Notizen: Abstract The paleohydrological evolution of several high altitude, saline lakes located in the southernmost Altiplano (El Peinado and San Francisco basins, Catamarca province, NW Argentina) was reconstructed applying sedimentological, geochemical and isotopic techniques. Several playa lakes from the San Francisco basin (26° 56′ S; 68° 08′ W, 3800-3900 m a.s.l.) show evidence of a recent raise in the watertable that led to modern deposition of carbonate and diatomaceous muds. A 2 m - long core from El Peinado Lake (26° 29′ 59′′ S, 68°05′ 32′′ W, 3820 m a.s.l.) consists of calcitic crusts (unit 3), overlaid by an alternation of macrophyte-rich and travertine clast- rich, laminated muds (unit 2), and topped by travertine facies (unit 1). This sedimentary sequence illustrates a paleohydrological evolution from a subaerial exposure (unit 3) to a high lake stand (unit 2), and a subsequent smaller decrease in lake level (unit 1). The δ13Corganic matterrecord also reflects the lake transgression between units 3 and 2. Although there is a general positive correlation between δ 18Ocarbonate and salinity proxies (Na, Li and B content), the large data dispersion indicates that other factors besides evaporation effects control chemical and isotopic composition of lakewater. Consequently, the oxygen isotopic composition cannot be interpreted exclusively as an indicator of salinity or evaporation ratio. The degassing of CO2 during groundwater discharge can explain the enriched δ13C values for primary carbonates precipitated. The carbon budget in these high altitude, saline lakes seems to be controlled by physical rather than biological processes. The Altiplano saline lakes contain records of environmental and climatic change, although accurate 14C dating of these lacustrine sediments is hindered by the scarcity of terrestrial organic material, and the large reservoir effects. Sedimentologic evidence, a 210Pb-based chronology, and a preliminary U/Th chronology indicate a very large reservoir effect in El Peinado, likely as a result of old groundwaters and large contributions of volcanic and geothermal 14C-free CO2 to the lake system. Alternative chronologies are needed to place these paleorecords in a reliable chronological framework. A period of increased water balance in the San Francisco basin ended at about 1660 ± 82 yr B.P. (calendar yr U/Th age), and would correlates with the humid phase between 3000 and 1800 yr B.P detected in other sites of the southern Altiplano. Both, 210Pb and preliminary U/Th dating favor a younger age for the paleohydrological changes in El Peinado. The arid period reflected by subaerial exposure and low lake levels in unit 3 would have ended with a large increase in effective moisture during the late 17th century. The increased lake level during deposition of unit 2 would represent the period between AD1650 - 1900, synchronous to the Little Ice Age. This chronological framework is coherent with other regional records that show an abrupt transition from more arid to more humid conditions in the early 17th century, and a change to modern conditions in the late 19th century. Although there are local differences, the Little Ice Age stands as a significant climatic event in the Andean Altiplano.

Notizen: Abstract Two series of Hg-based oxides (Hg0.7Mo0.3)Sr2(Ca1−x R x )Cu2O z (R = Nd and Pr, 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.7) have been synthesized. Electrical-resistivity measurements show that these compounds are superconductors with maximum onset T c of 107 and 102 K for Nd- and Pr-containing samples, respectively. The neutron powder diffraction experiments on both as-prepared and O2-annealed samples of R = Nd revealed that the O(3) site at the HgOδ sheets are fully occupied and shifted towards the Hg/Mo site to form Mo–O bonds.

Notizen: Abstract It has been reported that, by adding equal amounts of CaO and CuO to non superconducting La3Ba3Cu6O z (La-336), a series of superconductors with nominal compositions La3Ca y Ba3Cu6+y O z were prepared with maximum Ton c ∼ 80K. Similar studies on addition of CaO and CuO in nonsuperconducting LaBaCu2O z (La-112) resulted into superconducting LaCaBaCu3O z (La-1113). To date no attempt has been made to synthesize La2CaBa2Cu5O z (La-2125) superconducting phase by addition of CaO and CuO to non superconducting La2Ba2Cu4O z (La-224) system. Also no reports are published to study the effect of replacing larger La3+-ions (1.01Å) by smaller rare earth ions viz Y3+(0.89Å), Er3+(0.91Å), Gd3+(0.91Å) on the structural and superconducting properties of (La2−x R x )Ba2(Ca y Cu4+y )O z (LRBCaC); 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5; y=2x system. In this paper, we report the method of synthesis, structural and superconducting property characterization using X-ray diffraction, oxygen content measurements using iodometry, resistivity measurements using d.c. four probe technique and a.c. susceptibility measurements in the temperature range RT to 15K. Also a comparative study, on the evolution of superconducting phase with Ca-concentration for different rare earth substitutions for LRBCaC system in the context of hole doping mechanism, is carried out.

Notizen: Abstract We have studied the role of interlayer interactions (W) in the pressure dependence of T c of layered superconductors. The expressions for dT c /dP are obtained by including the effects of layered structure within the framework of two different proposed models, namely the negative-U Hubbard model and the Hirsch model. We observe that the inclusion of interlayer interaction provides better explanation of pressure dependence of T c . Our numerical results show that the systems having one CuO2 layer per unit cell may be well described by small values of W while the larger values of W accounts for the systems having two or more superconducting layers in a unit cell. The calculated values of dT c /dP vs. W are found to be in good agreement with those of experimental results obtained for various high T c superconductors of cuprate family.

Notizen: Abstract From various theoretical approaches it seems to be rather well established that the Zhang–Rice (ZR) singlet state should play an important role in doped high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) oxides. Yet the conclusion that a one-band model is capable of describing many of the unusual physics observed in HTSC compounds has been questioned because the p z states of the oxygen atoms in the planes as well as those of the apical oxygen atoms hybridize with the Cu d3z2-r2 orbitals and induce a mixing of the in-plane states with the out-of-plane bands. It is shown that electron–lattice coupling and polarizability effects modify the electronic structure of the effective Hamiltonian considered here.

Notizen: Abstract We propose a model for a spatially modulated collective state of superconducting cuprates in which the electronic properties vary locally in space. In this model, the regions of higher hole density (called stripes) are described as Luttinger liquids and the regions of lower density (antiferromagnetic ladders) as an interacting bosonic gas of $${\text{d}}_{x^2 - y^2 } $$ hole pairs. We show that the transition to the superconducting state is topologic and driven by decay processes among these elementary excitations in the presence of vibrations.

Notizen: Abstract We explore the properties of the bipolaron in a 1D Holstein–Hubbard model with dynamical quantum phonons. We apply strong coupling theory to investigate the intersite bipolaron. We investigate the influence of the Hubbard interaction on the bipolaron binding energy, effective mass, and phase diagram. We compare our analytic results to recent numerical calculations [1]. In the intermediate and strong coupling regimes, a bipolaron is stable beyond the naive stability limit U 0 = 2ωg 2. The intersite bipolaron has a significantly reduced mass compared to the single site bipolaron, and is stable in the strong coupling regime up toU c ∼ 4ωg 2.

Notizen: Abstract We study the pairing potential induced by fluctuations around a static charge-density wave (CDW) with scattering vector Q by means of the Fröhlich transformation. For general commensurability M, defined as |k + M Q〉 = |k〉, we find that the intraband pair scattering within the M subbands scales with M, whereas the interband pair scattering becomes suppressed with increasing CDW order parameter. As a consequence, superconductivity is suppressed when the Fermi energy is located between the subbands, as it is usually the case for nesting induced CDWs, but due to the vertex renormalization it can be substantially enhanced when the chemical potential is shifted sufficiently inside one of the subbands. Additional magnetic stripe order restricts this enhancement to the case in which the stripes are half-filled.
