    Notes: Finite element methods can be formulated from the variational principles in solid mechanics by relaxing the continuity requirements along the interelement boundaries. The combination of different variational principles and different boundary continuity conditions yields numerous types of approximate methods. This paper reviews and reinterprets the existing finite element methods and indicates other alternative schemes. Plate bending problems are used to compare the relative merits of the various methods.

    Notes: The derivation of the stiffness matrix for a refined, fully compatible triangular plate bending finite element is presented. The Kirchhoff plate bending theory is assumed. Six parameters or degrees of freedom are introduced at each of the three corner nodes resulting in an 18 degree of freedom element. This refined element is found to give better results for displacements and particularly for internal moments than any plate bending element, regardless of shape, previously reported in the literature.

    Notes: Finite difference treatment of two-dimensional problems in elastostatics is usually based on the differential equations for the displacement vector or the Airy stress function, depending on whether boundary conditions are on displacement or stress. In either case, determination of stresses requires numerical differentiation and therefore use of a rather fine grid. Moreover, neither method is suited to the treatment of mixed boundary conditions. The alternative method developed in this paper uses the first derivatives of the displacement components at the grid points as basic variables and hence does not require numerical differentiation in the evaluation of stresses. Appropriate finite difference equations are established, and their use is discussed in connection with a specific example with known explicit solution.

    Notes: The theory, function generator routine and testing procedures are given for a six-node 18 degree of freedom triangular element. At corner nodes the variables are the displacement and the two slopes. At midside nodes the variables are the displacement, the slope normal to the side, and the rate of change of this along the side - i.e., the rate of torsion. Of two options, one divides the triangle into three and takes different quartic displacements in the three regions, and the other uses displacement functions with singularities at the vertices. According to a test which compares the energies of the two formulations by eigenvalues, the second is the better if the integration is accurate. The same test, together with others based on finite differences and on nodal values, etc. checks the correctness of the routine decisively.

    Notes: The paper presents first a general formulation of the elasto-plastic matrix for evaluating stress increments from those of stresses for any yield surface with an associated flow rule. A new ‘initial stress’ computational process is proposed which is shown (1) to yield more rapid convergence than alternative approaches (2) to permit large load increments without violating the yield criteria and thus simply to establish lower bound solutions. Several solutions showing stress distribution, strain development and growth of plastic enclaves are given both for the von Mises and for Coulomb (Drucker) type yield surfaces. Load reversal and thermoplastic behaviour are dealt with.

    Notes: The direct Finite Element Analysis which was successfully employed in the solution of dynamic flexural traveling wave problems is extended herein to provide the transient behaviour of finite beams and plates in which shear deformation and rotatory inertia are considered. The particle and angular velocities are exponentially damped so that the static solutions for these problems are obtained with the same analysis which provided the dynamic and transient cases. Three special cases are chosen as examples. In the first, a sinusoidally varying shear force is applied at the tip of a cantilever beam. The resonant characteristics of this beam for both the undamped and damped cases are studied. In the second, a step shear loading is applied to a cantilever beam and its damped dynamic history is studied. Finally, a circular plate whose outer edge is simply supported is impacted at its inner edge by a step moment and its damped transient behaviour is determined. The idea of the methods is potentially applicable to dynamic problems in general.

    Notes: The solution of the large numbers of non-linear algebraic equations occurring in analyses of non-linear structural systems using finite differences or finite elements is time consuming even for the fastest computers. This paper presents a method of solution based on a Taylor's expansion technique which is an aid in the solution of such systems of equations.Examples presented show that in the finite element analysis of moderately non-linear structural systems the technique provides sufficiently accurate solutions. For more non-linear systems the technique provides excellent starting values for the Newton-Raphson method.

    Notes: This paper presents a general theory of finite elements. The concept of finite elements is cast in a general topological framework valid for spaces of finite dimension. It is shown that the idea of finite element models can be developed in higher-dimensional spaces, independent of specific co-ordinate systems, for any type of continuous abstract function defined on the space. Generalizations of the familiar Lagrange and Hermite interpolation functions are presented as well as a general statement of the notion of generalized variables and conjugate fields. It is also shown that admissible finite elements can be developed for non-Euclidean spaces of finite dimension. Topological properties of finite element models are examined in Part I of the paper. Part II is devoted to certain applications.

    Notes: A method is presented based on matrix algebra for the dynamic analysis of a mixed rotating and non-rotating vibration system. Such systems occur in practice when turbo-alternator sets are mounted on flexible steel foundations.The mathematical model considered consists of a rotating non-uniform, bi-symmetric shaft connected via three or more flexible-film bearings to a flexible structure throughout which mass is distributed. The shaft, which is assumed to rotate at constant speed, is heavy, flexible and carries several rigid axi-symmetric discs. Viscous damping is assumed to act in all parts of the system and gravitational effects are ignored.

    Notes: Surface displacements at the end of a semi-infinite, circular cylinder due to an axisymmetric ring of forces on the end are examined. The solution which has been found may then be used to find surface displacements for general axisymmetric loadings by convolution. The solution, in tabular form, is given as corrections to the counter-part half-space solution.The method of solution involves a three step superposition process. First, the displacement due to a ring of forces on a half-space is found by using the Boussinesq solution. Then, the excess tractions on the half-space, over that of the cylinder, are removed. This is done in two parts. The problem of an infinite cylinder with linearly varying pressure and shear over a short length of the lateral surface is solved by using Fourier integrals. This is used for the removal of the pressure and shear on the lateral surface of the cylinder by convolution. Next, the stresses at the mid-section of the infinite cylinder are removed. This is done by finding a set of boundary conditions for the end which yields zero tractions on the lateral surface. Then a series of these boundary conditions is used to approximate the tractions which must be removed.With the solution thus obtained, two sample problems are shown: 1. an elastic cylinder in contact with a half-space; 2. a rigid punch in contact with an elastic cylinder.

    Notes: A presentation is made of a rectangular plate bending element, the use of which corresponds to the finite difference method. The element stiffness matrix is arrived at by approximation of the strain energy of the element by suitably selected finite difference expressions which contain not only values in respect of the deflection, but also values of its first derivatives. On the basis of the connection found between the two methods, some changes are suggested in the finite difference method, which involve a more realistic way of considering the detailed distribution of the loading.     Notes: When calculating complex interconnected systems (electrical, power, water supply, gas systems, etc.) by digital computer, a number of common problems arise, connected both with the mathematically correct formulation of the problem under investigation, and with the algorithms of the solution, the programming of which makes it possible to reduce the computing time, the store capacity and the volume of input data required. The present article is devoted to the solution of these problems. The procedure is illustrated by formulating and manipulating the equations relating to complex interconnected mine ventilation networks.

    Notes: Solution of plane elastic problems by piecewise linear approximation is outlined. This method is based upon Galerkin error distribution technique, which leads to simultaneous algebraic equations identical to those associated with the Finite Element Method. In addition, this method permits definition of the discretization error, which can be computed once the displacement components are known. Properties of the interpolation functions are discussed, and a sequence of internally compatible plane elastic elements is defined.

    Notes: A review is given of some mathematical programming methods suitable for optimization of structures needing matrix methods for analysis. An application is presented for elastic flat grillages made of straight orthogonal beams normally loaded. Empirical relationships are used to relate beam section properties so that each beam element has only one design variable. Optimization results are obtained by methods of stress-ratio, linear programming-cutting plane and usable-feasible gradient directions. A comparison of the efficiency of these methods is given for the grillage designs which are shown to have non-convex stress constraints and numerous relative optima. Instances are given of non-fully stressed global optima and fully stressed designs which are not local optima for cases with only stress constraints. Discussions include locating the global optima for grillage designs and extensions of the methods presented to other structural design problems.

    Notes: The paper presents a method for reducing the size of a vibration analysis by generating an inertia matrix referred to a limited set of ‘master’ vibrational freedoms. In designing a computer program to perform this mass condensation process, the emphasis has been on providing a two way interface between structural analysis and vibration analysis programs. The transformation from the full set of degrees of freedom to the master set makes extensive vibration calculations economically feasible giving solutions in terms of the amplitudes of the master freedoms. However, by reversing the transformation after completion of a vibration analysis, it is possible to restore the full set of freedoms, allowing automatic plotting of mode shapes in full detail, and re-entry to the structural analysis program for the purpose of computing dynamic stresses.A worked example is given. This is a realistic machine tool structure rather than the simple plates or beams which are usually used for illustration purposes. Natural frequencies and mode shapes, calculated with various degrees of condensation, are compared with those obtained by using all possible freedoms. A comparison is also made with an intuitive selection of ‘lumped masses’.

    Notes: The application of non-linear programming methods for the optimum design of statically indeterminate structures is discussed, with special emphasis on the design of elastic grillages loaded laterally and in plane. Some features of SUMT (sequential unconstrained minimization technique) are demonstrated by means of numerous examples of varying complexity. The Variable Metric method of search is discussed and compared to Powell's Direct Method. It is shown that non-convex sets of design variables are often encountered in structural problems of the grillage type. SUMT may still be used, but the choice of starting value and initial response factor decisively influences the chance of finding the global optimum.It is demonstrated that a fully stressed design may not necessarily correspond to the minimum weight design. Optimum design of grillages which are simultaneously subjected to lateral and in-plane loads may be performed efficiently by means of non-linear programming.

    Notes: A completely numerical method for steady state linear viscoelastic stress analysis is presented by means of the finite element approach. Numerical representations of the measured viscoelastic constitutive relations are used. This method is developed to obtain steady state solutions to mixed boundary value problems in which the character of the boundary conditions at a point changes with time. Such problems cannot be handled by direct application of the correspondence theorem. A numerical example of viscoelastic sheet rolling is presented along with an experimental verification of the solution by photo-viscoelastic observations.

    Notes: Durch Temperaturprogrammierung bei präparativen gas-chromatographischen Trennungen läßt sich die Substanzausbeute steigern. Temperaturunterschiede zwischen Säulenwand und Säulenmitte vermindern die Trennleistung besonders bei Säulen mit größeren Abmessungen. Es wurde die zeitliche Temperaturverteilung in temperaturprogrammierten Säulen theoretisch und experimentell untersucht. Eine einfache Beziehung gibt das Temperaturfeld in Abhängigkeit vom Rohrradius, von der Aufheizrate und der Temperaturleitzahl der stationären Phase mit guter Genauigkeit an.

    Notes: Äthylenimin wird aus Aminoäthylschwefelsäure mit besonders günstiger Ausbeute bei hohen Temperaturen (um 250°C) und kurzen Verweilzeiten (unter 10 s) hergestellt. Während die wäßrige Reaktionslösung in einer Laborapparatur in sehr kurzer Zeit durch die Rohrwand aufgeheizt werden kann, läßt sich die erforderliche Wärmemenge bei technischen Reaktoren mit größerem Rohrdurchmesser genügend rasch nur durch direkte Zumischung von hochgespanntem Dampf zuführen. Die in einer Technikumsapparatur ermittelten Versuchsergebnisse werden mitgeteilt.

    Notes: Zum Dispergieren von wäßrigen Suspensionen und Lacksuspensionen durch Kugelmahlung werden Modellgesetze angegeben, die es unter Beachtung der allgemeinen Ähnlichkeitsmechanik gestatten, den durch eine Modellmahlung auf einer Planetenkugelmühle erhaltenen zeitlichen Dispergierfortschritt auf eine Schwerkraftkugelmühle in Großausführung zu übertragen. Man kann damit die für ein Produkt spezifischen Betriebsdaten einer Kugelmahlanlage in verhältnismäßig kurzer Zeit optimal auslegen. Es werden Modellversuche gezeigt, die für den Abbau von Pigmentagglomeraten in einer Lacklösung die Richtigkeit der Modellbeziehungen bestätigen.

    Notes: Seit einiger Zeit ist die Simulation des Verhaltens von Apparaten und Maschinen bei der Untersuchung von Regelstrecken mit Hilfe von Analogie-Rechengeräten bekannt. Neuerdings wird diese Arbeitsmethode auch auf die Erforschung des Reaktionsablaufes in chemischen Reaktoren erweitert. Hierbei müssen jedoch infolge der komplexen Vorgänge und des komplizierten Zusammenspiels von Impuls-, Stoff- und Wärmetransport diverse vereinfachende Annahmen beim Aufstellen des mathematischen Modells getroffen werden. Das Prinzip dieser Methode und ihre Schwierigkeiten werden aufgezeigt.

    Notes: Einleitend wird eine allgemeine Übersicht über verschiedene elektrochemische Dimerisierungsreaktionen gegeben. Da die bei der anodischen Dimerisierung von Adipinsäure-monomethylester und bei der kathodischen Hydrodimerisierung von Acrylnitril entstehenden Verbindungen, Sebacinsäure-dimethylester und Adipinsäuredinitril, Grundbausteine von Polykondensationsprodukten sind, werden vielleicht auch ihre elektro-organischen Synthesen in Zukunft technisch interessant sein. Die Reaktionsbedingungen und Abhängigkeit der Dimeren-Ausbeute von Stromdichte, pH-Wert, Elektrolytzusammensetzung und Monomeren-Konzentration sowie die stationären Stromspannungskurven und Potential/Zeit-Kurven werden besprochen. Reaktionsmechanismen für beide Dimerisierungsreaktionen werden diskutiert.

    Notes: Die klassische Theorie der Elektroosmose von Helmholtz und v. Smoluchowski, die aus der Vorstellung einer elektrischen Doppelschicht an der inneren Phasengrenze der Porenwandungen abgeleitet ist, versagt bei der Anwendung auf Membranen. Die neue Theorie betrachtet vielmehr die feinporigen Kapillarsysteme der Membranen in erster Näherung als homogene Elektrolyte, in denen sich teils bewegliche (austauschbare), teils unbewegliche (an die Matrix der Membran gebundene) Ionen befinden. Man wird dadurch unabhängig von der Annahme einer bestimmten Porenstruktur der Membran und gewinnt Ansätze, die auch die elektrische Leitfähigkeit und das Dialysepotential mit den elektroosmotischen Erscheinungen in Zusammenhang bringen.

Nach einer allgemeinen Diskussion der Einflußgrößen werden die an zahlreichen Gemischen bei verschiedenen Rückflußverhältnissen und Drücken erhaltenen Meßergebnisse in einem Diagramm dargestellt. Ein in vielen Fällen gültiges Nomogramm gestattet es, schnell die maximale Schütthöhe einer Übergangseinheit aus dem Durchmesser von Hohlfüllkörpern und der Berieselungsstärke zu bestimmen.

Das Verhalten der Kolonne bei sprungförmiger Änderung des Rückflußverhältnisses wird untersucht. Als Testgemisch wird das System Benzol/Trichloräthylen benutzt. An vier verschiedenen Stellen der Kolonne wird gemessen, wie sich die Konzentration der flüssigen Phase mit der Zeit ändert. Zur automatischen Bestimmung der Konzentration wurde ein Analysengerät entwickelt, mit dem die Dielektrizitätskonstante des Gemisches ermittelt wird.

    Notes: Gasreaktionen in Katalysatorschüttungen werden oft dadurch auf konstanter Temperatur gehalten, daß man an verschiedenen Stellen der Schüttung temperiertes Gas zuführt. Um zu berechnen, wie schnell sich der dadurch entstehende Temperaturunterschied in der Schüttung ausgleicht, wird die Gleichung für eine zylindersymmetrische Strömung mäßiger Geschwindigkeit mit einer Wärmequelle innerhalb der Strömung benutzt. Die Gleichung ist für praktische Zwecke genügend genau, wie ein Vergleich mit früheren Messungen zeigt. Zur allgemeinen Anwendung der Gleichung sind allerdings noch ergänzende Versuche erforderlich, die den jeweiligen Einfluß von Füllkörperform und -abmessung klären sollen.

    Notes: In drei Füllkörpersäulen mit vier verschiedenen Kugelfüllkörpern aus Glas wurden Temperaturprofile gemessen. Zur Versuchsauswertung wurden für den Wärmetransport im Kern der Schüttung effektive Wärmeleitzahlen λe und für den Wärmetransport in unmittelbarer Rohrwandnähe Wärmeübergangszahlen a0 ermittelt. Mit Hilfe geeigneter Kennzahlen können die Ergebnisse der meistens bei Turbulenz vorgenommenen Versuche in Form von allgemeingültigen Potenzfunktionen dargestellt werden. Ferner wird die turbulente Vermischung innerhalb der Lücken der Schüttung mit Hilfe von Vermischungsversuchen erforscht, bei denen die Ausbreitung von Kohlendioxyd in einer luftdurchströmten Füllkörpersäule gemessen wird. Auf die Vergleichbarkeit und den theoretischen Zusammenhang der Ergebnisse der unterschiedlichen Untersuchungsmethoden wird eingegangen. Theoretische Überlegungen führen zu einer Erweiterung der Potenzfunktionen auf beliebige Strömungsmedien und Füllkörpermaterialien.

    Notes: Es wird untersucht, welcher Aufwand für eine Wasserwäsche zur Gasentschwefelung erforderlich ist und ob das Verfahren wirtschaftlich ist. Dabei wird von den Rauchgasen eines Heizöl-Kraftwerkes ausgegangen, deren Gehalt an Schwefeldioxyd von 5 g/m3 auf rd. 50 mg/m3 gesenkt werden muß. Das hier diskutierte Wasserwaschverfahren bringt zwar gegenüber früheren Vorschlägen erhebliche Einsparungen, ist jedoch recht kompliziert. Immerhin hat es den Vorteil, daß bei einer Verringerung des Schwefel-Gehaltes um rd. 99% nur sehr geringe Mengen zusätzlicher Abfallstoffe entstehen.

    Notes: Um für die Abgasentgiftung von Fahrzeugmotoren ein Gerät zur katalytischen Nachverbrennung zu entwickeln, wurden in Modellversuchen zunächst die wichtigsten EinflußGrößen der Verbrennungsreaktion untersucht (wie z. B. Druckverlust in der Katalysatorschüttung oder günstigste Vorwärmtemperatur). Danach wurde ein Nachverbrennungsgerät entworfen, das zwischen 550 und 900°C im mittleren Bereich des Motoren-Kennfeldes den Kohlenmonoxyd-Gehalt der Abgase auf weniger als 0,01 Vol.-% reduziert.

    Notes: Unter Glas versteht man ein anorganisches Schmelzprodukt, das beim Abkühlen nicht kristallisiert (kleine Keimbildungsgeschwindigkeit, kleine Kristallisationsgeschwindigkeit). Glaskeramik ist ebenfalls ein anorganisches, jedoch Keimbildungsmittel enthaltendes Schmelzprodukt, welches bei der Abkühlung zunächst glasig erstarrt und durch eine anschließende Wärmebehandlung weitgehend kristallisiert (hohe Keimbildung-geschwindigkeit im Transformationsbereich sowie hohe Kristallisationsgeschwindigkeit dicht oberhalb dieses Bereiches). Als Sinterglaskeramik bezeichnet man mechanisch feste kristalline Körper, die aus Mischungen von Glaspulver und bestimmten anorganischen Verbindungen unter Zusatz von Plastifizierungsmitteln durch einen Sinterprozeß oberhalb des Erweichungspunktes der Glaskomponente entstehen (hohe Keimbildungs-geschwindigkeit, kleine bis mittlere Kristallisationsgeschwindigkeit). -  Rohstoffe, technische Herstellung, physikalische Eigenschaften und Anwendungsmöglichkeiten dieser Körper werden besprochen.

    Notes: Die Steiggeschwindigkeit der Blasen in einem mit Gas fluidisierten Bett aus feinkörnigen Teilchen wird abgeleitet, indem die Dynamik der umgebenden Partikel und der wirkenden Kräfte analysiert wird. Aus einer theoretischen Betrachtung und einer Druckmessung ergibt sich die Kraft, die den Steigvorgang unterhält. Sie ist gleich der Gewichtskraft des durch den Hohlraum verdrängten Feststoffes. Die allgemeine Widerstandsformel ist auf den Bewegungsvorgang des die Blase umschließenden Feststoffes anwendbar. Der Widerstand ist definitionsgemäß ein reiner Form- oder Druckwiderstand mit einem konstanten cw-Wert.

    Notes: Bringt man zwischen zwei ineinandergeschachtelte Gefäße eine Schicht dichtgerüttelten dispersen Stoffes und belastet diese Anordnung, z. B. durch Druck im inneren Gefäß, so treten infolge innerer Reibung erhebliche Schubspannungen in der Schüttung auf. Dies führt zu einem starken Abbau der Normalspannungen, wie an Versuchen im Labormaßstab nachgewiesen wird. Gleichzeitig kann eine derartige Schüttung als thermische Isolierung dienen. Bei sehr hohen Drücken kommt die Unempfindlichkeit einer Schüttung gegen Dehnung besonders zur Geltung, so daß Drücke bis zur Druckfestigkeit des dispersen Stoffes ertragen werden können.

    Notes: Zum Registrieren von spektrochemischen Analysen sind Spektrographen  -  d. h. photographisch registrierende Apparate  -  besonders dann gut geeignet, wenn das Analysenprogramm häufiger gewechselt wird. Die quantitative Auswertung dauert beim photographischen Registrieren allerdings recht lang. Deshalb wurde eine Anordnung entwickelt, bei der die photometrischen Meßwerte auf einen Lochstreifen übertragen werden. Die Daten können dann mit einem elektronischen digitalen Rechenautomaten (IBM 7040) ausgewertet werden. Der Zeitaufwand beträgt dabei nur 1/200 der Zeit, die das übliche Verfahren mit dem Rechenbrett erfordert.

    Notes: Sollen in der Hochtemperatur-Pyrolyse flüssige Kohlenwasserstoffe gespalten werden, so darf die Drall-Komponente des Brennergases einen gewissen Wert nicht überschreiten. Das Brennergas würde sonst die größeren Öltröpfchen, die nicht vollständig verdampfen, an die Wand des Reaktors schleudern, wo sie eine Koksschicht bilden. Die Differentialgleichung für die Bewegung eines Tröpfchens in einem rotierenden Gasstrom wird aufgestellt und mit Hilfe eines Analogrechners gelöst. Daraus ergibt sich der Drall, der bei der Konstruktion von Brennkammern für flüssige Kohlenwasserstoffe zulässig ist.

    Notes: Ein Verfahren der Chemischen Werke Witten zur Herstellung von Terephthalsäure-dimethylester durch Luftoxidation von p-Xylol in flüssiger Phase hat in der Industrie eine beachtliche Bedeutung erlangt. Es wird die Entwicklung des Verfahrens beschrieben. Aus dem Reaktionsablauf wurden neue Erkenntnisse über den Oxidationsmechanismus gewonnen. Charakteristische Zwischenprodukte sind der p-Toluylsäure-methylester und der Terephthalsäure-monomethylester.

    Notes: Zur Berechnung von Verweilzeitspektren bei stationärem Transport wird das Diffusionsmodell als stochastischer Prozeß eingeführt. Der Zusammenhang zwischen Mittelwert und Streuung des Verweilzeitspektrums und den Transportgrößen des Diffusionsmodells wird in Strenge allgemein ermittelt. Die Untersuchung zeigt, daß die zeitliche Verteilungsdichte des aus dem Bilanzgebiet austretenden Spurstoffes der idealen Stoßmarkierung i.a. nicht mit der zeitlichen Verteilungsdichte der Konzentration an der Meßstelle übereinstimmt. Am Beispiel einer Modellkugelmühle werden die Rechnungen praktisch angewandt.

    Notes: Hohlrührer sind hohl ausgebildete und an einer Hohlwelle angebrachte Rührer, die gleichzeitig zum Rühren und zum Fördern von Gasen dienen. Mit einem Hohlrührer von niedriger spezifischer Wellenleistung wurde die Abhängigkeit des Soges und der Wellenleistung von den kinematischen, stofflichen und geometrischen Einflußgrößen untersucht. Es stellte sich heraus, daß neben Rührerdrehzahl und -durchmesser nur noch die Viscosität der Flüssigkeit und die Flüssigkeitshöhe über dem Rührer einen stärkeren Einfluß auf den Sog und die Wellenleistung ausüben. Die dimensionslosen Ausdrücke für Sog und Wellenleistung sind im wesentlichen nur eine Funktion der Froude-Zahl. Unter betrieblichen Bedingungen läßt sich an Stelle des dimensionslosen Ausdruckes für den Sog ein solcher für die durchgesetzte Gasmenge einführen, der ebenfalls eine Funktion der Froude-Zahl ist und eine schnelle Bestimmung des jeweiligen Gasdurchsatzes ermöglicht. Dabei ergeben sich optimale Werte für Rührerdrehzahl und -durchmesser, bei denen die zugehörige Wellenleistung ein Minimum erreicht.

    Notes: Produktionsanlagen der Chemie können durch Überholung des Produktes, des chemischen Verfahrens, der verfahrenstechnischen Prozeßführung oder durch unzureichende Kapazität veralten. Die einzelnen Apparate unterliegen dem technischen Verschleiß, während vollständige Produktionsanlagen der Gefahr einer wirtschaftlichen Überholung in Verbindung mit der Ertrags- und Gewinnentwicklung ausgesetzt sind. Die überholte Anlage muß mit klarer Einschätzung der wirtschaftlichen Folgen weiterbetrieben, vorübergehend oder endgültig stillgelegt werden. Eine Vorausschätzung der Überholungsrisiken und der wirtschaftlichen Lebensdauer bereits bei der Planung der Anlagen ist nur begrenzt möglich. In Teil II dieser Arbeit werden Kosten und Rentabilität von Einzelapparaten und vollständigen Anlagen in Abhängigkeit von Nutzungsdauer und Stillegungszeit untersucht. Dabei werden vor allem die grundlegenden Zusammenhänge geklärt, während konkrete Zahlenwerte für jeden Betrieb unterschiedlich sind und daher nicht mitgeteilt werden.

    Notes: Die Farbe anorganischer Pigmente kann variiert werden durch Veränderung der Absorptionskonstanten (Einbau farbgebender Kationen) oder der Streu-Konstanten; diese wiederum wird von Brechugsindex, Teilchengröße, -form- und -verteilung sowie von der Pigmentvolumenkonzentration beeinflußt. Farbton und spektrale Farbdichte roter α-Fe2O3-Pigmente hängen linear von der Teilchengröße und der Verteilungsbreite ab. Bei gleicher Teilchengröße und farbtongleicher Wellenlänge nimmt die spektrale Farbdichte bei Abnahme der Standardabweichung In σg sehr stark zu.

    Notes: Zu den vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der Zerkleinerung gehört auch das Desagglomerieren auf Walzenstühlen und in Knetmaschinen. Dabei werden in hochviscosen Medien suspendierte Feststoffteilchen durch Strömungskräfte beansprucht und zerkleinert, sofern die Beanspruchung die Festigkeit der Teilchen überschreitet. Diese Beanspruchung von Agglomeraten wurde in einer Versuchsapparatur nachgeahmt. Dabei konnten die Ergebnisse einer früheren Arbeit bestätigt werden, in der das Verhalten und die Beanspruchung einer Kugel in einer langsamen, zähen Scherströmung rechnerisch untersucht worden war.

    Notes: Der Wirkungsgrad der Stromaufnahme nach Laden bei verschiedenen Stromdichten und Temperaturen wurde an positiven und negativen Platten von Blei-Akkumulatoren bestimmt, indem die entnehmbare Strommenge gemessen wurde. Es zeigte sich, daß der Wirkungsgrad der Ladereaktion mit sinkender Temperatur und steigender Stromdichte abnimmt, da ein immer größerer Teil des Ladestromes zur Sauerstoff- bzw. Wasserstoff-Entwicklung verwendet wird. Dabei ist die negative Elektrode empfindlicher als die positive, sowohl gegen Temperaturerniedrigung als auch gegen Stromerhöhung. Der Wirkungsgrad der Ladereaktion sinkt nicht infolge einer Verschiebung der Gleichgewichtspotentiale ab, sondern auf Grund kinetischer Hemmungen.
