    Beschreibung: In this work, we show the results of 12 years of continuous and survey-mode GPS measurements carried out along the western part of the Calabro-Peloritano Arc, from 1996 until the more recent acquisitions in 2008. The results highlight that a NW-SE-oriented ~0.15 microstrain/yr extension across the Messina Strait and the Aeolian-Tindari-Letojanni fault system is active. Moreover, a N-S compressive strain-rate (~0.65 microstrain/yr) is acting across Vulcano and Lipari Islands coupled with an extensional strain-rate of ~0.15 microstrain/yr in the E-W direction. Finally, taking into account the observed horizontal velocity field, an analytical inversion was performed to obtain a reliable model of deformation of the investigated area. The main results are consistent both with focal mechanism solutions and the current structural setting of the investigated area.

    Beschreibung: The tectonic deformation of the Lipari-Vulcano complex, one of the most important active volcanic areas of Mediterranean region, is studied here through the analysis of ten years (1996-2006) of GPS data from both 3 permanent and 13 non-permanent stations. This area can be considered crucial for the understanding of the Eurasia-Africa plates interaction in the Mediterranean area, and, in general, this work emphasize a methodological approach, already applied in other areas worldwide (e.g. Shen et al., 1996, El-Fiki and Kato, 1999) where geodetic data and strain parameters maps of critical areas can help to improve our understanding of their geodynamical aspects. In this framework, this study is aimed at providing a kinematic deformation model on the basis of the dense geodetically estimated velocities of the Lipari-Vulcano complex. In particular, the observed deformation pattern can be described by a mix between 1) the main N-S regional compression and 2) a NNE-SSW compression with a small right-lateral strike slip component acting along a tectonic structure N°40W trending located between the two islands. This pattern was inspected through a simplified synthetic model.

    Beschreibung: We analysed elevation changes induced by the 1997–1998 Umbria-Marche, central Apennines (Italy) earthquakes. We employed data from a first-order geodetic levelling line measured in 1951, 1992 and 1998. The line bears a record of pre-seismic and coseismic strains associated with the causative fault of the 1997 September 26, 09:40 mainshock (Mw = 6.0). A first level analysis performed under the assumption of slip homogeneity of coseismic slip shows misfits that cannot be reduced simply by altering the fault size and geometry. A more detailed analysis based on a distribution of coseismic slip obtained from broad-band seismograms provides a better fit and is in agreement with 1951–1992 elevation changes interpreted as precursory slip by previous investigators. The levelling data sets new constraints on the location, extent, dip and depth of the fault, in full agreement with seismological evidence and images from SAR interferometry. The data show no evidence for slip in the uppermost 3 km of the crust, suggesting that a major and widely recognized normal fault that exists in the area is no longer active and showing a tendency of present tectonic strains to revert the current topographic setting.

    Beschreibung: Seismicity in Eastern Sicily as recorded by the Submarine Network-1 seafloor observatory (SN- 1) in the period from 2002 October to 2003 May is examined with the aim of identifying the as yet poorly known seismogenic zones placed in the Ionian basin, where some of the strongest earthquakes have occurred. A comparison between the seismic recordings of land networks and the seafloor station has allowed us to focus on low-magnitude seismicity only recorded by SN-1.We have analysed 239 high-quality events from among a total of 485 seismic signals not included in the land-based network bulletins. The waveform features and the possible source zones for those events are investigated by means of polarization and particle motion techniques. Most of the 239 events (213) are characterized by high values of rectilinearity typical of P- and S-arrival particle motions, while the remaining 26 events have different polarization features, with an emergent first phase and prevalently planar polarization.We have interpreted the latter signals as being associated to submarine landslides. From particle motion analysis, we have determined the azimuthal distribution of the events and the incidence angles of P waves in respect to the Observatory with the aim of determining their distribution in relation to the active but scarcely known structural setting of the off-shore area. Moreover, the integrated locations of some earthquakes occurring in the study area and recorded by SN-1 and land stations was performed to determine the apparent P-wave velocity necessary to calculate source-station distances. As an additional result of the integration, we have obtained more accurate locations of earthquakes occurring in the coastal and off-shore areas of Eastern Sicily, associated with reduced horizontal and vertical errors and significantly lower values of azimuthal gaps. Lastly, a location distribution of the 213 analysed events was obtained by setting two conditions: (1) a maximum epicentral distance to a fixed depth coinciding with the depth of the seafloor station and (2) a minimum epicentral distance associated to the maximum depth of events. Accordingly, two patterns of seismicity were determined for the maximum and the minimum expected spread of the hypocentres. The main features of both patterns are a diffuse seismicity in the Western Ionian basin with a major epicentre density SE of SN-1 and a depth of most of the events within 60 km. Local magnitude determination was also performed, taking into account an attenuation law proposed for Southeastern Sicily. Despite the uncertainties in the location distribution using single-station recordings, the results show diffuse seismicity all around SN-1 and, in particular, in the off-shore area.

    Beschreibung: We analyzed the instrumental seismicity of Southern Italy in the area including the Lucanian Apennines and Bradano foredeep, making use of the most recent seismological data base available so far. P- and S-wave arrival times, recorded by the Italian National Seismic Network (RSNC) operated by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), were re-picked along with those of the SAPTEX temporary array deployed in the region in the period 2001–2004. For some events located in the upper Val d'Agri, we also used data from the Eni-Agip oil company seismic network. We examined the seismicity occurred during the period between 2001 and 2006, considering 514 events with magnitudes M≥2.0. We computed the VP/VS ratio obtaining a value of 1.83 and we carried out an analysis for the one-dimensional (1D) velocity model that approximates the seismic structure of the study area. Earthquakes were relocated and, for well- recorded events, we also computed 108 fault plane solutions. Finally, using 58 solutions, the most constrained, we computed regional stress field in the study area. Earthquake distribution shows three main seismic regions: the westernmost (Lucanian Apennines) characterized by high background seismicity, mostly with shallow hypocenters, the easternmost below the Bradano foredeep and the Murge with deeper and more scattered seismicity, and finally the more isolated and sparse seismicity localized in the Sila Range and in the offshore area along the northeastern Calabrian coast. Focal mechanisms computed in this work are in large part normal and strike-slip solutions and their tensional axes (T-axes) have a generalized NE–SW orientation. The denser station coverage allowed us to improve hypocenters determination compared to those obtained by using only RSNC data, for a better characterization of the crustal and subcrustal seismicity in the study area.

    Beschreibung: In this work, we analyse continuous measurements of microseisms to assess the reliability of the fundamental resonance frequency estimated by means of the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratio within the 0.1–1 Hz frequency range, using short-period sensors (natural period of 1 s). We apply the H/V technique to recordings of stations installed in two alluvial basins with different sedimentary cover thicknesses—the Lower Rhine Embayment (Germany) and the Gubbio Plain (Central Italy). The spectral ratios are estimated over the time–frequency domain, and we discuss the reliability of the results considering both the variability of the microseism activity and the amplitude of the instrumental noise. We show that microseisms measured by short period sensors allow the retrieval of fundamental resonance frequencies greater than about 0.1–0.2 Hz, with this lower frequency bound depending on the relative amplitude of themicroseism signal and the self-noise of the instruments. In particular,we show an examplewhere the considered short-period sensor is connected to instruments characterized by an instrumental noise level which allows detecting only fundamental frequencies greater than about 0.4 Hz. Since the frequency at which the peak of the H/V spectral ratio is biased depends upon the seismic signal-to-instrument noise ratio, the power spectral amplitude of instrumental self-noise should be always considered when interpreting the frequency of the peak as the fundamental resonance frequency of the investigated site
