    Description / Table of Contents: In a clear style, the atlas describes the origin and major characteristics of the different soil types that can be found in this environment. The atlas discusses the possible impacts of climate change on permafrost-affected soils and explains the critical role that they play in the global climate and global carbon cycles. 6. For the first time ever, the distribution of soil types for the entire northern circumpolar region can be visualised in a comprehensible manner by the lay-person. Information on the major soil types is presented in detail on twenty six map plates (the atlas has an A3 page size giving a dramatic A2 spread for maps). In a novel exercise, the World Reference Base for Soil Resources has been used as a framework for correlating knowledge from diverse national soil classification systems into a single, coherent, inter-continental product. The atlas illustrates the diversity of soil in the permafrost and seasonally frozen environments through a series of maps supported by explanatory and easily readable texts, high quality photographs and descriptive graphics. The atlas presents the reader with a series of maps that show the variation of soil properties in a circumpolar context and from a polar perspective, allowing comparisons to be made across international boundaries. In addition, larger scale maps show the distribution of major soil types by regions with descriptions of the major issues. The maps have been produced through the elaboration of harmonized soil databases for the northern circumpolar areas by Geographic Information Systems software (GIS).Through supporting texts, the atlas describes the major soil types found in northern latitudes, together with their principal properties and characteristics, the main soil forming processes, the importance of soil classification and the use of soil. Special attention is given to impact of cold climates on soil characteristics and on the relationship between climate change and soils properties (e.g. carbon dynamics, carbon sinks and sources, methane emission). In addition, the atlas illustrates how soil can be used as indicators of past climate change and present examples local and regional perspectives of the importance and functions of soil for society as a whole and particularly for indigenous northern cultures.

    Description: A theoretical method for estimating the characteristics of radon transport in homogeneous soil is developed. The method allows the following characteristics to be estimated: depth distribution function of the soil gas radon concentration, equilibrium radon concentration in the soil air, depth at which the radon concentration reaches its equilibrium value, radon flux density from the Earths surface, and convective radon transport velocity. The method is based on soil gas radon concentration measurements and is appropriate in the case of relatively uniform geology.

    Description: This research introduces a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) model that predicts the location and relative susceptibility of humid subtropical hillslopes to sheetwash erosion. The extent of the erosion was based on the conservation potential of the existing vegetation cover. This is an original deductive and deterministic model (Potential Erosion Detection, PED) incorporating regionally applicable physical and land use factors thought to be influential. These were climate (agroclimatic zones), topography (aspect and slope angle), soil (texture, drainage, depth, aggregation), vegetation cover and land use (tillage activity). \nThe study looked at surface erosion as a perceived problem in a post-colonial economy. The processes, cause and effect of erosion were considered, and socio-economic factors discussed. Data collection and the design of the model recognised potential errors and uncertainties. \nThis research was initiated in the upper basin of the Buff Bay River (Portland) in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. The results revealed a steep terrain, erodible soils and half of the watershed had little understorey and low litter levels. The dominance of coffee ensured that just under half of the research area had soils that were regularly disturbed. The model estimated that 30 % of the upper watershed had the potential for moderate to extreme erosion, contrasting with much higher previous estimates. The statistical dominance of each factor was analysed, showing that soil erodibility dominated the top erosion classes, followed by slope angle, then land use. Alternative soil and vegetative cover parameters for application of the model to other watersheds were also compared. \nThe reliability of the model was analysed using a number of local empirical relationships between erosion and influential factors. The erosion stake Cumulative Erosion Potential values were not significantly related to the PED model scores, but limited results differentiation weakened this approach. The research met two of the three objectives and provided an important preliminary conservation model for the local agencies involved in watershed management.
