Notes: Abstract Positron lifetime spectra have been measured at 77 K for KCl and Ag-doped KCl before and after x-irradiation at 77 K and after annealing at room temperature. Radiation at 77 K reduces the intensity of the intermediate lifetime (τ2) component. Radiation-induced defects were monitored optically and by ESR. The experiment shows that the changes observed in the positron decay are associated with the presence ofV K centers.

Notes: Abstract The instrument to be described is of the fast-slow coincidence type based on the well known time-to-amplitude conversion principle. Simplicity in circuit design has been achieved by using IC components. Special attention has been paid to the fast response and the temperature stability of the instrument. This fast reponse allows the omission of the pile-up limiter circuits. The temperature stability is adequate (5 psec/°C) for measurements to be made under normal laboratory conditions. Positron lifetimes were measured in both annealed and deformed copper.

Notes: Abstract The pseudopotential picture of the positron in a binary alloy is developed. It is shown that the positron is usually preferentially attracted to one sort of atom in the alloy. This relative positron affinity is associated with the positron pseudopotential difference between the different sorts of atom and calculations of this quantity are presented for a number of 50 at % alloys.

Notes: Abstract Measurements are reported of the angular correlation of annihilation radiation from polarized positrons in single crystals of Fe3O4. No change has been found in the angular correlations on passing through the metal-nonmetal phase transition. The twophoton momentum distribution, obtained by deconvolution of a set of angular correlations, displays a slight anisotropy. The spin density consists of a negative peak at zero momentum surrounded by a shell of positive density between 2 and 5 mrad. The observed spin density is probably a mixture of contributions from the moment on the ferrous ions and from the spin transfer onto the anions owing to covalency effects.

Notes: Abstract Angular correlation measurements on the fcc solid solutions of Cu−Ge and Cu−Si alloys have been carried out on single crystals with four crystallographic orientations by a crossed-slit geometry. The results on both the alloys are nearly the same. The 〈111〉-neck radius and the 〈100〉-radius of the Fermi surfaces increase almost linearly with increasing electron concentration in accord with previous results on Cu−Al and Cu−Zn alloys. The Fermi surface does not touch the square faces of the Brillouin zone at the solubility limit. The results agree fairly well with a calculation based on the sinking-conduction band model.

Notes: Abstract Positron annihilation lifetime spectra in unirradiated and γ-irradiated pure LiF and heavily doped LiF∶Mg have been resolved into three components. The intensity of the intermediate lifetime component increases in proportion to theF-center concentration for both materials until saturation occurs (≈1.4×1017 cm−3 in LiF and ≈5.7×10−17 cm−3 in LiF∶Mg). The presence of a large positive ion vacancy concentration appears to have a much smaller effect than has been observed in KCl∶Ca.

Notes: Abstract Positron annihilation in Cu-0.5 at. % Ge as a function of measuring temperature has been studied. By the use of the trapping model, the formation energy of a vacancy in copper and the binding energy between a germanium atom and a vacancy have been determined to be 1.28 and 0.27 eV, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The study of defects in crystals through their interaction with thermalized positrons is usually based on the trapping model. The theoretical foundation of the trapping model, based on the theory of diffusion-limited reactions, is reviewed with particular emphasis on short-range interactions between positrons and trapping defects. For this case the analytical properties of the trapping model are developed in some detail, including the effects of the initial pair distribution on the trapping rate, the effects of detrapping, and the effects associated with more than one type of trap. The assumptions that are usually made in determinations of monovacancy formation enthalpies from positron annihilation experiments are critically discussed. The need for additional experiments capable of providing information on the temperature dependence of the various parameters involved is, stressed. As an illustration we treat in detail monovacancies with finite detrapping rate plus divacancies, both in thermal equilibrium. In the final section a few remarks are added on cases with long-range interactions between positrons and traps, such as electrically charged point-defects in insulators or semiconductors, and dislocations.

Notes: Abstract Positron lifetime spectra and angular correlation curves for seven fine-grained powders of Fe, Co, Ni, and W are analyzed. From the lifetime data, the positron diffusion constant in metals atT=300°K was found to beD +=(1.0±0.5)×10−2 cm2 sec−1. Evidence is presented that positrons are trapped in metal surface states.

Notes: Abstract The effect of electron beam irradiation on the positron annihilation in KCl, KBr, NaCl single crystals was investigated. The narrowing of the angular correlation curves increases up to the saturation value with the absorbed radiation dose. The shape of the received narrow components differs from the narrow component measured in the additively colored samples. This phenomenon shows the considerable influence of the hole centres upon the positron annihilation in ionic crystals.
