0.8–1.1 GPa; 640–750 jC) melange unit consisting of mafic and ultramafic blocks in high-Mg, schistose melange matrix with varying modal proportions of talc, chlorite, anthophyllite, calcic-amphibole, enstatite, and minor phases including zircon, rutile, apatite, spinel, and Fe–Ni sulfides. This melange unit is interpreted as a kilometer-scale zone of tectonic and metasomatic mixing formed within a juvenile subduction zone, the study of which may yield insight into chemical mixing processes at greater depths in subduction zones. Relationships among the major and trace element compositions of the mafic and ultramafic blocks in the melange, the rinds developed at the margins of these blocks, and the surrounding melange matrix are compatible with the evolution of the melange matrix through a complex combination of infiltrative and diffusional metasomatism and a process resembling mechanical mixing. Simple, linear mixing models are compatible with the development of the melange matrix primarily through simple mixture of the ultramafic and mafic rocks, with Cr/Al ratios serving as indicators of the approximate proportions of the two lithologies. This conclusion regarding mafic–ultramafic mixing is consistent with the field observations and chemical trends indicating strong resemblance of large parts of the melange matrix with rinds developed at the margins of mafic and ultramafic blocks. The overall process involved development of metasomatic assemblages through complex fluid-mediated mixing of the blocks and matrix concurrent with deformation of these relatively weak rind materials, which are rich in layer silicates and amphibole. This deformation was sufficiently intense to transpose fabrics, progressively disaggregate more rigid, block-derived materials in weaker chorite- and talc-rich melange, and in some particularly weak lithologies (e.g., chlorite-, talc-, and amphibole-rich materials), intimately juxtapose adjacent lithologies at the (sub-)cm scale (approaching grain scale) sampled by the whole-rock geochemical analyses. Chemical systematics of various elements in the melange matrix can be delineated based on the Cr/Al-based mixing model. Simple mixing relationships exhibited by Al, Cr, Mg, Ni, Fe, and Zr provide a geochemical reference frame for considerations of mass and volume loss and gain within the melange matrix. The compositional patterns of many other elements are explained by either redistribution (local stripping or enrichment) at varying scales within the melange (Ca, Na, K, Ba, and Sr) or massive addition from external sources (Si and H2O), the latter probably in infiltrating H2O-rich fluids that produced the dramatic O and H isotopic shifts in the melange. Melange formation, resulting in the production of high-variance ultramafic assemblages withhigh volatile contents, may aid retention of volatiles (in this case, H2O) to greater depths in subduction zones than in original subducted mafic and sedimentary materials. The presence of such assemblages (i.e., containing minerals such as talc, chlorite, and Mg-rich amphiboles) would impact the rheology of the slab–mantle interface and perhaps contribute to the low-velocity seismic structure observed at/near the slab–mantle interface in some subduction zones. If operative along the slab–mantle interface, complex mixing processes such as these, involving the interplay between fluid-mediated metasomatism and deformation, also could impact slab incompatible trace element and isotopic signatures ultimately observed in arc magmas, producing ‘‘fluids’’ with geochemical signatures inherited from interactions with hybridized rock compositions.

    Description: Miocene exhumation of metamorphic rocks in the Aegean Sea is partly a consequence of post-orogenic extension. If the post-orogenic mechanism of exhumation is rather well understood, the earlier syn-orogenic Eocene exhumation is still largely enigmatic. Previous authors have argued in terms of extension or compression. New structural and petrological data on Sifnos and Syros islands show that exhumation of high pressure–low temperature (HP–LT) rocks involves crustal-scale extensional ductile shear zones during the Eocene. We observe a continuum of top-to-the-NE and -E ductile shear from the Eocene (in the blueschist facies) to the Miocene (in the greenschist facies). This deformation is distributed in the eclogites and blueschists, whereas it is rather localised along ductile shear zones in the greenschists. Eclogites, which are preserved only at the top of the structural pile, are exhumed with a ‘cold’ retrograde P–T path. In the lower part of the structural pile we observe a progressive retrogression of eclogites in blueschist then greenschist facies. This lower part of pile is subsequently exhumed with P–T paths showing a nearly isothermal decompression before cooling. P–T–t-deformation data suggest that the Cycladic blueschists are progressively exhumed by a continuum of accretion at the base of the orogenic wedge, and by a partly non-coaxial extensional deformation above, distributed during the syn-orogenic stage, then localised during the post-orogenic stage. We then compare the mechanism of syn-orogenic exhumation of Crete and the Cyclades and we discuss a simple geodynamic scenario for the Aegean domain and the external Hellenides which accounts for (1) the southward migration of the Hellenic trench and arc during the Cenozoic; (2) the P–T–t-deformation data for the Cycladic blueschists and the Phyllite–quartzite nappe; and (3) the transition from syn-orogenic to post-orogenic in the Cyclades.

    Description: Protein synthesis is fundamental to all living organisms and it has been studied intensively and at varying levels of complexity. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of research on protein synthesis in fish, examines data to produce simple models describing protein synthesis in terms of key variables, and provides explanations for variations from expected or predicted rates of protein synthesis. The underlying there is to integrate information at the organismal level. A variety of methods for measuring protein synthesis have been used and comparison suggest they give similar results for fish. Major influences on protein synthesis are species, life-history stage, temperature, feeding, and nutrition. The effects of other factors such as pollutants, anoxia, salinity, and hormones have also been investigated. In growing fish between 20 and 50% of energy expenditure is associated with protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is, therefore, a major energy-demanding process in fish that is influenced by many environmental and biotic factors.

    Description: Since the early 1970s, marine chemists have gained a first-order understanding of the concentrations, distributions, and chemical behaviors of trace metals in seawater. Important factors initiating this quantum leap in knowledge were major advances in modern analytical chemistry and instrumentation, along with the development and adoption of clean techniques. An instrumental development in the mid-1970s that spurred the early research on trace metals was the availability of the sensitive graphite furnace as the sample introduction system to an atomic absorption spectrometer. More recently, the appearance of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometers has provided an even more sensitive and powerful instrumental capability to the arsenal of marine chemists. In addition to these instruments back in shore-based laboratories, there has been the development of sensitive shipboard methods such as stripping voltammetry and flow injection analysis (FIA) systems with either chemiluminescence or catalytically enhanced spectrophotometric detection. Along with the development of these highly sensitive analytical techniques came a recognition and appreciation of the importance of handling contamination issues by using clean techniques during all phases of sampling and analysis. This is necessary due to low concentrations of trace metals in seawater relative to the ubiquitousness of metals on a ship or in a laboratory (e.g., dust, steel hydrowire, rust, paint with copper and zinc antifouling agents, brass fittings, galvanized material, sacrificial zinc anodes, etc.). As a result, seawater concentrations of most trace metals have now been accurately determined in at least some parts of the oceans, and their oceanic distributions have been found to be consistent with oceanographic processes.The concentrations and distributions of trace metals in seawater are controlled by a combination of processes. These processes include external sources of trace metals delivered by rivers along ocean boundaries, by wind-blown dust from arid and semi-arid regions of the continents, and by hydrothermal circulation at mid-ocean ridges. Processes removing trace metals from seawater include active biological uptake or passive scavenging onto either living or nonliving particulate material. Much of this particulate material (along with its associated trace metals) is internally recycled either in the water column or in surficial sediments. The ultimate sink of trace metals is generally marine sediments. These various sources and sinks are superimposed on the general circulation and mixing of the oceans, resulting in the characteristic distributions of each trace metal. One of the first examples of the emergence of oceanographically consistent vertical profiles was for the trace-metal cadmium (Boyle et al., 1976; Martin et al., 1976; Bruland et al., 1978a). These studies demonstrated that the distribution of dissolved cadmium in the sea follows a pattern similar to that of the nutrients phosphate and nitrate. Sparked by these surprising results, several investigators during the following two decades were able to obtain excellent data sets on a wide variety of trace metals. This chapter will attempt to provide a basic overview of what is known about the controls of the concentrations and distributions of trace metals in the open ocean. Subtleties in their distributions will not be presented. The distributions of trace metals in coastal regions are more dynamic and complicated and will not be discussed in this chapter.The bulk of the data for vertical profiles of trace metals in seawater are from papers published in the 1980s and 1990s and most of the profiles are from either the North Pacific or North Atlantic. There is a paucity of vertical profiles from the South Atlanticand South Pacific. It has recently been argued that a new "GEOSECS"-type trace-metal program needs to be in place in order to provide appropriate global coverage of trace metals. Much of the impetus for such a program comes from the recognition of iron as an important micronutrient influencing global biogeochemical cycles in the oceans (Moore et al., 2002) and the potential role of other trace metals such as zinc. In particular, there is a pressing need for an expansion of the global database of dissolved iron distributions in the oceans. These measurements are needed to both initiate and verify models and to identify processes not contained in existing models.There have been a number of reviews of trace elements in seawater that form a foundation for this chapter. Among them are: Bruland (1983) on oceanographically consistent data sets; Burton and Statham (1990) on trace metals in seawater; and Donat and Bruland (1995) on trace elements in oceans. There are two reviews that deal with more of the biological role of trace metals: Bruland et al. (1991) on interactive influence of bioactive trace metals on biological production in ocean waters; and Hunter et al. (1997) on biological roles of trace metals in natural waters. A highly complementary chapter in this Treatise that deals with the influence of essential trace metals on biological processes has been written by Morel et al. (Chapter 6.05). Turning to "on-line" sources of information, Nozaki has done an excellent job perusing the available literature and compiling vertical profiles from the North Pacific for each element in a periodic table that makes an excellent figure (http://www.agu.org/eos_elec/97025e.html).     Description: This chapter discusses the chemical and biological aspects of melanin in condensed form. Melanin, the natural cosmetics of skin, hair, and feathers, represent broadly a group of natural and synthetic pigments of diverse origin and chemical functions. In nature, they usually occur in the form of insoluble fine granules accumulated in certain parts of animal and plant tissues. Some related synthetic melanins are also known. These are named after the compounds from which they were prepared via chemical and enzymatic oxidation, such as tyrosine-melanin, dopa-melanin, and catechol-melanin. The pigmentation of human skin has substantial protective, social, and cosmetic significance. Although melanins lack well-defined physical and spectral characteristics, they possess some effective chemical properties by acting as redox polymers, ion exchangers, and radical scavengers. The extensive studies of these chemical reactivities of melanin and putative melanin precursors have led researchers to infiltrate into many areas of scientific research, including the molecular biology of pigment-related genes.

    Description: In near-shore and coastal margin sediments remineralization of organic carbon is significantly affected by biologically mediated solute exchange caused by burrow-dwelling infauna. Although irrigation rates have been determined for various environments, little is known about their seasonal variations and their coupling to the food-supply or the oxygen level in bottom waters. These aspects have been investigated at two sites in the Kiel Bight by modelling pore water concentrations of Cl, which is a suitable tracer for transport processes. A very similar temporal pattern of irrigation was determined at both sites. In spring and fall the effect of bioirrigation on the pore water concentration of Cl is important at both sites, and a more than two to five fold enhancement of solute exchange, relative to diffusional transport, was calculated. The temporal pattern of bioirrigation correlates with that of the Chl.-a (eq) inventory of the surface sediments. Enhanced irrigation rates follow the settling of plankton blooms in this region. During the summer, when low oxygen levels were observed in bottom waters, overall irrigation rates are low. Furthermore, the relative importance of irrigation processes operating close to the sediment surface increases suggesting an upward movement and migration of burrow-dwelling organisms in response to low O2-concentrations. Because bioirrigation is an important transport process coupling organic carbon flux, remineralization at the seafloor, and redox zonation in the sediment quantifying the seasonal cycle of the irrigation intensity represents a step forward in the dynamic understanding of benthic processes.

    Description: In the Arabian Sea, productivity in the surface waters and particle flux to the deep sea are controlled by monsoonal winds. The flux maxima during the South-West (June–September) and the North-East Monsoon (December–March) are some of the highest particle fluxes recorded with deep-sea sediment traps in the open ocean. Benthic microbial biomass and activities in surface sediments were measured for the first time in March 1995 subsequent to the NE-monsoon and in October 1995 subsequent to the SW-monsoon. These measurements were repeated in April/May 1997 and February/March 1998, at a total of six stations from 1920 to 4420 m water depth. This paper presents a summary on the regional and temporal variability of microbial biomass, production, enzyme activity, degradation of Full-size image (〈1 K)-labeled Synechococcus material as well as sulfate reduction in the northern, western, eastern, central and southern Arabian deep sea. We found a substantial regional variation in microbial biomass and activity, with highest values in the western Arabian Sea (station WAST), decreasing approximately threefold to the south (station SAST). Benthic microbial biomass and activity during the NE-monsoon was as high or higher than subsequent to the SW-monsoon, indicating a very rapid turnover of POC in the surface sediments. This variation in the biomass and activity of the microbial assemblages in the Arabian deep sea can largely be explained by the regional and temporal variation in POC flux. Compared to other abyssal regions, the substantially higher benthic microbial biomasses and activities in the Arabian Sea reflect the extremely high productivity of this tropical basin.

    Description: A synopsis of results from two sediment trap moorings deployed at the mid- and outer slope (water depths 1450 and 3660 m, respectively) of the Goban Spur (N.E. Atlantic Margin) is presented. Fluxes increase with trap deployment depth; below 1000 m resuspended and advected material contributes increasingly to bulk flux. Fluxes of dry weight, POC and diatoms in the traps 400 m above bottom (mab) are smaller than those recorded at the sediment surface due to lateral fluxes in the benthic nepheloid layer. These near-bottom fluxes are larger at shallower water depths. 231Pa/230Th ratios in sedimenting material suggest that boundary scavenging is not significant at the Goban Spur. Fluxes of 210Pb in the intermediate and deep traps are comparable to the 210Pb supply rate at this site. At the outer slope, sediment 210Pb fluxes are similar to those measured in the traps 400 mab; at the mid-slope they are a factor of 2 higher, once again indicating large near-bottom lateral particle input. Based on POC-normalised biomarkers in sedimenting material, we followed changes in the quality of sedimenting material with differing trap depth and on seasonal and event-related time scales. In spring fresh, diatom-dominated sedimentation occurs, with progressive degradation of POC with time (to winter) and depth (from 600 to 3220 m). Deeper traps are distinguished on the basis of opal and aluminium fluxes that are dominant in lateral input. A storm event during late September 1993 was clearly reflected in the δ15N isotope ratio of sedimenting material, with a time lag of 2–3 weeks. Diatom and opal fluxes were elevated in this storm-related signal, and its biomarker composition in the 600-m trap was similar to that during spring. An estimate made of upward nitrate flux (new production) at the shelf break and at the outer slope indicated a 2-fold higher new (export) production at the shelf break. Particulate organic carbon export from the shelf break to below the depth of maximal seasonal mixing ranges between 3 and 9% of primary production.

    Description: A coupled ice–ocean model is utilized to investigate the transports of heat, salt and water in the Baltic Sea for the years 1986, 1988, 1993 and 1994. The oceanic component of the coupled system is a three-dimensional baroclinic model of the Baltic Sea including the Belt Sea and the Skagerrak/Kattegat area. The model has a horizontal resolution of ∼5 km and 28 vertical levels specified. The ice model is based on the Hamburg Sea Ice model, with the same horizontal resolution. The coupled system is driven by atmospheric data provided by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI; Norrköping, Sweden) and river runoff taken from a monthly mean runoff database. The thermohaline variability of the Baltic Sea strongly depends on the fluctuations of the atmospheric forcing conditions. Therefore, high demands on the spatial and temporal resolution of the meteorological forcing are required. Besides heat and radiation fluxes, precipitation and evaporation rates have to be taken into account. From the coupled runs, the different components determining the energy and water cycle of the Baltic Sea are identified and estimates of the water, heat and salt transports are given for the different years. Furthermore, the thermohaline variability is investigated with respect to the relevant forcing mechanisms including atmospheric, as well as fresh water fluxes. Besides the heat and water fluxes of the Baltic Sea and the water mass exchange with the North Sea, internal fluxes of heat, salt and volume between the different subbasins of the Baltic Sea are presented. Sensitivity studies on the variation of the net fresh water flux indicate that uncertainties in precipitation and/or river runoff can have a strong impact on the inflow of highly saline water from the North Sea, thus, influencing the thermohaline circulation of the Baltic Sea.

    Description: Measurements of δ18O and δ13C isotopes in three benthic foraminiferal species from surface sediments of the eastern Laptev Sea are compared to water δ18O values and δ13C values of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Samples investigated originate from two environmentally contrasting core locations, which are influenced by riverine freshwater runoff to a varying degree. At the river-distal site, located within relatively stable marine conditions on the outer shelf, Elphidiella groenlandica, Haynesina orbiculare and Elphidium excavatum forma clavata show a positive specific offset of 1.4‰, 1.5‰ and 1‰, respectively, in their δ18O values relative to the expected value for inorganic calcite precipitated under equilibrium conditions. At the site close to the Lena River confluence, with enhanced seasonal hydrographic contrasts, calculated δ18O offsets in E. groenlandica and in H. orbiculare remain about the same whereas E. e. clavata displays a distinctly negative offset of −1.8‰. The δ18O variation in E. e. clavata is interpreted as a vital effect, a finding which limits the potential of this species for reconstructing freshwater-influenced shelf paleoenvironments on the basis of oxygen isotopes. This interpretation gains support when comparing foraminiferal δ13C with the δ13CDIC of the water. While some of the difference in the carbonate δ13C seems to be controlled by a riverine-related admixture of DIC, clearly defined δ13C ranges in each of the three foraminifera at the river-proximal site shows that also the carbon isotopic signature in E. e. clavata is particularly affected by environmental factors.

    Description: Fluid and melt inclusions in minerals of two native iron-bearing dyke rocks from Disko, Greenland, were investigated using heating and cooling microscopic techniques. The melt inclusions in olivine are homogenized at temperatures of 1170–1200 °C. The melts are characterized by high SiO2, K2O and TiO2 and low MgO contents. The co-existence of combined melt–fluid (gas) inclusions in olivine implies that the olivine phenocrysts crystallized from a heterogeneous magma at low pressure. Gas bubbles were investigated in the glass of the rock. Water and four crystalline phases were observed at room and low temperatures on the walls of the bubbles: serpentine, naphthalene, clathrate, and an unknown phase. The complex composition of trapped volatiles is reflected in considerable ranges of clathrate melting and solidus temperatures (20 to 7.5 °C and −82.6 to −73 °C, respectively). Melt equilibrium with metallic iron at T=1450 K suggests that logfO2=−13.95. The calculated composition of C–O–H fluid in equilibrium with Fe, Fe3C and FeS is characterized by high CH4 and H2 contents. During cooling at the postmagmatic stage, polymerization proceeds, and heavy hydrocarbons are formed inside vesicles. The presence of organic compounds in inclusions trapped at a magmatic stage is a natural consequence of unusual reducing condition during crystallization.

    Description: The Hamburg Ocean Primitive Equation model has undergone significant development in recent years. Most notable is the treatment of horizontal discretisation which has undergone transition from a staggered E-grid to an orthogonal curvilinear C-grid. The treatment of subgridscale mixing has been improved by the inclusion of a new formulation of bottom boundary layer (BBL) slope convection, an isopycnal diffusion scheme, and a Gent and McWilliams style eddy-induced mixing parameterisation. The model setup described here has a north pole over Greenland and a south pole on the coast of the Weddell Sea. This gives relatively high resolution in the sinking regions associated with the thermohaline circulation. Results are presented from a 450 year climatologically forced integration. The forcing is a product of the German Ocean Model Intercomparison Project and is derived from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting reanalysis. The main emphasis is on the model's representation of key quantities that are easily associated with the ocean's role in the global climate system. The global and Atlantic northward poleward heat transports have peaks of 1.43 and 0.84 PW, at 18degrees and 21degrees N respectively. The Atlantic meridional overturning streamfunction has a peak of 15.7 Sv in the North Atlantic and an outflow of 11.9 Sv at 30degrees S. Comparison with a simulation excluding BBL shows that the scheme is responsible for up to a 25% increase in North Atlantic heat transport, with significant improvement of the depths of convection in the Greenland, Labrador and Irminger Seas. Despite the improvements, comparison with observations shows the heat transport still to be too weak. Other outstanding problems include an incorrect Gulf Stream pathway, a too strong Antarctic Circumpolar Current, and a too weak renewal of Antarctic Intermediate Water. Nevertheless, the model has been coupled to the atmospheric GCM ECHAM5 and run successfully for over 250 years without any surface flux corrections. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.     Description: Extensive methane hydrate layers are formed in the near-surface sediments of the Cascadia margin. An undissociated section of such a layer was recovered at the base of a gravity core (i.e. at a sediment depth of 120 cm) at the southern summit of Hydrate Ridge. As a result of salt exclusion during methane hydrate formation, the associated pore waters show a highly elevated chloride concentration of 809 mM. In comparison, the average background value is 543 mM. A simple transport-reaction model was developed to reproduce the Cl- observations and quantify processes such as hydrate formation, methane demand, and fluid flow. From this first field observation of a positive Cl- anomaly, high hydrate formation rates (0.15–1.08 mol cm-2 a-1) were calculated. Our model results also suggest that the fluid flow rate at the Cascadia accretionary margin is constrained to 45–300 cm a-1. The amount of methane needed to build up enough methane hydrate to produce the observed chloride enrichment exceeds the methane solubility in pore water. Thus, most of the gas hydrate was most likely formed from ascending methane gas bubbles rather than solely from CH4 dissolved in the pore water.

    Description: A composite record (LO09-14) of three sediment cores from the subpolar North Atlantic (Reykjanes Ridge) was investigated in order to assess surface ocean variability during the last 11 kyr. The core site is today partly under the influence of the Irminger Current (IC), a branch of the North Atlantic Drift continuing northwestward around Iceland. However, it is also proximal to the Sub-Arctic Front (SAF) that may cause extra dynamic hydrographic conditions. We used statistical methods applied to the fossil assemblages of diatoms to reconstruct quantitative sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Our investigations give evidence for different regional signatures of Holocene surface oceanographic changes in the North Atlantic. Core LO09-14 reveal relatively low and highly variable SSTs during the early Holocene, indicating a weak IC and increased advection of subpolar water over the site. A mid-Holocene thermal optimum with a strong IC occurs from 7.5 to 5 kyr and is followed by cooler and more stable late Holocene surface conditions. Several intervals throughout the Holocene are dominated by the diatom species Rhizosolenia borealis, which we suggest indicates proximity to a strongly defined convergence front, most likely the SAF. Several coolings, reflecting southeastward advection of cold and ice-bearing waters, occur at 10.4, 9.8, 8.3, 7.9, 6.4, 4.7, 4.3 and 2.8 kyr. The cooling events recorded in the LO09-14 SSTs correlate well with both other surface records from the area and the NADW reductions observed at ODP Site 980 indicating a surface-deepwater linkage through the Holocene.

    Description: Variability in the chemical composition, textures and electrical properties of the major sulphide mineral pyrite may be one cause of variation in the flotation and leaching properties of different sulphide ores. This report summarises the results of a review that has been conducted to establish the range in variability of natural pyrite with regard to chemical composition, texture and electrical properties. The S/Fe ratio in pyrite is generally very close to 2, suggesting that stoichiometric variability is small in this mineral. However, minor deviations from the ideal are reported. Pyrite typically contains a host of minor and trace elements, including: Ag, As, Au, Bi, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, Pd, Ru, Sb, Se, Sb, Sn, Te, Tl and Zn. Minor elements are often present within the mineral lattice at levels up to several percent, these include; As, Co, Ni, Sb and possibly Cu, Ag, Au and Sn. Arsenian pyrites may contain up to 10% As, and such specimens are typically rich in other minor and trace elements, particularly Au. As-rich pyrites typically appear to have formed at relatively low temperatures and often exhibit habits that suggest rapid precipitation; these As-rich pyrites may be metastable and, therefore, relatively reactive. Considerable variation has been reported in the semiconducting properties of pyrite. Natural pyrites are either n- or p-type semiconductors and reported conductivities vary by four orders of magnitude. The rates of galvanic processes in mineral pulps are likely to vary with the mineral conductivities. Typically p-type pyrites exhibit low conductivities and are As-rich and are suggested to have formed at relatively low temperature, whereas relatively highly conducting n-type pyrites are typically As-poor and suggested to have formed at high temperature. Based on comparative measurements of rest potential, iron pyrite is the most electrochemically inert of the common sulphide minerals, with a rest potential of the order of 0.6 (cf. sphalerite and galena with rest potentials of 0.46 and 0.40 V. vs. SHE, respectively). Variability in the rest potential of different samples of this mineral are generally small. However, based on the extent of pyrite reaction during a peroxide dissolution procedure, the chemical reactivity of pyrite samples may differ significantly.

    Description: We have developed a model of fluid flow and pressure development in sedimentary basins that incorporates pore volume loss due to mechanical compaction and to chemical diagenesis (quartz cementation, grain contact quartz dissolution and illitization). Mechanical compaction is modeled to be a function of effective stress. In this model, pore volume loss due to mechanical compaction will be retarded when overpressure develops. The diagenetic processes are modeled as being kinetically controlled and the reaction progress depends only on the temperature history. Hence pore volume loss due to chemical compaction is not retarded by overpressure. By including diagenetic effects on overpressure development, the pressure model should be more generally applicable than models that consider mechanical compaction to be the sole process that reduces porosity. To demonstrate the potential importance of chemical compaction in the formation of fluid overpressures in different settings, we calibrated our model with data obtained from the Halten Terrace offshore mid-Norway and from the Gulf of Mexico. In both cases, the diagenetic processes have the potential to control on the timing and magnitude of overpressuring. From 25% and up to 80% of the present-day overpressure may be caused by pore volume loss resulting from diagenetic reactions. Pressure build-up from diagenetic processes also potentially controls the timing of hydraulic fracturing. If diagenetic processes are actively contributing to overpressure generation, then unrealistically low shale permeabilities are not needed to retain overpressures for geologic time periods (〉10 My).

    Description: A continuous lacustrine sequence from the western part of Lama Lake (69°32′N, 90°12′E), complemented by a peat sequence from the lake catchment provides the first detailed environmental reconstruction for the Late Glacial and Holocene on the Taymyr Peninsula. Scarce steppe-like communities with Artemisia, Poaceae, and Cyperaceae dominated during the Late Glacial. Tundra-like communities with Betula nana, Dryas, and Salix grew on more mesic sites. There are distinct climatic signals, which may be correlated with the Bølling and Allerød warming and Middle and Younger Dryas cooling. The Late Glacial/Preboreal transition, at about 10,000 14C yr BP, was characterized by changes from predominantly open herb communities to shrub tundra ones. Larch forest might have been established as early as 9700–9600 14C yr BP, whilst shrub alder came to the area ca 9500–9400 14C yr BP, and spruce did not reach area before ca 9200 14C yr BP. Spruce-larch forests with shrub alder and tree birch dominated the vegetation around the Lama Lake from ca 9000 14C yr BP. Dwarf birch communities were also broadly distributed. The role of spruce in the forest gradually decreased after 4500 14C yr BP. The vegetation cover in the Lama Lake area became similar to the modern larch-spruce forest ca 2500 14C yr BP. A pollen-based biome reconstruction supports a quantitative interpretation of the pollen spectra. Climate reconstructions obtained with information-statistical and plan-functional-type methods show very similar trends in reconstructed July temperature since ca 12,300 14C yr BP, while precipitation anomalies are less coherent, especially during the Late Glacial–Holocene transition.

    Description: Radiocarbon-dated pollen, rhizopod, chironomid and total organic carbon (TOC) records from Nikolay Lake (73°20′N, 124°12′E) and a pollen record from a nearby peat sequence are used for a detailed environmental reconstruction of the Holocene in the Lena Delta area. Shrubby Alnus fruticosa and Betula exilis tundra existed during 10,300–4800 cal. yr BP and gradually disappeared after that time. Climate reconstructions based on the pollen and chironomid records suggest that the climate during ca. 10,300–9200 cal. yr BP was up to 2–3 °C warmer than the present day. Pollen-based reconstructions show that the climate was relatively warm during 9200–6000 cal. yr BP and rather unstable between ca. 5800–3700 cal. yr BP. Both the qualitative interpretation of pollen data and the results of quantitative reconstruction indicate that climate and vegetation became similar to modern-day conditions after ca. 3600 cal. yr BP. The chironomid-based temperature reconstruction suggests a relatively warm period between ca. 2300 and 1400 cal. yr BP, which corresponds to the slightly warmer climate conditions reconstructed from the pollen. Modern chironomid and rhizopod assemblages were established after ca. 1400 cal. yr BP.

    Description: A decrease in temperature (ΔT up to 45.5 °C) and chloride concentration (ΔCl up to 4.65 mol/l) characterises the brine–seawater boundary in the Atlantis-II, Discovery, and Kebrit Deeps of the Red Sea, where redox conditions change from anoxic to oxic over a boundary layer several meters thick. High-resolution (100 cm) profiles of the methane concentration, stable carbon isotope ratio of methane, and redox-sensitive tracers (O2, Mn4+/Mn2+, Fe3+/Fe2+, and SO42−) were measured across the brine–seawater boundary layer to investigate methane fluxes and secondary methane oxidation processes. Substantial amounts of thermogenic hydrocarbons are found in the deep brines (mostly methane, with a maximum concentration up to 4.8×105 nmol/l), and steep methane concentration gradients mainly controlled by diffusive flow characterize the brine–seawater boundary (maximum of 2×105 nmol/l/m in Kebrit Deep). However, locally the actual methane concentration profiles deviate from theoretical diffusion-controlled concentration profiles and extremely positive δ13C–CH4 values can be found (up to +49‰ PDB in the Discovery Deep). Both, the actual CH4 concentration profiles and the carbon-13 enrichment in the residual CH4 of the Atlantis-II and Discovery Deeps indicate consumption (oxidation) of 12C-rich CH4 under suboxic conditions (probably utilizing readily available—up to 2000 μmol/l—Mn(IV)-oxihydroxides as electron acceptor). Thus, a combined diffusion–oxidation model was used to calculate methane fluxes of 0.3–393 kg/year across the brine–seawater boundary layer. Assuming steady-state conditions, this slow loss of methane from the brines into the Red Sea bottom water reflects a low thermogenic hydrocarbon input into the deep brines.

    Description: Hydrothermal gases from shallow seafloor vents in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand contain CO2, CH4, and the higher gaseous hydrocarbons up to i-, n-C4H10. The gases are similar to those discharged at fumaroles on the nearby White Island. Carbon isotope compositions for CO2 fall between −3.4‰ and −5.5‰ PDB and reflect a shallow magmatic carbon source. The δ13C values of CH4 range from −24.6‰ to −28.9‰ PDB and the δD values vary between −122‰ and −135‰ SMOW. The CH4 isotope values and the presence of the higher hydrocarbon compounds such as C2H6 and C3H8 with δ13C values near −20‰ PDB suggest hydrocarbon production by high-temperature maturation of sedimentary organic matter and mixing (∼1:1) of the thermogenic CH4 with abiogenic CH4. Long-chained hydrocarbons occur in dredged samples close to the active vents. Their n-alkane distribution has a high to moderate odd–even predominance and an extensive hopane series, indicative of higher land-plant waxes and prokaryotic membranes in the source. Substantial amounts of unsubstituted polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) mark the transition from aliphatic- to aromatic-dominated bitumens, consistent with extensive source maturation resulting from thermal stress. The bitumens are interpreted as pyrolysates derived from buried near-coastal vegetation and terrestrial detritus under various thermal regimes, mixed with immature seafloor organic matter.

    Description: Review is given about the main results of the oceanographic component of the BALTEX research programme (one of the six continental scale experiments within GEWEX-WCRP to study water and energy cycles in the regional climate system) and related programmes/projects over the last 10 years. Working closely together with two other components – regional meteorology and hydrology of the Baltic Sea drainage basin – oceanographic research has considerably improved the understanding of and ability to model the Baltic Sea marine system. In the Baltic Sea physics seven different broad topics are identified where knowledge has significantly improved. These are reviewed together with a discussion of gaps in knowledge. The focus is on the water and energy cycles of the Baltic Sea, but various aspects of forcing and validation data and modelling are also discussed. The major advances achieved through BALTEX and related programmes are: • Meteorological, hydrological, ocean and ice data are now available for the research community. • Progress in understanding of the strong impact of large-scale atmospheric circulation on Baltic Sea circulation, water mass exchange, sea ice evolution, and changes in the ocean conditions of the Baltic Sea. • Progress in understanding of the importance of strait flows in the exchange of water into and within the Baltic Sea. • Progress in understanding of intra-basin processes. • Ocean models introduced into Baltic Sea water and energy studies. • Development of turbulence models and 3D ocean circulation models for application to the Baltic Sea. • Improved Baltic Sea ice modelling and increased understanding of the need for coupled atmosphere–ice–ocean-land models.

    Description: A systematic intercomparison of three realistic eddy-permitting models of the North Atlantic circulation has been performed. The models use different concepts for the discretization of the vertical coordinate, namely geopotential levels, isopycnal layers, terrain-following (sigma) coordinates, respectively. Although these models were integrated under nearly identical conditions, the resulting large-scale model circulations show substantial differences. The results demonstrate that the large-scale thermohaline circulation is very sensitive to the model representation of certain localised processes, in particular to the amount and water mass properties of the overflow across the Greenland–Scotland region, to the amount of mixing within a few hundred kilometers south of the sills, and to several other processes at small or sub-grid scales. The different behaviour of the three models can to a large extent be explained as a consequence of the different model representation of these processes.

    Description: The accurate dating of fossil coral reefs is of prime importance in determining the timing of deglaciation events and thus understanding the mechanisms driving glacial–interglacial cycles. So far, the most useful coral reef records of past sea level changes are those related to the last deglaciation and the Last Interglacial period. U/Th ages for older isotopic stages are more limited, due to the scarcity of datable material, reflecting diagenetic alteration. Most data are from emergent parts of reefs and reef terraces in active subduction zones where relative sea level records may be biased by variations in rates of tectonic uplift. New constraints on sea level changes over the past 300 000 yr are based on high-precision U-series age measurements of successive reef units on Mururoa. These have been cored in four continuous 300-m-long drill holes with seaward inclinations of 30 to 45° on the northeastern rim of the atoll. Past sea level positions have been calculated from the radiometric ages of corals by correcting the present depth of subsurface horizons both for thermal subsidence and for depositional palaeodepth. The location of this atoll at a considerable distance from former ice sheets (‘far field’) minimises the influence of glacio–isostatic rebound. Prominent units formed during four periods of relative sea level highstands, including the Holocene and stages 5 (∼125 ka), 7 (∼212 ka) and 9 (∼332 ka). These are primarily composed of coralgal frameworks that grew in very shallow water. Three periods of relative low stand correspond to stages 2 (∼17–23 ka), 4 (∼60 ka) and 8 (∼270 ka) during which small reefs developed in association with large bioclastic accumulations. Good agreement with the timing of sea level changes based on oxygen isotope measurements in deep-sea cores is noted for most of the dated reef units. We report here the first accurate coral record of the Last Glacial Maximum in the Pacific, 135–143 m below the present sea surface, suggesting that sea level may have been lower than expected during this period.

    Description: An α-spectrometric method for the rapid determination of radium isotopes (223Ra, 224Ra and 226Ra) in environmental samples is presented. Using EmporeTM Radium Rad Disks complete separation of the target radionuclides is achieved. The high selectivity of these Rad Disks allows the straightforward use of 225Ra as yield tracer. Chemical yield is up to 92±9%. The chemical procedure can be accomplished within 5 h. α-Sources show energy resolution in the range of typically 26–40 keV (FWHM). Despite minimal thickness of the sources no significant radon (Rn) losses can be observed.

    Description: The Hf isotope composition of seawater does not match that expected from dissolution of bulk continental crust. This mismatch is generally considered to be due to retention of unradiogenic Hf in resistant zircons during incomplete weathering of continental crust. During periods of intense glacial weathering, zircons should break down more efficiently, resulting in the release of highly unradiogenic Hf to the oceans. We test this hypothesis by comparing Nd and Hf isotope time series obtained from NW Atlantic ferromanganese crusts. Both isotope systems show a decrease associated with the onset of northern hemisphere glaciation. The observed changes display distinct trajectories in ϵNd–ϵHf space, which differ from previously reported arrays of bulk terrestrial material and seawater. Such patterns are consistent with the release of highly unradiogenic Hf from very old zircons, facilitated by enhanced mechanical weathering

    Description: A method for the continuous underway determination of Fe(II) in polar waters is reported. Surface seawater is pumped into a shipboard clean room container using a towed fish with Teflon diaphragm pump. Fe(II) was determined by flow injection analysis using a modified FeLume. The seawater is filtered in-line and the sample containing Fe(II) is mixed with luminol (buffered to pH 10) inside a flow cell and the resulting luminescence signal measured by a Hamamatsu HC-135 photon counter linked to a laptop computer. No preconcentration of the samples was applied, to reduce possible interferences and increase the sampling frequency. The system was utilised during EISENEX, a meso-scale iron enrichment experiment sample in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. In EISENEX, when surveying the iron enriched patch, a sample was analysed every 110 s (60 s loading time and 50 s for analysis). The detection limit, as determined by analysis of seawater (maintained at 4 °C to minimise oxidation) spiked with known concentrations of Fe(II), ranged from 25 to 133 pM. The system was also applied to vertical profiles of Fe(II) during EISENEX.

    Description: Most simple models for cooling of sheet like intrusions, the Hawaiian lava lakes being one example, neglect the effect of side wall heat loss on the overall thermal evolution. In this paper we extend a conventional one-dimensional (1D) model for cooling of sheet like intrusions to account for lateral heat loss by either prescribing a fixed side wall heat flux, or a heat flux controlled by heat transport in the surrounding wall rock. In the first part of the study we analyze the general interplay between side wall cooling and the thermal evolution of the system; the second part focuses on a comparison between our modeling results including models without and with lateral heat flux, and the Hawaiian lava lake data. This comparison leads to the following three main conclusions: (1) Side wall cooling does have a significant impact on the cooling history of lava lakes. (2) Models assuming a time dependent temperature profile in the wall rock lead to a better fit with the measured temperature data. (3) Due to the sluggish conductive heat transfer in the mush its thermal evolution is significantly decoupled from the temperature evolution of the convecting bulk liquid.

    Description: The behavior of dissolved Hf in the marine environment is not well understood due to the lack of direct seawater measurements of Hf isotopes and the limited number of Hf isotope time-series obtained from ferromanganese crusts. In order to place better constraints on input sources and develop further applications, a combined Nd-Hf isotope time-series study of five Pacific ferromanganese crusts was carried out. The samples cover the past 38 Myr and their locations range from sites at the margin of the ocean to remote areas, sites from previously unstudied North and South Pacific areas, and water depths corresponding to deep and bottom waters. For most of the samples a broad coupling of Nd and Hf isotopes is observed. In the Equatorial Pacific εNd and εHf both decrease with water depth. Similarly, εNd and εHf both increase from the South to the North Pacific. These data indicate that the Hf isotopic composition is, in general terms, a suitable tracer for ocean circulation, since inflow and progressive admixture of bottom water is clearly identifiable. The time-series data indicate that inputs and outputs have been balanced throughout much of the late Cenozoic. A simple box model can constrain the relative importance of potential input sources to the North Pacific. Assuming steady state, the model implies significant contributions of radiogenic Nd and Hf from young circum-Pacific arcs and a subordinate role of dust inputs from the Asian continent for the dissolved Nd and Hf budget of the North Pacific. Some changes in ocean circulation that are clearly recognizable in Nd isotopes do not appear to be reflected by Hf isotopic compositions. At two locations within the Pacific Ocean a decoupling of Nd and Hf isotopes is found, indicating limited potential for Hf isotopes as a stand-alone oceanographic tracer and providing evidence of additional local processes that govern the Hf isotopic composition of deep water masses. In the case of the Southwest Pacific there is evidence that decoupling may have been the result of changes in weathering style related to the buildup of Antarctic glaciation.

    Description: The ‘International Intercomparison Exercise of fCO2 Systems’ was carried out in 1996 during the R/V Meteor Cruise 36/1 from Bermuda/UK to Gran Canaria/Spain. Nine groups from six countries (Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, USA) participated in this exercise, bringing together 15 participants with seven underway fugacity of carbon dioxide (fCO2) systems, one discrete fCO2 system, and two underway pH systems, as well as systems for discrete measurement of total alkalinity and total dissolved inorganic carbon. Here, we compare surface seawater fCO2 measured synchronously by all participating instruments. A common infrastructure (seawater and calibration gas supply), different quality checks (performance of calibration procedures for CO2, temperature measurements) and a common procedure for calculation of final fCO2 were provided to reduce the largest possible amount of controllable sources of error. The results show that under such conditions underway measurements of the fCO2 in surface seawater and overlying air can be made to a high degree of agreement (±1 μatm) with a variety of possible equilibrator and system designs. Also, discrete fCO2 measurements can be made in good agreement (±3 μatm) with underway fCO2 data sets. However, even well-designed systems, which are operated without any obvious sign of malfunction, can show significant differences of the order of 10 μatm. Based on our results, no “best choice” for the type of the equilibrator nor specifics on its dimensions and flow rates of seawater and air can be made in regard to the achievable accuracy of the fCO2 system. Measurements of equilibrator temperature do not seem to be made with the required accuracy resulting in significant errors in fCO2 results. Calculation of fCO2 from high-quality total dissolved inorganic carbon (CT) and total alkalinity (AT) measurements does not yield results comparable in accuracy and precision to fCO2 measurements.

    Description: In the present work responses of carp (Cyprinus carpio) head kidney-derived neutrophils to the blood parasite T. borreli, and the consequences of these responses for parasite survival and other host response mechanisms, were studied. In co-cultures of head kidney leucocytes (HKL) with viable and lysed T. borreli a prominent shape change of neutrophilic granulocytes towards increased size and complexity was observed. In addition, the longevity of neutrophils in vitro was prolonged in the presence of T. borreli antigens. In these cultures, neutrophils also exhibited an increased phagocytosis activity. An up regulation of the production of nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) was observed in T. borreli- and mitogen-stimulated HKL cultures. However, addition of live, fluorescence-labelledT. borreli to previously stimulated HKL cultures, revealed neither killing nor phagocytosis of the parasite by activated neutrophils. Moreover, viable T. borreli, when added to HKL cultures of infected carp, reduced their phagocytosis activity and NO production. Supernatants of co-cultures between T. borreli and HKL also contained mediators, which suppressed a mitogen-induced proliferative response of peripheral blood leucocytes (PBL) in vitro. Thus, while T. borreli itself appeared not to be sensitive to responses of activated neutrophils, the flagellates interferes with the production of immunomodulatory signals of these cells, probably resulting in a partial immunosuppression, which may favour the parasite development in vivo.

    Description: Seismic reflection observations from the IMERSE cruise have confirmed the presence of at least two localised thick evaporite basins on the crest and Inner Plateau of the Mediterranean Ridge accretionary complex. The discovery is supported by interval velocity results from both near-normal incidence reflection data and wide-angle seismic data. These evaporite basins are located north of a deep trough known as the Cleft and at a currently active thrust zone south of the Cleft, on the crest of the Mediterranean Ridge. The polarity of the seismic reflections associated with the base of the evaporite shows a phase reversal relative to the seafloor. This high amplitude phase reversed reflection indicates a decrease in velocity between the evaporite and the underlying sediment. The existence of these thick evaporite deposits suggests that the distribution of Messinian salt is much thicker (∼1.8–2 km) on parts of the Ridge crest than initially perceived by previous investigations. We propose that these thick evaporite deposits were deposited in localised basins on the Ridge, formed in response to pre- and syn-Messinian tectonics. The evaporites on the Inner Plateau basin most likely represent the infill of a Messinian forearc basin. The existence of local deep evaporite basins on the crest of the Ridge at depths of 2.7–3.3 km below sea level at the present day supports the hypothesis that the Mediterranean Sea level must have dropped by around 3 km below its present sea level during the Messinian salinity crisis.

    Description: A numerical model was applied to investigate and to quantify biogeochemical processes and methane turnover in gas hydrate-bearing surface sediments from a cold vent site situated at Hydrate Ridge, an accretionary structure located in the Cascadia Margin subduction zone. Steady state simulations were carried out to obtain a comprehensive overview on the activity in these sediments which are covered with bacterial mats and are affected by strong fluid flow from below. The model results underline the dominance of advective fluid flow that forces a large inflow of methane from below (869 mumol cm(-2) a(-1)) inducing high oxidation rates in the surface layers. Anaerobic methane oxidation is the major process, proceeding at a depth-integrated rate of 870 mumol cm(-2) a(-1). A significant fraction (14%) of bicarbonate produced by anaerobic methane oxidation is removed from the fluids by precipitation of authigenic aragonite and calcite. The total rate of carbonate precipitation (120 mumol cm(-2) a(-1)) allows for the build-up of a massive carbonate layer with a thickness of I m over a period of 20,000 years. Aragonite is the major carbonate mineral formed by anaerobic methane oxidation if the flow velocity of methane-charge fluids is high enough ( greater than or equal to10 cm a(-1)) to maintain super-saturation with respect to this highly soluble carbonate phase. It precipitates much faster within the studied surface sediments than previously observed in abiotic laboratory experiments, suggesting microbial catalysis. The investigated station is characterized by high carbon and oxygen turnover rates (approximate to1000 mumol cm(-2) a(-1)) that are well beyond the rates observed at other continental slope sites not affected by fluid venting. This underlines the strong impact of fluid venting on the benthic system, even though the flow velocity of 10 cm a(-1) derived by the model is relative low compared to fluid flow rates found at other cold vent sites. Non-steady state simulations using measured fluid flow velocities as forcing demonstrate a rapid respond of the sediments within a few days to changes in advective flow. Moreover, they reveal that efficient methane oxidation in these sediments prevents methane outflow into the bottom water over a wide range of fluid flow velocities (〈80 cm a(-1)). Only at flow rates exceeding approximately 100 cm a(-1), does dissolved methane break through the sediment surface to induce large fluxes of up to 5000 mumol CH4 cm(2) a(-1) into the overlying bottom water.

    Description: We present comprehensive radiogenic isotope (Os, Pb, Hf, Nd, Sr) and trace element data on basaltic lavas from Pitcairn Island and the Pitcairn seamounts and examine the origin of the enriched mantle isotopic signature (EM-1) found in these lavas. The 187Os/188Os ratios of the lavas range from 0.131 to 0.254, while those of the high-Os concentration samples (〉50 pg/g) lie between 0.131 and 0.148. All 187Os/188Os ratios are higher than the bulk silicate Earth reference value of 0.127. Since ancient subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) is expected to have a 187Os/188Os ratio less than 0.127, it appears that recycled SCLM plays no role in the Pitcairn source. Variations in 187Os/188Os ratios appear to be unconnected with those of 206Pb/204Pb ratios in Pitcairn lavas, suggesting that Pb and Os isotopic variations are controlled by different factors. Modeling shows that variations in Pb isotopic compositions may mainly reflect the proportion of recycled sediment in the source, while those of 187Os/188Os ratios may reflect the proportion of peridotite mantle versus recycled oceanic crust. The occurrence of negative Nb anomalies in some of the lavas, a correlation between Nb anomaly and 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7036–0.7051), and extremely unradiogenic and strongly correlated Nd and Hf isotopic compositions (ϵNd of −5.9 to +1.1 and ϵHf of −5.3 to +2.2) together suggest that the Pitcairn mantle source contains a recycled continental crustal component. The slope of the ϵHf vs. ϵNd correlation is shallower for Pitcairn Island than for the Pitcairn seamounts or the global OIB array, and may be due to a variable ratio of recycled mud to sand in the Pitcairn source. A trace element mixing model also indicates the presence of small amounts of recycled pelagic and terrigenous sediment and permits variable amounts of depleted components such as recycled MORB, gabbro and depleted mantle. The 206Pb/204Pb ratios of the Pitcairn lavas vary between 17.47 and 18.10 and are very unradiogenic compared to those of other ocean island basalts. By contrast, 208Pb/204Pb ratios are high and relatively homogeneous at values of ∼39.0. This observation along with the measured Th/U ratios of the lavas, which range up to 14.1, indicate a long-term history of U loss in the Pitcairn source. In 207Pb/204Pb–206Pb/204Pb space, the data form a linear array that can be interpreted in terms of mixing between a minor recycled sediment end member and more depleted material. Lead isotopic compositions suitable for the recycled end member were investigated using a three-stage evolution model by Monte Carlo methods and suggest ages between 0.7 and 1.9 Ga for the recycled sediment. The relationships between measured Th/U and radiogenic 208Pb*/206Pb* ratios suggest that the isotopic arrays displayed by the lavas were produced by mixing, probably occurring during magma genesis.

    Description: The present study is the first comprehensive phylogeny of the class of the Phaeophyceae. For 67 species representing all orders of the class, the sequences of the 3’-end of the small and the 5ˈ-end of the large subunit nrRNA genes were aligned and analysed. A further analysis based on sequences of the 3’-end of the small and of the complete sequences of the 28S gene of the large subunits was also performed, but for only eight taxa. In both analyses, Tribonema marinum (Xanthophyceae) was used as outgroup. The analyses showed the Dictyotales as diverging first, followed by the Sphacelariales, then the Syringodermatales. Most of the orders currently accepted were confirmed as monophyletic groups but the Laminariales and Tilopteridales remained polyphyletic. The relationships of the remaining orders to each other were not resolved with the present data set. Ascoseira, included for the first time in a molecular study, appeared as a separate lineage without any clear relationship with other algae possessing conceptacles (Splachnidium and Fucales). Algae with stellate plastids, never studied in a global context, were polyphyletic; this result is consistent with their plastid ultrastructure and is discussed in detail. As further result of the present study, the South African genus Bifurcariopsis appeared as the sister taxon of the North Atlantic genus Himanthalia, and Xiphophora appeared as the sister taxon of Hormosira rather than as a member of the Fucaceae; the taxonomic position of these genera is discussed.

    Description: This paper shows that the mean flow of an eddy-permitting model can be altered by assimilation of surface height variability, providing that information about the mean sea surface is included, using an adaption of a statistical–dynamical method devised by Oschlies and Willebrand. We show that for a restricted depth range (about 1000 m), dynamical knowledge can make up for the null space present in surface data whose temporal extent may be too short to distinguish between vertical modes. The lack of an accurate geoid has meant that most assimilation methods, while representing variability well, have been unable to modify the mean flow to any extent. However, we show that by including several approximate forms for the mean sea surface, the mean interior flow in the upper kilometer can be rapidly adjusted towards reality by the assimilation, with the location of major current systems moved by hundreds of kilometers.

    Description: This paper reviews major results of the recent German research priority program “Changes of the geo-biosphere during the last 15,000 years”, a contribution to PAGES focussing on changes of the geo-biosphere during the Weichselian Lateglacial. Different continental archives such as annually laminated lacustrine sediments, floodplain sediments, and speleothems were used to reconstruct environmental response to climatic changes and the Laacher See eruption event at ca 12,900 cal BP. Special emphasis is paid to establish a reliable time control using varve counting, high-precision radiocarbon dating of tree-ring series, and AMS radiocarbon dating of terrestrial plant macrofossils recovered from lacustrine sediments to correlate and synchronize large-scale environmental changes and events in central Europe.

    Description: A combined volcanological, geochemical, paleo-oceanological, geochronological and geophysical study was undertaken on the Kurile Basin, in order to constrain the origin and evolution of this basin. Very high rates of subsidence were determined for the northeastern floor and margin of the Kurile Basin. Dredged volcanic samples from the Geophysicist Seamount, which were formed under subaerial or shallow water conditions but are presently located at depths in excess of 2300 m, were dated at 0.84±0.06 and 1.07±0.04 Ma with the laser 40Ar/39Ar single crystal method, yielding a minimum average subsidence rate of 1.6 mm/year for the northeast basin floor in the Quaternary. Trace element and Sr–Nd–Pb isotope data from the volcanic rocks show evidence for contamination within lower continental crust and/or the subcontinental lithospheric mantle, indicating that the basement presently at ∼6-km depth is likely to represent thinned continental crust. Average subsidence rates of 0.5–2.0 mm/year were estimated for the northeastern slope of the Kurile Basin during the Pliocene and Quaternary through the determination of the age and paleo-environment (depth) of formation of sediments from a canyon wall. Taken together, the data from the northeastern part of the Kurile Basin indicate that subsidence began in or prior to the Early Pliocene and that subsidence rates have increased in the Quaternary. Similar rates of subsidence have been obtained from published studies on the Sakhalin Shelf and Slope and from volcanoes in the rear of the Kurile Arc. The recent stress field of the Kurile Basin is inferred from the analysis of seismic activity, focal mechanism solutions and from the structure of the sedimentary cover and of the Alaid back-arc volcano. Integration of these results suggests that compression is responsible for the rapid subsidence of the Kurile Basin and that subsidence may be an important step in the transition from basin formation to its destruction. The compression of the Kurile Basin results from squeezing of the Okhotsk Plate between four major plates: the Pacific, North American, Eurasian and Amur. We predict that continued compression could lead to subduction of the Kurile Basin floor beneath Hokkaido and the Kurile Arc in the future and thus to basin closure.

    Description: Seasonal changes in eddy energy are used to investigate the role of high-frequency wind forcing in generating eddy kinetic energy in the oceans. To this end, we analyze two experiments of an eddy-permitting model of the North Atlantic driven by daily and monthly mean wind stress fields, and compare results with corresponding changes in the variance of the wind fields, and related results from previous studies using altimeter and current meter data. With daily wind-stress forcing the model is found to be in general agreement with altimetric observations and reveal a complex pattern of temporal changes in variability over the North Atlantic. Observations and the model indicate enhanced levels of eddy energy during winter months over several areas of the northern and, particularly northeastern North Atlantic. Since the wind-generated variability is primarily barotropic, its signal can be detected mostly in the low-energy regions of the northern and north-eastern North Atlantic, which are remote from baroclinically unstable currents. There the winter-to-summer difference in simulated eddy kinetic energy caused by the variable wind forcing is 〈0.5 cm2 s2 between 30° and 55°N, and is 1–3 cm2 s2 north of 55°N. Seasonal changes in kinetic energy are insignificant along the path of the North Atlantic current and south of about 30°N. The weak depth dependence of the seasonal changes in eddy energy implies that the relative importance of wind-generated eddy energy is maximum at depth where the general (baroclinic) variability level is low. Accordingly, a significant correlation is found between the seasonal cycle in the variance of wind stress and the seasonal cycle in eddy energy over a substantially wider area than near the surface, notably across the entire eastern North Atlantic between the North Atlantic Current and the North Equatorial Current.

    Description: Recent subsurface float measurements in 27 Mediterranean Water eddies (Meddies) in the Atlantic are grouped together to reveal new information about the pathways of these energetic eddies and how they are often modified and possibly destroyed by collisions with seamounts. Twenty Meddles were tracked in the Iberian Basin west of Portugal, seven in the Canary Basin. During February 1994 14 Meddles were simultaneously observed, 11 of them in the Iberian Basin. Most (69%) of the newly formed Meddles in the Iberian Basin translated southwestward into the vicinity of the Horseshoe Seamounts and probably collided with them. Some Meddles (31%) passed around the northern side of the seamounts and translated southwestward at a typical velocity of 2.0 cm/s into the Canary Basin. Some Meddles observed there were estimated to be up to similar to 5 yr old. Four Meddles in the Canary Basin collided with the Great Meteor Seamounts and three Meddles were inferred to have been destroyed by the collision. Overall an estimated 90% of Meddles collided with major seamounts. The mean time from Meddy formation to a collision with a major seamount was estimated to be around 1.7 yr. Combined with the estimated Meddy formation rate of 17 Meddies/yr from previous work, this suggests that around 29 Meddles co-exist in the North Atlantic. Therefore during February 1994 we observed about half of the population of Meddles

    Description: A combination of weight and reflectance measurements as well as scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses on planktic foraminiferal tests from two sites in the Nordic Seas were used to investigate the pelagic carbonate preservation during the last five glacial–interglacial cycles. In general, a pattern showing good preservation during glacial times and enhanced corrosion during interglacial times can be observed. Marine Isotope Stage 11 (MIS 11) reveals the strongest corrosional features with an estimated 45% total loss of the foraminiferal carbonate before shell fragmentation. One reason for the enhanced interglacial corrosion may be a high regional surface productivity during these intervals, which led to increased dissolution rates in the deep sea driven by metabolic carbon dioxide. However, the carbonate preservation changes may also be linked to global changes in the marine carbonate system. Although the reason for the observed dissolution pattern in the Nordic Seas remains speculative, it seems to be in phase with the rhythm of glacial–interglacial carbonate preservation in the Pacific Ocean but out of phase with the rest of the Atlantic. The data further support the hypothesis that much of the glacial decrease in the atmospheric CO2 may be attributed to the changes in the alkalinity of the oceans.

    Description: The sources of non-anthropogenic Pb in seawater have been the subject of debate. Here we present Pb isotope time-series that indicate that the non-anthropogenic Pb budget of the northernmost Pacific Ocean has been governed by ocean circulation and riverine inputs, which in turn have ultimately been controlled by tectonic processes. Despite the fact that the investigated locations are situated within the Asian dust plume, and proximal to extensive arc volcanism, eolian contributions have had little impact. We have obtained the first high-resolution and high-precision Pb isotope time-series of North Pacific deep water from two ferromanganese crusts from the Gulf of Alaska in the NE Pacific Ocean, and from the Detroit Seamount in the NW Pacific Ocean. Both crusts were dated applying 10Be/9Be ratios and yield continuous time-series for the past 13.5 and 9.6 Myr, respectively. Lead isotopes show a monotonic evolution in 206Pb/204Pb from low values in the Miocene (≤18.57) to high values at present day (≥18.84) in both crusts, even though they are separated by more than 3000 km along the Aleutian Arc. The variation exceeds the amplitude found in Equatorial Pacific deep water records by about three-fold. There also is a striking similarity in 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios of the two crusts, indicating the existence of a local circulation cell in the sub-polar North Pacific, where efficient lateral mixing has taken place but only limited exchange (in terms of Pb) with deep water from the Equatorial Pacific has occurred. Both crusts display well-defined trends with age in Pb–Pb isotope mixing plots, which require the involvement of at least four distinct Pb sources for North Pacific deep water. The Pb isotope time-series reveal that eolian supplies (volcanic ash and continent-derived loess) have only been of minor importance for the dissolved Pb budget of marginal sites in the deep North Pacific over the past 6 Myr. The two predominant sources have been young volcanic arcs, one located in the northeastern part and one located in the northwestern part of the Pacific margin, from where material has been eroded and delivered to the ocean, most likely via riverine pathways.

    Description: We show the distribution of nutrients, oxygen, total dissolved inorganic carbon (CT) and total alkalinity (AT) along three sections close to the Canary Islands, between 18°W and the African coast during Meteor 37/2 cruise (January 1997). From the thermohaline properties of Eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW), Mediterranean Water (MW), Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) and North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), a mixing model has been established based on the water mass description. It can explain most of the variabilities found in the distribution of the chemical variables, including the carbon system, and it is validated through the use of conservative chemical variables like ‘NO.’ From nutrients, oxygen, AT and CT, the chemical characterisation of the water masses was performed by calculating the concentration of these variables in the previously defined thermohaline end-members. The relative variation of nutrient concentrations, resulting from the regeneration of organic matter, was estimated. Close to the African shelf-break, a poleward undercurrent conveying as much as a 11% of AAIW was observed only in the southern section (28.5°N). From the chemical and thermohaline properties of the end-members, a comparison with data from other oceanic regions was made in respect to conservative chemical variables (‘NO’). In addition, a north–south gradient in the ventilation pattern of water masses is observed from the residuals of the model.

    Description: Measurement strategies for understanding the oceanic CO2 (carbon dioxide) system are moving towards in situ and ship of opportunity sampling techniques. Automated instrumentation with high accuracy and sampling frequencies will enable a greater understanding of the fluxes of marine carbon and lead to a more reliable constrain on the calculated uptake of anthropogenic CO2 by the oceans. This paper describes the automated marine pH sensor (AMpS); new instrumentation and methodology for the determination of seawater pH using dual spectrophotometric measurements of sulfonephthalein indicator in a semi-continuous seawater stream. The pH values measured during a recent study in the Weddell Sea are used to illustrate the excellent properties of the AMpS. The method has an on-line precision of better than 0.001 pH units and an estimated accuracy of better than 0.004 pH units. The instrument is compact, portable and has a measurement frequency of 20 samples per hour. The instrument is ideally suitable for operation on ships of opportunity.

    Description: Hydrate Ridge, Cascadia convergent margin, is characterized by abundant methane hydrates at and below the seafloor, active venting of fluids and gases, chemosynthetic communities composed of giant sulfide-oxidizing bacteria and clams, authigenic carbonates, and some of the highest methane oxidation rates ever found in the marine environment. Fluid flow rates vary over six orders of magnitude among closely spaced settings at the crest of Hydrate Ridge. The distribution of benthic communities is mainly related to the sulfide flux from the subsurface sediments produced by anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Even at high flux rates, AOM removes most of the methane seeping from the subsurface. Less than 50% of the methane escapes from bacterial mats, from Calyptogena fields 〈15%, and from Acharax beds, no methane is emitted to the water column. The precipitation of carbonate derived from AOM is a significant and permanent carbon sink. Hence, compared to the amount of gas hydrates and methane-derived carbonates stored at the summit of Hydrate Ridge, the emission of methane is relatively low due to the efficient filtering capacity of methanotrophic microbial communities. This present review updates current knowledge of the geology of Hydrate Ridge, summarizes recently published data on geomicrobiology and biogeochemistry, and derives a local methane budget.

    Description: The closing of the water and energy cycle of the Baltic Sea is one of the main aims of BALTEX (Baltic Sea Experiment), which particularily focuses on the exploration, modelling and quantification of the various processes determining the space and time variability of the energy and water budget. On the long-term mean the water budget of the Baltic Sea is determined by river runoff, net precipitation (precipitation minus evaporation) and the in- and outflows through the Baltic Sea entrance area, assuming that the mean sea level remains constant, i.e. the ability of the Baltic Sea to store a huge amount of water is averaged out over the long-term period. For shorter periods, the water storage which can be expressed by the mean sea level plays an important role on the water budget. The objective of the present study is to investigate the variability of the water storage of the Baltic Sea and relate its fluctuations to the different components of the water balance equation. The anomaly of the mean sea level of the Baltic Sea shows a well pronounced seasonal cycle, with negative values between the end of February to the end of June (minimum in the middle of May), and positive anomalies from July to mid-February (maximum in January). There is a high correlation between the mean sea level expressed by the Landsort tide gauge and the local atmospheric conditions over the Baltic Sea. The annual course of the total water balance is controlled by the local atmospheric conditions with the net fresh-water inflow only controls the general outflow conditions. Sea level, precipitation and river runoff have been obtained from observations provided by the SMHI. For the in- and outflow through the entrance area of the Baltic Sea and evaporation over the open ocean, coupled sea ice-ocean model simulations for a 10-years period have been utilized.

    Description: The Swatch of No Ground is a shelf canyon that deeply incises the Bengal shelf near the Ganges–Brahmaputra river mouth, cuts the foreset beds of the subaqueous river delta and acts as temporary depocenter between river mouth and Bengal fan. Sedimentation rates in the Swatch of No Ground are highest near the canyon head at ∼50 cm a−1, decreasing to ∼15 cm a−1 in 600 m water depth. The canyon deposits consist of intercalated fine (silt–clay) and coarse (silt–sand) grained deposits. In seismic profiles, small-scale sedimentary structures and parallel-bedded layers reveal that sediment in the canyon is mainly deposited from suspension. During fair weather conditions tidal currents are the dominant mechanism that transports plumes of suspended river load towards the canyon, forming fine-grained silt–clay layers. During storm conditions, sediment is resuspended on the inner shelf and subaqueous delta east of the canyon. Storm-generated bottom currents transport the resuspended sediment alongshelf to the canyon where the particles are trapped and form graded coarse silt–sand layers. Channels and gullies in the Swatch of No Ground indicate active gravity-driven currents with an erosional character in the upper canyon and non-depositional character below ∼450 m, suggesting that persistent or ephemeral currents presently export sediment to the Bengal fan. Numerous slumps and slides observed in the canyon show small-scale acoustically transparent layers that indicate sediment liquefaction presumably initiated along the steep canyon margin. These mudflows move downslope and halt where the canyon gradient decreases. One widespread acoustically transparent layer with an age of approximately 140–160 years BP can be traced throughout much of the canyon and is probably the result of large-scale sediment remobilization triggered by a catastrophic event like an earthquake. This may represent decennial-to-centennial scale events that remove large quantities of sediment and prevent the canyon from rapid infilling.

    Description: This paper is an observational study of small-scale coherent eddies in the Labrador Sea, a region of dense water formation thought to be of considerable importance to the North Atlantic overturning circulation. Numerical studies of deep convection emphasize coherent eddies as a mechanism for the lateral transport of heat, yet their small size has hindered observational progress. A large part of this paper is therefore devoted to developing new methods for identifying and describing coherent eddies in two observational platforms, current meter moorings and satellite altimetry. Details of the current and water mass structure of individual eddy events, as they are swept past by an advecting flow, can then be extracted from the mooring data. A transition is seen during mid-1997, with long-lived boundary current eddies dominating the central Labrador Sea year-round after this time, and convectively formed eddies similar to those seen in deep convection modeling studies apparent prior to this time. The TOPEX / Poseidon altimeter covers the Labrador Sea with a loose “net” of observations, through which coherent eddies can seem to appear and disappear. By concentrating on locating and describing anomalous events in individual altimeter tracks, a portrait of the spatial and temporal variability of the underlying eddy field can be constructed. The altimeter results reveal an annual “pulsation” of energy and of coherent eddies originating during the late fall at a particular location in the boundary current, pinpointing the time and place of the boundary current-type eddy formation. The interannual variability seen at the mooring is reproduced, but the mooring site is found to be within a localized region of greatly enhanced eddy activity. Notably lacking in both the annual cycle and interannual variability is a clear relationship between the eddies or eddy energy and the intensity of wintertime cooling. These eddy observations, as well as hydrographic evidence, suggest an active role for boundary current dynamics in shaping the energetics and water mass properties of the interior region.

    Description: Understanding the hydrology of cold seep environments is crucial to perform accurate estimates of fluid and chemical fluxes at sedimentary wedges. Shallow convection processes may affect fluid flux estimates and could favor the destabilization of gas hydrate accumulations, increasing the sediment-ocean methane flux. Evidence for the occurrence of convection at cold seeps, however, is still limited. We use the concentration of 14C (D14C) in carbonate crusts formed at cold seeps of the eastern Mediterranean Sea as a tracer for convective recirculation of seawater-derived fluids. A numerical model is applied to investigate the controls on 14C incorporation in cold seep carbonates. Our simulations show that increased amounts of CH4 in the expelled fluids result in elevated crust D14C, while high Ca2+ and HCO3− concentrations produce the opposite effect. Convection is the only transport process that can significantly increase crust D14C. Advection, bioirrigation, eddy diffusion and bioturbation instead, have little effect on, or produce a decrease of, crust D14C. In addition, the presence of old or modern carbon (MC) in host sediments prior to cementation and the 14C-decay associated to the time needed to form the crust contribute in defining the D14C of carbonate crusts. We then use the model to reproduce the 14C content of the eastern Mediterranean Sea crusts to constrain the chemical and hydrological conditions that led to their formation. Some crusts contain relatively low amounts of 14C (−945.0〈D14C ‰〈−930.2) which, assuming no ageing after crust formation, can be reproduced without considering convection. Other crusts from two sites (the Amsterdam and Napoli mud volcanoes), instead, have a very high 14C-content (−899.0〈D14C ‰〈−838.4) which can only be reproduced by the model if convection mixes deep fluids with seawater. Order-of-magnitude calculations using the Rayleigh criterion for convection suggest that the slow seepage (about 10 cm year−1) of low salinity (20‰) fluids at the Amsterdam sites could trigger haline convection there. On the Napoli mud volcano, where high-density brines are expelled, density-driven convection cannot take place and other processes, possibly involving the rapid movement of free gas in the sediment, could be important.

    Description: Variations in oxygen conditions below the permanent halocline influence the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea through a number of mechanisms. In this study, we examine the effects of physical forcing on variations in the volume of deep oxygenated water suitable for reproductive success of central Baltic cod. Recent research has identified the importance of inflows of saline and oxygenated North Sea water into the Baltic Sea for the recruitment of Baltic cod. However, other processes have been suggested to modify this reproduction volume including variations in timing and volume of terrestrial runoff, variability of the solubility of oxygen due to variations in sea surface temperature as well as the influence of variations in wind stress. In order to examine the latter three mechanisms, we have performed simulations utilizing the Kiel Baltic Sea model for a period of a weak to moderate inflow of North Sea water into the Baltic, modifying wind stress, freshwater runoff and thermal inputs. The model is started from three-dimensional fields of temperature, salinity and oxygen obtained from a previous model run and forced by realistic atmospheric conditions. Results of this realistic reference run were compared to runs with modified meteorological forcing conditions and river runoff. From these simulations, it is apparent that processes other than major Baltic inflows have the potential to alter the reproduction volume of Baltic cod. Low near-surface air temperatures in the North Sea, the Skagerrak/Kattegat area and in the western Baltic influence the water mass properties (high oxygen solubility). Eastward oriented transports of these well-oxygenated highly saline water masses may have a significant positive impact on the Baltic cod reproduction volume in the Bornholm Basin. Finally, we analysed how large scale and local atmospheric forcing conditions are related to the identified major processes affecting the reproduction volume.

    Description: A three-dimensional physical oceanographic model was used to simulate the temporal evolution of ichthyoplankton distributions in the Bornholm Basin, Baltic Sea. The Bornholm Basin is one of the major spawning grounds for cod (Gadus morhua callarias L.) and sprat (Sprattus sprattus balticus S.) in the Baltic Sea with a large number of historic survey data as well as material from ongoing investigations being available. The aim of the present study was to investigate the quantitative influence of different factors on abundance estimates of early life stages (eggs and larvae) of cod and sprat. Influences under consideration were advective losses, uncertainty due to non-sufficient spatial sampling resolution (e.g. number of stations) and effects of the sampling strategy (e.g. sequence of stations). The numerical simulations were performed for two time periods with contrasting meteorological forcing conditions. Errors in abundance estimates were highest at high wind speeds and when the organisms showed a patchy distribution. Advective losses were highest for the shallowest distributed life stages (cod and sprat larvae). Under strong west-wind conditions, losses due to transport out of the surveyed area reached up to 〉10% after 2 days. Different sampling strategies had no impact on overall accuracy. Errors due to sampling resolution amounted to 2–26% for the standard grid of 45 stations. The results suggest that wind forcing might serve as a first rough approximation for the reliability of historic abundance estimates.

    Description: Here, we present a new technique for the direct measurement of 44Ca/40Ca isotope ratios on a Multicollector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (MC–ICP–MS, AXIOM) using the “cool plasma” technique. By reducing the plasma energy to about 400 W, the isobaric effect resulting from 40Ar+ can be significantly reduced, enabling the simultaneous and precise measurement of 44Ca and 40Ca beam intensities in different Faraday cups. In contrast to the TIMS technique requiring a 43Ca/48Ca double spike, the isotope measurements on MC–ICP–MS can be performed by bracketing standards. We express the calcium isotope variation relative to NIST SRM 915a (δ44/40Ca [‰]=[((44Ca/40Ca)sample/(44Ca/40Ca)NIST SRM 915a)−1]*1000). Isobaric effects of 24Mg16O+ and 23Na16OH+ interfering with 40Ca and 26Mg16OH2+ with 44Ca can be neglected by measuring calcium isotopes near the low-mass edge of the peaks. No influence of 87Sr2+ monitored on 43.5 atomic mass units (amu) was found. Repeated measurements of two Johnson Matthey CaCO3 standards (lot No. 4064 and lot No. 9912) revealed values of about −11.29 (‰ SRM 915a) and 0.57 (‰ SRM 915a). These values are in accordance with previous values published by Russell et al. [Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 42 (1978) 1075], Heuser et al. [Int. J. Mass Spectrom. 220 (2002) 385], Hippler et al. [Geostand. Newsl. 27 (2003) 267] and Schmitt et al. [Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 67 (2003) 2607]. Repeated measurement of the NIST SRM 915a CaCO3 standard showed that the variance of a single δ44/40Ca measurement is about 0.14‰ RSD being comparable with TIMS. MC–ICP–MS-based δ44/40Ca values measured on inorganically precipitated aragonite samples are indistinguishable from earlier measurements based on TIMS, confirming the positive correlation of δ44/40Ca and temperature. MC–ICP–MS-based δ44/40Ca measurements on cultured Orbulina universa showed a slope of about 0.026‰/°C being similar to the TIMS-based δ44/40Ca measurements showing a slope of about 0.019‰/°C. The large offset of about 5‰ between the two techniques is shown to be caused by a “matrix” effect, indicating that any δ44/40Ca measurements on MC–ICP–MS are sensitively controlled by the Ca concentration and the acidity of the solution. Our study demonstrates the possibility to measure the whole dispersion of calcium isotopes with MC–ICP–MS, showing that 40Ca can be used for normalization of 44Ca.

    Description: Oxygen isotope values of the extant Caribbean coralline sponge Ceratoporella nicholsoni are compared with published temperatures and δ18O of water calculated from salinities. The measured values from aragonitic sponge skeletons have a mean offset of 1.0 ± 0.1‰ from calculated calcite equilibrium values (αaragonite-calcite = 1.0010). This is in good agreement with published values from synthetic aragonite. They further agree with published near-equilibrium oxygen isotope values of temperate and cold water molluscs and foraminifera extrapolated to the temperature range of the coralline sponges. These results and the mode of skeleton formation of Ceratoporella nicholsoni suggest that these sponges precipitate aragonite close to isotopic equilibrium. The temperature dependence of oxygen isotopic fractionation between the aragonite of Ceratoporella nicholsoni and water is only roughly constrained by the available data, due to the narrow temperature range of the Caribbean reef sites. However, as the data suggest oxygen isotopic equilibrium, we can calculate a well constrained temperature equation combining temperate and cold water equilibrium values from molluscs and foraminifera with our sponge data: Full-size image (〈1 K) and Full-size image (〈1 K).

    Description: Climate variability in the northeast Atlantic was investigated on glacial–interglacial and millennial time scales during the last 200 000 years, using sea surface temperature (SST) records derived from planktonic foraminiferal diversities and from Mg/Ca measurements on Globigerina bulloides. Paleoceanographical interpretations are supported by species composition analyses, benthic and planktonic isotopic data as well as records of iceberg-rafted debris (IRD). Differences of climate development are recognized for both interglacial and glacial periods. Temperature estimates indicate slightly warmer conditions (up to 2°C) during marine oxygen isotope stage (MIS) 5e than during the Holocene. In contrast to the last glaciation, when the SST minimum coincided with a minimum in solar insolation immediately before Termination I, during the penultimate glaciation a long SST minimum occurred at times of intermediate solar insolation well preceding the onset of Termination II. This discrepancy between two glacial terminations may be explained by an inherently different orbital configuration characteristic for each glacial interval. Despite these differences between the two glacial trends, the superimposed shorter-lived climatic events reveal the same order of principal steps, implying their common causal nature. A direct comparison of faunal SSTs with those retrieved from Mg/Ca analysis shows that Mg/Ca-derived temperatures follow the general glacial–interglacial trend; however, the latter appear to be largely overestimated. Supported by δ18O data in G. bulloides, which show little response to millennial-scale variability, there seems to be a need for species-dependent calibration experiments that also consider the different oceanographic settings this particular species can live in.

    Description: Ten ODP sites drilled in a depth transect (2164–4775 m water depth) during Leg 172 recovered high-deposition rate (〉20 cm/kyr) sedimentary sections from sediment drifts in the western North Atlantic. For each site an age model covering the past 0.8–0.9 Ma has been developed. The time scales have a resolution of 10–20 kyr and are derived by tuning variations of estimated carbonate content to the orbital parameters precession and obliquity. Based on the similarity in the signature of proxy records and the spectral character of the time series, the sites are divided into two groups: precession cycles are better developed in carbonate records from a group of shallow sites (2164–2975 m water depth, Sites 1055–1058) while the deeper sites (2995–4775 m water depth, Sites 1060–1063) are characterized by higher spectral density in the obliquity band. The resulting time scales show excellent coherence with other dated carbonate and isotope records from low latitudes. Besides the typical Milankovitch cyclicity significant variance of the resulting carbonate time series is concentrated at millennial-scale changes with periods of about 12, 6, 4, 2.5, and 1.5 kyr. Comparisons of carbonate records from the Blake Bahama Outer Ridge and the Bermuda Rise reveal a remarkable similarity in the time and frequency domain indicating a basin-wide uniform sedimentation pattern during the last 0.9 Ma.

    Description: Eight different sites from 2300 to 4420 m water depth in the Arabian Sea were sampled for a biochemical quantification of phospholipid concentrations in the sediments. This method serves as a measure of microbial biomass in marine sediments comprising all small-sized organisms, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa and metazoa. Phospholipid concentrations can be converted to carbon units as an estimate of total microbial biomass in the sediments. The average phospholipid concentrations in the surface sediments (0–1 cm) of the 4 abyssal sites ranged from 7 nmol cm−3 at the southern site (SAST, 10°N 65°E, 4425 m) to 29 nmol cm−3 at the western site (WAST, 16°N 60°E, 4045 m). The high values detected at the abyssal station WAST exceeded those in the literature for other abyssal sites and were comparable to values from the upper continental slope of the NE-Atlantic and the Arctic. At the four continental slope sites in the Arabian Sea, average phospholipid concentrations ranged from 9 to 53 nmol cm−3 with the maximum values at stations A (2314 m) and D (3142 m) close to the Omani coast. Records of particulate organic carbon flux to the deep sea are available for four of the investigated locations, allowing a test of the hypothesis that the standing stock of benthic microorganisms in the deep sea is controlled by substrate availability, i.e. particle sedimentation. Total microbial biomass in the surface sediments of the Arabian Sea was positively correlated with sedimentation rates, consistent with previous studies of other oceans. The use of the measurement of phospholipid concentrations as a proxy for input of particulate organic matter is discussed.

    Description: Extensive deposits of methane hydrate characterize Hydrate Ridge in the Cascadia margin accretionary complex. The ridge has a northern peak at a depth of about 600 m, which is covered by extensive carbonate deposits, and an 800 m deep southern peak that is predominantly sediment covered. Samples collected with benthic instrumentation and from Alvin push cores reveal a complex hydrogeologic system where fluid and methane fluxes from the seafloor vary by several orders of magnitude at sites separated by distances of only a few meters. We identified three distinct active fluid regimes at Hydrate Ridge. The first province is represented by discrete sites of methane gas ebullition, where the bulk of the flow occurs through channels in which gas velocities reach 1 m s−1. At the northern summit of the ridge the gas discharge appears to be driven by pressure changes on a deep gas reservoir, and it is released episodically at a rate of ∼6×104 mol day−1 following tidal periodicity. Qualitative observations at the southern peak suggest that the gas discharge there is driven by more localized phenomena, possibly associated with destabilization of massive gas hydrate deposits at the seafloor. The second province is characterized by the presence of extensive bacterial mats that overlay sediments capped with methane hydrate crusts, both at the northern and southern summits. Here fluid typically flows out of the sediments at rates ranging from 30 to 100 cm yr−1. The third province is represented by sites colonized by vesicomyid clams, where bottom seawater flows into the sediments for at least some fraction of the time. Away from the active gas release sites, fluid flows calculated from pore water models are in agreement with estimates using published flowmeter data and numerical model calculations. Methane fluxes out of mat-covered sites range from 30 to 90 mmol m−2 day−1, whereas at clam sites the methane flux is less than 1 mmol m−2 day−1.

    Description: In this study, patterns of community development were investigated within vs. outside 'habitats'. These habitats represented five different monospecific assemblages of one of the following species: the brown alga Fucus serratus, the red alga Delesseria sanguinea, the green alga Enteromorpha intestinalis, the seagrass Zostera marina and the blue mussel Mytilus edulis. Natural assemblages were allowed to develop on paired artificial substrata-separated by ca. 1 m -within (treatment) vs, outside (control) of habitats. The same colonizer species settled on treatment and control substrata for given habitats. However, after 5 months of settlement and post-settlement dynamics, their proportional abundance and the structure of treatment and control assemblages differed in many instances. Variability among replicates of a given treatment, seperated by up to 50 m, was large, indicating a patchy spatial distribution of organisms. Despite this spatial heterogeneity among within-treatment replicates, analysis of similarity revealed that in most instances significantly different assemblages developed between treatments on a small spatial scale depending on whether substrate were positioned within as compared to outside a, given habitat. Consequently, the algae, seagrass or mussels constituting a habitat seem to control the structure of the benthic assemblage developing in their vicinity by one or more possible mechanisms: reduction of larval advection, exudation of metabolites that influence settlement and/or post-settlement survival, and/or-in the case of mussel assemblages-predation on larvae. In addition to spatial variability in larval supply, stochasticity in succession, substratum heterogeneity, competition and predation effects, this investigation reveals the potential of a further assemblage structuring factor: the impact of neighboring organisms

    Description: Observations of transient tracers such as tritium and helium-3 Full-size image (〈1 K) are frequently combined to construct “age-like” quantities generally interpreted to represent time elapsed since a fluid parcel was last at the surface. In a turbulent (“diffusive”) environment such as the ocean, we must regard the fluid parcel as being composed of material fluid elements that have spent different lengths of time since their last contact with the surface. Hence, they are characterized by an age spectrum or distribution of transit times. In this study we explore the concepts of tracer-derived “ages” and the transit-time probability density function (PDF) with the aim of improving our understanding of their interpretation. Using an ocean general circulation model, we illustrate the effect of mixing on tracer-derived “ages” within the Atlantic Ocean. The mixing biases such ages towards younger values with respect to the ideal or mean age of a water parcel. In the North Atlantic, this bias is particularly pronounced in the thermocline because of large vertical gradients in tracer concentration, and in the deep ocean, where the penetration of recently ventilated water creates large gradients along the isopycnal surfaces. In contrast, the effect of mixing appears to be relatively small in the subtropical subduction region. Calculations of the transit-time PDF in the ocean model show, however, that the mean age can potentially be very large because of contributions from long transit-time pathways, in spite of the fact that such pathways make up a small fraction of the fluid parcel. These results illustrate the key idea that tracer-derived ages are weighted towards the leading part of the transit-time distribution, while the ideal age is more sensitive to its “tail”. These tracers are thus sensitive to and help constrain different time scales. We also find that the ideal age converges much more rapidly to the mean age compared with the first moment of the age spectrum, an important consideration in numerical studies.

    Description: As a part of the Russian-German project "Siberian River-Runoff (SIRRO)" the major element composition of the dissolved load and the major and trace element composition of particulate load and bottom sediment of the Yenisei River and Estuary were analyzed and examined in context of the basin lithology and climate. In addition, the processes controlling the transformation of the river load in the estuarine mixing zone were investigated. The chemical composition of the dissolved and particulate load of the Yenisei fluvial endmember is generally comparable to that of other major world rivers. The dissolved load is chiefly controlled by carbonate weathering and the chemical composition of the river suspended particulate matter (SPM) is similar to that of the North American Shale Composite (NASC), which represents the weathering product of the upper continental crust. The Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) of the Yenisei SPM amounts to 71, which indicates moderate chemical weathering. With regard to the SPM geochemistry, the Yenisei occupies an intermediate position between the adjacent rivers Khatanga and the Lena. Drastic changes in the composition of the river load are seen in the mixing zone between fresh and salt water. While dissolved Na, Ca, Mg, K, CI, S04, F, Br, Sr and HC03 behave conservatively, dissolved Fe is completely removed from solution at very low salinities. Particulate Mn exhibits a pronounced mid-salinity minimum concomitant with a maximum of dissolved Mn, which is probably related to suboxic conditions in the area of the so-called "marginal filter", where highest turbidities are found. The Mn-minimum in SPM is paralleled by depletions of the elements Ba, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu and V, which can be associated with manganese particles. The estuarine bottom sediments are composed of mud and sand and the sedimentological parameters of the bottom sediments have to be considered for the interpretation of the bulk geochemical data. The chemical composition of the mud is comparable to the SPM, whereas the sand is relatively enriched in Si/Al, Ba/Al, Zr/Al and Sr/Al ratios and depleted in transition metals.

    Description: In this paper, we summarize data on terrigenous sediment supply in the Kara Sea and its accumulation and spatial and temporal variability during Holocene times. Sedimentological, organic-geochemical, and micropaleontological proxies determined in surface sediments allow to characterize the modern (riverine) terrigenous sediment input. AMS-14C dated sediment cores from the Ob and Yenisei estuaries and the adjacent inner Kara Sea were investigated to determine the terrigenous sediment fluxes and their relationship to paleoenvironmental changes. The variability of sediment fluxes during Holocene times is related to the post-glacial sea-level rise and changes in river discharge and coastal erosion input. Whereas during the late/middle Holocene most of the terrigenous sediments were deposited in the estuaries and the areas directly off the estuaries, huge amounts of sediments accumulated on the Kara Sea shelf farther north during the early Holocene before about 9 Cal. kyr BP. The maximum accumulation at that time is related to the lowered sea level, increased coastal erosion, and increased river discharge. Based on sediment thickness charts, echograph profiles and sediment core data, we estimate an average Holocene (0–11 Cal. kyr BP) annual accumulation of 194×106 t yr−1 of total sediment for the whole Kara Sea. Based on late Holocene (modern) sediment accumulation in the estuaries, probably 12×106 t yr−1 of riverine suspended matter (i.e., about 30% of the input) may escape the marginal filter on a geological time scale and is transported onto the open Kara Sea shelf. The high-resolution magnetic susceptibility record of a Yenisei core suggests a short-term variability in Siberian climate and river discharge on a frequency of 300–700 yr. This variability may reflect natural cyclic climate variations to be seen in context with the interannual and interdecadal environmental changes recorded in the High Northern Latitudes over the last decades, such as the NAO/AO pattern. A major decrease in MS values starting near 2.5 Cal. kyr BP, being more pronounced during the last about 2 Cal. kyr BP, correlates with a cooling trend over Greenland as indicated in the GISP-2 Ice Core, extended sea-ice cover in the North Atlantic, and advances of glaciers in western Norway. Our still preliminary interpretation of the MS variability has to be proven by further MS records from additional cores as well as other high-resolution multi-proxy Arctic climate records.
