Description: The mothership/dory fishing operation 'Pecheur Breton' spent 13 days fishing at the northwestern submarine promontory of Saya de Malha Bank between 24th February and 14th March 1993. The mothership fished using 12 dories which were equipped with echo-sounders and electric fishing reels. A total of 74.3 tonnes of fish was caught in the depth range of 55 to 130 m. of which the blue spotted jobfish (Pristipomoides filamentosus) represented 80%. The catch rates were observed to decreased with time and could not be attributed to changes in climatic conditions, fishing depth, fishing method or bait type. The initial biomass of Pristipomoides filamentosus at the northwestern submarine promontory of Saya de Malha Bank was estimated at 76.1 tonnes through application of the Leslie constant catchability model. Biomass densities of 2,478 kg/km² and 1,264 kg/km-1 were obtained by applying the initial biomass estimates to the surface area of the grounds fished. The quantity removed by the mothership/dory fishing operation was found to be more than 3 times the estimated maximum sustainable yield.

Description: Seychelles is composed of over 100 islands with a land area of approximately 455 km², centred close to 4°30'S and 55°30'E. The combined coastline is approximately 600 km long, the oceanic shelf totals about 50 000 km² and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is over 1 370 000 km². The total population (1994 census) stands at just under 74 000. in 1994, the population registered a growth rate of 2.2%. The GDP (1994) was SR 2373.8 million, fisheries representing 4.8% of this sum. Licensing agreements for foreign fishing activities provided a yearly revenue of SR8 million. Port Victoria is seen as a prime centre for tuna fishing operations in the Indian Ocean. In the artisanal fishery just under 900 persons are working. The largest contributor to catch by vessel type are the traditional whaler vessels representing 47.8% of the total catch. Over 66.3% of the catch is by the handline method. Carangidae representing 24% and Lutjanidae 19% of total landings. There are six specific objectives to the fisheries sector policy, which aims as resource development and maximisation of potential benefits. Nearshore fishery resources are considered to be heavily exploited, however opportunities exist around the distant islands and in deeper waters off the Mahe plateau shelf. Aquaculture of molluscs and prawns is being developed and carried out. The main constraints to development are seen as the lack of skilled manpower and foreign exchange.

Description: Scales reading and length frequency distribution were used for age determination and growth estimation of Boops boops (Bogue) stock of Western Mediterranean Coast of Egypt. Age determination using scale was done and the time of annulus formation was detected by the marginal increment index. Bhattacharya’s method was used for length frequency analysis. Both methods showed 6 age groups. ANOVA test revealed insignificant differences between both estimates of length at age results. Growth parameters estimated using length-at-age data from both methods confirming the age determination results. Growth performance index indicated high similarity between the two estimates. The results revealed the compatibility of length frequency distribution to scale reading for stock assessment studies of bogue stock in Western Mediterranean Coast of Egypt.

Description: The local commonly used kreol name for Ranina ranina is krab ziraf. The krab ziraf fishery in Seychelles started functioning as a commercial fishery in 1986 when the resource was identified as potentially viable. Prior to this time these crab stocks were unexploited. In keeping with the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) policy of monitoring catch and effort in new fisheries a research programme was implemented to assess the state of the Seychelles stock and determine the viability of the fishery as a whole. The objective of this report is to provide an indication of the state of the crab stock at the present fishing levels and give estimates of the standing stock biomass and the potential yield of the fishery. The biomass estimates give a range of between 2460 tonnes and 4486 tonnes for the Mahe plateau. For the calculations of the potential yield these figures were used to derive MSY estimates. The MSY estimates range between 381.36 tonnes and 695.44 tonnes taken as the most conservatively calculated estimates. Given that only an approximate 30 tonnes of krab ziraf are caught per annum the MSY estimates would suggest that the stocks has the potential to be more intensively exploited.

Description: Lake Manzalah; the largest delta Lake in Egypt represents a dynamic system that has been undergoing continuous and pronounced changes since long times. In the last year’s this Lake faced drastic problems that retarded its environmental and fisheries development; the most serious one is the discharge of waste water. It is attempted in the present study to investigate the chemical characters of Lake Manzalah water during 2001-2002. Water temperature ranged from an average of 12.35oC in January and 29.14oC in July. Dissolved Oxygen, pH and total dissolved solids were found in ranges optimum for the living of marine and freshwater fish species. The average concentrations of nutrients lied in the following ranges: 1.24 to 4.89 μmol PO4 -3 l-1 , 5.08 to 28.73 μmol SiO4 -2 l-1 and 1.81 to 17.7 μ_mol NO3-1 l-1 The concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds were found to be relatively higher at the southern regions of the Lake near to the outlets of the drains.
