Description / Table of Contents: This book on the terrestrial space environment is directed at a broad group of students and scientists, who seek knowledge of the methods and results of space research. The only prerequisites are fundamental physics and mathematics as usually acquired in introductory college courses in science or engineering curricula. Stressing physical insight rather than mathematical precision, "Physics of the Earth's Space Environment" derives further knowledge on selected topics as each phenomenon is considered and strives to present experimental results in conjunction with basic reasoning about the underlying physics. The content's breadth and introductory nature make this an ideal reader for students in geophysics, meteorology, space sciences and astronomy

Description / Table of Contents: Wave propagation in poroelastic and viscoelastic solids treated by the Boundary Element method in time domain is the topic of this research book. A novel boundary element formulation has been presented based on the Convolution Quadrature Method. Because in this time-stepping formulation only Laplace domain fundamental solutions are needed this method can be effectively applied to a plenty of problems, e.g., anisotropic or transversely isotropic continua. So, this method combines the advantage of the Laplace domain with the advantage of a time domain calculation. Here, wave propagation phenomenon in viscoelastic as well as poroelastic half spaces are considered. The Rayleigh wave as well as the slow compressional wave in the poroelastic solid is discussed.BEM, Waves, boundary element methods, computational methods, elasticity, numerical methods, poroelasticity, porous media, soil mechanics, vibrations, viscoelasticity

Description / Table of Contents: This book descibes numerical methods for partial differential equations (PDEs) coupling advection, diffusion and reaction terms, encompassing methods for hyperbolic, parabolic and stiff and nonstiff ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The emphasis lies on time-dependent transport-chemistry problems, describing e.g. the evolution of concentrations in environmental and biological applications. Along with the common topics of stability and convergence, much attention is paid on how to prevent spurious, negative concentrations and oscillations, both in space and time. Many of the theoretical aspects are illustrated by numerical experiments on models from biology, chemistry and physics. A unified approach is followed by emphasizing the method of lines or semi-discretization. In this regard this book differs substantially from more specialized textbooks which deal exclusively with either PDEs or ODEs. This book treats integration methods suitable for both classes of problems and thus is of interest to PDE researchers unfamiliar with advanced numerical ODE methods, as well as to ODE researchers unaware of the vast amount of interesting results on numerical PDEs.
