Description: Modeling has emerged as a critical tool to investigate a wide range of biogeochemical and ecological challenges in the sea, such as the impact of climate change on the air–sea balance of carbon dioxide. Models need to be formulated and adapted to address a particular problem, and are therefore seldom easily transferable. The core set of processes to be captured by ocean biogeochemical/ecological models is the ‘great biogeochemical loop’, which starts with the photosynthetic fixation of inorganic elements into organic matter by phytoplankton, and then follows the transport of these elements into the ocean’s interior in organic form and then back to the surface in their inorganic forms. As the latter occurs by mixing and transport, ecological/biogeochemical models in the ocean invariably need to be coupled to some form of physical model. The complexity of either the physical or the biogeochemical/ecological models can vary greatly, leading to a large diversity of coupled physical ecological/biogeochemical models, ranging from simple box models to complex three-dimensional models that incorporate many bioreactive elements and functional groups. Emerging modeling directions are the increased interaction of observations and models through inverse methods and the continuing expansion of systems that these models are coupled to, such as the sediments, atmosphere, and the land.

Description: This chapter discusses the phosphorus cycle. Phosphorus is one of the most important elements on Earth. It participates in or controls many of the biogeochemical processes occurring in the biosphere. Phosphate also plays a central role in the transmission and control of chemical energy within the cells, primarily, via the hydrolysis of the terminal phosphate ester bond of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecule. The cycling of P is closely linked with biological processes. The chemical forms in which P is present in the environment is discussed. The processes that control its distribution in terrestrial, aquatic, and oceanic systems are described in the chapter. The chapter defines the major P reservoirs on the Earth's surface and the rate at which P is exchanged among these reservoirs. The chapter discusses the sub-global phosphorus cycles that includes freshwater terrestrial ecosystems, and the oceanic system and describes the global phosphorus cycle.

Description: Mathematical models used to represent plankton dynamics often display limit-cycle behavior in a range of realistic parameter values. However, experimental data do not show evidence of plankton oscillations besides externally driven seasonal blooms, casting doubts on the validity of the models themselves. In this work we show that spatial-temporal variability, coupled with advection by mesoscale turbulence, can disguise limit-cycle behavior to the point that it cannot be detected in fixed-point measurements of plankton abundance. The results presented here have more general implications as they indicate that the behavior of ecosystem models in the presence of advection can be very different from that occurring for homogeneous conditions. Care should thus be exercised in drawing general conclusions from the analysis of homogeneous ecosystem models.

Description: This article describes the geographical and bathymetric setting of the Arctic Ocean, its role in the larger Arctic Mediterranean Sea, and its connections to the World Ocean. The distribution and circulation of the different water masses are reviewed and mechanical and thermodynamic mixing processes are discussed. The climatic forcing and the recently observed variability of water mass characteristics are examined and the exchanges between the Arctic Ocean and the Nordic Seas and with the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are described. Finally the possible effects of changes in the global climate for the state of the Arctic Ocean and the significance of the Arctic Ocean in the climate system are discussed.
